How to create an EFFICIENT golf swing – Kelvin Kelley #226
36:19

Welcome back to the Brain Booster for another week.

Thank you for supporting the show, it really is appreciated.

From time to time people question me about my seemingly indifferent approach to ‘working’ on the golf swing. And that all I want people to do is ‘just play’

This couldn’t be further from the truth as I have always believed that the key to great golf is a blend of swing efficiency coupled with a great mindset.

I do not believe in endlessly dissecting your swing and obsessing over positions but I do believe in having a good understanding of what creates your SHOTS.

It was with that in mind I wanted to welcome back a great coach from the USA and a big supporter of the podcast Kelvin Kelley to discuss how best to make your swing more efficient.

We discuss:

How the set up is the very best place to start making your swing more efficient.

Why you can set up in a way to help you create a powerful impact position

Feeling a dynamic impact position with an impact bag

Hitting angles at address

How to turn the switch to performance on the golf course

Becoming a ‘shot detective’ out on the golf course

Letting the shot create the swing

How your physiology affects your performance

How your lifestyle dramatically affects your performance

Some really solid and interesting concepts from a top coach

Kelvin is a Class A PGA golf professional in San Francisco, California. He has taught at some of the top golf clubs in the Bay Area, which include The Olympic Club and Sonoma Golf Club. Kelvin was recently voted a “Top Instructor To Watch” by golf.com and has written several articles for golf.com and GolfWRX.

Kelvin works with his students to develop an efficient golf swing. He welcomes golfers of all skill levels however is geared towards the more committed golfer. Besides swing and short game instruction, Kelvin is an expert in on and off the course coaching. This includes mental preparation, developing practice routines and course strategizing.

Coaching and Caddying for a PGA Tour winner – Randy Joyner #224
56:28

Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster our really good friend and colleague from the USA, Randy Joyner.

Randy has been establishing himself over the past few years as one of the very best coaches in the States.

He has had outstanding results at ALL levels applying many of the ‘Lost Art of Golf’ principles. One of his long time students is Derek Ernst who has been a winner on the PGA Tour.

We got the chance to discuss with Randy how he works with Derek and in particular what he learned from a recent experience where he caddied for Derek in the John Deere Classic.

There are some absolute gems of information within this conversation.

On this particular week Derek was struggling to make the cut and Randy describes just how they manged to get the job done and play at the weekend.

We often hear about winners on Tour but the real pressure for many players is to get over the cut line and have employment for the weekend

We get totally inside the ropes here with the player/caddie relationship

We discussed :

How a top player would prepare for a PGA Tour event

The pitfalls of doing the WRONG type of practice

Falling into the ‘seriousness’ trap

How you need to ‘live life’ outside the confines of the four rounds

The importance of the ‘in between’ time. The 90% of golf that is NOT golf

Trying to make the cut, feeling uncomfortable but getting the job done anyway

How to embrace the ‘Zone Experience’ with Rupert Spira #223
01:09:59

Today we have a great show lined up as we welcome back Rupert Spira.

This session is a recording of a live webinar I did with Rupert recently discussing the nature of the ‘Zone Experience’

As ever with Rupert it was a wonderfully engaging and thought provoking session full of insight to be applied to all areas of your life.

Rupert Spira is the author of numerous books including ‘Being Myself’ and ‘Being aware of being aware’ His most recent book is ‘You are the happiness you seek’

As a spiritual teacher he explores the concepts of ‘Non Duality’ and the ‘Direct Path’ to experience.

He travels worldwide hosting retreats and teachings around the nature of being and experience.

What is the Zone?

More importantly how can we access its qualities on a more frequent basis

How do we interact with the environment?

Do we see the course as a ‘friendly place’?

What place does ambition have in the Non Dual approach?

Being completely absorbed in something you LOVE to do

Are we seeking happiness in all the wrong places?

A truly great conversation that will engage your mind to ask some deeper questions.

Enjoy!!

What can a club fitting REALLY do for your game? – Nick Hibbs – Tour X #222
33:15

The Myths and Misconceptions around what club fitting can ACTUALLY do for you and your golf.

We go in a slightly different direction on today’s Brain Booster but still with the underlying idea of looking at all avenues to improve your game.

We are joined on the show by Nick Hibbs from Tour X who is one of the best club fitting experts in the UK.

I have known Nick for many years and he is one of the game’s good people with a genuine care for his clients and students.

He has a warmth of personality that is infectious.

Nick has worked with some of the top players in the history of the game such as Vijay Singh, Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo

Players who were renowned for their depth of knowledge with their own clubs.

He served his apprenticeship over many years on the European Tour and his technical know how of all aspects of club fitting is literally second to none.

So what benefit can club fitting have as a Brain Booster

I have often felt from a mental game perspective if you KNOW your clubs are 100% right for you then it is a great assist in calming the mind.

In the show we look into

Tiger Woods opinion on the value of a club fitting and how he sees it worth at least a QUARTER of a shot each round.

How NOT to fall into the trap of adjusting your game to your clubs.

Your clubs should fit YOU and YOUR game.

As we have said so many times can you find out EXACTLY what will make you tick as a unique individual

What a club fitting can and can’t do for you

Why a club fit is not just for better players

How much does the shaft play a part in the performance of your shots?

What is the latest technology with club heads?

What is the actual process of a club fit?

How will you actually benefit?

How to hit the ball out of the middle of the club more often

Wedge fitting or Driver fitting which should you go for?

What are some of the myths and misconceptions with club fitting?

A really thought provoking session that differs from many previous guests but nevertheless a really valuable contribution to your quest to improve.

Manage your golfing expectations – Lou Stagner #221
48:38

How you can use statistics to get the VERY best from your game

What REALLY makes a difference to your scoring?

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster with a wonderful guest in the shape of stat wizard Lou Stagner.

A self-proclaimed ‘golf nut and data nerd’, Stagner has become an influential figure in the golf data space by combining a lifelong passion for the game with his background as a business intelligence and analytics executive.

He has a really strong presence on Twitter where he posts many valuable and insightful statistics to really make you think about your game.

So many of us place undue pressure on our games because of the expectations we carry around with us.

The perception of what is a ‘good’ shot or a ‘makeable putt’ is often completely distorted and out of touch with the actual reality of the game. The very best players in the world miss more putts than they hole from 8 feet. They miss 1 in every 3 greens. Yet we fall into so many perception traps that harm our state of mind on the course.

We make poor decisions based on our perceptions of reality as opposed to the actual truth.

We explore

Why it is vital to know YOUR actual shot patterns and habits

The biggest myths surrounding statistics

How trying to find the ‘right side’ of the fairway could be costing you lots of shots

What are THE most difficult putts?

The best strategy for par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s

What TIGER focused on at his very best

The difference between a 90 shooter and a scratch player. It’s not what you think.

The often overlooked element of FUN and why it is so important to your game

Such a great session with so much to get you thinking about your game

Chaos, Uncertainty and Impermanence in our game. How can we best deal with it? – Vin Harris #220
01:05:05

Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster my good friend Vin Harris.

The previous shows with Vin and the discussions around mindfulness have been so well received and I believe this one will be no exception.

We get the chance to look at chaos, uncertainty and impermanence in your game and in the game of life.

We seem to be living now in such a chaotic world.

Nothing seems to be solid and reliable and the old models seem inappropriate.

Uncertain economics, worrying international conflict.

So many changes which can be really disturbing.

Our thoughts can become so unsettled.

We can end up in a ‘sea of thought’ and this type of thinking can easily follow us out onto the golf course

When our mind is so busy it becomes increasingly difficult to be PRESENT to the next shot in front of you.

What can we do about it?

How can we begin to have a different relationship to our thinking so we can NOTICE our thinking as opposed to being lost in the endless flow of images and sensations.

Vin provides us with a CALM and SAFE voice of reason to help us navigate the uncertainty.

When we make peace with the uncertainty things seem to settle down

We look again at GRATITUDE and how this idea is not just a flaky concept but an essential element of great performance

How to care without worrying

How to get out of the way of ourselves

How to basically be a better friend to ourselves both on and off the course.

A wonderful session with a man who has trained with some of the foremost Buddhist and Meditation teachers over the past 40 years or so

As always you will gain so much listening to the wise words of Vin Harris

Vin Harris was involved in writing and editing “Mindful Heroes – stories of journeys that changed lives”. The authors share their inspiring stories of how mindfulness has been applied to a variety of setting across Education, Health, Business, Sport, Creative Arts and Community work.

The book includes Vin’s chapter “Its Golf…but not as we know it: Golf as a mindfulness practice and a metaphor for life” and an introduction to the Sport section by Karl. Vin has offered to send listeners to the Brain Booster Podcast the eBook versions of these two chapters.

Neuroscience the missing link to TRANSFORM your game – Dr Izzy Justice #219
01:27:35

I absolutely guarantee you will find today’s Brain Booster one of the most valuable sessions you have ever heard  from all the shows we have done.

We are joined by top neuroscientist Dr Izzy Justice the author of GYRA Golf who works with numerous PGA Tour players on their mental game.

Dr Justice explains how the most cutting edge discoveries in neuroscience can make a MASSIVE difference to your game and the execution of your shots.

Our conversation moved in so many fascinating directions and many ‘missing pieces’ were put in place for me with what he had to say.

Izzy is the creator of the ‘Brain Trackman’ a device that allows him to measure a golfers brain activity both before, during and after a shot.

The Brain Trackman takes away the guesswork and gives us an actual concrete and factual insight into what our brain do when we perform well and perhaps more importantly when we get stuck and in our own way.

During the session we looked at:

The myth of ‘muscle memory’ and how it is your brain that creates every single golf shot or putt

How high brain wave frequencies are THE key reason why you do not perform at your best

Alpha and Theta Brain waves as an entry point into the zone

What ACTUALLY happens in your brain when you take a golf lesson and why you need to REALLY understand both learning and more importantly RETRIEVAL

How Sleep is such a vital element to improving your game

Why the way MOST golfers practice does NOTHING to help you in the retrieval process

Why practicing AFTER you have played golf could actually be damaging your game

Why PUTTING training aids are largely ineffective from a neuroscience perspective

What you should be focusing your attention on to hole more putts

Dr. Izzy Justice is a Sports Neuroscientist who has authored 8 books over the course of 30 years on the topic of Emotional Intelligence. He was the first to integrate EQ into sports and athletic performance. He has trained and certified over 300 coaches in EQ in a wide array of sports disciplines worldwide. He has worked with athletes, coaches, and teams in NASCAR, Tennis, Soccer, Golf, Lacrosse, Basketball, Triathlon, NFL, MLB, Olympians, and many collegiate level programs.

Dr. Justice’s primary work is working in Corporate America with leaders of companies integrating EQ into the workplace

Skill Acquisition – The Latest Discoveries with Keith Davids #218
01:03:26

Today on the Brain Booster with one of the legends of Skill Acquisition and Ecological Dynamics, Professor Keith Davids from Sheffield Hallam university

We had a wonderful conversation a few years ago and we got the chance today to update the current position around skill acquisition and how this can benefit your game

The problem with coaching models

Over emphasis on body parts and what that does to the learning process

The limitations of language

The ecological perspective

Adapting to and being in tune to your environment

Solving the problem of the golf shot as a unique moment in time

The myth of automaticity

Repetition without repetition

How coaches should constantly be setting players problems to solve

How we should see the golf course as a series of puzzles to solve

Dealing with and adapting to constant changes

The extreme value of adaptability and how to perform on any given day

What can rock climbing teach us about ADAPTABILITY

As Keith says the very best athletes are the most ADAPTABLE

How to engage your training in an ecological way

As a Professor of Motor Learning in Sport & Human Performance, Keith uses an Ecological Dynamics framework for investigating skill acquisition, expertise and talent development in sport. He is an applied scientist who researches how processes of learning, development, performance preparation and participation in sport, physical activity and exercise may be facilitated. He reviews implications for coaching and teaching at elite, sub-elite and recreational levels of participants, as part of his work. Ecological Dynamics is an integration of Ecological Psychology, Dynamical Systems theory, Evolutionary Science and the Science of Complex Systems, considering individual athletes and teams as complex adaptive systems, self-organising under interacting constraints. Such systems change over different timescales, which has significant implications for learning, development and ageing in children, adults and elderly people. He has over 30 years experience of teaching and conducting research in Ecological Dynamics.

Automatic Golf – Cameron Strachan #217
47:08

On today’s Brain Booster we welcome the originator of ‘Automatic Golf’ Cameron Strachan.

Cameron is an Australian coach who has produced numerous books and programs around the ideas of automatic golf and automatic learning.

Most of what you’re being told to do isn’t working. And as Cameron likes to say, "Only around 2% of the golf population can make all the technical stuff work for them. Everyone else needs a better way".

For the last 25 years Cameron has been writing and thinking deeply about the golf learning process. He has been on a mission to make golf learning easier and more fun for the other 98%.

We discuss how he learned to play the game.

A unique journey of self discovery

Going from shooting in the high hundreds to sub par rounds without any kind of formal instruction.

Then after this stellar progress he took some lessons and began to really struggle to implement the positional theories into his game. He got really bogged down with the theories and began to fall out of love with the game.

Then the discovery of the ‘Inner Game of Golf’ by Timothy Gallwey and how the ideas in the book transformed his approach to the game and led to a lifelong fascination with the learning process in golf.

Cameron details the work he did with Aaron Baddeley on his putting.

