Inner Work 150: Patterns of Scarcity in Ancestral Contracts
43:07

Are you carrying a mindset of scarcity, lack, or unworthiness when it comes to money? Fear of not having enough or losing what you do have? If yes, it's possible these patterns, emotions, and beliefs regarding money were passed down to you through your family line.

Join me for another episode of INNER WORK where we explore the influence and repercussions of ancestral contracts, patterns, and burdens in our lives. Focusing on inherited beliefs and emotions around money and abundance, I share a case study in ancestral contracts from my own family.

AWAKENING: Dealing with money and finances on the spiritual path
42:11

Although you are primarily an Infinite Being of Light, you're also incarnated into a physical, human body. On the 3D human plane, money is a necessary currency - to keep yourself alive, to feed yourself, to shelter yourself, to make things happen in the world.

In this episode of AWAKENING, I answer a listener email about how to shift into a mindset of abundance, create a healthy relationship with money, and forgive ourselves for any past financial mistakes or missteps.

I also address why it's best not to demonize money or see it as evil. Ultimately, it's not money that corrupts us. What can corrupt us is an unchecked ego, which seeks to accumulate more and more and constantly fears lack or tries to assert its power over others.

Thank you to Cass for writing in and asking these thoughtful questions!

Inner Work 149: Healing After Betrayal
44:04

In this episode of INNER WORK, I respond to a listener email about how to heal after experiencing cheating in a relationship. I use this as a jumping-off point to address many different experiences of betrayal - within families, in friendships, in romantic partnerships - and how we can begin to heal the aftereffects of betrayal.

Please be kind and compassionate with yourself as you listen to this episode, and allow yourself to gently feel anything that comes up for you. Please know that healing is always possible.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Amber for writing in and asking this vulnerable question.

AWAKENING: Are you suppressing your life force?
38:25

In this episode of AWAKENING, I explore why it's important to identify any behaviors, habits, relationships, or choices that could be suppressing your life force. This is your vital energy, which animates your physical body. For you to feel healthy, balanced, and spiritually connected, your life force must be flowing freely throughout your body and energy system.

Join me for a discussion of:

  • what is your life force, and where does this concept come from?
  • what are the negative consequences of suppressing or blocking your life force?
  • which behaviors, habits, and patterns can potentially suppress your life force and drain your energy?
  • questions to ask yourself to determine if you're supporting your life force or blocking it

Inner Work 148: Returning to the World of Silence in Your Heart
35:49

When you listen with your heart instead of your head or human ears, what do you hear? What do you perceive and know?

This episode of INNER WORK is all about the frequency, resonance, and deep knowing of your heart. Your heart holds a powerful seed of silence, healing, wisdom, and connection to all that is - to every other Soul in this Universe. So how do you tune out of the human world of noise, confusion, and (often) chaos to return to the healing silence of your heart? Join me for a discussion of this, as I invite you to become a more heart-centered being.

This topic was inspired by a beautiful, meaningful, mystical poem by healer and artist Kathryn Wyatt. Thank you Kathryn for allowing me to share your poem. To explore Kathryn's work, please visit https://blueonyxarts.com

Inner Work 147: Navigating the Complexities of Family in the Human Dimension
36:02

How can you navigate the complexities of having a family in the human dimension? In this episode of INNER WORK, I respond to a listener email on this topic. Join me for a discussion of:

  • the complexities of family dynamics in our human dimension
  • dispelling myths and delusions about family from the 3D reality, such as the myths that blood is thicker than water and that you owe your family or parents your life
  • how to deal with feelings of guilt, burden, or obligation towards your family
  • what it can feel like to be a Starseed or interplanetary soul in a family of (mostly) Earth-based souls
  • giving yourself permission to create a family or tribe outside your family of origin

Thank you to Jodie for writing in with this thought-provoking question, and for allowing me to share her words on the air.

AWAKENING: Clearing Dysfunctional Ancestral Patterns, Contracts, and Burdens
31:31

In this episode of AWAKENING, we explore the effects of dysfunctional ancestral patterns, contracts, and burdens you might be carrying.

Join me for a discussion of:

  • what are ancestral contracts, vows, and unconscious agreements?
  • how do these contracts and burdens get passed down through the family line?
  • the importance of identifying unconscious agreements you might have with ancestors or family members - including agreements to suppress your truth, to play small, to keep the peace at all costs, to abandon yourself, to rescue everyone, to feel unworthy of abundance, or to carry your ancestors' suffering for them
  • exploring a sequence of powerful questions to identify potential ancestral contracts and patterns in your life

I've created a special resource to go along with this episode: a 40-minute guided healing journey to clear any and all ancestral contracts, patterns, burdens, and unconscious agreements from your energy field and physical body. Inner Work 146: Are you receiving love openly?
39:21

Are you receiving love openly? Are you connecting to the stream of love all around you and within you?

This episode of INNER WORK is all about the energy of love, as well as your capacity to feel, connect to, receive, and embody that energy. We'll begin with a quick exercise to check in on your ability to give and receive self-love (we must always start here). I then talk about:

  • what might hinder your capacity to give and receive love
  • why sometimes we close our hearts off for self-protection
  • what happens when you carry the painful belief that you're broken, flawed, or unlovable - at your core
  • intimate relationships and what they teach us about ourselves
  • overcoming the delusion that a romantic partner can complete or fix you

Throughout the episode, I mention the book A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson.

AWAKENING: Experiencing a crisis of purpose as you awaken
33:57

In this episode of AWAKENING, I explore what it means to experience a crisis of purpose as you awaken. Join me for a discussion of:

  • what is a crisis of purpose? how do you know if you're going through one?
  • how waking up spiritually can make us realize we're not in alignment with our true purpose
  • how your tolerance for mis-alignment and lack of fulfillment goes down the more you awaken
  • my own crisis of purpose that led me to quit academia to start doing spiritual work
  • practices to begin connecting with your true, Soul-level purpose

Inner Work 145: Can we use substances mindfully on the spiritual path?
28:47

In this episode of INNER WORK, I explore whether it's possible to remain on the spiritual path - and continue evolving - while using substances such as alcohol and drugs.

Join me for a discussion on:

  • can alcohol use be compatible with the spiritual path?
  • the importance of identifying our intentions and motivations for using substances
  • how to notice if a particular substance or behavior is hindering your growth
  • being mindful of how we're bonding with others, especially if some of our relationships are built mostly on substance use

Towards the end of this episode, I asked my husband and lifelong spiritual seeker Garrett to chime in with his first-hand experience of psychedelics and "tripping" (since I have none!).

I extend my deepest gratitude to Kris for writing in and sparking this episode! Your openness and vulnerability in sharing have served all of us.

This episode of AWAKENING explores both the benefits and potential consequences of being vulnerable with people in your life. I share a few personal anecdotes of being vulnerable in 2022 and how my friends and family members have responded.

Join me for a discussion of:

  • what it really means to be vulnerable with yourself and others
  • why some people have a more limited capacity and tolerance for vulnerability
  • how to accept where others are while being true to yourself and your need for deep connection
  • how to deal with a vulnerability hangover
  • how to decide whether, with whom, and how much to share when big things happen in your life

AWAKENING: How to bring your spiritual insights down to Earth
32:23

Recently, a listener of this podcast asked me an important question: how do we bring our insights and healing down to Earth, to share them with others? How do we embody our spiritual insights?

