Episode 308: Lick of the Month: Roy Hargrove on But Not For Me
17:08
This week, we take a look at an entire chorus of Roy Hargrove's solo on But Not For Me! We very rarely present this much material in our Lick of the Month episode, but this is an exception due to the absolutely incredible material Roy plays on the first chorus of his solo. This is a great lesson in rhythmic variety, harmonic language, and several bebop devices that all combine to make this 32 bars something we could gain a lot from. Enjoy the episode! July has five Fridays, so I figured this month we would try something a little bit different! I asked some of the Patreon members for questions they would like answered in a Q&A format. We got two great ones from Kris and Barb and this episode will be me doing my best to answer those questions in a concise manner. These two topics may very well turn into full blown series, but for now, enjoy this episode attempting to answer questions about how to swing and how to begin approaching non-diatonic playing. Thanks for listening!

What do we do as improvisers to make the transition from one key to another as seamless as possible? That is what we will be discussing in this episode and for the rest of the month. Episode 246: Tune of the Month: Donna Lee
15:30
Welcome to another Tune of the Month episode! This month we are finishing up our series on the playing of the legendary Charlie Parker by writing an etude over one of his most well known tunes. I strove to use the concepts from the previous three episodes this month in my writing and I think you will find a nice mix of the things we have talked about and explored. The challenge for this etude is to practice it enough to be able to be play at quite a fast tempo, as Bird would have. Good luck and have fun! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Welcome back to our third installment of episodes on the great Charlie Parker and how you can sound more like a bebop master! This week we are looking at the varied and amazing rhythmic phrasing that Bird uses to keep you on the edge of your seat. Through a combination of eighth notes, triplets, and sixteenth notes, we can learn how to form our own phrases with the same fantastic rhythmic sense and variety of Parker. 15:44
Welcome back to part 2 of our series on what we can learn from the great, Charlie Parker. This week we take a look at the shape of Bird's lines and how his combinations of horizontal and vertical playing lead to some very exciting sounds. The explosiveness these elements produce is unparalleled and if we can even get a little bit of this into our playing it will really pay off. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to do the homework! Episode 243: The Artistry of Charlie Parker Part1
16:50
Welcome back! I wanted to try some new things this year and in the month of January we will take an up close look at some of the aspects of Charlie Parker's playing that makes it so unique and special. Bird was the architect of so many of the concepts we study today and his playing is just as relevant today as it was in the 1940's. We will kick this series off by looking at the way Parker connects chords and measures with half steps. There is some homework involved with this episode so make sure you get to work after listening! Happy New Year everyone! Let's kick off 2021 the right way by starting a brand new transcription project. This episode will feature a recording from 1946 by Lester Young. 'No Eyes Blues', is all about how to play an effective melodic statement. Think more about the delivery rather than the content when transcribing this tune. Episode 239: The Minor Blues Part 1
14:54
Welcome to a new month and a new series! This series was spurred by one of our listeners. They were wondering if I could do some episodes on the minor blues progression and how to handle it. This form is very common in jazz and it will pay off to dive into this set of chords more deeply. In this episode we take an overview of the changes, learn the basics, and lay some ground work for more advanced ways of reharmonizing the minor blues to come in future episodes. Enjoy! Episode 238: How To Start Composing Part 4
14:28
This week we wrap up our series on composition. In keeping with the tradition, this is a tune of the month episode but this time, instead of using a jazz standard, we use the composition that I have been writing this month for you. I'm taking the chord progression from last episode, writing my own melody over it, and providing you with an etude as well. We talk about some of the decisions I made when writing this melody based on tempo and feel, a motive, and a few other things that will hopefully benefit you in your journey to becoming a master composer. This episode will be all about writing short melodies with prompts and a few rules. This will be the first time you are faced with a blank page but don't worry, we will try to make it as easy as possible for you to write a few simple melodies. 14:07
Composition is an important part of any well rounded jazz education path. With that being said, let's figure out how to get you started down this path! One of the most intimidating parts of composing is starting at an empty page. It can stop even the most enthusiastic blossoming composers in their tracks. Episode 234: Tune of the Month: It Could Happen To You
9:44
This week's episode brings our series in October to a close. Do you feel like you gained some valuable information on learning tunes in multiple keys?? I sure hope you did. We are going to finish up the series with an etude written over, It Could Happen To You. There is a catch, however. The etude is written in the key of concert F (which is a key you should know this tune in). Your challenge is to learn the melody in concert F before you even touch the etude. Good luck and have fun! Episode 233: Why Learn Tunes In Multiple Keys?
