Great, intelligent analysis with a bit of banter

Description

Football Daily presents the Extra Time podcast. Every week, three members of the FD team discuss the biggest talking points of the past seven days, as well as the odd niche episode exploring a single topic in detail.  Please rate & review!

Episode Date
163: This Summer's Best Forward Signing Is...
2812
A brand new episode of the Extra Time podcast? Go on then. On this week’s episode, Patrick van Straaten is joined by Zac Djellab and Henry Hill to cast their eye over the three big Brazilian attackers on the move this summer. Henry thinks Richarlison’s move to Spurs could turn into one of the best transfers they’ve made in recent years. Are Barcelona right to sign Raphinha? Zac kinda just sits on the fence, probably wishing the Leeds man was going to sign for his beloved Chelsea instead. Then of course, Patrick gets to talk Arsenal following their signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City - is he simply perfect for the Gunners, and does the number of goals he scores matter? Tune in for all that and more this week. Until next time - and hopefully we won’t keep you waiting as long for another episode.

After that, it is prediction time! Can Roma and Borussia Dortmund win their respective leagues next season? Will Aleksandar Mitrovic hit 15 for Fulham in the Premier League? And can Newcastle qualify for Europe?

And finally, is Erling Haaland a nailed-on success at Manchester City? The Norwegian might be a goalscoring machine, but his body has a habit of letting him down.. We run through the potential dangers that await Haaland's arrival at The Etihad.. Enjoy!

161: How Can Arsenal Fix Their Attack?
2743
It’s Patrick van Straaten and Chris Hamill on the podcast this week, as Patrick gets to dedicate another show to Arsenal Football Club. This time though, it’s a look at their attack, as Mikel Arteta’s side face an uncertain summer. As it stands, they’ll have no natural strikers come August, so the first question is about whether or not Alexandre Lacazette has earned himself a new deal. Then there’s who they might bring in - Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are the two names being majorly linked with the Gunners, but the likes of Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney also get mentioned. And what about the future of Emile Smith Rowe - is his Arsenal future in doubt? Enjoy!

160: Where Will Football's Biggest Free Agents Go?
3149
► SUBSCRIBE to FOOTBALL DAILY PODCASTS: https://bit.ly/2W5ICxU

This week on the podcast, Patrick van Straaten is joined by Joe Thomlinson and Henry Hill to discuss where some of football’s biggest free agents might land. No Kylian Mbappe talk, as he is inevitably off to Real Madrid, but might PSG find a replacement for free? Paulo Dybala is confirmed as leaving Juventus, so could move to France, although Manchester City have also been linked. Apparently Franck Kessie to Barcelona is all but confirmed, but where does he fit in that midfield - does Xavi need to sell someone? Then there’s new rumours that Juve are the front runners for Antonio Rudiger, whilst the likes of Andre Onana and Jesse Lingard could also find themselves without a club come July. They round off the pod with some Frank Lampard chat - it’s not got off to the best of starts, has it? Enjoy!

159: What's Next For Chelsea? ft. Nizaar Kinsella
3168
It is a special one this week, as Zac Djellab takes the reins for a discussion all things Chelsea alongside our very own Dougie Critchley and special guest Nizaar Kinsella. It’s mostly a discussion about what is next for the club after Roman Abramovich put the Blues up for sale - who’s in the race and how might they be run in the future? There’s the consortium led by a Swiss billionaire who has no experience in sport, Chelsea fan Nick Candy and his group of investors, as well as the Saudi Media Group, who have no connection with the same regime that bought Newcastle United last year, none whatsoever, absolutely nothing, honest! There’s also the possibility that the new owners haven’t even been mentioned yet, and regardless, how it could spell the end for the likes of Marina Granovskaia in West London. There’s no doubt about it - this is your ultimate Chelsea situation debrief. Enjoy!

158: Why A Premier League Giant Are Favourites For Relegation
2851
Patrick van Straaten is this week joined by Chris Hamill to take a look at the mess that is the Premier League relegation battle. At the time of recording, there were five teams who were nervously looking over their shoulder as well as the three currently occupying the drop zone, although Leicester City’s win over Burnley on Tuesday proves they were never in danger. The pair condemn Norwich City and Watford to the Championship for next campaign, but who will join them? Newcastle United are the only in-form side in the bottom half, so they should be safe, right? Brentford are sliding and sliding, whilst Leeds United can’t stop anyone scoring against them - they’re on pace for 90 goals conceded this season. Burnley always seem to pull something out the bag, and Everton…well, Frank Lampard’s side couldn’t actually get relegated, could they? It’s an actual possibility. Enjoy!

157: Which Players Deserve An England Call-Up?
2680
After last week’s heated debate, it only made sense to bring Patrick van Straaten and Henry Hill back together for this week’s episode. Joined by the supposedly-Scottish Dougie Critchley, the trio cast their eye over the England squad ahead of the squad announcement next month. Or rather, they took a look on the edges at who Gareth Southgate could be looking to introduce into the Three Lions set up. Do Wolves’ Max Kilman and Brighton’s Adam Webster deserve a nod over the ever-improving Fikayo Tomori? In midfield, Henry backs James Ward-Prowse and Conor Gallagher over Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, despite his recent impressive form. And going forward, should Tammy Abraham be called up again, or does West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen finally get that phonemail after being one of the Premier League’s form players in recent weeks? Enjoy!

156: Who Is The Worst £100M Signing?
3514
It’s a spicy one this week as Patrick van Straaten is joined by Joe Thomlinson and Henry Hill to rate every single £100M transfer. There’s only eight of them (says Wikipedia), and the list is as follows: Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho, Joao Felix, Romelu Lukaku and Ousmane Dembele. Will the trio really rank the three of those that joined Barcelona as the three worst big money moves? Has Joao Felix been a success at Atletico Madrid? There’s a heated debate about the impact of Mbappe and Neymar both on and off the field for PSG - if they win the Champions League season, do they fly up this list? Oh, and if you’re wondering where Eden Hazard is, it was apparently an £89M transfer before bonuses - not that he’d be anywhere other than bottom of this definitive list. Enjoy!

155: Should Manchester United Drop Harry Maguire?
2645
► SUBSCRIBE to FOOTBALL DAILY PODCASTS: https://bit.ly/2W5ICxU

On this week’s episode, Henry Hill is joined by his main men Dougie Critchley and Sam Obaseki to cast their eye over the last few days in football. They start with Manchester United’s draw with Burnley, and discuss whether or not Harry Maguire should be dropped for a short time, despite being club captain. Then it’s off to Newcastle, who have climbed out of the relegation zone. Henry compares their first window to that of Chelsea and Manchester City under their new ownerships - is it on a similar level? They round up the episode off with some West Ham chat (not that) after David Moyes once again proclaimed Declan Rice as a £100M. Quite simply, is he? How much would you pay for him? Enjoy!

154: How To Fix Leicester City
3479
The gang get back together for a classic episode of Extra Time, as Patrick van Straaten, Joe Thomlinson and Chris Hamill work out how to fix Leicester City. After analysing their season to date, the first question concerns the manager - should Brendan Rodgers stay in charge? Once that’s settled, they work their way from back to front, initially working out a replacement for Kasper Schmeichel - could Bernd Leno be available? Alessio Romagnoli and Lisandro Martinez are touted as potential centre back options as Jonny Evans remains in the physio’s room, but midfield is the big one. With Wilfred Ndidi injury-prone and Youri Tielemans on the way out, the trio set their sights on Ligue 1. Is Renato Sanches a good fit for the side despite his injuries, or how about Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara. Should Ademola Lookman’s loan be made permanent, or are there better options further afield, like Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze? This episode is just like the old days. Enjoy!

