The culmination of that work is his longtime passion project Surge Sanctuary, which houses rescued animals on a vast 18 acre property. Most recently, Ed has published his first book This is Vegan Propaganda (And Other Lies the Meat Industry Tells You), which presents an indisputable case for veganism. This is a book that is as much for non-vegans as it is for those who already lead a vegan lifestyle, empowering them to talk more confidently about veganism with the non-vegans in their life. The book explores the effects of animal farming across the globe and how they are rooted in a number of factors that have created our current system. "We bought this pandemic on ourselves" | Jane Goodall - Episode 76
00:33:52
Today we are delighted to welcome the legendary Dame Jane Goodall. A leading ethologist, conservationist, anthropologist and activist, Jane Goodall has been a beacon for the scientific and conservation community for decades. Her groundbreaking research and observations on chimpanzee behaviour at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania began as early as the 1960s. In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), which carries on the Gombe research while also advocating for the protection of their natural habitats and spearheading innovative, community-centered conservation programs in Africa. Jane Goodall’s activist work extends into raising awareness for the lives and wellbeing of all animals. She has campaigned for the ethical treatment of animals and has spoken against cruel and inhumane practices and medical testing on animals. Jane Goodall’s latest book The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, co-authored with bestselling author of The Book of Joy Douglas Abrams, was published at the end of last year. With a lifetime’s worth of research and stories about our relationship to nature, the authors delve into the complex relationship that humankind has with the planet we inhabit. The book highlights the ways in which we can redefine that relationship by discovering and embracing hope in the face of the urgent climate crisis. In 2021, she also was awarded the Templeton Prize, and she currently continues to write and teach on conservation issues. We are beyond thrilled to have sat down with Jane Goodall for this enlightening conversation, discussing animal suffering, climate change, and the most powerful asset in our toolkit – hope.

Originally from Mexico, Mauricio’s journey began first with studying nutrition before deciding to continue onto a medical degree in the US, where he is currently a resident at the Metropolitan hospital in New York. During his studies, he came to realize how little attention is paid to nutrition as part of a more holistic view on health and wellness, which pushed him to switch to a plant-based diet himself and fill the gap he identified between nutrition and medicine. Through his platform Mauricio teaches others how to adopt a healthy plant-based diet and change their lives for the better. As the founder of the first ever plant-based medical immersion program in Latin America, he educates other people including physicians and nutritionists on the health benefits of having a vegan diet and the science behind it. His YouTube channel also reaches thousands of people, inspiring people in Latin American countries and all around the world to make a positive change in their lives. The simple idea of food as medicine is the guiding principle of what Mauricio teaches, making the plant-based lifestyle a question of personal health and wellbeing. Exclusive Seaspiracy Documentary Director Interview with Ali & Lucy Tabrizi / Episode 60
00:55:49
Hi Plant Friends, and welcome to a very special episode. Today's show is hosted by PBN Founder Klaus Mitchell. Husband and wife Ali and Lucy Tabrizi are the filmmakers behind the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy - which uncovers the horrors of modern industrial fishing. The film features human impacts on marine life such as plastic marine debris, ghost nets and overfishing around the world. The documentary was one of the top ten most-watched films on Netflix in several countries on the week of its release and generated significant traction on social media. According to the United Nations FAO around 87 percent of the world’s fish populations are ‘fully fished’ or ‘overfished’. Nearly a third of edible fish populations have declined by 90 percent. That same study says that if biodiversity continues to decline, the marine environment will not be able to sustain our way of life. Indeed it may not be able to sustain our lives at all. The global fishing industry has more than doubled in capacity since 1950. It’s now so huge it can’t help but destroy our oceans. What Ali and Lucy discovered whilst making Seaspiracy was truly shocking: Fishing has wiped out 90 percent of the world’s large fish. More than 300,000 dolphins, whales and porpoises are killed by fishing operations every year. More than $35 billion is paid in subsidies to industrial fishing every year. Fishing kills 30,000 sharks EVERY HOUR. Ali and Lucy sat down with Klaus Mitchell from Plant Based News to talk about some of the questions they’ve faced, some of the criticisms, and to go through some behind-the-scenes snippets from the Seaspiracy documentary. Since its release in March 2021, Seaspiracy has garnered many reviews worldwide. It soon climbed up the