How he helped him to totally simplify his approach on the greens

The concept became known as ‘Look and Shoot’

Eliminating so much of the ‘noise’ that can be created on the greens

Occupying the conscious mind with some neutral focus to allow the body to take over

This work culminated in Baddeley becoming the best putter in the world for a period of time in the early 2000’s

How to take a more natural learning approach to swing issues

Giving students problems to solve

The ability to distract the conscious mind to let the genius of your body take over

The power of really effective questions

Drawing out learning from students

The magic of SILENCE in a true learning environment

How you can create a resilient golfer through effective learning environments

Chana Studley recovered from severe PTSD after 3 violent attacks in the UK and spent the next 25 years combining a very successful Academy Award Winning career in Hollywood with coaching and counseling people with trauma, addictions and relationship problems.

After graduating from The One Thought Institute in 2018 she noticed that her 25 years of chronic pain had completely gone and so conducted research to discover if she could reproduce this experience in others.

Following the success of 5 case studies she developed a program called Painless and is now helping clients worldwide with all kinds of health issues and working with doctors and clinicians to introduce them to the Three Principles. Most recently she has started working with people with Long Covid and is having great success in helping them get back to their innate health.

Chana is a World Health Organization Psychological First Responder an international speaker and author. She has Diploma in Psychology and is certified Life Coach with 30 years experience. Chana’s first book, The Myth of Low Self Esteem – a novel about PTSD, Hollywood and healing came out in 2021 and her second, Painless, a novel about chronic pain and the Mindbody connection was published in 2022. Her next novel, Very Well, all about hormones, will be out later this year.

A recent report from the NHS in England suggested that at any one time over 25% of the population is living with some form of chronic pain

Chana helps us make a clear distinction between CHRONIC pain and ACUTE pain and how different parts of the brain are engaged depending on which kind of pain you are suffering

She is a practitioner of the ‘Three Principles’ based on the work of the legendary Sydney Banks

We are basically living in our ‘thinking’ and it is so important to understand how thought works

What we can and more importantly can’t do in relationship to our thinking

A really thought provoking session

It is great to be back with you again on the Brain Booster.

Today we have with us a good friend and colleague from Ireland David Kearney

I have known David over 20 years and in that time he has forged for himself a great career at the top of the coaching ladder.

We get the chance to discuss his work for the Women’s National Team in Ireland

He has recently published a wonderful book called ‘The Golfing Buddha’

It is a remarkable read detailing his journey as a coach culminating in a journey to the Olympic Games in Japan with the Irish Women’s team

The book has so many qualities but perhaps most of all the honesty with which David shares with us his journey as a player and coach

The highs and the lows

The good times and the not so good

At times the frustrations in trying to get the best out of himself and the players he has worked with

We get the chance to talk about the role mentors have played in his life

The good people along the way

The value and impact a single sentence can have on the trajectory of your career or your experience of the game

David is extremely well read and has experienced working with some of the top coaches in the game

The influence of Buddhism on his thinking and attitude

The concept of ‘right action’

How mentally we fall into traps that create so much suffering

Mindfulness and the ability to be able to notice your thinking as opposed to just reacting to your thoughts

Developing equanimity

Working with junior players

The tough role of being a parent

How coaches can best support promising junior players

You will find a tremendous warmth and wisdom in David’s book which shines brightly in this podcast.

Acceptance – The Ultimate Mental Game Skill – Dr Raymond Prior #213
01:02:32

Today we welcome onto the Brain Booster one of the top performance psychologists in the world Dr Raymond Prior

He works with numerous PGA Tour Players as well as top athletes from a wide cross section of different sports

He is also in big demand from corporate executives and show biz entertainers

He and I have recently been guests on the Hal Sutton podcast ‘Be the right club today’ where I heard him speak and felt it was essential to get him onto the Brain Booster

We both have a similar view of the importance of ACCEPTANCE and the huge benefits potentially to your game

We got the chance to discuss

What is acceptance?

More importantly what is it NOT?

It doesn’t mean we don’t care

It doesn’t mean we are resigned to our fate

How acceptance is actually the gateway to the present moment

The link to a high performance state of mind

How acceptance allows you to deal with the REALITY of what is

Being able to play THIS shot in THIS moment from a neutral state of mind

Why your brain is TERRIBLE at multi-tasking

Why our brain is designed to move away from perceived danger

Playing freely when we are present to our experience

How brain wave frequency is the critical key to performance

Releasing your CURRENT skills is all about being able to create stable brain wave frequency.

Why practice in a high brain wave frequency is a total waste of time

Embracing the chaos BEFORE the game as a way of reducing brain wave frequency

What ‘negative surprise’ does for our game

A really wonderful session with Raymond that will leave you with some REALLY special tools to help your game.

A Noble Aim – How to get closer to your true PURPOSE – Karl Morris #212
21:25

Thank you for joining me on the Brain Booster and on today’s show we have a solo session.

I often get asked to do these episodes and I wanted to share with you a concept dear to my heart and one that I believe can be really valuable to you.

Jordan Peterson has called it a ‘Noble Aim’

Deciding what is important to you

What is truly important about the direction you want your life to take

So important that you are prepared to invest fully your time and life energy

To get real clarity on this is SO important

Yet once you have this clarity it is then vital that you ‘bury the goal’

It seems a PARADOX

Yet this is THE Key to improvement

Because when you ‘bury the goal’ you can then absorb yourself in TODAY

To have the skill of ACCUMULATING GOOD days

This sounds easy

Yet VERY VERY few truly have the skill to do this

We let the days drift by

We don’t make the most of the single opportunity THIS day provides

To gain excellence at GOOD DAYS you need to understand the importance BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS

The START of your day will determine SO much about the quality of your day

What do YOU do in the first hour?

Does it set you up for success?

The devil is in the detail

Be forensic about what you actually DO

Not what you think you do but the actual patterns of your behaviour

Make your habits TRULY productive in that first hour

Do you get your brain ready to take on the day?

Do you hydrate?

Change the first hour of the day and you could potentially transform your world

Start the day well

You then have a chance to continue

Can you embrace GRATITUDE?

Can you get yourself to appreciate just how precious THIS day is?

Endings

Bruce Lee said  ‘Research your own experience’

You can only research your experience when you REFLECT well

Reflect well and consistently

Specific suggestions to make the most of your reflections

Be able to reinforce the GOOD things you do

Adjust the elements that need to change

The more consistent your reflections the better and more productive your ACTIONS will become

What is your NOBLE AIM ?

Do you have the right support around you?

Do you have someone you can be accountable to?

What is the value of a great MENTOR?

A thought provoking session that can really turbo charge your season

How to improve your game with a constraints led approach – Ian Renshaw #211
01:02:50

How your ENVIRONMENT impacts on EVERYTHING you do

Skill is the ability to adapt to your ENVIRONMENT

The defining skill of ADAPTABILITY

On today’s Brain Booster we welcome one of the world’s leading experts in skill acquisition Professor Ian Renshaw

Ian has a Sport Science and PE background and this frames his approach to working with coaches and teachers.

Since then he has combined his teaching, research and coaching to develop his practice by developing a deeper understanding of the key theoretical ideas of Ecological Dynamics and its implementation through a CLA. Ian has a deep passion for improving practice and continues to test his ideas in his own coaching and teaching.

Ian along with Peter Arnott has created the program Swing it Like Tiger

A fascinating program looking in depth at the PROCESS of learning employed by Tiger Woods

The role played by your environment and how it will affect your learning and development

We got the chance to explore some fascinating areas of skill development

Measuring our swings indoors

What are the drawbacks

Environment is EVERYTHING

‘Playing in the Shadows’ The Golden Era of the European Tour – Andrew Murray #209
01:13:54

Today on the Brain Booster we have with us former European Open winner Andrew Murray and we get the chance to discuss life on tour in the 1980’s

A wonderful trip down memory lane

Andrew played on what many agree was the golden era of the European Tour

A period of time that saw the emergence of some of the legends of the game

“THE MAGNIFICENT SIX”

Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal and Ian Woosnam

A period that saw European golf dominate many of the Majors most notably the US Masters

Winning the Ryder Cup at the Belfry in 1985 for the first time in numerous decades and then going on to win numerous times over the next decade.

Life on tour then was light years away from what we see now

Pre Internet, pre mobile phones and the ability to organise all of your travel with one click.

Having to get around Europe in camper vans, hitting your own balls to your caddie on the range, persimmon woods and balata balls

Literally a different world

But a world that shaped the wonderful tour we see now

We discussed how many of the great players found ‘their’ way.

The great fluid swing of Ian Woosnam and how a change of approach allowed it to flourish

The wonderful talent of Sandy Lyle and how he won the European Order of merit without hardly ever hitting his driver over a full season

The genuine kindness and sincerity of Bernhard Langer and why he has been able to play at such a high level for so long

How Seve Ballesteros shared with Andrew some golden nuggets of information about the short game and then tried to steal one of his wedges!!

Playing with the great man and how intimidating he was

How he was the KING of playing the crowd and utilising their energy

How Nick Faldo was able to switch off his analytical mind on the golf course and just play SHOTS

The emergence of the great Swedish golfers and their approach to fitness and conditioning that changed the approach to the game

The incredible contribution made by John Jacobs as both a player, coach and European Tour ambassador

How a swing tip from a car mechanic and whistling helped Andrew himself win the European Open at Walton Heath

How he would have worked more on the mental game if he had his time again and what that would have looked like.

The wonderful camaraderie on the tour in the 1980’s

The rivalries and friendships that have stood the test of time

Just a wonderful insight into a great period of golf and a conversation that triggered so many good memories

It is wonderful to welcome back my good friends Piers Ward and Andy Proudman from Me and My Golf

They have built a phenomenal business over the past few years putting out high quality content on YouTube

To really care about the golfer

Keep it simple

Obsessive attention to detail

Delivering massive value

To keep learning and developing

As Piers and Andy went on to explain these values have been central to driving their business to such tremendous heights

They both embrace and follow these core values

Also the ability to work together and having another person give you accountability

We also go the chance to discuss the value of EXPERIENCE

Being on the front line and actually fully understanding what golfers REALLY need

We also had the opportunity to discuss some of the great players they have had the chance to work with over the years

The list is a who’s who of the top players in the game

Rory McIllroy

Dustin Johnson

Jason Day

Sir Nick Faldo

In particular the opportunity to work with their hero Nick Faldo and to truly understand what made his such a great player

Giving shots specific names

How Nick used to TRAJECTORY to help him shape shots

They have also proven themselves as coaches in the real world. Notably of late with their work with PGA Tour player Arron Rai

Some great insights on players strengths and weaknesses and what YOU can do to get the best from their game

Knowing where your game CURRENTLY is and how to get the best from it

Understanding the only person who really matters on the golf course YOURSELF

Why you should get on the GOLF COURSE more often

01:09:48

Really excited to bring you todays show as we have with us Will Robins

Will owns and operates WRGolf Coaching based in Sacramento County, CA and is the CEO of Robins Golf Logistix (RGX), a consulting company that mentors instructors on coaching programs.

Through RGX, Will trains over 80 coaches worldwide on how to implement programs that accelerate and guarantee results for their students while doubling their teaching / coaching revenue.

A native of the United Kingdom, Will came to the United States to play college golf in Monterey, California, after graduation with his BBA in Marketing and Management from Northwood University in Florida in 2000.

Will played on the mini tours around America before sustaining injuries in the 2004 Thailand Tsunami while on his honeymoon with his wife, Amanda.

These injuries led Will to coach the game of golf and Will quickly understood most of his students came to him not enjoying the game and overthinking to the point of frustration.

Will took his playing skills and life-changing experience to create an instructional program that would guarantee players results and inspire them to love the game of golf again.

We got the chance to discuss:

How the Tsunami changed everything

Literally on the brink of death Will said:

‘I am going to die FIGHTING’

His story is compelling

Fighting back from disaster

The route to a new career

To go from PLAYING to COACHING

Looking at coaching from a different perspective

What REALLY makes a DIFFERENCE?

As Will says:

‘You don’t have a golf swing problem you have a tension problem’

How lowering expectations can massively reduce TENSION

Having FUN on the golf course PLAYING the game of golf

How destructive the search for swing perfection is and more importantly what to do about it

Will has been brave enough to coach from a completely different perspective

An inspiration to us all

Swing it like Tiger - Peter Arnott #205
01:03:01

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by Performance coach and author Peter Arnott

He was co author with Graeme McDowall and Ian Renshaw of the wonderful book ‘A Constraints Led Approach

to Golf Coaching’

Now with Ian Renshaw he has put together a fantastic learning program called ‘Swing it like Tiger’

As we discuss during our time together the program is not really about any positions in Tiger’s swing. It is much more about the LEARNING process that he employed to become one of the greatest of all time.

We discuss

How Tiger spent most of his early development on the golf course with coach Rudy Duran

How he learned to create shots

Created shots names and how this can help commitment

Setting up ‘cues’ to trigger his body into action

The concept of ‘Tiger Par’ and how YOU can apply that to your game successfully

Building effective learning environments

Situational training

The influence of his father Earl Woods who had a background in the Special Forces

How Tiger used his visual sense to enhance his learning

The Number one SKILL to develop to become a better player

How you can ‘tune in’ to the golf club so much more

Building a repertoire of SHOTS

Giving the shots a name to cue your body

So much of Peters work is around transferring your training into play

How you can use technology more efficiently to transfer your learning?

How better training can make you a more adaptable golfer?

How can you best apply these ideas to your short game skills

Peter also has some wonderful research from Scottish European Tour players about the pitfalls of incorrect training that is not SPECIFIC to what you require as a Tour Player

A really great session

Peter shared so many wonderful insights to really get you thinking about the way you apply yourself to becoming the player you want to be

Changing your PHILOSOPHY to simplify the Game of Golf -  Nick Bradley #204
01:08:38

Today we welcome back a very good friend of the podcast in the shape of Nick Bradley.

Nick is one of the most innovative thinkers about the game.