153: Who Can Replace Sadio Mane at Liverpool?
2485
Just the two on this week’s episode of the Extra Time podcast, as Patrick van Straaten and Dougie Critchley discuss what could be next for Liverpool - and more importantly, the future of Sadio Mane’s position. Not that Mane is close to being finished at Anfield by any means, but at some point Liverpool will have to look to the future and find a replacement. A lot of Bundesliga names are discussed, including Christopher Nkunku and Moussa Diary, as well Porto’s Luis Diaz. Premier League players Jarrod Bowen and Raphinha also come up in conversation, but with Harvey Elliot, does Jurgen Klopp already have the perfect person waiting in the wings? Enjoy!

152: Europe's Strangest Title Races
2799
► SUBSCRIBE to FOOTBALL DAILY PODCASTS: https://bit.ly/2W5ICxU

This week on the podcast, Henry Hill is joined by his Continental Club buddies Dougie Critchley and Michael McCubbin to cast their eye on some of the less-spoken about title races around Europe. After they kick off the episode with some Everton and Manchester United chat, they ask if Sevilla can mount a title challenge and how long it will be until Inter pull away in Italy. Then there’s the more bizarre ones, as newly-promoted Union St. Gilloise lead the way in Belgium, Ajax have conceded just four goals but are second in the Eredivisie, meanwhile none of Turkey’s big clubs are anywhere to be seen in that title race. Any more leagues we should be focusing on? Let us know in the comments section!

151: Who Will Win The Africa Cup of Nations?
2676
On this week’s podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Zac Djellab and Sam Obaseki and is all about this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Despite Zac’s allegiance to Algeria and Sam’s to Nigeria, the trio have a considered chat about the big teams this time around, including hosts Cameroon, as well as Ghana and Ivory Coast. Henry thinks Mali might be a dark horse, whilst Chelsea insider Zac reveals what he knows about Hakim Ziyech and his absence from the Morocco team (spoiler: not much). After predicting a tournament winner, they then discuss their favourite kits at this year’s edition, giving shout-outs to Cape Verde, Mauritania and Sierra Leone. Enjoy!

It looks like it will be between Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham for the final Champions League spot, so who will get it? Is there any room for Arsenal to improve, and have Spurs still got another gear to reach? Will West Ham’s squad depth come back to haunt them? They also discuss Ralf Rangnick’s Man Utd side, but the consensus is they will not be eating at Europe’s top table come August. Enjoy!

3708
This week on Extra Time Pat van Straaten is joined by Zac Djellab and Henry Hill to hand out Football Daily's alternative awards for what has been a crazy year in the world of football.. Was Harry Kane's botched transfer to Manchester City one of the most embarrassing moments of 2021? Were Arsenal the biggest underachievers once more? And does Emmanuel Dennis really deserve to be considered one of the signings of the season? All that, plus much much more, including why mighty David Moyes might just be the manager of the year!

3495
► SUBSCRIBE to FOOTBALL DAILY PODCASTS: https://bit.ly/2W5ICxU

On this week's episode of the podcast, it's all about Everton as Joe Thomlinson, Chris Hamill and Henry Hill take a look at the mess at Goodison Park. First they dissect Marcel Brands' departure from the club and take a look at his transfers over the past three years - are any other than Lucas Digne been good moves? Then they chat about owner Farhad Moshiri's running of the team, and whether or not Rafa Benitez is a good fit for the side. Then it's the fun part - who should Everton buy? Enjoy!

147: Why The Ballon D'Or Is A Joke
3668
Strap yourselves in - it's a big one this week! Patrick van Straaten is joined by Dougie Critchley and Sam Obaseki to run their fingers over the Ballon D'Or rankings. They take a look at the top 15 names and play a simple game of higher or lower - do Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci deserve their spots? Has Romelu Lukaku actually had a better 12 months than Erling Haaland? What on earth are Kevin De Bruyne and Cristiano Ronaldo doing so high up? Then they get on to Jorginho in third spot - we bet you can guess who was trying to fight his corner tooth and nail! Then of course, who deserved the award more - Lionel Messi or Robert Lewandowski? We're sure you'll have a say on what we have to say so be sure to let us know - enjoy!

146: How Steven Gerrard Can Fix Aston Villa
4081
It's an old school episode of the podcast today as Joe Thomlinson, Chris Hamill and Zac Djellab debate how they can fix Aston Villa. After discussing the various issues under Dean Smith, the trio identify who they would want to take over at the club (this was filmed literally hours before Steven Gerrard was confirmed), and which players the incoming manager should target. William Saliba, Joachim Maelhe and Renato Sanches all come up - would they improve the side at all? It's a really insightful discussion, honest! Enjoy!

145: REVEALED: Arsene Wenger's Biggest Regret With Arsenal
1301
On this very special episode of the Extra Time Podcast, Michael McCubbin chats to Christian Jeanpierre, director of Arsene Wenger: Invincible, to discuss the making of the film and Jeanpierre’s experience of knowing Wenger since his early days managing in France.

From his upbringing in rural Alsace, to his courageous stint in Japan and the scepticism that greeted his arrival at Arsenal in 1996, Invincible covers a lot of ground that casual fans may have otherwise not known about. But his glory years at Highbury are also well documented, with Patrick Vieira, Ian Wright, Thierry Henry and even Sir Alex Ferguson laying bare their experiences with Wenger in the early late 90s and early 2000s. Wenger also reveals his biggest regrets as Arsenal boss.

Should he have left North London sooner? How did the move to the Emirates effect him? And how did he cope with the pressure of the UK press? Invincible is out in UK cinemas on November 11th, and is available on other platforms from November 22nd.

144: The Premier League Managerial Merry-Go-Round
3030
On this week's podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Chelsea TV's Zac Djellab and the lesser-spotted James Waine to discuss the current managerial merry-go-round. Nuno Espirito Santo? Gone! Steve Bruce? Gone! Dean Smith and Rafa Benitez? Going...or staying? Then of course the ins - Antonio Conte has arrived at Spurs and will presumably be taking the big office off Fabio Paratici's hands, whilst Newcastle don't seem to have any plan behind the scenes. Unai Emery said no (wisely), so could Eddie Howe be on the way in? James even proposes a return to the Premier League for Sam Allardyce. Surely not? It's all a very fluid situation. Enjoy!

143: Do Manchester United Really Need To Sack Solskjaer?
3607
On this week's episode of the Extra Time podcast, there's only one thing they can really talk about. Patrick van Straaten is joined by Sam Obaseki and Michael McCubbin to talk all things Manchester United, and chiefly, is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the right man for the job? If he does go, who should be his replacement? Sam likes the idea of Brendan Rodgers, whereas Michael plumps for Mauricio Pochettino. Of course there's been talk of Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane too, but could Erik Ten Hag be an outside choice for the role, and how is managing Ajax different to stepping out at Old Trafford? It's a fun one, and as always, a great chat. Enjoy!

