Got Mom Overwhelm?| Leslie Bruce on Social Media, Perfectionism, and Pregnancy
00:36:31

#1 New York Times bestselling author and award-winning entertainment journalist LESLIE BRUCE speaks candidly about overwhelming life moments from going back to work after baby, to fertility, to her complicated second pregnancy and recent bedrest. "Supporting overwhelmed mamas" is a tagline of her popular Instagram feed (@leslieannebruce), and as co-author of "Celebrate" with Lauren Conrad, I knew she'd be the perfect mom to talk some sense into me about what she calls the “optic peer pressure” of social media. It's literally her job to get that perfect shot, and she's happy to acknowledge the work and "hair and makeup" that go into it. Her honest and irreverent take on the struggles of motherhood can be found on her blog UNPACIFIED. As an overwhelmed mom myself (stories for another time), our conversation feels like a much needed post bedtime wine hang. Happy listening, Ellie Knaus

What was the most overwhelming moment in your life as a mom? How did you overcome it? We'd love to know in the comments of our @atomicmoms episode post.

BONUS: Preventing Next Larry Nassar, Secrets vs. Surprises, and Sexual Predators w/ Patty Fitzgerald, Child Safety Expert
00:12:51

#169 After our special live episode with child safety educator Pattie Fitzgerald officially ended, we kept talking so we kept recording! In this bonus episode, we discuss:

  • Why we should encourage surprises and ban secrets
  • How to react if our child hints that something may be off
  • And how we can prevent our children from becoming victims of the next Larry Nassar

Sound-wise, consider yourself a part of the party. Because it was the end of the night, and we were not planning on sharing this, you'll hear parents rushing off to meet their sitters and our little dog Chubs even makes an appearance.

The atmosphere is relaxed, but Pattie Fitzgerald's advice is top notch! And we are so grateful to her for being so generous with her time.

How to Protect Our Children from Sexual Abuse (Live in L.A.) Pattie Fitzgerald, safety expert
01:21:30

In our first Atomic Moms Live, child safety educator Pattie Fitzgerald teaches us how to empower our children and prevent them from becoming victims of sexual abuse. After all, the "tricky person" (potential predator) is nearly always someone the family knows. We learn: how to teach our children: "you are the boss of your body", why "stranger danger" is ineffective, the ways in which predators groom our children (like "accidental" touching games), how to keep your child safe from "cousin creepy", the family code word - when to use it and what to do, and sleepovers - the ones to avoid and how to politely get out of them.

Ellie's mom-friend Jessica summed it up: "It's a Party at Ellie's. Wine! Cheese! A frank discussion about child predators!"

Be sure to check out our after-show bonus episode (3/28) for more important tips. x Ellie Knaus

Sir Ken Robinson, PhD (#1 TED Talk) | An Education Revolution
00:36:03

#167: The most watched TED Talk in history "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" made Sir Ken Robinson, PhD. a widely known crusader of non-traditional education around the world. In his new book YOU, YOUR CHILD, AND SCHOOL, co-authored with Lou Aronica, Sir Robinson argues that we should demand an education system revolution for our children and the future of humanity. No big deal.

“One of the deep problems in education, which should concern you as a parent, is the limited idea of intelligence that permeates school culture.” - Sir Ken Robinson

Always witty and super down to earth, Sir Ken Robinson discusses on Atomic Moms: how parents can help their children find the best school for them to thrive, the billion dollar testing industry, ADHD, how our current education system can be compared to industrialized farming, who is actually at fault in the school dropout crisis, and why dance is as important as mathematics in school! xo Ellie

Everything Happens| Kate Bowler: bestselling memoir, cancer, faith, and toddler-wrangling
00:36:17

Meet Kate Bowler, our new podcast mom friend. She's funny, sweet, and really, really smart, but like in a very-humble-and-also-loves-reality-shows kind of way. She teaches at Duke Divinity School. She's a historian specializing in the American prosperity gospel: think Joel Osteen. And she bravely challenges the strongly held religious belief that "everything happens for a reason" in her New York Times bestselling memoir EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON: AND OTHER LIES I'VE LOVED. Because, let's be honest, you'd have to be insane to think there could be any possible "reason" for this beautiful, vibrant young mother living with incurable stage 4 cancer to have her life cut short. She is not going to get better. And she is letting us all in on her journey.

We discuss the challenges in finding a mom crew, the ways our children teach us to live moment to moment, and the Instagram-worthy "simplicity trap" (I really think I'm onto something here. And yes, I still want this.) And she shares honestly about living with an incurable disease. Glennon Doyle, author of #1 NYT bestseller Love Warrior writes "I left Kate's story feeling more present, grateful, and a hell of a lot less alone." I felt similarly after our conversation.

I am so grateful for this memoir (she reads it herself on audible!), her podcast, and our chat together.

Our returning guest Stephanie Small consulted with local officials following the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary, as well as in San Bernadino, Paris, and Aurora, Colorado. She has committed her life to helping people heal after these atrocities. I'm honored that she took my call. I have recorded this conversation today in hopes of getting her message out to concerned families across the nation. x Ellie Knaus

Whether your child makes herself sick getting straight A's or has mastered the art of procrastination, whether she's just starting preschool or waiting for the college acceptance letters, our guests have an important message for us all about our true role as parents. x Ellie Knaus

In this hilarious mom-friend episode, we're talking: calm walks turned stressful stroller fits, dixie cups full of wine, babies falling off beds, husbands with solitary jobs (screenwriter vs composer), baby raising while working on set, co-sleeping, crib mishaps, moving houses, children's privacy, social media free weddings, photo book making, evacuating fires, surviving the holidays, finding quiet time, postpartum complications, pubes, and the ridiculous way Ellie got a parking ticket.

