Forget the Oscars, we're talking Anime Awards
0:23:45

While Joey and Aki were disappointed with the lack of Anime nominations at the Oscars, they want to talk all things Anime Awards. Anime's answer to the Oscars were on recently; the Crunchyroll Anime Awards! Joey and Aki have some thoughts about the winners and what films they think deserved to win. The duo also think the awards system needs a change; maybe they need to break it into 2 sections: fan voted awards and academy voted awards. There's a few problems with the Crunchyroll Awards (they'll spell it out for you). But, it's still very cool of them to make an awards show dedicated to Anime.

Ep 39. Thoughts on 'Alita: Battle Angel' live-action; we're optimistic
0:25:02

This week Joey and Aki talk about the Alita: Battle Angel live-action adaptation. The Trailer dropped two days ago and there's a lot of thoughts from people online. Joey thinks seeing Robert Rodriguez's name as Director is a good step. They've chosen a really niche manga too, probably in the hope that they won't get too many people offside because it's not super popular so there's not a huge fan-base to tick off. Everyone's talking about Alita's eyes; most peeps don't like them. Joey and Aki think people are being too quick to judge. The duo think there's hope; its got a really good Director/Producer combo, plus most people probably don't even know the original Manga. From what he's seen so far, and because of the people making it, Joey thinks it's going to be a decent film - as long as they don't get the story wrong. Thoughts?

Thoughts on 'Alita: Battle Angel' live-action; we're optimistic
0:25:02

This week Joey and Aki talk about the Alita: Battle Angel live-action adaptation. The Trailer dropped two days ago and there's a lot of thoughts from people online. It's an old Manga, and is being produced by James Cameron (Avatar) and directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City). Joey and Aki think people are being too quick to judge from the Trailer, because it's only a tiny snippet of what's to come. The duo think there's hope; its got a really good Director/Producer combo, plus most people probably don't even know the original Manga. From what he's seen so far, and because of the people making it, Joey thinks it's going to be a decent film - as long as they don't get the story wrong. Thoughts?

EXTRA: What Shounen Anime we'd recommend to a newbie
0:03:13

Joey asks Aki what Shounen Anime she'd recommend to someone who hasn't ever seen one before. Aki says definitely One Piece (even though she hasn't seen it). No one really has anything bad to say about it. It is a pioneer of Shounen, it's still going and it has a ridiculously dedicated fanbase. The only downfall is that it's very lengthy, so if she had to recommend something shorter Aki would say Boku no Hero. What would yours be?

Thoughts on Black Clover Anime adaptation (hint: not impressed)
0:34:46

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest give their thoughts on the Anime adaptation of Shounen Manga Black Clover. Neither of them like it. They think the voice actor is annoying, the voice is like fingers scratching on a chalkboard. It's not just the voice acting that's bad; everything is predictable. Some people like it, and the duo think people who haven't seen a Shounen before might like it. But if you've seen other Shounen Anime then it's boring because you've seen it all before;  that's where the backlash is coming from. They don't know what went wrong though because the studio who made the Black Clover Anime has made a lot of great Shounen Anime adaptations. What do you think?

0:43:44

his week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest talk Anime cliches. There's a ridiculous amount of cliches in anime, and Joey and Aki want to try some to see what would actually happen in real life. There's the toast in mouth and Aki wants to test out nose-bleeds. Joey wants to know, if you fell on a girl how would you actually land because in Anime it's like an impressive yoga move. Also how slow can you fall; Anime slow-mo is epic. There's also the running, yelling, high-pitched voices, how fast you need to run to have your skirt fly like it does in Anime, friendship power (to beat the bad guys) and so the list goes on. What do you want to test IRL?

EXTRA: Everything that's bad about 'Magical Girl Apocalypse'
0:05:20

Joey and Aki really really don't like Magical Girl Apocalypse. While talking about the best horror mangas, the duo go on a rant about Magical Girl Apocalypse and why it's so bad. Joey thinks the art is good but that's about it. Aki doesn't even like the art, but she didn't want to 'judge a book by its cover' so she read it, and didn't like it. They don't think the manga knew what it wanted to do, or be. Joey thought it was going to get better as he kept reading...it didn't. What do you think about it?