12:35
The month of October has five Fridays, so I decided to put out an episode that was more of a discussion than a lesson. We have spent the past three episodes talking about techniques for learning and understanding tunes in multiple keys, but haven't really asked why we are doing this. This week, I wanted to just talk about the advantages both immediate and long term of learning tunes in more than one key. Turns out, there are very practical and immediately useful reasons for this, which are discussed in the episode. Hope you enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 232: Learning Tunes In Multiple Keys Part 3
12:53
This week, we continue our series on learning tunes in multiple keys. In this episode, we move on to another amazing jazz standard, How High the Moon. In a vacuum, this melody is much easier to play than Au Privave. But upon closer inspection, we realize there may be more hiding under the surface that make things a bit more difficult. We explore what to do when a melody has several key changes and how to make it easier to memorize and, ultimately, move it into other keys. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 231: Learning Tunes In Multiple Keys Part 2
13:21
This week we continue our journey to learn how to play melodies in multiple keys. Last episode, we looked at a very simple melody, Sonny Moon for Two. This week, we are diving into a much more complicated melody, Au Privave, by the great, Charlie Parker. We get down to business numbering the different notes in the tune, exploring the technical side of a task such as this. Ultimately, we are looking to use our ears at the end of the day to put this melody in different keys. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 229: Tune of the Month: Rhythm Changes
13:38
This episode culminates our work on using blues phrasing in places we may not have thought of in the past. So far we have discussed using the blues on the ii-V progression, the iii-VI-ii-V progression, and we have looked at some amazing examples of legendary musicians using these techniques. Now it's time to put all of these things together in the form of an etude and see what we get. In this etude you will notice many techniques being used side-by-side in an effort to create a complete statement. Thanks for listening and enjoy the episode! This month we dive into an extremely useful jazz scale and explore the different places it can be utilized. Melodic minor is an important sound in modern jazz and the use of it's different modes are the basis for many familiar sounds. In part 1, we will look at the pure melodic minor from the root and talk about a trio of chords we can use this over. Episode 217: Exploring Fourths Part 1
12:25
This month we are going back to a more series oriented run of shows. In July we will take a look at the interval of a fourth and how it can be used in a compelling way. We start with some basic exercises to get your ears and fingers wrapped around this sound over two very common chord symbols, the minor-seventh and the major-seventh, sharp eleventh chords. No need to do these in every key quite yet, let's keep things simple and move slowly through the learning process. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to grab the PDF! Episode 215: Vocabulary In Action
16:37
This week's episode is a natural followup to last week's and is something that is often discussed in our FB group. I also think this is one of the most essential skills to becoming a good and complete jazz musician. Vocabulary is something we all have to practice. It's a building block to being a great improviser and something we can't avoid. But how do we get that vocabulary and different sounds into our playing in a way that makes sense?? That's the million dollar question and what I try to address in this week's episode. Hope you enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 214: Interpreting Jazz Standards
18:31
This week is a long one. You'll have to bear with me while I dive into a long winded topic that requires much discussion. We are continuing our month of episodes directly answering questions from the community. This one is all about how to interpret, understand, and memorize chord progression from our favorite jazz standards. We talk about categorizing tunes into buckets that will help us to remember the progressions at the end of the day. This task becomes harder as we learn more tunes, but hopefully some of the strategies I talk about in this episode can be of use. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 213: Using b9 The Easy Way!
12:56
This week's episode is all about simplicity. When we see a flat 9 chord, our minds go to very complicated places that aren't always good. In this episode, I would like to show you an easier, clearer way to start incorporating this sound into your playing. If you're someone who struggles to use this sound and thinking about diminished dominant makes your head swim, you're in the right place. Enjoy the episode! Episode 212: Ghost Notes
11:47
This week we are talking about a very important topic that adds on to our series studying jazz articulation. Ghost notes are crucial to both making lines a bit more natural to play, adding texture, and for many instruments, making lines much easier to accomplish! I'm providing 3 examples this week and pointing out where I would naturally ghost or de-emphasize notes to make things swing much more. This is a concept that every jazz musician should master and you can consider this your jumping off point on this important element of the jazz language. Enjoy the episode! Episode 211: Tune of the Month: Yesterdays
13:32
This month, we are going to take a look at the amazing Jerome Kern standard, Yesterdays through the lens of the articulation principles we have been discussing in the past 3 episodes. We have a three chorus etude and our aim is to get a bit more adventurous as we move through the composition. One important thing to remember, is to keep the basic principles of swing in mind for the entire etude. Just because we are mixing things up a bit, doesn't mean we can ignore the basics. Enjoy the etude and remember to grab the PDF on Patreon! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 210: Jazz Articulation Part 3
11:24
This week we begin talking about the off-beat accent. This is crucial in the understanding of how to play swing music and once you start to grasp this concept, you'll hear all of your favorite musicians doing it. We move from a very obvious example, to more subtle as we move through the episode. It's important to remember that all of the other concepts we have talked about still apply, even when taking this new idea into account. Enjoy the episode! Episode 209: Jazz Articulation Part 2
12:20
This week we dive deeper into the principles of jazz articulation. Last episode, we covered some general thoughts on how to articulate in a swinging, legato manner. This week, we start to bend the rules a bit and talk about how injecting some staccato notes into our lines can be a great way to add life and character to our lines. We use these notes sparingly and in a calculated way to create the effect we are after. Enjoy the episode and let me know if you have any questions! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 208: Jazz Articulation Part 1
14:33
This week's episode begins a series on articulation and some core concepts related to this important topic. This was a listener request and something I have been meaning to do for a while. Articulation is something that can completely change the texture and feel of our lines by changing a few subtle things. Episode 207: Tune of the Month: In A Mellow Tone
13:07
This week we are taking all of the concepts we learned about the bebop scale and applying them to one of my favorite jazz standards by Duke Ellington, In A Mellow Tone. Your job this month will be to find all of the instances of the bebop scale used in this etude and see how they are incorporated into the bigger picture. I'm a fan of the chord progression here because it largely follows the circle of fourths and relies heavily on the dominant chord (a great place for the bebop scale!). Enjoy the episode! Episode 206: Bebop Scale Deep Dive Part 3
11:58
Welcome back to the third in our series on the bebop scale. This week, we start to combine the bebop scale with some other devices. Specifically, vertical playing or outlining chords. It is important to balance our vertical and horizontal playing so we don't get stuck doing things one way or another. When we study bebop scales intensely, we tend to play more horizontally. By studying this weeks episode we can avoid that trap and make sure our lines stay varied and interesting. Enjoy the episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 205: Bebop Scale Deep Dive Part 2
10:33
Welcome back to our series on the bebop scale. Last week we talked about how to form a bebop scale over the most common chord types. This week we will apply it to one of my favorite jazz standards, In A Mellow Tone by the legendary, Duke Ellington. In order to use these bebop scales we are breaking them up into 5 note segments based on each chord tone. This will allow us to gain some flexibility while still being able to rest and prepare for the next chord change. Enjoy the episode and happy practicing! Episode 201: Master Rhythm Changes Bridge Part 2