Amongst many other highlights in his career he worked with Paul McGinley as part of the successful Ryder Cup team in 2014

He has published a great new book called

‘The 50 Secrets to Great Golf You DON”T Know about YET’

The book is a series of essays compiled by Nick over the years working with some of the best players in the world such as Sir Nick Faldo and Justin Rose

We discuss how your philosophy of the game will affect just about everything you do from the movements you make to the experience of the game itself

Are you a golfer who plays to WIN or are you a golfer who PLAYS to PLAY?

A very important distinction

Which one are you?

Once you get really clear on this your approach to the game can match your intention

Get it wrong and you can be hopelessly misaligned

Nick has spent a LOT of time with Sir Nick Faldo

Why was he so great?

How did he work on his game in a way that was different from other players?

The ability to blend the technical and the mental

Nick makes a valid point about our ability to create the SHOT we wish has to be supported by the correct motion of the club and body

How to best do this

Working with your ego

How to befriend and utilise your golfing ego

What does that LOOK like practically ?

How to use the ego to ask EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS

Dealing with first tee nerves or being able to close out a tournament

How to manage your ENERGY

Can you become a REDUCTIONIST?

Can you save time and energy to become a better player?

The reduction of thought through habit

Can you SIMPLIFY your golfing business plan?

Shot indexing

What is it?

How can YOU apply it?

Should a tour player have a coach as an employee or should he be a consultant?

A really interesting conversation on the direction of elite coaching

Nick is always great value

He is not afraid to voice some controversial opinions

He says it as it is

Very refreshing and you will gain so much from his insights

01:04:13

Today on the Brain Booster we have PGA Tour Legend Hal Sutton.

Former Ryder Cup Captain and winner of the USPGA Championship in 1983

Hal shared some wonderful and honest insights into his game, his development and his view on the modern game.

Going back to the PGA Championship in 1983

On the back nine on Sunday Hal had his hero Jack Nicklaus chasing him down. He had a number of consecutive bogeys and by his own admission the thought of being labelled a ‘choker’ came into his mind.

Yet when it REALLY mattered Hal was able to summon an inner strength to get the job done.

He explains HOW

Hal talks about the key influences in his career

The coaching of Jimmy Ballard

The mentorship of the great Byron Nelson

The conversations they had and how one single insight gave Hal the ability to hit the final tee shot to win his major at Riviera

The experience of being a Ryder Cup Captain

The reaction of certain players

The pairing of Tiger and Phil

How they responded

The fall out from being on the losing team

The questions and the opinions from other people

How the defeat affected Hal for a LONG time afterwards and how he had to rekindle his love of the game

Hal was also very candid about his relationship with his father

What they would change if they had their time again

The mistakes that can be made and more importantly what to do about them

Such wise words of advice that is so valuable for any parent of a promising junior player

What will TRULY make us happy in Golf and in LIFE – Rupert Spira #202
01:24:18

Today we have an extra special guest on the Brain Booster with author and spiritual teacher Rupert Spira.

He is the author of numerous books including ‘Being Myself’ and ‘Being aware of being aware’

As a spiritual teacher he explores the concepts of ‘Non Duality’ and the ‘Direct Path’ to experience.

He travels worldwide hosting retreats and teachings around the nature of being and experience.

Today on the Brain Booster we explore many of the illusions surrounding happiness.

We look deeply at what will ACTUALLY make us happy in sport and in life itself.

Why there is a myth to the idea that winning or acquisition can make us truly happy and fulfilled in the long term.

Why so many people achieve great results yet often they then feel a sense of disillusion.

How the quest of acquisition can actually precipitate a crisis when we achieve our goals but yet still feel lost in the search for happiness and contentment.

What DOES make us truly happy?

How can we connect with our ESSENTIAL being?

Rupert Spira has spent most of his life contemplating these questions and in that search has spent time and studied the texts of some of the world’s great spiritual teachers such as Krishnamurti, Ramana Maharshi and Francis Lucille

In our time together we discussed

Why sport can reveal so much to us from a spiritual perspective

How to be happy BEFORE results happen instead of being dependent on them and so vulnerable to poor outcomes

How we can fit a spiritual enquiry alongside goals and ambitions

What is ACTUALLY happening to us when we score a goal, win a tournament and achieve ‘success’.

It is not what we think.

How truly great sports men and women seem to channel a special energy and how observing great play actually lifts us all

How opponents can actually be a wonderful assistance in revealing the best version of ourselves on the course

What to do on a practical level to make your experience of your game a deeper and more fulfilling one.

I had such a wonderful time speaking to Rupert and it became clear why he has such a following worldwide of people to find out more about the ‘direct path’ to happiness

Acquiring golf WISDOM from a life on the PGA Tour – Phil Blackmar #202
49:29

Today on to the Brain Booster we welcome an extra special guest from the US in Phil Blackmar.

Phil had a successful career on the PGA Tour including three tournament victories.

The Greater Hartford Open, The Provident Classic and the Shell Houston Open were all victories achieved by winning a play off.

The Provident Classic play off was against one of the game’s true legends and tragic losses Payne Stewart.

In the show Phil describes the intriguing mental game tool he used the week of his victory to turn his game around.

He then went on to play on the Champions Tour winning his first event the AT&T Championship in 2009. At the weekend he went 36 holes without making a bogey to secure victory.

Standing at 6ft 7in Phil is one of the tallest players to have played the PGA Tour

After his playing career he went on to be a very popular analyst and on course presenter for the GOLF Channel

During our time together Phil gave some wonderful insights to his development as a player.

How he fell into the trap of being overly concerned with swing mechanics and the mental trap of perfectionism.

The importance of the shot creating the swing in the moment

How to be able to MANAGE and ADAPT in the moment with what you have today

We also discussed ‘feeling good’ to ‘play good’ as opposed to waiting for the golf ball to make you feel a certain way.

The relationship to the game and what Phil would have done differently

How for a period of time his enjoyment of the game was taken away

In his time Phil played with some of the greats of the game such as Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino but he makes a special mention around the legend that was Arnold Palmer and the incredible aura he had.

The great Jack Nicklaus take on ADAPTABILITY and being able to adjust in the moment

The development of Tiger Woods. How he trained to develop his mind with Dr Jay Brunza with what is known as ‘situational training’

The use of hypnosis and meditation

The blending of both ART and SCIENCE to maximise your game

To conclude Phil makes THREE wonderful suggestions that you MUST hear

We all need to understand the concept of impermanence and the role it plays in our ever changing human landscape. As much as we like to build the idea of safety and security at some point life will throw at us versions of impermanence.

We will lose the job we love, the relationship we had will break down, our health will suffer. The nature of our existence is one of constant change. How we deal with that change is another matter.

When we play sport we constantly have to deal with and confront LOSS. Be that the loss of form or the loss of a game or the loss of fitness.

When we experience loss often our biggest challenge is our response.

The way our mind reacts.

Do we react or do we RESPOND?

So today it is wonderful to welcome on to the Brain Booster Allan Flood the author of a wonderful book called ‘Perfect Misfortune’

As Allan describes in our session together he was constantly living his life in either the past or the future. Then along came a major health issue.

He found he had developed MS

At first his mind went into overdrive trying to search for solutions.

As he says he got lost in his own thinking.

As time went on he learned to let his mind go quiet and allow wisdom to emerge. It is a fascinating interview with a really interesting man.

Allan talks about the difference between the ‘how to world’ and the ‘what is world’

How we get so lost in the how to world.

Focus, Commitment and Letting Go

Forgiving of self in the moment

The ability to love what you do in the moment

How our ego needs self-importance to survive

How to transform your game as opposed to just getting ‘better’

A great session that you will gain so much from

Connected Golf – Jayne Storey #199
43:09

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome back Jayne Storey.

In previous shows Jayne has given us some wonderful insights on how to practically apply ancient wisdom from Tai Chi

We get the chance today to talk about her new book ‘Connected Golf’

The whole thrust of the book is to explore why there is such a gap between most golfers performance on the range and then on the course.

Then more importantly how to bridge that gap.

She talks about the vital importance of having a daily training or practice

The importance of posture

How many modern coaches mistake what is good posture

How to use the ground more efficiently

How to use your feet in the golf swing

How we get lost in technical information at the expense of fluid motion

Jayne Storey is a writer and coach who specialises in helping those who love golf and other sports overcome nerves, anxiety and mental interference so they can perform under pressure.

Her training is known as Chi Performance (“Chi” denotes the Chinese word for the breath).

Jayne can teach you some simple, proven PERFORMANCE PRACTICE methods which are trusted by hundreds of sports-people to help them release complex movement skills like the golf swing in a non-technical way.

Jayne’s approach is based on the Tai Chi principle that Stillness is the Master of Motion and uses traditional breathing, postural and movement practices to help develop a state of relaxed concentration sometimes referred to as the zone or flow.

She is the author of the Amazon best-seller Breathe Golf; The Missing Link to a Winning Performance

What can we learn from Mentally Tough Tennis – Pat Flynn #198
01:09:16

How we can learn to change our relationship to our thoughts.

I have always believed in looking to other sports to see what we can learn to bring to our own sport. Often when we look outside the confines of our own world we can gain so much.

So today it is great to welcome on to the Brain Booster Pat Flynn from the world of tennis.

Pat’s life story is an incredible one

As a junior he was the Australian Junior Tennis Champion and went on to earn a scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. After the college career he went on to play professionally, reaching 390 in the world and winning the Queensland Hardcourt Championships.

After his playing career, he coached both on the professional tour and as a Tennis Australia state coach.

More recently, his love of the game drew him back to competing, resulting in him becoming the Australian 50+ Seniors Champion and recently became one of the oldest players in the world to qualify for a Pro Tour Event, defeating a world ranked player in the process.

Throughout his journey, he has had a passion for the importance of the mental parts of the game and how it can positively influence our lives both on and off the court.

This passion later led Pat to seek out Dr Anthony Ross and undergo his MTT training and become a certified Mentally Tough Tennis Performance Consultant.

We look into the importance of early development and the way to get the best out of your time

What we can learn from the time intervals in tennis and how we can use these insights for our golf

The ability to get back to the moment and to RESET for this point in this moment

The importance of good body language and how the body is always talking to our mind

The ability to have your attention on RELEVANT cues in the present moment

Pat present a useful model of how the mind works

Imagine the mind is made up of three parts:

  1. Automatic Thoughts and Feelings (ATFs) – The ATFs pop into the head and body automatically based on previous experience and genetic factors. They can be helpful or unhelpful.
  2. Wisemind – It quietly gives wise advice to act in ways that align with values e.g. Strive to Win and Improve. Enjoy the Challenge. Be Fair and Respectful.
  3. You – You decide how to act after listening to the ATFs and Wisemind.

We look into the true principles of acceptance

How you cannot instantly change the feelings you have in the moment but you CAN learn to accept those feelings and come back to the most relevant cues right NOW to get the job done.

Shoot Lower Numbers with better Course Management – Scott Fawcett #197
01:16:53

It is my great pleasure to welcome to the show Scott Fawcett from DECADE GOLF

He has worked with some of the best players in the world and has been making a huge impact around the world with his DECADE course management system

His work with Will Zalatoris took him from outside the worlds top 3000 amateurs to the top ten and then on to an incredibly successful start to his Pro career

Stuart Cink used his system to get back into the winner’s circle again on the PGA Tour after a lengthy absence

Cink said he had taken away the need to make difficult decisions on the course

Curiously a lot of what Scott talks about from a science and data perspective fits beautifully with our ideas from the Lost Art of Golf

Scott reinforced why it is SO important to work on your PACE in putting

How a simple ladder drill can seriously reduce your putting averages

The dangers of perfectionism and how even the VERY best players are surprisingly inaccurate with their approach play

Being able to understand and play for your miss

How being aggressive and committed off the tee will most times pay real dividends for your overall scoring

The FIVE key stats that Tiger Woods focused on that allowed him to totally dominate the game in the early 2000’s

How the first mistake is rarely fatal – It’s what you do AFTER that mistake which is key

How expectations in a game of variability can seriously derail your attempts to put your best scores together

Take in the information from this session

I guarantee it will make a BIG difference

Being your Authentic Self – Kristina Mand Lakhiani #194
52:02

We have talked at length on the Brain Booster before about ‘Utmost Sincerity’

The concept proposed by Timothy Gallwey

Another description of utmost sincerity could be ‘Authenticity’

Being authentic to yourself and others

Playing the game for authentic reasons

Today we take on a unique view from Kristina Mand Lakhiani who is not involved in sport but who brings to the show some fascinating insights that could have a big impact on your game and your life.

We got to talk at length about ‘Authenticity’

About your relationship with yourself

The courage to chase the ‘Big Idea’

How to genuinely do what you love to do and not be afraid to do so

We get as diverse as discussing  the fall of the USSR and the collapse of communism as a result of enough people having the courage to follow their strong convictions

It was a truly inspiring discussion that I know you will enjoy

The Lost Art of the Short Game – Karl Morris #193
22:25

As I get asked to do the solo sessions quite a bit I hope you don’t mind me indulging you today to talk about the book written by Gary Nicol and myself.

The Lost Art of the Short game.

It has recently been released and already has been up to Number 1 in the Amazon golf rankings.

It is a piece of work we are particularly proud of.

As I describe today the book opens up by going back in time to two of the greatest shots ever played in the history of golf.

Seve Ballesteros on the 18th at Royal Birdale in 1976 and Tiger Woods on the 16th at the Masters in 2005.

We start the book with these shots because they give a strong indication of what the book is about.

To develop your short you need to engage your IMAGINATION and creativity.

These two shots are pure imagination at work.

We also talk about the need to tie in with imagination a really strong understanding of how to use the TOOL in your hand

How do you actually get the best out of the wedges you use?

