S14 Ep3: Secrets of Nell Cropsey
706
Jim Wilcox was accused of murdering Nell Cropsey, but the evidence against him was weak and circumstantial. As Jim Wilcox sat in a jail in the town of Elizabeth City, Nell's body was released to her family. Over 200 family members awaited her arrival at the Van Pelt Manor in Brooklyn. Deep blank with heavy white curtains, the hearse traveled across the north river to the Pennsylvania Terminal. Once the hearse was at the terminal, it would await the arrival of the Southern Express to take Nell to her final resting place. Back home, back with her family.

S14 Ep2: Secrets of Nell Cropsey
682
Nell Cropsey was missing, and fingers were quickly pointed at Jim Wilcox. He was the last person to see her, so it would make sense. But things are never that clear-cut. The following day, Jim appeared in front of the Mayor, but with no solid evidence. Jim was free to go, but with a catch, he was required to see the Mayor every day at 12 until told otherwise.

S14 Ep1: Secrets of Nell Cropsey
859
There is a house in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Its Queen Anne style Frame sits on Riverside Ave near the Pasquotank river. It stands two stories high, with green and white siding and trim. This house, like so many, holds a dark history. Onlookers of the house claim to see a ghostly figure standing in front of a window of the second story. A young girl, taken before she could truly live life. A girl who has a secret.

Her name is Nell Cropsey, and the town still talks about her story to this day. But no-one truly knows what happened to Nell. The best we can do for her is to tell her story. The good, the bad, and the dark.

Joining Shane to host this season is Justin Evans from Generation Why and The Peripheral.

Lizzie Borden was an American woman tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. She died of pneumonia at age 66, just days before the death of her older sister, Emma.

The Borden murders and trial received widespread publicity throughout the United States, and along with Borden herself, they remain a topic in American popular culture to the present day. They have been depicted in numerous films, theatrical productions, literary works, and folk rhymes and are still very well-known in the Fall River area.

S12 Ep4: Unsolved Murder of Hazel Drew
363
More than a century ago, the body of 20 year old Hazel Drew was found floating in Teal's Pond near the bottom of Taborton Mountain in Sand Lake, New York. An autopsy found that she'd died of blunt head trauma to the back of her head prior to ending up in the pond. Her death was labeled a murder.

In the weeks that followed the discovery of her body, many suspects were investigated including among others: her recently widowed, and suicidal, uncle William Taylor who lived nearby; a simple-minded 17 year old farm hand named Frank Smith, who fancied Hazel and his friend Rudolph Gunderman, a charcoal peddler, the two of whom had seen her along Taborton Road, near the pond, shortly before she died; and a pair of unknown men seen by a couple driving by, about the time the murder was supposed to have taken place, at the scene - one waiting in a horse drawn runabout, and the other beating around in the bushes near the pond, as if looking for something!

What made Hazel's murder all the more mysterious, was that only a few days prior to it, she'd suddenly, and unexpectedly left her job as a domestic at the home of Professor E.R. Cary in Troy, and nobody knew what her intentions were. Also her luggage had been left - checked at the train station.

In the end, all the leads the investigators had ran out. Nobody was ever arrested or charged with the murder, and to this day - Hazel Drew's murder remains unsolved!

My dad really, really didn't really say a whole lot. He was just, I could see it in his face he was pretty stressed out, but just like me take things into. My mom is also not the type of person to basically lash out, but super understanding. So when I first brought all of this to them, she was didn't completely, fully understand the magnitude of what was actually going on.

1165
Our story begins with a man walking into a movie theater in Noblesville, Indiana – 22-year-old Brent Allred.

Brent is shy, self-effacing, and junior at nearby Ball State University. He’s meeting a woman here, or rather a girl, for the very first time. They’ve been talking for six months now, and today he’s wearing the appropriate amount of overpriced cologne, a button-down shirt, black leather shoes, and he’s holding a pair of movie tickets for the two of them that he bought in advance for this day.

**Trigger warning, this episode discusses a relationship with an underage girl**

S9 Ep6: Serial Killer H.H. Holmes
1475
I have so many questions about Holmes and we are sure you do too, so in this episode we will be answering some of them.

Let’s start with Why Did Holmes Kill Pitezel?

Holmes had written to Mrs Pitezel from prison just before she was released and the letter included the phrase [quote] we never quarreled [end quote]
Well, this is Holmes we are talking about, so it won’t come as any surprise I am sure, that what he wrote was pure fiction.

