Ep 182: Jordan
3509
This week were back to share the story of punk icon Jordan. Born Pamela Rooke, Jordan was always an original. Combining her passion for dance, music and fashion led her to Kings Road where she got a job working with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren at their iconic store SEX. It was there she sparked inspiration into everyone who entered, becoming muse to musicians, filmmakers and fashion designers alike. From starring in films such as Jubilee, to making onstage appearances with the Sex Pistols and Adam Ant, Jordan was at the epicentre of it all. Filmmaker Derek Jarman said it best... "As far as I was concerned Jordan was original. everyone else in the fashion side follows on from her. Even Vivienne and the shop because with Jordan the shop wouldn't have worked. She was the original Sex Pistol. everyone else came in and saw Jordan dressed up and the attitude and it took off from there. She was the godfather, godmother, if you like. She was the purest example of them all" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 179: Chan Parker
3316
This week we dive into the jazz era and give you the life story of Chan Parker. Since the day she was born Chan Parker always had a deep passion for music. With parents involved in the nightclub scene, Chan spent her early years seeing legends such as Rosetta Tharpe, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington perform at all the hot New York clubs. By the time she was 20 she was very well known and admired in the Jazz/Swing scene, and was lovingly dubbed "The Queen of Swing Street". While Chan had many musical admirers over the years it was saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker, who first captured her heart. Being an interracial couple in the 1940's wasn't easy and neither was life with Charlie. Bird suffered from mental illness which was exacerbated by his substance abuse issues. Chan did all she could for Charlie before his passing at age 34. Following Charlie Chan fell for yet another saxophonist, Phil Woods, who she would go on to marry. Listen to hear Chans story. Ep: 174: Grace Jones
3750
This week Chanty returns to hear the story behind Grace Jones' life and career. Growing up in Jamaica wasn't easy for Grace. Raised by her extremely strict and religious relatives, it wasn't until she was a teenager and moved to America to be with her parents that she began to see a world of possibility. With her incredibly striking looks and a strong ambition to make a career for herself, it was natural that Grace would enter the world of modelling. It didn't take long though for Grace's passion for music and art to take center stage. After being signed by Island Records and finding a perfect collaborative partner in Jean-Paul Goude, Grace took the world by storm, mixing music, fashion and art into eye catching and shocking performative pieces. She would go on to release 9 albums, tour the world, and make her way onto movie screens in just the first decade of her career. Grace truly is a walking piece of art. Ep 173: Backstage Pass with DeeDee Keel
4897
This week I am joined once again by the magnificent DeeDee Keel as she shares some never before stories from her days working at the Whisky a Go Go! DeeDee Keel is a rock and roll woman with a Heart of Gold! We first had the great pleasure of chatting with DeeDee back in Episode 124 where she shared stories about growing up in Venice Beach down the street from The Doors, scoring a primo gig at the Whisky a Go Go where she worked for the next 12 years, what it was like to be a part of the Led Zeppelin crew, her personal groupie tricks and touring experiences with her then husband Ron Keel. Every time I have the pleasure of talking with DeeDee she blows me away with another story from her incredible past. When I asked her to return for a second episode she came prepared with some extremely fun, never before heard stories from her time on the Sunset Strip. DeeDee talks about fond memories at the Riot House and Sunset Plaza, going full circle with Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice and Blue Cheer's Leigh Stephens, her relationship with guitarist Sam Mitchell, and a not so friendly encounter involving Mott the Hoople frontman Ian Hunter. Oh, and what sexy guitarist did DeeDee save from drowning? Tune in to find out! Ep 172: Patti Johnsen Part 2
4092
This week I am joined once again by the magnetic Patti Johnsen in a discussion on what being a true groupie means. You may remember our previous interview with Patti Johnsen, alumni of the Rainbow Bar & Grill as well as the creator of the Groupie Round Table, or perhaps you remember her name from the fabulous chapter she has in Pamela Des Barres book Let's Spend the Night Together. We previously discussed her time touring with Van Halen, meeting George Harrison, her decade long job at the Rainbow, the formation of the Groupie Round Table and rock n roll "Holy Grails". This time around Patti and I discuss the term groupie, what it means to us and it's misconceptions. We also discuss rock n roll decadence, "Almost Famous" tour moments, her incredible friendship with Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, and what it's like to wake up next to Billy Idol! Patti is one of a kind, she is naturally beautiful inside and out and has the truest groupie soul. It's always such a pleasure to talk to a true groupie sister and I'm so happy she came on again to share more from her incredible past. Patti is also the speaker of one of my favourite interview quotes...."Just because you haven’t fucked a rockstar doesn’t mean you’re not a groupie. A guitar, a Les Paul comes off the assembly line, it hasn’t been played yet. Does it mean it’s not a guitar? Of course it is! And you put that in the hands of a rockstar, you just wait to hear that fucker sing! You are still a groupie because once you get in the hands of a rockstar baby, wait to hear you sing.” If you haven't listened previously, you can listen to our first discussion back in Episode 108. You can also check out our 20 Questions blog post with Patti! Ep 170: Cherry Vanilla
3835
This week we discuss the exciting life and career of Cherry Vanilla. Cherry Vanilla has certainly lived life to the fullest. At just 19 she was one of the first, and certainly youngest women managing major clients at an ad agency (Think Mad Men!) while also breaking barriers as the first female DJ in the NYC nightclub scene. After watching the documentary Groupies Cherry had "At last had a name and a vision for the role I'd been dying to play for so long, along with an awareness of a sisterhood of like-minded role models.” Cherry wasn't just a part of the music scene though, she also participated in the "Theatre of the Ridiculous" working with people like Jayne County and many regulars from the Warhol factory scene. In 1971 she starred in Andy Warhol's London production of Pork. It was while there that she met David Bowie, who had yet to break onto the American charts. When Bowie and his manager Tony Defries were looking to establish a New York office for his company Mainman they knew exactly who to call. All Cherry's previous work experience made her the perfect woman for the job. She would become Bowie's main PR spokesperson and later move up to VP of their audio/visual division, helping to solidify his place as a rock n roll icon.If all that weren't enough, by the end of the 70's Cherry would hit the stage herself, becoming immersed in the new punk scene and releasing 2 albums herself. Cherry's incredible passion for life, love and music is inspiring and after checking out the episode make sure you also purchase her fantastic memoir, Lick Me, where ever you buy your books! Ep 161: Linda McCartney
4339
