Hands-On History: Tudor Manor House
00:18:49
Heather Darsie is joined by Brigitte Webster, Experimental Food Historian, to discuss what it's like to run (and own) a Tudor manor home. Brigitte and her husband also run The Tudor and 17th Century Experience: The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is the brainchild of Brigitte Webster. Born in Austria, Brigitte trained, and served as a school teacher for 25 years. Her qualification was in history and cooking, a combination that has finally come together in her career as a culinary historian currently working on a number of publications on international cuisine of the 16th Century. The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is a venture that finally allows her to share her passion for all things Tudor with a wider audience especially now that she and her husband have at last moved into their dream home, an authentic Tudor manor. She is supported in her venture by her husband, Tom who is a long standing history re-enactor, military adviser and owner of an historic firearms company. King Edward II of England with Kathryn Warner
01:00:55

Edward II is one the most talked about kings of England, but not for his bravery or his great accomplishments. Instead we have been told for centuries that it was a 'red-hot poker' that was his end.

Historian Kathryn Warner joins us today to debunk the myths and to answer listener submitted questions.

Also, by pure coincidence, our guest today also mentions Agnes Strickland's incorrect history on Edward II as well.

Kateryn Parr with Dr. Linda Porter
00:50:07

As a queen consort of England, Kateryn Parr's history is often overshadowed by the events that allegedly occurred between her husband and Lady Elizabeth. The Victorian historians didn't help her reputation either. Agnes Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England depicts Parr as having an 'unrivaled skill as a nurse'.

Today I am joined by Dr. Linda Porter to get a feel for the real Kateryn Parr. Dr. Porter responds to many of the myths about Parr, as well as interesting stories about her life.

Tudor Tombs with Dr. Kirsten Claiden-Yardley
00:54:44
Tudor tombs are some of the longest lasting pieces of art in England. Whether these tombs were made of bronze, stone or even wood, the history remains centuries later. Effigies on top of the tomb are, in some cases, the only image we have of an historical figure. But sadly, during the dissolution of the monasteries, many of these magnificent tombs were damaged or destroyed.   Who designed them, who created them, and who paid them! What are some of the symbols we find on tombs? Why did neither Arthur Tudor or Henry Fitzroy have an effigy on top of their tombs?   Find Tudors Dynasty merchandise here: https://tudors-dynasty-podcast-merch.creator-spring.com/   Show Notes   Credits: Hosted by: Rebecca Larson Guest: Dr. Kirsten Claiden-Yardley Editing: Troy Larson (TroyLarsonCreative.com) Voice Over: David Black Music by: Ketsa, Alexander Nakarada, and Winnie the Moog via FilmMusic.io, used by EXTENDED license.   Resources: TudorsDynasty.com TudorsDynastyPodcast.com YouTube.com/TudorsDynasty Patreon.com/TudorsDynasty --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebecca-larson/message

Frances Howard with Elizabeth Fremantle
00:40:47

Welcome to Episode 122! This is the last of the off-season episodes and I’d like to thank Steph Stohrer for stepping up and helping to provide you with content for the last couple of months. The new season is going to be a bit different than what you’re used to, but you’ll still be getting all the same amazing content.

On this episode, Steph chats with critically acclaimed author, Elizabeth Fremantle. Elizabeth has published four Tudor and Elizabethan set novels which many you are likely familiar with...and, as we’ll learn today she has an announcement to make (which many of you may already know) regarding one of her books! Today, Elizabeth is here to discuss the ever scandalous Frances Howard. You’ll want to stick around to hear about this wonderfully noteworthy worthy figure in history that we seldom hear about.