Rachel Blanchard is an actress best known for - PEEP SHOW, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS & FARGO. She can currently be seen on Directv’s YOU, ME, HER. Ellie also wants everyone to remember she was Cher in the television show CLUELESS. Her husband Jeremy Turner is Former Assistant Principal Cello with the Metropolitan Opera turned Emmy nominated composer (and the composer of Atomic Moms theme song!). P.S. Rachel never got that donut.

Ellie Knaus acts as host, senior editor, executive producer, show runner, technical director, president of programming, you get the point. This is a podcast by one mom for all of us moms.

Special thanks to sound engineer Owen O'Neill and composer Jeremy Turner.

Cut the Crap and Get Organized in 2018 | Robyn Reynolds, Hollywood's Professional Organizer
00:47:08

Happy New Year! We're back with brand new content next week, but while I recover from some sort of holiday season plague, here's one of our favorites from May 2017. Certified organizer Robyn Reynolds swears we can organize ANYTHING that’s worth keeping and bring harmony into our homes. This single mom with a can-do spirit and no-nonsense attitude whips Ellie’s haphazard “put away” habits into shape.

She teaches us how to streamline our kitchen in order to turn our morning routines into a well-caffeinated machine.

She walks us through the process of getting our closets under control (and saving money in the process!)

She gives an excellent mom hack for how the heck to keep track of what-you-put-where in all those darn diaper bag pockets.

In this podcast you’ll also laugh at what a rainy day means at Robyn’s L.A. home and how to keep your cool with home maintenance issues, like when the 1-800 customer service for your broken washing machine is leaving you high and dry.

Bravo TV, are you listening? Cause Atomic Moms is pretty sure that Robyn Reynolds, Long Island’s answer to Marie Kondo, needs her own show! xx Ellie Knaus

Constructing Hope| Empowering Struggling Mothers with Faith Fowler
00:36:45

(October 18, 2016) Detroit has a mother; her name is Rev. Faith Fowler. Best-selling author Mitch Albom (“Tuesdays With Morrie”) says our guest Rev. Faith Fowler is “…the most important currency of our city, a loving, egoless, inspiring leader who doesn’t see color, doesn’t see class, who looks at our poorest, most neglected citizens and sees only hope and opportunity. And humor.” She cares for and empowers thousands, including homeless mothers and children. In this episode, we talk to this fierce champion of ALL HUMANS about race, breaking the poverty cycle, addiction, her non-profit entrepreneurial projects including Tiny Homes. We chat about why she goes “tire hunting”, how can we be most effective with our talents, and she answers tough questions about parenting.

Even when you’ve lost faith, there’s Faith.

Relationship S.O.S. | Dr. Laura Berman on intimacy, marriage, and motherhood
00:51:39

Originally aired: Dec 6, 2016. Join us over the holidays on Instagram and Facebook!

If you liked our "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Having Kids" episode, you'll LOVE this one too. You’ve seen Dr. Laura Berman as a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Dr. Oz Show, and The Steve Harvey Show. New York Times bestselling author, world renowned sex and relationship educator, and clinical professor of ob-gyn and psychiatry at Northwestern University Dr. Berman is here to help us mamas elevate our relationships with the ultimate “Jedi Mind Trick.” She swears that mastering our energy is the key to living an empowered and loving life. We = atoms. Atoms = energy. And let’s face it, most of us go about our lives unconsciously playing off each other’s energy, for better or worse. In this podcast, Dr. Laura Berman shares with host Ellie Knaus and guest co-host Bridget Moloney-Sinclair findings from her latest book, Quantum Love: Use Your Body’s Atomic Energy to Create the Relationship You Desire. She schools us in how we can cultivate feelings of optimism, hopefulness, and curiosity, and act from an empowered and truthful place as “a co-creator of our reality”. She swears it’s possible to hold onto our positive energetic state (good vibes) regardless of the cranky downers we have to interact with. And you’ll be blown away by the life-changing events that led Dr. Berman to developing this book (it was ‘another freak and growth experience’ (AFGE) after another).

Because Dr. Laura Berman is a leading expert in sex and love, we also talk about the first-year parenting phenomenon (ya know, the “I want to murder my partner” one) and what that’s really about. We also talk bedroom times: what sex means to men, how we can untangle ourselves from the associated shame, and also how we can raise sexually healthy children. Plus Dr. Berman shares a big-time parenting challenge she recently experienced with her impulsive teenage son and how she consciously handled it with both authority and love.

