It wouldn’t take long before a suspect was in custody, however, at the time of trial it was discovered there were several unidentified types of DNA found at the crime scene. Would the unidentified DNA become a get out of jail free card for the killer? Or does this mean there was more than one attacker and police failed to arrest a second assailant?

Lost and found - Brittanee Drexel
2292
Join us on the next episode of Crime Salad where we examine the 2009 disappearance of Brittanee Drexel. A 17 year old girl who secretly went on a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a group of friends, never to return. For 13 years she was lost until investigators looked back through their original list of suspects and finally brought her remains home to her family. This case highlights the failures in our broken criminal justice system. If Brittanee’s murderer served his entire sentence for previously committed heinous crime, he never would have crossed paths with Brittanee Drexel on April 25th, 2009.

Covid Alibi - The Murder of Gretchen Anthony
2526
In March of 2020, Gretchen Anthony began sending texts to family and friends telling them she had tested positive for Covid-19. There was still so much unknown about the virus as the entire world began shutting down. Her family became highly concerned when they couldn’t get her on the phone. Many of the texts from Gretchen were filled with poor spelling and grammar. Then she stopped sharing her phone location with her 12 year old daughter. The last text anyone received from Gretchen said she was being transferred to a CDC covid site and would be placed on a ventilator, unable to communicate. After a wellcheck at her home by law enforcement, it became clear that someone was using Covid as an alibi to cover up a horrific crime. Join us on the next episode of Crime Salad where we examine a mind unraveling into paranoia ending in a senseless death of a beloved, Mother, Daughter, Sister and Friend.

Ordered to Die
2534
Kelly Turner’s daughter, Olivia Gant was the literal poster child for Colorado Children’s hospital. She appeared in dozens of their promotional videos and fundraising materials. Kelly, the mother of 3 children, two with significant health issues was a tireless advocate for her ill children. After the tragic death of seven year old Olivia, Kelly was able to devote more time to her other daughter. Would that devotion and advocacy have similarly tragic results? Find out on the next episode of Crime Salad.

CORRECTION:
We apologize for the wording of the DNR. The choice to not administer Narcan was a separate choice made by the mother/doctors. It was not part of the DNR.

Who Killed the Jabalees?
2054
Ronald and Christine Jabalee were found beaten and stabbed to death in the garage of their home in New Baltimore, Michigan in October of 2006. Letters written in blood were found underneath the jeep next to Christine's dead body, but the killer is believed to have mopped most of it up, making it indecipherable and the killer unidentifiable. Lack of any physical evidence and motive resulted in the acquittal of their eldest son, Ron Jabalee Jr., the singular suspect in the case, in 2010.

The Turpin Family Case: A House of Horrors
1786
Think for a minute about your neighbors, especially the ones you don’t know too well. Maybe there’s a quiet couple on your street who tend to keep to themselves. Sure, you might see them walking out to their car, or say hi in passing, or simply notice that they aren’t very social. But you don’t know much about them. Now imagine that you see that couple being arrested in front of their house and discover to your horror that they had 13 children inside that they chained to their beds and starved- 13 children who had been enduring abuse for years in your totally normal subdivision. That’s exactly what several Perris, California residents witnessed on January 14, 2018 when David and Louise Turpin were arrested on their quiet suburban street.

The Murder of Denise Anderson
1347
Everyone knew that Denise Anderson was being harassed by her ex-boyfriend, Sheldon Davis. He was stalking her, had physically assaulted her, vandalized her car, and threatened her. Denise had gone to the police three times looking for help. But the law was clear: the police couldn’t arrest Sheldon Davis on Domestic abuse charges, because Denise wasn’t dating him anymore. By law, they were just “estranged friends.” When her body was found at the end of the summer in 2019, dead inside a burning apartment, there really wasn’t any question about who killed Denise. Everyone only wondered, why wasn’t Sheldon stopped sooner?

In this case, there is no moral about remembering to lock the door behind you. There’s no advice on how to dress, where to go, or what to do to stay safe. In this case, 27 year old Lauren Giddings did everything right. She was friendly, compassionate, and caring towards her neighbor, a man a bit younger than her who everyone else thought was a bit too weird. Lauren joked that if he was dangerous, she would be the only one who was spared…. Because she always treated him right and with kindness. The Death of Kenneka Jenkins
1358
In some cases, the answer isn’t obvious. Sometimes a vital clue is still missing, the police are withholding evidence from the public, or there are some stories that just don’t add up. In this week's case, it seemed that even after all the evidence was released and the story seemed fairly straightforward, the public wasn't, and still isn’t, satisfied. In this episode we will cover the missing case of Keneeka Jenkins.

What Happened to Jelani Day
1445
Jelani Day was such a dedicated student that when he didn’t show up for class on August 24th, 2021, his professor immediately knew something was wrong. Jelani Day was such a caring son that when his mother texted him, and he didn’t call her back right away to chat, Carmen Bolden Day knew that something had happened to her baby. When his body was found in the Illinois River in a town he had no connection to weeks after his disappearance, the police seemed content to label his death a suicide or an accident--but with the facts and evidence gathered, Carmen and the rest of Jelani’s family are sure that Jelani didn’t end up in the water of his own accord. How did a young Black man with so much promise and things to live for wind up in a river of a small town an hour away from his home?

