34:26

Tom hits the road and talks with longtime friend Matt in the same room! The guys cover their weekend together in the Land of Enchantment (New Mexico), from the magical Balloon Fiesta to mystical White Sands National Park and multiple church services interspersed! The guys reminisce on 12 years of friendship, affirming one another for the growth they’ve seen in the other. They also discuss straight guys in the backseat yearning for hot girls, sharing adventures with others versus going them alone, and Jesus' fulfilling the Tabernacle of old.

YC097: Scripture Stories, Part 2
01:18:13

We open the scroll on our favorite Scripture stories once again, this time with Tom being joined by Ryan and Aaron! We discuss several Old Testament stories like Abraham and Isaac, Jonah, Hosea and Gomer, and Mephibosheth, as well as some New Testament stories like the man born blind, and Jesus and John at the Last Supper. How do these stories hit us in the crosshairs of our faith, sexuality, and masculinity?

We spend some time catching up on our summer trips after a long break! Aaron went to Yankees games and Broadway shows in New York, and Ryan survived a trip to Mexico without any sickness or sunburn.

Enjoy this second part of our big comeback episode! And please, if you would, call the YOBline before our big 100th episode celebration and let us know any favorite podcast moments or why you enjoy our show!

CC054: Tom & Marshall, Ever the Groomsmen, Never the Groom!
36:52

Tom welcomes back Marshall to talk about things DEFINITELY NOT related to the Enneagram whatsoever. Marshall catches us up with his busy life on the farm, including a major life update of a dear friend’s impending marriage. Marshall shares both the negative and positive emotions involved in this coming change to the friendship, including being asked to be a groomsman. He reads from John 3:29 and discusses his joy as a “friend of the bridegroom,” and the guys discuss the effects of marriage on a mostly single/celibate community like YOB.

Tom also debuts an exciting new prop for the ConvoCast! And he affirms Marshall as a great dancer at weddings. Listen to our full conversation below as the ConvoCast returns to its usual half-hour length with (mostly) lack of Enneagram focus!

YC096: Scripture Stories, Part 1
01:15:07

After a summer of Enneagram ConvoCasts, we’re back with a new YOBcast! It's a two-part episode where we dive into some stories in Scripture that speak to us as SSA/LGBT+ people of faith wrestling with these matters of sexuality and masculinity. For Part 1, Tom is joined by Ben and Will to discuss Hagar, Rahab, the woman at the well, and the early church.

We also spend some time catching up with one another after a long break! Ben moved to another part of the Mitten, Will gives a strong take on instant coffee, and Tom traded his smartphone for a dumb-phone. We get a little crazy in the opening, and we also announce our next YOBBERS retreat coming this November! We'd love to see you there.

Enjoy this big comeback episode, and join us next time for Part 2 of Scripture Stories with Ryan and Aaron! And please, if you would, call the YOBline before our big 100th episode celebration!

CC053: Ben Still Has NO IDEA about His Enneagram Type!
01:12:17

Just when you thought our Enneagram series was finished – we're back with another Ennea episode! We promise this ConvoCast will actually be the last one on the Enneagram (at least for a good while). We wanted to tie a bow on this series by bringing back Ben, who helped kick off this series on YOBcast 095, talking with somebody who doesn't identify as one particular Enneagram type but with multiple ones.

This final episode of the series is for the "Enneagram wanderers" and "Enneagram prodigals" – those who find themselves bouncing and searching among several types, and those more apathetic (or perhaps antagonistic?) with the Enneagram. We hope this broader conversation on decision-making, vices, and virtues resonates wherever you stand with (or even against) the Enneagram!

We start the conversation by diving into the three intelligence centers, as Ben tells us how he uses his heart, his head, and his gut as a maybe Two-Six-Nine. Tom also shares times when he's extended beyond his Four's heart center to utilize his head and gut – including how YOB's very formation in 2015 was rooted in that gut instinct. We close the episode by talking about the nine vices and nine virtues of the Enneagram, including anger at the church, avarice among other men, and our journey with lust and sobriety. Indeed, we really can glean something from all the types, not just fixating on our own.

Does Ben finally decide on his Enneagram type by the end of the episode? Listen below and find out! And thanks for all the support for this series. After a nice long break, we'll finally be back with a new YOBcast next time!