Kristie and Kahlil
1150
This is a single non-series episode.

Today’s story is one of lust, despair, illusions, and an unbridled affinity for putting up deceptive fronts. Today, we talk about Kristie Evans.

Our story begins sometime around 1974 in Roland, Oklahoma, when Kristie Dawnelle Evans was born. Born and bred in Roland, Kristie didn't know of any other world, and as a town of only a few thousand in Arkansas, Kristie grew up as a small-town girl. In high school, she met David Evans, a senior 3 years older than her. David had a flair about him... call it relaxed or call it nonchalance.

It wasn't exactly love at first sight. Naturally, they were both in different head spaces, given their age difference. But it was clear that they were interested in each other because by 1991, when Kristie was only 17 years old, she began dating David Evans.

Ann and Anthony Anastasi
1136
A seemingly happy family belonging in a Norman Rockwell painting would soon turn into a thing of nightmares… this is the story of Ann and Anthony Anastasi, it's one of jealousy, rage, and murder.

Ann Marie Anastasi was born sometime around 1973. There's not much background information on where she grew up or came from, but she was a traditional young woman who grew up in Maryland.

Anthony Anastasi was also born sometime in 1975, and while his past is still unknown too, we know he fell in love with and married Ann in Maryland.

Our story picks up right in the middle of their marriage. They had moved from Maryland to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, because Anthony was working as a volunteer youth hockey coach. By this point, Ann and Anthony had already had five kids and were already deep in the trenches of a full-fledged marriage.

High School Podcast : Murderous Soul
751
A few months ago, Shane received an email from a high school teacher in Hartwell, Georgia, named Leanne. Leanne explained that she was using true crime to teach a Freshman and Sophomore course in World Literature in a very out-of-the-box way. She was requiring her students to investigate an unsolved local case and develop a podcast episode presenting their findings.

In her email she explained she learned of Shane from his work with another high school teacher, Alex from Elizabethton, Tennessee, on the Redhead Murders case. She asked for any advice he could throw her way.

Shane responded immediately, saying he and our audio engineer would travel the 11 hours down to Hartwell, Georgia from the studio in Wabash, Indiana, to help teach her students how to create a true crime podcast.

S7 Ep3: Suffolk Strangler
1336
(Part 3) In late 2006 a small town in the East of the United Kingdom was shaken by a killing spree of 5 women, over a very short 6 week period.

Ipswich, a tranquil, historic town in the county of Suffolk in England is now a thriving tourist hotspot, with a waterfront location. The town is has many lovely bars and restaurants surrounding it’s historic docks.
Back in 2006, like most towns, Ipswich had its fair share of issues, including a thriving sex worker industry, based in the red light district in London Road.

In fact, the problem was so bad, that the London Road area of Ipswich was actually a no go zone for local residents.

David Early
1559
This is a single non-series episode.

People tend to stick with what they know. If you've been a criminal for the majority of your life, it can be difficult to envision another way of living. While it's true some former inmates do emerge from prison reformed, there are many others who are repeat offenders.

This was certainly the case with David Early. For most of his life he was incarcerated and then given second chances by parole boards who wanted to believe in the power of rehabilitation. Unfortunately, they gambled on the wrong man. After decades beyond bars, Early went on to slaughter the Knight family.

Robert Kissel
1604
This is a single non-series episode.

Nancy and Robert Kissel had a life that would exceed most people's wildest dreams. A luxury apartment in a serene setting just a stone's throw from Hong Kong. A spacious vacation home in rural Vermont. And three healthy young children, with enough money to indulge their every whim.

Yet sometimes, the most idyllic lives mask a shadowy truth. A reality check surfaced in September 2003, when the body of 40-year-old Robert Kissel was found discarded in a storage facility. Was this a crime of envy? Or something much more personal? As the world watched in fascinated horror, the truth would prove to be stranger than fiction.

Papin Sisters
1427
This is a single non-series episode.

While you may have never heard of the Papin sisters, their story may sound familiar: two domestic servants seeking revenge on their wealthy employer for the cards they’ve been dealt in life.

If you do recognize that premise, it’s probably because South Korean film director Bong Jong Ho’s Oscar-winning 2019 film Parasite was inspired by this case.

Christmas Episode 3 - Maurin Murders
1547
Longview Washington, Friday 20 December 1985, The Daily News, lead with the headline ‘Congress bogs down in battle to cut federal deficit’.