Queen Consorts, the Grey Sisters and Lady Cromwell
01:23:53
When we began planning episode 103, I don't think we imagined that it would be a themed episode. This episode we were fortunate enough to have both Elizabeth Norton and Leanda de Lisle on to talk about women, or women near the throne. Elizabeth chats with me about queen consorts (oh the fun!), and Leanda is asked YOUR submitted questions on the Grey sisters. Then I teach you a bit about Elizabeth Seymour (sister to Queen Jane) in A Brief History.   And, as a treat to all listeners, everyone gets access to Elizabeth Norton's full answers in "IF I Made You Choose" this episode! As patrons you will now (after this episode) receive early access to the answers prior to the public.   Credits:   Written by: Rebecca Larson & Stephanie Stohrer Voiced by: Rebecca Larson, Stephanie Stohrer, Elizabeth Norton & Leanda de Lisle Produced by: Rebecca Larson Imaging by: Troy Larson   Music Credits: Pavana alla veneziana by Paul O'Dette, Composed by Joan Ambrosio Dalza   Resources: TudorsDynasty.com TudorsDynastyPodcast.com YouTube.com/TudorsDynasty Patreon.com/TudorsDynasty Merch Shop --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebecca-larson/message

Wars of the Roses, Katherine of Aragon and Bess of Hardwick
01:18:30
The Wars of the Roses, or the Cousins Wars, were one of the most deadly and tumultuous times in English history, resulting in the death of many nobles. Today, Rachael Dickzen and I talk about some of the key players of the time: Henry VI, Edward IV, the Kingmaker, and Richard, Duke of York. We also discuss the women of the Wars of the Roses, including Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Margaret of Anjou. We take a look at the family tree of Edward III and how that affected history, and we also touch base on sanctuary and quick executions.   Then historian and author Heather Darsie joins us again for Ask the Expert. Today’s topic is Katherine of Aragon (and her family), and we ask Heather the questions you submitted on social media. You’re really going to enjoy this one as Heather once again shatters our idea of what actually happened between the sheets with Katherine and Arthur Tudor. Lastly, Steph joins us again to share with you the story of the amazing Bess of Hardwick - you won’t want to miss this episode….listen in segments if you need to, but be sure to listen to it all.   Wars of the Roses: Open - 39:37 Katherine of Aragon: 39:38 - 1:08:34 Bess of Hardwick: 1:08:35 - 1:18:30 -- Credits: Written by: Rebecca Larson & Stephanie Stohrer Voiced by: Rebecca Larson, Stephanie Stohrer, Rachael Dickzen & Heather R. Tudor Medicine with Historian Seamus O'Caellaigh
00:54:57

Henry VIII lived for 55 years and had many health issues, especially toward the end of his reign; But that doesn’t mean he was a healthy man prior to that.

Henry’s own interest in remedies and prescriptions were quite magnificent as well.

The health of the King was quite often public knowledge, and as you’ll discover in this episode, even his bowel movements were written about.

Royals, like today, were celebrities - to be associated with the King could bring one wealth and power, and we know that Henry VIII raised men who other monarchs may not have….because he was paranoid and had issues trusting people.

It is easy for us, living in the 21st century, to take for granted modern medicine.

My guest today is historian, Seamus O'Caellaigh. Seamus is the author of Pustules, Pestilence and Pain: Tudor Treatments and Ailments of Henry VIII.

The Queen's Sisters: The Lives of the Sisters of Elizabeth Woodville with Sarah J Hodder
00:57:58
Excerpt from Amazon.com: "Whether Queen or commoner, the lives of women throughout history is a fascinating study. Elizabeth Woodville, 'The White Queen', managed to make the transition from commoner to Queen and became the epitome of medieval heroines – the commoner who married a King. When she became the wife of Edward IV her actions changed the life of her entire family. Vilified both by their contemporaries and by many historians since, the Woodville family were center stage during the reigns of Edward IV and Richard III. Elizabeth Woodville became the ancestress of future Kings and Queens. This book takes a fresh look at the lives of Elizabeth's sisters. Although information on them is scarce, by looking at the men they married, their families, the places they lived and the events that they lived through we can catch a glimpse of their lives. Each sister has their own story to tell and they may not have achieved the dizzying heights that their sister did, but they are all fascinating women." Dr. Wendy J. Dunn on Katherine of Aragon
00:53:55

On this episode I speak with Australian author and historian, Dr. Wendy J. Dunn. Wendy is the author of three absolutely amazing Tudor novels. We talk about the central characters in each: Anne Boleyn, Thomas Wyatt, Catherine Carey and Katherine of Aragon.

