Loving Yourself WHILE You Lose Weight

When I was losing 100 lbs, there was a moment when I realized I was a whole new person (way before I'd lost all my weight).

My weight stalled at just above 200 lbs for 6 weeks.

I was exercising.
I was eating better than ever had.

The scale wasn't budging and it didn't make sense. In the past, I would've quit.

But this time was different. 

I told myself, "Old me quits in moments like this. New me doesn't quit, even if it feels like things aren't working. The only way I can't lose weight is by giving up."

That was the moment I knew something big was happening. I had changed the way I talked to myself. I didn't quit when my weightloss stalled.

If you want to lose weight for the last time, you can't talk to yourself in a way that leaves you throwing in the towel when things aren't perfect.

This is what makes my approach to weightloss different.

My process for losing weight makes damn sure you no longer throw in the towel when shit gets hard.

This happens because when we set a goal, our brain brings up ALL the horse shit. Like shame about past failed diets. Or fear we won't be able to meet our goal.

But, that doesn't mean you should skip making one.

When we set a goal, it gives us the ability to determine if we're on track to meet it. It's hard to know if you are succeeding without one. And without a goal, we can look at the things that are actually working for you to lose weight.

I've watched too many women skip setting a weightloss goal. Instead, they just google a new meal plan and hope they will be able to do it perfectly.

It's Never Too Late To Change Your Life

It's not true. My co-host Kathy lost weight after years of struggling with her weight.

She quit an accounting job of 32 years to become a life coach.

3 Things you MUST Believe to Lose Weight

I remember thinking at 250lbs, "I will never lose my weight."

I WANTED to lose weight so bad. But I didn't think I could do it.

Day after day, I thought:

How hard it would be for me since my whole family struggled with weight. My genes were 'bad," so why bother.

About all the diets I had failed. There's no way somebody with my track record could lose weight.

So how could someone like me, who'd been overweight since the age of 9, had bad genetics, no idea how to cook, failed diet after failed diet, and ZERO belief in herself, ACTUALLY lose 100lbs?

I had to find the RIGHT kind of belief. I was trying to believe in the wrong things at first.

And that's why belief is so tricky to build. We don't know how to do it.

Maybe last night you got distracted by the dinner conversation. Before you know it, your plate was clean and you got pissed because you didn't ask yourself, 'have I had enough?' yet again.

It's normal.

You're not supposed to get doable hunger right away.

Listen, we've been trained from a young age that we should eat more.

What did your parents say?

"are you sure you're done eating because we're not going to be eating again until dinner?"

"you haven't eaten enough. Quit getting distracted and take a few more bites."

"finish what's on your plate and then you can go play."

As we were growing up, our brains internalized that the body must be wrong and trained us to tune it out.

Combine what we learned growing up with dieting (where an app tells you that you've eaten all your points for the day BUT you're starving)...

It's no wonder why so many of us no longer use our bodies as a tool to tell us when we're hungry or when we've had enough.

The point is ...

Eating when you aren't hungry isn't a terrible thing.

What IS terrible (and will stop you from making progress and make you more apt to quit) is when you talk to yourself like an asshole.

It took time for us to tune our bodies out, and it's going to take the THREE THINGS I reveal in this week's 10-minute podcast to tune it back in.

They *say* you get a weightloss coach, but they are BLOWING SMOKE UP YOUR ASS from the cash you just burned by giving it to them.

But those days also taught me something else. A lot of people can't afford to lose weight. They don't have the money for programs, kits, and trainers.

My mother tried many diets and often quit because she didn't have the money.

They spend time trying to lose weight to feel good about themselves instead of learning how to feel good about themselves so they are motivated in a good way to lose weight.

When you lose weight to feel good about yourself, you will run out of energy. Your inner critic is in charge and whipping your ass daily to make sure you stick to your diet.

And when we run out of energy, we EAT to FEEL GOOD.

You're desperately trying to outrun what's going on inside your head with weightloss and food.

Losing Weight & Afraid of Regaining It

When I lost 100lbs, you'd think I'd be over the moon ecstatic.

There were moments I was thrilled. Don't get me wrong. LOL

Tucking my shirt in was awesome. Shopping in the regular stores blew my mind. Picking up a medium shirt and having it fit was better than any dessert I'd ever eaten.

But there were not enough shopping and getting dressed opportunities to quiet my fears of regaining my weight.

I'd never kept my weight off. I blamed it on being too happy or getting cocky.

But that wasn't the problem.

The problem was I didn't realize how much time I spent in my mind allowing myself to be TERRIFIED of weight gain. And when I was scared, I obsessed over the scale.