CC052: Daniel Wants a Travel Buddy as a SEVEN!
01:07:11

We conclude these Head Triad episodes, along with our entire Enneagram ConvoCast series with our brother from across the pond, Daniel! Daniel shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Seven (the Enthusiast). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Seven-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Daniel remembers the first time he felt shame for showing enthusiasm as a child, and how that response impacted his introversion – a rare disposition for Sevens. He discusses his love for travel, moving from the Philippines to the United Kingdom, visiting 35 cities in one year, seeing a different country every month, and even coming to America for multiple YOB retreats. But when does a love for travel turn to escape? When is escape healthy and courageous, and when is escape more detrimental? Regarding sexuality and relationships, was he constantly trying to escape something uncomfortable, something painful, something sad? We close the conversation with the growth and beauty of a Seven who can stay put and persevere – with others, with self, and with God.

CC051: Aaron Unleashes the Anxiety as a SIX!
01:08:33

We continue the Head Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with YOBcast regular, Aaron! Aaron shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Six (the Loyalist or Skeptic). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Six-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Aaron discusses the anxiety surrounding his sexuality through the years, including coming out to others as an adult and coming out to himself in high school. He also shares openly about taking medication to help with his anxiety. Throughout the episode we read lots of YOBBER feedback, much of it centering around anxious attachment with other men: how much ongoing reassurance is needed for the relationship, and how much is unhealthy? We talk a lot about fear in this episode, particularly relational fear and this ability to live out a Side B life, but also of courage and comfortability and the Six's ability to be incredibly loyal and steadfast! Perhaps if YOB and the greater "Side B" movement endure through the years, Type Sixes will be a big reason why.

Listen to our full Enneagram conversation, and be sure to follow us as we soon finish dialing around the Enneagram types in our community!

CC050: Will is Supremely Uninterested in the Enneagram as a FIVE!
01:07:47

We open the Head Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with YOBcast regular, Will! Will shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Five (the Investigator or Intellectualist). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Five-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Fives are heady types, supreme thinkers and philosophers, as Will confirms his "endless curiosity" for books and learning, and returning to school whenever he hits an existential crisis. Enneagram expert Ian Cron describes Fives as the most misunderstood type, people with emotions beneath their intellectual exterior, and Will confirms his journey with processing difficult emotions. He shares the appeal of intellectual attraction versus physical attraction for the Five, and he explains how his problem-solving nature wanted to "fix" his "gay problem" in adolescence. During stress Will admits getting disorganized and clingy, but during security he's passionate about strengthening the people around him -- where, as a pastor, his Five-ness particularly shines. During times of doubt and questions, Will returns to the Gospels and his love for how Jesus makes sense of this world.

Listen to our full Enneagram conversation, and be sure to follow us these last few weeks as we finish dialing around the Enneagram with the remaining types in our community!

CC049: Tom & Alex Feel All the Feels as FOURs!
01:10:31

We conclude the Heart Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with a returning guest and member of our community, Alex! Both Alex and Tom share their motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Four (the Individualist or Romantic). As members of our YOB community, how does their Four-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Tom and Alex discuss the qualities they love about being Fours: artistic, empathetic, and yes, unique. In times of security they're objective and productive, taking action and creating things that add beauty to the world. A Four's "superpower" is empathy, giving others permission to "feel all the feels" with them, too. Tom and Alex also dive into their dark side of Four-ness: the neediness, the manipulation, the constant craving for approval, particularly from other men. Fours are often described as people who perceive lacking a critical "missing piece," and as queer or SSA men this hits especially deep for Tom and Alex. In adolescence did they miss some critical component for masculinity or sexuality, along with connecting with the other boys? What is the path forward for a Four in those whirlwinds of emotional stress?

CC048: Adam Loves/Loathes This Vulnerable Spotlight as a THREE!
01:09:10

Adam makes his YOB podcast debut (or does he??) as he helps us get over the hump of this Enneagram ConvoCast series! As a member of our community he opens up about the need for vulnerability as a Three, along with the core struggle it launches against the impressive persona he strives to present. We ponder the reason why Threes are perhaps the least common type in YOB -- and maybe even within the greater "Side B" community? Is it simply because the closet is especially comfortable for a Three and less threatening to their reputation in the Church? Adam also confesses why he thinks Threes are the least desirable type in the Church and how that's impacted his ability to belong as a believer.