ranks on Netflix in over 30 countries. During our exclusive interview for Plant Based News, Klaus Mitchell asked Ali and Lucy what proportion of the feedback they thought - in terms of the reception of the documentary - has been positive and negative. Jasmin then began volunteering at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and began steering her career toward animal rights activism. As well as being a leading expert, Jasmin Singer is now a hugely visible presence within the vegan community. She is the former Senior Editor for VegNews Magazine and the longtime love columnist and celebrity interviewer. You may well have seen Jasmin appearing in various documentaries such as The Ghosts In Our Machine and Vegucated. She has also contributed to many anthologies such as Running Eating Thinking; Defiant Daughters; Voices for Animal Liberation; Queer & Trans Voices; and Circles of Compassion. Vegan Chef, Public Speaker and Author. Interview with Brett Cobley / Epivegan Episode 23
01:05:11
Brett Cobley is Epivegan. What first started as a bit of a hobby has now blossomed into a full-time gig. Brett recently launched his debut vegan cookbook "What Vegans Eat". It has been a smash hit already. We discussed social issues such as privilege, poverty and personal ethics. As well as the inspirations for his book and his path to becoming a fully self-employed vegan chef. Brett has a keen passion for philosophy and the nature of life, we could have probably talked for another hour on the topic of reality and what the hell we are all doing here but that might happen in episode 2. Brett is an exceptionally articulate young man who has a wide knowledge of life, which is surprising as he isn't even 30 yet. He is wise beyond his years! I am constantly amazed at how mature people under 30 are these days, I think maybe since I am almost 40 now that is just an age thing! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this weeks episode. Low Impact Movement, Public Speaker & Sustainability Advocate | Interview with Immy Lucas Episode 20
00:40:09
Please meet Imogen (Immy) Lucas a.ka Sustainably Vegan. She is the founder of the Low Impact Movement in February 2018 because she felt tired of feeling guilty for not being 100% waste free. Immy could feel the frustrations within her community and began to realise how excluded some people felt. Her activism has always been a little softer than others but Lucas truly believes this approach has allowed her work to be more accessible to those wishing to engage with this lifestyle. Immy wanted more from the movements she was a part of and wondered why there wasn’t one that combined all the values we hold dear. Being plant based, low waste, minimalist and ethical, Immy wanted a movement that encompassed all of those values and merged them into one. This was the very reason she began social media activism in the first place. Through the Low Impact Movement, Immy has been able to truly engage with likeminded people and build a community that cares about one another. This is the most fulfilling job I have ever had, and no doubt will ever have. Our podcast goes into a bit of detail about her life, how she became vegan, the low impact movement, zero waste, and much more. This is the program we talked about in the discussion LOOP https://www.unilever.com/news/news-and-features/Feature-article/2019/we-are-introducing-reusable-refillable-packaging-to-help-cut-waste.html Presented by Robbie Lockie | Produced & Edited by Gareth Cobb Follow and the growth of the Low Impact Movement below https://lowimpactmovement.org http://instagram.com/lowimpactmovement https://www.instagram.com/sustainably_vegan REVIEW/SHARE: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you enjoyed the episode and have a spare 1-2 minutes please leave a review on iTunes so the Plant Based News podcast ranks higher and becomes more discoverable for other listeners. Vegan Activist & Public Speaker. Interview with Joey Carbstrong | Episode 18
01:16:28
This week is the Australian born animal rights activist Joey Carbstrong. Joey and I discussed in great detail his life as a gang member, the moment he turned his life around. We also touched on topics such as the use of words like "murder, rape and Holocaust' when used in the context of animals and much more. Despite Joey's background, he says his style of activism is non-confrontational and places an emphasis on being polite and respectful. The campaigner feels strongly about what he sees as the responsibility of all vegans to be active participants in furthering the movement. “When you become a vegan, you’re realising you’ve been causing harm to innocent beings and you’ve tried your best as far as practical to stop causing harm. But that is a neutral position; it doesn’t mean you’re doing something fantastic, it just means you’ve stopped doing something horrific or contributing to something that’s horrific. Ingrid Newkirk PETA's founder on euthanasia, Sea World & vegan activism
00:20:55
We visited the headquarters of PETA USA to meet it's founder and tour de force, Ingrid Newkirk. We spoke about euthanasia, Sea World, veganism, the history of PETA and more. Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-killing operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues. PETA's style of activism is often challenged, but there is no doubt PETA has led the way for real changes in animal rights.