This week we discuss the life and career of Linda McCartney along with her relationship with Paul. Daughter of showbiz attorney Lee Eastman, Linda grew up with deep respect and fascination for the arts. By her late teens an interest in photography led her to New York City where she began her career shooting all the most respected musicians of the 60's. Linda's naturally gifted eye and her ability to connect to her subjects made her a favourite of anyone she happened to shoot and made her photographs some of the most intimate portraits you can find. When Linda first met Paul McCartney she knew she'd found the one. The pair would marry within 22 months, just as The Beatles were coming to an end. What should have been a time of celebration was instead marred by Paul's depression as well as the fan and media scrutiny over their marriage. Linda became Paul's support through this time and through their love he found another collaborative partnership. While Linda never aspired to be a musician, Paul wanted her by his side and over the next decade they would perform together as Wings. If they had thought that the scrutiny over their marriage was rough, they had no idea how bad it would get, from their own friends nonetheless, when Linda joined the band. Through it all they remained together growing stronger as the years progressed. By the 80's Linda had found a newfound passion for Animal Rights and helping to spread the word about vegetarianism. Linda would put out multiple vegetarian cookbooks as well as her own incredibly successful meatless frozen foods line. She is considered to be one of the leading activists to publicly bring attention to animal rights and initiate change before she succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 56. This week Lynx shares the story of Swedish actress Britt Ekland. This week we discuss the life, loves and career of Swedish beauty Britt Ekland. Beginning her acting career while still a teen, it didn't take long before the world took notice. Britt was just 21 when she married a 38 year old Peter Sellers after a 10 day whirlwind romance. During their 4 year marriage they worked on multiple films together, had one daughter and experienced some incredible highs and lows. In the 60's and 70's Britt would star in many cult classics including The Wicker Man, Get Carter and was even a Bond girl in The Man with the Golden Arm. Britt would also go on to date Warren Beatty, Lou Adler, Rod Stewart and marry drummer Slim Jim Phantom. While with Stewart Britt was not only an inspiration for his songs but also a motivator to build his solo career. Rod said “Sometimes... I wonder why Britt's not my manager. She's so aware of the business I’m in and I've never had a partner like that before. Britt came along and said I was wasting my talent she gave me a kick in the ass.” Britt is still incredibly active, starring in many reality tv shows over the last decade and is active on social media. EP 142: Rosa Lee Brooks and Gregg Wright
4651
Today we’ve come together for a very special occasion, and that’s to have a conversation with Rosa Lee Brooks and Gregg Wright to recognize what would have been Jimi Hendrix's 78th Birthday. On November 27th, Kiss The Sky will be playing an upcoming live-stream to honour Jimi Hendrix's birthday that will air on Facebook and other platforms. Rosa Lee Brooks locked eyes with Jimi Hendrix on New Years in 1963 and it was love at first sight. Cosmically connected, the two went on to write and record My Diary and Utee together forming both a romantic and musical partnership. Rosa began singing at the age of two and thankfully, hasn’t stopped. Mentored by Etta James, she brought everything full circle later on when she’d invite musicians into her home and inspire them.  We were so happy to have Gregg Wright join us in the studio for this conversation and some music. He really is King of the Rockin' Blues, and we can’t wait for his new album, Big Dawg Barkin, to be released early in 2021. We are so grateful to Rosa and Gregg for this conversation. You can find Rosa on facebook and at rosaleebrooks.com Find Gregg online, greggwright.com and that’s Gregg with two G’s. Don’t forget to follow Jimy Bleu and Kiss the Sky and tune in on November 27th to see the band perform live on stream, in all their Jimi Hendrix glory. Enjoy the show!  On Friday November 27th from 7pm to 8:30pm Eastern Standard Time, Kiss The Sky presents a live stream of their annual Jimi Hendrix Birthday Bash direct from the historic Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY. Ever since Ronnie was a baby, she was singing for people on the subway. Growing up in a musical household, Ronnie would perform with her sister, cousins, aunts and uncles every weekend. Ronnie knew that show business was her destiny, and that music was the only thing she ever wanted to do. Ronnie, her sister Estelle and their cousin Nedra formed the Ronnettes and performing in New York, and perfecting their live show until they knew it was time that the Ronnettes had to make a record. EP 132: Sharon Osbourne
4580
While some may think it was Ozzy who introduced Sharon to the world of rock n roll truth is she was partying with the animals long before the Prince of Darkness entered the picture. Daughter of infamous music manager turned gangster Don Arden, Sharon entered the family business as a teen and soon became her fathers right hand man helping to manage bands such as ELO and Black Sabbath. When Sabbath fired frontman Ozzy Osbourne for his drug and alcohol addiction, Sharon stood by his side and took over his management, helping to build one of the most successful solo careers of all-time while also falling deeply in love. While they're love affair has stood the test of time it was certainly not always smooth sailing. Years of addiction and extremely violent behaviour marred their private life, but the pair always managed to pull through the worst of it and will be celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary this summer. Whether you love them or hate them one thing is for sure, Sharon and Ozzy are pure rock n roll. Make sure to purchase your copy of Sharon Osbourne's memoir Extreme where ever books are sold. EP 125: Interview with Ginger Gilmour
5048
Today, we bring you our conversation with Ginger Gilmour, a true artist and author of Memoirs of the Bright Side of the Moon. We read Ginger’s book and discussed it back in episode 56 and since then, we have been wanting to speak with her personally. Today is the day! Ginger met David Gilmour of Pink Floyd in 1971. They were married from 1975 until 1990 and have four children together. But like all of the incredible women we speak with, Ginger is multifaceted. Not only is she an author, she is a sculptor, light worker, mentor and will be hosting Creativity Classes “where creativity touches the heart and nourishes the spirit”. If you’re one of the lucky few to take classes with Ginger, you may be painting or sculpting but you'll most certainly be in the presence of this really peaceful and spiritual being. Ginger is a true storyteller and speaks about her experience on tour with Pink Floyd, her health journey, favourite places she has travelled and what it was like spending time with George and Olivia Harrison in their gardens at Friar Park. Ginger welcomes anyone to reach out and ask her questions. One way of doing that is by sending her an email, enquiries@gingerart.net You can also leave her comments on her Facebook profile: https://www.facebook.com/gingergilmourbook/ or https://www.facebook.com/GingerGilmour.GingerArt/ In the meantime, you can find Ginger on her website www.gingerart.net and we highly recommend that you pick up a copy of her book Memoirs of the Bright Side of the Moon. Today we chat with DeeDee Keel, a true rock and roll fan and proud Groupie. No wonder the rock and roll lifestyle chose DeeDee, growing up in Venice Beach, she had Jim Morrison as a neighbour! What did DeeDee's dad say to warn her about Jimmy? Did she listen? DeeDee recalls many incredible stories growing up on the Sunset Strip as well as her experiences working at the Whisky A Go Go between the years of 1971 and 1983! How can you NOT collect wonderful memories working at this place at the height of rock excellence? She was a part of the Led Zeppelin crew, and had her own unique ways of "bagging the rock star". DeeDee also has experience going on tour with her husband, Ron Keel and tells us: Is it really all it's cracked up to be? What did she like about the touring life and what is she happy to have left behind? DeeDee is still rockin', you can hear her on her monthly radio show as the Rock Zone Reporter for WDLJ- KM Radio 97.5FM The Rock! Ep 123: Rita and Bob Marley
4521
This week we take you to Kingston, Jamaica where Bob and Rita met and fell in love. Rita was still just a teen when she met The Wailing Wailers and began doing backing vocals for them. At the studio she began to get close to one member in particular, Robert, better known as Bob Marley. Their affection for each other grew fast and strong and before long the young couple were married. From the get go Rita looked at her marriage as a partnership. Rita was there with Bob through years of struggle, yet their love for one another and their dreams of making it big never faltered. When Bob did finally reach success Rita was alongside with him, touring for 7 years with her backing band, the I-Three. While over the years their relationship would shift from that of lovers to great friends, Rita would be there for Bob until the very end and continues to maintain his legacy. Ep 122: Heart
4540