CC047: Wes Wants You to Please Touch Him as a TWO!
01:02:00

Wes makes his podcasting debut as a longstanding Enneagram Two in our community! He shares with Tom his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Two (the Giver or Helper). How does Wes's Two-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Since so much of the Two's identity is tied to other people, we dive into this realm of "relating with other men" more than any other episode of this series. In particular, how does a Two respond to that precious loss in male friendship? How does a Two feel a sense of belonging with a community? How important is coming out for a Two? Wes also shares about the Two's relating with God: does a Two feel beautiful in God's eyes or merely tolerable to His purposes? How does the Two experience pride and manipulation in times of stress, and how does the Two experience self-care that isn't selfish during times of growth?

CC046: Jesse Can Summon Two Hours of Fun as a ONE!

Jesse, an Enneagram One, shares with Tom his motivations, fears, stress, and security as the Perfectionist or Reformer. As a member of our YOB community, how does his One-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Jesse discusses his inclination to order and perfection and how that has translated to a need to "clean up" before God, particularly with his sexuality. He shares his love for lists and how he's only recently begun to prioritize tending to his sexual and gender identity. He talks about his messy stress path into Four as well as his security into Seven, including how he embraces a more spontaneous, adventure-seeking nature with his guy friends -- but only for two hours at a time.

CC045: Ryan Knows What Eggs He Wants as a NINE!
51:13

We continue our Enneagram ConvoCast series with Mr. Nine and longtime cohost of the YOBcast: Ryan! Ryan shares with Tom his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Nine (the Peacemaker). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Nine-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Ryan compares himself to how Julia Roberts orders eggs in Runaway Bride, and he also pleads with other types to let him just enjoy his wrong restaurant order! He discusses the Nine's ability to "merge" with other people's passions and personalities in a loss of personal identity, and we read some extensive YOBBER feedback that exchanges "peace" for "unity" as a Nine's primary motivator. We discuss some other feedback about coming out publicly as a Nine versus coming out selectively to "keep the peace." What happens at a church after Ryan comes out and serves in the children's ministry, and some parents are acting a little off? Finally, Ryan shares about the Nine's fear of neediness as he reacts to the neediness in others.

YC095: The Enneagram
01:15:32

We’ve referenced it again and again for dozens of episodes, and now we’re finally devoting an entire episode to the Enneagram! We open up the Enneagram box and share what we’ve found helpful for our personal growth in this trendy personality system. How does the Enneagram impact our self-awareness? And how does this self-awareness impact our view of others?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Ben for an overview of the Enneagram! We dive into the stats of all the types in our community and share a little about our own types. And get ready for the YOB ConvoCast summer series to come, featuring discussions with each of the nine types in our community!

Additionally, as announced in this episode, we're exploring the potential for a Your Other Sisters community! If you're a woman interested or intrigued, or know a woman who might be and would like to learn more, shoot us an email: contact@yourotherbrothers.com. Be sure to leave "YOS" in the subject line! We'd love to explore this conversation with you.

YC093: LGBT+ Media
01:11:09

We've been blogging and podcasting a lot lately about gay characters or themes in various shows, films, and other media. Should we as Jesus-followers who may also identify as LGBT+ but also follow a traditional sexual ethic be consuming LGBT+ media? What are the potential benefits and costs, and where is the line between what is beneficial, acceptable, distracting, or harmful? How do we interact, if at all, with LGBT+ media?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Aaron for this final (for now) discussion on the pros and cons and nuanced middle of LGBT+ media consumption!

CC043: Tom & Alex Love LOVE, VICTOR!
30:10

Tom welcomes YOBBER Alex to bask in the Hulu show Love, Victor, which follows the events of the movie Love, Simon. Alex shares why he loves this show so much, including the racial dynamic with Victor as a half-Puerto Rican, half-Columbian guy and himself as half-Thai. They also discuss one particular episode of the show that features Simon’s LGBT+ community in New York. Couldn’t churches learn from how this community values family, showing love to a so-called “stranger” in Victor? And could there ever be a “Side B” show like this one where Victor finds a community like YOB??