The front page was filled with stories about property tax increases, economic growth, politics and at the very bottom, a story about the Winter Solstice.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that there were no crimes from reading this, but if you delved deeper through the pages of advertising and light hearted stories there were a few hidden in there.

Page 11, the Area News section contained headlines on the latest news about the local theatre redevelopment, and the local crab fishermans decreasing catches, then tucked right near the bottom of the page ‘Ethel couple disappears’.

Christmas Episode 2 - Sodder Family
1810
For almost 40 years there stood a huge billboard on route 19 near Fayatteville, West Virginia.

It showed the images of 5 children and the following inscription
‘On Christmas Eve 1945 our home was set afire and five of our children, ages five through fourteen kidnapped. The officials blamed defective wiring although lights were still burning after the fire started.

The official report stated that the children died in the fire however no bones were found in the residue and there was no smell of burning flesh during or after the fire.

Christmas Episode 1 - Italian Hall
1548
Michigan’s Northern Peninsula was rife copper mining country. This was big business, making huge profits for the mining companies, but giving little pay and benefits to their workers. Many of the workers were immigrants, who had moved from Europe in the search of the New World and the amazing opportunities that had been promised to them if they moved to the United States.

By 1913 there were three dominate copper mines in the area, then known as Copper Country, Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, Quincy Mine and the Copper Range Company.

Ruthie McCoy
2805
This is a single non-series episode.

In the 1992 horror cult-classic film Candyman, curiosity takes a grad student places she never thought she’d find herself. Our lead, Helen Lyle, played by Virginia Madsen, is a young white woman who wanders into Chicago’s Near North Side housing projects. She is there to research an urban legend - chant ‘Candyman’ 5 times in front of a mirror and a one-armed maniac with a knife will appear.

This concept is reminiscent of the ‘Bloody Mary’ legend that terrified many of us as kids. The idea you could be alone in the safety of your own home and suddenly have a violent predator in front of you is more than a little unsettling.

Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter
2057
This is a single non-series episode.

For some people, attempts made to rise above the hand they’ve been dealt are met with success. Other people strive to better themselves and encounter notable resistance - maybe even a sense of futility.

This was the case with Rubin Carter. It seemed anytime he tried to transcend his impoverished background or society’s rampant racism he was met with yet another obstacle.

While he became a highly respected professional boxer and was once named a top middleweight contender by Ring magazine, fate had other plans in store. Events that transpired at the peak of his career would set him back so far that his reputation never recovered.

Stick around to hear about the curious case of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a man who beat the odds but was knocked out by misfortune.

The Story of Lana Clayton
1670
This is a standalone episode.

The act of taking someone’s life through poisoning has been around since Ancient Rome and Greece, when it was the preferred method of assassination. Plants like nightshade, hemlock, oleander, and snakeroot were often mixed into a target’s food or drink. These natural poisons became less useful in Medieval Europe, when antidotes were developed for many poisonous plants.

You’ll see the focal point of this case is the involvement of an atypical form of poison. While it may seem like an archaic method of inducing harm, the case we’re about to explore proves that it’s a very modern threat.

St Valentine's Day Massacre
1085
This is a standalone episode.

When seven men were gunned down in a Chicago garage in 1929, their killers thought nothing of it. After all, they had been engaged in a hostile war against each other, and the victims were merely collateral damage.

What they didn’t expect, though, was that these killings would mark the end of the powerful grip that they had over American society. With these seven murders, they managed to topple the organized crime syndicates that terrorized the country’s citizens.

This is the story of the 1929 Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Season Finale. For three years now I’ve been nailing these little red crosses into the ground. I know it doesn’t mean very much, but what the hell else am I supposed to do? Forget? Walk away with the same indifference I’ve resented in others? I know they don’t fix anything; I know they don’t make anything right. Maybe most people don’t even know what they are. In fact, I’m sure they don’t.

I could have marked the actual burial plots – but with what? I can’t put a name on them. I can’t fit my outrage on a little stone marker (what’s the character limit on those anyway?) Besides, putting a memorial in some remote corner of some equally remote cemetery, overtop of a forgotten body, is only going to result in a forgotten memorial.

The best imaginable alibi, outside of lunch with the Dalai Lama, is simply to place yourself in police custody at the time the crime is committed. If the police are with you, they know it’s not you – or so the logic goes. This is, in fact, the very thought process that stalled the prosecution of Jerry Johns for the Redhead Murders.