0:40:11

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about Netflix spending $8 billion on Anime. The duo aren't overly excited about it. They're worried that the streaming platform won't do it well, or do it justice. They can see a lot of memes coming out of how bad the anime will be. Joey's scared about what Netflix is going to bring out next year, Aki is worried AND scared. What would you do with $8 billion to spend on a streaming service? Joey's got an idea...

Idol culture in Japan; the stigma and effects
0:38:39

This week Joey and Aki talk about Japan's Idol culture. Aki watched a documentary on Japan's Idol culture and now she is (slightly) obsessed. The documentary looked at the stigma surrounding idols in Japan and the effects around that. It looks in to how Japan's population is decreasing and how the Idol culture may be feeding into a culture that distracts men (and some women) from dating. The duo also talks about what defines an 'Idol' - are Perfume and Baby Metal idols? Joey isn't sure...

Joey and Aki have a lot of opinions on the list and give you their top 5. We want you to join in and let us know yours!

0:44:50

This week Joey and Aki are in the SBS PopAsia studio and they're talking about Manga and Anime creators who have passed away with incomplete work. The Manga artist for 'Wolf Children,' sadly, recently passed away. The duo talk about a list of creators who passed away with unfinished work like Satoshi Kon, the lead singer of Boom Boom Satellites, Osamu Tezuka and Usui Yoshihito. They talk a lot about Satoshi Kon and 'Dreaming Machine'. Do you think they should create an Anime from his Manga?

Death threats to the Death Note Director; it's disgusting
0:38:44

This week Joey and Aki talk about cyber bullying and why online trolling is 'disgusting'. They feel very strongly about this. The duo first talk about how bad the new Netflix Anime, Neo Yokio, is and then talk about how Death Note was also bad, which leads to the topic of cyber-bullying and trolling. Joey and Aki explain that after Netflix released the Death Note movie, its Director got such bad backlash online, including death threats, that he had to go off Twitter. Aki is exceptionally infuriated by this behaviour; she says this is what she hates about fandoms, the extremists who think content is more important than treating a person like a human being. She thinks death threats are much lower than any bad content he could've created. Joey is angry about it too, he says you can complain or criticise a person's work but you don't criticise that person, for being a person. Unfortunately their are people who think witch-hunting a Director online is necessary and Joey and Aki think it's disgusting. They're saying Neo Yokio is a bad Anime, but aren't saying any of the creators or voice actors involved are bad people. It's never ok, so just don't do it.

How do you get your parents in to Anime
0:31:25

This week Aki’s on her lonesome because Joey (and Aki) are getting ready to come to AUSTRALIA! Aki’s been getting her mum into Anime recently, she started by showing her Wolf Children, which her mum really liked because she could relate to it. Then she showed her Grave of the Fireflies, which her mum said she’d only recommend to someone interested in history and the impact of war. Aki might be ready to introduce her mum to some Ghibli movies now but wouldn’t show her anything too ‘full-blown’. A fan asks how they can get their parents into anime and Aki says, to start by showing them a movie, if they like it great, if not just accept it and hope they can support your love for it. Thoughts?

0:40:12

This week Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about how romance is portrayed in Anime; about when it's done well and when it fails, and their thoughts on romance in Death Note. Death Note and the future of Live Action, or Anime in theatres
0:34:32

This week Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about Netflix's Death Note Live-Action adaptation. They're yet to see it (because they're in Hawaii at the moment) but it's been interesting to see the comments and reviews online. A lot of people don't like it. There's been a lot of people saying that it's a good standalone film, but nothing like the original. Joey thinks that would make it a bad film because it claims to be an adaptation, which means it needs to have similarities to the original. Wanting to expand to a broader audience is good, but you can't have the only similarity being the title. The duo are really interested in what they'll think when they see it.

It's very competitive, you often assume people don't like you, but when you meet them in person that's usually not the case. YouTubers don't reveal their whole selves when they're on camera; you only see the parts they want to show you. Sometimes YouTubers will be quite different in person, to what you see on camera. They still want a personal life. Would you want to be successful online?

Are Winnie The Pooh and the Moomin anime connected?
0:31:02

This week AkiDearest has a conspiracy theory (that no one's allowed to steal)...She watched Moomin for the first time and says it reminds her of Winnie The Pooh. She's decided she has her own conspiracy theory that the two are connected... She liked the anime, and wishes she'd grown up with it as a kid. Joey The Anime Man really likes it too. The original series aired in 1969 - almost 50 years ago. Joey explains why he thinks it's still so popular today for kids and adults alike.