CC042: Tom & Eugene Debate the Gayness of LUCA!
30:20

Tom welcomes back YOB’s film aficionado Eugene to discuss a recent community favorite: Pixar’s Luca! We cut right to the chase with this film: is there anything gay about it? Are either, or both, of the main characters gay? How does our sexuality influence the way we watch this film? Will there be a Luca 2? Do we want a sequel? If we get one, how open are we to exploring Luca and Alberto’s sexualities? Or would such a future plot rob anything from their friendship?

YC092: Second Adolescence
01:32:04

Many gay/SSA folks experience a delayed or "second adolescence" in adulthood after keeping our sexuality secret in our first adolescence when we unconsciously adapted to the heteronormative culture around us. When we finally do find safe masculine circles, whether within YOB or elsewhere, conversational topics like sex or masturbation, or shared male experiences like nudity and cuddling hold great appeal -- if not laced with some of that adolescent immaturity or a tinge (or bucketload) of obsession.

But second adolescence is more than just talking too much about penises or underwear. What about dealing with the heartache of other male friends, particularly other "Side B" ones, who have hurt us? What about our lack of Side B peers or role models growing up? How has what we lacked in our first adolescence affected our lives and growth today?

Join Tom, Ben, and Will for a dispersed yet also focused look at this phenomena of "second adolescence,"  finally putting a name to this nebulous thing that we've all noticed in our community and in ourselves for years!

CC041: Tom & Andy Prep You for the Super Bowl!
29:03

Tom welcomes back his younger brother, Andy, for a little “Super Bowl 101” for our potentially football-illiterate audience! If you’re going to any Super Bowl parties for the socializing, food, commercials, halftime show, or essentially everything but the actual game, Andy gives you a few stories to look out for to keep your interest. The brothers predict the winner and vastly disagree on who you should be cheering for. They also discuss the magic of Valentine’s Day, and where Tom would have gone to college in an alternate universe (definitely not Georgia).

Join Tom, Ryan, and Aaron for our final YOBcast of the year as we discuss where -- and with whom -- we spend the holidays. We hope yours are merry and bright!

YC088: Advent & Sexuality
01:20:38

As people of faith attracted to the same sex, we’ve learned to wait – and wait, and still wait. During this season of Advent, we connect our waiting for Christmas to our waiting for redemption, completeness, and peace. We share our histories with Advent, or lack thereof, both past and present, including our Christmas traditions. As we shift to our sexuality, we hold both our tension and our hope – our expectant waiting – with each hand.

YC087: Heavy Burdens w/ Bridget Eileen Rivera
01:16:30

Bridget Eileen Rivera (from Twitter!) joins us, along with her cat. She’s the author of the new book, Heavy Burdens: Seven Ways LGBTQ Christians Experience Harm in the Church (and just the second woman ever to appear on our show!). We discuss the burdens sexual minorities face regarding matters of so-called “clarity” in Scripture, stereotypical versions of masculinity/femininity, assumed pedophilia when working with children, and forced celibacy. Finally, we ask Bridget if her own choice to pursue celibacy stems from burdensome duty or life-giving joy?

Tom welcomes his pastor to the show! Fred shares some tales from a recent road trip with his mom and unpacks his call to ministry, including how he never expected to be a lead pastor. He also describes his "coming in" story: his first interactions with gay people going all the way back to high school and college, and also his learning about "Side B" gay/SSA people in the church. What advice would Fred give to anyone listening who has never come out to a pastor before?

YC085: Pray Away
01:23:56

This summer Netflix released Pray Away, a documentary following the lives of former leaders of ex-gay ministries and survivors of conversion therapy. It's a heavy film, filled with heavy topics like abuse and self-harm. This may not be the podcast for you if it hits a bit close to home with your story. But if you watched the film and/or feel ready for our conversation on it, we hope this episode can be a blessing as we walk through the film's heaviness with you.

Join Tom, Ben, and Will for our Pray Away takeaways. While Tom only had positive experiences with Exodus International, Will had significant negative ones. Ben gives us his take as a married guy in a mixed-orientation marriage and how other marrieds might see themselves in this film. We share about our Exodus connections with some of the people in the film, as well as the annual conferences Tom and Will attended, and we ponder the notion of whether a "Side B" theology (traditional sexual ethic, LGBT+ identifying) was lacking amid the "Side X" (or "ex-gay") and "Side A" (affirming) points-of-view in the documentary.