Let’s kick it out and begin 2020 with the story of Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. We’ll take you through over 4 decades of astonishing talent, hard work, love, loss and sisterhood. Chanty read the memoir "Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock and Roll" by Ann and Nancy Wilson and presents it to you today! Ann and Nancy Wilson, only 4 years apart in age, were always close. Moving from city to city and country to country with their family brought them even closer, singing and playing guitar together wherever they went. The sisters found security, and a home in listening to the radio and playing music. When Beatlemania hit, Ann and Nancy didn’t want to be a Beatles wife like the rest of their friends, they wanted to BE the Beatles.  Ann Wilson never had any doubt that she wanted to play music for a living, and things really started to take a turn in her career when she met the Magic Man and moved to Vancouver. Eventually, Nancy left college to join her big sister, and the rest is… rock and roll history! Listen to this week’s episode to hear about all of the Barracudas of the music industry, who else inspired Heart’s songs and lyrics and what being a pioneer in rock was like for two sisters from Seattle.  If you would like to support our show, you can head over to Patreon and donate $5 a month for bonus content https://www.patreon.com/musespodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 120: Audrey and Hank Williams
4043
This week we travel back in time to the 1940's & '50's where Hank Williams shook the world with a new sound dubbed 'Hillbilly Rock' Hank may have had an incredible voice and song-writing skills like no other, but without the strong willed women who surrounded him the world may never have known. As a child it was his momager Lillie Stone pushing him to be all he could until he met the love of his life and muse for all of his songs, Audrey Mae Sheppard in 1943. With Audrey by his side Hanks career skyrocketed. She booked the interviews, tours, created his rockabilly image, was involved in (and came up with the ideas for) all of Hanks business proposals and even joined the band onstage now and again. As Audrey once said "He was lucky with a God-given talent, and I was lucky with a few brains." Career wise things couldn't have been better but behind the scenes things weren't as rosy. An alcoholic since he was just an early teen, Hanks addiction, and the mood swings that came from it had the couple in constant turmoil. Life certainly wasn't easy, but it did make for great songwriting material. Research for this episode came from the book Still in Love with You: The Story of Hank and Audrey Williams by Dale Vinicur and Lycretia Williams (their daughter!). Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 118: Carly Simon: Boys in the Trees- A Memoir
4042
This week, Chanty brings you the story of Carly Simon, based on her memoir "Boys In The Trees". Carly grew up in a seemingly idyllic setting, with her family splitting their time between Greenwich Village and Martha's Vineyard and having Wednesday night sing-alongs around the piano. All was not as it seems, however, as the Simon family was one full of trauma and tragedy. Carly's upbringing inspired her songwriting that explores issues of love, crime, secrecy, vulnerability, monsters, beasts, love and longing. In this episode, you'll also learn about some of Carly's muses (expected and unexpected!), steamy relationships (ahem, Cat Stevens!) and what exactly went on between her and Mick Jagger. Ep 116: Interview with Lydia Criss
4100
In this week's episode, we chat with Lydia Criss, author of the book, Sealed with a Kiss. Lydia is the first wife of Peter Criss of KISS, ever heard of them? We had a great time chatting with Lydia about meeting Peter when he was Peter Criscuola, how their young love blossomed and being a part of the phenomenon that would become KISS. Lydia was there at the very beginning, supporting Peter while he pursued his dreams of rock and roll stardom.  Lydia tells us about how Peter created the cat man character which was inspired by their pet cat which they shared together. Lydia’s memoir is also like a wonderful scrapbook, documenting home photos of their life, relationship as well as the band’s evolving look. What was it like hanging around with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley? It's all here! We also discuss the part she played in the creation of the song “Beth”, what it was like to witness KISS become one of the biggest bands in the world, travel the world, rub shoulders with celebrities, lose herself in that relationship, and find herself once again. Ep 113: Olivia Harrison
3730
“Olivia really kicked ass. She is a beautiful person. His son, Dhani, is a beautiful kid, man. I’ve seen him recently. He is doing very well — very strong and inspired. Olivia had the hardest job in the world, because she loved George more than all of us, and she really took care of him and cleared the path in front of him, behind him, and inherited that crazy life, you know.“ - Tom Petty Today’s episode is all about Olivia Harrison. Olivia Trinidad Arias met George Harrison after beginning a flirtation over the phone while she was working at his company A&M records. For George, the connection was immediate and would go on to last until the end of his life, and beyond. Olivia never meant to marry someone famous, let alone a Beatle, but her grounded nature and shared passion for meditation as well as a similar sense of humour to George made her a perfect match. Tune in to hear all about this inspiring love story born out of a chaotic period in George’s personal life; a romance that turned into a divine union lasting far beyond the confines of this astral plane. Learn about the woman who inspired so many of George’s songs such as, Dark Sweet Lady and This is Love, and who was by his side while he tended to his many gardens and as he left this world. Patti recounts some awesome stories about meeting George Harrison, working at the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill for nearly a decade, her fling with Billy Idol and her lasting friendship with Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. She also teaches us about rock n roll Holy Grails, her groupie round table and has some incredibly wise words for all us groupies out there, whether or not we have bedded a rockstar. “Just because you haven’t fucked a rockstar doesn’t mean you’re not a groupie. A guitar, a Les Paul comes off the assembly line, it hasn’t been played yet. Does it mean it’s not a guitar? Of course it is! And you put that in the hands of a rockstar, you just wait to hear that fucker sing! You are still a groupie because once you get in the hands of a rockstar baby, wait to hear you sing.” Make sure to follow Patti on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/pattijohnsen/ & Twitter at https://twitter.com/PattiJohnsen and check out the Groupie Round Table on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groupieroundtable For $20 off go to www.storyworth.com/muses when you subscribe! Ep 107: Interview with Rita Rae Roxx
4758
Way back in episode 64 Chanty told Lynx all about Rita Rae Roxx and her incredibly fun memoir Once Upon a Rock Star: Backstage Passes in the Heavy Metal Eighties – Big Hair, Bad Boys (and One Bad Girl). This time around we couldn't have been more excited to chat with Rockin' Rita herself! A friend wrote in Rita’s 1982 high school yearbook: “I hope that someday you will meet your true David Lee Roth … and become a rock and roll queen.” Well, she DID and she IS. Rita's extensive scrapbooks of backstage passes and personal photos are a record of a lifestyle that rock fans only dream about. After leaving Omaha and moving to LA, Rita pursued heavy metal bands throughout the 1980s and well into the 90s. She eventually traded rock stars for movie stars and did a stint in a stand-up comedy. After leaving LA with more memories than any single person could ever experience, Rita returned to her hometown and is a hard-working mom who is active in her church. RIta still goes to shows and supports bands in her community, and you can hear all about it in today's show!  Make sure to check out Rita's websitehttp://www.onceuponarockstarbook.com/ & follow her adventures on Instagram and Twitter @RitaRaeRoxx Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 105: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen
4582