HIGHLIGHT: What does a 'villain' mean in Anime
0:08:22

This week Joey and Aki dive deep into what makes an anime villain. They focus on Death Note, and about whether L or Light is the villain. The duo think it's really interesting in Death Note, that there's no definitive 'villain.' Characters do evil things, but that's part of a bigger story that explores what happens when a good guy gets given immense power (like Light getting a Death Note).

Visual novels recommended by Joey & AkiDearest
0:40:11

Tuning in from Europe this week, Joey and Aki decide to tackle a few #SBSAnime questions that have been piling up over the past few weeks.

Many interesting topics were covered, such as what constitutes as an anime "villain" (especially in a series like Death Note), and the shutting down of a number of talented anime studios (including some behind beloved series like Samurai Champloo and Reborn!) due to various reasons like money and business re-structuring.

And finally, Joey and Aki dish on which visual novels that fans should definitely check out. Their recommendations? Kara no Shōjo and anything by Key Studios (Clannad, Air, and Angel Beats)!

Ep 20. Things in anime that Joey & AkiDearest DON'T like
0:47:12

Anime is amazing - but it has it's downsides! This week, Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest dives into the things in anime that they DON'T like.

For all the many positives that anime has (like great characters, gorgeous animation, and fantastic stories), there are a number things that grinds Joey and Aki's gears, such as anime made to appeal to certain audiences and nothing more, live-action adaptations (looking at you Dragonball Evolution and the upcoming One Piece movie), terrible plot-twists, the glorification of yandere characters (*shudders*), and the cliched "running" opening sequences (which continues to baffle Joey).

Ep 19. What happens to academic anime chat after 15 hours of travel; Hogwarts gets a mention
0:29:06

This week Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest are recording after 15 hours of travel. They're delirious, which is probably an understatement. The duo have been to a small anime convention in Finland, which turned out to be their favourite ever. There were about 3,000 attendees and half of them went to Joey and Aki's panel, which was also their favourite panel ever. The two explain why Finland's anime con is the best, and talk about anime sereis that are massive in Finland but not elsewhere. Then the chat takes a turn, Aki starts talking about Hogwarts as an anime because she's so tired. It's all laughter and hilarious dribble from here. Joey sums it up best: this one's a nighttime episode (and good for a laugh)!

Extra: What has the rapid rise in popularity done for anime; good or bad
0:09:43

Joey The Anime Man, AkiDearest and Gaijin Goomba discuss how they feel about anime's rapid rise in popularity. Aki thinks there was more creative freedom in the past; more gore and weirdness. Nowadays there's more censorship and a lack of demand for the gory, weird content. People love the cute girl, bright animation and simple slice-of-life storyline in 12 episodes because of patience (or lack of). In saying that, some gems have come out recently.

Not everyone appreciates the anime with deep messages, which leads to a discussion on whether all anime has to have deeper meaning.

Anime's not dying, but there are parts of it that have faded away. People debate that the quality has declined, but the trio think it's just changed. What the audience sees as a good story has changed - the demand is different. What do you think?

A special guest joins to talk about their favourite (and least fave) Ghibli and Miyazaki films
0:43:03

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest are joined by special guest, Gaijin Goombah; another famous anime YouTuber. They discuss their favourite (and least favourite) Ghibli and Miyazaki films. From Spirited Away, to Nausicaä, When Marnie Was There, Castle in the Sky and so many more, the trio want to know if you agree, disagree or have some others to add?

Joey The Anime Man's funny fangirl experience at a convention
0:09:15

Joey The Anime Man has a lot of fans online, and when he sees them in real life they can get a bit excited. Joey shares two funny, and slightly awkward, experiences he's had with fangirls at conventions. One happened while he was sitting next to AkiDearest, who was (secretly) his girlfriend at the time . What would you do if someone 'proposed' to you while sitting next to your partner - who they don't know is your partner? Joey's response was hilarious...

ALL the stories from the Anime Expo in LA
0:42:11

This week Joey The Anime Man and AkiDeareast talk all things Anime Expo. The duo are in LA, having an awesome time at the AX convention. They spill on who they've met, parties they've been to, and what it's like to go to the convention (as a guest, and as a 'normal person'). What's good about conventions, what's bad and what's the most popular cosplay costumes.