It's perhaps our first try at a YOB "film club"? We hope you enjoy this episode.

COMMENT ON THIS EPISODE

YC083: Covenant Friendship w/ Dr. Paul Eddy
01:27:32

Dr. Paul Eddy of Bethel University joins us for our "season finale" of sorts to discuss covenant – particularly the covenant of friendship. Paul lays out the components of covenant, including terms and signs and witnesses, and translates this particular covenant to the grander scheme of God's eternal covenant with His people.

Afterward Tom, Ryan, and Aaron "debrief" the discussion: do we desire covenant friendships in our lives, or how likely do they seem? What are the draws and challenges of covenant friendship, and should we as gay/SSA believers be concerned about the perception of such friendships?

June is widely recognized as LGBT+ Pride Month. How do we as Jesus-followers engage with Pride Month – or is it even ours to engage with? Join Tom, Ryan, and Aaron for a discussion on Pride Month. Have we ever been to Pride, or would we ever go to Pride? And what would be our motivations for doing so?

YC078: Masturbation
01:23:53

Is masturbation sinful? What if it's done without lusting? Is masturbation "solo-sex" or "self-sex," and does it breech God's design for sexuality? What does the Bible have to say, if anything, about masturbation?

Masturbation isn't an oft discussed topic in Christian circles, with many folks describing their childhood discovery of masturbation as if they had been the first ones ever to discover such a secret bodily pleasure. As a result of this secrecy, masturbation has produced a lot of shame for men and women.

Regardless where you land on this issue, we want to break down this shame. Join Tom, Ryan, and Matt as we discuss a classic episode redone and share our vantage points on masturbation. We hope this episode gives a little more light to bless you in this journey.

YC075: Physical Fitness
01:04:38

The beginning of a new year often leads us to new physical fitness routines (including starting one). But so many of us have difficult relationships with working out: wounds from high school locker rooms, daunting equipment, comparing ourselves with the other men around us, and ultimately dissatisfaction with our own bodies. Are these hard things worth pushing through?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Matt for a topic Matt's been wanting to do for quite some time. We share our journeys with physical fitness from middle school to today, including how we're faring amidst this coronavirus pandemic. We talk about working out in community and our motivations for working out our bodies: is it all in the name of self-care, or are there other motivations at play? How does physical fitness translate to other areas of our lives, including loving our neighbor?

We hope you enjoy the episode! (Do a few burpees every time Matt or Ryan groans about burpees...)

YC067: "Side A" Friends Q&A
01:20:34

We're back to answer some amazing YOBBERS questions from our "Side A" Friends podcast from a few episodes back. Join Tom, Dean, and Matt for another deep dive into the world of "Side A" friendships: that is, those friendships with fellow LGBT+ believers who hold an affirming view of same-sex sexual relationships.

Some questions we tackle in this follow-up episode include: Would you go to a Side A friend's gay wedding? How would you pursue Side B friendship if you were the one who is Side A? And how do we apply Paul's words on sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 5 to the modern church?

YC066: Manliness
01:35:03

When do you feel manly? When do you feel not at all manly? Is "manliness" even something worth pursuing?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a return to one of our "classic" episodes in which we discuss opening pickle jars, killing cockroaches, camping out, working out, owning a home, and so much more on this simultaneously shallow and deep topic of manliness. We also dive into the deep end and discuss childhood wounds from PE and exclusions from men's events -- things that affected our budding sense of masculine belonging.

Finally, we can't help ourselves from diving into a little book that's made the rounds in Christian men's circles ... for better or worse or maybe a little of both ... Wild at Heart.

How does "manliness" differ from "masculinity," and what examples from Scripture can we point to and lean on as we pursue healthy masculinity?

YC065: Loving LGBT+ People w/ Bill Henson
01:29:30

Bill Henson of Lead Them Home, Posture Shift, and Guiding Families joins Tom, Ryan, and Dean for a special guest discussion on loving LGBT+ people – both inside and outside the Church. How do we better understand LGBT-identifying people or those who experience same-sex attraction (SSA), and how do we love them well?