In this episode of AWAKENING, I answer this question and talk about:

  • how to avoid using spirituality or spiritual tools (like the Akashic Records) as forms of escapism
  • how to periodically review your spiritual insights and lessons, to see whether you're actually applying them in your life
  • a personal story of how I've been applying a recent spiritual insight in my own life
  • questions to help you come into greater integrity with yourself and your spiritual principles

Inner Work 141: Hunger, Desire, and Your Relationship with Food
36:44

This episode of INNER WORK is a spiritual exploration of hunger, desire, and how we relate to food. This discussion will be especially helpful if you have (or have ever had) a disordered relationship to food and eating. We'll examine what your relationship to food might have to do with your deeper hungers and desires, particularly if you're not fully allowing yourself to feel or express those desires. We'll also explore how the way you relate to food can often point to deeper places in yourself that are not being fulfilled or tended to.

In this episode, I quote from two books: Eating in the Light of the Moon by Anita Johnston, and Women Food and God by Geneen Roth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: this podcast contains a discussion of disordered eating. If this is triggering to you, please skip it. This podcast is not a substitute for medical or psychological advice, and I am not a doctor or eating disorder counselor. Inner Work 140: Outgrowing Your Job, Career, or Business
29:59

What do you do if you outgrow your job, career, profession, or business? What happens if you discover that your work, or certain ways of working, are no longer aligned with you?

Join me for a discussion on this common experience of outgrowing your work or business as you continue awakening. In this episode, I talk about:

  • the health challenges that have moved me to recognize the ways in which I've outgrown my spiritual business and past ways of working
  • the importance of allowing your old identity to die to make space for the new to emerge
  • being curious and truthful with yourself as you explore new possibilities for work, career, or business
  • recognizing any unhelpful roles or identities you've taken on at work (like being the Helper, the Fixer, the Overachiever, etc), and releasing them

I also share a quick sneak preview about my upcoming course on discovering and living your true life purpose.

AWAKENING: What does letting go really mean?
28:58

Does letting go of something mean that you no longer care about it? Or that you shouldn't have any feelings about it? Or that you should never think about it again? A listener recently wrote in with these questions - and more - about what it really means to let go.

In this episode, I answer this listener's email by exploring the spiritual concepts of "letting go", attachment and detachment, and surrendering to the flow of life.

In this interview, Rachel shares her infectious enthusiasm and vibrant energy with me as we talk about her understanding of the Akashic Records, what healing really means, and how to work with "off-planet" energy in a grounded, useful way – among other fascinating topics.

AWAKENING: Trusting the good (with affirmations)
30:11

Do you have a hard time trusting the good in your life? Or trusting that life CAN be good? Or trusting that good things can last? This is the episode for you.

As you begin creating a more aligned, joyful life on your path of awakening, you might get tripped up if a part of you feels unworthy of goodness. Unworthy of expansion and freedom. Or if a part of you is skeptical about good things lasting, and is still expecting for the other shoe to drop.

In this episode of AWAKENING, we'll explore what could be behind that skepticism or difficulty trusting the good. I've included some affirmations to support you in trusting yourself and in your ability to create and sustain good things in your life.

Inner Work 138: Using your brain to heal your body with Ashok Gupta of The Gupta Program
42:43

This episode is very important if you have any type of chronic or mystery illness where conventional medicine has been unable to help you. If you're in that situation, or know of someone who is, the information offered here will be invaluable!

Personal note from Josephine: I myself have been using The Gupta Program to heal a hard-to-treat illness called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), which I've had for 6 years. I wanted to commit myself to this program for a solid 3-4 months before recommending it. I am now recommending it because IT WORKS.

Ashok Gupta is the creator of The Gupta Program. His life was interrupted in his early 20s when he was struck down with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and conventional medicine was unable to help. He set out to do his own neurological and health research, and recovered himself 100%. This research, and everything he learned along the way, became the basis of The Gupta Program - a revolutionary neuroplasticity, mindfulness, and holistic health program for chronic conditions including:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
  • Mold Illness
  • Food Intolerances
  • SIBO
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
  • Lyme disease
  • long COVID

In this interview, Ashok explains how these types of conditions are created and how you can heal them at the root level - the brain. We talk about neuroplasticity, how the brain gets stuck in loops that promote dis-ease and imbalance in the body, and how to create new pathways in the brain to emerge out of those unhealthy loops.

AWAKENING: Being ok with disappointing others on your spiritual journey
30:19

In this episode of AWAKENING, I respond to a listener email that asked this question: What happens when a decision on your spiritual journey hurts someone else?

We'll dive into the topic of making tough choices on your spiritual path, when you know those choices will likely upset, hurt, or disappoint someone else. Join me for a discussion on:

  • why it's so critical for you to live your truth and follow your Soul's calling, and how it hurts you and everyone else when you don't do this
  • how to be more ok with disappointing others as you continue awakening
  • how you can live authentically without abandoning yourself while still being a compassionate human
  • the importance of detachment in close relationships (especially family relationships)

Thank you to Diane for submitting this thought-provoking question!

AWAKENING: Releasing the past and shifting to a new identity
35:00

Are you allowing the past to define you? Are you still living an identity that was created long ago, and that no longer reflects who you really are... or who you are meant to be in this lifetime?

This episode of AWAKENING is all about coming to terms with and releasing the past, so you can create a new identity from an empowered, conscious, awakened place within yourself.

I talk about how we unconsciously develop constricting, unhelpful, limited identities based on past experiences, and share a personal story to illustrate this. We'll then move into some powerful exercises to release limiting belief systems, behaviors, and energetic cords keeping you tethered to this old identity.

  • how and why insight is only one level of healing
  • the temptation to stay only at a mental level of healing, which can delay emotional, spiritual, and physical healing
  • how we can become addicted to mental breakthroughs at the expense of deeper healing

AWAKENING: Your birthright is to thrive, not just survive
27:29

On the path of awakening, you can sometimes feel stuck in survival mode. You might use this mode as a coping mechanism, if you learned early on in life that you need to be tough, to put up with things, and to survive.

In this episode, I answer a listener's email about how to emerge out of survival mode and begin thriving. Join me for a discussion on:

  • how there's absolutely NOTHING you need to just tolerate or put up with
  • how survival mode keeps you stuck in your reptilian brain, unable to make creative and empowered choices for yourself
  • the importance of resolving childhood trauma to emerge out of survival mode and feel safe
  • how to start "breaking the habit of being yourself" (in the words of Dr. Joe Dispenza)

Throughout this episode, I recommend these important books:

BONUS: Why Tarot cards are not evil
19:13

I've sometimes heard from people that the Tarot is evil, and that using Tarot cards opens us up to negative forces and energies. I have also met people who are afraid of using the Tarot for these kinds of reasons. Is there any veracity to this?

In this bonus episode of INNER WORK, I address the belief that Tarot cards are evil. Join me for a discussion of:

  • religious references and thoughts on Tarot cards & "divination"
  • why Tarot cards - and other healing tools & practices - have been condemned throughout history
  • powerful ways of using the Tarot that don't involve fortune-telling or divination
  • the Doreen Virtue situation (and her ban on Tarot cards)

AWAKENING: What are you allowing to take up residence in you?
30:14

Your physical body is like a container for your Soul and Higher Self. But what happens when you've filled up this container with too many intrusive "guests", and your Higher Self is unable to anchor into your body? Why is it important to be able to fully embody your Higher Self? That's what we'll explore in this episode of AWAKENING.

Some of the intrusive or unwelcome guests that can occupy your body and energy field include the Overachiever, the Fixer, the Victim, and the Approval Seeker.

These are subpersonalities, or limited aspects of you that can get triggered by certain situations and people. Join me for a conversation on:

  • the 6 most common subpersonalities that block your Higher Self and sabotage your healing
  • how to begin noticing what you're allowing to take up residence within you
  • the importance of recognizing the opposing agendas of your subpersonalities, so you can resolve inner conflict

26:02
Speed, efficiency, multitasking, and productivity are highly valued in our modern culture. This means we've lost touch with the slower rhythms and pace of nature and our inner selves.

