That NEW Pedal Shed – Moving In

If you’re looking for useful information on guitar sounds, this is not the podcast for you!

What it is is a glimpse at what it’s taken to get TPS’s new headquarters up and running. Wow. It felt like we were never going to get here… and we very nearly didn’t! It’s been two solid weeks of long days and late nights, and I’m typing this very sentence some 17 minutes before the video is scheduled to go live at midday GMT+1. Which it probably won’t because YouTube is chewing on the processing. But all that aside… just about moved in to the new place. We threw the cameras and lights up an hour before filming… we finished building the shelves three hours before filming, so what you’re seeing is us sitting down and hitting record for the very first time.

Day one, episode one. Don’t judge us too harshly as we [...]

Awesome Wet/Dry/Wet Tones With Echorec & Space Echo

We thought we’d have a bit of fun and hook up the ultimate wet/dry/wet rig courtesy of three fantastic amplifiers, a couple of all-time classic echo devices and a handful of our favourite pedals.

No agenda, no real learning to be had, just some truly epic sounds and a bit of an emotional connection with the sheer tone!

Massive thanks to for supplying the RE-201 and Echorec 2. We might have accidentally bough the 201 as a moving in present to the new place. Oops!

Please enjoy the episode…

Only One Guitar, One Amp And One Pedal?

What if we could only choose one guitar, one amp and one pedal?

Yes, we are approaching the end of an era as we get ready to turn the lights out for good in That Pedal Shed.
But don’t panic. We are moving to a bigger and better space, so before we do we thought we’d make a couple of more lighthearted shows to bid farewell to ol’ place: this week and next.
What, then, if we were only allowed just one guitar, one amp and one pedal: what would we choose to satisfy ear and soul among the endless options?
As it turns out we reckon this could turn into a regular that runs every few months because as we explain in this episode, your current mood, tastes and most recent experiences always have a big impact on the choices. Next week the choices may have been quite different!
Please enjoy the show…

TPS Pick’N'Mick: Mad Professor Twimble, Stone Deaf FX Syncopy & EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids

Welcome to Pick’N'Mix – today we have the Mad Professor Twimble, Stone Deaf FX Syncopy and Earthquaker Pyramids.

No, this is not our new place – we are deep in heart of Thomann Gear University, a gathering of like-minded gear nuts from across our little planet that took place in May 2018. We had a wonderful time and met some great new friends - thanks to everyone at for putting it on!

Three apologies…
• First, sorry we didn’t spend longer on the Pyramids – we ran out of time! You can see more here:
• Second, sorry the pedal cam isn’t better. It was a fast turnaround time with limited options, so we did what we could.
• Third, sorry about the clipping audio in places. We tended to play a little louder than the other TGU18 attendees and we caught the engineers a little off guard from time to time…. Nevertheless we thank them MASSIVELY for their help and diligence in what [...]

Roland Space Echoes, Dimension D&C… And Matt Schofield!

In this episode we find ourselves at the Thomann Gear University 2018. It was an event held at the retail giant’s headquarters and store in Germany, where a bunch of us descended for a few days to hang out and make video. We were given the run of the store – literally anything we wanted…

So Dan and I found two blokes from Boss who came armed with a couple of discontinued old gems. Of course.

First we plug in the sweetest Roland RE-201 Space Echo we’ve ever seen or heard, and compare it to the current Boss RE-20. Then we move on to something absolutely unique: the Boss Dimension D and C devices, famed for their classic take on chorus. And then we bumped into Matt Schofield who had a theory about the Dimension D and Stevie Ray Vaughan…

What follows is what went down, so we hope you enjoy it.

Befo [...]

Sing! Sing! Sing! With Dan, Mick & Mary Spender

Well this is a bit different! We attended Thomann Gear University during May 2018 and bumped into a lot of friends old and new. One of our dear chums is Mary Spender – find her on YouTube here – and among her many talents is her wonderful singing. So Dan and I decided to take a TPS-sized wrecking ball to that and ask her to sing with us!

This is the audio from our YouTube video of May 22 2018. Watch it here:

What follows is more or less exactly as it happened, in the spirit of trying to get you to sing. Even if you’ve been telling yourself you can’t, you can.
Singing is great for the soul and it’ll make your life better, especially when you do it with other people. Sure, you absolutely will feel silly at first and you might not exactly be Aretha Franklin in the pipes department, but put some time into it and you’ll be amazed what you can achieve. If nothing else, it will really help yo [...]