Bonding with Your Baby (And Beyond) | Dr. Victoria Simms, PhD
00:42:18

#153: Child development specialist and philanthropist Dr. Victoria Simms is here to help us bond with our children. We discuss the rituals and routines backed by science that can help our little ones feel safe, loved, and resilient. Dr. Simms is the president and founder of the nonprofit Simms/Mann Institute, trailblazing in the whole child approach to caring for our children and developmental neurogenetics. We all know separation anxiety can be frustrating, heart-wrenching, and guilt-inducing. Our guest has created a darling multi-faceted tool for families called “CuddleBright” to make transitions smoother and separation less overwhelming. And for those of you who had an “insecure attachment” with your own parent, Dr. Simms gives us hope. There is always the opportunity to break the generational patterns of drama and grow, heal, and thrive in our relationship with our kids. xx Ellie Knaus

Body CONSCIOUS | Nikki DeLoach, Jen Dede: open-heart surgery, fertility, friendship
01:06:22

What is your body trying to tell you? Has it ever felt like it has betrayed you? And what wisdom did you glean from the experience? This week Atomic Moms podcast is back at what it does best: commiserating over sleepless nights + expressing the grit and determination necessary to live fully and discovering the tools to do so, with a Cali-dose of woo woo and optimism.

Friends Nikki DeLoach (Awkward) and Jen Dede (Shameless) have supported each other through hell and back and aren't afraid to crack a joke about it. They speak candidly about Jen's 8 year struggle with fertility, Nikki's harrowing experience with her newborn's open-heart surgery two months ago, and our fear of the big D and we don't mean Dallas OR Divorce. OK fine...I'll say it. Death. Join us in celebrating the launch of their super positive, uplifting, and crazy honest site: What We Are: A community of women celebrating our beautifully unfiltered selves.

Who's Got Anxiety? | Emily Price, LCSW, SEP
00:56:31

Originally released 1/24/17. How do we handle the transitions we experience as mothers without losing our minds and keeping our sense of humor? In podcast #114, mom-in-chief Ellie Knaus interviews psychotherapist and favorite relative EMILY PRICE about how to handle big change and all the anxiety that comes along with it. Emily gives us grounding techniques that can keep us from freaking out no matter what life throws at us: whether that be an unexpected pregnancy (or expected), moving, switching jobs, or family loss. We also call B.S. on our “get over it” culture and share what to do instead. But first Ellie brings on her husband Adam to share their ridiculous Sunday night…You’ll never think of “mother-daughter twinning” in quite the same way. PS We're both pregnant.

GUEST BIO:

Emily Price is a licensed clinical social worker and mom of 2 boys (now 3 boys!) living and working in New York City. She’s been extensively trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and is a certified somatic experiencing practitioner. She is a psychotherapist in private practice and specializes in treating anxiety and trauma, particularly OCD, phobias, and PTSD.

The Disney Princess Craze | Humorist Devorah Blachor
00:35:25

#150: What's a feminist mom to do? In our 150th podcast, humorist Devorah Blachor lifts the veil on all things glittery and pink as we find out why our daughters are more princess-obsessed than ever. We talk about her brand new book THE FEMINIST'S GUIDE TO RAISING A LITTLE PRINCESS: HOW TO RAISE A GIRL WHO’S AUTHENTIC, JOYFUL, AND FEARLESS–EVEN IF SHE REFUSES TO WEAR ANYTHING BUT A PINK TUTU (TarcherPerigree). And, of course, because you're listening to Atomic Moms, we also speak candidly about depression, being your children's ally, and the time Sabrina tried to open mouth kiss me because she saw Prince Eric and Ariel do it in the book. xx Ellie Knaus, host

Organized Chaos with Claire Coffee
00:57:54

#149 Get out the wine and the last of the Halloween candy! I’ve been leaning heavy on the experts as of late, and it was about damn time we had an unfiltered mom podcast full of laughter, commiseration, and perfectionism undone. TV star Claire Coffee played Adalind on NBC’s supernatural show GRIMM for six seasons. She, along with her musician husband Chris Thile (Yo Yo Ma told him where to get the engagement ring), and their son 2.5 year-old Calvin, rocked out at our home between A Prairie Home Companion with Chris Thile west coast shows. We talk about the struggle between being creatively fulfilled and getting Mom sh*t done, mama separation anxiety, traveling the world with a toddler, and how parenting is SO DIFFERENT with Ellie’s second child. We love to play into the ridiculousness of our wacky family life with our creative husbands, and jokingly give ourselves and each other a hard time in this episode, but I’d be remiss not to say Claire Coffee is one of the most generous and thoughtful women on this planet and a huge reason this podcast exists. We all need a mom friend who commiserates but doesn’t accept any self-defeating excuses and sends tubs of ice cream when you’re on bed rest. xx Ellie Knaus

#148 In this no holds barred Atomic Moms parenting podcast, award-winning business and personal finance journalist Emma Johnson talks cents to Ellie Knaus about what money means in our relationships, where we should focus our savings, what holds us back from going big in our careers, and why we owe it to our kids to go for it! Ellie speaks honestly about her money-making hang ups. And Johnson, a champion for solo moms everywhere, alleviates listener working mom guilt, shares how she carves out guilt free me-time, and discusses the “the sandwich generation” stress when you find yourself suddenly the primary caregiver of both your kids and your parents.