We learn some of Bill's story from a business background to full-time LGBT+ outreach and ministry as he tells us about LTH, including the origin story (and challenges) of the name. He also shares why LTH settled on using "LGBT+" in their messaging, as opposed to "LGBTQ+" or any SSA-related terminology.

Tom and Dean jump in with some of their own stories from attending and participating in LTH's Posture Shift events. Finally, Bill talks to us about justice initiatives and why justice should be an important issue for the Church.

YC064: Celibacy
01:39:35

It only took us 64 episodes to talk about celibacy! Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a discussion on sex, singleness, marriage, healthy sexuality, and this mystical notion of "calling."

How many guys in our YOBBERS group feel "called to celibacy"? We dive into our very scientific poll results and answer the question ourselves.

We also look to Scripture to round out our celibacy discussion: from Genesis (what does it mean for man to be "alone"?) to Jesus' bluntness on marriage and eunuchs to Paul's charge for singleness, along with his (and our) thoughts on those "burning with passion."

YC063: The Sex Talk
01:19:05

We're talking about "the talk"! You know, "The Birds and the Bees" (whatever that even means). Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a trip down memory lane as we recount our memories (or lacks thereof) involving the sex talk with our parents, along with sex education at our schools.

How many folks do, in fact, actually receive the sex talk as a kid? Our very scientific poll results from our secret YOBBERS group may surprise you.

We also zoom out for a broader view of sex: how did our family upbringing and culture surrounding sex affect our thoughts and feelings on sex today? And what do we think of God's creating of sex?

We hope you enjoy our latest episode.

01:15:53

Have you ever felt lonely within your sexuality? Do you choose loneliness or does loneliness choose you? Extroverted or introverted, do you embrace regular solitude, treating it as a spiritual practice?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a discussion on the divergence of loneliness and solitude. We talk about the healthy and not-so-healthy ways we cope with loneliness and how we seek out solitude. Additionally, we talk about the dynamic of living alone or with others as single gay/SSA men, forecasting our living situations for the decades to come.

We also dive into Tom's Valentine's Day solo excursion to a brand new Enneagram-centric photo studio. Because of course he did.

YC057: Gay Sex and Hookups
01:18:28

What led to your having gay sex for the first time? Can you separate the physical from the emotional in gay sex? How many times have you had gay sex, and would you consider yourself a sex addict?

It's a throwback episode with three of our original YOB cofounders: Tom, Dean, and Matt. We talk with Matt about his journey and struggles with gay sex and hookups. It's a raw, courageous chronicling of his story as a pastor's kid – a story still being written to this day.

We also catch up with Dean and Matt from the last year or so, including Dean's recent exploits to Canada (and questionable Canadian accent) and Matt's sarcastic sense of humor (or actual disappointment) with Tom.

We’re back to producing two podcast episodes per month all year long, and we hope you enjoy our latest "classic episode" below!

YC056: Pornography
01:25:16

Do we talk about pornography too much as the Church or not nearly enough? Do we "talk about talking about" pornography or do we actually talk about it?

Pornography is more accessible than ever before and, increasingly, more aggressive. It's a struggle and an addiction that has reached and claimed all people: gay, straight, men, and women. Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob as we take a deep dive into the science and story of pornography. It's one of our classic episodes that we're reopening in a new way.

Beyond our discussion on porn, hear about Ryan and Jacob's adventures in the "City of Forts" as well as the notion of our one day recording a podcast in . . . Florida . . . dun dun dun.

YC055: Mentors
01:17:05

In the spirit of resolutions, self-improvement, and growth in this new year, we're talking about mentors: those wise, sage-like figures who guide us through this life.

Tom, Ryan, and Jacob talk about their favorite mentors in books and movies, sharing some of their own mentorship experiences from years past. What qualities do all these figures share in common? We also discuss the concept of mentoring a new generation -- including whether we feel we're even capable of such a thing.

YC054: Holiday Singleness
01:21:19

It's an undoubtedly difficult season for many in our community, and we talk about singleness during the holidays: the disconnect, the loneliness, and the finding of hope and joy when hope and joy may feel so far away.

