The "No One Size Fits All" Approach to Weight Loss
4485
TW: Diet, weight
Join Dr. Danielle Belardo and her expert of the week, registered nutritionist and researcher specializing in sustainable weight loss, Marie Spreckley. In her latest research, Marie posed the question — what does the experience of trying to achieve sustainable weight loss entail after completing a 1-year weight-loss program followed by one year of predominantly self-directed support? Tune in to hear the fascinating results and why there is no "one size fits all" approach when it comes to weight loss and health.
Danielle and Marie discuss:
The importance of a multidisciplinary, empathetic, and compassionate approach for success in weight loss and weight management
How personalized, agile treatment approaches have the potential to enhance long-term treatment outcomes for patients
The complexities of obesity and how it’s not *always* the right time to lose weight
How family, social commitments, food environment, time, and structure can impact weight loss
Marie Spreckley is a clinician, researcher, and academic specializing in obesity and weight management. She is currently in the final month of her PhD, which focuses on investigating behavioral determinants that increase the likelihood of achieving long-term weight loss outcomes with her own patient cohort. She also runs a private weight loss practice in London and teaches the Master of Science in Obesity and Weight Management at the University of South Wales. Prior to this, she spent over a decade working as a registered nutritionist for the NHS and in private practice, with a particular focus on sustainable weight loss and overall health improvements.

Functional “Medicine” - Fake Diagnoses & Predatory Tests (Part 1)
3984
Join Dr. Danielle Belardo and her double dose of experts this week, registered dietitian Dr. Kevin Klatt and board certified family physician Dr. Spencer Nadolsky. This trio is fired up and ready to debunk their favorite controversial topic, functional medicine. The world of social media has created a lot of movement in alternative spaces of medicine and nutrition, and it is hard to tell fact from fiction as it “feels” and “sounds” a lot like real medicine. With the claim to address the root cause of illness and restore health, you would think this practice would be standardized with a list of guidelines, but it’s not, and that can be a very slippery slope. On today’s episode, Danielle, Spencer, and Kevin dive into the predatory nature of integrative health practitioners, how more lab tests are not always the answer, and which fake diagnoses you deserve to know the truth about.

A discussion on evidence based nutrition with Kevin Klatt, PhD, RD
Before todays episode starts, we want to acknowledge the 122,000 Americans who have lost their lives to COVID19. We acknowledge the great challenge that those in healthcare and others on the front lines are facing, as well as the many individuals who have lost a loved one to COVID19. Our hearts also go out to the many lives affected by the sequelae of the pandemic, including the many individuals who have lost their jobs, and have been under financial and psychological stress.
We DENOUNCE incidents of racism and violence that continue to ravage the black community. We want to acknowledge the heart breaking murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others who have lost their lives to longstanding systemic racism. We stand behind the black community who have our endless support. Black lives matter. Please support black owned businesses and charities if you are financially able to at this time. Scroll down our show notes for an extensive list of black vegan influencers and black owned vegan businesses.
Eminence versus Evidence Based Nutrition.
This interview is an important one. Nutrition science can be so confusing. With so many dietary groups advocating for various different dietary patterns, how do we know what to believe? Nutrition science is a complex living organism, and we are working on projects to help get the accurate scientific information out there.

On this episode - we discuss how certain metabolites produced in the gut are associated with cardiovascular disease.
Your gut microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 MILLION genes! (150 x more than humans!) Could what we eat change the diversity and species of bacteria that reside in our gut? Could this change our risk for cardiovascular disease?
And what IS TMAO? It is one piece of a massive, complicated puzzle. We have barely scratched the surface as to what is yet to come in gut microbiome research, but the work from Dr. Tang, and Dr. Hazen, and their colleagues at Cleveland Clinic is a fascinating beginning.
About Dr. Tang
W. H. Wilson Tang, MD, is Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Clinical Genomics; Research Director, and staff cardiologist in the Section of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Medicine in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Tang is Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