Finally we share a fantastic "Family Manifesto" exercise pulled straight from her new book The Kickass Single Mom: Be Financially Independent, Discover Your Sexiest Self, and Raise Fabulous, Happy Children to do with your family this week. x Ellie

Celebrating Rainbow Babies | Pregnancy After Loss
00:51:42

Dr. Jessica Zucker is back on Atomic Moms. As a Los Angeles-based psychologist and writer specializing in women's reproductive and maternal mental health, Dr. Zucker is a leading voice in miscarriage and pregnancy loss awareness. When her @ihadamiscarriage Instagram account was named “the bravest use of social media” by Women’s Health Magazine U.K., she shared, "My personal experience was a way to model for other women around the world that there is absolutely no shame in loss." We discuss her own experience as a rainbow mother and offer guidance to a listener struggling with prenatal anxiety after loss. "... the guilt, sadness and fear caused by what happened last time are stopping me from truly enjoying this new pregnancy, from connecting to my baby and being fully present. What is your advice to new parents who are preparing for the arrival of a new baby while dealing with so many fears and feelings?”

But first, a remarkable mother of two shares her own journey with grief after the termination of a much wanted pregnancy and the unexpected way she found help to emotionally heal. She's definitely my mom hero of the week. This episode is for all mothers and a testament to the strength and openheartedness of our listener community. And we stand in solidarity with these women.

Swimming| Safety & Overcoming Fear!
01:14:44

A brand new podcast update from Ellie, including instructions for our baby naming contest, the insane LA LA Land things Ellie is doing in an attempt to flip her baby around from "sunny side up", and listener notes on last week's podcast "The Baby Waiting Game".

Then we highlight this episode from February 2017 that could save your child’s life. I can’t wait for you to meet guest SELENA WILLOWS, a mom of two, a nutrition and wellness coach as well as the child swim instructor who taught my toddler to swim safely across a pool in less than two weeks! We’ll talk with Selena about water safety (like the chilling fact that it takes less than 20 seconds for a child to stop fighting for breath), the spiritual experience of witnessing a child push past their fears and perceived limitations, as well as how she coaches. “Swimming is one of those things that children can learn very quickly if people get out of their way,” Selena says. “I often say I don’t so much teach as I facilitate. I provide a safe environment where kids are empowered and they get to learn how to swim — they get to teach themselves how to swim. I guide them, but I do very little instruction.”

We also go WAY BEYOND swim lessons into Selena’s mantra to “live life on purpose” and her own transformative experience of LOSING 100 pounds. And Selena will offer a “breakthrough homework assignment” for us moms to achieve greater clarity about getting to the root of shame and how it affects us physically inside and out.

Baby Waiting Game | Ellie Knaus + Adam Sztykiel
00:44:57

We could meet this baby any moment folks! My modified bed rest restrictions have been lifted and she’s welcome to join us anytime. The acid reflux situation is real (as you’ll hear in my voice on the show) and so is nesting at our new home. Literally. You will not believe what is oozing out of our walls. I’m serious.

In this relaxed and fun episode, I grill my birth partner about whether he’s ready to be my pushing wingman again. And I ask him what he plans to do differently in raising Baby Girl #2. You’ll also hear one of our biggest motivating factors in life. Believe me, it’s one not many people would fess up to.

We also get into an honest debate over what it means to share on social media. For example, should a mom not announce in a Facebook or Instagram caption if she had an unmedicated birth because another mom could feel bad? And why would a mom want share that information anyways? We hit all sides of the argument.

Sending love in these final days (?) hours (?) minutes (?) before we meet Sabrina’s sister. If I happen to not be here next week because I'm filling a gigantic pad with witch hazel, definitely check out one of the amazing experts I've had on the show in the past month! xx Ellie