The answer to that question is revealed

With the help of guest contributors such as Bob Vokey, the godfather of modern wedges, Sky Sports Andrew Coltart

Dean Robertson from Stirling University who is a short game genius

Mike Clayton one of the game’s great course designers

The book is packed full of great training you can use at this time of year

Ideas about HOW to change your approach to scoring

Randy Joyner – Unlocking the keys to Performance #192
51:14

Today we are joined again on the Brain Booster by a good friend of the podcast Randy Joyner.

Randy has been on the show a couple of times before and is a great supporter of both the Mind Factor and the Lost Art of Golf series.

Randy is one of the top coaches in the USA

He has had major success with players at all levels especially junior and college players

He has had some incredible results over the past few years by coaching so much more on the golf course as opposed to the convention of being stuck on the range.

We talk in today’s show about his recent trip to Ireland and the wonderful experience he had over there.

How the nature of links golf sparked his imagination to create golf shots not golf swings.

He also mentioned the impact that the new book The Lost Art of the Short game has had on his coaching and playing

We dive deep today into the nature of performance and learning

How to really develop key concepts such as the shot creating the swing

How to train to hit SHOTS

Feeling the swing with just one hand

Taking your game to the golf course

Developing an ability to get the ball around when your game is less than 100%

The three types of shots

This is a GAME CHANGER

Randy is a top coach and when you listen to him you can see why he has had so much success developing players

Niraj Naik – The Renegade Pharmacist #191
01:02:21

On the Brain Booster today we have a very different direction.

We get to meet the man known as the ‘Renegade Pharmacist’ Niraj Naik

To look at a different perspective

Possibly controversial

Maybe a very different view than your own

Hopefully by looking at times in totally counterintuitive ways we get to expand our consciousness.

We get the chance with Nirak to look at a more natural way of living

From a more healthy diet to movement and breath work.

We look into Ayurvedic healing

How your mental state can profoundly affect your health

The ego state and how it can knock us completely off balance

How the breath can have such a profound effect on your health

The link between correct breathing and great performance

How fast breathing can impact so much of our health

How to take control of your breathing

Niraj Naik is a qualified pharmacist who comes from a background of working long hours for several years as a community pharmacist.  Becoming a certified pharmacist at the ripe age of 24, he got to witness first-hand, many clients going home with shopping bags full of drugs each month, rarely getting better and usually going on to suffer from other diseases.

He also learnt of the debilitating side effects of the prescription medication which drove many of the patients to have to take more and more drugs to ease the side effects.

How we are always feeling our thinking – Dr Bill Pettit #190
59:33

Today we welcome to the show Dr Bill Pettit

How our thinking creates all of our experiences

The Subtle nature of thought

You are either in your thoughts or you are in your life ….

This is such an important message for us all

Bill has a fascinating story

He spent over 20 years with the legendary Sydney Banks

As he says himself …..

It was the weekend of April Fools’ day in 1983 and in lieu of experiencing the pranks this day is known for, I was listening to a man called Sydney Banks talk about the spiritual nature of the human mind. Sitting in San Francisco that afternoon, I had hope awaken in me — hope that I could find a better level of mental health — and it lightened my heart and mind more than any practical joke could have.

As I spent more time in conversation with Syd, l started to see incremental changes in how I navigated my closest relationships, and responded to troublesome emotions. I started listening to others with more respect and less judgment. I reacted less to anger and negative feelings. I began to trust that leaving my thinking alone when upset, allowed my mind to quiet and more often brought me to the feeling, and solution that I desired.

It is a fascinating insight with Bill about being able to leave the mind alone

Let it settle

Do not always be trying to ‘fix’ your thinking

Trust your innate capacity for wisdom and insights

It is a strong message for us all to follow

You will find the experience of spending time in Bill’s company a very gratifying one

Fred Shoemaker, Karl Morris and Richard Sheridan – Presentation to the Olympic Club in San Francisco #189
01:34:28

What ACTUALLY makes difference in coaching ?

What REALLY has an impact on the way you experience the game?

On today’s Brain Booster we have a slightly different show lined up for you. One that I am sure you will enjoy.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of being asked to do a live presentation with Fred Shoemaker and Richard Sheridan to members of the world famous Olympic Club in San Francisco.

We had a wonderful wide ranging discussion which I am sure will really get you thinking about your game and if you are a coach your whole philosophy and approach to the game.

We really drill into what does and doesn’t make a difference. To both playing and coaching.

Why the ‘DO’ instruction which is so dominant in the world of coaching is largely ineffective

How there are 4 levels of instruction and how to gain an understanding of which levels actually make a true impact

We look at natural movement

Instinctive movement

The joy of actually moving in a way that is complementary with YOUR body

How is it actually created?

How the CONTEXT you create for your golf will determine the way you play and feel both on and off the golf course

Do you have a mind or ARE you your mind?

How you can look at your mind as a crazy machine that will do what it will do but you don’t have to fall into the trap of believing everything your mind tells you

As ever when Fred gets talking it is a wonderful listen. It is a great experience. You will want to have a note book and pen handy with this one. There are some absolute gems

The Lost Art of the Short game – Gary Nicol #187
48:44

It is exciting to announce that we have just finished the final book in the ‘Lost Art’ trilogy.

The Lost Art of the Short Game will be available in the autumn so it seemed a really good idea to get back onto the Brain Booster fellow author Gary Nicol.

Gary has a wealth of experience in coaching from his time on the European Tour working with some of the best players in the world to his current position of coaching from one of the most beautiful golfing locations on earth Archerfield in Scotland

We have both been greatly touched by the feedback we have received from the two previous books, The Lost Art of Putting and the Lost Art of Playing golf.

It seems we have been able to connect a number of golfers back to the source of the joy of creating shots and putts.

Creating shots and putts in YOUR way as opposed to a prescribed method engineered by someone else.

On today’s show we dive a bit deeper into all things Lost Art

What have we actually LOST?

More importantly how do we FIND it again?

How we lost connection with the real heart and soul of the game

Looking more specifically at the SHORT GAME

We had the great honour to have the legend of wedges Bob Vokey write the introduction for us to the book.

He stressed the importance of knowing what the club in your hand is meant to do and HOW to use it.

Gary describes this perfectly

This simple understanding will make a BIG difference in your ability to go out and CREATE some great short game shots

We look into the role of imagination

The often over looked aspect of the game

A great session with Gary his wisdom and practical common sense always shine through in his words

Finding True Purpose in your Coaching – Sandy Jamieson #186
01:03:26

Today on the Brain Booster we have a fantastic session with Sandy Jamieson.

We got the chance to pay our respects to Ramsay McMaster who had a big influence on us both. Ramsay past away 10 years ago in the most sudden and tragic of circumstances

Sandy himself is a fascinating story of a golf coach achieving what many perceive to be the ultimate in the coaching arena which is working with tour players.

He had great success and became a ‘big name’ on the PGA and European Tour working with the likes of Robert Allenby and Jarrod Lyle

More and more players sought out his advice.

The trajectory was stellar

Yet he realised bit by bit how little this life actually satisfied him at a deep level

He stopped working on the Tour

He went back to club life working at one of the top member’s clubs in Australia

Coaching club golfers but as Sandy mentions this again didn’t give him a true sense of satisfaction

He finally connected back with his true purpose and passion in life by going back to the very heart of the game of golf

He went back to coaching beginners at a public course

Not only did he do this but he did this with just ONE CLUB

He now ONLY coaches beginners

We had a great chat about his philosophy of learning the game

The benefits of SIMPLICITY

Also about the future of the game

Growing the game

The need to get people playing golf in a way they enjoy so we can RETAIN them

To make the game fun and accessible

A great session to make you think about TRUE PURPOSE in life

Learning with the Brain in Mind – Michael Hebron and Susie Meyers #185
47:09

Today we have a very special show as we welcome back to the Brain Booster Michael Hebron and Susie Meyers.

The podcast with Susie a few weeks ago went down really well and we had some tremendous feedback.

On that show Susie mentioned how much Michael Hebron had been an influence on her career.

I can say the same myself.

Michael was very kind to me a number of years ago when he welcomed me to his club at Smithtown Landing in New York and he allowed me to watch him teach.

We have kept in touch ever since

From those early days Michael has evolved his coaching from a very technique orientated model to one that is much more about the nature of LEARNING

How we need to create learning environments to allow students to best develop their game.

Michael has spent many years researching the most productive ways to coach and learn with the brain in mind

The conversation flowed in a number of directions that you will find useful to consider

Golf is a game of motion not positions

The importance of time in the golf swing

Bad swings are not made when get out of time

A putting swing and a driver swing take the same time

The concept of ONE in the swing

Coaching to get students to THINK

How we react to the images in our mind before the shot

How to create more effective images

How we can develop effective sub conscious learning

The myth of ‘muscle memory’

What we CAN influence before he shot

The vital role of IMAGINATION

How emotions drive so much of our development

Asking some of life’s BIG questions – Sam Jarman #184
52:32

I had the chance to talk with Sam Jarman on today’s Brain Booster.

Golf was the thread we began with but the conversation moved in so many interesting areas.

Sam is a radically different thinker

A potential game changer

He looks at both golf and life through a refreshingly honest lens

His work has been influenced by the teachings of Sydney Banks the originator of the concept of Three Principles

He has written two great books ‘The Three Principles to Outstanding Golf’ and ‘Take Relief’

Both outstanding pieces of work

During our time together Sam discussed his own journey of exploration and his commitment to answer some of life’s deeper questions.

Who am I?

What is my purpose?

Why am I here?

As I said not the usual discussion you may find on most podcasts about golf

Yet I am absolutely certain that our golf will always be a reflection of US

We cannot help but bring ourselves with us to the golf course

When golf is a means to try to quieten the ego

When golf is so much of our identity

When the outcome of a golf shot is like life and death

The journey will probably be a miserable one

Sam gives some great insights about our true nature

The nature of our mind

The nature of our being

Many of the myths and misconceptions around the ‘mental game’

The futility of trying to fix thinking with more and more thinking

Why we fall into the trap of feeling we lack something

The feeling we need to be and do more

We discuss the wonderful concept of ‘utmost sincerity’

A great session with a fascinating man

Steven was an extremely popular guest along with his colleague Fred Travis. The book he has written is called ‘Simplicity

The title says it all and it is a direction we should all perhaps be moving more towards Steven’s work is all about Fluid Motion

The ability to access what you already have.

The motion that is actually stored in your motor system.

How many of us would be delighted to just be able to get to access what we KNOW we can already do?

So many golfers instinctively know that what they bring to the golf course is only a fraction of their true capabilities In todays show we also explore how to actually change movements within the Fluid Motion philosophy.

What trying to ‘change’ is not always the best option.

Why the desire to always be BETTER can sometimes really get in the way of any progress.

We look at the best ways to coach beginners from a Fluid Motion

How the brain incorporates the commands you give

The vital role of the cerebellum and how to make sure you do not compromise its genius

All in all a great episode which will really get you thinking

Stevens book is called ‘Simplicity'

Living life from point A – Susie Meyers #182
47:07

It is wonderful to welcome back onto the Brain Booster Susie Meyers.

Susie has been one of our most popular guests

In the last show we talked about her book Golf from Point A and how it applied to your game.

The idea of POINT A is so simple yet profound.

When you play from Point A you play in the present

You play with what you have TODAY

You play the shot in front of you in a way that it has no past or no future

It is simply at POINT A

This shot in this unique moment in time.

You get to trust what you have today

Instead of hoping for consistency you develop adaptability

The ability to get the best of what you have right NOW

In today’s session we take the idea of POINT A somewhat further

We look at LIFE from Point A

How can this affect your work, your business and just your life in general when you are able to play LIFE from Point A

It is about deciding the person you are going to be TODAY

What attitudes are you going to bring to the next 24 hours

It is a wonderful way of maximising this day in front of you

It ties in so beautifully with the ideas we have discussed on the Brain Booster of ‘accumulating GOOD days’

46:10

Today on the Brain Booster we have one of the true legends of the game of golf Bob Vokey. One of the game’s great golf club designers with a special focus on the short game. You will have heard of Vokey wedges. You will have seen Vokey wedges in many pro’s shops you have visited. You may even own some of his wedges yourself.

If any of you have an interest in lower score out on the course then Bob’s wisdom will help you in your quest. Bob’s incredible PASSION for the game has always endured. We take a wonderful trip from the early days of his career.

The influence of his father

The time spent with some of the greatest short game players of all time like Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins and Tom Kite

Most wonderful of all the time spent with Seve Ballesteros

How he listened to these great players to develop his own ideas and design

The importance of LISTENING

Again a common theme on the Brain Booster the effect of being around GOOD PEOPLE and the influence they can have on us

Sliders and Diggers – Which one are you?

The importance of getting fitted for your short game clubs

The need to understand EXACTLY what BOUNCE actually is

How to adapt to differing course conditions

Different grasses, different challenges

How we can get so off track if we don’t understand how to actually use the tools in our hand

The inevitable highs and lows

How his early days had him playing lots of varied sports

Developing all round ability

The Power of thought and how it creates your world – Dicken Bettinger #178
01:01:16

Today we have on the show Dicken Bettinger We go into some fascinating areas discussing the power of thought and the effect it has on your game and on your life. We discuss the origins of the THREE PRINCIPLES as proposed by Syd Banks

Dicken became a licensed clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Twenty-eight years ago he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience.

Dicken had finally found universal principles that he could teach anyone.  He was grateful to find something that was simple in nature yet had the profound effect of raising the quality of a person’s life.

He feels fortunate that for 23 years he was able to learn directly from Sydney Banks.

In 2008 Dicken received a Certificate of Competency from Mr. Banks authorizing him to teach the Three Principles.