If it went up at all, I would convince myself something was wrong. I needed to workout more or eat less.

Even though I lost weight by making small changes, my brain got super irrational when I hit goal because I was so afraid I would gain my weight back.

Irrational thinking leads to irrational actions. Things like trying to skip a meal if I felt the last one "wasn't good enough." Or working out a little longer the day after having a "treat."

Luckily I caught this. I noticed that I was trying to keep my weight off from fear. Losing weight should've made me proud and confident, but I noticed my feelings didn't match my expectations.

This was when I knew I didn't need to let myself stay afraid and react to it.

I needed one simple thing:

TO CHANGE HOW I THOUGHT ABOUT MYSELF.

Losing weight triggered a new level of insecurities in me, and that was a good thing. The more you find bullshit thinking, the more you find a path to thinking better about yourself.

Underworking vs. Overworking

Why doesn't hard work just WORK?

Well, it's because you've never been taught that OVERWORKING is worse than UNDERWORKING.

In weightloss, we’re more likely to overwork ourselves in the beginning and then quit the moment something doesn't "go right." Things like:

-The scale doesn't move.

-Something bad happens in life.

-You see some results and then reward yourself with food (so you can "take it easy" for a minute).

After years of overworking on diets, I learned that my brain wasn’t ready for all those changes I tried to make. What I needed were changes I could build upon. Small ones where I could easily tell myself, "Look, you're doing it. So what's next?"

I Deserve This

I remember day after day wanting to lose weight so bad.

I'd wake up, swear I was going to be "good," and head off to face a day filled with putting out fires and rushing around dealing with way too much for one woman to handle.

I was the "go to" person to get shit done:

  1. Corinne will handle it.

  2. Corinne's good under pressure.

  3. Mommy is the only person I want right now.

Hell, if my cat could talk, I'm sure she would say that I'm the only one who can clean the cat box EXACTLY as she needs it to do her business.

Then, night after night, I'd find myself unwinding with a few glasses of wine or a big ass bowl of cereal (and I mean BIG).

All the while thinking, "I deserve this."

What a fucking messed-up message that is. Do you know what I deserved?

✓ Telling myself what a baller I was at the end of the day instead of thinking I didn't get enough done.

✓ An honest conversation with people in my life about what I needed help with (instead of choosing not to look weak or put people out).

✓ I also deserved to lose the weight I wanted to and end the day proud instead of constantly swearing that tomorrow would be better.

Basic Mistakes

I teach four simple steps to weightloss.

Drink water (shoot for 64 ounces to help prevent carb and salt cravings).

Get 7-9 hours of sleep (otherwise, your body can't burn fat and will store it instead).

Eat when you get hungry (not just when it's time or you want to) and stop right before you're full (instead of when you feel bloated and burpy).

And, make a plan of what you'll eat for the day, including foods you like (instead of hoping you'll "do good" and then eating whatever you want in the moment when you're tired and stressed).

That's the bottom line of everything I teach. It's simple and makes sense. But there are a couple of mistakes I see people make all the time.

I recently spent a week with 20,000 women teaching them how to take control of food.

And I learned two things.

One is that the diet industry has done a good job teaching us how to be terrified of food.

We spend our days thinking...What if I get hungry?

Thank you to all the bat shit crazy diets that convinced us eating 1200 calories a day "was good for us."

And kudos to the diets that said we need to eat every 2-3 hours, tricking us into believing that the way our bodies were designed is all a big fat lie.

THE TRUTH? You are designed NOT TO EAT UNTIL YOU ARE PHYSICALLY HUNGRY.

Why do you think you have belly chemicals to signal hunger and satisfaction to begin with? The good Lord didn't give those to you because He was bored AF designing you.

Look, you allowing hunger isn't a problem. It's what you make hungry mean that's the problem.

We all make being hungry mean some fucked up shit.

"I'll starve if I don't eat enough."

No, you won't! You might get hungry again and just eat! But at least TEST if you need to eat as much as you THINK you do.

"If I don't eat it all, not only am I "wasting" the food, but I might not get it again for a while!"

Like you ain't ever gonna eat a cheeseburger again for the rest of your life? Come on. And tell me whose belly, other than yours, benefits when you overeat for fear of waste.

The second thing I learned was how terrified people are they can't lose weight.

And when you're afraid, you're stuck making excuses as to why you can't lose weight because you don't want to face your FEARS.

We waste time thinking we don't have time, enough support, or the right conditions to lose weight.