142: Is Mohamed Salah Really Worth £400k per Week?
3205
In this weeks Extra Time podcast Patrick van Straaten is joined by Sam Obaseki and Henry Hill to discuss whether Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah is really worth the £400k per week contract he is asking for! He will be 34 by the time he deal he wants ends, so is it really worth the expenditure? They also discuss Raheem Sterling's world class credentials, debate whether West Ham are now the 4th best team in the Premier League right now, and reveal if Patrick actually likes anyone at Football Daily..

141: An Alternate Look At The Ballon D'Or
2985
It's a Continental Club takeover this week on the podcast as Dougie Critchley and Michael McCubbin join Henry Hill for a slightly different episode. With the Ballon D'or 2021 nominations being released, the trio take a look at the award since 2008, when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo began their duopoly. If this pair didn't exist, who would have won each year instead? A lot of talk about Andres Iniesta and Xavi, naturally, but also fond memories of Manuel Neuer, Franck Ribery and Wesley Sneijder come up. Has Neymar deserved one on merit in the last few years, and how the hell did Luis Suarez not win it that one year? It's a great chat.

140: Who is the Player of the Season So Far?
2995
It's a special one this week, as Patrick van Straaten is joined by Sam Obaseki and, making his first and possibly last appearance as a guest on the podcast, Sonny Snelling! Of course with Sonny on, the first topic of discussion is Spurs. Is Nuno the right man for the job, should they have sold Harry Kane in the summer, and will they qualify for Europe this season? Then they talk Liverpool v. Manchester City, arguably the best Premier League game in a very long time, with Phil Foden, Mo Salah, Bernardo Silva and Rodri all getting some love, before a brief chat about Claudio Ranieri taking over at Watford - is he doomed? They round off by deciding who has been player of the season so far. Sonny surprises everyone by naming a West Ham player. Enjoy!

139: Which Manager Will Be Sacked Next?
2561
This week on the podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Zac Djellab and Joe Thomlinson as they run their fingers down the list of the managers most likely to be sacked. Steve Bruce at Newcastle is favourite, whilst Arsenal's Mikel Arteta remains with low odds despite three straight fixtures. Daniel Farke needs to dig Norwich out of a hole after six straight defeats, and Xisco be the next manager to face the chop, seeing as he manages a trigger-happy Watford side? Spurs' Nuno Espirito Santo is facing early criticism from the fans, whilst fellow newly-appointed boss Bruno Late is navigating a tricky start with Wolves. Then there's Ralph Hasenhuttl - he arrived in the Premier League to plenty of fanfare, but after three years has his Southampton side seen any progress? It's another belter - we hope you enjoy it!

138: Who Has The Best Starting XI In The Premier League?
3503
Patrick van Straaten steps back into host this week's episode and he is joined by Sam Obaseki and James Waine. Perfect accompaniment for the topic of discussion today - which Premier League team has the best starting eleven? It ultimately boils down to three teams, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. Sam is vehemently pro-Chelsea, James is a Manchester City fan but slightly more open to reason, whilst Patrick reckons over half of Liverpool's ideal starting eleven might be the best in their position in the world. And as ever, when Patrick and Sam are on the same show, voices are raised and arguments begin, all whilst James sits sniggering in the background. It's a good one, you don't want to miss it. Enjoy!

137: What's Next For Arsenal?
3782
It's time for the annual Arsenal podcast! Dougie Critchley, a neutral mediator, is joined today by two Arsenal fans, Patrick van Straaten and the lesser-spotted George Wright. They talk all things Gunners. Was their start to the season really that bad? At what point does sacking Mikel Arteta make the most sense? They talk about what they don't like about the club, then what they do, giving a lot of airtime to the 'Hale End Kids' - Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe to you and me. They discuss future transfer plans and the need to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and how their transfers this summer have been good. Then someone mentions Granit Xhaka and the show goes off the rails; the Swiss international is a divisive character for sure. But somehow, this is actually a broadly positive podcast about Arsenal for a change. Is the future really that bright in North London?

136: Football Daily Rank The BEST Strikers In The Premier League
2646
Henry Hill once again hosts, but this time finds Zac Djellab and Michael McCubbin sitting alongside him. This week, they go through all 20 Premier League teams and take a look at their primary striking options, and give them a good old rank. Who's elite? How good do you have to be if you want to be knocking on the door instead of just a solid marksman? And who do we want to send back to the Championship? Some are no-brainers, like Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku, but where does Timo Werner fit in? Is Jamie Vardy still elite? Just how good is Michail Antonio these days? And then there's the harder decisions - we all love Danny Welbeck, but is he good enough? If they're a Premier League striker, we talk about them here. Probably. Enjoy!

135: Was This The Craziest Transfer Deadline Day Ever?
3200
This week's episode sees Dougie Critchley and Chris Hamill team up with Henry Hill to cast their eye over everything that happened in football on August 31st, 2021. The transfer window may have closed but the trio kept their minds open as they attempted to understand why some clubs made moves they did. All the big deals are covered, including Antoine Griezmann being replaced by Luuk De Jong at Barcelona, West Ham making the double signing of Nikola Vlasic and Alex Kral, Spurs' acquisition of Emerson Royal and Crystal Palace's swoop for Odsonne Edouard. Daniel James, Saul Niguez, Marc Cucurella and many more are also discussed - if a player moved on deadline day, they talk about him here. It's an episode not to be missed.

134: Transfers That Have To Happen Before The End Of The Window!
3336
On this week's episode, Henry Hill is joined by Patrick van Straaten and Samuel Obaseki to cast their eye over everything transfer-related. They take the top six clubs (plus one - Arsenal or Leicester, take your pick), and bring up a few names each should be looking at. Before that though, they discuss the Kylian Mbappe situation now Real Madrid have finally put a bid in for the PSG man, and whether or not Mino Raiola should be commanding all that money for his client Erling Haaland, who probably doesn't care about any of it. So who should Man City target up front - Lautaro Martinez or Harry Kane (yes we filmed this before his announcement, you don't need to tell us), and should Chelsea prioritise a centre-back in Jules Kounde, or Saul Niguez in midfield? Patrick explains why Rodrigo Bentancur is perfect for Man Utd, whilst Spurs and Leicester lack any decent squad depth - could one of them go for Philippe Coutinho? Then of course, they talk Arsenal, and Patrick is surprisingly optimistic. Maybe it's because he's a new dad. Enjoy!

133: Why Manchester United Will Finish Above Liverpool This Season
3609
He's back...Patrick van Straaten is back in the host's chair, and is joined by Joe Thomlinson and SamObaseki. They play a game of over/under - Patrick provides three scenarios, and the trio discuss the likelihood of it happening. Will Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang score more than 12 Premier League goals? Will Manchester United finish above Liverpool? Will Barcelona finish below third in La Liga? Find out the trio's opinions on those here. Then Sam asks about Aston Villa and their hopes for the upcoming campaign, they discuss what it should take for Spurs to accept an offer for Harry Kane from Manchester City, before rounding up with an intense discussion on Romelu Lukaku. Is this a redemption tour for the Belgian? Sam backs Chelsea, whilst Joe and Patrick are team Lukaku. Enjoy!