“They were two lost souls who had found each other, Their relationship came out of their inability to find what they wanted in the outside world. They were on the same wavelength. They fit each others needs. They were dependant on each other. They cared for each other. To them, what they had together was genuine love.” - Deborah Spungen In this episode we shine a light on the iconic punk duo Sid and Nancy. A lot has been said about the pair over the years, and while researching for this episode we were shocked at how negative the media has painted Nancy who at heart was a troubled, very young woman. In this episode you'll hear all about their lives pre-punk, how they came together and how their equally self-destructive behaviour would be their downfall. Using both Deborah Spungen's book And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mothers Story of her Daughters Murder and Malcolm Butt's biography Sid Vicious: Rock n Roll Star, you'll hear a different side to Nancy and discover why Lynx dubbed her "The Yoko Ono of Punk". Make sure you pick up Deborah's book for an even more in depth look at Nancy! For 30% off your first Care/Of order go to www.TakeCareOf.com and use the Promo Code MUSES30! Ep. 103: Laurel Canyon
3401
On this week’s episode, Chanty takes you back to a time when eucalyptus trees hung in front yards, people went cabin to cabin playing each other their new music, and musicians would gather at the store to smoke on the wall, have a chat and see where the night took them. We’re going to LAUREL CANYON. Using Michael Walker’s book Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll’s Legendary Neighborhood, Chanty tells Lynx about this neighbourhood that inspired some of the biggest artists of our time. How can a place in time be a Muse? In a Muses first, we discuss how a time and place in rock and roll history could be the inspiration behind bands getting together (hello, Crosby, Stills and Nash), how relationships were formed and how this musical oasis turned darker as the generations passed. Today you’ll hear about Frank Zappa’s log cabin, Chris Hillman arriving at the Canyon, Josh Tillman mistaking it for Topanga Canyon and so much more. Have you ever wondered what Joni Mitchell’s house looked like back in the 60s? We’ve got you covered! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep. 101: Tara Browne
4525
This week we bring you the life story of Guinness heir turned ’60’s muse Tara Browne. Born into Irish aristocracy, Tara’s upbringing was anything but normal. Surrounded by some of the worlds most famous writers, artists, and politicians, Tara spent his childhood absorbing culture and learning by experience. By 14, Tara was already influencing those around him, always ahead of everyone else when it came to music, fashion and fast cars. When Tara moved to London he became a central figure in the Swinging London scene, bringing people like Paul McCartney, Brian Jones, Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg together with fellow socialites, muses and influencers. “He was the living, breathing quintessence of Swinging London, a dandy with the air of a young prince. The hippest of hip cats, he always seemed to be right on the heartbeat of the moment in everything he did, whether introducing Paul McCartney to the mind-expanding possibilities of LSD in his Mayfair flat, turning heads in his psychedelically coloured AC Cobra or gadding about Londons West End with a Beatle or Rolling Stone, or perhaps Peter Sellers or Roman Polanski by his side.” Tara’s life would be a short one, but his influence on the 60’s and those around him would shape the culture forever. Make sure to check out Paul Howard’s biography on Tara, I Read the News Today Oh Boy: The Short and Gilded Life of Tara Browne, the Man Who Inspired The Beatles’ Greatest Song. Ep. 100: Evelyn McDonnell: Women Who Rock Interview
3130
The Muses celebrate episode 100 by getting to know writer Evelyn McDonnell and discussing her latest book, Women Who Rock: Bessie to Beyonce, Girl Groups to Riot Grrrl! Women Who Rock features over 100 amazing artists and is written by a collective of incredible women. If that weren’t enough, each artist gets their own gorgeous illustration, all created by extremely talented female artists. One of our favourite additions to the book was a playlist suggestion to go along with each chapter. We read, we listened, we learned about old favourites and discovered new artists that are now in rotation on our own playlists. We simply cannot recommend this book enough and it was such a pleasure to discuss Evelyn’s impressive career with her. Oh and from this book has spawned a new activist collective called Turn it Up! which advocates for gender parity in the music industry including airplay, media coverage and employment. How kick ass is that?? You can purchase Women Who Rock on Amazon or where ever books are sold! Ep. 99: Dolly Parton - The Early Years
4206
We all know her, we all love her and there is no one else like her. Who could we possibly be talking about? That’s right, Dolly Parton! Today Chanty presents the story of Dolly Parton, the early years. With the help of Dolly’s book “Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business”, you can hear the story of how Dolly got to be the super star she is today. A small town girl from the smoky mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly was one of twelve children born in a home no bigger than a shack. A real rags to riches story, Chanty explains how Dolly discovered God, Music and Sex (not necessarily in those orders) and in turn discovered and became the best Dolly she could be. A story of faith, believing in yourself and dreaming big, this is a fun an inspirational episode that might have you saying “I didn’t know that!” We also cover Dolly’s longtime marriage to Carl Thomas Dean, a handsome young man she met after moving to Nashville. The couple have been married for over 50 years and are still going strong. What makes this marriage everlasting? You’ll have to listen to find out! This month, Dolly will be honoured as the Person of the Year by MusicCares for her humanitarian work. She also celebrated a birthday last month, so Happy 73rd Birthday Dolly Parton! She has probed the minds of legends such as Eric Clapton, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Ravi Shankar and many more; delving into the drive to create; the importance of nurturing creativity; the role of unconscious influences and the effects of chemicals and drugs on the creative process. Ep. 96: Interview with Jon Scott
4634
“We would not be listening to Tom Petty on the radio had it not been for you Jon Scott” – Mark Felsot Sirius/XM Host and ProducerTom Petty Radio Channel 31 It’s our last episode of 2018! And what a way to end they year. In today’s episode, we speak to Jon Scott, author of Tom Petty and Me: My Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventures with Tom Petty. When Chanty received the e-mail about interviewing Jon, she couldn’t believe her good fortune. Being one of the biggest Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fans out there, this is a dream interview. To speak with someone who played such a vital role in getting the Heartbreaker’s music out the public was special- but Jon Scott- is special. Jon was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and was inspired to become a DJ because of his mothers’ love of music and requesting songs on the radio. From there, he went to work for RCA as a promo man. A promo person really does it all. When he moved to ABC records, he met Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and so began a 40 year long friendship. Jon tells recalls stories that are in the book (make sure you pick up a copy) and also tells the girls things that are not- so this is an episode not to be missed. Jon was so integral to Tom’s career, that Tom did a very rare thing- giving him a shout out at his last concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Jon Scott is the real deal. Enjoy the show! Ep 95: Poison Ivy and Lux Interior: The Story of The Cramps
3783
When hearing the story of Lux Interior and Poison Ivy! Rorschach one thing is abundantly clear – these two we’re destined to be with one another. While both were attending Sacramento State in the early 70’s it was a chance encounter off campus that led to their introduction. As Ivy said “I was a teenage hitchhiker and he gave me a ride. He’s been giving me a ride ever since.” Within a fortnight the pair had shacked up and their equal passion for rock n roll became their life. Discovering old 50’s rockabilly sounds that seemed to be long forgotten, the pair knew it was their mission to bring back the gritty side of rock n roll. They packed up, moved to NYC and formed a band, The Cramps. While managers, labels and bandmates would come and go, Lux and Ivy’s passion and determination were relentless. Ivy would act as manager, muse AND lead guitarist for the majority of the bands 30+ year career. They would perform over a thousand live shows, tour around the world and release 8 studio albums, their career only ending due to an unexpected death. For those wanting to learn even more check out the FANTASTIC book Journey to the Center of The Cramps by Dick Porter for more fun stories and facts on not only The Cramps fanpage but those who both played with and influenced them. Ep. 93: Pamela Des Barres: The Interview!