We discuss:

How thought creates our reality

The nature of our mind

How it is futile to try to ‘control’ your mind

To be able to let the mind just ‘be’ and get on with the task at hand

How the wisdom of the body can be encouraged

The freedom of PLAY

This is a wonderful session with Dicken

He is clearly a man of great integrity and you can pick up from the delivery of his words just how much he embodies the work of Syd Banks

You can only gain by enjoying the episode

Seve – His life through the lens – Dave Cannon #177
51:29

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by one of the world’s greatest sports photographers Dave Cannon. To pay tribute to the legendary Seve Ballesteros.

Dave has produced a masterpiece of a book called ‘Seve – His life through the lens’ containing some of the most wonderfully iconic pictures of the great man.

From his early days in Perdrena, Spain through a wonderful career on the European and PGA Tour to the tragic loss of his life ten years ago to the ravages of brain cancer.

Perhaps the single most iconic golf picture of all time, the ‘matador pose’ as Seve holed the winning putt on the final green at St Andrews in 1984 was taken by Dave Cannon. He shares his anxiety of wondering if he had ‘got’ the picture in the pre digital technology days of rolls of film and dark room development.

We get to look back on Dave’s amazing career and how almost by accident he became a great sports photographer.

The people who helped him along the way. The building of his skill and his craft.

So many parallels to building skill in your own game or your own business.

The link with his own golf and then ultimately to the great friendship he developed with Seve Ballesteros over many glorious years.

We discuss a very moving story of Dave spending a day photographing Seve on the beach at his home in Pedrena.

Going back to the place where it all began.

Learning to play the game with a rusty old 3 iron on the beach in Northern Spain

The sheer delight Seve had recreating those iconic moments as he made his own ‘golf world’, of self made holes and flags on the windswept beach.

It is a moving, funny and sad story all at the same time as we ponder the cruel way he was taken from us at such an early age.

As we have said before on the Brain Booster reminding us all of our mortality and the absolute precious nature of time and opportunity.

How much of a dedicated family man Seve was and how he loved to spend time with his own children. His radiant smile was never to be forgotten and his legacy to the game of golf will stand for all time.

It is important to keep the memory alive for the current generation to understand just what an influence he was.

The book is literally a work of art.

Just for TODAY – Karl Morris #176
17:22

From time to time I get some requests to do a solo podcast to summarize some of the previous few week’s sessions. So here we go!

We go into my trip to see Vin Harris up in the remote hills of Scotland

We discuss the early days at Samye Ling – Building the Buddhist monastery

His main teacher Akong Rinpoche

His incredible life and what his ideas can teach us all

A fascinating story

I get the chance also to discuss with you the concept of

JUST FOR TODAY

We have for a long time on the Brain Booster looked at the idea of accumulating GOOD DAYS

It sounds utterly simple yet the practical application of it can be a really BIG challenge

Each day we are on ‘auto pilot’

We do what we do

We do what we have always done

Patterns keep repeating

Mistakes made and opportunities missed

So much of our day COUL be influenced by a single shift

If the PERSON we are was different

What would it be like if JUST FOR TODAY you decided to be CURIOUS with all of your lessons

Or you played golf JUST FOR TODAY with a sense of FREEDOM

Or just for today you made the decision to be GRATEFUL

One focus multiple benefits

The idea of ‘just for today’ is a really simple one

Yet I have found over and over again with many players and coaches it can be immensely beneficial

Aim to give it a try

Trust and Let Go – Peter Ballingall #175
38:41

Today we have on the Brain Booster a wonderful man in the shape of Peter Ballingall.

Peter has just recently released a great book called ‘Trust and Let Go’

A collection of his thoughts about coaching over the past 50 years or so.

The title is wonderful and sums up what we could all consider as a useful direction to go with our game and indeed our life.

Trust and Let Go!

With Peter I had the chance to discuss his great career and the influence of certain people along the way.

Not least the great John Jacobs

Peter had the opportunity as a young golf pro to work for and with John.

It must have been an incredible time.

Yet Peter took that opportunity with both hands

He made the most of an opportunity presented by fate.

It is a great message to us all

When the chance comes along to take it with both hands

Trust and Let Go!

Peter went on to run incredibly successful golf schools over many years at Barnham Broom in Norfolk

He was a pioneer in the world of golf schools

More recently he has been in Spain at El Rompido

A beautiful part of the world still coaching as enthusiastically as ever

In our session Peter’s passion shines through

His insights are very valuable

You will gain a lot from listening to his wise words

What is GREAT coaching – Fred Shoemaker #174
01:05:12

Today we welcome back on to the podcast a great friend of the Brain Booster, Fred Shoemaker.

Since spending time at his Extraordinary Golf School over twenty years ago Fred has continued to be an incredible influence on my coaching and my life in general.

We had a truly wonderful conversation, an hour of time just literally disappeared.

It was an absorbing conversation which hadn’t been planned in any way shape or form. We just bounced ideas of each other with a starting point of ‘what makes a great coach?’

As Fred discusses a great coach is NOT someone who is just spouting a formula. Not someone who is passing on just ‘information’.

The latest theory of what is the correct method.

Not a person who is assessing if a student is doing it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

A great coach is someone providing an environment where a student can explore his or her own personal experience.

To be able to gain genuine and beneficial feedback on what is ACTUALLY going on as opposed to what you THINK is going on.

To increase awareness.

We look into the nature of the mind and all the words and articles that have been written about it.

Yet ultimately the question comes to a fundamental on ‘Do you have a mind? Or Are you your mind?

Difficult concepts to get your head around

They are some deep questions

Challenging concepts

Yet as Fred says to be able to recognise the difference between the ‘noise’ the mind is always creating and genuinely beneficial thought is a tremendous skill to develop and encourage.

We talk about the dissatisfaction in the game and what is the root cause of this.

Even given we are just coming through the worst crisis since the second world war many people are still finding so many ways to be dissatisfied.

We look at the comparison game and why that is so destructive

It was truly a wonderful session which you will gain so much from

How Jeremy used just 15 minutes per day to become a guitar playing band member

The value of PERSISTENCE

How it really does add up

Developing SHOTS

How many SHOTS do you need to become a decent golfer?

Understand the mysteries of your UNCONSCIOUS mind – John Bargh #172
42:34

Today we welcome back a great friend of the podcast John Bargh Professor of social psychology at Yale University

I always really enjoy my time with John and the opportunity to pick the brains of one of the most influential minds in psychology today.

John’s book ‘Before you know it’ is essential reading.

In which he goes into so many fascinating avenues to explore how our unconscious mind navigates the world.

How we are so much influenced by our surroundings.

How we can be triggered into action by other people

How words written in our office can affect our motivations.

To become better acquainted with your unconscious mind is to be better armed with the challenges of life

We look into ways that you can better arrange your world

How you can increase your motivation to do what YOU want to do with your life

Not to be just carried away with the whims and wishes of your unconscious programmes

We talk about John’s biggest influences in his long and distinguished career

The effect of lockdown on our mental well being

What the future may hold for us post covid

A really interesting session with a fascinating man

John A. Bargh is a social psychologist currently working at Yale where he has formed the Automaticity in Cognition, Motivation, and Evaluation (ACME) Laboratory. John’s work focuses on automaticity and unconscious processing as a method to better understand social behaviour  as well as philosophical topics such as free will. Much of John’s work investigates whether actions and behaviours thought to be under volitional control may result from automatic interpretations of and reactions to external stimuli, such as words.

The Mind Factor Mindfulness Online Certification

It is a really exciting project

To allow you to study Mindfulness for yourself at your own pace in your own time

Vin is a friend of the podcast and we welcome him back to discuss how Mindfulness can be utilised effectively in the coaching world.

How can we become more Mindful in our coaching?

We discuss how David Bowie had an indirect link in with Vin’s 40 year journey learning and applying Mindfulness to his life and his business.

The early influences and how the study was developed through spending time with some of the great Buddhist teachers.

How the INTENTION of the teacher is everything

How that intention to have the best interest of the student is a central key to being a really effective coach

The need to create environments for people to learn

Not just to give out more and more information

To help students understand where they ARE before you try to move them anywhere else

The ability to be present to what is actually happening right now

You only have to listen to Vin for a few moments to understand the wisdom and practical experience he brings to the subject

His is not sharing his knowledge from a theoretical perspective but from a real world life experience

53:56

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome back my good friend PGA Tour coach Randy Joyner

Randy has been having some amazing results with his coaching of late with PGA Tour Players, College Players as well as club players

We get the chance to discuss how Randy has used Mind Factor techniques to really make a difference

The conversion in his teaching from one of being technique driven to PLAYING driven

Spending time on the GOLF Course

Creating shots

How the SHOT can create the swing IF you know the right ingredients

How IMAGERY can be used to unlock your potential as a golfer

The amazing impact that EXTERNAL focus has on results

Why there is so much more freedom when you develop the skill of ACCEPTANCE

It was incredible to hear Randy talk about his evolution as a coach and what YOU can learn from this either as a player or a coach

How saying very little is perhaps the ultimate goal as a coach

How we need to understand the role of FORGETTING

Why simple is not simplistic

A really great session

Dylan Bawden – ‘Joseph Dylan Educare – Hit the Ball’ #168
37:19

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by coach Dylan Bawden

I caught up with him to discuss the contents of his great book ‘Hit the Ball’

What a GREAT title for a golf book!!

We discuss the problems and limitations of coaching with models

The ‘scientific method’ of thinking which is so entrenched in the West and for so many can lead to endless frustration.

Over emphasis on what is ‘right’

Instead of exploring what is right for YOU

‘Hit the Ball’

it should be as simple as that but we find ever more ingenious ways to make the game more complicated.

Dylan has some great ideas to remedy this.

You will enjoy and get a lot from the session

Dylan Bawden  has been awarded Fellow membership of the PGA, trained with Vivien Saunders OBE, British Open Winner.

Studied Batchelor of Science in Golf at Kingston university. After 20 years of research in the Art of Learning golf he has finally published the book Joseph Dylan Educure.

It’s a story about the origins of Western Education and how it has been a problem for Golf learning.

Dylan is based in Vienna, Austria at GC Spillern.

Kendal McWade – Bryson De Chambeau and Instinctive Golf – Could they actually be similar? #167
57:38

Kendal McWade – Bryson De Chambeau and Instinctive Golf – Could they actually be similar?

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome a great friend of the show back for the THIRD time Kendal McWade from Instinctive Golf.

We had a fantastic discussion as always.

The golf world is talking again about Bryson after his win at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Not only the win but THAT incredible tee shot across the water on the par 5 sixth hole.

What could seem further apart than the scientific dissections of Bryson and the Instinctive Golf of Kendal McWades’ approach?

Well maybe a LOT more than you think.

I asked Kendal some questions and as ever he came up with some fascinating answers.

In many ways Bryson is instinctive in the sense that he is very much doing it HIS way.

He is on a quest of SELF MASTERY

As we have reinforced so many times on the Brain Booster if there is a secret to golf it isn’t about finding the way to play the game but much more about you uncovering YOUR way to play.

With this in mind I asked Kendal about some really important explorations

The idea that most of the time in golf instruction we are focusing on the solution before we know what the problem actually is!!

What is the TASK?

How do I use the TOOL (the golf club) in my hand to get the task done?

What are the key INFLUENCES I need to focus on to get the job done?

Can I set myself free to uncover MY way of getting the task completed efficiently?

Why FEEL is really the truth you are looking to experience.

A really great session with an outstanding coach.

Are YOU going to join us

Shawn Clement – The WISDOM of your body – It’s a LOT smarter than we think #164
56:08

Today’s Brain Booster is a great session with highly renowned Canadian coach Shawn Clement

He has some wonderful points to make about WHERE you focus your attention when trying to improve your game.

A common theme on the Brain Booster

He has some wonderful insights at his website www.wisdomingolf.com

As Shawn said:

The most important tool that started me properly on this journey was the experience I had from age 17 with the Canadian Ski Patrol and their relentless passion in making sure you knew what you were doing when treating a victim with a broken limb on the ski hill before transporting to hospital with vital information for the Emergency MD.

This information helped guide me through the maze of golf instruction that was based purely on opinions that were based on assumptions of how the human body works. To this day, we do not have any documents, seminars, manuals on basic anatomy in the field of golf instruction which is very disturbing considering we are on the front lines of your abilities to learn this game and play for life!

WISDOM IN GOLF, where the secrets to your best golf game bliss are backed by science, neurology, medicine, and all other sports and disciplines.

We discuss:

  • Why focusing on body part manipulation will always end in disaster.
  • Discover that simply changing your focus to simple tasks will help your performance soar, especially under pressure!
  • How you are NOT DEFECTIVE and how you have been portrayed as needing to be fixed all these decades!
  • Why YOUR ANATOMY WAS MADE TO PERFORM GOLF MOVEMENTS.

49:26

It is wonderful today to have on the Brain Booster one of the top sports psychologist working in professional sport Dan Abrahams.

Dan Abrahams is a sport psychologist working alongside individuals, teams, coaches and organisations globally. He is known for his passion to de-mystify sport psychology and for creating simple to use performance techniques.

He is the author of four best-selling sport psychology books and is the founder of both the Dan Abrahams Soccer Academy and The Sport Psych Show podcast. A former professional golfer and PGA qualified, Dan has a First Class Honours degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in Sport Psychology

It was great to catch up with Dan so he could share his own story about how he developed his successful career and how his own approaches have evolved.

I really admire how he has taken his knowledge and applied it to the real world in sports such as golf, football and rugby.

We talk at length about the attitude of different sports to working on mental game skills.

The barriers

The challenges and the opportunities

Dan has been working at the coal face for many years now and his wealth of knowledge really does shine through as does his passion to really make a difference to the teams and athletes he works with.

From his early career as a professional golfer he shares with us how his own experiences of setbacks have helped shape his approach.