12:54
We are back with another episode on the bridge of rhythm changes. This week, we are getting a little bit more adventurous with the chord changes. The first example features a ii chord in addition to the V chord and in our second example we are going to investigate how to use a tri-tone substitution to great effect, giving us some fantastic tension and release sounds. This week brings an end to our series on melodic fragments (crying sound) and, like we always do, we are finishing this one off with a bang featuring an etude over our tune of the month. This month features Miles Davis' composition, Four. It seemed appropriate to feature this tune since there is, in fact, a melodic fragment that starts the melody. Episode 195: Melodic Fragments Part 1
14:17
This week's episode introduces us to a brand new topic that I think will help your playing tremendously. Melodic fragments are any grouping of a given number of notes to focus your melodic intent and keep you from meandering through a solo. We start the series with a 3 note fragment based on 2 different scale segments. The goal here is to develop fluency and flexibility using these over a blues so we can later get more complicated and creative. Enjoy the episode and make sure to practice the worksheet! Episode 193: Reading: Part 3
14:39
This week continues our series on reading and becoming a more well rounded musician. Remember, you will get a lot more gigs if you can read at a high level! This week brings us to syncopation. We have already done episodes on tough keys and sub-division, now it's time to take a look at one of the most important aspects of jazz: having a good handle on playing off the beat. Syncopation is a defining characteristic of jazz and we need to be able to land on each and every part of the beat. These exercises will challenge you, no doubt about that, but if you keep at it and follow through, you will see your reading skills increase tremendously through these exercises. Enjoy! Episode 191: Reading: Part 1
13:05
Happy New Year everyone! This year is going to kick off with our series on reading. We don't typically think about reading as an essential skill for improvisation, however, it is an essential skill for being a complete musician, which I think all of us strive for. Episode 189: Playing Tensions in Context Part 3
14:30
This week features yet another episode about playing tensions in context. This week we move on to the minor-seventh chord and discover some great structures we can use to work in the 9th, 11th and 13th to these chords. Hopefully, you are starting to understand what super-imposing does for your playing. This is a very powerful strategy to come up with new sounds over chords you have been playing forever. Episode 188: Playing Tensions In Context Part 2
15:03
This weeks continues our look at playing tension notes in context and also continues our look at the #11. This episode, we look at the #11 in terms of a dominant seventh chord. This provides us with some brand new opportunities to use different structures. We focus on building a triad off the flatted seventh, a minor-major arpeggio off the fifth, and a half diminished chord based off the #11. Enjoy the episode and have fun with this material! Playing Tensions in Context Part 1
12:35
This week we are going to start another month long series all about playing tensions in context. This idea came from a post in the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community FB group and thanks to Kris for bringing this topic to my attention. This week is all about using the #11 over a major seventh chord and the different structures we can use to frame this note. There are a plethora of opportunities here and I think this will benefit anyone who is starting to use more interesting notes and stretching themselves beyond just diatonic playing. Enjoy! Episode 185: Tune of the Month: Last Night on the Back Porch
15:33
This week we culminate our work for the month by looking at one of my favorite jazz tunes, Last Night on the Back Porch. This tune is simple and requires us to understand some of the most basic and important chord movements that occur so frequently in jazz. I'm hoping that the work you've done so far this month will prepare you to finally put it all together and handle this tune nicely. I have prepared our usual etude for you with some if the concepts covered and hope you enjoy this month's episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 184: Shaye Cohn’s Trumpet Masterclass
13:19
We are back with another Lick of the Month Episode! This time around, I have transcribed an entire chorus of solo for you so we can look at a complete statement instead of a lick. We are featuring the playing of the amazing New Orlean's Trumpeter, Shaye Cohn of Tuba Skinny. Her playing over Last Night on the Back porch is impeccable and will really open your ears to some cool devices. Shaye uses triplets in an extremely cool fashion along with, chromatic approaches and the clearest phrasing I have heard in quite some time. Enjoy the episode! The IV to iv Progression
13:37
This week we continue building toward our tune of the month episode by looking at a very common harmonic device used in many tunes. The IV to iv progression appears very often toward the end of progressions and we need to be able to handle this important movement as improvisers. In this episode we talk about what scale to use and give you some example phrases to highlight the important difference between the major and minor. Enjoy the episode! Episode 182: Major Chords Without a 7th
14:17
We concentrate a lot on 7ths when it comes to playing jazz. But what do we do when we see a major chord that has no 7th?? This is a tricky thing for us improvisers in certain cases. I know that I had trouble doing this before some of my teachers clarified it for me. This week we take a look at 3 different phrases and how we can adapt them to major triads or major 6th chords. This month is going to be themed and all leading toward a culmination with our tune of the month episode. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 181: Tune of the Month: Ornithology
13:55
This month's tune of the month and etude are a carry over from last week's episode where we talked about a phrase from the great Charlie Parker composition, Ornithology. In this episode, we are going to explore a very specific melodic device based on triplets and surrounding chord tones. We are using this particular set of changes because it puts us in many different keys and situations where we need to be flexible. This is a great facet of a complete musician, flexibility, and this week's episode will put us through our paces. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 180: Sourcing Vocabulary From Melodies
14:47
This week continues our wildly popular Lick of the Month Series. This month, we are taking things in a different direction. We all look toward transcriptions and recordings to get vocabulary for our own playing. This is because it's a fantastic way to study the masters and let them guide us through what sounds great over chord progressions. But have you ever used a melody that you really like to develop some vocabulary? It may be something that we all overlook as a non-traditional place to get some really cool material for our solos. This week , we take a look at Charlie Parker's Ornithology (I realize I misspoke in the episode and called it Anthropology...oops!) , borrow some of his genius, then slightly tweak it into something we can use in many situations. Episode 178: Voice Leading Exercises Part 3
14:34
This week continues our series on voice leading and doing something that many of you will find uncomfortable: SINGING! We continue to make the kines more difficult by turning our half notes into quarter notes. What you will notice, however, is the basic direction and voice leading of the line stays the same throughout. This follows logic that we perform a lot on this show, which is slowly increasing the difficulty of something until it is sounding amazing. One more episode in this series next week, then we move on to something else. Enjoy this week's podcast! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 177: Tune of the Month: I Mean You
14:13
This month we take a look at yet another Monk tune and we focus our efforts on phrasing. Phrasing is the biggest and most important factor when it comes to playing a solo that makes sense and is memorable.  Our goal with this month's episode is to get you to think about phrasing over the chord changes. We have a tendency to play these little self-contained phrases that stop right before the chord moves on. When we break this habit, so many of our limitations disappear. Enjoy this episode and remember to grab the PDF exercises and etudes! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 176: Herbie Hancock Voicings!
