46:53 - New York Red Bulls v Chivas: why couldn't the Red Bulls take advantage of a weakened Chivas team, and what should they have done to change things up in the attack?

56:48 - Club America v Toronto: Miguel Herrera left with nothing but the obvious to complain about as Michael Bradley and Alex Bono help Toronto make the Concacaf Champions League Final.

CONCACAF Champions League Review, Plus USMNT Could be Heading to the Copa America in 2019

We review all the goals, cards, and controversial refereeing decisions... and say the word "undergarments" more times in one show than we ever thought possible.

Weekend Review: Zlatan's El Trafico Impact, Spurs Reverse History, Jesse Lingard is the New Thomas Muller
01:15:47

Daryl and Taylor spend a solid 20+ minutes reviewing El Trafico in more detail than just saying, "Zlatan is incredible" over and over again. How did LAFC jump out to that early lead, what did Sigi Schmid do to get the game back under control, and (of course) how incredible was Zlatan's MLS opener?

After that, we take a look at the Premier League (with specific attention on Tottenham's victory at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool's dramatic win over Crystal Palace). We also attempt to figure out how Bayern Munich were able to make the third best team in the Bundesliga look like the worst team in the bottom German division.

USA v Paraguay In-Depth Review and International Window Round-Up with Yahoo's Henry Bushnell
49:55

With Daryl out of the office, Taylor called up Yahoo Sports' Henry Bushnell to discuss the USA's 1-0 victory over Paraguay. We take a look at which individuals (including Dave Sarachan) helped/hurt their stock, as well as the inherent attacking problems in that 4-1-4-1 formation.

Henry's 5 quick takeaways from the USA-Paraguay match can be found here: https://sports.yahoo.com/five-takeaways-usmnts-win-paraguay-014614459.html

After that, Taylor picked Henry's brain about an absurd number of games from the international window: are Spain now the favorites to win the World Cup, should Belgium/Argentina/France be worried, and are Brazil better without Neymar? The answer to that one is pretty emphatically No. Anyway, all that and much, much more!

At 49:52, we also talk a little England v Italy. The Three Lions didn't win, but we think we hear the beginnings of some sort of roar. Or, at the very least, a purr.

After that, we take some time breaking down England's 1-0 victory over the Netherlands. Has Gareth Southgate got the players believing in his system? MLS Terminology 101: Explaining GAM, TAM, and Everything Else
01:27:31

We break down all of the terminology (esoteric and otherwise) relating to Major League Soccer... and yes, we consider this a public service. Topics discussed include:

1) Single entity and how it kind of impacts every aspect of Major League Soccer.

2) Salary cap (is this actually a thing that exists?)

3) Designated Players and Young DPs

4) Homegrown players (what are they and who counts as one)

5) Generation ADIDAS and all the confusing history there

6) International roster spots and the immigration process

7) Special Discovery Players: this is definitely a thing, right?

8) What is the re-entry draft and who gets thrown in there?

9) Why did DC United pay money to Atlanta for Yamil Asad?

10) What triggers VAR?

All that and much, much more! Plus, there's the Scouting Network and  (relatively) brief rant about the speculation surrounding the 2026 World Cup.

CONCACAF Champions League TV Troubles, Carlos Cordeiro's Campaign Promises, and Alexis Sanchez: Idiom Creator
01:02:52

It's another Listener Question spectacular! We respond to six different queries... and yes, I didn't want to use the word "questions" twice in two sentences. Anyway...

1) What is the "dribbling" stat and what are "completed dribbles?"

2) Why isn't the CONCACAF Champions League broadcast on any English-language channels in the US?

3) What are the differences between the League Cup and the FA Cup?

4) Which campaign promises will be the easiest for Carlos Cordeiro to keep and which ones will be the most difficult?

5) What are the similarities/differences between the situation at San Jose circa 2005 and those facing Columbus today?

6) Where does the phrase "bedding in" come from and what does it mean?

US Soccer Election Reaction with George Quraishi and Alexi Lalas
01:16:08

The President is gone. All hail the President.

With Carlos Cordeiro now the head of the United States Soccer Federation, Daryl and Taylor take a look at all the events of Election Day in Orlando.

To do so, we were joined by Howler Magazine's George Quraishi to get the (more or less) instant reaction to Cordeiro's victory. George clues us in to the mood in the room, the politicking that happened between votes, and the deliciousness of his giant cookie.

After that, we spoke with Alexi Lalas, who provided insight into how Cordeiro was able to sway the Athlete's Council, what was going on with Eric Wynalda's final speech, and why the "Change Candidates" couldn't pull it together in the end.

Lastly, Daryl and Taylor give their thoughts on how Cordeiro played the game to get the win, what his major short-term goals will be, and what the future holds for the defeated candidates. We also discuss further what Cordeiro did to get the athlete block on his side, which was the start of his electoral victory.

US Soccer Presidential Election Preview
01:12:16

Daryl and Taylor attempt to assemble their own Voltrons/Frankenstein's Monsters from their favorite parts of the 8 Presidential Candidates' platforms. Pro/Rel, Diversity and Equality, Youth Development, and avoiding FIFA corruption all get mentions.

They then look ahead to the election itself: who is voting, how are they voting, and what are the possible wrinkles on the day itself?

Plus, there's an outtake on the end that made us both chuckle.

If you want more insight into the election or the platforms of the individual candidates, Jeff Carlisle at ESPN has you covered: http://www.espn.com/soccer/team/united-states/660/blog/post/3371583/your-guide-to-ussf-election-who-will-win-caliguiri-carter-cordeiro-gans-martino-solo-winograd-wynalda?src=com

Coping Strategies for USMNT Fans in 2018
57:53

Daryl and Taylor take a look back at the USA's 0-0 draw with Bosnia: who was making the tactical decisions, why weren't more youngsters given a chance, and what (if anything) did we learn?