132: Will This Championship Season Be The Best Ever?
2582
This week on the podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Championship know-it-all Will Brazier to take a look at the season aead for England's second tier. They discuss the managerial merry-go-round, which saw Scott Parker join Bournemouth, Slaviska Jokanovic take over at Sheffield United and Marco Silva moving to Fulham. They look at the big money transfers, of which Harry Wilson is really the only one, and how the promoted teams could fare - will they all stay up? Then of course they make their predictions - it's looking good if you're a West Brom fan, but not if you like Derby County. Enjoy!

131: Will Chelsea Challenge For The Premier League Title?
3181
On this week's episode of the Extra Time podcast, Michael McCubbin takes over hosting duties and is joined in the virtual studio by Sam Obaseki and Zac Djellab. And what do those two have in common? That's right, they're Chelsea fans, and yes, this is an episode all about their favourite football club. After Thomas Tuchel's takeover, the Blues finished top four, reached the FA Cup Final and of course won the Champions League - will the German manager deliver again? The club have made no moves of note in the transfer market, where do they need to strengthen, and who else do they need to sell? And of course, the big question. Will Chelsea challenge for the Premier League title? All that and more this week. Enjoy!

After the news that contract negotiations are stalling with Jordan Henderson, the trio discuss other possible contract decisions that the club will have to make in coming years. Do all of the front three deserve a new deal, or is one of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino on the way out? 2963
On this week's episode of Extra Time, Henry Hill is joined by Michael McCubbin and Sam Obaseki as they cast their eye over the upcoming EURO2020 semi final games. First they talk Spain v. Italy, where the battle will be won or last, raving about Pedri and whether or not Alvaro Morata will actually find the back of the net. As for Italy, after discussing how big a loss Leonardo Spinazzola is, they talk about Gianluigi Donnarumma's impressiveness in goal and that going forward Lorenzo Insigne will be the difference maker. Then of course, it's England v. Denmark. The trio big up England, as you'd expect, talking about the likes of Raheem Sterling, Declan Rice and Harry Maguire, before remembering that Denmark are also really good at football, and how Joakim Maehlr and Mikkel Damsgaard are rising stars, and of course Kasper Schmeichel and Simon Kjaer are imperious in defence. This podcast is everything you need know about the EURO2020 semi finals.

On this week's podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Dougie Critchley and Chris Hamill to run through some of football's most unbelievable records. Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo matching Ali Daei's record of 109 international goals, Henry quizzes the pair on their niche football knowledge, including the amount of goals 299-capped Christine Sinclair has scored for Canada, how fast the hardest recorded goal was, the longest domestic unbeaten run and the amount of goals goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni managed to score in his career. It's an entertaining episode full of facts, you'll almost definitely something new if nothing else.

On this week's podcast, Dougie Critchley is joined by Chris Hamill and Sam Obaseki to run through a few transfers we expected to happen but have fallen through at the last minute. Aston Villa beat Arsenal to the signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich, despite almost two years of rumours linking the Gunners to the Argentine. Gini Wijnaldum looks set for PSG after twelve months of talks linking him with former boss Ronald Koeman at Barcelona. And then there's Antonio Conte, who many thought was set for Spurs before, well, Spurs got in the way of themselves. Dougie also runs through his Fanteam squad - there's still time for you to sign up and play along!

On this week's podcast, Chris Hamill and Joe Thomlinson sit down to build their dream EURO2020 squads - within a budget of course. With a fantasy £105M to play with, the pair select eleven starters and four subs, and both opted for a 3-4-3 formation to maximise the points available. Only two of their players are the same, with differences all over the pitch - Donnarumma or Lloris in goal? Will Luis Enrique start Jordi Alba or Jose Gaya? Kevin de Bruyne or Bruno Fernandes? Jadon Sancho or Mason Mount? Also, with Memphis Depay down as a midfielder, you can bet we talk about him again, and Joe picks the three cheapest Scotsmen to stick on the bench, purely at Hamill's expense. Enjoy!

123: Who Should Be In The England Squad?
3297
On this week's podcast, Henry Hill is joined by Dougie Critchley and Sam Obaseki to dissect Gareth Southgate's recent England squad announcement. The trio look at players omitted from the 33-man provisional side, including James Maddison, Patrick Bamford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, before trying to work out which seven players should be left off the plane (or team bus). The key discussions boil down to which one of Mason Greenwood, Bukayo Saka or Ollie Watkins should Southgate take, whether or not Jesse Lingard should make the final 26, and of course, The Right Back Dilemma. Who should miss out - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James or Kieran Trippier? Sam thinks one thing, Henry thinks another, and Dougie, love of all things European football, is left to mediate - his decision may surprise you. Enjoy!

122: The Players Your Club Should Sign This Summer
2667
On this week's episode of Extra Time, Henry Hill and Dougie Critchley sit down to discuss some of the biggest transfer rumours ahead of the summer window. They look at Manchester United's centre back dilemma, and whether Pau Torres or Raphael Varane is a more sensible transfer, before looking at Leicester City's striker issue. Tammy Abraham is unhappy at Chelsea, but Odsonne Edouard could prove a cheap alternative. They can't work out what Chelsea need to do, before of course having a chat about Harry Kane and Manchester City. This episode may have been recorded six hours before the Kane transfer news broke on Monday evening, but it goes to show that here at Football Daily we really do have our finger on the pulse of everything football - and get a thumbnail of course. Enjoy!

121: Extra Time Meets Ivan Toney: Brentford, the Premier League, and Racism
2164
Many thanks to EA and the EFL for getting us time with top striker Ivan Toney! Sam Obaseki and Zac Djellab sit down with the Brentford striker and Championship Golden Boot winner. They discuss everything in his career to date, from breaking through at Northampton Town so early and his big move to Premier League side Newcastle United, to his various loan moves away from St James Park and of course, his form this season with Brentford. The 25 year old also discusses what he looks for when he moves club, the songs fans sing about him, and setting his own targets before the season starts. There's a brief pause when his child gets in on the action, before they go on to talk about racism, taking a knee, the social media blackout and what more can be done in the fight against racism in football. Enjoy!

120: The Big Fat Championship Show Of The Year
2791
On this week's edition of the Extra Time podcast, Henry Hill takes the reins as the only member of the FD team to support a Championship side, although this was recorded before Fulham's inevitable demise. He is joined by friend of the channel Will Brazier to discuss all things Championship, from Norwich and Watford's immediate returns to the Premier League, Ivan Toney's incredible goalscoring exploits, Barnsley actually being exciting and Wayne Rooney being a good manager for a few weeks before almost getting Derby relegated. If you like English football's second tier, this is the show for you. If you don't, then we'd appreciate you listening anyway - it's a really good episode. Enjoy!

119: Inter triumphant, Lille expectant, and chaos at Old Trafford
2818
On this week's episode not-quite-father Patrick van Straaten is joined by Henry Hill and Sam Obaseki, as they muse over European football's talking points - but not before the two of them try to guess the name of Patrick's imminent baby. Inter Milan have finally won Serie A, but can they sustain another challenge along with Europe next year? Lille are four games away from making history in Ligue 1, but with PSG breathing down their necks, can they hold on? Finally, they discuss the utter chaos that went on at Old Trafford that saw Manchester United's game against Liverpool postponed, and what that could mean for the future of the Glazers at the club.

And of course, the big question - will Patrick be here next week? Only one way to find out.