Getting To Know The Orange OR15 Guitar Amp

In this episode we plug in the Orange OR15 for the first time to see what we can learn. Dan has very limited experience of Orange amps; I have a little more – Mick here – but we’re essentially starting from scratch.

This is audio taken from our YouTube video of Friday 18 May 2018 that you can watch here.

CORRECTION: Mick says Orange Music started in Charing Cross Road, London in the late 1960s.
It actually began in New Compton St in 1968 – Happy 50th Anniversary to Cliff and everyone at Orange!

Even if you don’t have an OR15 there are some goodly amp basics in this episode, for example the relationship between gain, master and headroom at 7:44 and delays used in the front or in the loop at 15:02. Full timings below…
Apart from all that, we use a selection of common gain types and a new pedal or two to get some tones going. We hope this kind of approach will encourage you to try stuff and raise some questions [...]

Dan & Mick’s 5-Drink German Podcast From TGU18

Willkommen to Thomann Gear University 2018!

We’ve been invited to Germany by the nice people at Thomann whom you can visit here.

Busses, trains, aeroplanes… lost baggage. But we arrived, and when we arrived we found that the equally nice people at Shure had left us an MV88 i-Mic thingythang as a welcome gift. Let’s see if it works.

So, we hit Bamburg with an iPhone and the mic, and this is what happened. Cheers y’all.

Guten tag!

Graham Coxon Extra Bits & An Alternative Pedalboard

An edit of some extra bits we recorded when Graham Coxon came to visit for the main video in March 2018.

This is the audio from a video on our YouTube channel from May 15 2018.

The original, full-length video is here: Also available as a podcast further down our playlist.

One of the reasons for Graham’s visit was that he wanted Dan to put together a separate pedalboard that he could use for various creative projects: he wanted something portable but versatile; different but familiar; capable of inspiration over complication.
So this episode comprises a quick flick through that board as Graham plugs in for the first time, interspersed with some Coxon gems as you would rightly expect. It’s not a full episode per sé, but loads of people have asked for some extra footage from the day. So here it is…

We are massively grateful to Graham for giv [...]

Great Vox AC30 Tones With Dan’s Pedalboard

Dan reflects on his recent reconnection with his vintage Vox AC30, following some gig and recording preparation with his band Tin Spirits.

This is the audio from our YouTube show, 11 May 2018 that you can watch here:

Dan is using the AC30 connected to a Fryette Power Station to provide some attenuation, which helps put the amp in a sweet spot in terms of tone, dynamics and feel… but without excessive volume.
Using that as the base tone, we go through his current selection of boosts, OD and fuzz to get all kinds of drive textures, throwing in some modulation and ambience for good measure.
Dan is using the AC30 in its (modded) EF86 channel.

No Speakers! Can We Go Direct & Enjoy It?

Our hand is forced. Regular viewers will know that we love our valve amps. Transformers, speakers, glowing tubes… all of that stuff that has made the best guitar sounds of all time, or at least as far as we’re concerned. BUT! The hammer has come down. We have to go direct.

This episode is the audio from our YouTube video of 04 May 2018:

We’ve finally sent our neighbours over the edge and That Pedal Shed is to be no more. We’ve been silenced. So do we lose the rest of a rare (and bloomin’ expensive) filming day, or do we try something else?As it happens we have the Mooer Radar on hand – a digital, IR-based speaker simulator among other talents. Let’s hit it with our Plexi and see what we think. In addition, we have a BluGuitar AMP1 and BlueBox combination. How about we go direct to our audio interface, put on the ol’ cans and see if we can make the best of it.
What unfolds is partly predictable, partly surprising, [...]

The Great Blindfold Listening Test #1

Oh blimey – you’re either going to love this or hate it. We’re not big fans of the blind test for many, many reasons. However, we thought it was about time we (you) engaged in one. So here we go…

This is the audio from our YouTube video from May 1 2018.

It might not make much sense as a Podcast… or it might be brilliant!

Grab a pen and paper. The test starts at 1:28 and there are 10 sounds for you to identify that contain…

Thoughts On P90 Pickups & Humbucker Comparisons

We take a gentle stroll down the path of P90 pickups. We found ourselves in the lucky position of having a bunch of wonderful P90-equipped guitars at our disposal, so what better excuse to plug ’em in and have a listen next to some similar guitars that use humbuckers.