New, upcoming anime; one written by Stan Lee
0:37:15

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest are joined by special guest Soul (anime YouTuber: soulanimation), talking about upcoming anime; the good and the bad. There's an anime coming up this season called 'The Reflection' and it's been written by Stan Lee, and done by Studio Dean so the trio are super excited. For someone from the comic book industry to work on an anime, is huge. Seeing Stan Lee talk about anime is insane. If you're in to superhero comics, or just a fan of Stan Lee then you've got to check out this upcoming anime. Are you excited for it?

When did anime first cross over to the West (and WIN Oz Comic Con tickets)
0:37:26

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about when anime first crossed over, into Western markets, and whether that relates to anime being less violent now. Many people say when Studio Ghibli's 'Spirited Away' won an Academy Award, anime filtered into the mainstream but Aki and Joey don't necessarily agree. The duo think it was during anime's golden age, when Naruto and One piece came in - they're all over the West now. They're worldwide famous. Originally anime was really gory, and Aki thinks censorship in the West wouldn't have wanted blood in cartoons. The cartoons for adults was a new concept. When do you think it crossed over? PLUS, you can WIN a double weekend pass to Melbourne Oz Comic Con...

Japanese culture; there's more to it than just anime
0:28:03

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about Japanese culture, and how there's more to it than just anime. There's a lot of differences in cultures between Japan and America. In Japan, there are some towns that have a lot of anime, and one city is known for its anime, but the culture across the country is much more diverse than just that. Want to know the big cultural differences? Hit play!

Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest get in-depth about cosplay
0:40:43

This week Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest delve deep into cosplay, even though Joey is pretty new to it. Joey talks about his first (and only) experience cosplaying, as Gintoki. What he finds hardest about cosplay is being hot and sweaty in a costume and wig. There are toxic people who take cosplaying too seriously and nitpick other costumes, both online and at conventions. The duo let us in on their predictions for the top three cosplay characters at upcoming anime expos. Who should Joey and Aki dress up as for the anime expo next month?

How to deal with the haters on YouTube
0:37:37

Joey the Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about how they got started on YouTube, and how they deal with the negatives that come with a job they (mostly) love. Aki says some people's personalities change when they become successful YouTubers. She also says it makes her more self conscious, in her appearance and in what she says. YouTubers have to be careful with what they say, they have to hold their tongue more because the words sticks with them. There's a fine line in saying something to please your audience, and saying what you believe without losing your subscribers. They love their job and what they do but it's always hard to deal with the haters. The best and easiest way to deal with haters is to ignore them. It's still hard, but as soon as you give them attention, they've won. Do you agree?

YouTuber Gigguk talks anime nostalgia with Joey and Aki
0:40:38

This week Joey and Aki are joined by a special guest; fellow YouTuber, Gigguk. The trio talk about anime nostalgia. Here's some thought starters: what was the first anime you ever watched and what was the anime that blew you world wide open? Joey, Aki and Gigguk answer these plus how they started doing their online channels, how anime and geek culture has become so accepted, if they could wipe a memory of watching an anime so they could experience seeing it for the first time again, what would they watch, and the anime that brought the kid out in them. What would yours be?

Disagreeing on anime; good or just annoying
0:37:28

This week Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk about disagreeing - quite often - about what they think of certain anime. The couple have been asked if it's annoying how often they disagree on things, but the duo think it's the complete opposite. They prefer disagreeing on things because it makes for more interesting discussions. They don't fight because of their differing opinions, they just have interesting conversations. The duo like it when others disagree with their opinions too, like their audience. They respect different  opinions about anime. Joey says some comments have changed his view on certain anime, which makes things so much more interesting. What's your opinion on the topics they've covered this week? Let them know on Twitter with the #SBSanime hashtag

The first anime to make you cry; Aki's was a bit 'weird'
0:41:54

Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk about the first anime that made them cry. Aki doesn't cry much. Joey's was "Clannad"; he cried a lot. He used half a box of tissues. He was sitting at his desk with a closed mouth and tears streaming down his face. No words. No sniffling, just tears. Aki's first anime to make her cry was 'weird.' She cried in "March Comes the Lion." She cried because she felt so much for the character, even talking about it now is heavy for her. She also cried in "Monster Rancher." What was yours?