Wendy also discusses what the writing process was like for her, as well as how she handled rejection.

We discuss Katherine of Aragon's early years before arriving in England as her time with Arthur. Somehow I got her to answer the 'did they or didn't they question'.

Thomas Cromwell with Author Caroline Angus
00:46:29
For years you have been asking me to do a podcast about Thomas Cromwell. Even though I had read quite a bit about his life, I had never felt like I could do his story the justice it deserved. Today is the day.   My guest today is author Caroline Angus. Caroline is one of the leading authorities on Thomas Cromwell. Her research on him has been so extensive that she has published a trilogy called The Queenmaker Series. Today, Caroline will help us better understand Thomas Cromwell.   I’m Rebecca Larson, host of the Tudors Dynasty Podcast and owner of TudorsDynasty.com. Telling the stories of those who lived centuries before us is what I enjoy doing most.  Whether it be a show on one subject or an interview with an author/historian, I’ll bring you the tales of 16th century England. Before I get started today, I need to take a minute to thank the folks who became new patrons during the break: Hanane S and Melissa A - thank you so much for your support - your support and the support of all my patrons who have meant the world to me. It’s support like yours that encourages me to keep you entertained and informed. At the beginning of the next season (September 2020), I will be changing the layout of my show. I want to continue with interviews but I also want to go back to my roots and talk about one subject. I also want to add other segments. Keeping in mind that the overall show length with be longer... what other things would you like me to inform you of or entertain you with? This day in history? Book recommendations? Other ideas?   My patrons will be allowed to vote on what they’d like to see added, and then I’ll do just that. Actually sounds like a wonderful challenge and I can’t wait to see what happens.    If you’d like to cast your vote and aren’t a patron? Well, you can go to patreon.com/tudorsdynasty and click become a patron...then go cast your vote! You, along with all my other patrons have the opportunity to control one of the segments of my show in 2020. A full list of patrons can be found at tudorsdynastypodcast.com    Painted as an evil-mastermind, Thomas Cromwell’s reputation, like Thomas Seymour’s has not done them any favors. Yet, authors like Hilary Mantel have returned him to his human form. Thomas Cromwell, the man. The Tower of London with Tara Ball
00:44:06

I must begin with two apologies. The first being that I may sound a bit different this week as I've been battling a cold. Secondly, there was a technical difficulty in my attempt to record this interview with Tara Ball, Warden at the Tower of London. Since I was unable to record an actual interview as I usually do, Tara was kind enough to take the questions I had prepared and record her answers for me. Regardless of the setback, I believe you will truly enjoy this episode as you do all the others. Tara does a marvelous job conveying the history of the Tower.

Today, Rosie’s subject  is Margaret Douglas. You might know Margaret best as the daughter of Henry VIII’s eldest sister, or maybe as the mother of Lord Darnley...but as usual,  I’m going to let someone who has done more research on her life do the talking...and with that I’d like to welcome Rosie to the show….

Interview with Author Margaret George
00:49:09

Awhile ago, on Facebook, I asked for suggestions on guests to have on the show. One of my followers (I wish I could recall who it was to thank them) requested Margaret George. At the time I believed she was unattainable. One day I worked up the nerve to contact her and ask - what was the worst that would happen, right? I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that she was interested. This was many, many, many months ago. Today, I finally talked to her and thoroughly enjoyed our conversation.

On today’s episode I welcome another one of my favorite authors, Margaret George. Margaret and I talk about her novels: The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles and Elizabeth I. We discussed where her love of history originated as well as the history behind her books. We talk about the ridiculous 72,000 people Henry VIII executed, Katheryn Howard, the TV series The Spanish Princess and even Thomas Seymour (I didn't expect it). Be sure to stick around until the end to discover something you may not have known about this prolific author.