3448
Today we present you with our long awaited, highly anticipated interview with Pamela Des Barres A woman who really needs no introduction- but we’ll give you one anyway. This woman is a legend. She is the author of 5 books, and maybe you’ve heard of her work? I’m with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie? This woman is such a rock star in her on right that when we were out vintage shopping with her today, she was recognized and called out as royalty. And she really is that- rock royalty. Pamela first got her start back in the 60s as she was mentored by Frank Zappa, she was in the all girls experimental band the GTOs. She is a best selling author and now writes for Please Kill Me. Pamela is one of the rare few that has been there and done that with biggest rock gods of our time. We’re talking Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, Keith Moon, Jim Morrison and the list goes on. But beyond her sexy fun filled life and adventures, Pamela is a shining, guiding light in the world. She facilitates writing workshops all over the US, Canada and England, bringing women and people together to unleash their inner muse and tap in to their own creativity. EP 91: Interview with Dorothy Carvello
3490
When we read Dorothy Carvello‘s memoir Anything for a Hit: An A&R Woman’s Story of Surviving the Music Industry we were blown away. Dorothy had a life-long dream of working in the music industry and when the opportunity arose to work for Atlantic Records President Ahmet Ertegün, Dorothy jumped at the chance. Almost immediately she would discover this was no regular workplace. As Dorothy put it “If personnel had actually enforced the rules, everyone in the building would have been fired by lunch.” With Dorothy’s dream job came amazing highs and very low lows. Sexual harassment and rampant drug use were all common daily occurrences and Dorothy battled constant misogyny with every step. Nevertheless she excelled, working her way up from Ahmet’s secretary to Atlantic Records first female A&R Executive. Dorothy loved going to live shows and the thrill of discovering and nurturing untapped talent but the constant abuse, both mental and physical from her male co-workers certainly took it’s toll. Dorothy would fight back and to this day continues to do so. We recently had a riveting conversation with Dorothy about how she pushed past the societal expectations she was raised with and how she built her career in the music industry. We also discussed her very unique friendship with Ahmet and couldn’t help but ask about the beautiful man named Michael Hutchence who was a shining example of what a man could be among the toxic masculinity. We talk about how we need to continue to push forward with #TimesUp and #MeToo because the battle isn’t over but thankfully there are women like Dorothy who are putting these stories forward and fighting back. Everyone needs to pick up a copy of this book immediately! You can find Dorothy on Twitter @dorothycarvello and Instagram @dcarvello and her memoir where ever books are sold. Ep 90: Interview with Kristin Casey
6180
Today’s guest is Kristin Casey, author of the book Rock Monster: My Life with Joe Walsh as well as a surrogate partner and intimacy coach. Yep, we said Joe Walsh, a wildly (emphasis on wildly) talented musician and songwriter in his own right as well as a member of Eagles and Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band, just to name a few. We spoke with Kristin about her serious long term relationship with Joe Walsh, but as is the muses tradition, we get into so much more with our muse du jour. We talk about the spiritual connection between the Muse and Musician, our mutual love of Miss P- Pamela Des Barres, understanding the male psyche, objectification that’s consensual and the importance of nurturing female sexuality. We also get into what it was like to spend quality time with a Beatles, her crazy bond with Levon Helm, the writing process of her book and her journey into the profession of surrogate partner and intimacy coach. We had so much fun with Kristin and definitely believe that she is one of soul sisters. We hope that you get just as much out of this as we did. Enjoy the show. In August we had the great pleasure of heading down to Memphis and doing a tour of The Legendary Sun Studio. With Elvis acting as our guardian angel, that tour turned into a late night, after hours recording session with Daniel Hall and Ples Hampton. Daniel and Ples were the most amazing hosts AND guests, making us feel welcome and sharing their insight and knowledge on Sun Records history, amazing women such as Marion Keisker and Barbara Pitman who greatly contributed to Sun Studios past and about the first all female radio station Sam Phillips created in the 1950’s. They also share some personal stories about what it’s like to work at Sun Studio, the magic of recording there and recommend some great local emerging artists. You’ll also get to hear the story of how our podcast Muses and Stuff was born! After the miss were off the fun kept going, the magic continued and you’ll be able to see some of the adventure when we release our travel video! EP 87: Erin Everly, Stephanie Seymour & The Rocket Queen
4377
Axl Rose and his band Guns N' Roses may have been a well known name on Sunset Strip but the band had yet to cut a full length record when he met model Erin Everly. The two became inseparable however right from the start friends could see it wasn’t the healthiest relationship. Their time together would inspire many of Guns n Roses most well known songs, but the volatile nature of their relationship would overcome any good that was there. After their split Axl would meet another model, Stephanie Seymour and repeat past behaviours. Stephanie would also serve as a muse, starring in two of GNR’s most famous videos, “November Rain” and “Don’t Cry”, but their time together would be short lived and lead to an onslaught on court battles for Rose. Then there’s the Rocket Queen(s). Barbie Von Grief was a wild child who would inspire the entire band early in their career. Her continual support as a friend would encourage them to chase their dreams no matter how tough times got. She co-wrote a song that would later only be dedicated to her – Rocket Queen- but it was another woman, Adriana Smith, who would be featured in the song in quite a unique way. Listen to learn more! EP 84: Grace Slick
4405
Grace Slick always knew she wasn’t meant for a more “conventional” lifestyle, but it wasn’t until she began seeing live music and started her own band that she finally felt she’d found her destiny. When her bandmates in The Great Society decided to find their own path, Grace was asked to join her friends in the already popular Jefferson Airplane (& later Jefferson Starship). Grace was well known for her outspoken and badass ways onstage, and audiences loved them. Their music filled the airwaves from the ’60’s – ’80’s (and then some!) and their presence at 3 of the biggest and most notorious music festivals (Monterey International Pop Festival, Woodstock and Altamont) solidified their place in music history. It was a wild ride and Grace embraced all that the 60’s has come to be known for, free love (wait until you hear her Jim Morrison story!), drugs and a whole lotta rock n roll! When Cynthia first met John Lennon he was an 18 year old teddy boy more interested in being class clown and playing his guitar then focusing on school work. Both students at the Liverpool College of Art, Cynthia soon found herself looking forward to seeing him, laughing at John’s sharp wit and swooning when he’d play a tune or two after classes. It wasn’t long before they became a couple, but right from the start Cynthia realized life with John would never be simple. “He wanted me with him for as much of the time as possible which meant that very early in our relationship I had to choose between him and my other needs and responsibilities.” Cynthia chose to put John first even with all that meant. Within 5 years they would marry, Julian would be born and Beatlemania would become a worldwide phenomenon. While fame and fortune opened many doors it also came with a significant price. Fans of The Beatles were now camping outside their home, the press followed them everywhere they went and the loneliness of having John away most of the year was difficult for Cynthia. Even when they were together, attending swanky events and partying with all the hottest celebrities Cynthia could never shake the feeling that she didn’t belong. When John discovered psychedelic drugs, Cynthia began to feel an even greater distance growing between them. Cynthia also had increasing suspicions about John’s fidelity, especially after catching him lying about his relationship with an artist named Yoko Ono. John would continually deny he had any sort of contact with her, so you can imagine Cynthia’s shock upon returning home one day to find them lounging in bathrobes together. “I could feel a wall around them that I could not penetrate. In my worst nightmares about Yoko I had not imagined anything like this. Their intimacy had been so powerful I had felt like a stranger in my own house.” Tune in to hear Cynthia’s story and make sure to check out her memoir, John. EP 76: Astrid Kirchherr and Stuart Sutcliffe
3951
When Astrid Kirchherr and her friend Klaus Voormann came across The Beatles playing deep within Hamburgs red light district they were gobsmacked – rock n roll simply did not exist in Germany in 1960. Soon they began attending shows every night and Astrid, a gifted photographer, got the idea to shoot the band. With Klaus’ help translating, soon The Beatles were their fast friends and subjects of Astrid’s latest photo sessions- their first official publicity photos. While she connected with all of them, none so much as as the mysterious heartthrob of the group, Stuart Sutcliffe. Wait a minute! There’s no Stuart in The Beatles! Well, in their inception there was, and in no time they were inseparable. Like Astrid, Stuart’s talents lie in his art and together their work flourished. Astrid was his muse, but also highly influential in The Beatles early career. In this episode you’ll hear both Stuart and Astrid’s story, along with The Beatles pre-world domination. You can find Astrid’s incredible work here: http://www.artnet.com/artists/astrid-kirchherr/ & Stuart’s at Stuart Sutcliffe Art and Paintings – The Official Estate Learn more about your ad choices. EP 74: Vivian Cash