118: The Next Tottenham Manager (and the Carabao Cup)
2163
On this week's episode, Dougie Critchley and I laugh about the extremely one-sided Carabao Cup final, before diving into a discussion of the possible candidates to take over the managerial role at Spurs. We examine the suitability of the leading names - Nagelsmann, Marcelino, Potter, Rodgers, and ten Hag - as well as the state of the squad and the current antipathy between board and fans. Overall it's more positive about Tottenham than you might expect (but still does contain a lot of laughing).

117: The European Super League: A Discussion
2149
On this week's podcast, Patrick van Straaten is joined by Zac Djellab and Dougie Critchley as they react to the birth of the European Super League. Long-discussed at the highest levels of the sport, the competition took a step closer to reality over the weekend, as twelve of Europe's biggest sides announced that they'll be taking part in the tournament as "founding clubs" - and sparking a huge backlash, as pundits, fans, and football authorities condemned the plans. But what would the effects be on the game? Can we take the criticism seriously? And what does this mean for us as fans? We present our unfiltered thoughts.

116: El Clásico, UCL, Bread is Bread
3083
For this episode, Sam Obaseki and Henry Hill joined me to discuss El Clasico and a Spanish title race which has suddenly become interesting, before a more disorganised chat about the Champions League, where Sam was blinded by his love of the Worst Club in London and predicted that Chelsea will win the whole thing. Then we staged a dramatic reading of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's weird exchange about when they would and would not feed their children. It's been an odd week.

Mike Atkins wrote the title for this week's episode and I couldn't improve on it.

115: 2021's Biggest Football Failures
2591
On this week's podcast, I'm joined by Joe Thomlinson to discuss the many disappointments and failures of the football season. We kick off with Liverpool and Tottenham, who have both underwhelmed but for very different reasons, before taking a trip to the continent to examine the abortive title charges of Juventus and Borussia Dortmund. There's also time for a patented Thomlinson rant about VAR. Join us for the year in Schadenfreude!

114: Who Should Your Club Sell?
3475
Hello podheads and welcome back to the Extra Time podcast, which this week welcomes Dougie Critchley to the video call to discuss the worst players at the best clubs. That's right, this week we're combing through the rosters of the big six (not really a thing anymore) to decide who can and should be culled, with both unsurprising and controversial results. It's a good opportunity to slander all your faves.

We also briefly discuss the Football v Transphobia campaign and the work going on to confront this issue, which affects all of us. For more information, head to www.footballvhomophobia.com/fvt/ or consider tweeting about the ways that trans fans, players, and pundits enrich your experience of the game.

Football is for everyone, and the only people excluded from this terrible sport should be the people with the good sense not to take an interest in the first place.

113: The Europa League Battle and Liverpool's Future
3345
Henry Hill returns to the podcast this week for a look at the teams competing for the Europa League spots, and what failure/success would mean for each one. West Ham, Everton, and Aston Villa would surely be happy with their improvement this campaign, while Tottenham and Arsenal are bound for disappointment, and we discuss what effect missing out would have on Arteta and Mourinho, as well as talking about Liverpool's extraordinary season, and how their transfer decisions could be shaped by the next 10 weeks.
Mar 23, 2021
112: TuChelsea and the North London Derby
2625
On the podcast this week, I'm joined by Sam Obaseki to discuss Thomas Tuchel's impact on Chelsea. Along the way we discuss players he likes, those who could be sold, areas to strengthen, and the stylistic adjustments Tuchel has made, as well as the team's hopes for the rest of the season. Then it's on to the North London Derby and Tottenham's weird conservatism under Jose Mourinho. Finally, there's a look at the rumours than Sergio Aguero could join Barcelona, and the amazing make-believe world of Pele and his 1000 imaginary goals.

111: The Relegation Kerfuffle & Myths from the Premier League
3155
This week, FD's resident relegation expert (Fulham fan) Henry Hill joins the pod to discuss the relegation battle. We touch on Fulham rising, Newcastle sinking, Burnley bobbing around as normal, and the fully submerged West Brom and Sheffield United, before moving on to some of the prevalent myths and narratives this season, including Liverpool's transfer business, Anthony Martial, and Marcos Alonso. It's a good one!
Mar 09, 2021
110: The Rise of Phil Foden and England's Attack at the Euros
2127
This week, resident Phil Foden expert Dougie Critchley comes to the pod for a discussion of the youngster's development this season and how he can slot into both Man City and the England team going forward. That inevitably turns into two non-English people discussing England, and what their best attacking lineup could be at the Euros, as well as the tactical and stylistic issues facing Gareth Southgate.

109: Callum Hodson-Odoi & Joe Gomez: How South London Made Us
1840
Watch 'Rise Of A South London Baller' on YouTube!

Sam Obaseki presents two uncut interviews with some of the Premier League's brightest stars - Callum Hudson-Odoi (1:11) and Joe Gomez (13:28). Both brought up in South London, they share their childhood experience of coming to age in an area that has also produced the likes of Jadon Sancho and Wilfried Zaha, how it helped them adapt to playing sport at the highest level, and what they think needs to be done to protect the next generation of young ballers from South London.

These were part of a documentary made by Sam called 'Rise Of A South London Baller', a deep dive into how the South London culture and environment moulded players playing in the Premier League and around the world, and also features interviews from SE Dons captain Big G and the owner of Lambeth Tigers, a youth football club in the heart of England's capital that have recently partnered with Sancho. Other organisations also feature and speak on what more can be done to help the next generation of football stars growing up in this area and the hardships they may face.

108: Upsets Across Europe, and 5 Years of FD
3069
A hectic weekend of European football requires some serious discussion, and Chris Hamill joins me, Patrick van Straaten, on the podcast to talk Inter's victory over Milan, and the various defeats suffered by Atletico Madrid, Bayern, and PSG, as well as those teams' prospects in the Champions League.

It's also been 5 years since Joe, Chris, and I started working together at FD this month, so we took some time to talk about where the channel has been and where it might be going, with some reluctant praise for Joe.

107: How Can Mourinho Save His Job at Tottenham?
3435
Tottenham have experienced a tragic/hilarious downturn in their season, so Dougie Critchley returns to the podcast to talk all things Spurs with me, Patrick van Straaten. We dig into their campaign so far and where Mourinho might be getting things wrong tactically, before finding some signings in key positions they might want to consider in the summer window.
Feb 16, 2021
106: What's Wrong With Liverpool, and How to Fix Refs
2549
This week Michael McCubbin and Sam Obaseki make long-awaited returns to the podcast to chew over Man City's 4-1 demolition of Liverpool over the weekend. We talk about the game, about Phil Foden's development, and what exactly Liverpool's issues are right now, as well as the Ruben Dias penalty incident and the contentious refereeing decisions in the Prem of late. Then it's off to Italy for some grudging praise of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and yet another round of Scudetto predictions in this ridiculous season.
Feb 09, 2021
105: How To Fix Barcelona (Without Messi)
3090
It's time for our yearly discussion of the mess at Barcelona, and joining me on this week's episode is Dougie Critchley, expert on all things financial and ready to do what a host of Spanish football executives and mid-tier managers have failed to do: make Barca an intelligent, self-sustaining operation. Inevitably, we talk about the club's INSANE debts, the cost of keeping Lionel Messi last summer, and the saleable assets in the squad, before moving on to the team's areas of need and who they could realistically target. It makes pretty grim listening for Barca fans, but it's very funny for everyone else.