Interview with Historian Dan Jones
00:47:03

*Note: This episode may include curse words or statements that may offend you, but let's be honest, that's what makes this one the most fun!

This episode is my final episode before I take a brief break from recording - don’t worry, I’ll be back in September. When I made the announcement that I would be switching to seasons in order to be able to spend more time with my family I  figured I needed my final episode to be a big one - one to hold you over for two months. I am pleased to announce that (in my opinion) I was able to do that by booking Dan Jones as a guest.

Dan Jones is a historian and author who many of you may recognize without needing an introduction. For those who are not as familiar with Dan you may recognize him as the host of Secrets of Great British Castles on Netflix, or Britain’s Bloodiest Dynasty as well as a plethora of Tudor themed programs. Dan has eight books under his belt with his most recent one, Crusaders due out in the US his Fall.

In this episode we really cover a WIDE variety of topics and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it.

William Shakespeare with Cassidy Cash
00:39:28

On today’s show I’m discussing a topic I feel I know very little about...William Shakespeare, but thankfully I’ll have a little help from an expert on the subject and we’ll have her answer some of your questions at the end as well.

William Shakespeare is arguably the most well-known playwright of all time - to learn more about him today I have special guest, Cassidy Cash from That Shakespeare Life podcast on to educate me, and maybe you too, on the life of William Shakespeare.

But, before we get started, here’s a little bit about Cassidy:

Cassidy Cash is an award winning filmmaker, artist, and host of the podcast That Shakespeare Life. Cassidy believes that in order to take Shakespeare’s work from page to performance, understanding the history of the man who wrote them is essential. Her work focuses on exploring the real life and history of William Shakespeare and using art to help her fellow Shakespearean's learn something new about the bard.

The Sisters Boleyn with Christine Morgan
00:42:41

With this podcast I share a variety of stories from the most well-known dynasty of them all; The Tudors. From simple stories about the people of the time to the drama that was the reign of Henry VIII and of course, religion and politics.

This episode of the podcast is brought to you in part by The Falcon Nest - Handmade, history-themed jewelry. The Falcon Nest specializes in gorgeous replicas of the famous Anne Boleyn “B” necklace.  See more at - the-falcon-nest.com  - and be sure to use promo code TUDORSDYNASTY to receive 15% off!

So, May 19th is the 483rd anniversary of the execution of Anne Boleyn - I hate to call it an anniversary because that would indicate a celebration, and it was no real celebration for Anne. Except, without her execution I don't believe she would be as popular as she is today. Anne’s sister Mary has been mostly lost to history but part of her still carries on today - we’ll cover that more in a little bit.

On today’s show we have special guest, Christine Morgan - Christine is a historian and web series creator from Charlotte, NC and hold an MA in European History and has been invited to present her research internationally at history conference in the US and in the UK.

Her research covers the history of royal families, royal mistresses, religion, theatre, and propaganda. Christine’s web series called “Untitled History Project” which she writes, researches and hosts, has garnered support in her community and has been used as teaching material in high schools and universities in the US.

Sari Graham on Anne Boleyn
00:27:26
Mar 23 at 3:34pm

On this episode I have with me my good friend, Sari Graham to talk about her love for the person with the most recognizable name in world history, Anne Boleyn; Daughter. Sister. Lady-in-Waiting. Marquess. Queen. Mother. Heretic. Whore. Witch. Traitor. Victim. Probably one of the most recognizable names in English history, her life’s story has been immortalized in numerous books, film and television series in the 483 years since her untimely death. The world still feels the ripples of the waves Anne Boleyn made during her lifetime, including the highly successful reign of her only child, Queen Elizabeth I.

Special Episode - Movie Review: Young Bess (1953)

In this special episode I welcome Sari Graham back to the show. You might recognize Sari's name from my website TudorsDynasty.com or you might recognize her voice from a previous episode about the Wars of the Roses.

