The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

Description

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. When pressed, we describe it as a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. His son Griffin, 7, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he's talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works.

It's the finale of our third season! And the trouble only begins when Finn and Paige figure out the Puzzlemaster's final riddle. And then it turns out that trouble is only the beginning trouble that is followed by some much more serious tertiary trouble! So much trouble!

As always, I'm feeling a little emotional at the end of another season, and I want to say thanks to you parents who download the show, play it for your kids, ask them questions, read the books mentioned, encourage their interest in art, sound, literature, everything. Hearing from you and your hilarious, creative and imaginative kids is the best part of my week, every week. Thanks for everything.

BeeBop Tales: The Opposite of Survival
18:06

It's the BeeBop Tales Season 2 Finale! Can you believe it? Why, it seems like only yesterday, BeeBop was eating all of my valuable and sentimentally meaningful art, but it's turned out that's nothing compared to what he's lived through. In today's episode, we see him face down Dr. Perkolator, who, we learned last episode, seemed to have betrayed him. And BeeBop manages to answer a listener question about squid armies at the same time. All in a day's work.

This is it for us until September. Thanks so much to everyone who has listened, written in, phoned in, sent us art, voice memos, etc. Griffin and I (Jonathan)—as well as BeeBop—are so grateful. BeeBop will be back with a couple bonus episodes, but we'll see you soon!

We always love art and jokes sent to earth@finncaspian.com. And don't forget about Griffin's Sound Club! Send yours! You can also, of course, call our voice mail: 773-683-3166. If you have a second, and can rate or review the show in iTunes, we would be so grateful! It really helps get the word out.

Play Robot Road Trip!
06:47

In honor of the summer family vacation, members of Kids Listen—the nonprofit org full of the best kids' podcasters in all the land—are publishing episodes related to road trips! As big fans of the games you play in the car on those long rides, we thought we'd make one up for our listeners. All you have to do is record your kids (or your whole family!) saying the words or sounds on the list below, email us the file, and we'll edit it into the pre-recorded story and send it back to you. Just use the voice app on your phone, and record it as one file and email to earth@finncaspian.com. I’m going to record the story, and I’ll edit your responses in, and send you the mp3. I’ll also send you a PDF of the story, so if you’re going on a road trip, you can take it with you.

Here's what I need from you:

  1. A noun
  2. An adjective
  3. A name
  4. A verb
  5. A pleasant sound
  6. An ominous sound
  7. The sound of a robot turning on
  8. The sound of a confused robot
  9. The sound of an alien practicing karate kicks
  10. The sound of a robot asking an alien to stop practicing karate kicks
  11. A fruit
  12. And the sound of a robot eating a fruit

I know it probably sounds complicated. But if you’d like to play along, it’s actually fairly simple. Just let the voice memo app on your phone run, or turn on the recorder app on your computer, and then email me the file. I’ll take care of the rest.

I’ll do my best to turn them around as they come in. But I’m only going to be able to offer this until July 18th. After that, you can send me the files, and I’ll do my best, but I'm only guaranteeing up until the 18th. We'll have the story up after the 18th at finncaspian.com/game.

Thanks for playing along! I can't wait to hear what everyone comes up with!

S2E6: Nobody Puts Paigey in the Corner
25:51

In this week's episode, the Explorers Troop 301 take a backseat as Paige takes centerstage. We find out what's been happening to Paige as she's been held prisoner by King Huxley, and it will likely surprise no one that she's taking matters into her own hands. But when she comes across another inhabitant of the castle, will it be a friend or foe?

This is by far the most difficult puzzle we've had in the show's run. The solution is an anagram of "SEEK THICKET RIM." The key is really in the -ICK sound. That might help crack it. If your child is too young to read, or just beginning, you can also talk about anagrams in terms of sounds. That may not help solve this puzzle, but it may help with understanding anagrams and how words fit together.

One more clue, in white text. Highlight if you want to see it: It's three words, the second word is "three."

And after playing around with the letters for a while, you can always use an internet anagram solver (it's not cheating if you've given it an honest try).

Halloween Special Bonus Episode
10:12

Today's episode takes a break from the regular Finn Caspian storyline to tell a short, spooky story for Halloween. Every year the Marlowe throws the best Halloween party in the universe. But this year, an uninvited guest causes some trouble for the Explorers (especially Voltronix Zu).

For parents: There's nothing about this story that's particularly scary compared to other Finn stories, but the ghost's voice is maybe a little creepy. So it might be worth giving it a listen or testing it out first.

And if you want to pick up on the kid-lit reference in today's story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving is available for free here.

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a Typedrawer Media production, and is a serialized story podcasts for kids ages 5-10, though this one isn't so serialized.

Episode 10: In the Belly of the Beast
23:11

In today's episode, the kids in Explorers' Troop 301 once again find themselves in trouble on the surface of an alien planet, as the giant Saphrite sends out an army to stop the invaders. And once again, the explorers have to head beneath the surface of a planet before they can blast off. But! What does it mean when you head below the surface of a living planet? It means some…interesting…terrain.

SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ THIS BEFORE LISTENING TO THE EPISODE: Today's episode ends with a riddle. Here is the text of it. If listeners know the answer, email earth@finncaspian.com, and we'll relay it to the explorers. We'll also send out a prize to everyone who submits a correct (or reasonable) answer:

Around you I spin but disappear
