How to Build Better Bosses
34:44

One thing we hear a lot about is how hard it is to be a boss—and how much people don’t like their bosses. And while there are a ton of leadership books and experts on this topic, we find the best teachers are the people who have been in the boss's shoes before and navigate through it. Enter today’s guest: Melissa Nightingale, now the co-founder of Raw Signal Group and co-author with Jonathan Nightingale on a new book called Unmanageable: Leadership Lessons From an Impossible Year. Quitting Your Job with No Plan B
42:38

On today’s episode we are re-sharing one of our favorite interviews with Tess Vigeland, author of Leap: Leaving a Job with No Plan B to Find the Career and Life You Really Want. Listen in for an honest conversation with Tess about leaving high status jobs without something impressive lined up. Seeing as many people are thinking about what’s next for them in their career, this conversation seemed timely to re-share.  I also think it’s very timely to re-share this conversation as so many people are thinking about what’s next for them in their career. Maybe that means no job. Maybe that means pursuing the good enough job. Or maybe that means staying where you are but working on your attachment between your job title and self-worth.

Why "Humble" is The New Successful

How to Be Actively Anti-Racist at Work + Life
53:05

As you’ve probably seen in other messaging across Career Contessa, we stand in solidarity with the Black community against racism, hate, and injustice. Silence and complacency have no place in our world and especially not on our platform or on this podcast.

Our values and humanity have called us to action and that includes learning how to be actively anti-racist. In today’s episode we’re joined again by Felicia Jadczak and Rachel Murray, the founders of She+ Geeks Out, to share education around antiracism and actionable ways white and non-Black people can be allies to people of color at work—and life. This is the time to take action and join Career Contessa in this ongoing education around racism and white privilege.

Can Attractiveness Get You Fired?
41:17

Meet Dr. Leah Sheppard a researcher at Washington State University who’s recent work found that attractive businesswomen are thought by supervisors, colleagues, and employees alike to be less trustworthy and more expendable. This phenomenon has been deemed the “Femme Fatale Effect” — a term usually reserved for a seductive, yet manipulative, woman (Think Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.) Put another way, women cannot catch a break.  In this episode, we’ll discuss why this gender stereotype and bias exist and what you can do about it. And, to add insult to injury, Dr. Leah will explain why the workplace treats conflict among women differently and how you can address that imbalance as well.

Georgina Gooley: Disrupting the Pink Tax
45:19

Meet Georgina Gooley, the co-founder of Billie and a woman disrupting the pink tax.  Shaving companies have always been centered around male narratives—focused on rugged jawlines and age-old troped of masculinity.

For many women, we grew up yearning to shave our legs for the first time—taunted by the glossy legs and the message that smooth legs made us “goddess-like.” On top of this—umm interesting—message, we were expected to pay more for our pink, coral, and peach-colored razors. Obsessed with advertising and branding from a young age, Georgina recognized that, while there had been a disruption in the already-crowded men’s shaving space, women were still being under-served and over-charged for our own shaving products.

This is how Billie was born. Billie is a female-first shave and body brand aimed towards fighting The Pink Tax and putting women first in an industry where we have remained an afterthought.

On this episode, you'll  learn:

  • Where Billie came from

  • What sets Billie apart from other brands

  • And how Billie focuses on women’s specific shaving needs—without adding the dreaded “pink tax.”

I first came across Laura’s work when Career Contessa published an article called “How You’re Wasting 50+ Hours a Week” and, as you can probably imagine, I was immediately taken by the article because it’s true— we all do share the same number of hours in a week—168 to be exact—but it does seem like some people machines that power through their to-do lists while others are just “too busy” all the time.  Why? I naturally when straight to the time management source with Laura, a seven-time author, TED speaker, a mother of four, and a woman who has analyzed the time diaries of 900+ people.

Debbie Sterling: Disrupting the Pink Aisle
49:30

Meet Debbie Sterling, the Founder and CEO of GoldieBlox and a woman disrupting the pink aisle.

For many women, our childhood toys consisted of Barbies, kitchen sets, and other variations of princess obsessions. And while we may have fond childhood memories with those toys, our male counterparts were being introduced to Legos, video games requiring strategy, and, following the male daredevils they saw projected on the screen.

What we didn’t know was that those gender stereotypes and messages would stick with many of us long-term and even impact our career choices. And that’s exactly why Debbie Sterling, a Stanford-educated engineer, created GoldieBlox, a media and toy company that helps tackle the gender gap in STEM for young women.

From years spent researching gender difference and talking with neuroscientists to a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1 million dollars in pre-orders, GoldieBox is empowering girls every day and Debbie’s story is one you just have to hear directly.

On this episode, you'll start to rethink pink and learn:

  • How Debbie turn rejection into a major success, including winning a coveted Super Bowl ad
  • The science behind the importance of role models for girls
  • The impact of STEM careers for women

Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur: Disrupting Female Friendships
44:35

Meet Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur founders of fashion and design site, Of A Kind, authors of Work Wife, and women who are disrupting the power of female friendships.

It’s true that Claire and Erica have been joined at the hip since their college days in Chicago and now as they run Of a Kind in New York City. It’s true that Claire and Erica host a hilarious weekly podcast called A Few Things. And it’s also very true that Claire and Erica are a prime example of a female power couple, I mean work wives,  who are disrupting how the power of female friendships can drive successful businesses.

For too long the stereotype has been that women are catty, emotional, and are too busy competing with each other to build successful businesses. That’s complete BS. You know it and I know it.  In fact, you’re probably thinking about your own work wife right now and nodding your head because you know your work is better and you’re more fulfilled at work because of her support, not in spite of her.

On this episode, you'll learn:

  • How Claire and Erica built a successful company that they sold to Bed  Bath and Beyond in 2015

  • The new foundation of the workplace that’s being redesigned by female power couples

  • How you can find and support your own work wife

Caroline Turner: Disrupting How Leaders Communicate
43:32

Meet Caroline Turner, author, speaker, and a leadership consultant disrupting how both male and female leaders communicate.

You’ve probably heard that men are from Mars and women are from Venus as a way to explain our communication differences but Caroline strongly disagrees with that. In fact, we’re about to disrupt all the traditional advice you’ve heard about masculine and feminine communication approaches—including the fact  that feminine does not equal “women,” and masculine does not equal “men.” No woman is exclusively feminine, no man exclusively masculine.

And if that’s true, what does it mean for communication approaches and, more importantly, for us as women? How does it impact us at work, in our lives, and how do we become “bi-lingual” in the two approaches?

On this episode, you'll learn:

Meet Amanda Enayati, a stress expert, author, and cancer survivor. If you’ve ever looked at the headlines around stress and anxiety,  the message is very clear: Chronic stress is on the rise. But what about the research that tells us how we can manage our stress or even turn our anxiety into positive action? And is there a difference between professional stress and personal? With so many questions about the topic, I was eager to find a stress expert who could actually provide some answers.

Meet Jill Abramson, author and Harvard college professor.  She also happens to be the first and only woman to hold the position of Executive Editor at The New York Times, a role she’d lose in a very public way

Jill Abramson’s ascent at The New York Times makes perfect sense considering Jill is a native New Yorker through and through and she spent years in journalism including in the managing editor role at the Times before taking the top spot in 2011. But Jill's leadership role didn't last long and when she was fired in 2013, the whole world talked about it, wrote about, and speculated on why it happened. From her leadership style to personality, the media covered it all.