  • how we've become disconnected from a slower rhythm of life (and the consequences of this)
  • what drives you to keep rushing, pushing, and trying to be productive at all times
  • the key, deeper fears that fuel the dysfunctional behavior of rushing
  • the protective mechanism that sometimes prevents you from slowing down if you have frozen trauma in your body or nervous system

Inner Work 129: Shifting from the ego paradigm to the Akashic paradigm
29:55

How do the Akashic Records work, and how can you access them? What are the Akashic Records made of? Where are they located? What is the Akashic Field?

To answer such questions, this episode of Inner Work takes you into the research of Ervin Laszlo, a Hungarian philosopher and systems theorist who has written extensively about the Akashic Field (or A-field).

I cover the 3 immutable laws that govern the Akashic Field, and how those laws can be applied in your daily life to reach higher levels of consciousness and evolution.

This then leads into a discussion about what it means to shift from an ego-based paradigm to an Akashic paradigm of living and being.

I quote from Laszlo's book The Immutable Laws of the Akashic Field throughout this episode.

AWAKENING: Leaving behind the things you've outgrown
23:09

The process of awakening will cause you to outgrow certain situations, relationships, people, habits, and ways of thinking/being. This happens naturally as you evolve and shed old, outdated layers of yourself.

In this episode, partly inspired by the 8 of Cups from the Tarot, I talk about this process of outgrowing things and people and how it can bring up some deep fears of losing your identity, status, and the life you've been building for years or even decades.

Join me for a conversation on:

  • possible signs & indicators that you've outgrown something
  • how to deal with the discomfort of walking away from an established relationship, career, or personal situation
  • how to start figuring out what needs to be released from your life
  • the importance of conserving your energy by stepping away from the things, people, and situations that no longer fit you

Inner Work 128: Going beyond the limits of conventional medicine to heal the whole self w/ Dr. Lissa Rankin
59:42

My guest for this episode is Dr. Lissa Rankin, a healer, author, mystic, and activist committed to healing the landscape of healthcare. In this interview, we reflect on deep questions including:

  • When it comes to healing from illness and injury, how is it that some people do everything right and stay sick, while others fully recover?
  • How does faith healing work - or does it?
  • Can we make ourselves more miracle-prone to faciliate healing and recovery?
  • Why do some healers and doctors abuse their power, and how does a healer's personal qualities factor into the healing process?

In her new book, Sacred Medicine: A Doctor's Quest to Unravel the Mysteries of Healing, Dr. Rankin shares her seven-year journey to answer such questions, from pilgrimage spots to holy mountains, from faith healers to prayer circles, as well as her conversations with healing and trauma experts including Dr. Gabor Mate, Donna Eden, and Richard Schwartz. In her book, Dr. Rankin shares the wisdom and practical healing tools learned from energy healers, Indigenous spiritual leaders, and cutting-edge psychotherapies.

AWAKENING: Navigating choice points as a spiritual practice
25:55

There are so many choices you make every day, from the mundane and minor to life-defining choices. This episode of AWAKENING is all about using the choice points you face every day as a kind of spiritual practice - as an opportunity to notice what you're choosing for yourself as well as which parts of you are informing your decision-making. Bringing more consciousness to this can help you slow down and make the most aligned, supportive, and life-affirming choices.

For some specific examples, we'll look at how you're navigating choices around food, rest, and sticking to a daily spiritual practice or routine (and what happens when resistance comes up or if you have conflicting parts of you pulling you in two directions).

In this episode, I mention my goal to keep the podcast ad-free indefinitely. If you've gotten some value out of the podcast and can help me make that happen, you can donate ANY amount that works for you here:

Inner Work 127: A Deep Dive into Shadow Work
34:36

What is shadow work? And how can you do it responsibly and effectively?

This episode of Inner Work explores the shadow as a "dark aspect of the personality", in the words of Carl Jung. Your shadows are aspects of yourself that, for whatever reason, you've deemed as unacceptable or shameful. And so you repress these aspects into the subconscious. However, your unexamined and un-integrated shadows will continue to make themselves known and influence your behavior in one way or another.

So, this episode addresses:

  • what is shadow work?
  • secondary and primary shadow archetypes (which do you recognize in yourself?)
  • key principles and suggestions to make your shadow work as effective and transformative as possible
  • how to avoid spiritual bypassing when doing shadow work
  • a 4-step method for doing shadow work as an ongoing practice in your life

Here's the blog post where I outline my 4-step shadow work method, in case you want to refer to that:

AWAKENING: Coming to terms with childhood losses
31:14

This episode of AWAKENING focuses on all kinds of childhood losses, from the seemingly minor to the life-altering. I talk about some of the intangible childhood losses that might still be impacting you today - for instance, the loss of childhood innocence or playfulness if you were forced to grow up too fast.

This episode also defines childhood losses as anything that, ideally, you should've been given as a child but - for whatever reasons - was not provided. Some essential things that were not provided might include a feeling of safety and belonging, comfort, encouragement, the soothing presence of an emotionally stable caregiver, and unconditional support.

I share how I've been coping with some of my own childhood losses (related to moving away from my home country at age 11) and suggest a few practices for you to work through yours.

For example, I mention working with the throat chakra through a guided meditation. You can find that here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwzSOF9GEHo&t=31s

Important note: please seek the professional support of a trauma-informed therapist, healer, or Somatic Experiencing practitioner if you're trying to process childhood trauma and it feels overwhelming. You don't have to do it alone. This is a good resource to find a qualified practitioner:

Inner Work 126: Surrendering and Dropping Ego Attachments with Johnny Guidry
50:35

My guest for this episode, Johnny Guidry, is a speaker, podcaster, and spiritual and career coach focused on helping others awaken to their most authentic and intuitive life. His career progression includes 16 years of learning design and management, human resources, project management, and operations.

Johnny’s current path of spiritual growth has been a decade-long process facilitated by his experiences with alcoholism, compulsions around eating, shopping, and sexual behavior, morbid obesity, social anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Today, Johnny has been sober for over 13 years, has lost 200 lbs, recovered emotional and physical health, is debt free, and most importantly has learned to be still, connect with his highest self, and live by intuition.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • the path of sobriety
  • surrender & self-acceptance as healing practices
  • letting go of self-defense
  • dropping ego attachments
  • reshaping your identity after a spiritual awakening

AWAKENING: What are you bracing against?
26:46

As humans, we sometimes develop a survival or coping mechanism of bracing against - bracing against other people, against pain and suffering, against potential criticism or rejection, against vulnerability, and even against life itself.

As a spiritual and psychological state, bracing serves at least two functions: to push away unpleasant things, and to hold on tightly to the people, things, and relationships we already have in our lives (typically out of fear that you might lose those things in the future).

In this act of bracing, which involves a self-defensive stance, there's a fundamental lack of trust. A lack of trust in yourself, in life, and in your ability to handle life - no matter what arises.

Bracing for a long time can have harmful effects on your entire system, including your body, physical health, mental health, and ability to connect spiritually.

In this episode of AWAKENING, I delve into this coping mechanism of bracing, discuss its long-term consequences and effects, and offer some suggestions to begin softening it.

Inner Work 125: Common Questions and Misconceptions about the Akashic Records
26:38

This episode of Inner Work addresses some common questions and misconceptions about the Akashic Records.