104: Havertz, Partey, Thiago: the Best and Worst Big Transfers So Far
3299
This week, Henry Hill joins me to examine the performances of the most expensive summer signings so far this season. Inevitably, that takes us to Stamford Bridge, where Frank Lampard's failure to get the best out of Werner and Havertz cost him his job. How good (or bad) have they actually been? Then we move on to Arsenal, where Thomas Partey is both very good and hasn't actually made a difference to the team as a whole, and Liverpool, who seem to have found a Thiago-shaped scapegoat for all their problems. Also there's some Donny van de Beek chat, and continued confusion over what exactly the Arthur-Pjanic swap was meant to accomplish.

103: Where Next for Europe's Unemployed Managers?
2754
We're approaching sacking season in European football, and this week Chris Hamill joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to discuss possible destinations for the continent's best out-of-work coaches. Max Allegri is now approaching two years without a job, and it's hard to tell where a defensive coach - even an elite one - could go next. I out forward my case for Allegri as England manager. Then we talk over Thomas Tuchel as a candidate for Chelsea or Juventus, as well the squad issues and expectations facing rookie bosses Lampard and Pirlo. Finally, we whip through some other intriguing managers, from Sarri to Jardim, and Chris runs the rule over possible Neil Lennon replacements at Celtic.

102: Was Özil a Failure at Arsenal? Plus Serie A Title Race & Dembele
2709
Two guests for you this week, as I welcome Dave Jackson and Dougie Critchley to the show, to discuss Mesut Özil's impending departure from Arsenal, and the Italian title race plus Moussa Dembele's move to Atletico Madrid respectively. Dave and I talk over what Özil's signing meant to Arsenal, the myth and reality of his performances at the club, how fans fell out of love with him, and our issues with Arteta's treatment of him. Then Dougie and I chew over Milan-Juventus and Roma-Inter for clues to the destination of this season's Scudetto, have a chat about Conte's weirdly attacking tactics so far, and finish up with an analysis of what Moussa Dembele will bring to Atleti and the transfer's effects on the Spanish and French title races.

101: Lampard In Trouble, United's Title Challenge, and Arsenal's Resurgence
3462
This week Joe Thomlinson and Patrick van Straaten chew over the Christmas fixtures to discuss which teams, managers, and players have enhanced or damaged their reputations over the festive period. We discuss the crisis at Chelsea and criticism of Timo Werner, Wolves' quiet decline, Man United's potential title charge, and the impact of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe on a directionless Arsenal side. Could Frank be sacked? Is Kieran Tierney better than Roberto Carlos? It's all here.

99: The End of Year Awards Show
4036
Chris Hamill joins me this week to hand out our awards for the year in football. We cover all the usual, from best player to best manager, trying to talk about some of the overperformers as well as the superstars, before ending with a few special awards for the heroes and villains of 2020. Along the way I complain about Arsenal fans and we both express our love for Marcus Rashford and hatred of the Tories. Thanks to everyone for listening this year, we appreciated your support in a tough time.

100: Predicting 2021 in Football
2860
For our penultimate show of the year, Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to predict 2021 in football. We cover the obvious stuff - the title race, the Champions League, the Euros - but also get into some potential shocks, from Arteta being sacked to Barcelona missing out on a UCL spot. Joe gets over-excited about Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and I make a bold call on what I hope is the Euro 2021 final. It's a fun one.

98: Dortmund Sack Favre, and Are Sheffield United the Worst PL Team Ever?
2185
On this week's episode Dougie and I chat about Lucien Favre's exit from Dortmund and what's next for BVB. Did their performances really merit him losing his job? Who can they target to replace him?

Then we get into the situation at Sheffield United, where the wheels have fallen off in spectacular fashion. Is there any way back (no)? Is there any point sacking Wilder?

Finally we touch on the Madrid derby, Liverpool's draw with Fulham, and I probably mention Arsenal, I don't even remember. Who cares, they lost.

97: Barca Bad, Bruno Brilliant, and Young Stars to Loan in January
3137
This week Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick van Straaten, for a roundup of all the big stories from the weekend (except Spurs beating Arsenal, because we've talked about Arsenal too much and was anyone really surprised by that result?). First, we've got Bruno Fernandes who is so good he sort of makes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer look worse, then Barca, who look terrible all by themselves right now. We also discuss Harry Kane's latest contribution to the world of fouling, and then chew over possible January destinations for three youngsters not getting minutes: Riqui Puig, Martin Odegaard, and William Saliba.

Enjoy!

94: Spurs Masterclass, Arsenal Disasterclass and Some Ibra Love
3331
On this week's episode, Patrick van Straaten and Henry Hill sit down to talk about the biggest news from the weekend. They start with Spurs' victory over a bereft Manchester City, before Henry backs Ibrahimovic to lead AC Milan to a long overdue Serie A crown. Then, when given the choice of talking about Barcelona or Arsenal, Henry allows Patrick to go on a 20 minute rant about whether or not Mikel Arteta is a good manager and how he never wanted to sign Thomas Partey at all. What else would you expect?

93: Why Atletico Madrid Will Win La Liga
2514
We've barely paid attention to Spanish football so far this campaign, but with Real Madrid and Barcelona underwhelming, Joe Thomlinson and Dougie Critchley join me this week to discuss the title race in La Liga, and why this could be Atletico Madrid's Year™. We dig into the dysfunction at the big sides, Zidane's inflexibility and Messi's possible decline, and even find time to shine a light on Real Sociedad, who might just be the best team in the league.

Joe Thomlinson and Chris Hamill join me this week to chew over the Premier League's relegation race, which has almost been forgotten amid the chaos at the top of the table. Just what exactly is going on, with Brighton playing like European challengers but struggling for points, and previously solid sides Burnley and Sheffield United propping up the table? Is there any hope for Fulham and West Brom? And could clubs like Newcastle get sucked in? We discuss.

2863
This week's podcast guest is Dougie Critchley, who joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to see how the 10 most expensive players of the summer are faring so far this campaign. Chelsea and Man City both splashed out huge sums for quick fixes, but are they working out so far? Is Thomas Partey enough to sort out Arsenal's issues? And what is going on with Juventus and Barcelona, whose ridiculous Arthur-Pjanic swap only looks stranger after a few weeks of the season?

90: Should Man City Replace Pep with Pochettino?
2766
This week, Joe Thomlinson and Chris Hamill join me on the podcast for what is meant to be a round-up episode, but quickly turns into yet another Arsenal conversation. Then we eventually get round to Man City, who have tried to cure their defensive woes by becoming boring. Has it worked? Is Pep done? Should the club try a non-bald manager? We answer basically none of these questions.

Then it's on to what we learned this week, which features Ajax pummelling Venlo and now regular segment Joe Apologises For His Previous Terrible Opinions.

89: What Is Going On With Arsenal?
3234
This week, I'm joined by George Wright to discuss all things Arsenal. Though currently riding high in the table, the Gunners are still pretty dull and had an odd window, with the much-heralded arrivals of Partey and Gabriel offset by the weird acquisition of Willian and departures for Torreira and Guendouzi. Just what sort of rebuild starts with shipping out young players? Then we get into the problems with the team, Arteta's (presumed) long-term plans, and the exciting crop of teenagers coming through the academy.