A class project of a different sort, led by fearless innovator (and now friend) Alex Campbell, changed this investigation yet again when he and his class of high schoolers – yes, high schoolers, worked with an FBI profiler to establish that we did in fact have a serial killer on our hands.

They also provided a name for our killer – the Bible Belt Strangler.

[Part 3] After Shane started researching the case of the Barbourville Jane Doe, and sharing this story on Foul Play, smaller newspapers around the Bible belt began reviving the story. Crime bloggers began writing about it online. Encouraged by this surge of interest, I called up a dear friend of mine who is a fellow investigator, Gemma Hoskins, and discussed some of the ways in which we might draw yet more attention to the case.

Her suggestion was simple, but it touched on something that would soon change the face of our investigation: create a Facebook page to share information.

“Lot lizards” - that’s what they call them. The kind of prostitutes who work truck stops and trailer parks. These are not the high-end rent girls of Abu Dhabi. These are blue collar, minimum wage hustlers closer to the Hollywood stereotype of the rustbelt hooker. You know the one – she has a heart of gold and a drug problem, high heels, a leopard print skirt, and probably some red lipstick and a C-section scar.

The term “Lot Lizard” was coined by a comedian in the 1970s and took off from there. Even if you take offense at the sneering attitude of this label, you have to admit it has a kind of ring to it. It might make you think of leathery old women prowling parking lots past their sexual prime and willing to do anything for a buck. More fundamentally, it evokes the image of a slimy predator lurking in the sunlight and looking to draw unsuspecting flies into its mouth.

But these women, and sometimes men, are less predator than prey.

This new series details the investigation of the Redhead Murders, including details of how Shane got involved all the way to identifying the serial killer and 3 of his Jane Doe victims. You will get an insiders look inside the mind of this serial killer, learn how easy it was in the 80s to be trafficked, and hear from a woman who was once known as a 'Lot Lizard.'

It involves murder, betrayal, prostitution, investigation, and threats. I hope by the end of the series it will help change the public's perception of people living on the fringe of society.

S8 Ep2: Unsolved Murder of Beverly Jarosz
2217
(Part 2) I’ve been receiving requests from some of you to release the three podcasts I created years ago on the 1964 unsolved murder of Beverly Jarosz. These 3 episodes were released when the podcast was still called American Crimecast. You will hear interviews from Beverly’s sister Carol along with her mother Eleanor. I am very saddened to share that Eleanor has since passed away. Beverly Jarosz was slain in her Garfield Heights, Ohio home on December 28th, 1964. An unknown person made the decision to end this 16 year old's life by strangling her with a rope, and viciously stabbing her 42 times.

On this Part 2 episode we will be speaking with an expert and discussing who we feel may have murdered Beverly.  Our #1 Suspect: Harry Joseph Madol. Several reasons and the history of Madol is revealed in this episode.  Featuring a reading of a Medium who lead us to find Madol as our primary suspect.

All seemed well in and around the community of Linden, California, in the early 1980s. Methamphetamine made its way into the life of many impressionable young people as they navigated a social life outside of High School. It's not uncommon for two best friends to enjoy hunting, but unbeknownst to the community, Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog decided they would start hunting people. Their reign of terror spanned for 15 years and their victim count is estimated conservatively at 60 people. How did the two serial killers get away with dozens of murders for so long? Why did the two evolve from hunting animals to humans? Who fell victim to their torture?

S2 Ep47: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [CIA MKUltra Document]
837
During last week’s conversation with MKUltra Survivor, we discussed briefly some of the documents the CIA released that touched slightly on their psychological testing done under MKUltra. What I am about to read to you is a redacted CIA document from 1951, two children were used in the experiment and the document explains both are young girls. Although this document does not talk about sexual testing, please be advised that what you are about to hear may be triggering if you are a survivor. This document is proof of one type of testing the CIA did on children involving being in a trance and ensuring their subjects had complete amnesia. *** TRIGGER WARNING ***

S2 Ep40: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Memories] Part 3
1942
Final Part 3 : Jean Wehner talks about how they believe Father Maskell had a black book of everyone he took advantage of, and that he was very smart in the way he manipulated people. She also discusses how he used a Polaroid camera to take pictures of his victims, which he would then use to blackmail them.

Shane, Gemma, Dr. Lacter, and Jean discuss the anger that Father Maskell may have felt after Cathy mentioned that she knew about the abuse. They also discuss the possibility that an abuser could resort to murder, and that repressed memory is a real psychological phenomenon.