We then discuss our expectations for 2018, specifically how we're going to be approaching the US Mational Team at a time when things seem about as bleak as ever. Then we answer your listener questions, including:

1) Will the UEFA Nations League prevent dual nationals from playing for the USA (we took this as an opportunity to have a fairly lively discourse about the competition as a whole). It basically boils down to "greatest thing ever" or "okayest thing ever?"

2) Should the US Mational Team focus more on theoretically qualifying for the Olympics or theoretically competing in the possible future iteration of the Copa America Centenario (plus four).

3) What is form and when does a player go from very good to world class, and vice versa?

On January 18, we collaborated with Howler magazine to host a live show at Jose Pistola's bar in Philadelphia.

We close the show by playing a couple rounds of the Wikipedia Game with the brilliant Brooks Peck of Dirty Tackle, who probably deserves to be in the title of this show but also has not yet played for the USMNT.

01:06:22

Official Referee Consultant Scott Zawadzki returns to the show to answer your officiating-centric questions, including...

Why don’t referees give more cards for “talking back” to the referee?

If you could referee a match involving one of the bad boys of soccer (past or present), who would it be?

What things about the rules, commonly said by fans or pundits, have little to no basis in the actual rules?

How can I get started refereeing and what advice do you have for beginners?

All that, and much, much more on a jam-packed episode of The Total Soccer Show.

01:19:01

USMNT v Panama Deep-Dive Preview: How to Break Down A Compact Defense
01:12:13

On today's show, we discuss the Panama national team: who will manager Hernan Dario Gomez start and who will he sit? How defensive will they be? What attacking threats do they have at their disposal? Will Jaime Penedo ever not be their goalkeeper?

We then turn our collective attention to Bruce Arena's squad. What formation makes the most sense? What tactical approach best capitalizes on Panama's vulnerabilities? How many goals will Clint Dempsey score using only nastiness/sheer force of will? At least 2 of those questions will be answered.

We also take a quick look at the US U17's as they prepare for the start of the U17 World Cup... and we update the TSS Scouting Network.

Noah Davis on Sunil Gulati, advice for freelancers, USA v Panama
49:23

Daryl talks to freelance writer Noah Davis, whom you may know from AmericanSoccerNow.com or from one of his many freelance articles.

Noah recently wrote a longform profile of US Soccer President Sunil Gulati and so Daryl peppers Noah with questions about Il Presidente.

READ NOAH'S STORY HERE: http://www.whatahowler.com/sunil-gulati-fifa-101/

Starting at 29:25, Noah also offers some advice for aspiring freelancers writers. Two links to pieces he references in that segment can be found here:

At 41:30, we talk USMNT vs Panama, and Noah unveils his masterplan to play Christian Pulisics. I think it could work.

Champions League review: Neymar, Mbappe, Ancelotti and more
52:13

So much Champions League to talk about!

There's PSG's win over Bayern, in which Mbappe shone, Neymar was unselfish, and Ancelotti was getting sacked in the morning.

Chelsea's last minute composure paid off, Barcelona continued their own-goal streak, and FC Basel's Dimitri Oberlin had the best defensive header of all time.

All that and more on our Champions League thumbs up/down review.

Listener questions: Quick free kicks, Barcelona's coach, Altidore's starting spot
44:35

Hello!

On today's show, we discuss Bruce Arena's comments about "no new faces" for the final World Cup qualifiers, Weston McKennie's new contract at Schalke, and those odd Christian Politic transfer rumors.

Then, listener questions:

1. Why are teams sometimes allowed to take quick free kicks?

e.g., --> this Houston Dynamo goal: https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2017-09-23-new-york-city-fc-vs-houston-dynamo/details/video/135249

2. Why did Barcelona choose Ernesto Valverde as their new coach?

3. Should Jozy Altidore start at the World Cup?

4. What is Daryl and Taylor's coaching philosophy for their adult team?

US Open Cup Review and Young Americans in the Bundesliga
53:13

We break down Sporting KC's 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup Final, and ponder age-old questions like what was New York doing? Why did Sal Zizzo momentarily decide marking was unimportant? How did Sporting KC make the win look so comfortable.

Today's show is sponsored by SeatGeek. Download the SeatGeek app, go to the settings tab, click "add promo code" and enter "TSS" to get a $20 rebate on your first ticket.

Weston McKennie got 57 minutes in Schalke's 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich. We watched those 57 minutes and had a number of thoughts on the performance.

Meanwhile, Christian Pulisic went the full 90 (and scored) in Dortmund's 3-0 win over Hamburg. His goal in particular merits viewing... and then listening to us discussing our viewing.

45:19

Daryl called up Mike Goodman, formerly of ESPN and Grantland, currently of FiveThirtyEight and the Double Pivot Podcast, to talks tactics and analytics.

Mike is really good at talking analysis and stats in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way, so we get into what the US could do and do better, how to get the most out of Christian Pulisic, and could/should the US give wingbacks a try ...

We also talk Expected Goals, explaining what it is and why it exists, and how it can be used to better understand soccer, and look at some tactical trends in the Premier League so far this season.

Listener Questions: Dream USMNT Managers, Possible American Wingbacks, and the Impact of Catalan Independence on La Liga
48:13

We answer listener questions, to the best of our ability.

1) If you could pick anyone to manage the USMNT, who would it be and why?

2) Why doesn't the UK have a national team?

3) If Catalonia achieves independence from Spain, what will be the impact on La Liga and the Spanish national team?

4) Why doesn't the USMNT utilize a formation that features a back three with wingbacks?

5) What do we appreciate the most about the TSS community?