Sari and I discuss the 1953 film, Young Bess. If you've never watched the movie it should be fun to hear what we thought of it - IF you have seen it I'd love to hear your feedback and see if you felt the same way the two of us did watching it.

i hope you enjoy this more relaxed style of show, because it was a lot of fun to put together.

Thomas, the diplomat and the Siege of Pest
00:15:21
Oct 13, 2018 at 3:52pm   Hey! Welcome to the show! This will be the first show where I debut my new equipment AND new imaging from the amazingly talented, Troy Larson.

Thomas, the diplomat and the Siege of Pest is a new concept for me. I don't often speak of anything diplomatic or military, because it used to bore me. I was more interested in the relationships and the drama. Little did I know that the research for this podcast would change my mind all together. That by understanding an important piece of Thomas Seymour's history I understand him all the more. The battles, sieges and wars were a large part of Tudor lives and to neglect them is to do an injustice. So, here I go...stepping outside the box and producing a new sounding podcast about a subject I knew little of before choosing it as a topic.

If, as recommended in the podcast, you'd like to follow along on Google Maps (or wherever you prefer), here are a list of cities mentioned:

Enjoy this podcast and hope to see you next time!  -Rebecca

Plantagenets & the Wars of the Roses
00:44:06
Sep 8, 2018 at 4:57pm

This podcast is a bit unconventional for me. I've decided that talking about the Tudors, or any royal history, for that matter is more fun when you have someone to do it with. Sari Graham and I have become friends through social media and we share an interest in all things Tudor. I am honored to have her as a guest on the show today so she can teach me, and maybe you as well, a bit about the Wars of the Roses.

Why the Tudors?
00:30:11
Aug 25, 2018 at 4:21pm

I was having a difficult time coming up with a topic for this week's podcast. I reached out to my followers on Facebook and a couple of them mentioned that they would be interested in finding out what got me interested in The Tudor dynasty in the first place. I thought it was a fantastic idea and so I ran with it.

This episode begins talking about Henry VII and the Battle of Bosworth as well as Elizabeth of York and leads up to the birth of Prince Arthur.

I discuss my genealogy, my DNA, favorite programs and so much more. If you really want to get a feel for who I am and what drives me then you'll love this episode.

*side note - I discovered later that I am NOT related to the person I mentioned. It was a bad hint. (You'll know what this means after you listen)

As always, I say thank you to all my patrons and to those of you who have supported over the years. Thanks again!

A very special thank you to Nathen Amin for allowing me to share the quote from his social media account.

Most Influential Women: Margaret Beaufort
00:16:25
Aug 11, 2018 at 8:02am

On my Facebook page called, Tudors Dynasty, I asked my followers who they believed to be the most influential women of the Tudor era. It is because of this poll that I decided to turn this into a series of episodes about some amazing Tudor women.

With this episode I focused on Margaret Beaufort, someone that I have not written much about in the past so it was fun to learn more about her.

Understanding the Man: Henry VIII - Part Two
00:30:01
Jun 2, 2018 at 6:00pm   This is the second and last part on my "Understanding the Man" series on King Henry VIII.

As many of you may already know, King Henry VIII is my favorite monarch of the Tudor dynasty. If it wasn’t for his reign I do not believe the Tudors would be as popular as they are today. In this episode I continue on my journey to explain the Henry I have learned to love...and hate.

In this series on Henry VIII I want to take a different look at the king who executed two of his six wives. My mission is to make those of you who look at him as a tyrant to see what made him into the man he became later into his reign.

Most Fearless Women in Tudor England
00:19:29
May 5, 2018 at 8:15pm   Episode: Most Fearless Women in Tudor England   I recently finished reading a couple of books about Mary Tudor, sister of King Henry VIII and Queen of France; it got me thinking about how fearless some of these women in the Tudor period really were. By today’s standards they would not be considered as brave (depending on what part of the world you live in of course), but in 16th century England the things these women did may have been considered reckless and disobedient by their male counterparts.