15:16
This week continues our lick of the month series, but in a slightly different way. Normally, we take a look at a traditional piece of vocabulary from a solo. This week, we are going to dissect some Herbie Hancock voicings and turn them into arpeggios. This will force you to play some different and wider intervals than you normally do and should open up your ears and fingers to some new possibilities. I often work in this manner when I feel like I'm stuck and playing the same things all the time. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to grab the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 174: Voice Leading Exercises
13:28
This week is all about using your natural instrument to start learning and hearing some concepts that we all need in our tool kit. You will be singing this week and for the next few episodes so get your voice tuned up and ready to go! This will eventually lead us to some great ways of coming up with our own vocabulary organically and not forcing ourselves to learn and memorize tons of vocabulary. While the former is still something we should be doing on a regular basis, some folks (like myself), aren't very good at memorizing and regurgitating. This is an alternate method that I think will be valuable for a lot of you out there. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 173: Tune of the Month: Well You Needn’t
14:41
This month we cover one of my favorite Thelonious Monk tunes, Well You Needn't. This tune is unique in many ways. It uses almost exclusively half-step motion in the chord changes which provides us a unique challenge when improvising. In this episode we talk about using motivic development yet again to gain some facility and knowledge of the chord changes. This is a great way to approach this tune when you're starting out and develop fluency before trying more complicated devices. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the PDF! Episode 172: Dexter Gordon’s Beautiful Phrase
13:17
This episode continues our Lick of the Month series utilizing a line from Dexter Gordon's solo on Three O'clock in the Morning. We talked about the melody to this tune on a previous episode, but now it's time to take a look at part of his solo and learn from it. We feature an 8 bar phrase that moves from pure melodic joy into a more bebop approach. We talk about the evolution of the phrase and how you can inject this type of thing into your own playing. Episode 171: Fast Tempo Hacks
13:14
This episode is in response to a question from one of my students, Mike. His concern was those tunes with fast tempos and dense chord changes. Something we all struggle with. This episode is all about turning those tunes into an opportunity instead of a section to be feared. By turning them into a ballad or a set of cadenzas, we can free ourselves up to try new things and develop new pathways through tunes and keys. When we look at things like this as learning tools, we suddenly change our view on them and can use tough tunes to create momentum instead of worry. Enjoy the episode! Episode 169: Stylizing A Melody Part 1
13:38
Playing the melody is an often overlooked skill. We focus so much on the solo we are about to play, that the melody becomes an afterthought. This week, we put an end to that thinking and make sure we treat the melody with the care and respect it deserves. We start our journey by transcribing the melody, and only the melody, to a great Dexter Grodon recording of the tune, Three O'clock in the Morning. Dexter is going to teach us some things (as he always does) about swing, feel, and articulation. This will ultimately rub off in our own playing and turn our melodies into things we look forward to rather than just getting through them. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? We are back with another edition of our tune of the month series! This month's episode is an extension of things we have been working on in the past couple of episodes. We are doubling down on double time (see what I did there). This episode is going to teach you how to apply the concepts we learned about in episodes 165 and 166. Episode 167: Clark Terry Schools on Rhythm Changes
15:00
It's no secret that Clark Terry is one of my all time favorite musicians. His mastery, playfulness, and feel make, for me, the total package when it comes to what makes jazz great. This week we look at a chorus of his solo from his own composition, Haig & Haig. Normally, we drill down on a specific topic or device in these lick of the month episodes but, this month, we take a look at an entire statement and figure out what makes this story that Clark is telling so compelling. Episode 166: Playing Double Time Lines Part 2
14:50
This week continues our discussion on approaching and ultimately being able to use double time lines in our playing. Last week we discussed the differences between feel and articulation when using double time, this week, we start to discuss actually applying these lines to our solos. We are searching for opportunities to utilize a short ii V I progression. There are several readily available suggestions including the tune Confirmation and also Rhythm Changes. The beginning stages of starting to incorporate 16th notes can be the most intimidating, but armed with this lesson, you should be able to start working them in seamlessly. Enjoy the episode! Episode 165: Playing Double Time Lines
15:49
This week's episode comes from a question and a topic Barb asked in the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community FB Group. Double time is an extremely advanced topic and something that many people have trouble with. In this episode, we give you a basic exercise that will start you down the path of getting your double time playing together. Just as with any concept in jazz, the most complicated facets come from humble beginnings. Enjoy the episode and make sure you grab the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 164: Editing Kris’s Bridge
21:56
In this episode, we feature another listener contribution. One of our faithful listeners and jazz super star, Kris, posted an awesome version of the bridge to Have You Met Miss Jones in our 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community Facebook group a couple of weeks ago. I asked Kris if he minded me revising this composition on the show, and he obliged. We are only changing some minor things here, but I do believe that the new version is a bit more coherent and contains better voice leading (a subject we talk about a lot on the show!) Episode 163: Tune of the Month: Solar
13:22
This month we take a look at the great jazz standard, Solar. We are trying something different this time. We are placing a pretty serious restriction on ourselves over this tune, playing in only one octave! This may be one of the most frustrating things you have ever done but it really makes you think about the material you are playing at all times. It's so easy to fall back on what we know, and that's exactly what we confront in this episode. When confining yourself to a single octave you really have to think about where you are going and not fall back on any muscle memory or lines that you play without purpose. Enjoy the episode and the etude! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Head over to our Patreon page and when you donate $3 or more a month you get this PDF and every other. Episode 162: Melissa Aldana’s Masterful Use of Intervals