John Glenn – Could COLOUR transform your GOLF, learning and performance? #162
40:43

Many of you may remember Louis Oosthuizen and the RED DOT!

Winning the British Open in 2010

The use of colour in performance has always fascinated me and today we welcome to the podcast John Glenn who will take that exploration to another level.

How could the use of colour potentially transform your game?

John has spent the best part of 20 years involved in the golf industry looking at ways to enhance learning and performance.

In November 2016 together with PGA Professional Kevin Merry, they would spend a lot of time experimenting and look for a way to simplify how Golf was being taught, as they felt it was becoming too technical for many golfers. This would lead them to design and develop their very own Teaching Concept using a unique externally focused colour coded system that would prove to change the way people play, gaining instant feedback and fast track results.

Kevin and John would progress their ideas from a few prototypes to a reality and shortly after then forming the company Colour Path Golf. They both decided to leave their coaching roles in 2018 to focus full time on developing the concept on a global scale.

Johns mission is to bring more people into the game and make starting and improving at golf a whole lot easier through simple to follow visual instructions which to date is proving to make a huge difference with the teaching concept being delivered by a team of Colour Path Golf certified instructors worldwide.

John has a clear objective in the world of coaching, to continue to build on developing the ultimate coaches community/networking group where best practice and new creative ideas are shared regularly through teaching in the language of colour.

David Walsh – What the ART of writing can teach us about performance #161
53:12

I am really excited to bring you today’s guest David Walsh.

David is the sports writer you will have all seen at the back page of your Sunday Times. His weekly reports cover so many differing sports and they are always a wonderful read.

He is the author of a number of GREAT books most notably ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ where he details his coverage of the Lance Armstrong saga and how he spent so many years being vilified for an opinion which in the end proved 100% correct. The fact he stuck with the his own convictions against all the odds is truly inspiring.

His latest book ‘The Russian Affair’ is an extraordinary account of the love affair and marriage between Vitaly Stepanov an anti doping official and Yuliya Rusanova who was a Russian 800 metre who was herself doping for many years.

We cover so much wonderful ground in this podcast as David talks about the ‘Art of Writing’ and how he personally set about developing his own personal craft.

There are many parallels with this and developing your own game or business.

The need to immerse yourself in your own development

How surrounding yourself with the right people to gain the right knowledge is paramount.

David talks candidly about following in the footsteps of legendary sports writer Hugh McIlveney

We look at the golfers who have impressed David over the years and he gives a very interesting take on the concept of ‘heroes’.

You will really enjoy and benefit from your time with David Walsh

Doug Lemov – The Coach’s Guide to Teaching #160
43:20

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by a VERY special guest Doug Lemov.

Doug is a former   teacher and school principal. He helped found Uncommon Schools, a network of high performing schools in under privileged communities.

His book ‘Teach like a champion 2.0’ describes techniques used by exceptional teachers. It has sold more than a million copies and been translated into a dozen languages.

His other books include ‘Perfect Practice : 42 Rules for getting better and ‘Reading Reconsidered’. He played football at Hamilton college where he says he was the worst player of the decade!

His latest book which we discuss today is called ‘The Coach’s Guide to Teaching’

Doug has had a major influence on many teachers around the world and our discussion today can only help you in your quest to be better at ANYTHING.

We had a wonderful chat around some key elements of Doug’s book.

Most notably the area around ‘forgetting’.

As coaches and players we ignore this crucial element at our peril.

The fact is we forgot most things.

Most of our learning does not stick.

To be efficient on the field of play learning needs to be embedded into our long term memory.

We want and need to be on auto pilot to be able to perform at our best.

Trying to hold strategy in short term memory is a poor way to perform.

Doug reveals some brilliant strategies to make learning stick.

To make your training session more effective.

This is so important to consider.

A great session with a great teacher!!

Michel Put – The Moment of Truth #159
47:57

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Certified Mind Factor coach

Michel Put (50) is a PGA Golf professional, certified Mindfactor coach,  entrepreneur, golfer, guide and organizer of various music events near Amsterdam. As a coach, he has been looking for the Holy Grail in golf instruction for over a quarter of a century. How to make golfers more consistent. Achieving more joy and happiness in their game.

In 2015 he came into contact with a concept that turned out to contain this holy grail. A concept with which everything that is complicated can be simplified.

MOT, Moment Of Truth, since 2019 transformed into: True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen….The new way to play golf..

Unfortunately, as a cross thinker he was also denounced, mocked and even banned from the sports world. And the more he stood for his philosophy, the more he appeared to stand for it alone. Yet he also managed to find his way there. Because he says; "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

Recently his company teamed up with Cobra/Puma golf. The concept of ONE Length golf clubs completes the philosophy of the method of True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen. And fits perfectly with our core values: innovative, fun, liberating and rebellious.

In this podcast

When the light bulb was invented in 1878, the world was turned upside down. Candle manufacturers were angry, and many consumers were skeptical. In this podcast I am going to talk to Michel Put. Someone who comes up with a similar story some 140 years later. Together with Joost Steenkamer, colleague  professional and Dutch Golf Federation talent coach, he developed a new way of playing golf. And this time too the world is turned upside down. And this time too, people are angry. What did the gentlemen discover?

Listen to Michel's remarkable story and learn how to get more joy in your golf and in your life.

You will also learn in this podcast:

  • The components of Deep Practice.
  • Why you should make training more difficult than reality
  • How to accelerate your learning process ten times faster/Myeline
  • Why you don't see what you don't know

Got excited and want to know more about True Groove?

Marcus Bell – Zen Golf Mechanics #158
01:12:58

I have known Marcus Bell a long time and it is always wonderful to chat with him about his approach to developing the game of golf. Marcus is a deep thinker and I know that you will find a tremendous benefit from listening today to some of his ideas.

Marcus is Director of Coaching for ZEN Golf and a PGA Professional for over 20 years. His non-linear style of coaching is gaining wide recognition through his fast growing You Tube Channel ZEN Golf Mechanic. The results speak for themselves with a new student's lesson being posted each week showing huge improvements in performance for players of all abilities and aspirations.

Marcus has a Masters degree in Sports Biomechanics and has conducted and consulted in many research studies in golf, particularly with 3D and forceplate technologies. These studies have focused primarily on lower body mechanics and their effect on full body kinematics and kinetics. It is this research that has supported the development of this full swing coaching application that we recognise as ZEN Golf Mechanics where ecological psychology meets sports biomechanics to foster optimal skill acquisition.

For information on lessons please follow the link....

https://zengolfmechanics.youbookappointments.co.uk/

Marcus shares his incredible background in the game of golf and the people who have helped him along the way develop as a golf coach.

This hugely reinforced a key theme of the Brain Booster. The importance of others and the people you surround yourself with.

Who are you learning from?

Who are your influences?

What are you prepared to do to improve both as a player and as a coach?

During the session together Marcus discussed his ideas around how movement is generated. How it is much more natural than we might think.

How we often get in the way of this natural motion.

And more importantly what you can do to reconnect with it.

The Spacing Effect

The Variability Effect

The correct Challenge Point

How to set up a LEARNING ENVIRONMENT on the range

The ‘transfer appropriate process’

Looking at TENSION and TEMPO as a focus of attention and why this can give a great return on your investment of time

How mechanics can actually improve as a result of TENSION awareness

How trying to ‘keep’ a swing feeling is the wrong approach

How a process orientation can lead to MASTERY

How we look for happiness in all of the wrong places

The magic of ‘this day’ focus

How trying to ‘keep’ a swing feeling is the wrong approach

Just a really great and wide ranging session covering so many nuggets of gold

Iain has clearly spent his life searching for better learning approaches

Winning your FIRST European Tour event – Ryan Fox #155
39:05

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by popular European Tour player Ryan Fox. We have been working together for a couple of years and it was great to catch up with Ryan and discuss his maiden European Tour win and well as some of the challenges after that. Also the response of golf to the global pandemic.

We also got the chance to look at Ryan’s fascinating sporting background. How important sporting genetics are we cannot say 100% for certain. But what we can say is that the Kiwi has a pretty good set!

Ryan’s grandfather Merv played cricket for New Zealand back in the 1930’s and 1940’s in the days when you had to travel for weeks on end by boat to get to play test matches against England. His father Grant Fox was an outstanding rugby player and represented the New Zealand All Blacks on 46 occasions and was a member of the team that won the inaugural World Cup in 1987

We had a good discussion on the concept of individuality

What it takes to win your first European Tour event

How to look at your game so you can uncover YOUR way to play your best

Just because everyone else seems to be doing it doesn’t make it right for you

How it is vital to separate the game of golf you play from your identity as a human being

When the boundary blurs we put way too much pressure on ourselves

How to connect back to a sense of fun in creating shots

How the bad times have been a great opportunity for Ryan to work out what truly matters

The future and what it COULD look like

Can a ‘quick’ fix actually be for the long terms? – A radical look at golf coaching with Adam Young #154
55:13

One of the most popular podcasts we have done in the past few years was the session with Adam Young.

So I thought it was high time I had him back again to share more of his great insights into how he approaches his own coaching.

We had a wonderful conversation.

Full of first hand ‘at the coal face’ real world experience.

Amongst many other things we talked about ‘QUICK FIXES’

And the proposal that a quick fix could be more permanent.

How could this be possible?

Does it not go against all we ‘know’ about game improvement?

Adam describes a great story of working with a player with the shanks and how he had literally got to the end of the road.

Desperate to just give him something

Adam gave a ‘quick fix’

Have a listen to the outcome of that lesson

You will be surprised

You will be fascinated

You will question

During a great session we cover this and so much more

Adam is a very deep thinker about the game

He is incredibly well read and well researched

Yet at the heart of all of his work is the key premise

‘Does this work?’

Does this actually help the student get better

A Constraints led approach to golf coaching – with Graeme McDowall #153
42:48

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by another Graeme McDowall!

This time it is golf coach Graeme.

We had a tremendous conversation about his new book ‘A constraints led approach to golf coaching’

A book written in conjunction with Ian Renshaw and Peter Arnott

Graeme describes a familiar story from his own game of trying to ‘build a swing’

How he then struggled to take that swing onto the golf course.

Great in practice

Not so good on the course

A familiar theme!!

This led Graeme into a world of exploration as to why this lack of TRANSFER was occurring

Graeme has an MPhil in Sports Coaching from the University of Birmingham and is a full-time Golf and Sports Coaching lecturer at the SRUC in Scotland. He is also an associate lecturer and a PhD researcher at the University of Abertay Dundee.

So we got the opportunity to discuss areas such as

The effects of ENVIRONMENT of learning

How you can develop more golf SKILLS

How to create effective learning environments

How we then learn to interact and develop skills in that environment

How coaching should be more about setting problems as opposed to always giving solutions

His wonderful book is available on Amazon

Changing your swing with less not more thinking – Kelvin Kelley #152
43:40

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by Performance coach Kelvin Kelley

Kelvin is a Class A PGA golf professional in San Francisco, California. He has taught at some of the top golf clubs in the Bay Area, which include The Olympic Club and Sonoma.

He has also written several instructional articles for Golfwrx.com and Secret Golf.

Kelvin works with his students to develop efficient motion.

Besides swing and short game instruction, Kelvin works with his players a LOT on the GOLF course.

As we discuss seeing the golfer in the TRUE environment. Seeing how a player actually reacts.

This includes mental preparation, developing practice routines and course strategizing. www.kelleygolf.com

We discuss how you can develop your game with better training.

How if you do wish to change some of your motion it is better to do as much as possible in the set up to TRIGGER better motion as opposed to consciously trying to manipulate the club into various positions.

How the set up can dictate so much of your active motion

Hitting angles and their effect

How the downswing should be a reaction not a recovery

Working with an impact bag

A great session and a perfect time of year to look at some of these concepts

‘Liquid Thinking’ What is it and how can YOU apply it? – with Professor Damian Hughes #151
01:10:23

Today we are joined on the ‘Brain Booster’ by Professor Damian Hughes

Damian is an international speaker and best selling author who combines his practical and academic background within sport.

He is the author of EIGHT best selling books including Liquid Thinking and Liquid Leadership.

He is the co host of the High Performance Podcast with Jake Humphries.

A podcast I would highly recommend.

He is currently serving as a member of the coaching team for Scotland Rugby Union and Canberra Raiders

We had a fantastic discussion looking at Damian’s approach in numerous sports such as Football, Rugby and Boxing.

We talked at great length about his upbringing and how the world of boxing had such a deep imprint on his philosophy.

How the ‘environment’ of the boxing world shaped his own behaviours.

The impact of ‘stories’

The genius of simplicity

How to shape your culture

How to avoid being lost in outcomes

Damian has invested so much in his own development as a coach.

Being prepared to travel to spend time with some of the legends of sport such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Jonny Wilkinson

We talk about ‘non negotiable’ behaviour and how this simple premise can have such an impact on your life and your results.

The Lost Art of Golf – What difference can it make for YOUR golf – with Gary Nicol #150
01:01:03

Today we are joined on the ‘Brain Booster’ by a good friend of the show and co - author of the ‘Lost Art Series’ Gary Nicol.

On the previous occasions Gary has been on the show the feedback has been tremendous.

Gary himself spent over twenty years on the European Tour coaching some of the best players in the world.

You don’t stay in such an environment for so long unless you get RESULTS.

Gary is not one of the ‘latest guru’s’ who appoint themselves as an expert by virtue of a social media presence. Gary served his time at the coal face of the game finding out by direct experience what did and did not have value.

His experience was a vital ingredient in the formation of the key elements to the Lost Art series.

We have collaborated for a number of years now and as we have worked together the synergy in our approach has grown.

Since the launch of the ‘Lost Art of Putting” and the ‘Lost Art of Golf’ we have been overwhelmed by the response.

So many golfers getting in touch to express how the ideas in the book have resonated so deeply.

We got the chance to discuss this in our time and it only reinforced the sense that so many golfers want a break from the shackles imposed upon them by so much technical coaching.

We live in a world of information overload and perhaps more than ever it seems golfers are crying out for an approach that is both practical and applicable on the GOLF COURSE

Gary reflected on some of the key elements he has learned over the years and we got the chance to discuss some new ideas around practice and the way to spend your winter time more effectively.

It was as always a real pleasure to spend time with Gary again developing the ‘Lost Art’ story.

I know you will enjoy and benefit from his vast experience and wisdom

The Road to becoming a Major winner – Graeme McDowell #149
52:57

Today on the Brain Booster we have an extra special guest in the shape of former US Open champion Graeme McDowell.

I have worked with G Mac now for the best part of 18 years and what a journey it has been.

It was wonderful to take the time with Graeme to look back over the story so far and for him to reflect so honestly about the key lessons he has learned in his time out on the PGA and European Tour.

I promise you the insights he shares with us have the potential to make a BIG difference to the way you think about your game.

We discuss :

The key influences in the early days of his career – the vital role of mentors

The role of his environment

Growing up on the beautiful links of Royal Portrush and the effect that had

Wanting to get better and being prepared to work at his ‘mental game’

The role ‘strong images’ have played in his mind. This ONE insight alone is GOLD

How under the most extreme pressure of Majors and Ryder cups how he has still been able to function despite the discomfort

We talk about how and why effective routines have proven so important.

What he has learned about ‘tendencies under pressure’. This again is a KEY element if you want to improve your game.

When he had lost his putting and in danger of losing playing status how ONE simple technique turned things around

It was a really great conversation

Time flew

The topics flowed

You will gain a LOT for your own game and your desire to get closer to your true ability

Enjoy

The Science of GREAT putting – Dr David Moffat #148
56:08

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Dr David Moffat to explore some scientific studies surrounding great putting.

It will NOT be what you think!!

After a successful military and corporate career David attended university and learned how much scientific research there was on golf putting.  He figured that all golfers should have access to the science that differs from the instructional literature leading coaches and tour players give us, which is often perceived as anecdotal.

So, on completion his putting related PhD he created PerformancePutting.com with one intention - to become an online putting coach and provide the global golfing community with scientific & evidenced-based coaching.

David’s coaching philosophy is pragmatic which involves the use of a practical approach to understanding the putting environment with an emphasis on evaluating actions and beliefs based on their consequences.

We had the chance to discuss some great concepts with David as a result of his research.

Do you REALLY need to look at the ball when putting

It has been such a ‘fundamental’ to a lot of putting instruction.

Is it necessary for EVERYONE?

Sergio Garcia didn’t

He won the US Masters putting with his eyes closed

Could this be an option for you?

How can you establish YOUR own unique style of putting?

How we interfere with natural processes to block our putting ability

What could be a more effective way to practice your putting?

Foot awareness and Foot Health – Far more important than you think – Dr Emily Splichal #147
40:07

We have spent a lot of time on the Brain Booster looking at our brain and its effect on our game. Today we move to the other end of the body to our FEET.

I think you will be amazed by today’s guest Dr Emily Splichal as she explains just how important our feet are to performance in so many varied ways.

Apparently the great Sam Snead when he felt his game was a little off and his timing was out would take off his shoes and hit some balls in his bare feet.

Emily explains why this would have worked so well and what was going on to give ‘The Slammer’ such an advantage.

We get the chance to go into how movement efficiency is influenced so much by your feet.

How the timing of your movements in your swing will be affecting by your feet.

There is a lot of talk in golf about ‘ground reaction’ forces.

Emily explains how and why the feet are so central to these principles.

The link between your feet and your CORE

What a good day looks like for your FEET

How you should spend more time BAREFOOT

How and why this is so helpful to your overall health.

How you can begin the day with specific foot awareness exercises.

How we can link MINDFULNESS and the FOOT

The benefits of foot awareness and training to develop attentional control

The benefits of MINIMAL shoes for your gym workout

Emily was a brilliant guest and a good example of what we have looked at on the Brain Booster of the need to seek the ‘non obvious’

To be prepared to look into areas you had not considered before to gain areas of growth and improvement

Today’s show will REALLY get you to think differently

Responding to the ultimate life challenges – Ian St John #146
49:16

Today we have with us on the Brain Booster a special guest in the shape of PGA Professional Ian St John.

Ian is the joint host with Harry Ewing of the ‘3 of the tee podcast’.

We first met a number of years ago at a seminar in Ireland and have stayed in touch ever since.

Ian is passionate about coaching and game improvement and has had some wonderful guests on his podcast show.

We talk during our time together about how Ian’s world was literally turned upside down when he received a diagnosis of advanced cancer.

He woke up one morning and EVERYTHING had changed

His whole reality changed and he was confronted by both treatment of the cancer and the ensuing paralysis.

Ian talked honestly about his treatment and how he used some mental game techniques to get through the really dark times.

The ability to challenge some of the ‘automatic thoughts’ and how he could begin to change his STORY

The value of the WRITTEN word

How writing out his thoughts really helped in a profound way.

How he began to build HOPE.

Simple rituals

The ability to BE on THIS day and in THIS moment

The need to PLAN what a good day looks like.

Ian highlighted how ideas that people often dismiss in terms of their golf have proven immensely beneficial to him in the greatest of life challenges he has found himself.

We talked of the future and the love of the game of golf that has grown even stronger.

You cannot help but be inspired by Ian St John and his words of wisdom can help anyone facing challenges either on or off the golf course.

Acceptance – Maybe the ULTIMATE mental game skill with Karl Morris #145
16:12

Over the past number of weeks on the Brain Booster we have had a reoccurring theme. That of ACCEPTANCE.

Steven Yellin mentioned it as a pre requisite for the emergence of fluid motion.

Dr Joe Parent mentioned it as a requirement to experience Zen Golf.

I wanted today then to take the opportunity to dive deeper into what acceptance is and perhaps more importantly what it isn’t.

So much of the benefits of acceptance are paradoxical in nature.

We need to be careful we don’t confuse acceptance with resignation. We are also not in any way saying acceptance is not about aiming for good results.

The Brain Booster is all about performance.

What I do firmly believe is that acceptance can be a ‘reverse engineering’ of results.

It can actually provide you with the environment whereby results emerge.

In today’s show I look at how acceptance can actually help you to swing the club better

Get more from your coaching

Develop other areas of your life with acceptance

How acceptance leads to ACTION

How you create true freedom

Hopefully today’s show brings together lots of the key concepts we have been discussing for many months on the Brain Booster

Acceptance needs commitment and DAILY intention

It is really beneficial to create accountability with a coach or mentor

Zen Golf with Dr Joe Parent #144
59:37

Today we joined on the Brain Booster by Dr Joe Parent.

He is the author of one of the most successful mental game books of all time.

Zen Golf was published over twenty years ago and still continues to sell worldwide.

A new generation of players are enjoying a book published well before they were born!

I had a great conversation with Dr Joe about the origins of the book and the influences he has had to his work.

Joe teaches from a Buddhist philosophy applied to golf.

The principles of mindfulness, meditation and awareness are key factors to his work.

The great aspect to his teaching is he clearly comes from a practical and applied background.

All of his ideas have been tested in the laboratory of real life.

Out on the golf course, in the boardroom, real life experience not just theory.

We got the chance to discuss his work with Vijay Singh and the journey to World No 1 when the game of golf was being totally dominated by Tiger Woods.

What Vijay applied from the book that made such a difference to his game.

How many of the key principles of mindfulness can be so helpful to your game?

This is fundamental wisdom that has been around for many thousands of years but often ignored in the modern world of complexity for complexity sake.

Why there is still a reluctance to look at the mental game and how it is too easy to blame all bad shots on your technique when in fact the ‘state’ you are in does not ALLOW you to access the swing you already have.

The concept of ‘being present’ sounds so simple yet so few really understand what it actually means.

Joe talks about specific ways to BE on a golf course.

The opportunity golf gives us to learn so much about ourselves.

How the breath is one of the single most potent areas of focus to release your performance.

It was a delight to speak to Dr Joe.

His wisdom will make a difference to your game.

The Secrets of World Class Performers – With Dr Fred Travis and Steven Yellin #143
56:52

Building excellence through Mind – Brain development.

A couple of weeks ago we had on the show Steven Yellin talking about his book ‘Simplicity’ and discussing his concepts around ‘The Fluid Motion Factor’

It was a great show and we had a lot of good feedback.

Some of Steven’s concepts around fluid motion seemed to really resonate with so many players.

The idea that we don’t ‘lose’ our swing but we lose ACCESS to that swing.

A huge influence on Steven Yellin’s work has been Dr Fred Travis.

Fred is a neuroscientist and he was able to describe WHY from a brain perspective WHY Steven’s program would work.

I managed to get then both together and we had a wonderful discussion about optimising your BRAIN PERFORMANCE.

Fred explained in such a lucid way HOW and WHY we get in our own way in terms of performance.

And more importantly how we can get out of our own way!

We looked in even more detail as to why ACCEPTANCE of outcome could be THE most important mental game skill and what is happening in the brain when we are in a state of acceptance.

We looked into the immense benefits of MEDITATION

In particular Trancendental Meditation

How to access the brain states more often that will encourage a ZONE experience.

Why having a daily practice is SO vitally important for long term development and improvement of your game.

It was a wonderful conversation.

Both men bring a true warmth and passion to their work.

You can only improve by looking into what they had to say.

How isometrics could transform how you move – More on M.A.T with Ryan Phillips #142
41:26

I just had to get Ryan Phillips back again. The level of interest was very strong.

We had a great response to the show with Ryan Phillips talking about M.A.T. (muscle activation technique).

A lot of interest.

A lot of questions.

A lot of potential opportunity.

Ryan is one of only two trainers certified in M.A.T. in the UK

He was trained by Greg Roskopf in the USA who has had amazing results with athletes for a number of years. Most noted for his recent work and the body transformation of Bryson DeChambau.

Today we explore more about a fascinating subject of how simple isometric exercises can reactivate muscles that have been dormant or imbalanced for years.

Muscle imbalance is a crucial area to consider.

It is at the heart of EFFICIENT movement.

Muscle imbalance creates a LOT of issues.

It is why so many people are training in PAIN

Why so many golfers have to stop playing.

Why there are diminishing returns on your training efforts.

We also look into the possibility of how your current training or stretching COULD be making things worse if you have a muscle imbalance and you are forcing yourself through a range of motion with compensations.

However, once you have activated and balanced your muscle structure with M.A.T. you then potentially make tremendous progress as you can now GAIN so much from whatever mode of training your favour.

I would go as far as to say that anyone who is really keen to get the best from their game should explore the potential with M.A.T.

Essentially what you are doing is providing a tremendous foundation for all of your movement.

You are working from a really solid foundation.

Fascinating area to explore.

‘Simplicity’ – The Fluid Motion Factor with Steven Yellin #141
45:43

It is great to welcome today on the Brain Booster Steven Yellin the author of a wonderful book called ‘Simplicity’.

The content we discuss today could literally transform the way you look at your game and your relationship to your swing and the concepts around ‘technique’.

Steven’s program ‘The Fluid Motion Factor’ has been taught in numerous sports.

I believe this could be a MAJOR contribution in the evolution of coaching.

Right at the heart of Stevens work is the key question:

‘If you could access what you currently own in terms of your golf game would you be happy?’

How many golfers are trying to ‘change’ their swing without EVER getting the best out of what they currently have?

So much of what Steven has written about is based on a deeper understanding of how the brain works to produce a fluid motion.

How we get in the way of the brains innate ability to make a motion.

We discuss critical factors

The role of the Cerebellum – The master KEY to unlocking your game

The Pre Frontal Cortex – How the ‘intellect’ within us all actually gets in the way of sporting progress.

How the brain has an innate ability to ‘self correct’ if it is left to its own devices.

We look into the concept of achieving WHOLENESS with the brain to allow the fluid motion factor to emerge.

The idea that ‘small targets’ COULD be so damaging to your game. How they create a block in the fluid motion.

Why the target is not always your friend and how over emphasis on this can cause you problems.

I firmly believe that Steven has written a book that will become a major contribution to teaching in sport. It is based around how your brain CREATES motion. In so many ways this should be at the front and centre of so many coaching discussions instead of the endless opinions on what the motion needs to look like. The way the brain creates movement or perhaps more importantly how we get in the way of that may well be the defining frontier in the future of the game.

Enjoy todays podcast. You will get a LOT from it.

MCT – Could this be the ultimate fuel for your brain? With Paul Eales, Colm O Donnell and Jake Ashton - Episode 140
44:20

The way you interact with the world, the way you play on a golf course, the results you get in life, is to a very large extent governed by the chemistry of your brain.

If you are not fuelling the brain efficiently then all of the ‘techniques’ you may try to employ will be less than effective.

I am really excited about the research we are presenting today on the Brain Booster about how MCT oils can make SUCH a difference to the effectiveness of your brain on a daily basis.

Today we are joined by

Colm O’Donnell - Founder of Nuroco

Jake Ashton - Lead Researcher of Sports and Exercise Science at Liverpool Hope University

Paul Eales -  European Tour Winner, broadcaster on BBC TV, BBC Radio 5 Live & European Tour Productions. Chief ambassador for Nuroco

We have a very wide ranging discussion about MCT and what it can do for your brain in terms of performance.

Nuroco aims to improve brain function, focus, concentration and overall neurofitness. A background in clinical nutrition inspired a unique new sport supplement that could boost the mental performance of athletes and is now backed by pioneering scientific research.

Already being used by a number of elite professional golfers on the European Tour and Ladies European Tour, Nuroco are ‘driving neurofitness and neuroperformance in sport’.

Nuroco offers a fuel for our brains to ensure our brain is energised and able to perform at it’s best, on and off the course. We also discuss how this alternative energy for the brain bypasses the energy deficit that seems to occur when we age and may help to alleviate or slow the progression of Mild Cognitive Impairment or Alzheimer’s

The value of a mentor to help you achieve your dreams – With Lora Fairclough #139
51:10

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by multiple Ladies European Tour winner and Solheim Cup player Lora Fairclough.

It was great to share time with Lora and look back at the key insights she now has from her playing days and now her own coaching.

By the way to become a Certified Mind Factor Coach, go to

https://themindfactor.net/certification-course-2020/

On this show:

We really look into the value of having a MENTOR

Someone who fully understands you as a person.

Someone who wants to look at the whole picture and not just the isolated motion of the golf swing.

When you ‘know’ the person you are working with has YOUR best interests.

We look at how goals can and sometimes can’t make all of the difference.

How chasing the WRONG goal for you as an individual can be so destructive.

The value of WRITING things down.

My goodness we have touched on this so many times.

Yet I don’t believe you can hear it too often.

The correlation between success and having note taking discipline seems profound.

The principles Lora applied to aim to get the most from EACH day.

It was great to look back on Lora’s playing career.

The challenges.

How one NEGATIVE experience created a mindset that ALLOWED her to WIN

What YOU can learn from this.

A really engaging session from a golfer who has experienced so many levels of the game

Enjoy

On today’s Brain Booster we are joined by Sam Jarman, author of the books ‘The Three Principles of Outstanding Golf’ and ‘Take Relief’.

Sam is an accomplished PGA professional both as a player and a coach.

As a player himself he by his own admission explored a number of ideas and philosophies without any of them making much of a difference.

For him the world started to look differently when he came across ‘The Three Principles’

From the work of Scottish philosopher Syd Banks.

If you haven’t heard of Sydney Banks it is definitely worth your while exploring his work more.

With Sam we get to discuss some of the ideas behind Syd’s work.

Why so many ‘techniques’ both from a swing perspective and a mental game perspective are doomed to fail.

When you attempt to control your thinking with ever more thinking.

You get lost in the search for THE way to do things.

When perhaps a better approach is to understand at a deeper level the way your mind works.

That thoughts will always come along.

You cannot control them.

You cannot stop yourself from thinking.

It is very tough to change the nature of your thinking.

What you can do however is have a different RELATIONSHIP to your thinking.

When you have a different relationship to the way your mind works you potentially open up a wonderful new area of possibility.

Sam explains his own experience with the Three Principles

It is a very interesting session today which will certainly get you to ponder a potential new direction and a set of insights you may not have considered before.

How can we train in a way to gives us a return on our investment of time and money?

How can we better train so we are able to TRANSFER those skills into the real world?

Training is of little to no actual value unless it transfers to the real world environment.

So much time can be wasted with little to no return.

Protecting your greatest asset – Your Healthy Brain with Dr Dale Bredesen #136
43:58

It is a simple fact, without a healthy brain we are going to really struggle to live any form of meaningful life.

Yet how much do we REALLY pay attention to the health of our most prized asset? How much do we really look after our brain?

We should!

Dementia is now the third biggest killer in the USA.

The effects are devastating. All meaningful life evaporates.

I know from first - hand experience with my mother just how bad it can be.

I would not wish it on anyone.

Up to now we have been led to believe there is ‘nothing we can do about it’. That the demise when you develop Alzheimer’s is inevitable.

Today’s guest on the Brain Booster is challenging all of our previous assumptions of what role WE can play in the ongoing health of our brain.

Dr Dale Bredesen has just written a wonderful new book called ‘The End of Alzheimer’s Program’.

I cannot recommend this book too highly.

It is basically a manual to live a healthy and productive life by looking after your brain.

By embracing some of the ideas in the book we are also giving ourselves the BEST possible chance for optimum performance in your game or your business.

A healthy brain is an essential component of uncovering your true potential.

Dr Bredesen is internationally recognised as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

He graduated from Caltech then earned his MD from Duke University.

In today’s show we dive deep into some of the key ideas you can implement IMMEDIATELY to improve the health of your brain.

We talk about the importance of sleep and how a lack of it can be harming your brain far more than you think.

How poor oral hygiene can be the source of so much brain deterioration.

The key elements of a good diet

The effects of exercise on your brain.

If you follow the ideas in today’s show you will be able to look at the world through a totally different lens.

The Gratitude Experiment – Waleuska Lazo #135
40:53

Five minutes to Gratitude.

We have talked in the past on the Brain Booster about GRATITUDE.

In the book I co wrote with Gary Nicol, ‘The Lost Art of Playing Golf’ we began the first chapter with a piece about the effects of gratitude.

It would seem to be really clear the evidence suggests Gratitude is good for both you and your game.

The response to the book has been amazing so I wanted to look at gratitude a bit more closely.

So today we have coach Waleuska Lazo.

Waleuska Lazo is the creator and founder of FMTG. Five Minutes to Gratitude.

To the outside world, Waleuska had it all: A successful career, a loving family, and her health. For Waleuska her life was miserable. Having lost her marriage, sense of purpose, and on the verge of losing the relationships with her daughters, Waleuska knew there had to be a better way.

Waleuska created a system that took her from her lowest of lows to live the life of her dreams. Easier said than done. Waleuska failed her way forward to find out what works, and as important, what doesn’t work.

The end results?

Five minutes to Gratitude

When word spread of Waleuska’s “miraculous” results, she found herself sharing her FMTG experience with close friends.

Today, FMTG is a thriving community of people from around the world who have transformed their lives for the better.

It was a really interesting talk with Waleuska and her insights can only be of benefit to your golf but more importantly to your life. To be grateful is to create a condition that ALLOWS success to emerge.

Rick Sessinghaus – Coaching Collin Morikawa from a junior to PGA Tour success #133
43:56

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by PGA Tour coach Rick Sessinghaus. We get the chance to discuss the development of one of his players Collin Morikawa from being a junior player to a breath taking debut on the PGA Tour. We talk about how Rick realised early on in his coaching career that the mental part of the game was so vital for a coach to embrace.

If you are not helping your players on this aspect of the game then you are only partially doing your job.

As a former professional player himself Rick finds more satisfaction helping others achieve their dreams than he did in his own competitive career. Long intrigued by the fact that physical skills were rarely the determining factor in athletic success.

He took ACTION

He didn’t just think about improving his coaching.

He made it happen.

He studied the mental and emotional skills that make or break a performance. Rick has a Doctorate Degree in Applied Sports Psychology; he is also a Certified Mind Factor Coach.

Rick is constantly researching the latest scientific findings pertinent to achievement in golf, business, and life.

We discuss some key elements to help YOUR game:

On course training

New games to play

How to use statistics more efficiently

How to give a player more ownership of their game

A great session

The Need to Look at Recovery – Michael Davis and Tim Brownstone – Kymira Golf #132
44:27

On today’s Brain Booster we get to look at one of the most overlooked areas in sport RECOVERY.

We all want to make the most of our training both in the gym and on the course but what about our body afterwards?

What do we do?

What can we do to make our recovery more effective?

Are we getting enough sleep?

Are we maximising the opportunity to recover?

What else could we be doing?

Effective recovery has been perhaps one of the most overlooked areas in golf.

Today we have an in depth discussion with Tim Brownstone and Michael Davis from KYMIRA golf. Mike is a former tennis player who went to the IMG academy and has always had a passion for excellence in sport.

Tim is the creator of some incredible technology which he will go on to explain in detail.

He is the inventor of Kymira Golf - Clothing that actually helps your body to recover with the aid of infra – red technology.

It sounds almost too good to be true.

A magic carpet!

That is what I thought until I looked into their research and development. What they have developed is nothing short of incredible.

It is wonderful to hear of a young company being so innovative and creative.

How would it be if you could actually wear clothing that helped your recovery?

Clothing that speeds up injury rehabilitation?

Does the work for you simply by having it on your body.

Have a listen to an incredible story.

Susie Meyers  Golf from Point A – The opportunity to BE different on the golf course #131
01:01:36

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by US teaching professional Susie Meyers. I first met Susie a number of years ago when she was presenting seminars across the world with legendary coach Michael Hebron.

Since then she has continued to do some amazing work. This has culminated in a book that I can 100% recommend for ALL golfers.

‘Golf from point A’

It is a wonderful piece of work that will have a truly beneficial effect on your very BEING on the golf course.

Many of the principles tie in EXACTLY with what we have discussed over that past couple of years with the Mind Factor.

What is Point A?

Point A is THIS moment

The moment you have NOW

The opportunity you have now.

This shot in this unique moment

No PAST or no FUTURE

Just the opportunity to CREATE this shot in this moment

Point A thinking allows you to let go of so much destructive thinking

It is a way of BEING on the golf course that you get to CHOOSE

It is a way of thinking that is not determined by the result of previous shots or by what may happen in the future.

Point A thinking is not just for the golf course.

Point A thinking is a skill for your LIFE

We had a wonderful discussion about the best way to approach improvement

Attention

Where is the best place to have your attention in terms of the golf swing?

What will ALLOW your ability to come through?

What are the limitations of current thinking?

The huge difference between ACCEPTANCE and resignation.

How the skill of acceptance has the potential to transform your golfing experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Susie.

She is a coach that is making a major contribution to the development of golf coaching

David Colclough – The INVISIBLE ingredients of outstanding coaching #130
56:23

Today we have a GREAT episode on the Brain Booster.

A show I really enjoyed putting together.

I get the chance to spend some time with someone I have known and respected for over 20 years David Colclough.

David is an incredibly knowledgeable coach who has been part of the PGA training program for over 15 years.

He has helped influence many of the young coaches of today.

He also has a huge passion for learning and what can be developed to help develop both coaches and players.

He has spent time with some incredible mentors over his career such as Martin Hall and Denis Pugh. As well he has completed a Masters in coaching.

We get the chance to reflect on the development of the PGA coaching structures and how the training program has changed so dramatically over the years.

In terms of coaching we discuss the ‘invisible ingredients of outstanding coaching’. We really drill down into the ‘non obvious’ areas that are often overlooked when we work with players or indeed if we are working on our own game.

David call these The 4 C’s

Competence

Confidence

Connection

Character

We actually ignore these 4 elements potentially at the peril of our game.

All four elements are interwoven and essential to get the best from the players we work with.

They are also essential ingredients to keep people playing golf.

Once you have listened to David you will really reflect these 4 C’s and begin to see where YOU are in terms of balance.

As I said a really insightful episode with a VERY well read and researched coach

Do you want to become a Mind Factor Certified Mindfulness Practitioner?

Jake Hutt – A refreshingly different approach #129
44:17

Today on the Brain Booster we have with us Jake Hutt from Stanford GC. Take a look at what Jake is doing on Instagram. It is refreshingly different as he combines golf coaching with psychology, philosophy and music. (This is a revised version of the Podcast, sorry about the technical quality to the start of the show this week, thanks for your feedback)

Yes music!

You need to take a look to find out what I mean!

We get the chance today to really look at a great story of a coach evolving.

How Jake went from a hockey player to a ‘natural’ golfer to then someone who was drowning in the technicalities of the golf swing.

We talk about the frustrations of trying to take your swing ‘changes’ onto the golf course.

How he tried everything to do this only to run up against brick wall after brick wall.

How actually filming your swing ON COURSE can reveal so much about your actual tendencies.

The only tendencies that really matter are the ones you display when the golf course has an effect on the way you feel.

We then look at Jake’s view on some existing cultural beliefs about the game.

How you should ALWAYS aim at small targets?

Should you?

Does that work for everyone?

How would it be if you didn’t line up to anything?

Wow that would be really too far out!!

But what if you gave it a try?

What happens if you just aim at the GREEN and not the pin?

Again so much of what we talk about today is totally counterintuitive.

But could it work for you?

How music helps Jake with his creative mind.

How music can really get you to REMEMBER in a unique way.

As I said a refreshingly different approach by a refreshingly engaging young coach who is prepared to step away from orthodoxy and is also prepared to keep learning and asking valuable questions.

Enjoy the show

Gaining speed through EFFICIENCY – Mike Romatowski – Mach 3 Golf Speed Training #128
50:42

Who doesn’t want to hit it further?

Who doesn’t want to generate more club head speed?

One of the great thrills of the game is to really pump a long drive.

The thrill of seeing the ball explode of the club face.

What are the chances of you hitting it further even in your fifties and sixties?

Is that possible?

In the quest for distance how much will you compromise your accuracy?

What are the best ways to TRAIN yourself to generate more speed?

Today with have with us a brilliant guest from the USA.

Mike Romatowski who has created Mach 3 Golf Speed Training

We got the chance to have a great conversation.

Mike has some great concepts to consider if your quest is more distance and FREEDOM in your swing.

The key word though is EFFICIENCY

Are you creating efficient movement?

Mike tells us most people could generate at least another 8mph club speed just by changing the CONCEPT of what they are doing in the swing.

As I have said many times before we don’t change golf swings unless we change our concepts.

As we get into your conversation we have some interesting parallels with the work of Fred Shoemaker and his examples of what happens when golfers THROW a club as opposed to stalling at impact.

Mike talks about DUMPING your energy in the wrong place.

We also get the chance to look at what Mike believes are the best way to TRAIN for speed.

He has some very new ideas on some old principles

He works a lot with ROPES

You have to see the videos of his students doing this.

We also look into some training myths that can HURT us

The concept of no pain no gain

Pushing yourself to the limit

What do we ACTUALLY need to do?

A great session which you will gain a LOT from