Specifically, I answer these questions:

  • Is there only ONE way, method, or prayer to access the Akashic Records?
  • Aren't the Akashic Records a tool of the third dimension?
  • Where are the Akashic Records located?
  • Why are the Akashic Records accessible to us? What's the ultimate purpose for humanity?
  • Can healing happen spontaneously inside the Records?

AWAKENING: Surrender as a doorway into self-liberation
29:24

Ideally, on the spiritual path we use our triggers and challenges as opportunities to become more conscious and awake. This brand new series, AWAKENING, is our next adventure - and evolution - following my TRIGGERED! series.

Awakening is a continuous, ever-unfolding process and not something we can force, rush, or put on any specific timeline. With this series, we'll continue exploring some of our triggers and challenges while also delving into key spiritual concepts and practices that can help us move through those challenges.

This inaugural episode focuses on SURRENDER:

  • what does surrender really mean, and how can we practice it?
  • how surrender can liberate you from anxiety, ego attachments, codependence, and the tendency to control your life and the lives of others
  • 3 specific examples of surrender from my own life (in career, friendships, and health)
  • surrender as a practice of making friends with WHAT IS and becoming free of resistance

TRIGGERED! When your ego causes you suffering
27:58
Join me for this episode of TRIGGERED! as we explore all things ego. Your ego carries your sense of self, your self-image, the stories you tell and believe about yourself (especially as compared to other people), and your attachments to things like your car, house, relationships, social status, money, etc.

The ego's primary agenda is to make sure you're keeping up appearances, looking good to others, being accepted, and maintaining the status quo. Therefore, the ego is constantly on the lookout for anything that might threaten your sense of identity.

In this episode, we'll explore:

  • what is the ego?
  • the mechanisms the ego uses to try to maintain the status quo and avoid risk & discomfort
  • some of the common lies and illusions your ego might tell you
  • how the ego causes suffering
  • how to help yourself transcend your ego - or at least shift your relationship to it

TRIGGERED! When you have an emotional flashback
24:19

Welcome back to TRIGGERED! New year, new triggers for us to deal with.

In this episode, I talk about the experience of having an emotional flashback. This is when something (or someone) triggers you to regress to a feeling or emotional state from the past, which could be from an earlier age in your current lifetime or even a past life. Topics include:

  • what is an emotional flashback?
  • common triggers that set off an emotional flashback
  • signs & symptoms that you're experiencing an emotional flashback
  • a 3-step process to support yourself and move through an emotional flashback

In this episode, I mention a book by Pete Walker, Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving. I highly recommend this book if you want to explore childhood trauma, complex PTSD, and emotional flashbacks in more depth.

23:52

This is part two in a four-part series on the Tarot suit of Cups. (I highly recommend listening to episode 1 first and then returning to this one, if you haven't already! The episodes build on each other in some ways.)

In this installment, join me for an exploration of:

  • the 4 of Cups as a card of apathy, restlessness, and boredom - and how to shift out of this state to receive help and inspiration from the Universe
  • the consequences of forgetting to "look up" to the heavens and getting caught up in day-to-day life
  • the 5 of Cups as a card of deep, sometimes paralyzing grief and disconnection from Spirit

TRIGGERED! When you're stuck in perfectionism or hypervigilance
18:59

Perfectionism and hypervigilance are often maladaptive ways in which we've learned to stay safe in the world (or to at least try to stay safe). They're also patterns that we sometimes acquire in response to trauma, and to prevent a similar trauma or hurtful experience from happening again.

The problem with these patterns is that they keep you so limited, living a tightly controlled life as you try to do everything perfectly - to BE perfect - and avoid making any mistakes.

Some of the core symptoms of being stuck in perfectionism and hypervigilance include:

  • difficulty settling down after activity and fully relaxing (especially if the activity is stressful or highly stimulating)
  • feeling creatively drained or blocked ("if it's not going to be perfect, I'm not even gonna try" syndrome)
  • constantly bracing yourself for the other shoe to drop
  • being stuck in hyper-activity, hyper-productivity, and ruminating thoughts
  • harsh inner critic and constant self-evaluation (and paralyzing fear of others' criticism!)
  • feeling constantly rushed and like there's not enough time in the day

In this episode, I introduce my brand new course 21 Days to Heal Perfectionism & Hypervigilance and lay out the 3 most important steps in releasing these patterns so you can reclaim your creativity, peace, freedom, and sense of well-being in the world.

Inner Work 120: The Tarot Cups, Pt. 1. Your Relationships with the Divine, Yourself, and Other People
24:10

Due to overwhelming demand following my series on the Tarot Swords, I'm happy to present this four-part series on another Tarot suit: the Cups.

In this first installment of four episodes, I lay the groundwork for taking you through a deeper, psychospiritual understanding of the suit of Cups. Join me for a discussion of:

- the suit of Cups as representing a primarily feminine energy (in contrast, particularly, to the very phallic suit of Swords)

- how the suit of Cups challenges us to embody the energies of surrendering, flexibility, flow, and receptivity

- the Ace of Cups as a card of total Divine connection and spiritual solace

- the 2 of Cups as a card for healing dysfunctional relationship patterns, especially unequal power dynamics in romantic relationships

- the 3 of Cups as a card that challenges us to overcome interpersonal trauma so we can celebrate ourselves and each other, particularly in the context of female friendship

I'll be referring to the Rider Waite Smith deck if you want to follow along with the imagery and specific details on the cards.

TRIGGERED! When the holidays feel stressful or draining
17:36

Aaah, the holidays... a magical time of gathering with loved ones and celebrating our blessings. That is, ideally!

For many people, the holidays can be a lot more stressful, draining, or anxiety-inducing than the picture-perfect image of a loving family gathered around a fancy table. The holidays - whichever ones you choose to celebrate - can bring up mixed emotions or fill you with anticipatory dread, worry, and stress.

In this special holiday edition of TRIGGERED!, I talk about:

- the importance of breaking with old traditions that feel draining, confining, or dysfunctional

- creating your own traditions that feel more aligned and peaceful

- reinforcing boundaries with family members during the holidays

- liberating yourself from burdensome family expectations and using the holidays as an opportunity to practice saying NO

- ways to protect yourself energetically & physically if you choose to gather with family

You might find this resource helpful if you do get triggered at some point during the holidays. I created a guide on 10 Ways to Get Untriggered Quickly, which you can download here:

TRIGGERED! When you use whatever you can to escape reality
21:54

Have you found yourself reaching for whatever it is you can - a substance, experience, behavior, or whatever else - to escape the present moment?

Yup, I've done that too. Many times!

This episode of TRIGGERED! is, in many ways, a continuation of my episode on addictions and compulsive behavior. But this time we're focusing on the impulse to "check out", to not be here, to not be in your body, to escape reality. Join me for a discussion of:

- where the impulse to check out or escape comes from (and how it relates to being highly sensitive)

- why and how this impulse drives us to engage in self-destructive or harmful behaviors

- why it's important to NOT demonize or punish yourself for wanting to escape

- recognizing that your addictions and attachments to the things, substances, and behaviors you use to check out are not happening in a vacuum; there are entire industries invested in keeping you addicted (and how touching into your sacred anger about this can help in breaking those attachments)

  • what happens at a physical and cellular level when you "ascend" spiritually
  • the benefits and positive transformations that arise out of spiritual ascension
  • some of the potential physical symptoms of ascension, and how you can best deal with them
  • the importance of taking ownership of your healing

TRIGGERED! When someone tells you how to live your life
22:57

Ever found yourself in a situation where someone tried to tell you how to live your life? Maybe they tried to tell you what you should eat, or what you shouldn't eat, or how you should speak or behave, or how you should raise your kids, or how you should dress. This can bring up all kinds of emotions and feel really triggering.