Some of the killers we’ve talked about had terrible childhoods filled with abuse and unimaginable grief. Some have convinced themselves that their potential gains, maybe money or protecting a secret, justify their crime. And while none of this justifies murder, it can helps us try to better make sense of a horrible tragedy. But there is no such motive or sympathetic backstory for the man who brutally killed Karen Buckley, a 24 year old Irish nurse and master’s student, who was enjoying a night out with friends in Glasgow in April 2015. As the judge said in his sentencing, Alexander Pacteau, was a “callous and calculating” murderer who took the life of a young woman who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Disappearance of Cassidy Rainwater
1271
To an outsider, it might seem like there isn’t a lot going on in Lebanon, Missouri. There is a Route 66 museum, a Walmart, a bowling alley, and a few shops. It’s less than 15 square miles and has about 14,000 residents. But if current trends hold, there’s a 1 in 19 chance that you will be a victim of a violent crime, making it one of the most violent areas in the United States. Because of its violent past and proximity to the Ozarks--an area with a surprising amount of unsolved missing person's cases--Cassidy Rainwater’s mysterious disappearance garnered media attention. cases--Cassidy Rainwater’s mysterious disappearance garnered media attention.

The Disappearance of Kandi Green Gonzalez
1154
In well publicized missing persons cases, the police usually make it a point to let the public know that they are tirelessly working on bringing the victim home and bringing the perpetrator to justice. And that’s their job, no matter the circumstances, which is why it is so upsetting when it feels like they’re doing the exact opposite. After Kandi Green Gonzalez disappeared, it seems as if the very people who are supposed to be helping find the missing 36 year old from Kentucky were the ones slowing the investigation down. In the months since Kandi was thrown out of her home that she shared with the former Sheriff’s son, her family has met nothing but deadends and have conducted much of the investigation on their own. Are the police really doing all they can to find Kandi or is there more to this story than they are letting on?

The Murdaugh Family Murders
1658
After reading, or listening, to enough true crime, you might find the cases become somewhat formulaic. A person goes missing, a search party is sent out, a body is found, an arrest is ma de. Our case this week, though, is anything but that. Instead of inching closer to a solution, each new update only seems to generate more controversy and mystery around the Murdaugh Family.

The Jacob Wetterling Abduction
1518
In 1989, there were about 20,000 murders, but only 12,000 were solved. That’s only a 60% success rate, and that number hasn’t changed much in the last thirty years. You would think that with technology like DNA analysis and surveillance in more places, we’d be doing better. And of those unsolved crimes, few are solved years later. One of those 8000 unsolved cases in 1989 was the disappearance of Jacob Wetterling. Unlike so many others, this cold case did get a resolution, but it wasn’t until 27 years later. As a warning, this case references sexual abuse of children.

The Murder of Colleen Ritzer
1614
The gruesome murder of Colleen Ritzer in 2013 shocked everyone. Colleen was a young, well-loved math teacher in a small Massachusetts town, and her killer was a quiet, but seemingly kind, freshman soccer player. With no record, no prior offences, what made this young boy suddenly snap? The death of any person at the hands of a killer is always terrifying, but today’s case, which grapples with understanding how a 14 year old could suddenly murder his math teacher, is truly frightening.

The Wichita Massacre
1829
When it comes to true crime, one of the biggest names that people think of is BTK--a serial killer whose reign of terror over Wichita, Kansas lasted more than 15 years. But while BTK might be the most famous killer, for the people of Wichita, Reginald and Jonathan Carr’s week long crime and killing spree caused citizens to fear for their lives both while out and inside their own homes. In the 20 years since the Carr Brothers committed what is now dubbed the Wichita Horror or Wichita Massacre, they have filed multiple appeals, keeping their crimes in headlines in town and preventing closure for the families who lost so much.

This case made national headlines, and in 2021, Lisa Marie became the first woman to be executed by the federal government in decades. Our case this week follows a similar trajectory. Authorities quickly pieced together what appears to be a solid case against one of the victim’s acquaintances from work, and all signs pointed to murder. But, in the four years since Danielle Stislicki was last seen, her body has never been found and the prime suspect isn’t giving anything up. However, her family and the many local police departments involved have remained committed to seeking justice and finding answers. It seems now in 2021, they might get just that.

The Covina Massacre
1192
In more typical years than what we all experienced in 2020, the holiday seasons mean families are gathering, gifts are exchanged, and for some, it’s the most joyous time of the year. On Christmas Eve of 2008, Joseph “Papa Joe” Ortega and his wife Alicia, were hosting a festive holiday party for their children and grandchildren at their home in Covina, California. When they opened the front door that night, while the party was well underway, to a man wearing a Santa Claus costume and holding a large gift-wrapped package, they had no idea the devastation that would ensue when that man opened fire on the unsuspecting family.

The TikTok Suitcase Murders

It seems as if there is no shortage of trends and viral videos coming out of TikTok nowadays. From cute dog videos to skateboarders drinking cranberry juice to dance crazes, TikTok has it all. While most of what goes viral from the Gen Z app is simple, joyful, or comedic, the viral video that started this case is anything but. What began as a few teens having fun recording a video this summer, ended with a horrible, shocking discovery on a Seattle beach.

The case of: Vanessa Guillen
1215
To give you a little bit of background, Vanessa Guillen was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she lived with her mother, father, and five other siblings. She loved to run, play sports, particularly soccer, and was an avid weightlifter. Vanessa, like the rest of her family, was devoutly Catholic, and committed to her education, graduating in the top 15% of her high school class. According to Vanessa’s mom, she had talked about joining the military since she was 10 years old and when she graduated from high school Vanessa enlisted right away in the US Army. Like any mother, Gloria Guillen was worried for her daughter after she enlisted, but Vanessa was adamant and wanted to defend her country. Vanessa was particularly close with her older sister, Mayra who recently turned 22. Mayra flew out for Vanessa’s graduation from basic training, and supported her sister’s ambition to be in the army, even when their mother wasn’t quite so sure. Mayra remembers her sister telling their mother, who only speaks Spanish, about her choice to enlist: “Without a doubt, mami, it is the law of life.”