S2 Ep39: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Memories] Part 2
2245
Part 2 : Dr. Ellen Lacter, Ph.D mostly understands abusers through working with victims. In her direct work with abusers, she has found that they often do not have good insight into why they abuse. Abuse is usually a last ditch attempt at psychological survival for the abuser. The survivors of sexual abuse often have a difficult time dealing with the anger they feel towards their abuser. This is because the abuser often takes on the role of a protector, which can make it hard for the survivor to see them as anything other than that.

The survivor often has to work through their own Stockholm Syndrome in order to come to terms with the abuse they endured. Jean Wehner joins Gemma, Shane, and Dr. Lacter to describe her experiences with sexual abuse at the hands of a priest, Father Maskell. They describe how Maskell would groom his victims and make them feel special, while also trying to make them believe that he was protecting them from other people finding out about the abuse.

S2 Ep38: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Memories] Part 1
2413
Shane and Gemma sit down with Ellen Lacter, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist to discuss extreme abuse and how it can impact victim-survivors and their memories. Joining us on this multiple part episode discussion is Jean Wehner, also known as Jane Doe during the mid-90s lawsuit.

Dr. Ellen Lacter is an activist against extreme abuse and a lot of therapists come to her for help, information, and guidance. She is trying to help therapists, the public, and law enforcement to understand and fight against extreme abuse. This conversation is about the different levels of abuse, with extreme abuse being the most severe.

Dr. Lacter explains that extreme abuse can include torture, networked abuse, and very calculated abuse. She also discusses how therapists can become more knowledgeable about dissociative disorders and extreme abuse. The definition of extreme abuse includes any deliberate attempt to manipulate the mind of a victim so that they do not remember what happened, or to prevent them from ever telling anyone. This might include torture, threats, or using murder victims as an example of what could happen if the victim speaks out. Ritual abuse is a type of extreme abuse that often involves satanic worship.

S2 Ep37: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Discussion of Discovery]
2094
Gemma and Shane sit down with two long time listeners who are very active in the Foul Play discussion group to discuss some new information recently learned.

Sister Cathy was a teacher at Western High School when she went missing, which is part of a complex in Baltimore City. Juliana was one of her students. The two became friends, and Juliana has agreed to share information about that day and herself, but prefers not to speak on a recording.

Gemma clarifies that Sister Cathy was no longer at Keough when she was abducted, and that contrary to popular opinion, Cathy did not wear a uniform at Western High School, though there was a dress code. In 1969, Juliana spoke to her English teacher, Cathy Cesnik, after class. Cathy mentioned that she was going shopping that evening to buy an engagement gift, and Juliana was unable to go with her.

Juliana didn't know that Cathy was missing until Sunday night on the news. She further shares what played out after Cathy disappeared and when her remains were found.

2882
Shane and Gemma explore Baltimore, specifically at the places of importance to Sister Cathy and Joyce's cases. The audio from this episode was recorded remotely along streets and in woods so be prepared for noise from passing traffic and stubborn wind.

Sharon describes the home where her father and uncle, including Billy, were raised, and notes that it is now in disrepair. She talks about the woods where sister Cathy's body was found, saying that they were much thicker when she was younger. She notes that the only people around at the time were two young boys who lived in the house next door, and some kids up the street. Billy grew up near where Cathy was found. Cathy was found almost 1000 feet or one eight of a mile from Billy's childhood home.

Many of you have been reaching out asking where you can find two episodes Gemma and I have referenced in the podcast a few times on Kelly the Box Girl. In February of 2018, Gemma and I worked together to chase a promising lead after The Keepers was released. The two episodes are really far back in the podcast’s archives so to help listeners find it we decided to release the two episodes combined for this week’s episode in our Sister Cathy series. What you are about to hear is a series of odd events that resulted in us trying to track down a box of what seemed to be very important evidence. Stick around to the very end to hear our conclusion.

S2 Ep31: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [The Hidden Predator Act of 2019]
2478
A few weeks ago we shared that House Bill 687, also known as The Hidden Predator Act of 2019, was being sponsored by CT Wilson. House Delegate Wilson’s Bill would end Maryland’s statute of limitations for civil claims against perpetrators of child sex abuse - and would also include a 2 year look-back window, a time which victims could bring claims in cases where the previous statute of limitations has expired. If you’ve seen The Keepers, you will remember Delegate Wilson speaking on his experience as a survivor and how hard it is to pass laws that the Archdiocese fights against. This week we want you to hear Delegate Wilson’s speech as well as the back and forth in Annapolis, Maryland in March at the Judicial Proceedings Committee. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused in the United States - and to this day most still have not disclosed their abuse publicly.