In this episode, I talk about:

- how to deal with well-intentioned (or not so well-intentioned) people trying to tell you how to live

- the importance of working through our own tendencies to tell others how to live (because we're not perfect either!)

- how to deal with feelings of being judged or criticized

- my personal story with veganism and how this created a rift in my family

- the importance of releasing energetic hooks and cords connecting you to people who've tried to control or manipulate you

TRIGGERED! When you can't stop eating sugar (or engaging in some other addictive behavior)
20:21

"Addictions always originate in pain, whether felt openly or hidden in the unconscious." - Dr. Gabor Mate

This episode of TRIGGERED! takes on the topic of addictive behaviors through my own personal experience with food and sugar addiction. Join me for a discussion of:

- what fuels us to engage in addictive behaviors even when we know they're harming us

- the importance of not making an addiction or addictive substance the enemy

- how the addictive cycle keeps us stuck in a loop of obsessive thinking and robs us of peace, vitality, and energy

- softening addictive tendencies by understanding WHY and HOW you've used them as a coping mechanism or as a response to trauma

- for sugar addiction in particular, the importance of cultivating more "sweetness" and self-compassion in your daily life

I mention a number of resources throughout the episode. Please explore these based on your own needs and interests:

TRIGGERED! When you have difficulty trusting your intuition
20:20

Your intuition is your inner guidance system and inner GPS. As such, it gives you information about the people, places, and situations that are aligned with you - as well as the people, places, and situations that are not. Through this guidance, you can decide what to move towards to and what to move away from.

In this episode of TRIGGERED!, I address the important topic of being able to trust your intuition and intuitive nudges. Specific themes include:

  • How your trust in your own intuition can become corroded over time for a variety of reasons (for example: if it was unsafe to trust in your feelings and perceptions growing up, if you've been privileging your head and logical thinking over your heart and intuition, or if you feel unworthy of receiving clear information from your Guides)
  • The intuitive channels through which you receive information and guidance
  • Your body as a vehicle of divine communication
  • 6 specific blocks that make it hard to trust your intuition and the messages that come through (and how to work with each one)

In the episode, I mention this article on the 5 clairs: https://josephinehardman.com/how-to-develop-your-intuition-with-the-5-clairs/

Inner Work 111: The Tarot Swords, Pt. 1. Beginner's Mind, the Illusion of Separation, and Healing Heart Trauma
20:53

This is the inaugural episode in a four-part series exploring the Tarot Swords in depth. Join me as we journey through the Swords, from the Ace to the King, and derive important lessons from this suit.

This first episode covers:

  • an overview of the Swords as a suit
  • how the journey through the Swords is a cautionary tale about the undisciplined ego mind
  • how this suit warns us about the dangers of privileging head over heart
  • the suit's double-edged nature, which is reflective of the mind as a double-edged "tool"
  • how we sometimes develop a coping mechanism of retreating into the head to avoid our feelings or suppress heart trauma

I also dive into the Ace of Swords, 2 of Swords, and 3 of Swords to provide detailed interpretations of each card.

TRIGGERED! When you're in a one-sided friendship
16:43

Being in a one-sided friendship can be triggering (and exhausting!). This episode responds to a listener email by exploring what happens when you give your full support and attention to a friend, but they don't give you a reciprocal exchange of energy and presence. Our listener was triggered, specifically, when a friend would multitask, check their phone, or otherwise get distracted during their interactions (particularly when it was time for our listener to share and be heard).

In the episode, I also talk about:

  • how being highly sensitive can make us feel more upset or rejected when friends don't seem to be fully present with us
  • the importance of speaking up for your needs in friendships & relationships (and how to do so)
  • the valuable lesson of releasing one-sided friendships

TRIGGERED! When someone tries to prove you wrong
15:52

Feeling criticized or called out on something can feel so uncomfortable. So triggering! This episode investigates what happens to us when someone tries to prove us "wrong" - whether they're responding to something we've created, something we've said or done, or a personal opinion.

I offer two specific, grounding questions to stay as centered as you can and evaluate the criticism you receive as peacefully and openly as possible. I also touch on cases or situations where it might be ok to evalute that criticism critically and detach from it if it's coming from a hostile or close-minded place.

An important point of this episode is that being called out on something - or when someone tries to prove you wrong - can be an excellent opportunity for growth, learning, and examining your own beliefs.

In response to a listener question, this episode explores what happens when you're trying to manifest something and it just isn't showing up in your life (or isn't manifesting quickly enough). This can give rise to feelings of worry, fear, urgency, frustration, and hopelessness. I talk about what to do with those feelings and also cover these topics:

- a common trap or misconception in the law of attraction

- how you can manifest what you want even with some fear or doubt

Inner Work 108: Emotional Labor (and the Emotional Work of Being a Healer)
30:54

What is emotional labor? How do you know when you're doing it? And what are the costs and consequences associated with that labor?

Join me for an in-depth exploration of emotional labor, what it is, and how to recognize when you're doing it (and why you're doing it). In this episode, I offer specific examples of emotional labor across three spaces: at home, in relationships, and in your work as a healer or service-based provider.

As healers, we must engage in particular kinds of emotional labor when we work with clients individually or in group settings. As we run through the different types of emotional labor you might be doing in your life and work, I invite you to notice which of these you tend to engage in the most... and which are most draining for you. What kind of emotional labor are you doing simply out of a sense of obligation, family expectations, or social conditioning? Are you doing emotional labor to please others or avoid conflict? If so, how can you shift that pattern?

In this episode, I announced my Akashic Records Level 1 Training Course. You can explore that here:

TRIGGERED! When you can't get out of your head
20:37

This episode is going out to my fellow overthinkers! Do you tend to get trapped inside your head, caught in repetitive or intrusive thinking patterns? Do you overanalyze everything to death? Do you find it challenging to drop down into your body and be in the space of your heart?

Join me as we explore the possible reasons why you might have developed this tendency to "retreat" into the head as a safety or coping mechanism. In this episode, I define the difference between being in your head (the home of your rational and ego mind) versus being in your heart (the home of your divine mind and spirit). I also talk about what you can do to begin shifting from the head into the heart.

TRIGGERED! When you're having a hard time and someone tells you to just "be positive"
16:04

Has anyone ever told you to just "be positive" or "think positive" while you were in the midst of a crisis, having a challenge, or experiencing intense emotions? Did this make you want to rip that person's head off? Yup, I've been there too!

In this episode of TRIGGERED!, I talk about the experience of being told to just "be positive" and how this can make you feel triggered, alone, angry, or dismissed. This may also trigger the feeling that your experience or emotions are being minimized.

I also cover, briefly, the sometimes endemic tendency in the spiritual community towards "toxic positivity" - the idea that everything is, or should, be ok if you just "stay positive" and keep your vibes high.

TRIGGERED! When you abandon or betray yourself
16:13

Self-abandonment is really common in our culture. It can take many different forms, but it’s often related to denying or suppressing your own needs to act in ways that are deemed acceptable by others.

Our western culture frequently encourages us to move towards this place of self-denial, suppression, and twisting ourselves to fit external expectations and demands. Part of this has to do with being affable, with not creating conflict, with being perceived as a helpful and productive and easygoing person.

In this episode of Triggered, we explore what it means to abandon or betray yourself. I run through some specific examples of self-abandonment and offer suggestions for reclaiming your self-worth and becoming your own ally and advocate.

TRIGGERED! When you feel shame about being too sensitive
18:16

This episode of TRIGGERED! is going out to my fellow highly sensitive people and empaths. Do you sometimes (still) get triggered when you feel you're "too sensitive", or if someone else makes you feel that you are, or if you even have the slightest inkling that someone might be perceiving you that way? Yup, me too!