When we could be spending time thinking about why we want it, what we ARE willing to do, the things we are willing to say no to, and the reasons we might be more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Why You Can't Lose Weight (and how to fix it)

We have a lot of stories about our weight.

We forget the stories are debatable because they feel true to us. Day after day, we continue to think our bullshit and it just gets more and more believable.

The problem isn't that our shitty ass stories are true. The problem is we aren't CHALLENGING those stories with something equally as true.

I had the busted ass thought that I could lose weight but couldn't keep it off. After 20+ diets where I lost and regained 75lbs, I could argue all day that I'd always be overweight.

It never occurred to me that thinking about my failed diets was not USEFUL. It was a huge waste of my time to allow myself to feel defeated over my past.

Think about it. Most of us say, "I want to feel motivated and confident," when we start to lose weight. Yet we sit around worrying about every bite we put in our mouth, wondering if this will work, and then ruminating over each failure.

When I finally lost 100lbs, it had very little to do with what I ate and what I did. Hell, I was losing weight leaving mayo on cheeseburgers, swapping out a half-gallon of ice cream for a big ass bowl, and walking 15 minutes a day instead of laying on the couch thinking about how much I hated going to the gym.

The things I teach you to DO in weightloss are simple. What makes them easy is learning how to drop the BS stories around food, your body, your weight, and your life that feel as true as the sky is blue.

What changed most for me in weightloss was noticing when I was thinking like an asshole and deciding to think in a way that would help me.

That old BS thought, "I can't keep weight off," meant I had to think something equally as true when it reared its defeating and frustrating head.

I started with, "I'm figuring this out a little at a time." That was equally as true and helped me calm the F-down every day. It focused me on what I COULD do that day instead of what I probably wouldn't.

In today's podcast, the first person I coach is struggling with her old shitty diet thinking that keeps coming back. I give her great questions to ask herself so that each day she's more focused on who she wants to be more than what she's afraid will happen.

One of the most asked questions I get is, "How do I keep going when I want to quit my diet?"

Losing weight is hard. There's a lot of behavioral changes to make. The internet is filled with endless diet plans and methods that hold the promise of a quick fix.

Hell, your doctor is probably telling you to lose weight "but it'll be nearly impossible."

Your whole life feels like an endless cycle of starting and stopping diets where you work so hard. You try so many different things. But nothing is sticking. Nothing feels like you can keep doing it for the long haul.

Maybe you wonder, "Why can't I get started?" Or, "Why can't I just lose weight and be done?"

If you’re struggling to lose weight or keep it off I want you to know it's not your fault. The diets you've done in the past failed to teach you the important things.

Things like how to be around your favorite foods and enjoy them (instead of being so worried you'll overeat that you either RUN in the opposite direction OR go face down in it fearing you won't get to eat it again for a long time).

Leaving Food Behind When You Eat Out

Hate wasting food at a restaurant? Me too, but we gotta stop feeling wasteful if we're going to lose weight.

I grew up poor, eating at buffets, and my momma saying, "Eat all you can because I don't know when the next meal will be."

This led to a lifelong problem of overeating. I'd go out to eat. A big ass heaping of food would arrive that's tasty AF.

As I ate and hit the point where I've had just enough knowing anymore and it's time to unbutton the pants, my brain lights up like a firecracker thinking...

"I don't want to waste it. I need to get my money's worth."

Sure I can get a to-go box but in the moment I don't want a damn box. I want another fork load of steak dipped in mashed potatoes.

Meal Planning for Weightloss

This is a total breakdown of how I plan food.

Unless you live under a rock you know all about making a Doable Food Plan.

I firmly believe that writing down what you WILL eat for the day ahead of time works.

First, the version of you planning the food is looking at what you are facing that day and balancing it against what you want for yourself in a week, a month, and a year.

Second, if you're like me the reason you need to lose weight is that when you're left to "figure out what to eat" or "decide what you want in the moment" your EMOTIONS are doing the talking. And often the emotions of the moment are stress, anxiety, or busted ass tired. None of those guys ever make "healthy" choices.

Third, you need to quit thinking about food so fucking much! Write it down and the rest of the day think about your LIFE. Not what you are eating the next meal so you have something to look forward to. (Hint: that's a huge problem if the only joy you get is looking forward to what you'll eat.)

As much as I loved him I felt someone like me, a big girl, wasn't suppose to have a good man in her life. I had such a self-concept and was convinced I was destined to be with douchebags who cheated on me.

Let's just say, I did a lot to test his love so I could convince myself he wasn't going anywhere. Yep, I talk about this in the podcast as shameful as it felt to admit it.

