S4 E73: Hardrock Woodworks; Tiny Piecing and Norwegian Knitting
4491

Hardrock Woodworks is a family run Etsy shop that sells handmade wood and 3D printed products.  Wayne is a fine woodworker craftsman, and he makes beautiful quilting clappers in maple wood, walnut and a type of maple called Ambrosia, which has a striped wood grain. He started making clappers and other quilting notions and tools as a result of his wife, Jane, who is a quilter, had a need for her sewing and quilting use.  A good quality clapper is in high demand for not only quilters, but clothing and bag making sewists as well.

I talk with Wayne, Jane and their daughter Katy.  Katy handles most of the tech related responsibilities of the business like taking product photos and uploading to Etsy and  social media and marketing.   They are giving a special 10% off promo code, STEPH10,  to my listeners to use in the Hardrock Woodworks Etsy shop.

Favorite Replay: Kate - The Last Homely House
6261

My guest on this episode is Kate and her amazing YouTube channel is The Last Homely House.  Kate lives alone in a little cottage on a hill farm in Northumberland right at the top of England, next stop Scotland.

I absolutely love Kate’s YouTube Channel.  Her videos always transport me to a beautiful bucolic landscape where she shares a glimpse into her creative world with all of us.  You will see a bit of gardening, quilt piecing, knitting, paper crafts, sewing, hand quilting, cooking, baking and even chocolate making! Oh, and she is also a beekeeper - with beautifully painted bee hives (I’m not sure I am calling it the right name - but its the wooden boxes where the bees live and make honey)

I hope you enjoy Kate’s YouTube channel as much as I do.  Also, be sure to comment on Kate’s videos and/or Instagram if you learned about her channel from the Make and Decorate Podcast :)

In my chat segment, I update a bit on the progress of the deck container garden, and I review a couple of sewing products and online resource: Tulip needles; Tula Pink Stiletto; Connecting Threads online shop and catalog. They now carry Tulip needles and other Japanese sewing notions.

S3 E65: QuiltCon 2021 Recap and How to Navigate the Rising Price of Quilt Fabrics
2879

In this episode I give my recap of my first QuiltCon experience, and how the virtual QuiltCon did this year.  I have to say, I really enjoyed Virtual Quiltcon 2021 from the comfort of my home.  I am not a natural social butterfly, and this suited me so well!
I will talk about some of the highlights from the quilt design, hand stitching, and Boro workshops I took, as well as the many different lectures I attended.

On my podcast blog page, I posted photos of my projects from the workshops I took at QuiltCon.  My goal was to complete projects from these classes, and not have to stuff them in a box to "finish later".

There has been buzz chatter about the rising prices of quilt fabrics, and where you should purchase your fabrics, and" warning warning, danger Will Robninson" LOL! A little dramatic, I know, but there are ways to take the price increase in stride and not let it ruin our creative quilting parade.  I wrote a lot about this on my podcast blog post.

S3 E64: Quilting and pet talk with Pam Cobb (Hip to be a Square)
5190

Chit Chat Segment: I update on the goings on here, which means so much snow!  Since the last episode, I made a quilt from start to finish in 9 days which is fast for me.  The pattern I used is free from the Robert Kaufman website.  It is called Pixelated Heart Quilt.

My guest on this episode is Pam Cobb, known from the Hip to be a Square podcast, and The Stitch TV Show YouTube Channel.  Pam is as much of an animal lover as I am, so we start off our chat with pet talk.  Pam shares her cat(s) and dog rescue stories, and how Fred the dog and the three cats became close buddies.

We talk about almost everything about quilting - from piecing tops, basting methods, frankenbatting, binding tips and more.

M&D S3E63: Welcome Back! Choosing interior paints and Sew much more!
2984

Welcome back to the 2nd half of Season 3!

In this episode, I update on my creative goings on around the studio and a DIY home improvement project.  I will also share my first experience with chalk painting.  Did you know you can get custom colored chalk paint at the big box home improvement store?  It is pretty awesome :)

The main segment is about choosing interior paints and color palettes.  Whether you are taking on painting your walls a fresh new color, or you are hiring out to painters to paint your rooms. I have some tips that will save you money and frustration in choosing your next paint color palette, as well as the different choices of paints available at the boutique paint shops to the large home improvement stores.  There is a quality paint accessible for every budget, you just have to know what to look for and how to find it.