This audio is taken from our YouTube video, Friday 27 April 2018,

As always with us, this isn’t a scientific comparison, and yes the guitars have some significant differences. Regular viewers will know that we’re more interested in the variables than the similarities… because that’s real life!

We plug in all kinds of guitars with different levels of gain and have a listen. Simple as that – please enjoy the episode…

Pick’N'Mix – Laney LA30BL, Supro Tremolo, ZVEX BOR, Wampler Reflection, BCC Iommi TI Boost

This is Dan’N’Mick’s Pick’N’Mix where we feature four (or five) pedals (and amps) that are new (to us anyway).
Our agenda is purely to plug them in, see what cool sounds and features we find, and combine them in whatever way inspires. That’s it!

This episode first aired as a YouTube video, 10 April 2018.

There’s a strong Laney theme in this episode, not least because the splendid people there offered us a first look at the new-for-2018 LA30BL. Dan got all fizzy about this when we saw it at NAMM back in January 2018. And it would be entirely rude to play it without the Black Country Customs TI Booster, right?
But the fun doesn’t stop there. ZVEX’s Box Of Rock is beloved of so many people. A so-say ‘JTM45 in a box’, it’s high time it got an airing on TPS. We’re also a-wobblin’ and a-shimmerin’ thanks to Supro’s Tremolo – with the all-important Harmonic mode – and the new Reflection Reverb from [...]

Which 15W Amp? Fender Blues Jr, Vox AC15 & Fender Bassbreaker 15

We take a detailed look at the three most popular 15-watt 1×12 valve combo amps currently on the market: Vox AC15, Fender Blues Junior and Fender Bluesbreaker 15.

This episode originally aired 29 December 2017 as a video on our You Tube channel.

Some of this won’t make sense because this was originally a video… people are asking us for podacasts of the audio and we’re obliging!

We feature all of these amps on the show from time to time… and are subsequently asked to compare them. So sit back, grab yourself a refreshing beverage and join us as we get into it. This is a long one because there’s a lot of ground to cover and – as regular viewers will know by now – short and snappy isn’t really our style.

Dan’s Fender Custom Shop ’52 & ’63 Teles Compared

This episode introduces Dan’s new Fender Custom Shop 1952 Heavy Relic Telecaster to the TPS Family… compared of course to Dan’s NOG (Number One Guitar), Ol’ Red.

It originally aired March 27 2018 as a video on our YouTube Channel.

Ol’ Red really is a spectacular guitar – a Fender Custom Shop ’63 Telecaster that Dan has had from new. It’s done a lot of gigs. The question on everybody’s lips: how do they compare in sound? Let’s find out…

The new guitar is…
2017 Fender Custom Shop 1952 Heavy Relic Telecaster
Ash body in Heavy Relic Butterscotch Blonde
Maple neck with ’65 Strat ‘C’ shape
51 Nocaster Relic neck pickup
51 Nocaster Relic bridge pickup
Medium jumbo frets on a 9.5-inch radius ’board

Five Modern Fuzz Pedals – ZVex, Thorpy, ProAnalog & Wampler

We follow up from our recent adventures in vintage-style fuzzes with some slightly more modern excursions around the fantabulous fields of fuzz.

This episode first aired Jan 5 2018 as a YouTube video,

This is the audio from that video so some of this might not make absolute sense without the visuals!

Now clearly this is a product sector absolutely awash with wacky, weird and wonderful devices from a plethora of makers, be they individuals or multinational corporations. So how on Earth do you just pick five? Well, you just pick five, get on with it and wait for the deluge of comments from people wishing you’d chosen something different. If that sounds like you, consider this as Part 1 with more to follow in time, based on your helpful suggestions.
For everybody else, we hope this provides a little context to some of the other options out there to a strictly vintage-style fuzz and e [...]

Five Spring Reverb Pedals & A Fender Super Reverb Amp

We get all springy with a selection of reverb pedals designed to sound like a great amp spring reverb.

This episode originally aired December 1 2017 as a YouTube video.

What you’re hearing hear is solely the audio, so our apologies if some things don’t make sense like they would in the video.

Two of today’s pedals contain real springs while the other three use digital business to emulate the sound. All the way through we have our trusty Fender Super Reverb amplifier for comparison, and a bit of light overdrive just for fun. Which one do you like best?