4678
She was the world’s “first lady of country music” and it’s time that she tells her story. Today Chanty presents you the life of Vivian Cash. “The truth is, I have only recently begun to feel the grace and reconciliation of making sense of what happened to our marriage. And now, with Johnny’s blessing, I would finally have what I longed to have for so many years in his shadow: a voice of my own to tell the world the truth”.  First, Chanty talks about a few podcasts she’s listening to right now including The Blume Saloon whose killer tunes actually inspired the girls this week to add in a little music. You might be shocked at how many Blume Saloon episodes she has binged in the last few weeks. We also discuss the new podcast Single AF hosted by Sharise Lee Ann Neil and Donna D'Errico. If those names sound familiar, it could be because you know them from the TV show “Ex wives of Rock”. They talk about dating in 2018… and it’s hilarious. If you don’t already know much about Vivian Cash, you may have gotten some information from her portrayal in the 2005 movie Walk the Line. You may recall that she was not painted in a positive light whatsoever, but rather as the unsupportive, nagging wife serving only as a foil for June. This could not have been farther from the truth. We discuss her memoir “I Walked The Line: My Life with Johnny” where she finally gets to share her side of the story. With Johnny’s blessing and encouragement, Viv wrote her memoir which includes the time she met Johnny Cash, their marriage, their divorce and all of the letters Johnny to wrote her when he was stationed in Germany. She was emotionally, physically and spiritually destroyed throughout Johnny’s battle with drugs, alcohol and infidelity but found reconciliation, forgiveness, and finally peace throughout her life and writing process. We talk about their beautiful story of young love, and hope that we did Vivian justice in spreading the message of her legacy. She was a devoted wife, mother and Christian who loved animals and her community. We think you’re going to really like this one! EP 72: Edie Sedgwick
5741
This week Lynx presents the story of Edie Sedgwick! We love bringing you interviews but we are SO HAPPY to get back to storytelling! “She was a catalyst. By being in contact with her, the edges were sharper. An evening with Edie would only end when Edie had got to the point of exhaustion, which would be at the end of 2 or 3 days. There’s that old Yogi axiom: the higher you go, the further you fall. We all know that. She liked walking very close to extinction, always.” Adored by all those around, her Edie got her first real taste of freedom and fame when she left the oppressive home environment with her father at the helm. Within a year she had conquered the Harvard/Cambridge scene and set her sights for something bigger, New York City. Word travels fast and within a couple months Edie was Manhattan’s new “It Girl” with people like Bob Dylan, Bob Neuwirth and Lester Persky knocking on her door. In March of 1965 Edie was introduced to Andy Warhol who knew a star when he saw one and together they became a sensation. In a mere 6 months Edie had starred in multiple Warhol productions, traveled to Europe with him to promote their films and was being mobbed at art galleries by adoring fans. The press had dubbed her “Girl of the Year” and there seemed to be no limit to the possibilities that lie ahead. But Edie’s mind was elsewhere, mourning the deaths of two of her brothers and forever in fear of her father putting her away again. Edie lived like everyday would be her last with mass excess in every aspect. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

EP 66: Interview with Maureen Van Zandt
3522
We couldn’t be more excited to share this weeks interview with the beautiful, talently and supremely lovely Maureen Van Zandt! Maureen has had quite an incredible life and it was such a joy to hear some of her stories! Her passion for dance and the theatre has been the center of her life since she was a young girl leading her to work both on and off Broadway. She has built an amazing career for herself, not just dancing and acting but developing her own theatre companies and producing the plays the matter to her most. In this episode, Maureen talks about some of the more memorable plays she’s participated in and her latest theatre company, Renegade Theatre, which she created with Soprano’s co-star and friend Vincent Pastore. Maureen also shares with us her passion for music. When the British Invasion hit, so did Maureen’s love of rock n roll. When she wasn’t dancing, teenage Maureen could be found working at a record shop, going to concerts and hanging at all the hot spots where the coolest names in rock n roll visited. Maureen tells us some incredible stories from those early years, like taking a ride in James Brown’s Purple Caddy as well as visiting Electric Lady Studios where she listened to the Jimi Hendrix Experience lay down some tracks! As if that weren’t Rock N Roll enough, wait until you hear about Maureen’s wedding to her husband of 36 years, Stevie Van Zandt! She tells us the story of how they met and all about what was no doubt the most rockin’ wedding party ever! One of the MANY reasons we love the Van Zandt’s is for their outstanding philanthropy. Maureen tells us about some incredible programs such as Little Kids Rock, The Rock n Roll Forever Foundation and their incredible curriculum TeachRock which is not only now used in classrooms across America but can also be accessed online, all for free, over at teachrock.org. We discuss the importance of women supporting one another and the joy that can be found from teaching others. Maureen is also a fellow podcaster! EP 65: Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe
4953
This week Lynx shares the story behind the unique friendship of two iconic artists, Patti Smith & Robert Mapplethorpe. After discovering the arts at a very young age Patti Smith dreamed of not only becoming an artist herself but to find a partner to share inspiration with. At age 20, on her first day as a New Yorker she found just that. Patti and Robert Mapplethorpe immediately hit it off and were soon living together, working side by side. Patti and Robert were your typical young, starving artists, creating nonstop and earning just enough to scrape by. Money may have been sparse but they had all they needed in each other. “One cannot imagine the mutual happiness we felt when we sat and drew together. We would get lost for hours.” Together they made a vow to never leave the other until both felt ready to stand on their own. Over time their relationship would begin to shift, but their bond remained strong. Robert began to explore his interest in men and while that initially came as a shock to Patti she always supported him through that journey. “His drives toward men were consuming but I never felt loved any less. We kept our vow, neither would leave the other. I never saw him through the lens of his sexuality. My picture of him remained intact. He was the artist of my life.” Patti also began to date others and had memorable relationships with fellow writers Jim Carroll and Sam Shepard. In those early years when Patti and Robert weren’t busy working in their tiny apartment at the legendary Hotel Chelsea one could find them downstairs at the El Quixote or in the back room of Max's Kansas City, mingling with fellow artists like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Neuwirth, Todd Rundgren and the Andy Warhol Crowd. Neither had yet found the medium they would become most known for, but each seemed to be able to sense where the other belonged with Patti constantly encouraging Robert to pick up a camera and take photos and Robert trying his hardest to get Patti to perform her poetry onstage. They never gave up on their art or each other and soon each began to find success. Robert finally did pick up that camera and started getting shows at galleries while Patti began to perform at poetry readings with Lenny Kaye on guitar beside her. Not only did that lead to Patti getting her poetry published, she also realized the stage is where she belonged and officially formed a band. Each came into their own and succeeded in their vow. The night before Robert passed away Patti made one last vow. “I told him I would continue our work, our collaboration, for as long as I lived. Will you write our story? Do you want me to? You have to, he said, no one but you can write it. I will do it I promised.” In 2010 Patti fulfilled that promise and Just Kids was published. It is an incredibly touching, beautifully written love letter to Robert and their time together. Be sure you check it out to learn even more about Patti and Robert. Learn more about your ad choices. EP 63: Ann Moses
5025