Especially if you grew up hearing that you're too sensitive, or you need to grow a thicker skin, or you take things too personally, you might have developed a sense of shame about your sensitivity. In this episode, we dive into the experience of feeling shame about our heightened sensitivity and what we can do with that shame when it gets triggered.

To connect with me directly or share your own triggers so we can work through them together, please head over to www.josephinehardman.com or send an email to me@josephinehardman.com

Inner Work 103: Healing Past Life Trauma
25:26

It's very likely that you've lived lifetimes as a human before your current life. Some of the painful, traumatizing, or challenging experiences from your past lives might still remain unresolved. We can think of past life trauma in a number of different ways – for example, we have all experienced both individual and collective trauma in past lives.

Trauma from your past lives, if it remains unresolved, tends to become embedded somewhere in your energy field. You also hold memories of that trauma at a cellular level. This is why you can sometimes experience not only emotional but also physical symptoms related to past life trauma.

In this episode, I delve into the topic of past life trauma and offer a few specific indicators or signs that your current challenges - whether emotional, physical, spiritual, or relational - might be related to past life issues. I also discuss how the Akashic Records are one of the most ideal tools for healing this kind of trauma.

TRIGGERED! When the same old issue shows up in your life again
19:38

This episode of TRIGGERED! is about those moments when the "same old" issue shows up in your life... yet again. This could be an issue or pattern (or even physical symptom) you've faced many times before. Sometimes, it feels like it goes into "remission" or like you've finally moved beyond it, but then it pops up again when you least expect it. Gah! Having a human experience can be so tough.

I offer some real talk on how to face these old demons again when they pop up. The major focus of the episode is on how to move through the intense feelings that can come up in these moments: shame, anger, frustration, hopelessness, discouragement, sometimes even despair.

I also lay out 4 specific suggestions for helping yourself face the same old issue, pattern, or symptom more compassionately and productively when it does show up.

Inner Work 102: An Inside Look into an Akashic Records Healing Session
01:03:12

For this special episode of Inner Work, I had the privilege of working with a respected friend, Thomas the Hermit, as we journeyed into his Akashic Records and then recorded a debrief of the experience. You will hear Thomas speak about the session candidly - what happened, what we saw and received from the Records, and how the information helped him.

Our conversation provides an inside look into an Akashic Records Healing Session. If you've ever wondered how this modality can help you accelerate your healing, overcome dysfunctional patterns, and reconnect to the highest-level version of yourself (i.e., your Higher Self, Soul, Divine Self), this episode will shed some light on all of that. It also provides a case study of how the Akashic Records can be accessed - and the kinds of information that can come through - with the help of a trained reader.

TRIGGERED! When people cross or disrespect your boundaries
17:02

Boundaries! A perpetually hot issue in the spiritual and healing worlds. Boundaries are something we must all continually work on while we're incarnated in human bodies. It's so important to have clear and healthy boundaries to delineate where you end and where someone else begins. This can help you stay true to your core needs and desires instead of losing your sense of self in relationships or in other people.

In this episode, I respond to a listener email about one of her triggers - when people try to tell her what to do and when people cross her boundaries.

Join me for this discussion as we delve into the "freeze" response that can habitually get triggered when others disrespect or test your boundaries, especially if you grew up with poor boundaries or parents/caregivers who were unable to model healthy boundary-setting.

I also talk about "sacred anger" and how reawakening this energy within you can lead to powerful healing and help you stand your ground - no matter where you are, who you're with, or what's being asked of you.

Inner Work 101: Ancestral Healing with Lauren McGill (Woman of Rivers)
01:02:12

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the deeply soulful, compassionate, and knowledgeable Lauren McGill (Woman of Rivers). Lauren is a spiritualist, diviner, and root worker living in New Orleans. In her work as Woman of Rivers, she utilizes the Tarot for insight, growth, and healing as she helps her clients release old patterns and powerfully connect with their ancestors.

To extend the scope of her work, Lauren is currently studying Art Therapy, a practice she intends to integrate with ancestral healing modalities of breathwork and herbal medicine making.

In this interview, we talk about ancestral healing: what it is, why it's important, and where you can start. We also chat about Lauren's healing journey and how water (and fluidity!) has been an essential element in both her business and private life.

TRIGGERED! When you feel excluded, rejected, or like an outcast
17:31

This episode of TRIGGERED! explores the issue of feeling excluded, rejected, or like an "alien" or outcast. (Have you been there? Me too!) I respond to a listener's message about this and dive into the root of these painful feelings that can get activated whenever you feel left out or overlooked.

Join me as we explore why we get triggered when we feel unseen or excluded and what we can do to soothe or relate differently to this trigger. We'll also go back in time to locate your "primary rejection" -- that first conscious memory of being rejected, excluded, unseen, or mocked simply for being who you are. Healing that core wound of rejection and compassionately holding the part of you that's still suffering because of it is the key to releasing this trigger.

I'd love to hear your feedback on this episode! Please email me any time at me@josephinehardman.com . I would also love to hear about your own triggers so we can work through them together.

Inner Work 100: Gratitude
23:33

To celebrate Inner Work's 100th episode, join me for an interactive gratitude experience. This episode is ALL about gratitude and giving thanks!

We'll do a guided meditation together to tune into your heart and cultivate loving-kindness within your whole body and outwardly towards your home, community, and the world.

I'll also give you a set of 7 journaling prompts to go deeper into your gratitude practice (or start one!), as well as 3 gratitude challenges for which you can take action starting today.

The goal of this episode is to move all aspects of yourself - your mind, body, and spirit - towards the expansive experience of feeling gratitude. As Rumi says, we must wear gratitude "like a warm cloak", for it will fill our lives with warmth, resilience, and peace.

TRIGGERED! When you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in your body
15:53

Being in a human, physical body can be very triggering at times. It can feel dense, unsafe, or uncomfortable to be in a body. This sometimes leads us to try to escape the body through coping mechanisms like overeating, undereating, drinking too much, checking out from reality, or spiritual bypassing.

It can also feel unsafe to be in your body if you've experienced trauma of any kind in this lifetime. In this episode, I address a few different forms of trauma you might have experienced that could still be affecting your ability to feel grounded and embodied. I also offer two practices to begin healing your relationship to your body.

Inner Work 099: Healing Your Relationship to Time
28:12

Having a dysfunctional relationship to time can make it difficult to stay present and grounded in each moment. In this episode, I explore the modern syndrome called "hurry sickness", which tends to manifest in the following ways:

- a feeling of always trying to beat the clock (and always keeping an eye on the clock)
- a feeling of never having enough hours in the day
- the compulsion to do more and more in less and less time
- inability to relax at the end of the day or even when you're away from work
- frustration, irritability, anxiety, and stress regarding time and deadlines
- physical symptoms such as muscle aches, tension headaches, insomnia, and restlessness in the body

After examining the different ways in which "hurry sickness" might be showing up in your life, we'll dive into practical and spiritual approaches to heal your relationship to time. Applying the suggestions in this episode will help you feel more expansive, less hurried, and anchored in the present moment.

TRIGGERED! When you compare yourself to others (and feel inadequate or not good enough)
17:00

A very common trigger that most of us experience is comparing ourselves to others and then feeling worse about ourselves. This is also called "compare & despair", and it can bring up intense feelings of inadequacy, not being good enough, and impostor syndrome.

In this episode, I dive into this particular trigger and the different ways in which it might be showing up in your life. I share what has helped me become un-triggered and shift my experience with "compare & despair" into a doorway for expansion and for identifying my true desires.