With hundreds of thousands of RenegadeMothering.com readers, writer/blogger and mother of 4, JANNELLE HANCHETT is a force of nature, fearless in her authentic viewpoint, her hilarious trucker mouth, and deep-rooted connection to what matters in life. Her writing has been featured in Brain, Child, Unworthy, and Scary Mommy, among others. For those of you in search of your own mom squad, we talk to Janelle about her viral blog: “The No-Bullshit, No-Drama Friendship Manifesto”, the unspoken understanding between best mom friends, and how to cultivate it. We also share why neither of us has chosen a definitive parenting style (or parenting team) and how whenever we think we’ve figured out something as a parent or take parenting credit (lets say for our kid sleeping well, or our pregnancy going smoothly), we end up having to make adjustments or swallow humble pie with the next kid. Most importantly, Janelle opens up about her struggle as a young alcoholic mother as revealed in her essay, “We Don’t Start with Needles in our Arms”. If you know anyone touched by addiction - and honestly, who hasn’t been? - I urge you to hear what she shares on this podcast. love, Ellie Knaus Please subscribe on iTunes.com/AtomicMoms Please share this podcast with mom friends and with your online mom groups! Need a mama recharge? Jennifer Waldburger’s voice is so soothing in this “mama and baby meditation" it'll work wonders for you with or without baby. WELL…this short meditation for moms with young children and babies will help us reconnect with our children and ourselves and regain our serenity (or at least some of our sanity). It’s helping me tremendously and I’m not even doing it with a baby. I just visualize Sabrina at preschool or the little one rocking out in my tummy. xx Ellie P.S. Get excited! How to Get Your Kids to Sleep | Jennifer Waldburger
00:41:29
Infant, co-sleeper, toddler, and preschooler moms! World renowned parenting expert Jennifer Waldburger (sleepyplanet.com) shares decades of expertise helping families get their zzz's and regain their sanity. With her gentle and compassionate approach, practical advice, and no judgment attitude, Jen helps us debunk sleep training myths and answers all my questions when it comes to ages 0-5. Atomic Moms listeners still thank us for our first “sleep learning” podcast conversation with Jen two years ago so we figured it was about time for an update! In #131, we debunk mega sleep training myths and get important answers. Where should newborns sleep? What’s the deal with that new American Academy of Pediatrics first year room sharing recommendation? What's the biggest mistake you can make in the first few months? Why the 4 month sleep regression? How can families transition out of co-sleeping with older children? When should you ditch the crib if they’re not climbing out of it? How do you convince a toddler to stay in his own bed? Are toddler beds worth the cost? And how do you juggle a new baby and an older sibling when it comes to bedtime? As always, we cover a lot of ground! Daddy's Home | Joe Ballarini, Writer, Director, Funny Dad
00:49:17
Funny work-from-home dads and best friends Joe Ballarini and Adam Sztykiel (my husband) riff on how fatherhood has changed them, how much us moms scare them, and how they’d man-handle the apocalypse (God help us all!). We share Sabrina’s latest antics (!!!), the dads’ opposing views on “maternal gatekeeping”, marriage after kids, Joe's epic Dad-urdays with his adorable, half British baby Theo, and what they hope to remember most about these intense early years of parenting. We also talk about the inception of Joe's brand new middle grade novel series, A BABYSITTER’S GUIDE TO MONSTER HUNTING (published by fancy pants Harper Collins), the first of which will be released this June. Expect to see it in theaters as well, as Montecito Picture Company and Walden Films are producing Ballarini's film adaptation. I’m so proud to report that it has fantastically written, funny, and super empowered female leads (#girlpower!), and I cannot wait for Sabrina to be old enough to read it. How to Get Organized and Get It Done Fast!
00:47:08
Buh bye clutter! Robyn Reynolds swears we can organize ANYTHING that's worth keeping. This single mom with a can-do spirit and no-nonsense attitude whips Ellie's haphazard "put away" habits into shape. She teaches us how to streamline our kitchen in order to turn our morning routines into a well-caffeinated machine. She walks us through the process of getting our closets under control (and saving money in the process!), and gives an excellent mom hack for how the heck to keep track of what-you-put-where in all those darn diaper bag pockets. In this podcast, you'll also laugh at what a rainy day means at Robyn's L.A. home and how to keep your cool with home maintenance issues, like when the 1-800 customer service for your broken washing machine is leaving you high and dry. Bravo TV, are you listening? Cause Atomic Moms is pretty sure that Robyn Reynolds, Long Island's answer to Marie Kondo, needs her own show! As an adult, Robyn continued to hone her skills as a fashion merchandiser and a personal assistant. After a short-lived career as an actress, Robyn found herself at a professional crossroad. She decided to take a leap of faith and follow her lifelong dream of creating an environment where organizing was her focus and Organize2Harmonize was born. As a long-time member of NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers), a Certified Professional Organizer and a Golden Circle Member, Robyn has steadily grown her business into a recognized and trusted name in the organization industry. Ch-Ch-Changes! Ellie & Adam on Moving, Bed Rest, & Third Trimester
00:25:14
In this madcap family huddle, comedy screenwriter Adam Sztykiel (aka “Sabrina’s favorite”) and host Ellie Knaus catch a breath from packing up the house and make light of the insanity that seems to be knocking on their door. Ellie replays a couple Friday nights ago when she suspected another woman of checking out her husband. (And it wasn't weird at all that Ellie wasn't wearing panties at the time.) Adam, who swears he just has a really high tolerance before feeling things, shares other recent events that made “water come out of my face." And the couple kicks off Ellie’s third trimester before rushing back into the house to help the handyman dismantle their lives for an upcoming move. The 'Good Enough' Mama | Erin Williams, Illustrator, Cancer Research Specialist, Writer