But, this podcast was special because there was one thing I discovered while talking to Chris.

He has always loved me for who I am. He has always seen me at my fullest potential before I could see it. And most importantly he has always been willing to believe one day I would see it, too.

Chris has always loved me even when I find it hard to love myself. Doing this podcast reminded me how important it is that we don't get lost in our own insecurities, that we miss out on all the love surrounding us.

How My Mom Lost 100lbs

It’s a first for me because I have my mama on, who everyone including me, calls Mammy.

We’re talking all about our relationship and how weightloss has brought us closer together.

My mother is one of my biggest inspirations. She lost her 110lbs later in life using tools that I created to help EVERY woman.

My mother used No BS to greatly improve her health and belief in herself. It’s literally changed her life so much that now she works for me, answering your customer service questions.

Mammy and I have done the work to embrace our happy ending by allowing ourselves to be authentically each other.

Y’all know, I live my life like an open book.

Every week, I shamelessly share the up’s and down’s of my weightloss journey and all about my relationships with my friends, family, and No BS Women.

Today, I want to share more vulnerably about my feelings toward my drinking.

Like many women, there was a time I used several glasses of wine to take the edge off of an exhausting day.

Over the last two years, I’ve worked hard to understand and even redefine my relationship to alcohol.

I didn't decide to quit drinking cold turkey. Instead, I used the same mindset for handling my food urges to reduce my drinking by 75%.

I listened to other No BS women talk about the similarities in food and drinking urges, just like in my own experience. My response was to have a special overdrinking course created in my private membership to support their needs.

It's the difference between saying "I can't" and saying "I won't".

Think about how many times a day you say "I can't lose weight" or "I can't follow my plan". What you're really saying is that some outside force is preventing you from getting your work done.

If you change the script to "I won't...." then you are taking responsibility for the decision you are making to not do the work.

Find people who do.

 

Use it as fuel to learn to support yourself unconditionally. 

 

Prove them wrong.

 

I want you to realize if someone else doesn’t believe in you that it doesn’t lessen your ability to lose weight. It shows you how much you are willing to believe in yourself.

 

It allows you to stop blaming and excusing your way to remaining at your weight.

Confidence builds from doing the things you want to learn and acting as if you already know them. It's the byproduct of showing up every day with your 24 hour plan taking a stab stopping eating before you get full. It's repeatedly getting back on plan when you make a mistake.

I have always made decisions at lightning speed. When it's time to make a choice, I set a deadline and I go all in, even when I'm not sure that it's the right choice.

People think I'm crazy or moan at how pie-in-the-sky it is to think amazing things on purpose.

 

Then, we complain that we have an inner bully. 

 

Ladies. You want to fix the problem or not? You are going to think. We know that. Let's just start being more deliberate with it so we can get what we want. OUR GOALS!

 

One of the best things you can do for yourself when it comes to weightloss is to learn how to fill your brain with purposeful, good thoughts.

 

Guess what? When you do that you squeeze out time for non-purposeful harmful thoughts. This doesn't mean the old crap goes away. Doing the deliberate, nice talk just means you are at least evening out the playing field.

 

When you create a goal, you must picture yourself reaching that goal. Let's say you set a goal weight. What do you do at that weight? How do you feel? What do you look like?

 

Today's podcast dives deep in how to think more about where you are going than hating where you are.

I remember crazy diets I tried hoping this would be the one that would work.

The Military Diet was my favorite. It had tuna and ice cream on it. You ate this crazy mix for three days and then you eat “normally” for four.

If I knew how to eat normally I wouldn’t be on the Military Diet!

That’s the problem with your past diets. They expect you to just wake up on Monday, get your emotional eating act together and VOILA! You lose weight.

We are hosed year after year by the diet industry. This time of year is THE WORST.

You are seeing all the ads that promise MAJOR weightloss and this amazing happy life that will be the result of pre-packaged meals and a gym membership.

IF YOU DON’T READ ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE READ THIS.

They are counting on your desperation to lose weight. They will tell you about pills, shakes, meal plans, and more to convince you that weightloss is fast and easy.

What they don’t understand is that when you eat chips and ice cream at 8pm has nothing to do with being hungry.

I know back when I weighed 250lbs I ate because I was TIRED and desperately wanted some me time.

If you are like me, no shake makes you feel cared for and deserving of quiet time. Pills don’t take away feelings of stress and overwhelm from another day of not getting it all done.

I tried these diets and FAILED them time after time. I felt like a failure.

If you feel me then know this…

All that’s happened is the diet industry has set you up year after year to fail. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE.