S2 Ep23: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Maskell's Confidential Student Secretary] Part 1
1440
Around the same time Sister Cathy went missing in 1969, Father Maskell started looking for a confidential secretary. Student Lil Hughes (Knipp) agreed to fill this position. Some episode corrections: Lil has 7 siblings, not 8. Her dad was in the service but was home for Christmas. When Lil mentioned that those who work in a private school has access to a lot of information, she would like to clarify that files are kept confidential HOWEVER she believes Fr Maskell bullied the nuns at the school and acted as though he was the person in charge. This provided him with access to private and confidential information on students.

S2 Ep22: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [1975 Maskell Abuse Reported]
1693
In last week’s interview with Sean Caine from the Archdiocese of Baltimore - one of the subjects we discussed was when abuse allegations against Father Maskell first happened. Caine says according to their documents the first accusations were in the 90s when Jean Wehner came forward during the Doe/Roe lawsuit. When asked about Charles’ statement that his mother went to the diocese when he as being abused, Caine said they have no documentation of it happening. What we know is that after Charles’ mother found out, Maskell was moved. Now we bring you the story of another who says they too reported the abuse - which resulted in Fr Maskell being removed from Archbishop Keough High School.

If you can’t get enough Dateline or 20/20 and you don’t quite trust going out alone in your own back yard because people are shady - yeah me too! S2 Ep18: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [Bombshell - The Man in the Trench Coat] Part 1
2085
Part 1: I’ve seen it before, a cold case stays unsolved until someone comes forward with information they thought was unimportant. It’s an important lesson to learn - if you know anything, no matter how insignificant and small you think it may be, it may be an important piece to the larger puzzle. We have thought for a long time that surely Cathy’s friend and roommate Sister Russell must have known of the abuse at Keough - and wondered if they ever told the police. Now - we have a first-hand eye witness account of the man in the trench coat. Join Gemma Hoskins and Shane Waters as they continue the conversation that Netflix Docu-Series "The Keepers" shared with the world in 2017.

S2 Ep11: Unsolved Murder of Sister Cathy [If only they had listened]
2697
Please be advised this episode contains content and language that is graphic in nature, listener discretion is strongly advised. Where were you at in life at the age of 13? Personally, I remember being in 8th grade using my free time to binge read Harry Potter books. Charles Franz had a much different experience… For more than 5 years Charles fell victim to a predator - someone he knew as Father Joseph Maskell. You have heard from female survivors so far in this series, but Maskell’s reign of terror wasn’t limited to gender or age. Charles is an amazing person, we thank him for sharing his story with us.

Traveling to Elizabethton, Tennessee, Shane speaks with a Sociology class at Elizabethton High School about the Redhead Murders. This semester they have been challenged by their teacher to study and report on the Redhead Murders. After discovering my podcast, I traveled to their school to hear about the work they have done so far.

On this episode, you hear from these students as they read to you their 8-page Profile of the person responsible for these murders. To express that we all do believe that these six women were victims of a serial killer, I challenged the class to give him a name. The Bible Belt Strangler. With numerous female victims, this series of murders remains an unsolved murder mystery. Join host and investigative podcaster, Shane Waters, alongside Netflix’s Docu-Series The Keepers grassroots investigator Gemma Hoskins as they explore this forgotten serial killer case.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a string of murders of young women took place in the southeastern United States. The victims were all found on the side of highways, and most were never identified. S1 Ep1: The Unsolved Redhead Murders
1274
With numerous female victims, this series of murders remains an unsolved murder mystery. This introduction episode will tell you a little about the Redhead Murders, which was investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) initially thirty years ago.

In 1985, the body of Lisa Ann Jarvis was found on an Interstate 40 entrance ramp in West Memphis, Arkansas. Also known as Lisa Ann Nichols and Lisa Ann Fuller, she had a long criminal record of prostitution, shoplifting, larceny, robbery, and drugs. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation included Jarvis's body on a list of those under investigation as possibly part of serial killings.