00:33:05
Mama identity crisis? Join the club. After stepping into the all-consuming role of mom, how the heck do we reclaim our sense of self outside of motherhood? Writer, illustrator, and cancer research specialist ERIN WILLIAMS shares the deeply personal solutions that are working for her, especially how she's embracing 'good enough' when it comes to being mom. In addition to writing raw, complex personal essays, and conveying the messiness of motherhood in her artwork, and caring for her two year-old Lucy, Erin Williams is an oncology research specialist. And while that admirable job title would make a lot of us need a drink (or 3), Erin shares what it’s like being a sober mom and having to learn to cope with feeling everything. Sensitive mamas out there, this one is especially for you. And if you listened to last week’s episode with Jordan Reid, Erin’s co-author of "The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People” (Penguin Random House), you WILL NOT BELIEVE Erin’s side of their ‘meet-cute’ friend story. As much as I want to spill the beans, you’ll have to hear it from her. Mother of Reinvention | Jordan Reid, Ramshackle Glam
00:31:30
Jordan Reid hustles like a mother-lover: raising two young children, writing books, and running the uber popular RamShackleglam.com, where she shares funny parenting moments, DIY videos, and refreshingly honest details about her family life. But before all that cool stuff started, Jordan endured what Ellie would describe as a Joseph Campbell-esque “dark night of the soul” or what Jordan calls a “truly spectacular career implosion!” (HINT: you’ll never ever look at one particular insanely popular tv show the same way ever again). From that experience, she discovered the magic of reinvention and promises us, “If you put in the work, and you do the things you say you’re gonna do, your past experiences all make sense.” Of course, transitions are a b*tch, and her life as an accomplished author and popular website founder isn’t always an Instagram-worthy bed of roses. (Isn’t it a GD relief to hear that?!) Jordan gives us a heart-to-heart about the negative online commenters she’s had to handle in the past and tips for how to rise above the haters (real or imagined). We also laugh about her brand new book “The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People”, co-authored by her gal pal Erin Williams, and published by Penguin Random House. If you overhear me giggling in my OBGYN waiting room, it’s cause I’m doing the book’s “Bad Baby Names” word search. xx Ellie Knaus atomicmoms.com Subscribe and write a review on iTunes.com/AtomicMoms so new moms can find us! For the first time publicly, Helen opens up about her moment-to-moment decision making when she was diagnosed with stage 3, triple negative breast cancer while pregnant with her second child. They moved to LA when said soul mate-now husband received an offer to open a restaurant in Hollywood. They had their daughter Luna, and soon after, she was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after finding out she was pregnant with her son. "Motherhood in Hollywood" | Heather Brooker
00:45:59
Emmy award-winning journalist turned actress/comedian/host Heather Brooker chats with fellow parenting podcast host Ellie Knaus about everything under the L.A. sun. Join us as we laugh about the recent moment Heather's family video went Youtube viral, and go international with us as we discuss how Heather’s recent family trip to London took a shocking turn when she found her family in the midst of the Parliament attack (she gave live news coverage to US stations while her daughter played in a nearby park). Ellie shares the recent loss of their family pet, how she shared the news with Sabrina, and the sweetest (and perhaps most bizarre) FaceTime exchange in iPhone history. Because we're talking "Motherhood in Hollywood", we also have a playful social media tug-of-war over the fine line between not wanting to project a falsely perfect family image while also not sharing our dirty laundry or our children’s meltdowns. And of course, we have to ask Heather: what’s the biggest misconception about motherhood in Hollywood? x Ellie Knaus, Atomic Moms mom-in-chief Guest Bio: Heather is an actress, comedian, Emmy Award-winning Journalist, and host of the Motherhood in Hollywood podcast (available on iTunes!). "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids" | Jancee Dunn, Bestselling Author
00:57:00
Relationship tips + hilarious parenting stories. Podcast #122: New York Times best-selling author Jancee Dunn and host Ellie Knaus share the ins and outs of their relationships and compare funny notes on the home front. Dunn's new book, "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids," (Little, Brown and Company) is described as "part memoir of discovery, part parenting and marriage how-to, and part intriguing exploration of science that explains why we behave the way we do." We laugh about what frustrates us most about our partners in Newbornland. For example, I remember in my sleep-deprived haze telling Adam he was not allowed to sit in the driveway with his phone after work and that if he wanted to go to the bathroom right when he got home then he should use the one at the office!... (Sorry, Adam. Can't wait to be back in the thick of it with baby #2 this July!) Jancee shares communication skills she learned from an FBI hostage negotiator (for her husband, but I swear it applies to toddlers as well), and we discuss the traps of "maternal gatekeeping". If you find yourself losing your cool with your partner in front of your child, Jancee offers a powerful suggestion for calming your temper. And if you're struggling to make Quality Family Time (Q.F.T.) in this crazy age of kids sports and non-stop birthday parties, Jancee offers the guilt-free, sure-fire way to get off the hook! Yes, buckle up. We cover a lot of ground! xx Ellie Guest Bio: New York Times bestselling author Jancee Dunn is the author of five books, including "But Enough About Me", a memoir of her rock and roll years, (HarperCollins, 2008) and an essay collection, "Why Is My Mother Getting A Tattoo? And Other Questions I Wish I Never Had To Answer", a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor (Ballantine, 2009). In 2012, with Cyndi Lauper, she cowrote "Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir". Her first book for children, "I’m Afraid Your Teddy Has Been Naughty Today", will be published in 2017 by Candlewick Press. She was a staff writer at Rolling Stone for over a decade, and a veejay at MTV for five years. She writes for many publications, among them the New York Times, Vogue, Food & Wine, and Parents, and was a columnist for GQ and O, The Oprah Magazine. We also address the Do’s and Don’ts of meeting the newborn. Sleep-deprived and always candid, brand new second time mom Bridget enlightens Becca and Ellie as to their future of juggling young children and infants (like, who do you address first when they both want something at the same time?