13:14
Melissa Aldana is a game changing saxophonist. Her ability to have complete freedom on the horn is inspiring. This week, we bring you one chorus of the blues from Melissa that defies logic and common sense. The thing about this transcription, though, is that it might be the hippest thing I have heard in a long time. Melissa's use of intervals and rhythm is going to make you rethink the way you approach improvisation and inspire you to take the next step. Episode 161: Simplifying Complicated Chords Part 2
13:26
This week is a continuation of the important information from last week's episode. In this edition, we look at both simplifying the note choice on chords and simplifying the actual chord progression when things get difficult. The combination of these two tactics allows us to play over the most complicated and fast moving progressions with relative ease. I have seen first hand the benefits that come from this type of thinking with dozens of students over the years so make sure you get to work on this material right away! Episode 160: Simplifying Complicated Chords
13:05
This week is about limiting our note choice to provide more meaningful melodies and harmonic impact. Most of the time, if we try to fit the maximum amount of information into a given space, we will end up sounding contrived and like we are trying to fit information into a kind of improvisational clown car. This episode is all about creating statements that limit the notes we can use over a given chord. This frees up our minds to think about more than just the notes and clarifies our thinking. This will be a beneficial episode if you feel like you know WHAT to play over certain chords but can't figure out HOW to play them in an effective way. Enjoy! Episode 159: Tune of the Month: Have You Met Miss Jones
14:36
This is one of my favorite jazz standards of all time. This tune can be very intimidating due to the bridge. The topic of today's show is how to approach a tune that has a tricky section causing you to avoid it. By using a simple trick that allows you to think through difficult changes slowly, we can start to sort some of these things out in our playing. Thinking fast is essential when playing this music, but thinking slowly is also an essential part of practicing. Learning to balance the two will benefit your playing tremendously. 14:47
This week features one of my favorite Trumpet/Flugelhorn players from Bristol, UK, Gary Alesbrook. Gary plays an amazing version of Clifford Brown's Joy Spring on his Instagram page and we are using that as the basis for this episode. This one is a bit different from our usual lick of the month series. Instead of looking very closely at a lick or piece of vocabulary, we will be talking about some of the larger issues and concepts that make Gary's playing so amazing. Episode 156: SUS Chord Tricks
12:06
The inspiration for this week's show came from a student of mine that was having trouble with sus chords. She wasn't sure what to do when she saw a sus chord and what was appropriate as far as melodic devices. So, this week, I'm giving all of you the exact same material that I gave her. We investigate a couple of pentatonic scales that work very nicely over sus chords and the differences in sound between them. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 155: Tune of the Month: Confirmation
12:23
Confirmation is one of those tunes that is very scary to look at. There's a good reason for this as Confirmation is usually played at extremely fast tempos and has a ton of changes! But don't fret, we are here to simplify some of the most difficult parts and give you a way to approach them with sequences. Sequential playing is an important aspect of playing bebop and tunes like Confirmation. It does a couple of important things: Gives you good sounding material that helps you learn the texture of the changes and helps you to be less intimidated by very difficult harmony. A win-win all around. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the etude I have written for you by clicking the link below! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This week continues our lick of the month series with a great piece of vocabulary and concept from the master, John Coltrane. Triads are such a great device when it comes to improvising and in this episode, Coltrane shows us how to masterfully use triads in a very interesting way. Episode 153: Short Vocabulary
14:36
This week we are talking about something that I think will be truly revolutionary for many of you out there. Vocabulary is an essential part of learning the jazz language. The tricky part is how difficult it is and how frustration can cause you to give up on this important part of your jazz education. This is where short bits of vocabulary come in very handy. The ability to take these lines through all 12 keys without much trouble will be important for you to have fun and not give up. Have fun with this episode! Episode 152: Editing Philip’s Line
14:31
This week we take a peak at a line one of our listeners, Philip, came up with and posted in our 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community Group on Facebook. I love the fact that Philip is thinking about many of the concepts we talk about on the show and his initiative to start composing his own lines is impressive. There were a few notes I thought could be changed in this line to make it have a little bit more harmonic gravity and I decided to make an episode detailing those thoughts. Episode 151: Tune of the Month: Recorda Me
12:20
Welcome back to another tune of the month episode! This month features one of my all time favorite tunes by Joe Henderson. Recordame is a tune with multiple personalities and in this episode, we focus on the first section and a very specific sound. We are all about harmonic minor and using this sound over a minor seventh chord. First we explore the scale and it's make-up. Then, we give a couple of short phrases to get you into the sound. Ending the episode with another etude designed for you to see the new sound in action and give you some useful material to draw from in your own learning. Episode 150: Johnny Griffin’s Masterful Blues Playing
12:37
This week we feature a piece of content from one the absolute masters of the music. Johnny Griffin and Thelonious Monk had an amazing relationship and, in my opinion, Griffin did some of his best playing with Monk. This piece of vocabulary is from their recording from 1958: Monk In Action live at the Five Spot in New York. Johnny teaches us a couple of things in this excerpt. Episode 149: Chord Extensions Part 4: More Dominants!
