Just when you thought our Enneagram series was finished – we're back with another Ennea episode! We promise this ConvoCast will actually be the last one on the Enneagram (at least for a good while). We wanted to tie a bow on this series by bringing back Ben, who helped kick off this series on YOBcast 095, talking with somebody who doesn't identify as one particular Enneagram type but with multiple ones.

This final episode of the series is for the "Enneagram wanderers" and "Enneagram prodigals" – those who find themselves bouncing and searching among several types, and those more apathetic (or perhaps antagonistic?) with the Enneagram. We hope this broader conversation on decision-making, vices, and virtues resonates wherever you stand with (or even against) the Enneagram!

We start the conversation by diving into the three intelligence centers, as Ben tells us how he uses his heart, his head, and his gut as a maybe Two-Six-Nine. Tom also shares times when he's extended beyond his Four's heart center to utilize his head and gut – including how YOB's very formation in 2015 was rooted in that gut instinct. We close the episode by talking about the nine vices and nine virtues of the Enneagram, including anger at the church, avarice among other men, and our journey with lust and sobriety. Indeed, we really can glean something from all the types, not just fixating on our own.

Daniel shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Seven (the Enthusiast). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Seven-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Daniel remembers the first time he felt shame for showing enthusiasm as a child, and how that response impacted his introversion – a rare disposition for Sevens. He discusses his love for travel, moving from the Philippines to the United Kingdom, visiting 35 cities in one year, seeing a different country every month, and even coming to America for multiple YOB retreats. But when does a love for travel turn to escape? When is escape healthy and courageous, and when is escape more detrimental? Regarding sexuality and relationships, was he constantly trying to escape something uncomfortable, something painful, something sad? We close the conversation with the growth and beauty of a Seven who can stay put and persevere – with others, with self, and with God.

We continue the Head Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with YOBcast regular, Aaron! Aaron shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Six (the Loyalist or Skeptic). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Six-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Aaron discusses the anxiety surrounding his sexuality through the years, including coming out to others as an adult and coming out to himself in high school. He also shares openly about taking medication to help with his anxiety. Throughout the episode we read lots of YOBBER feedback, much of it centering around anxious attachment with other men: how much ongoing reassurance is needed for the relationship, and how much is unhealthy? We talk a lot about fear in this episode, particularly relational fear and this ability to live out a Side B life, but also of courage and comfortability and the Six's ability to be incredibly loyal and steadfast! Perhaps if YOB and the greater "Side B" movement endure through the years, Type Sixes will be a big reason why.

We open the Head Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with YOBcast regular, Will! Will shares his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Five (the Investigator or Intellectualist). As a member of our YOB community, how does his Five-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Fives are heady types, supreme thinkers and philosophers, as Will confirms his "endless curiosity" for books and learning, and returning to school whenever he hits an existential crisis. Enneagram expert Ian Cron describes Fives as the most misunderstood type, people with emotions beneath their intellectual exterior, and Will confirms his journey with processing difficult emotions. He shares the appeal of intellectual attraction versus physical attraction for the Five, and he explains how his problem-solving nature wanted to "fix" his "gay problem" in adolescence. During stress Will admits getting disorganized and clingy, but during security he's passionate about strengthening the people around him -- where, as a pastor, his Five-ness particularly shines. During times of doubt and questions, Will returns to the Gospels and his love for how Jesus makes sense of this world.

We conclude the Heart Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with a returning guest and member of our community, Alex! Both Alex and Tom share their motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Four (the Individualist or Romantic). As members of our YOB community, how does their Four-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men?

Tom and Alex discuss the qualities they love about being Fours: artistic, empathetic, and yes, unique. In times of security they're objective and productive, taking action and creating things that add beauty to the world. A Four's "superpower" is empathy, giving others permission to "feel all the feels" with them, too. Tom and Alex also dive into their dark side of Four-ness: the neediness, the manipulation, the constant craving for approval, particularly from other men. Fours are often described as people who perceive lacking a critical "missing piece," and as queer or SSA men this hits especially deep for Tom and Alex. In adolescence did they miss some critical component for masculinity or sexuality, along with connecting with the other boys? What is the path forward for a Four in those whirlwinds of emotional stress?