This week Lynx tells Chanty all about the delightful Ann Moses! When Ann scored herself a job at Tiger Beat Magazine she, like it’s readers, was just a teen herself. Within a few short years she would go from a part time editorial assistant to editor in chief of the ever growing tween magazine. If you’re picturing her stuck at some desk… think again. Ann spent the majority of her time outside the office. You may have found her traveling on tour buses with Tiger Beat faves like Paul Revere & The Raiders , Dino, Desi & Billy and Standells, or hanging out on tv and film sets like Where the Action Is, The Monkees and The Flying Nun. Ann would also have the opportunity to see groups like The Mamas & The Papas, Jefferson Airplane and The Bee Gees in the recording studio and could always be found backstage or in the front row for concerts such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Monterey Pop Festival. Ann worked hard to create personal pieces she knew the readers would love and had a blast doing so. She had exclusive onset access to The Monkees and spent hours with the boys for material for her monthly Monkee column (You’ll have to tune in to hear what she thought about the boys!). As she says in her memoir “It rarely occurred to me back then, that I was living the dreams of the girls I was writing for: Hanging out with cute teen idol rock stars until the wee hours, having the very kind of chaste fun I was forced to write about. Well, mostly chaste”. When Ann met Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees sparks flew and she soon found herself staying at the Gibb residence in England. There, the pair began to fall in love, though not everyone was happy about that (we’re looking at you Lulu!). While Ann managed to keep her own inner fangirl in check while working she was not always immune. When she got chosen to be one of the lucky few to sit at ELVIS PRESLEY’s feet during his comeback tv special she was ecstatic & even more so when she watched and discovered her face superimposed over his when he sang “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. The King never did personal interviews, but that didn’t stop Ann from getting onset of one of his films and meeting the man himself! Ann’s fantastic memoir Meow! My Groovy Life with Tiger Beats Teen Idols is filled with so many incredible stories there was just too many to fit into one episode! Ep 62: Pauline Butcher and Frank Zappa
4858
This week we take you all the way back to the 1960’s to a log cabin nestled in Laurel Canyon. Chanty tells Lynx the story of Pauline Butcher, Frank Zappa’s secretary. This episode is based on her book: FREAK OUT! My life with Frank Zappa. So how did a secretary from England come to know, befriend and even live with Frank Zappa, his wife Gail and all of the “freaks” in Laurel Canyon? Who is Suzy Creamcheese? What was it like living in a log cabin where anyone including Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull , Captain Beefheart, Graham Nash or Joni Mitchell might walk through the door on any given day? To our squealing delight, we learn that Pauline became close with our beloved GTOs (The Girls Together Outrageously), documenting their formation, beginning and wacky time together. We remind our listeners where the word “Groupie” came from and go back to a time when Hollywood was a trusting community and you just never knew who might stop by or what might happen. Other notable characters we chat about this week is (of course) our amazing Pamela Des Barres (the most “professional” of the girls), Cynthia Plaster Caster, Miss Mercy, Christine (the Zappa’s babysitter), Tiny Tim and like always- it seems-Eric Clapton. EP 61: Suze Rotolo and Bob Dylan
5388
This week Lynx takes you Greenwich Village in the 1960’s where poetry, politics and folk music take center stage. As a “red diaper baby” with 2 Communist parents, political activism was built into Suze’s DNA. As a young teenager Suze Rotolo began hanging out in Greenwich Village with other like-minded friends and was soon a fixture at clubs such as Gerdes Folk City, The Gaslight, Kettle of Fish and The Bitter End. Places that launched the careers of many folk singers such as Dave Van Ronk, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul and Mary, ODETTA and of course Bob Dylan. When remembering their first encounter, Bob said “I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was the most erotic thing I’d ever seen. We started talking and my head started to spin. Cupids arrow had whistled past my ears before, but this time it hit me in the heart and the weight of it dragged me overboard.” Just like that Dylan met his first, and most important Muse. Bob had only recently moved to NYC from his small town in Minnesota and it was through Suze that he would not only discover many of the poets and writers that would greatly influence his work but also learn about the political issues he would soon be known for writing about. But as Dylan began to make a name for himself Suze could feel hers being diminished. “All that was offered to a musicians girlfriend in the early 60’s was a role as her boyfriend’s “chick”, a string on his guitar. In the case of Bob’s rising fame, I would be gatekeeper, one step closer to an idol. People would want to know me just to get closer to him. My significance would be based on his greater significance. That idea did not entice.” But Suze was much more than just a string on Dylan’s guitar. Or the girl walking down the street with him on the cover of A Freewheelin' Time. In 2008 she published her fantastic memoir A Freewheelin’ Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties. EP 59: Jan Gaye
5476
Life had never been easy for Jan but growing up listening to Marvin Gaye's sweet soulful voice on the record player came with daydreams of a promising future. So when the opportunity came to meet the man of her dreams there was no way Jan wasn’t going to seize the opportunity. She didn’t care that Marvin was still legally married or about their 17 year age difference and neither, it seems, did Marvin. Before long the pair were inseparable and with Jan as his muse, Marvin began making the sexiest music of his career. But as their relationship progressed Jan was quickly learning that not only was Marvin tormented with deep-seated insecurities, he was also a man who believed that to create great art one must suffer. Thus began a wild roller-coaster of great highs and horrific lows that Jan found inescapable. Plagued with her own insecurities, the main one being the thought of losing the man she had so longed to be with, Jan began putting her own feelings to the side in order to please his. “I wanted to give him the children that he asked for. I wanted to let him have his flings, even if I had to bite my lip later and cry when he was away. I gave in when I probably shouldn’t have. I danced along that dangerous line of being accommodating but not giving in too much, and I was often left alone and hurting.” Tune in to hear Lynx tell Chanty all about Jan and Marvin’s time together and make sure you pick up Jan’s incredible must-read memoir After the Dance. EP 57: Pat Benatar
4422
Singer-Songwriter. Business Woman. Rock ’n’ Roll Icon. Feminist. Trailblazer. Wife & Mother. Put all that together (and then some!) and you have this weeks muse, the incredible Pat Benatar! Growing up Pat dreamed of being part of a dynamic rock ’n’ roll duo. Jagger & Richards, Plant & Page, she may have had the vocal chops but to make it to Rocks greatest heights she knew she needed a phenomenal guitarist by her side. It was while working on her first album, In the Heat of the Night, that Pat was introduced to Neil (Spyder) Giraldo. In Pat’s words “From he moment he stepped into the room our lives changed- first musically and later romantically and spiritually. Without Neil my career would not have happened, because I am not responsible for it, we are responsible for it, all of it. We were each others Muse.” Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo Together they worked hard to build a musical career that has spanned nearly 40 years and through it all Pat fought hard on the front lines battling sexism in an industry that had not yet seen a woman climb to such rock ’n’ roll heights. Tune in to her the details of her journey and make sure to read her 2010 memoir Between a Rock and a Heart Place. EP 55: Mary Weiland and Scott Weiland
4667
Mary Forsberg was only 16 years old when she first met Scott Weiland. Seven years her senior, Scott had been hired to chauffeur Mary around to her modelling gigs. While their attraction was immediate, their careers were taking them in different directions. As Mary was jet-setting from Milan to Tokyo to Paris for exciting fashion shoots, Scott and his band, Stone Temple Pilots were beginning to dominate the airwaves. But great success doesn’t automatically equal great happiness. Both Scott and Mary were trying to find ways to deal with their depression and mental health issues. By the time their paths collided and they became a couple they each were also fighting with addiction. In no time at all they found themselves living in a rock n roll cliche. As Scott said, “It’s Bonnie & Clyde, rock n roll, hell on wheels. We know were gonna crash, but we keep on going. But what goes up has to come down, and it does. Hard.” For Mary, “The days run together, the drugs run together & the rehabs run together too.” But with motherhood came another reason to keep fighting the battle. While Mary focused on the children Scott would continue the never ending cycle of addiction for the rest of his life. Not wanting to give up on her soulmate, Mary often paid the price of her own mental stability to try and keep their family together. They officially divorced in 2007 after 7 years of marriage. When Scott passed away in 2015 Mary and their children wrote a piece for Rolling Stone saying “Let’s choose to make this the first time we don’t glorify this tragedy with talk of rock and roll and the demons that, by the way, don’t have to come with it.” We highly recommend reading Mary’s book, Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Mental Illness. She goes into great detail about her experiences with addiction, her journeys through detox & rehabilitation as well as her struggles with mental illness. It was incredibly informative and relatable for anyone who has struggled through these things. Scott also wrote a memoir called Not Dead & Not For Sale. For those who are interested in his music, Scott goes over all his most personal songs, his time in Velvet.Revolver, and his passion for Mary. “I know that my songs are hopelessly entangled with my obsession with Mary. I see my passion for her as a force that never stops. I’m forever chasing her.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

