The panel talks about the state of horror in cinema right now in 2018.

The panel weighs in on the superhero and horror movies we have to look forward to in theaters during the rest of 2018 and beyond.

We got lots of horror this year so far with The Terror, the Rain, and Dark, which one scared you?

Castle Rock, the Stephen King and JJ Abrams series coming this summer on Hulu, combing through many of King’s previous works into one big bloody soup!

The Haunting of Hill House, from Mike Flanagan, starring Timothy Hutton, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas, coming to Netflix, possibly this Halloween?

The Walking Dead shuffles into its 9th season, losing two more of its main characters. It’s now on its own path, completely different form the comic book run. What direction will it go?

We’ve seen many horror films go straight to the box, like Veronica and The Ritual on Netflix. With streaming being the future for lower budget horror films, what would you like to see getting made on these streaming services?

Will we get Stranger Things season 3 in 2018? What about season 4 of Black Mirror and Channel Zero?

At the press day for Cameron’s upcoming six-part docu-series James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, Cameron spoke about his Avatar sequels while also touching on the current trend of superhero movies, as well as the upcoming Avengers Infinity War:

Fandango reports that Deadpool 2 is outpacing the top R-rated presellers in its 18-year history, beating 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey. In its first 24 hours since tickets went on sale, Deadpool 2 now ranks as the best R-Rated preseller ever and the third-best advance-ticket seller of 2018 after Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.

Weekend estimates have A Quiet Place edging out Rampage to reclaim the top spot with $22 million. A Quiet Place roared back to the top spot this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $132 million. Coming up just behind is Rampage, which earned an estimated $21 million in its second frame, landing the No. 2 spot and bringing its domestic tally to $66 million.

According to Deadline, Paramount Pictures is closing a deal to finance and distribute Rocketman, with Taron Egerton in the role of Elton John and Dexter Fletcher, director of Bohemian Rhapsody, behind the camera.

Disney has debuted the first trailer for Disneynature’s Penguins. Penguins is pitched as a coming-of-age story about an Adélie penguin named Steve, who joins millions of male penguins on the spring march to find a life partner and start a family while trying to survive the killer whales and leopard seals threatening his happily ever after.

Michael Rooker Almost Didn't Star in Guardians of the Galaxy - Comic Book Shopping
00:10:52

In a new episode of Comic Book Shopping, we’re joined by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Michael Rooker to talk about his work on the sequel, his career, his love of comics, and more. If you like comics and celebrity interviews, this is your show. Each week we’re joined by a new guest, who hits up a local comic book shop with host Jon Schnepp and peruses the wares while also discussing their career, upcoming projects, and of course their favorite comic books.

In this week’s episode, Schnepp and Rooker head to Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles and engage in a wide-ranging conversation that covers everything from his love of The Hulk to his knife-throwing skills to the making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Rooker talks about how technological advances in filmmaking have made comic book adaptations better, recounting some experiences on the set of the Marvel movies working against a blue screen. The actor also reveals how he originally couldn’t take the role of Yondu due to his Walking Dead commitments, but he got the call that his character was being killed off just in time to make the Guardians of the Galaxy schedule work.

Rooker also discusses why director James Gunn told him not to pay attention to the comics, talks about Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 and his now-famous “Mary Poppins” line, and of course engages in plenty of comics-centric conversation with Schnepp.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now available on Blu-ray, 4K, DVD, and Digital HD.

Are Superhero Films in Trouble or Will They Be Triumphant in 2018 & Beyond? - Heroes
01:06:14
On this 232nd episode of Heroes (Monday, April 2nd, 2018), Jon Schnepp, Robert Meyer Burnett, John Rocha and Jay Washington discuss the following from the world of Heroes and Villians: Are Superhero films in trouble for 2018 and beyond? Outside of Marvel studios, every other company has had a very hard time establishing their brand, let alone a cohesive universe. What is the problem? Are the studio executives in charge so out of touch that they are fumbling and tripping up what should be the easiest delivery imaginable? The comics have decades of incredible stories, with lots of production design and art for a jumping off point. We have seen many films be shut down and reshot, due to executives second guessing their own audience, and serving up a giant failure sandwich almost every time. When will these failures add up to letting the filmmakers actually do their jobs or is it ultimately the executive whose job it is to make these final and mostly fatal decisions. We remember the failures, but what about the success when this has happened? Mike Allred’s Madman, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg, Frank Miller’s Martha Washington. Are some of these characters not built for this kind of storytelling? Are certain books and comic books not translatable to the big screen or as a series or mini-series? Bizarre characters like Marvel’s Foolkiller, DC’s Inferior Five, Image’s The Darkness. What makes certain characters so easy to identify with, while others are too remote or too goofy or too unrealistic? With these massive shared universes, with many companies planning out these giant event films years in advance that all tie in with each other, is this the way to continue, or should stand-alone adventures be the new franchises? We have both right now, but companies follow the money. Similar to comics, these characters must have a turnover rate every few years to remain fresh and current. What worked for the 90’s is out in the early aughts, as is the same right now. We have actors and actresses who have lived as certain characters for over a decade, and now even entire worlds of characters must be reborn?