11:15
This week's episode concludes our series on chord extensions. Last week we talked about pure and diminished dominants, this week we wrap things up with altered and augmented dominants. I hope this information has been helpful to you. I think it gives great insight into and clears up some of the confusion that can come from certain chord symbols. You'll notice that many of the extensions are used over multiple chords. The small differences are the ones that make a difference here, so make sure you study this material carefully. Enjoy! Episode 148: Chord Extensions Part 3: Dominant Seventh
13:11
This week continues with our study of chord extensions. We take a look at 2 different types of dominant seventh chords, pure dominant and dominant flat 9. The extensions for these chords differ wildly and one is far more complicated than the other. In this episode, we talk about the differences and listen to both chords both arpeggiated and voiced with all notes at the same time. This material is a must know for any aspiring improviser and this will open up your playing to some brand new sounds you may have never thought about before. Episode 147: Tune of the Month: There Will Never Be Another You
15:18
This month's tune of the month episode is a tune I have been playing and thinking a lot about lately. There Will Never Be Another You is a great jazz standard with many of the chord movements that we talk about on this show. The circle of fourths is very present in this particular composition and gives us a chance to work on many concepts relating to tension and release. This is exactly what we are doing this week when we look at a #9 to b9 resolution model. These two notes sound fantastic in tandem with one another and when they resolve is one of the most effective sounds in jazz. Episode 146: Lick of the Month: Seamus Blake Crushes the Blues
14:41
Seamus Blake is one of the best modern jazz musicians in the world. Universally respected for his approach to the music, studying Seamus' playing should be a thing that we all do on a regular basis. This week we take a look at two different pieces of vocabulary that he plays over 'Blues Up & Down,' from the Sax Summit record. Seamus shows us some great devices including a lot of chromaticism. This tune is orignally played at a blazing tempo (250+!!), but in this episode, we slow it down and break down what Seamus is doing. Enjoy the lick of the month and make sure you grab the PDF for this episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 145: Chord Extensions Part 2: Minor Seventh
12:53
This week we continue our series on chord extensions by looking at the minor seventh chord. The extensions we use on this chord happen to be 9, 11, and 13. You'll notice that they are all diatonic which makes things a little bit more simple when it comes to this chord. These extensions also form a minor triad built off the ninth, giving us a nice start on some triad pairs. This week we give you two exercises offering up some rhythmic variety to go with our harmonic material. Enjoy and have fun with this week's episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? 13:22
This week kicks off a series all about chord extensions. We had done an episode WAY back about this very topic but this series is going to feature a more in depth discussion and we are going to feature a different chord quality each week, allowing us to talk more deeply about the extensions and why they are what they are. We are kicking off the series with the major seventh chord and the extensions of 9, #11, and 13. We talk about what structure these three notes result in and give you an exercise in all 12 keys to help you with your practice. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? We are starting a new series here at the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson. It's called Tune of the Month! Every month we will be taking a look at an important jazz standard and coming up with a great exercise to get you improvising fluently over it. For our first month, we take a look at the classic standard, All The Things You Are. We talk about how the chord structure revolves around the circle of 4ths and how we can use this to our advantage with an exercise built off of chord tones and extensions. Episode 141: Linear Piano Voicings
14:19
This episode is all about playing piano voicings as single note lines. This is a great way to break out of the patterns you may be working on and start to include some great intervalic melodies that you may never have thought of.  The thing that makes piano voicings sound great is the structure of their intervals. By extracting these intervals and making them into a single note line, we harness the power of these sounds and apply them to more than just a chordal instrument. I use this tactic often when I'm feeling uninspired and looking for some less common lines in my playing. I hope you enjoy this episode and get something out of it! Episode 139: Metronome Games Part 2
12:16
This week things get A LOT harder. I mean turning things up from 0 to 100 harder. We are going to play a short etude that I prepared for you with the metronome clicking only once per measure. If that's not hard enough already, we are then going to shift that one beat per measure all around the actual bar. This is going to push you in ways that you never thought possible and I promise it will make you a better musician with a far better sense of time. Enjoy the episode and happy 2019! Episode 138: Metronome Games!