Episode: Edward VI's Regency Council
00:26:29
Apr 2, 2018 at 12:37pm   Episode: Edward VI's Regency Council   After producing my series on Lady Jane Grey I thought I should step back a bit and look at the beginning of Edward VI's reign. As many of you already know I have an obsession with Thomas Seymour - it is at the time of Edward accession to the throne that things began to sour for Thomas Seymour...where he may have foresaw great favor and wealth, realty brought him much less. Thomas Seymour was not even trusted by King Henry VIII to be on the regency council of his own nephew.

This episode will focus on the events that occurred prior to King Henry VIII's death and will end with each of the sixteen men on the council and a bit about them.

I would also like to take a minute to apologize for the slaughtering of English place names, surnames and events -- I didn't realize until after the fact that I may have done a bit more research on how to pronounce a few things - my apologies, in advance.

The Life of Lady Jane Grey (Part Two)
00:17:57
Mar 4, 2018 at 1:50pm   The Life of Lady Jane Grey (Part Two)   The life of Lady Jane Grey has been told many times. Most of the stories mention an abusive home where Jane felt trapped. But they do not often make you feel like you are getting a glimpse at the real Jane.

My series on Jane will hopefully open your eyes to interesting bits you did not know.

The Life of Lady Jane Grey (Part One)
00:15:21
Feb 16, 2018 at 7:22pm   The Life of Lady Jane Grey (Part One)   There were many reasons why I wanted to do a series on Lady Jane Grey.

1. February is the month she was executed

2. I have read 'Crown of Blood' by Nicola Tallis

3. I just finished 'Three Sisters Who Would Be Queen' by Leanda De Lisle

4. BBC recently had a series on her as well, so Jane is hot-topic this month.

The life of Lady Jane Grey has been told many times. Most of the stories mention an abusive home where Jane felt trapped. But they do not often make you feel like you are getting a glimpse at the real Jane.

My series on Jane will hopefully open your eyes to interesting bits you did not know.

Elizabet, Queen of England - Part Six
00:17:27
Feb 4, 2018 at 1:42pm   Here is the last episode in the series on Elizabeth, Queen of England.  As this journey to discover the real Elizabeth Tudor, Queen of England comes to an end I have decided to focus on two important women of the era.

They were both female, both royal by birth and both Queens in their own right, but being cousins is what caused the most havoc in their lives of these two women. I am of course speaking of Elizabeth Tudor and Mary Stuart.

Thank you to my current patrons - hear your special shout out at the end of show!

Elizabeth, Queen of England - Part Three
00:14:21
Jan 1, 2018 at 11:28am   Elizabeth Tudor has always been on the back-burner for me. While I love the fact that she is the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn I’ve never been as interested in her reign as I have been for her father’s.

Katheryn Howard - Part Four
00:22:14

In this final part of the series I look into the interrogations of those around Katheryn Howard, her confessions, final words and execution.

This series has truly been a labor of love. I never would have thought that I would enjoy learning so much about Katheryn Howard - she is not as boring as I had once believed.

Katheryn Howard - Part Two
00:21:51

In the last podcast we ended with Katheryn Howard married and Thomas Cromwell was executed. If you missed it, I’d recommend going back and listening to that one first, it was called Katheryn Howard: Part One.

As a queen of England Katheryn is only remembered for being the fifth wife of Henry VIII, and was executed. If it hadn’t been for her scandalous downfall, and said execution, we would not have as much interest in Katheryn as we do today.

Here is the "transcript" so to speak for this podcast: http://www.tudorsdynasty.com/katheryn-howard-part-two/

Katheryn Howard - Part One
00:19:36

The story of Katheryn Howard intertwines with many other notable figures of the time but none more than Anne of Cleves and Thomas Cromwell. We’ll start with Katheryn’s childhood and attempt to chronologically move through time until her execution in 1542.