We continue our Enneagram ConvoCast series with Mr. Nine and longtime cohost of the YOBcast: Ryan! Ryan shares with Tom his motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Nine (the Peacemaker). What happens at a church after Ryan comes out and serves in the children's ministry, and some parents are acting a little off? Finally, Ryan shares about the Nine's fear of neediness as he reacts to the neediness in others.

Many gay/SSA folks experience a delayed or "second adolescence" in adulthood after keeping our sexuality secret in our first adolescence when we unconsciously adapted to the heteronormative culture around us. When we finally do find safe masculine circles, whether within YOB or elsewhere, conversational topics like sex or masturbation, or shared male experiences like nudity and cuddling hold great appeal -- if not laced with some of that adolescent immaturity or a tinge (or bucketload) of obsession.

But second adolescence is more than just talking too much about penises or underwear. What about dealing with the heartache of other male friends, particularly other "Side B" ones, who have hurt us? What about our lack of Side B peers or role models growing up? How has what we lacked in our first adolescence affected our lives and growth today?

Join Tom, Ben, and Will for a dispersed yet also focused look at this phenomena of "second adolescence,"  finally putting a name to this nebulous thing that we've all noticed in our community and in ourselves for years!

This summer Netflix released Pray Away, a documentary following the lives of former leaders of ex-gay ministries and survivors of conversion therapy. It's a heavy film, filled with heavy topics like abuse and self-harm. This may not be the podcast for you if it hits a bit close to home with your story. But if you watched the film and/or feel ready for our conversation on it, we hope this episode can be a blessing as we walk through the film's heaviness with you.

Join Tom, Ben, and Will for our Pray Away takeaways. While Tom only had positive experiences with Exodus International, Will had significant negative ones. Ben gives us his take as a married guy in a mixed-orientation marriage and how other marrieds might see themselves in this film. We share about our Exodus connections with some of the people in the film, as well as the annual conferences Tom and Will attended, and we ponder the notion of whether a "Side B" theology (traditional sexual ethic, LGBT+ identifying) was lacking amid the "Side X" (or "ex-gay") and "Side A" (affirming) points-of-view in the documentary.

Dr. Paul Eddy of Bethel University joins us for our "season finale" of sorts to discuss covenant – particularly the covenant of friendship. Paul lays out the components of covenant, including terms and signs and witnesses, and translates this particular covenant to the grander scheme of God's eternal covenant with His people.

Bill Henson of Lead Them Home, Posture Shift, and Guiding Families joins Tom, Ryan, and Dean for a special guest discussion on loving LGBT+ people – both inside and outside the Church. How do we better understand LGBT-identifying people or those who experience same-sex attraction (SSA), and how do we love them well?

We're diving deeper into emotional attachment with special guest, Taylor Zimmerman! Taylor's blogged at Spiritual Friendship and spoken at Revoice. He's a University of Chicago student currently pursuing his third (3rd!) master's degree with interests in philosophy of religion, theology, and psychoanalysis — and how they all come together.

Taylor talks to us about attachment theory and the four attachment styles: secure, ambivalent-preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant.

It's the deepest we've ever doven on this topic, a fascinating psychological exploration into why we attach to other men the ways we do as gay/SSA (same-sex attracted) men, sharing our relational stories along the way. We also close the episode talking about arousal we may experience when attaching to those we love and what it means for the friendship.

Additionally, Tom, Ryan, and Jacob catch up on the last month! Ryan rode a train to Connecticut, Jacob rode a boat in Alaska, and Tom continued living out of his car while shedding pink calamine scales. We also share our "triumphant tidbits" involving vacation styles (chill or action-packed?) and the last times we felt mighty.

Tom welcomes Ryan and Matt for a discussion on why we're Side B, as opposed to "Side A" (gay-affirming), and where these labels even come from. We include some formerly Side A perspectives within our community and dive into the challenges we face as gay/SSA men of faith. We also theorize on the percentage of Side B believers who suffer from internalized homophobia. #hottake