15:25
This week is all about our most important tool as musicians: the metronome. This week we are starting with some very basic material and we will progress over the next couple of episodes into more and more challenging ways of using this device. Have you ever really thought about where your time lies? I mean REALLY thought about it? Starting from this question we allow ourselves to accurately asses where we are with this important skill. This week is about the basics. Using the metronome on all four beats, on 2 & 4, and finally, switching that to 1 & 3. If we focus on doing this in both a swing and straight feel, we are well on our way to tightening up our time and feel. I want to take a moment to thank everyone out there for another fantastic year. You, the listeners, are really what keeps me making all of these episodes and your energy and enthusiasm to keep coming back for more is truly awesome. I love interacting with such passionate musicians and I'm really looking forward to the year ahead! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 137:Kenny Garret’s Ridiculous Line On I’ll Remember April
13:01
This week we take a look at a totally killing line from the great saxophonist, Kenny Garrett. This is from an amazing 1985 performance joined by the trumpet masters, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Dizzy Gillespie. See the video below for the entire performance. Kenny plays this great line over one chord and in this episode we analyze every part of this interesting, and surprisingly complicated statement that he makes. We see him play inside, outside, and everywhere in between. There are so many things we can take from this short phrase that it boggles the mind. Episode 136: Linear Playing Over Giant Steps
13:29
This week continues the theme of playing smooth lines in one direction over difficult changes. This week we step it up a notch and look at the same concept over the great John Coltrane composition, Giant Steps. Yet another harmonically dense tune that is typically played at a fast tempo. What we discover when looking at this particular tune is that it's not as difficult as we first thought to connect these chords using half step motion. In this week's PDF we are going to combine directions and use a four measure ascending pattern followed by a five measure descending pattern. This material is very important to becoming a well rounded improviser so make sure you spend some time studying these two episodes. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 135: Linear Playing Over Rhythm Changes
11:40
This week is a topic that we have touched on before but I would like to revisit it again. Learning to play long lines through dense changes is not easy and takes a lot of practice and thought. Rhythm changes are one of the best examples of chord changes that come at you quickly and can be very difficult. In this episode, we talk about playing a single direction line that weaves it's way through the changes while adapting to the harmony as it goes. This helps us to avoid playing per-programmed material that always sounds the same. Enjoy the episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 134: The Blues Scale Alternative
13:57
This week is all about something I've been sharing with my students a lot lately. We traditionally teach the blues scale or the minor pentatonic to beginning students and use them ourselves when we are searching for that traditional, 'bluesy' sound. The problem with this scale, in my opinion, is that it actually contains a lot of really horrible notes. That's why I came up with my own scale that I call, 'The Minor-Major Pentatonic.' This scale fits the chord structure of the blues in a much better way than the traditional scales we learn and does away with those sour sounding notes that deter many of us from going any further with improvisation. Tune in and hear all about it! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Head over to our Patreon page and when you donate $3 or more a month you get this PDF and every other. Episode 133: Stanley Turrentine’s Flexibility
12:46
Stanley Turrentine was truly one of the best saxophone players of our time. His ability to cross genres and even make people who weren't jazz fans perk up at the sound of his horn is nothing short of amazing. This week we are taking an 8 bar phrase from his solo on The Sunny Side Of The Street and investigating what makes it sound so good. What we find is his ability to blend very bluesy, somewhat simple, passages, straight into some burning, double time bebop material. This is something we should all strive for when it comes to variety in our playing. We don't want to be one trick ponies and we can all take a page from Turrentine's book on this one. Episode 131: The Most Famous Diminished Pattern
12:12
This week we are going to look at one of the most famous licks in history. This diminished pattern was first made famous by John Coltrane but has become ubiquitous in the jazz language. Michael Brecker was also pretty famous for taking this line and expanding upon it. In this episode we will do the same thing. First, we look at the structure of the line, then we are going to re-arrange it and make it our own. Just a word of warning that I'm going to want you to do some homework on this episode. This line is SO famous that we don't want to play it exactly as the original was played. That requires some work on your end but it will all be worth it! This week, we talk about more advanced ways to enclose our target notes. We cover double-single approaches from above and below and we end the episode with double-double approaches from above and below. 12:27
This week is all about a chord progression that you have probably seen a lot, but maybe never knew what it was called or how it functioned. The back door cadence is a kind of deceptive cadence that appears in many jazz standards. This week, we are going to discuss what it is, how it functions, and give you a couple of examples from a couple of popular jazz standards. Episode 125: The Chromatic Way
13:00
I'm very excited to let you know that we are releasing a brand new book this coming month! The Chromatic Way contains 10 chromatic etudes over some of your favorite jazz standards. Have you ever wanted to sound like your bebop heroes but just need some examples on how to do it? This book is for you! I'm a firm believer that etudes are a fantastic way to learn concepts. Seeing things in action over REAL chord progressions teach us in a way that exercises can't. That's what this book is all about and I had a blast writing it. In this episode we take a look at a small section of one of the tunes. We go over some of the devices used and give you a taste of all that you can get out of this fantastic volume of etudes. Patreon members will receive the entire etude so if you're looking for more, please go and sign up to support the podcast each and every month. Hope you enjoy this episode and keep your ears open for more on the release date and how you can get your hands on this book! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 124: Oliver Nelson’s Idea
14:21
This week is all about an exercise I found in Oliver Nelson's pattern book. Most of the time, when I'm practicing out of a pattern book, it's all about technique. This exercise, however, I was able to apply to my improvisation right away which is why I wanted to show it to you all. This is an awesome pattern that utilizes a pre-determined structure of scale patterns over minor chords. By moving this structure around over a cadence, we come up with all kinds of cool sounds that are very unique. This episode also highlights a way of taking basic information and synthesizing it in a unique way to push your own personal sound forward. Reaching the highest levels of improvisation means thinking outside of the box and turning a seemingly simple exercise into something you can use in multiple situations with multiple variables. Enjoy the episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Head over to our Patreon page and when you donate $3 or more a month you get this PDF and every other. Episode 123: Using Drones Effectively Part 2
13:20
Welcome back! Last week we talked about the psychology and benefits of using drones. I provided some basic exercises for you to get your ears, mind, and instrument in a better place. This week we continue talking about this great practice tool but, of course, we get more complicated! This episode is all about hearing and effectively using tension with drones as our vehicle. We all know that tension and release is the driving force behind music but can you really hear some of the most often used tensions in jazz? Are you comfortable with them and can you call upon a specififc sound that you hear in your head? If you can't, you're in the right place! Listen in and hear some strategies that I employ to get my playing and ears to the next level! Do you want all 12 keys of drones used in this episode? Get them HERE for only $5! Drones have been something that musicians have used for a long time to help them with just about everything that has to do with playing an instrument and playing any type of music. This week, we take a look at some effective strategies to use with a sitar-like drone and many of the things you can gain from doing this on a regular basis in your practice routine. I hope you enjoy this episode and I'm sure you'll get something out of it. Remember, if you'd like to download drones in every key, just visit our store and get your hands on this fantastic tool! Episode 121: Metronome Exercises Part 2