A guide to Japanese culture; it's not just about Anime
0:30:29

Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest give their tips on getting the most out of Japanese culture when you visit Japan. Be open to the food, Japanese food is another world entirely. There's so much to explore. Find someone to help translate for you and help you get around. The train system is complex and there's unwritten rules; no one talks on their phones on the train because it's rude. Everyone stands to one side on an escalator. Subways are expensive; it's better to put money on an all-purpose card that you can use on all transport and on vending machines. Embrace the Anime (ie The Ghibli Museum) but don't limit yourself to Anime - there's so much more to experience. Any extra tips to add?

9 famous bands who used Anime in their music videos (Kanye West was one of them)
0:37:14

Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk about nine famous bands who used Anime in their music videos. Daft Punk was the first major hit to use animation, they collaborated with their childhood Anime hero to make the "One More Time" music video. Kanye West recreated Anime scenes in his video clips. Pharrell Williams' "It Girl" music video was Anime-inspired, and The Wkend made tributes to Anime too. What's your favourite Anime inspired MV?

The sad and inconvenient truth about the Anime industry
0:34:01

Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk about "sad and inconvenient truth about the Anime industry" this week. Recently veteran animator (who worked on Naruto) Kazunori Mizuno passed away allegedly because of overworking. Joey and Aki discuss how overworking in the Anime industry is common because less animators are wanting to work in the industry and more episodes are being created. So there's more work for less people. There's a Japanese word, now in the Oxford Dictionary, that describes death by over work, which is "Karōshi." The duo discuss why animators are overworked, they think it has to do with online audience demands, less people buying DVDs and less people wanting to work in the industry. What do you think?

Attack on Titan (Season 2) Ep 1: 'Holy crap, it's an intense episode!'
0:38:08

Joey The Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk, in depth, about Attack on Titan (Season 2)'s first episode (no spoilers here). The duo review the first of 12 episodes in the series. They love it, it's following the manga. Joey's tempted to spoil it (because he's read the manga) but he won't. It's loved by everyone; in the anime community and 'outside' of the community - they can't remember the last time an anime has had this much hype among such a broad audience. They're looking forward to the next ep. Have you seen it? What are your thoughts so far?

Who's your 'Best Girl'? Are Tsundere really the best girls in anime?
0:00:42

Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about their Best Girls. Joey says you're allowed more then one; you can have multiple 2D girls in your life. His Best Girls are often ones who are cute but powerful and confident. He likes anime girls who have many hidden sides. Aki has multiple Best Girls, one being Haruko from Fooly Cooly. A lot of people like Tsundere; characters who are cold or hostile at first and then show a warmer side over time. The duo aren't sure they agree. Who's your Best Girl?

Death Note's Netflix live action is a bad idea, and why anime live actions usually suck
0:30:19

Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest need to talk about Death Note becoming a live action on Netflix. There was an online storm after the Trailer was released because a lot of people are pessimistic about it. Some are waiting 'til it comes out (in full) to cast opinions but Joey and Aki aren't so sure. Light has been made to look like a crack addict instead of the cool, slick character he was in the anime. The live action Director, Adam Wingard, worked on The Blaire Witch Project reboot, which Joey hated. It only got 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, so others must've agreed. Makes Joey even less excited for the Death Note live action. The only redeeming feature is Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. Joey and Aki think most (if not all) anime live actions suck. What about you?

Joey The Anime Man and AkiDearest talk about Slice of Life anime, explaining what the genre is and why you need to watch it. Joey is hooked on Dragon Maid and is excited for Ancien and The Magic Tablet, Aki explains Room Mate anime; an immersive experience. The duo are looking forward to seeing Ghost in the Shell (whether it's good or not) and defend the casting of Scarlett Johansson. She's a fitting choice and they've done a good job with her costume. What do you think?

Joey the Anime Man and Aki Dearest talk about Samuel L. Jackson's hilarious video asking if he likes anime, and the actor cheekily admits he likes Hentai too. The duo explain why we should all start watching anime, its nostalgia and false stigma about being just for kids.  Joey introduces us to the must-see anime movie adaptation coming to our screens soon - Blame, but no one's heard of it.