In closing, I share highlights on what I have been watching and podcasts I am listening to.

S3 E60: Handmade Holiday Gift Ideas
3351

Happy Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving is all about reflecting on what and who we are thankful for, as well as gathering together with family and loved ones, but this year is certainly different, and the gathering with loved ones may be done over the modern technology of Zoom or other video call applications.

The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, kicks off the frenzied quest to get all of your gift giving tasks completed before time runs out.  I have some handmade holiday gift ideas for sewn gifts and non sewn gifts that can be made quickly, and will be very impressive to gift.  Quick gifts also seem like the most fun to make because you feel so accomplished when completing a gift.

Be sure to check out the show notes for links and photos of the gift ideas, and I also have gift wrapping ideas as well.

Stay safe, happy and healthy!  and make time to create!

M&D S3E59: Choose a Sewing Machine with Confidence

Choosing a Sewing Machine with Confidence is a huge topic and can be a very daunting task when you are looking for a new sewing machine.  I break down the types of machines into categories of features to look for and research tips.  I also define these features to give a better understanding of what they do and how they can be utilized ie what is dual feed? do you need or want dual feed?  Do you want bells and whistles or would you prefer a more simple and low maintenance sewing machine?

M&D S2E49: Juki 3000QVP, Visible Mending Boro Stitch and more with Stephanie
2387

This is a super raw, pared down episode: no music, no editing.  Never fear, I still have good content for you to listen to on today’s episode.  I tell you about a new release of a sewing machine, the Juki 3000 QVP, which has high end features yet is more affordable.

Visible mending is something I have been wanting to try, and now is the perfect time for me to do so.  I was pleasantly surprised at how easy hand mending can be.  I am mostly doing the boro style stitch with heavy weight embroidery thread and floss, using a running stitch.

EQ8 released a new add-on, the Dear Jane quilt blocks.  You will learn about what this add on of the digital version of the Dear Jane quilt is all about.

I conclude the episode with what I’m watching on all of the streaming apps, including YouTube channel recommendations.

Happy New Year Everybody!!!

On the first segment of this episode, I chat about what I did, what I made and what I watched on Netflix during the holidays.  Check my show notes for links.

Segment 2:
Meet Jessica Pierce, owner of 5 out of 4 Patterns.  Jessica is an amazing person, and we had such a great time chatting about her, and her family and her awesome business, 5 out of 4 Patterns.  We had such a good time, that we talked for an hour and a half! Haha!  I split up this long conversation into 2 episodes, and I will release the part 2 episode next Thursday, January 17th (so you won’t have to wait 2 weeks for part 2).

Jessica has an extensive education in a field far far away from sewing …science, space and super technical teaching accolades that I could not begin to pretend I understand.  Like I said, she is an amazing and super smart woman, oh, and did I mention she has 6 little ones…whaaaa???  Yes, she has 6 kids, and is running the world with her independent pattern company.

M&D 12: Modern Sewciety podcaster, Stephanie Kendron
3545

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  This is truly a special episode, I cannot tell you what a joy it is for me to have Stephanie Kendron from http://modernsewciety.com/ ; The Modern Sewciety Podcast on the show today!  Aside from Pat Sloane, Modern Sewciety is one of the first sewing related podcasts I subscribed to, and I have been a loyal listener ever since.

We all love her podcast and have been given so much great information and stories from other makers, designers, and companies from our sewing and quilting community on Stephanie's podcast.  I am greatly inspired by Stephanie, and look...we have the same awesome name!  Great names and minds think alike :)

On this episode of Make and Decorate, I get to ask Stephanie Kendron to share her story and what motivates and inspires her on a daily basis, what machines she sews on, how her sewing and craft has evolved over the years, and - of course all about her podcast.

Stephanie Kendron is also a Cricut influencer, and she talks about the awesome Cricut Maker that has a rotary blade option to cut fabrics without adding stabilizers...whaaa??!!?

I hope you all enjoy time with your family and friends this Thanksgiving weekend.  Make some hot chocolate or cafe mochas, listen to my show, and and of course you will pull your sewing machines out and make something - right?! Yay!!