I also delve into the shadow side of comparing ourselves to others and offer suggestions for working with that shadow.

TRIGGERED! When you feel unheard or misunderstood
14:14

Today, we begin with a powerful quote from Victor Frankl: "Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

These words remind us that we don't have to respond reactively to life. That we can notice and work with our triggers to diminish our knee-jerk reactions, which can often cause suffering for ourselves and/or others.

In this episode, I answer a listener email about a specific triggering situation: when you feel unheard or misunderstood in the context of an intimate relationship (or friendship). I share what I have found useful in these situations. I also encourage you to examine past relationship dynamics - including your relationships with your parents - so you can take stock of the unhealed or core wounds you bring with you into your interactions with people now.

These are unique, truthful, and healing books that I've returned to over and over again as I've walked my own spiritual path. I hope you'll find a title that resonates with you and that can help you kick 2021 off with renewed hope, clarity, and inspiration.

I run through each of these books and describe their main purpose, who they're meant for, what makes them unique, and why they're important for those of us on the spiritual path.

Here's the list of books included in this episode:

Ram Dass - Grist for the Mill
Clarissa Pinkola Estes - Women Who Run With the Wolves
Penney Peirce - The Intuitive Way
Lama Tsultrim Allione - Feeding Your Demons
Jean Shinoda Bolen - Goddesses in Everywoman
Benebell Wen - Holistic Tarot

TRIGGERED! When your brain won't let you meditate
17:54

You finally find a quiet moment to meditate, you sit down, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths... and your brain is off to the races. The ego mind can often get in the way of your meditation practice by pulling you in many different directions.

In this mini-episode, I explore the most common interference patterns used by the brain and ego mind when you try to meditate. I also share a few journaling or reflection prompts so you can explore the idea of surrendering, letting go of control, and creating more space between you and your ego mind.

Additionally, I offer some alternative practices if sitting still in complete silence is too unbearable for you. Sometimes this can be a sign that you're tapping into "frozen" or unresolved trauma, so it's important to be mindful of what's happening in your body and take a more gradual approach to meditation.

If this episode is helpful for you, please consider leaving a rating or review on Apple Podcasts - or, better yet, telling a friend about the podcast!

01:00:10

My guest for this episode, Juanita Benedicto, works full-time as a consulting astrologer and tarot reader in Central Mexico. Her path to astrology has been very colorful. She's worked in salmon restoration in the streams of Northern California and as a librarian at University of Oregon. TRIGGERED! When you put yourself out there and someone criticizes you
12:59

Becoming less reactive is an important goal on your path of healing and spiritual awakening. To respond to situations from a place of wisdom, higher truth, and confidence – instead of responding out of fear, worry, anger, or any kind of knee-jerk reaction.

This goal of becoming less reactive – and therefore becoming more centered and grounded in the present moment – is what inspired this new experimental series of mini-episodes, which I’m calling TRIGGERED! (with an exclamation point because when you get triggered, it can be pretty intense). Through these episodes, I also want to bring some levity and lightness to the process of spiritual development, which can sometimes really challenge you.

In this first mini-episode, we’ll be working with what happens (and what to do) when you put yourself out there and someone criticizes you. This topic was inspired by one of my own triggers, so this episode includes a personal anecdote. I then shift to the bigger picture and some specific takeaways as you strive to put yourself out there as well.

I'd love for this series to be a dialogue between you and me, so please send me your triggers (as you become aware of them) via email: me@josephinehardman.com

40:56

As a healing tool, the Akashic Records can help you navigate uncertainty in our modern times, make more informed and intentional choices, release dysfunctional patterns, and reconnect you to a sense of purpose and meaning in your life. In this episode, I take you deeper into the Akashic Records to deliver some collective messages from the Record Keepers.

These messages include guidance about what to focus on, what to prioritize right now, and potential areas for deeper healing in your life. For example, the Record Keepers speak about letting go of the need for external validation, the importance of not interfering in others' healing processes, and the practice of unhooking yourself from painful thought forms.

Inner Work 093: The Practice of Shifting to a Higher Truth
30:07

As spiritual beings in human bodies, we can sometimes get caught up in the illusion of 3D reality. Bills must be paid, kids must be driven to school (or educated at home during a pandemic!), cars must be repaired, and dinner must be cooked. We also have to interact with others and navigate a chaotic world. In this process, we can get lost in material reality and forget to stay connected to a Higher Perspective.

In this episode, I talk about how you can disengage from the illusions of 3D reality and reach for the higher truth of any situation or experience. This requires you to reconnect to Divine Source over and over again. Finding the higher truth means becoming more aware of what your Soul would say about any situation or challenge you're facing. As you do this, you expand your perspective and shift to a more hopeful, joyful, supported, and empowered state.

Inner Work 092: The Healing Path as a Labyrinth
27:41

In the words of Joseph Campbell on the labyrinth as a mythological symbol:

"We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us — the labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world."

In this episode, I explore the labyrinth as a metaphor for the healing path, with its winding detours, distractions, obstacles, and victories along the way.

I talk about some of the key places and figures you'll encounter inside the labyrinth including the Dead End, the False Teacher, the Spiritual Advisor, and the Sanctuary.

Join me for this traversal through the labyrinth -- which we ultimately never walk alone.

Inner Work 091: Dealing with Setbacks on Your Healing Path
24:37

Expecting the healing path to move in a linear fashion can set you up for frustration and disappointment. A more accurate metaphor for the healing path is a spiral or labyrinth, with lots of detours, roadblocks, and shadows that come up to be healed along the way.

In this episode, I share specific tips for dealing with setbacks on your healing path -- starting with the importance of redefining the word "setback" itself. This discussion is also helpful if you're experiencing a healing crisis or feeling a sense of dejection, confusion, impatience, or frustration with where you are on your healing journey.

Do you often find yourself trying to please everyone to keep the peace? Does conflict - or even the idea of conflict or disagreement - send you into a tailspin? Do you rely on others' praise and approval to feel ok about yourself?

If so, you might be stuck in a pattern of people pleasing and approval addiction. In this episode, I talk about where these patterns and behaviors often originate and how early childhood conditioning can set you up to people please as an adult. I also discuss the Fawn Response, the automatic response to trauma beyond fight, flight, or freeze. 32:07

It's so important to have clear boundaries in your business as a healer, lightworker, or spiritual entrepreneur. A lack of boundaries can leave you feeling exhausted and burnt out. It can also put your business, health, energy, and sanity in jeopardy. In this episode, I cover some of the most common pitfalls in setting boundaries in your spiritual business and offer suggestions on how to enforce healthy boundaries. We'll also talk about how some of these patterns of poor boundaries leak out into other areas of your life.

Inner Work 086: Deep Lessons from The Hierophant
27:57

The Hierophant is sometimes one of the least liked cards in the Tarot decks -- or at least a card that many people have trouble connecting with. The Hierophant can represent patriarchy, authority, gatekeeping, organized religion, and conformism. But, in this episode, I share how we can reclaim The Hierophant for our modern times, derive powerful healing lessons from it, and use it to step into your inner authority and power.

Inner Work 084: Making Yourself Magnetic to Your Ideal Clients
37:40

Are you a healer or spiritual entrepreneur trying to grow your business and get more clients? This episode is for you if you've connected to your Divine Mission and that Mission includes healing, being of service, transmuting energy, anchoring light, or serving as a catalyst for transformation.

In this episode, I propose a new way of doing marketing that does NOT revolve around hustling, endless to-do lists, tricking, high-pressure sales tactics, or creating a false sense of urgency. Instead, as healers, we must think about marketing as making ourselves MAGNETIC to our ideal clients using ethical, aligned, powerful marketing strategies in full integrity with our spiritual values. It's time to elevate our marketing models and no longer do "business as usual."