88: How Worried Are We About Juventus, PSG, and Bayern?
3116
We follow up our episode from a fortnight ago by examining the start big European clubs have made, and asking whether there's anything seriously wrong with them. PSG have picked up four red cards and some poor results already; Bayern lost their 32-match unbeaten streak; and Juve remain a big fat question mark as Pirlo works out whether he can play himself in midfield. Are there major causes for concern, or just early teething issues? Michael McCubbin and Dougie Critchley join me to find out.

87: Hot Takes: Why Arsenal Should Have Sold Aubameyang, and Potter > Lampard
3113
This week Chris Hamill and Joe Thomlinson join me, Patrick van Straaten, for a throwback to Hot Takes, one of our least popular formats. True to form, we massively overreact to the first four games of the season, with Chris declaring Graham Potter better than Frank Lampard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Joe claiming Everton will finish in the top 4. Then I have a look at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's terrible start to the season, and call the entire Arsenal fanbase stupid. Same same really.

85: How Worried Are We About The Premier League's Big Teams?

This week, Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick, to talk about four of the Prem's traditional powers: Man City, Man United, Chelsea, and Tottenham. All four have endured difficult starts to the season, are bedding in new players, and awaiting the arrival of others, but just how worried should we be by their results to date? Joe and I discuss City's weird squad, United's disappearing defence, Frank Lampard's tinkering, and the early arrival of third-season Mourinho in an attempt to get to the bottom of things.

Then Joe has opinions about the handball situation in One Thing We Learned.

84: Are Liverpool Building Their Next Great Team?
2321
This week, Dougie and I (Patrick) look at Liverpool's transfer business, which after a quiet start has exploded in the last few weeks. We dig into the stats to see what attracted the club to Kostas Tsimikas, go all heart-eyes-emoji about Thiago's arrival in the Premier League (and what it means for Wijnaldum), and then discuss Diogo Jota. How good is he right now, and how good can he be? And does this mean Klopp is planning a big sale in 2021? Then we talk One Thing We Learned, with some analysis of PSG's move for Dele Alli.

For once that means no talk of either of the Manchester clubs, but it's also the most we'll likely speak about Crystal Palace or Sheffield United all season. Enjoy!

82: The Premier League Preview
2771
Today, Dougie and Patrick discuss the new Premier League season and what we can expect from the dozens of new additions made over the course of the transfer window. Top 4 and relegation predictions were covered on last week's Sunday Vibes, so instead we talk over our best and worst transfers of the summer so far, which youngsters could make breakthroughs, and our hot takes on the season ahead, which are genuinely spicy.

81: How To Fix: European Round-Up
3005
This week, Henry Hill and Patrick discuss three clubs with different aims, different budgets, and different problems. First, we look at Atletico Madrid, and how they can add more goals and plan for the possible exit of Thomas Partey. Then it's Southampton, who, as always, are looking for creativity. And finally, to Roma, trying to find long-term heirs for Dzeko, Kolarov, and Chris Smalling I guess.

2516
Chris Hamill and Mike Atkins join Patrick on the pod this week to talk about the Champions League final. 79: Messi Out, Koeman In: The Mess at Barcelona
3370
What a week for Barcelona. In the space of a few days, Samuel Umtiti tested positive for Covid, they lost 8-2 to Bayern in the Champions League, Setien was sacked, Koeman targeted, ter Stegen ruled out until November following knee surgery, Messi said he wanted to leave, and Arthur was caught drunk-driving. On today's podcast, Patrick, Joe, and Michael McCubbin discuss Friday's game, the managerial landscape, and the mess which is the squad. Then we disagree about selling Messi.

78: Real Out Of Europe, Sarri Out Of Juventus, and Champions League Predictions!
2659
This week, Joe Thomlinson and Dougie Critchley join Patrick van Straaten to chat over the fallout from the Champions League round of 16. A sluggish Real Madrid got brutalised by Man City, Juve were embarrassed by Lyon, while Bayern continue to look unbeatable, and Barca continue to be bailed out by Messi. What did we learn heading into the quarter-finals? Can anyone beat Bayern? And what are Juventus doing hiring Pirlo as their new coach?

77: How To Fix Tottenham Hotspur

You asked for it, so we've brought it back! This week Patrick and Dougie look at how Jose Mourinho can rebuild Spurs, what a Jose Mourinho-type player actually is, and whether or not Jose Mourinho will even be at Spurs beyond next summer.

75: Lampard at Chelsea and Arteta at Arsenal: Year One Review
3484
On this week's episode, I am joined by legit Chelsea insider Zac Djellab to discuss Frank Lampard's first season with the Blues: their performances, their issues, their transfer business to date, and what else they need, as well as our predictions for next season.

Then Arsenal outsider George Wright hops on to chat all things Arsenal. We get into the changes under Arteta, the state of the squad, our hopes for the transfer window, and what we can expect from both the FA Cup final and the 2020/21 season. We even find time for some obligatory Unai Emery slander. The man is a clown.

74: The Summer's Best Unwanted Stars
2977
This week, Patrick and Dougie discuss the big clubs who could be trimming their squads this summer, and the bargains which could be had as a result. We chat over Luka Jovic's season and whether he'd still make sense for Leicester, Arsenal, or Milan; Matteo Guendouzi's fall from grace at the Emirates and a possible switch to PSG, Lyon, or Atletico; and Federico Bernardeschi and Juventus' team of arthritic pensioners who still manage to win Serie A every year. Then some quick transfer hits, including Benrahma to Arsenal (it's my podcast, I'll do as much Arsenal as I like), Aouar, Milik, and Kluivert. Enjoy!
Jul 14, 2020
73: Is The Top Four Done For Good? Plus Thiago to Liverpool
2663
This week's episode sees Henry Hill and Mike Atkins join Patrick on the podcast to talk about Man United's form and Chelsea's signings, and whether anyone will be able to compete with them for 3rd and 4th spot over the coming years, given the messes at Spurs and Arsenal. Then we roll into the rumours that Thiago Alcantara could swap Munich for Merseyside, and discuss whether Robert Lewandowski should win the Ballon d'Or over Messi.
Jul 07, 2020
72: Have Barcelona Made the Worst Transfer of the Summer?
2794
This week Chris Hamill returns to the podcast to discuss the Arthur-Pjanic swap, how stupid it is, and what it means for both players, Barcelona, and Juventus. Then we mull over Inter's capture of Achraf Hakimi - one of the best young fullbacks in the game right now - and how the Nerazzurri's long-term future might shape up with the Moroccan in the side.

This episode is brought to you by Harry's. For your £3.95 trial set, head to harrys.com/extra.

71: How Can Football Fight Racism?
2346
On this week's episode, Patrick is joined by Sam Obaseki to talk about football's response to the global political protests following the killing of George Floyd. We discuss the contribution of players, clubs, and football authorities to the process of removing racism both from the game and society, and the steps we, as fans, can take to move towards racial justice.

If you can, please consider signing petitions (for example those seeking justice for Shukri Abdi and Belly Mujinga), and writing to politicians or even your football club to demand specific commitments on tackling these problems. Whatever you've heard, sport has always been political, and governments and businesses can be forced to change their behaviour if we exert enough pressure.