We have two weeks to go before Thanksgiving...do you have your tablescape planned out yet?  Create a beautifully decorated table with your own handmade table linens or make last minute semi-diy linens with embellished ready made linens.  I share workroom tips on standard dimensions of table cloths, placemats, table runners and napkins.  In addition to linens, there are more layers of greens or flowers, candles etc. to make a gorgeous tablescape.  You can use these decorating tips for any special event or just for yourself.

What if you are not hosting a holiday event?  I give ideas for making host/hostess gifts you can make for the host/hostess of the holiday gathering you are going to attend.

In preparation for a future podcast episode with a certified sewing technician, please email me with questions you have about maintaining and troubleshooting your sewing machines stephaniesochadesign@gmail.com

Ep. 9 New "Mini-sode" Sewing fleece, machine repair?, hot knife carving pumpkins
1713

I am trying something new with my "mini-sodes", mini-size episodes on the weeks in-between the regular bi-weekly episodes.  These mini-sodes will be about the most recent updates with me, projects I'm working on, seasonal things and any thing else I think of between main episodes.

If I don't have any new updates, then there will not be a mini-sode - so, I can focus on the main episodes as priority.

Ep. 8 Sarah Clevenger, Musings of a Seamstress: Kenmore & Janome machines
4682

I recorded this episode on-site in Sarah Clevenger's sewing room!  We had the best time talking about sewing, machines, fabrics and pattern making.  Sarah gives a couple of sewing hacks/tips, and she talks about some of her niche sewing interests like costume and renaissance style sewing, and how she loves sewing coats.

If you have any hesitation on sewing your own clothing, or think you need a fancy machine to achieve great sewing...listen to this episode.  I was blown away at the impeccable sewing that Sarah continues to achieve on her mechanical Kenmore sewing machine.  I have met several people who sew on a Kenmore machine, and they all say the same thing - it is a workhorse and they love it.

Ep. 7 Sew Sweetness Retreat Recap, Subscription boxes and Interior Painting Tips
3737

On this episode I give a full recap of the Sew Sweetness Retreat I attended the last weekend of September. There was a guest instructor from Blue Calla Patterns, Celine Alleart, and we made a bag from her pattern, The Boronia Bowler Bag.  Sara Lawson was also an instructor, and we made the cute crossbody/messenger style bag from her pattern called the Satellite Bag.

Also, I review a couple of subscription boxes I recently started, the fall FabFitFun box, and Grove Collaborative (all natural products)

I finish the episode with a segment on interior painting tips.  Many people in the northern hemisphere are heading back indoors and sprucing up their homes for the holidays.  Learn about paint quality, finishes and choosing colors for your home.  I talk about mostly Benjamin Moore paint, but also give tips on big box store paint lines, as well as introduce you to a high end natural pigment paint from the UK, Farrow and Ball.

Ep. 6 Kids learning to sew and craft with my 10 yr old niece, Ava
3528
Have you ever taught a kid how to sew, quilt or craft? We often hear from adults on how to teach children how to sew and craft, but on this episode, we get a glimpse of what it is like to be a kid learning how to sew from my 10 year old niece, Ava. I started teaching Ava to sew when she was a wee 5 year old, and since then she has learned how to sew an accurate seam allowance, how to thread her machine, fill a bobbin and load it the right direction, and how to keep her machine clean after each use so that it runs smoother for her on each project. Ava also shares her recent makes, and her creative process as she continues to build on her sewing skills and her favorite things to make. She also discovered her new favorite fabric - cork. In addition to Ava, I share updates on new Babylock sewing machine and serger releases this month, Bernina is now selling their gold plated presser foot (anniversary limited edition) online, as well as a prelude to my exciting retreat I am attending this week! I want to hear from you! Ep1. Welcome to Make and Decorate with Stephanie Socha Design
2077
This is the premier episode of Make and Decorate with Stephanie Socha Design. I introduce myself, Stephanie Socha, and talk about my creative background and why I wanted to do a podcast show. I explain the format of the show, and how it will be evolving as I get more comfortable with the technology that is required with podcasting, as well as how listener feedback will also shape the show. Sewing and quilting will be the center of the show, with a little bit of decorating here and there when possible. I believe quilting and sewing are intrinsic to interior decorating. We can create custom designed homes and lifestyles that reflect our own stories and personalities with deep sentiment with our handcrafted art, and treasures.
