412: 4 Ways of Being Present and Relieving Stress and Anxiety

In this episode, Gina discusses the importance of being present for the process of relieving stress and anxiety.  Gina points out undesirable factors that inhibit our stress and anxiety relief, including:  attachment, excessive forward thinking (future focused), imaginary thoughts and negative expectations.

Gina suggests four action steps to be in the present and cultivate mindfulness:
1) Observe events without judging them (anxiety stems from judgment)

2) Integrate mindfulness activities into your daily life (walking dog, mowing the lawn, gardening, at work... fully immerse yourself to what you are doing)

3) Let go of expectations (expectations are often not positive)

4) Mindfulness meditation (meditation fosters new default of being present)

How to use your mindful awareness during those inevitable moments of change so you can feel less anxious:

1) Ride the waves of change
Change arises naturally — but it can generate discomfort and overwhelm in the process. When we acknowledge that strong emotions are present, we have a better chance of navigating what life throws our way.

2) Bring up your resilience
When adjusting to new circumstances, it’s easy to become frustrated with ourselves. Let go of feelings of disappointment or anxiety with a gentle shift. Be kind to yourself: Remember, you are not the only person who is adapting to something new. With this resilience, we can learn, grow, and recover a sense of well-being during a time of change. One way to have a reminder of your personal resilience is to star in your journal when you have been through a challenge and found yourself on the other side intact and even better off than before

3) Soothe anxiety around uncertainty
Most of us have a list of identities we associate with — be it a job title, a family role, or a citizenship. When these things change, we often feel we are losing the characteristics that define us. Rather than getting caught in a fixed idea of who we ought to be (or used to be) be willing to have room for something new...something more. See the uncertainty as part of life that we all encounter and that it is not personal.

400: Finding Joy Beyond Discomfort

In this episode Gina offers listeners a series of questions they can ask themselves and suggestions they can implement during their experience of the discomfort associated with anxiety and panic.

Turning to face the discomfort we are presented with during high anxiety moments can offer us the opportunity we are seeking to overcome the discomfort.

Questions to ask oneself:

What if there were more beyond that?
What if distracting was keeping us in the loop and holding us back from the joy in life?
What if chasing the desire to make the discomfort stop is actually keeping the pain and discomfort alive?
What if the joy was in going through vs giving in to distraction and running away from discomfort?
What if what we are looking for is in the opening of moving through the discomfort of what we think should be different than it is?

Suggestions to implement:

1.Slow down
2.Get to neutral and be curious about the situation (take the personalization out of it ...look at it as if you were a researcher without an agenda)
3.Remind yourself why you want to get to the other side of this situation and that it is joy that is found from going through the urge to fight flee or freeze when it is discomfort that you are dealing with not true danger.

Hi, Gina,

I discovered your podcast online and have been delving into the many episodes you have made available. I really have enjoyed listening and am learning a lot. I took your advice and decided to write a letter to my anxiety. I wanted to share it with you. Thank you for your excellent program.

Dear Mr. Fight-or-flight,

We’ve been roommates for a couple of years now, although you have come to live with me periodically at different times in my life. Each time you have moved in with me, you told me you were concerned about my safety and that you felt it necessary to be my protector
I think it’s time we had a little chat.
I know you mean well, but you have gone a little haywire in your endeavors to protect me and you have some very unpleasant ways of keeping me safe. You can be extremely demanding and loud, insisting that I listen to you and pay attention to you at the most inopportune times.
If I don’t pay attention to you, you just get louder and if I try to push you away, wow, you can be a real bear! Sometimes you try to scare me into listening to you which is hardly an acceptable solution to me. I am laying down a few ground rules.
First, I refuse to let you control me and run my life. I have some good friends that I have lost touch with since you came along and I want to renew my relationships with them.
My good friend, Live-in-the-moment has been reminding me of the good times we once had together and I want to be with her more often. I guess I can’t stop you from tagging along if you must, but she will be the primary focus of my attention when I am with her.
My cousins, Goodness and Mercy have been telling me they would like to have a greater presence in my life as well and they will be shadowing me every day just so you are aware.

There are a couple of other traits you have that I find very annoying.
You are notorious for propagating fake news which I’m sure you have heard of by now.
Many of the stories you have been telling me are simply not true, and they are always so negative and judgmental! They are kind of like reading tragic fiction all day and all night.
My neighbor, Mr. Wisemind has informed me of these tendencies of yours and I intend to rewrite those tragic tales you’ve been telling me into something positive. You can be so convincing sometimes and I’ve let you take me on some pretty hellish rides. This is going to stop, maybe not all at once but it will change over time.
My Aunt Mybody has encouraged me to sit down and relax with her and take time to breathe and listen to her. She is one of the most realistic, down-to-earth relatives I have and I need to spend some quality time with her every day. I’ve also been inviting Wisdom and Favor to accompany me on my life journey.

So … I appreciate your good intentions and your desire to help and I’ll be there for you when you feel you can’t live another moment without my undivided attention.
Everyone needs a little compassion and that includes you. I’m grateful for the things I have been learning because of you. All that being said, I will not continue to reward your bullying behavior by giving into your incessant demands.
Don’t be surprised if I just watch you from a distance and separate myself from you. I have a secret place I can go where you won’t be allowed to disturb me.

If you find yourself resistant to what is and your anxiety ramping up try these 4 tips:

1) Let it go; really like holding a hot rock...let go! surrender on a tough day; stop fighting. There is no resolution in the fight so give yourself permission to stop fighting.

2) Float; doesn't require practice, and works better with less force: like an inner inactivity. Remember how to float in the water...you have to relax your muscles and let go...this is just the same!

3) Practice Acceptance: allow the situation to be, it is what it is, it is OK if you can't control the situation. You may not like it but you can accept that it is what is happening.

4) Use the rule of opposites: take the opposite action from what your anxiety is leading you to do.

3 Steps To Relieve Your Anxiety Fatigue
1) Get into a regular pattern of meditation and have good sleep hygiene
2) Eat real foods, avoid refined foods and sugar
3) Do an activity, such as going for a walk, something good for the body, which will help it get back to baseline
-the exhaustion and fatigue can be a coping mechanism for the body (to avoid the stress that is bringing about the anxiety to begin with)
-being tired of the fatigue can lead to depression, thus any activity can be beneficial, such as listening to uplifting music and walking
-hobbies can be helpful in this way over time

356: Shifting Out Of Anxiety Focused Living

In this episode, Coach Gina explores the importance of shifting out of anxiety focused living.  If you are seeing things through an attitude of gratitude lens, your experience of the world is by default much more peaceful.  Your thoughts can act as self-fulfilling prophecies, especially with expectations of anxiety (based on plans for future actions or environments).  Not everyone is aware of their expectations for anxiety and that they help precipitate anxious states.

Action steps to change the anxiety lens you are looking though:

1) Awareness: you need to be aware you are doing it and being so will remove the power from the lens

2) Relaxation: some kind of daily meditation or relaxation is a critical and very helpful first step that can change your brain and view your environment differently