…how about when the older one takes the new transition out on the dog?…does motherhood foster or destroy creativity?...and last but not least, do peepee teepees actually work?). Family Huddle | Ellie Knaus and Adam Sztykiel
00:39:59
We're celebrating the midpoint of my second pregnancy! 20 weeks down. 20 weeks to go. I sit down with Adam Sztykiel (comedy screenwriter/ sitcom show runner/ husband of almost 10 years) to catch up on all the ridiculousness happening at Chez Sztykiel. I find out what it's like living with a pregnant zombie (me) who has suddenly revived herself with an intense second trimester "nesting” frenzy. Our toddler correspondent, Sabrina, makes her Atomic Moms debut to reveal the gender of our baby! And throughout the episode, she pops in to share her thoughts on having a sibling, what’s hot in entertainment news (on Nick Jr), and to belt out "Moana". She’s pushing hard for her own spin-off podcast (N-O) or a spot on Ellen (not gonna happen). We also answer listener questions about the ways in which our first child is like us and totally different from us, how Adam measures up to his own manly-man father, and the most exciting purchase Ellie has made this year (yes, folks, it’s a label maker). Take a Deep Dive with Selena Willows
01:03:08
This episode could save your child's life. I provide a safe environment where kids are empowered and they get to learn how to swim -- they get to teach themselves how to swim. I guide them, but I do very little instruction.” We also go WAY BEYOND swim lessons into Selena’s mantra to “live life on purpose” and her own transformative experience of LOSING 100 pounds. And Selena will offer a “breakthrough homework assignment” for us moms to achieve greater clarity about getting to the root of shame and how it affects us physically inside and out. P.S. Here's hoping I kick this preschool cold by the time Sabrina is in college. Jeez Louise. 00:56:31
But first Ellie brings on her husband Adam to share their ridiculous Sunday night...You’ll never think of “mother-daughter twinning” in quite the same way. GUEST BIO: Emily Price is a licensed clinical social worker and mom of 2 boys (#3 coming in March) living and working in New York City. She’s been extensively trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and is a certified somatic experiencing practitioner. We're Expecting!
00:39:59
We're having a baby! Host Ellie Knaus (first trimester) consults best mom-friends Becca McHugh (second trimester) and Bridget Moloney-Sinclair (third trimester) about the ups and downs of pregnancy while toddler-wrangling at the same time. We discuss: expanding our families, “second child-itus” (it’s like my stomach was an instant pop-up tent this time), the “mini van stigma”, VBACS, IUI’s, and a bunch of other initials I knew nothing about before motherhood, and how our toddlers pressured us into making them siblings (Sabrina has convinced me that I'm the surrogate for “HER baby”). We hear Becca’s insane ZIKA-conception story, kiss goodbye to any illusions of a cocooned “4th trimester” with the newborn, and share how Sabrina broke the news to her entire preschool. After listening to this episode, our child-free sound engineer Owen O'Neill wrote Ellie: "Well, that episode was an eye opener to say the least." Spotlight on ADAM SZTYKIEL (Ellie’s decade-long starter husband, film/television comedy screenwriter, Sabrina’s favorite). We look back on 2016 and the biggest parenting lesson Sabrina has dished up for us thus far. We brace ourselves for the tornado of wrapping paper and fun as we head to the in-laws for the holidays. Plus, we re-live a humiliating moment from Ellie’s pregnancy and decide it’s time to clear out Adam's custom mug collection from his comedy writer friends, like the one that says "Tea Bag Me", now that Sabrina is curious about reading. Mama Glow Latham Thomas on Mothering Ourselves First
01:01:56
Named one of Oprah's Super Soul 100 visionaries and "Top 100 Women to Watch in Wellness" by Mind Body Green, LATHAM THOMAS is one hardworking single mama on our side. Maternity/lifestyle maven and NYC birth doula, Latham schools ELLIE KNAUS and our listeners on her philosophy of “mothering yourself first”, saying no to make room for yes, and slowing down this winter by tuning into the rhythms of nature (when it's dark at 4 pm, it's fancy pajama time!). Latham tells Ellie about her vision of radical self-care, an act that is radical at least in part because “nobody cares that you want to read a book or lay in bed or sleep in...." Nobody until now! Finally, we are recognizing for ourselves the absolute necessity of self-care in order to show up wholeheartedly for our loved ones. Latham offers advice on re-charging ourselves at least as often as our iPhones, letting go of our polarizing motherhood archetypes, and answers our "second round of childbirth" fears. She also gives Ellie marching orders for how to get her Mama Glow on in the kitchen (hint: it involves this fantastic Atomic Moms community) and you won’t want to miss her recommendation for a ritual each of us can start tonight to strengthen our relationship with our children and to prevent ourselves from getting “off-mission.” This episode is brought to you by Seedling.com, code: ATOMIC Mama Glow: mamaglow.com Latham Thomas’s Instagram: @glowmaven Atomic Moms Instagram: @atomicmoms AtomicMoms.com "Mama Glow : A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy" by Latham Thomas