Inner Work 082: The Path of the Spiritual Entrepreneur
35:10

I call the path of the spiritual entrepreneur an "incubator for accelerated healing." This is because ALL of your stuff comes up on this path: your fears, resistance, triggers, self-doubt, self-sabotage, old wounds. And more!

This episode takes a behind-the-scenes look at the path of the spiritual entrepreneur and examines some of the intense fears and triggers that come up along the way. I draw some parallels between this path and the Fool's Journey (in Tarot), given that running your own spiritual business requires tremendous amounts of faith, trust, and the ability to take risks.

I also share why I think it's so important to become your own boss and create your own economy in light of recent world events.

Inner Work 075: Listening to the Voice of Your Divine Genius (Instead of the Voice of Fear)
29:26

I'm sure you're familiar with the voice of fear within you (we all have it). This is the voice that tells you you're not good enough, things will never work out for you, you'll never make enough money, you're stupid, it's not worth trying anything new, etc, etc. (Such a tyrant!)

But do you also recognize within yourself the voice of Divine Genius? This voice is also referred to as the voice of Higher Self, the voice of your soul, your inner knowing, your inner Goddess.

In this episode, I talk about the INNER CONFLICT that's created when the voice of Divine Genius and the voice of fear within you are locked in a struggle. I also offer advice on how to turn up the volume on your voice of Divine Genius so you can move beyond old patterns, release your fear, and go for the things you actually want.

Inner Work 064: Being in the Mystery Between Manifestations
36:38

There's always a gap between your desire and the manifested outcome of that desire -- we may call this the "mystery" between manifestations. As humans, we often find it challenging to reside in this mystery, which is why we give up on our deepest desires before they've had a chance to manifest. In this episode, we dive right into the mystery and I offer some strategies to become more comfortable with it. Ultimately, being comfortable with the mystery will allow you to call in what you want faster and with less resistance than ever before.

As humans, it's almost impossible for us not to feel emotions like anger, fear, resentment, frustration, and disappointment in certain situations. These are low frequency emotions because they emit and attract lower vibrations than emotions like love, excitement, and joy. In this episode, I talk about how you can deal with low frequency emotions when you feel them, particularly in relationships. Inner Work 057: Spiritual Bypassing
28:37

Robert Augustus Masters defines the term "spiritual bypassing" as a collection of behaviors and beliefs through which we use spirituality to avoid life. Some of these behaviors include anger-phobia, boundaries that are too strict or too porous, emotional numbing, and over-detachment from life.

When we engage in spiritual bypassing, we trick ourselves into believing that we're healing and working through deep issues, but we're actually only staying on the surface of what's really going. In this episode, I invite you to explore the key behaviors of spiritual bypassing so you can move beyond them into deeper, more transformative, and long-lasting healing.

I share my favorite tips and strategies for navigating this tricky subject!

Inner Work 048: How You Can Do More Soul-Aligned Work
40:11

Episode 48 of Inner Work features a discussion of soul-aligned work: what it is, how we can define it, how you know when you're doing it, and how can you start doing more of it right now. (No matter where you are in terms of your profession or job -- you can begin anywhere!) I also talk about the characteristics of soul-deadening work, which is the opposite of soul-aligned work, and how it drains you and keeps you unfulfilled. Ready to take the plunge and shift from an old paradigm of "hard work" and "paying your dues" to a new paradigm of "soul-aligned work" and doing what sets your soul on fire? Then join me for this conversation!

Purefield Radio 025: The Highly Sensitive Empath
32:51

Empaths are "emotional sponges who absorb both the joy and stress of the world," according to psychologist Dr. Judith Orloff. Growing up as an empath, you may have frequently heard that you needed to "grow a thicker skin," "not take things so personally," and "not be so sensitive." In this episode, I explore life as an empath and how we can nurture our sensitivity to overcome challenges and use our gifts to heal ourselves and others. I also investigate the difference between a highly sensitive person (HSP) and an empath, highlighting the areas where these two categories overlap.

During the episode, I mention Dr. Judith Orloff's book The Empath's Survival Guide. (I highly recommend it if you identify as an empath and have never read it!)

Dr. Elaine Aron's book The Highly Sensitive Person is another great title to add to your reading list. Thank you so much for listening!

Purefield Radio 024: Epigenetics and the Work of Dr. Joe Dispenza
23:12

Epigenetics is the "study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself." To put it in simpler terms, the field of epigenetics is helping us understand that our genes are affected by the external environment, including what we eat, drink, think, feel, and do. We are not destined to a certain genetic fate due to our family history or whatever happened to our parents or grandparents. In this episode of Purefield Radio, I get into some of the science of epigenetics through the work of Joe Dispenza, a pioneering author, doctor, and mystic. Learn precisely how your genes are influenced by the external environment and how you can start turning off genes for disease and turning on genes for health and abundance.

Purefield Radio 022: The Human Energy System and Your Health
34:24

Join me for a discussion of the 8 major energy centers (or "chakras") in your human energy field. I discuss each center's role, associated body parts and organs, and potential dysfunctions. I also offer specific healing techniques and affirmations to bring each chakra back into balance and health. During the episode, I refer to Barbara Brennan's book Hands of Light. Get your own copy here.

*Note: following Brennan's understanding of the human energy system, I associate the pituitary gland with the third eye chakra and the pineal gland with the crown chakra. These associations are sometimes reversed in newer studies of the chakra system (pineal with third eye and pituitary with crown chakra).

Purefield Transmission: On Victimhood and Playing Small
21:52

The Akashic Records are a tool for accessing higher guidance and universal wisdom. Since Josephine is a trained Akashic Record reader, she decided to open up the Records and begin asking for specific messages for our listeners and Purefield community. This is the first message (or "Purefield Transmission," to distinguish these episodes from our regular ones). The topics are victimhood and playing small, which are corrosive and addictive tendencies in our human society. Why do we identify with and hold on to victim roles? Why do we relate to others based on misery and lack rather than success and abundance? Why do we re-live the trauma of the past in our daily life experiences? Josephine explores these issues -- and more -- through the infinite wisdom of the Records.

If you're unfamiliar with the Akashic Records, go here for a detailed explanation.

Purefield Radio 009: Money (and Spirituality)
54:43

Can you be a spiritual, highly evolved being and still make money? How do you shift your mindset from poverty or scarcity to abundance? We cover these questions and more in Purefield Radio's ninth episode. We also delve deeply into our personal stories, attitudes, and beliefs regarding money and financial well-being.

This episode offers practical techniques and exercises for getting into greater alignment with your infinite abundance and financial freedom. We discuss the powerful value in rewriting the stories you tell about yourself and money, investigating your inherited attitudes and beliefs about money, and using the Law of Attraction to shift your mindset and your vibration.

"By softening your attention to the things that are going wrong, and by beginning to tell stories that lean more in the direction of what you want instead of in the direction of what you've got, your vibration will shift, your point of attraction will shift, and you will get different results." - Abraham Hicks, Money and the Law of Attraction

Purefield Radio 008: Boundaries
41:25

Boundaries help us delineate where we end and where we begin in relation to other people and to the external world. Boundaries also help us express who we are, the kinds of behavior we will accept, and the ways in which we wish to be treated. In this episode, we contemplate the usefulness of boundaries in social and personal relationships and even within ourselves (i.e. "internal" boundaries). We discuss some of the symptoms of inadequate boundary-setting and offer advice on creating and following through with healthy, loving, and respectful boundaries. For further resources on this episode's topic, check out the following links:
