Sidney Madden Community Check-In: "The stories that move me most are the ones that are challenging the way things are."
3144
This is the second episode of our new Community Check-In series, where we bring back past guests — influential voices, industry insiders, essentially people who inspire us and many others. Today's guest is Sidney Madden, a writer & reporter at NPR Music and the host of the excellent podcast Louder Than A Riot: a show that puts a magnifying glass to Hip-Hop, examining and questioning the culture and industry from all angels — from mass incarceration in season one to misogynoir in their current season two. We talk through the genesis of the show, as well as the unfortunate news that NPR is cancelling Louder after this season and what that means for the future of telling these essential stories. We discuss the state of music journalism today, and new music discovery, plus get a taste of what Sidney's been listening to lately.

In solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and in support of our community, we pushed the season six finale back until today. Season Two — Episode Eleven (Featuring C.S. Armstrong's "Covers EP")
2141
This is season two's bonus episode — one like we've never done before. Today's episode features an entire EP of covers recorded by LA-based singer/songwriter C.S. Armstrong. Across a low key but illustrious career Armstrong has developed a sound that is ruthlessly soulful, one that calls back to decades past while charging forward and defying boundaries.
This is an EP of covers, composed of timeless songs recorded by Armstrong with the intention of being placed in major motion pictures. For reaons unknown many of these songs never received soundtrack placement, however Armstrong's rendition of Bobby Bland's "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" is currently in Taraji P. Henson's latest film Proud Mary.
Joining the table for today's episode is a NOT97 alum, our first ever recurring guest, Amsterdam's own Van Common. Since August, the Dutch artist has been traveling around America and was gracious enough to book end his trip with appereances on the show — from season one's bonus episode to now.

Charlie Adelman is the ideal guest for Not 97. He has years of experience working in digital marketing and management at the major label level, and currently handles product management for Crush Music. But really that’s the least of it, because he lives a floor above Only NY, the home of this show.
On today’s episode Charlie introduces “Ready Yet,” a contagious creeper of a single from LA’s Sasha Sloan.
Duendita—a soulful, Queens-bred singer/songwriter—flaunts versatility on the hopefully offering “Pray.”

Full disclosure: today's episode is sad, but beautifully so. With writer, social media editor, and radio dj @raewitte at the table we introduce a round of weighty songs powered by lost love, sacrifice, self-pity, and redemption.

Season Two — Episode Four (Feat. Dan Solomito)
3953
On today's episode we welcome industry veteran Dan Solomito to the Only NY store. Solomito has over 15 years of experience in the music industry with an impressive resume that ranges from work in artist management, A&R, and even as an assistant to Damon Dash. These days you can catch him slinging coffee beans at his own S,T Coffee in Bedstuy.
Featuring one of the strongest tracklists yet, today's episode is completely balanced. The first half pulls influence from throwback sounds born in the 70s and 80s—vibrant and dynamic picks like "Just Do You" from multi-instrumentalist Lord Echo and "Luck of The Draw," a modern spin on New Wave from Common Body.
The second run around the table hip hop takes over. We introduce a song about healthy eating from a prolific underground Atlanta rapper named Tha God Fahim, as well as a Neptunes-inspired track from Ohio's Vada Azeem, and some weighty, rasp-ridden bars from Dallas's Rikki Blu.
Episode four finishes strong with a smooth, contagious track form londoner Col3trane—a promising young crooner who manages to remain fresh while displaying a striking resemblance to the god Frank Ocean.

02 "Just Do You" by Lord Echo & Mara TK
03 "Move With Me" by Tawiah