Dr. Laura Berman on Elevating Our Relationships
00:53:04
You’ve seen her as a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Dr. Oz Show, and The Steve Harvey Show. Our esteemed guest Dr. Laura Berman (New York Times bestselling author, world renowned sex and relationship educator, and clinical professor of ob-gyn and psychiatry at Northwestern University) is here to help us mamas elevate our relationships with the ultimate “Jedi Mind Trick.” She swears that mastering our energy is the key to living an empowered and loving life. We = atoms. Atoms = energy. And let’s face it, most of us go about our lives unconsciously playing off each other’s energy, for better or worse. In this podcast, Dr. Laura Berman shares with host Ellie Knaus and guest co-host Bridget Moloney-Sinclair findings from her latest book, “Quantum Love: Use Your Body’s Atomic Energy to Create the Relationship You Desire.” She schools us in how we can cultivate feelings of optimism, hopefulness, and curiosity, and act from an empowered and truthful place as "a co-creator of our reality". She swears it's possible to hold onto our positive energetic state (good vibes) regardless of the cranky downers we have to interact with. And you’ll be blown away by the life-changing events that led Dr. Berman to developing this book (it was 'another freak and growth experience’ (AFGE) after another). Mom Date | Actress Nikki DeLoach
01:02:35
Nikki DeLoach’s life journey has taken her from a farm in Georgia to her most recent starring role in the new Hallmark Channel movie “A Dream of Christmas,” with plenty of WILD (!) stops along the way. Nikki sat down for a mom-date over a gift of Coor’s Light and homemade “Georgia caviar” to chat about everything from her early years in the Mickey Mouse Club (with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Britney Spears) to how she worked her way out of the grips of deep postpartum depression while starring on the MTV acclaimed series "Awkward". Nikki and Ellie talk about their fast-track playground friendship, how Nikki’s son Hudson is Sabrina’s male counterpart (or, “spirited,” as we like to say), and the healing journey Nikki took with her own mother. Nikki also shares the great awakening she sees happening among fellow women: “I’ve seen us all go on this journey together where we’re like, ‘We are powerful and we are strong and we are leaders but also, we are nurturers and we are lovers and messy, you know, like super messy.’” And although you know we’re Switzerland here at Atomic Moms, we dip our toes into the presidential election and what it means to and for us. This is one mom date you do not want to miss. (P.S. the Southern mamas let the S word out in this one so listen without the littles.) Adoption Illuminated | Angie Sanders
00:53:30
In honor of National Adoption Awareness Month we’re diving deep with an astonishing, candid conversation with Angie Sanders, a former casting director and now-adoptive mother who opens up about her own tumultuous road to motherhood, transracial adoption, and how it felt to be on the other side of the casting equation, which Angie says is a bit “like jumping through hoops that are lit on fire.” Angie, mother to 6-year-old Mason, answers the biggies anybody who has thought about adoption might have wondered: adoption matching, navigating the post-adoption birth-mother relationship, and Angie’s definition of deep self-care. You’ll also hear from Atomic Moms listener and mother-of-two Melanie, herself an adoptee, on how she navigates the pitfalls and silent biases of race as the wonderful mother to her adopted black daughter and biological white son. 00:33:09
Oprah says of our guest Martha Beck: "She's one of the smartest women I know." In podcast #93 Martha Beck encourages host Ellie Knaus to get honest in every aspect of her life with an INTEGRITY CLEANSE. Of course, Ellie freaks out that everyone will abandon her. Could YOU do it? Wouldn't it be liberating to stop "dancing on eggshells"? We also discuss: the truth about pain, how to handle self-criticism, challenging the voices in our head, what our bodies are really trying to tell us, and how to be compassionate towards ourselves when we're mad at ourselves for how we're being so hard on ourselves (a double whammy and Ellie's longtime favorite conundrum until Martha solves it for us here. Huzzah!) Martha's bestselling books include: Expecting Adam, Finding Your Own North Star, Steering By Starlight, and Finding Your Way in a Wild New World, and we discuss her new work of fiction: Diana, Herself: An Allegory in Awakening. Things I Wish My Mother Had Told Me | Margaux Bergen
00:38:04
Sometimes our own parents aren't equipped to teach us how to create a meaningful life. It's our job to figure it out for ourselves and pass it on. MARGAUX BERGEN, an observant and whip smart daughter of a dysfunctional family, wrote down some of her hard earned wisdom to give to her eldest daughter when she went to college. Penguin Press has published these family stories and raw insights in the hybrid memoir/advice book: “Navigating Life: Things I Wish My Mother Had Told Me.” A champion for women leadership around the world, Margaux Bergen has worked with the non-profit Vital Voices. She has held senior communications positions at The Center for Interfaith Action on Global Poverty, The United Way and the World Bank, and is now with the women-led, conscious journalism site ORBMedia. On Atomic Moms we talk about respectful parenting, the dreaded resume gap, solitude vs. loneliness, and how we can veer away from our dysfunctional family history and find our way back to our essential self. xx Ellie Knaus Subscribe on iTunes.com/AtomicMoms. Cheers to Complicated Families | Tracy Barone 'Happy Family'
00:33:32
We're raising a glass to complicated families. *Clink* In episode #91, guest Tracy Barone chats with Ellie Knaus about the fractured mythology of our own family of origin. For example, do we ever really know our parents? What are they not telling us and how has it subconsciously informed who we are? A mother of reinvention (playwright, film producer, now novelist), Barone also opens up about the identity crisis that plagues so many moms taking a break from the work force and what she learned about herself in the process. We talk about the Buddhist concept of the child choosing the parent before birth. (We'd love to know: why do you think your kid picked you?) And for all you creative mamas out there, we pinpoint what it takes to birth your passion project. Parenting Courageously | Maria Toorpakai "A Different Kind of Daughter: The Girl Who Hid from the Taliban in Plain Sight"
00:33:16
Not even Taliban death threats could stop our guest Maria Toorpakai from fulfilling her destiny. Growing up in the conservative region of Waziristan where women have zero rights, Maria Toorpakai, age 4, burned all her dresses. Maria's father and brothers helped hide her female identity so she could play sports and roam freely as a boy. Now an internationally ranked squash player, Maria Toorpakai uses her platform to advocate women's rights. In her new memoir, "A Different Kind of Daughter: The Girl Who Hid from the Taliban in Plain Sight," Toorpakai shares, "Courage in Pakistan is often a fatal virtue." Still her courageous parents defied societal expectations and encouraged each of their children to live authentically, even if that meant putting their lives at risk. And Maria's mother, a school principal, continues to travel to dangerous territories in order to build schools for girls.