70: Let's Try This Again: The Premier League Returns
2504
The Premier League is back, BACK, B A C K! Soon anyway. Patrick, Zac, and Henry look over the remaining fixtures and discuss the Champions League race and relegation battle, as well as the stand-out games and players for the run-in. Then we talk about conspiracy theories and the Moon being hollow.

69: Sancho, Werner, Koulibaly, Partey: Who Clubs Should Sign Instead
2648
This week Dougie and Patrick talk about the cheap alternatives to some of the biggest names on the transfer market this summer. We're all bored of Werner, Sancho, Koulibaly, and Partey, so who should your club buy instead of them, if those players prove too expensive? We turn up some interesting gems and some superstars-in-waiting, and do what is basically our recurring told-you-so segment at this point.

68: Is van Dijk the Best Premier League Defender Ever?
2406
Hello Extra-Timers, and welcome to this week's episode, which features Dave Jackson in his podcast debut and relative veteran Henry Hill, making his second appearance. These West London boys join Patrick van Straaten to discuss the return of the Premier League, Vincent Kompany's claim that VVD is the best PL defender ever, and whether Leon Bailey would be a good Leroy Sane replacement. Then it's onto lockdown past-times, including the now obligatory Cooking Corner (TM) with Patrick van Straaten. Enjoy!

67: Premier League Bottom Half XI
2089
This week Dougie and Patrick collaborate to build an XI out of the teams in the bottom half of the Premier League, taking time to discuss some of the division's unheralded stars and which lower-half heroes could hope for moves to bigger sides this summer. Then there's a debate over how high the team could finish.
May 26, 2020
66: Has Cancelling Ligue 1 Killed French Football?
2171
This week Patrick is joined by podcast debutant Henry Hill (not from Goodfellas) to discuss the controversy over the end of the French league season, and Lyon taking the French football authorities to court because they finished 7th (lol). They chat over what this means for the division and which players could leave cheaply this summer, before Patrick defends himself against his haters following his review of Joker on Twitter. Henry rounds things off with his movie hot takes, and to everyone's shock, he and Patrick agree that everyone else is stupid and wrong.

By the way, isn't it crazy that there are frozen pizzas called "Goodfella's"? Is that apostrophe enough to flummox copyright law? If you are a lawyer please let us know on Twitter how such a thing is possible. You know what, if you read all this, hit me up on Twitter and I'll give you a shout-out on the next episode (if I remember).

65: Bundesliga Predictions, Sane to Bayern, and Jorginho to Juventus
2724
On this week's Extra Time, Patrick is joined by Mike Atkins and Zac Djellab to discuss the return of the Bundesliga and make predictions for the end of the season. Then we move on to Leroy Sane's cut-price move to Bayern, and Zac gives us the Chelsea perspective on Juve's interest in Jorginho. We also chat over dream international team and manager match-ups, and Patrick complains about Dubai again.

2140
This week on Extra Time, Patrick and Dougie discuss this summer's transfer market, the financial difficulties facing the big clubs, and then discuss how ambitious teams like Arsenal and Valencia can go about building a CL-ready side for next season. We discuss the best free transfers, the biggest players with expiring contracts, and the release clauses worth triggering across Europe. 63: How To End The Season
1812
What's up podheads, welcome back to the 4th or 5th episode of the coronavirus podcasts. How is everyone doing? This week, I (Patrick) am joined on the show by Mike Atkins and Michael McCubbin to talk about the various options for ending the season, what their benefits and difficulties are, and which ones would make Liverpool fans angriest. Remember the podcast is now available on FD's Youtube if you prefer to consume it that way, and if you're over 18 and like beer, why not sign up with Beer52 at beer52.com/extra and bag yourself 8 beers for just £5? Might as well drink through all this.

62: The Best Premier League Team of the 2010s Draft
3713
On this episode of the Extra Time podcast, Patrick van Straaten is joined by Chris Hamill and Zac Djellab to draft competing teams made up of the best players to appear in the Premier League over the last decade. Zac and Chris didn't understand at first because they didn't read the script, but the idea got clearer after I drafted Luis Suarez. Head to Twitter to vote on which team turned out best (hint: it's not Chris').

This week's episode is brought to you by Beer52. Head to Beer52.com/extra to pick up your first case of 8 craft beers for just £5! It's a lockdown, you might as well drink. That's not their slogan, we made that up.

61: Ndombele to Barca, Real Madrid go wild, and Sancho out
1522
On this week’s episode of Extra Time, Patrick and Dougie discuss some of the biggest transfer rumours to hit the headlines this week.

First, we turn our attention to Real Madrid, who are apparently keen to rebuild their frontline with moves totalling nearly half a billion euros for Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe. But are those the right moves? Is Pogba right for their midfield? Will they have to sell Asensio or Hazard to make it work? Then we look at how Dortmund might respond to Sancho leaving. Paper talk suggests they’re already targeting Valencia’s Ferran Torres as a replacement, but there are question marks over his experience.

Next up is Barcelona’s interest in Tanguy Ndombele, who could be on his way out of Tottenham after falling out with Jose Mourinho. Could he be the man to complement Frenkie de Jong in the middle of the park?

Finally, we do a quick yes/no round-up of the other major rumours including Kingsley Coman also to Barca, Luka Jovic to Arsenal, Jack Grealish to Everton, and what Atletico, Chelsea, and Man United might do in the market.

60: The Worst Man United Player Ever - Joe's Life In Football
2325
This week we bring you a special episode, taking you inside Joe Thomlinson's head (fresh from a haircut he gave himself with a beard trimmer). From his earliest memories of the game to the unexpected players he loves and hates, we talk about his ups and downs as a Man United fan, and I get in a lot of digs about how terrible United are now.

Let us know if you like the format, and who you'd like to see interviewed next.

We also discuss cutting your own hair, and going back in time.

54: Man City Banned - Can They Recover?
3915
Zac Djellab, Dougie Critchley, and Patrick van Straaten discuss Man City's Champions League ban, and what it changes for their finances and transfers, as well as the new Premier League top 5 race. We examine the club's insistence that they did nothing wrong, but also that the evidence UEFA has that they did something wrong was stolen, and if they did do anything wrong it probably shouldn't be wrong in the first place, and also that it's a witch hunt. Plus some Pep slander and #UnpopularOpinions about how maybe taking money from slave states might not be totally cool. Enjoy!

On the final regular podcast of the year, Patrick, Mike Atkins, and Joe sit down to discuss Everton's expected appointment of Carletto, Serie A's let's say misguided anti-racism campaign, and why no-one should ever join Manchester United unless they've got a mortgage to pay.

Then we roll into our best and worst of the decade, where we don't talk about Brexit. It's pretty good! And when Alex Iwobi makes the team of the year, I expect apologies from all of you in my mentions. Happy Christmas!

January is a funny old time isn't it? The renewed optimism, the fraught tension of losing your talisman, fans of the chasing pack clamouring for a mid season saviour. It's a kaleidoscope of madness. And, on this week's episode, the boys unpick it with their hallmark, in-depth charm (Chris ran out of time. Apparently you need a PHD to work out the ongoing drama that is Leeds).  The good, the bad and the ugly at the 'business end' of the season - all in 2 hrs. Enjoy!