Tom, Ryan, and Jacob share their stories of holidays past and present, answering some listener questions along the way, including the concept of spending the holidays with chosen family versus blood family, and whether we've ever been asked if we've found that "special lady" yet.

We also talk to Jacob about his reaction to our last episode in which we featured the story of his coming out to his older brother, Nate. And since it's Christmas, Tom hands out some specially themed "love language presents" to his dear brothers. They're sure to enjoy them this Christmas.

It's our year-ending, decade-ending, holiday-themed extravaganza of a podcast!

Our current podcast production schedule is one public episode and one private episode per month, the latter available exclusively to our patrons on Patreon. YC052: Chosen Family
01:47:08

For better or worse, we all start with families of origin. But what of this concept of families of choice? A chosen family that goes beyond blood and DNA?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a discussion on chosen family: what it means for the LGBTQ+ community, what it means for believers in Christ, and what it means for this overlap of communities like YOB, Revoice, and beyond.

Beyond our awesome conversation on chosen family, it's a special episode for other reasons: our first episode back in the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge" in over a year! YC051: Attachment Styles w/ Taylor Zimmerman
02:09:47

We're diving deeper into emotional attachment with special guest, Taylor Zimmerman! Taylor's blogged at Spiritual Friendship and spoken at Revoice. He's a University of Chicago student currently pursuing his third (3rd!) master's degree with interests in philosophy of religion, theology, and psychoanalysis — and how they all come together.

Taylor talks to us about attachment theory and the four attachment styles: secure, ambivalent-preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant.

It's the deepest we've ever doven on this topic, a fascinating psychological exploration into why we attach to other men the ways we do as gay/SSA (same-sex attracted) men, sharing our relational stories along the way. We also close the episode talking about arousal we may experience when attaching to those we love and what it means for the friendship.

Additionally, Tom, Ryan, and Jacob catch up on the last month! Ryan rode a train to Connecticut, Jacob rode a boat in Alaska, and Tom continued living out of his car while shedding pink calamine scales. We also share our "triumphant tidbits" involving vacation styles (chill or action-packed?) and the last times we felt mighty.

Finally, Jacob gets a special surprise in the form of a knock at his door that you won't want to miss.

Our current podcast production schedule is one public episode and one private episode per month, the latter available exclusively to our patrons on Patreon. YC050: Emotional Attachment
01:30:19

We're back! After a brief summer hiatus, we return with our landmark fiftieth episode.

Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob sharing stories of emotional attachment: the good ways we attach to other men, and the not-so-good ways we attach.

We open the episode by catching up on our summer trips and activities, and Tom gives some clarifications from our previous episode on "Letting Go." We also have our "manly morsel" segment (it's always been called that), talking about Jacob's shame of Grubhub and what Ryan should do on his upcoming long train ride.

We then dive into our discussion on emotional attachment. It's a callback to a previous episode on emotional dependency (or "emodep," though Ryan doesn't exactly like that nickname). We differentiate between "dependency" and "attachment" and share both our positive and negative experiences in relationship with other men.

YC046: Church Inclusion w/ Matt Stevens
01:37:17

Many SSA/LGBT+ people struggle to find inclusion in the church — a safe place at least, and a nurturing place at best.

This episode, we bring a very special guest onto the show. His name is Matt, who among other claims to fame (which we waste little time diving into), also pastors at Ryan's church and oversees Ryan's ministry to non-straight people, Intersect. We dive into their ministry relationship and overarching friendship, also discussing with Dean issues of sexuality, singleness, safety, and nurture of sexual minorities in the church.

And we also laugh a lot about Matt's #WeirdJesus voice. It's a big episode.

You can listen to plenty of bonus content and bloopers from this episode on the upcoming episode of our second (secret) podcast, The YOBaLOGUE!

Our current podcast production schedule is one public episode and one private episode per month, the latter available exclusively to our patrons on Patreon. Pledging even $1/month allows you access to The YOBaLOGUE, our 30-minute bonus podcast that features listener feedback, bloopers, one brother beat, and other cut content from this episode.

YC045: Self-Care
01:22:17

Is self-care selfish? How do we commit to healthy practices across all areas of our lives, not just physical ones, as men?