11:54
This week continues our journey on making the metronome the center of our focus. Last week I gave you some deceivingly simle exercises that will make a huge impact on your playing if you take them seriuosly. This week we take things a step further and really challenge ourselves to play some complicated material in perfect time with the metronome. We are looking at triplets of all kinds, sixteenth notes, and then in the final exercises, fluidly switching between them taking our time to the next level. Enjoy the episode! Episode 120: Metronome Exercises Part 1
14:09
This week is all about the metronome. I did an episode way back when that touched on working with the metronome, but this week we are getting a whole lot deeper with it. Do you ever focus your practice time on developing a deep connection with this device? If you don't, it might be a good idea to add this into the mix. Most of us think that the only requirement to having good time is to have the metronome on while we are playing. This is great, but we don't develop that deep understanding of time that is required to make us the musicians we really want to be. This are deceivingly simple exercises that will challenge you if you really try to make them perfect and not just an afterthought. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 119: Louis Armstrong Schools on Hotter Than That
13:05
This week we are talking about and studying one of the true architects of jazz as we know it. Louis Armstrong basically started it all. We are studying an excerpt from his transcription on Hotter Than That. Louis teaches us a lot in these few short bars. What can we do to make one chord sound great over a longer period of time? What do we do when we are not using a million chord substitutions and not playing bebop? All of these questions and more will be answered in this week's episode so tune in and get your PDF ready, because we are going to learn a lot this week! Episode 118: Blues In 4 Keys Part 2
12:12
This week we continue with our series about playing the blues in multiple keys at once. In this episode we change from learning a simple melody in minor thirds, to actually improvising. I have included a simple way for you to quickly wrap your own ear and the listener's ear to the new key and make it clear what we are doing. By quickly arpeggiating the first chord of the new key, we make it very clear that there is a shift happening. Remember that this material is a little bit on the advanced side of things. If you aren't ready fort this stuff, just file it away as an episode to come back to at some point. Enjoy the episode and soon you will be a monster player in any key! Episode 117: Blues In 4 Keys
15:05
This week's episode is a little bit on the advanced side of things. We are going to learn how to quickly tonisize new keys and really be on top of our game in terms of thinking on our feet. This was an exercise that one of my professors in graduate school had me do on a regular basis and it helped me out a lot. This exercise not only will help the brain but will also get you to hear things in a brand new way. By using the relationship of minor thirds we can easily transition between keys without worrying about all 12 at once. The 12 key thing will come later on, but for this week we are just worrying about 4 keys. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 116: Practice Progressions Part 3
13:09
This week we finish up our series on practice progressions with the hardest ones yet. So far in this series, we have talked about progressions that make total sense from a traditional point of view. The problem is, in modern creative music, we can't always count on the progressions to be traditional. We have to be ready for anything that's thrown our way. These two progressions aren't the most complicated but also don't follow any type of circle of fourths or fifths motion. I think this will really open up your playing. Also, this week we start throwing mp3 playalongs into the mix! Hop on over to Patreon to get your download of all the practice progressions that you can play along with! Episode 115: Practice Progressions Part 2
13:59
This week we continue our work on practice progressions. The only difference between this week and last is now we are dealing with V-I progressions instead of a mono-quality exercise. These progressions are sure to open up your playing if you spend enough time on them. Another difference between this week and last is that I want you to shoot for playing a particular sound over each V chord instead of playing a piece of prescribed vocabulary. This will force you into a different frame of mind and might open up a little bit more creativity from your playing. Enjoy the episode and have fun! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 114: Practice Progressions Part 1
15:32
This week starts a series on something that I use in my practice each and every day. These progressions are how I get ideas into my playing and functioning as I'd like them to. Whether you're learning vocabulary or trying to get a certain sound into your playing, these examples will be extremely valuable additions into your toolbox. This week we start with simple, mono-quality chord progressions that have us looking at either major, dominant, or minor chords. I have also given you a piece of vocabulary to test yourself on towards the end of the episode. I hope you enjoy this show! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 113: Charlie Parker’s Iconic Line On Confirmation
12:41
We all know that Charlie Parker is the father of modern jazz. The advancements he made in such a short life are nothing short of amazing. He changed the face of music and transcended what was possible on his instrument. Almost every legendary jazz musician attributes Bird as being one of their main influences. This warrants deep study of his music and this is what we are going to do today. There is one line on Confirmation that has always stood out to me as being a very important piece of language. The line comes on his second chorus of solo as the bridge starts. A wonderful combination of clarity and harmonic genius ensues. Enjoy today's episode and really study this line if you want to understand some of the things that make Bird so great. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 112: Traditional Versus Modern
14:19
This week we answer a question and build an episode around an email from one of our listeners, David. David wants to know the difference between getting more of a traditional sound (think NOLA style or the 1920's) and a more modern, bebop oriented sound. This was a really fun topic and we explore it using a timeless jazz standard. I have written two short segments of what I consider to be completely different styles. I think you'll gain something from this episode no matter what type of sound you're going for. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 111: Basic Bass Lines
13:08
Bass lines aren't just for bass players. Everyone should have a basic understanding on how to put together something that works and can get the job done. This week I'll give you my basic system for how to put together a clear bass line that functions. Bass players: understand that I'm not a bass player! This is simply to give someone an idea of how to play something clear and will work for many low pressure situations. In this episode, we explore the bass line system over the circle of fourths and then put it to use over a very famous jazz standard. Enjoy the episode! Episode 110: The Beautiful Simplicity Of Sonny Rollins
11:29
This week is all about making a statement in the truest sense of the word. All too often we get caught up in playing too many notes and relying on material we already have under our fingers. This is fine, but we want to remember that our music should make a statement. Sonny Rollins is the best example I can think of to break us out of this. Think what you want about Sonny's music, but you can't deny that he can truly make a memorable statement through his instrument. This week we take a look at what such a statement entails and analyze some of the things that make it great. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??