On Sunday, September 16, 1984, a hitchhiker discovered her body among the trash. Sergeant Raymond Buchana, a Metro Vice squad officer, said, her rap sheet stretches from the ceiling to the floor three times. Authorities were not sure if one person was responsible for the killings or how many victims there might be, but Jarvis's identification as one of the eight redhead murder victims seemed to be consistent with what they thought in the beginning.

The police officer remarked that she had the second-largest prostitution record in the city of Nashville, and that she had a drug habit worse than his car has a gasoline habit. This language dehumanizes Lisa and makes it seem like she deserved to die because of her lifestyle.

The Johnson Family: A Tragic Story of Murder or Accident?
1011
In the case of Alvira Johnson and her seven children, it is unclear whether they were murdered or if they met their untimely end in an accident. Either way, their story is one that should be remembered. Alvira and Albin Johnson married around 1923, against her parents' wishes. Albin was 36 and Alvira was only 19. Both were born to Swedish immigrants and Albin was described as a typical farmer in the woods. He was strong and could always be seen wearing blue overalls. The couple had seven children together.

Albin and Alvira Johnson were a poor family in the Great Depression. They had seven children together and were rumored to be expecting another. Their friendliness and lack of resources were well-known around their town. One day, their 10-year-old son, Harold, came home from playing with a friend and told his mother that he had eaten too much while at their house. She scolded him, but he didn't understand why Santa never left them anything at Christmas.

Newly Installed Septic Tank Reveals Gruesome Discovery
532
Charlie and Mavis McCloud are installing a new septic tank on their rural property in Canada. They found an old septic tank on the property and decided to use it. However, when they opened it, they found a human body inside. The body was wearing a gray wool sock and a brown shoe, and it appeared to be attached to a leg.

In 1977, a couple in the small Canadian community of Tofield discovered a body in a septic tank. The body was wrapped in a yellow blanket and tied up with nylon, with no ID or indication of sex. After a lengthy autopsy, it was determined that the person was a white or native man who had been brutally beaten, burned, sexually mutilated, and shot before being dumped in the septic tank.

A man's body was discovered in a septic tank on a farm in Canada. The body was well preserved, and it was later determined that the man was male, had all of his teeth, and had recently had dental work done. The man's identity remains unknown.

In 1948 or 1949, a man known only as Sam was brutally murdered and his body was dumped in a septic tank on an abandoned farmhouse. The RCMP believe that Sam was a laborer and possibly a transient, and that the killer was someone local who knew him. The case remains unsolved and Sam's identity is still unknown.

John Hubbard: 1850s Serial Killer in Indiana
2604
While exploring an old museum in Wabash, Indiana - Shane discovers the old basement holds a secret. Join Shane as he sits down with a Historian to discuss why there is a box in the basement of the Wabash County Historical Museum that is full of the bones of a mid-1800s serial killer.

The Wabash County Historical Museum's collections assistant, TJ Honeycutt, gives a tour of the downstairs area which used to be a mortuary for the Jones funeral home. He describes the atmosphere of the place and how it still looks like a place where dead bodies are prepared. He talks about the murderer John Hubbard and how the world was quite a bit different when this murder took place. There was no cell phone footage or DNA evidence back then.

In the 1850s, the town of Wabash was built primarily as a means to and from the Ohio River and Lake Erie. On a farm owned by Isaac Keller, there was a little house called a step up house. The area was called Rich Valley because the soil was particularly rich due to the constant flooding. Aaron French, a former businessman from Cincinnati, moved to the area and attempted to make a living as a tenant farmer.

In 1854, two farmers named Aaron French and John Hubbard became friends after John moved into Aaron's one-room house to help him pay the bills. Isaac Keller and Lewis, two of Aaron's other friends, went over to the house one day to find that Aaron and his family were gone. John and his wife told them that a relative had come from Cincinnati the night before and told them to pack up and leave for Iowa, as Aaron's father, a wealthy landowner, had died and left them a fortune. Isaac and Lewis were skeptical, as Aaron was too ill to be transported, but John assured them that he had been given brandy and was dancing on the floor before they knew it. The Hubbards then sold all of Aaron's remaining possessions to Isaac and Lewis for $40 and left for Iowa that night.

John Hubbard, his wife, and son live in a house near a canal where Irish workers are employed. They take in a boarder, Ed Boyle, who is also of Celtic origin. After living with the family for four months, Ed Boyle meets with a priest and offers him gold coins in exchange for funeral rights and last rites.