Join Tom, Ryan, and Dean for a healthy discussion on self-care to start the new year! We talk about new year resolutions, one-word themes, and bring back good ole SPERM counts (spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, mental) for checking in with one another. There's a lot of diversity in the room as we talk about what good self-care means to each of us.

We also add another letter to our SPERM count acronym and talk about what good sexual health looks like as men.

We continue our new intro segment, "The Brother Beat," in which Dean brings a meaningful beat about corporate worship, and Ryan, a slightly less serious one about our favorite jokes. You can listen to Tom's "PG-15" beat on the upcoming episode of our bonus podcast, The YOBaLOGUE!

Our current podcast production schedule is one public episode and one private episode per month, the latter available exclusively to our patrons on Patreon. YC044: Jesus
01:31:21

Who is Jesus? What role does Jesus play in our stories and our struggles?

Join Tom, Ryan, and first-timer Kevin for a long overdue discussion on the cornerstone of this entire community: Jesus. We talk about our individual beginnings with Jesus, our favorite Jesus stories, and how Jesus intersects our sexuality and masculinity.

We also make a startling revelation about the viral "Vintage Jesus" videos from many years past.

We meet Kevin to start the show, and we continue our new intro segment: "The Brother Beat." In which we dive into our favorite Christmas movies and play another round of the map game, shouting out our listeners from around the country and around the world.

Our current podcast production schedule is one public episode and one private episode per month, the latter available only to our patrons on Patreon. 01:37:33

How do men experience body image compared to women? On a physical level and an emotional level, what does it mean to possess a healthy male body image? And how do our sexualities tie into our body image?

Join Tom, Ryan, and first-timer Jacob for a discussion on male body image. We talk insecurities about body shapes, friendship desirability, penis size, balding, and our innate sense of masculinity.

We also premiere a new intro segment, "The Brother Beat"! Or something. Where you can listen to us talk about bathrooms for 20 minutes.

YC042: Generations
01:59:45

How have our culture -- and we ourselves -- understood and expressed issues of sexuality across the generations? Join Tom, Ryan, and Marshall for a conversation on these varying generational perspectives: Tom and Ryan as millennials and Marshall as a baby boomer.

We discuss how the generations have addressed sexuality and "coming out" over the decades, accessibility to pornography and promiscuous outlets, the "gay" identity and male-on-male cuddling, and the biggest thing in culture we'd like to see change with the next generation.

We also celebrate our 50,000th podcast download and a new Patreon tier being accomplished! Stay tuned to the end of this episode for a bonus YOBaLOGUE segment if you're not already a patron.

YC041: Why Side B
01:34:26

Why do we choose a traditional, "Side B" sexual ethic as men who follow Jesus? Do we choose this life solely for our convictions or in spite of them? Do we live out a gay/SSA celibate life with joy or in angst and suffering?

Tom welcomes Ryan and Matt for a discussion on why we're Side B, as opposed to "Side A" (gay-affirming), and where these labels even come from. We include some formerly Side A perspectives within our community and dive into the challenges we face as gay/SSA men of faith. We also theorize on the percentage of Side B believers who suffer from internalized homophobia. #hottake

Additionally, we talk about our recent authors' retreat, our new bonus podcast, longboarding, the rains and hail of New Mexico, and of course some #YOBfashion with our resident style-master general, Matt.

You can listen below to our newest episode on WHY SIDE B. We hope you enjoy it! Don’t forget to comment with your Side B stories. We’d love to hear from you.

The YOBaLOGUE: Teaser
20:48

We just launched our brand new monthly bonus podcast on Patreon: The YOBALOGUE. It's sort of an "epilogue" to our regular show and a continuing dialogue with you, our faithful followers, featuring listener calls, comment feedback, cut content, and more.

We'll debut these episodes every month on Patreon just for supporters, but here's a 20-minute sample of our 40-minute premiere! In which Tom suffocates while recording in his studio wardrobe (slash hoping he falls into Narnia).

In this teaser, Tom reads some podcast comments that prompt a personal story about mud wrestling, meeting up with other SSA/gay-identifying people of faith, and a bit of bonus content featuring intro/outro outtakes from Tom's brother, Andy.

Consider supporting YOB on Patreon for as little as $1/month to catch all new YOBALOGUE episodes as they release, along with additional behind-the-scenes content: podcasts, videos, images, and more.