EP 53: Pamela Courson and Jim Morrison
4167
This week we bring you the love story of Pamela Courson and Jim Morrison! While the stories of how they met may differ, one thing was clear from the very beginning – Jim and Pam were meant to be. Jim was only beginning to move into music then, his band The Doors working hard to build a career. Pamela was with him every step of the way not only supporting his dreams but becoming muse for both his lyrics and poetry. They became a famous duo among the Laurel Canyon crowd, living in “the house on Love Street”. While they were famous for being great lovers they were also famous for their constant fights and Jim’s out of control alcohol use. As Pamela once said, “There were a lot of people who pretended to be close to Jim, but I was the only one who had the nerve to stand up to him.” They may both have had a dark side, but their love for one another was pure. Pamela was one of the very few people Jim trusted to bare his true self to and they both knew no matter how many fights, or flings the pair may have had, they would always have each other. As The Doors rose to great success so did Jim’s alcoholism, leading to tensions within the band as well as numerous arrests and court cases. By 1971, Jim & Pamela knew in order to regain control of their lives, they had to get away from the chaos surrounding them. They decided to move to Paris, even though they both didn’t speak a word of French. They had each other after all, and that’s all they needed. Within 4 months Pamela would awake to find Jim had passed away in the night. A piece of Pamela died that night as well, though she stuck around long enough to fight the legal battles to ensure Jim legacy and wishes not be forgotten. They would both be deceased by age 27, though their love story has filled our airwaves and libraries ever since. As Ray Manzarek said “Pamela and Jim are going to go down in the history books as great lovers and people are going to be writing plays about them. It’s Romeo & Juliet, it’s Heloise & Abelard, it’s Jim & Pam.” There have been many books written about Jim which discuss Pamela, and there are many conflicting stories about their lives together. I had read many of these before but it wasn’t until reading Patricia Butler’s book Angels Dance & Angels Die that I felt Pamela got a fair representation. This book is the main base for this episode and an absolute must read! Please go check it out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

EP 51: Kathy Etchingham
5200
This week is all about Kathy Etchingham! Packing her bags and leaving her troubled childhood behind her at only 16, Kathy moved to London in search of the fun, glamourous lifestyle she had always dreamed of. She immediately found herself immersed in the swinging rock ‘n’ roll nightlife, having fun flirtations, memorable interactions and lasting friendships with musicians such as Keith Moon, BRIAN JONES, John Lennon & many more. When she met Jimi Hendrix on his first night in England the pair immediately fell for one another and began a 3 year relationship. Together they were each other’s constants, creating the home they both longed for as children. “Kathy is my past girlfriend, my present girl friend and probably my future girlfriend. My mother, my sister and all that bit. My Yoko Ono from Chester.” As Jimi’s career skyrocketed, touring became the norm and the pair grew apart, their relationship shifting from lovers to friends. Jimi wouldn’t make it past 27, but Kathy was around to make sure his legacy would not be destroyed by vicious gossip and absurd myths. You’ll have to listen to hear the wild tale of how Kathy turned investigator and was instrumental in clearing up some of the false stories that plagued Jimi’s death. In 1997 Kathy fought to have their old flat at 23 Brook Street receive a Blue Heritage Plaque and she worked hard with the Handel Trust to launch the Jimi Hendrix Museum in 2016. Visitors can now take a step back in time and walk through a recreation of their groovy pad. Kathy wrote a wonderful book about her life titled Through Gypsy Eyes which you can purchase on her website http://www.kathyetchingham.com/ & you can plan a visit to the Hendrix museum at https://handelhendrix.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. EP 44: Ginger Alden (Elvis Month Part 3)
4279
"Elvis and Ginger" tells the story between Ginger Alden and Elvis Presley over the course of 9 months before his death. Ginger granted very little interviews over the years and has saved the intimate details of their relationship until this book. What was it like getting swept up into Elvis’ world? Listen in this week to find out as we finish off our 3 episode special based on this amazing book for Elvis Month! Elvis and Ginger met in 1976 when Elvis was looking for a girlfriend and requested to meet Miss Tennessee who happened to be Ginger’s sister! When a phone call came in from Graceland requesting Terry’s presence at Graceland, the girls were a little bit concerned about the late hour and asked if all 3 sisters could go. From that moment on the Alden’s lives would change for every and the next 9 months would be an absolute whirlwind. Ginger recounts Elvis’ sincere generosity, being loved by a difficult man whose goodness and giving spirit outweighed any faults as well as accounts of all the family, friends and staff who worked and stayed at Graceland. We clear up some misconceptions about Elvis’ life at this time (was he depressed?), what about those TV’s that he shot, the tantrums, the drugs? Ginger weighs in on what she saw and experienced and you might be surprised by what you learn (including the time Ginger’s FATHER met Elvis in the 50s, Elvis’ spirituality and alternative healing methods and hanging out with Roy Orbison!) This is a truly beautiful story of love between a young woman who was chosen by the King to be his next wife, unfortunately Ginger would never be able to re-do the home together like they planned or have his next child. Sadly, he passed on August 16th, 1977 and Ginger (NOT his manager, Joe) was the one to find him. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

EP 42: Ann- Margret Olsson (Elvis Month Part 1)
3415
Welcome to our triple ELVIS PRESLEY special! This month your dolls Chanty & Lynx celebrate The King and the women he loved to honour the 40th anniversary of his passing. There’s even a bonus episode for those who have yet to listen as Chanty recorded one all about the incredible Tura Satana last year! First on the bill is the fireball Ann-Margret. Originally from Sweden, Ann-Margret Olsson came to America at age 5 and almost immediately began training for a career onstage. Her love of music and dance led her from one talent show to another until she joined a band as a teen. It was on summer vacation from Northwestern when Ann-Margret’s life would change forever. Playing gigs around LA and Vegas, Ann-Margret’s undeniable talent was noticed and she was soon a part of comedy legend George Burns’ show. From there Ann-Margret went onto films, getting her breakthrough role as groupie teen Kim McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie – a musical parody based on Elvis being drafted in the Army. For her next film the studios paired her with their leading male talent as the time… none other than Elvis himself. From the moment Viva Las Vegas went into rehearsals it was clear these two shared more then just raw sex appeal. The pair found themselves connecting deeper than they ever dreamed and began an intimate affair that would lead to a life-long bond. As Ann-Margret states in her in her autobiography My Story, “I’ll never recover from Elvis’ death. He’s a part of me, of my happiness and my sorrow and that will never go away. I treasure the time we were together, and I feel lucky and fulfilled that we were able to sustain such a long loving and caring friendship. It’s rare to have such a friend as Elvis, rare to have such a soul mate.” Ann-Margret has had many high points in her life including 2 Oscar nominations, 4 Golden Globe wins, countless sold-out tours and one of the longest lasting marriages in Hollywood (To 77 Sunset Strip actor Roger Smith), but she has also experienced her share of lows. Lynx tells Chanty all about Ann-Margret’s shady business managers, an accident that almost cost her everything as well as her battles with alcohol and substance abuse. If you haven’t yet done so we highly recommend checking out Viva Las Vegas as well as early youtube videos of Ann-Margret performing, you’ll see right away why the press dubbed her “The Female Elvis”. EP 40: Viv Albertine
3106
This week we bring you the incredible story of Viv Albertine which begins with the birth of punk rock in England. As a fashion student at the Chelsea School of Art she began dating Mick Jones (who would shortly form his band The Clash) and made friends with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. When McLaren invited her out to see The Sex Pistols perform, Viv’s life would change forever. Dreaming of a music career since she was a child, she now saw in punk rock a bridge to her dream. Viv got a guitar and formed a band with her new best friend Sid Ritchie (you may know him as Sid Vicious) and began creating her own unique sound. When Sid left to join The Sex Pistols, Viv found her place in the kick ass all girl punk band The Slits. They would go on to record 2 albums and tour with punk icons such as The Buzzcocks, The Clash and Subway Sect. Viv’s relationship with Mick didn’t last (nor did her fling with New York Doll Johnny Thunders) but made rock n roll history when it ended up as material in songs like The Slits’ Ping-Pong Affair and The Clash’s classic Train in Vain. After The Slits broke up, Viv focused her talents on film directing many music videos for a new channel called MTV as well as working in tv with the BBC. She married and became a mother burying her musical side until Vincent Gallo came into her life. Their friendship was “like a secret door being opened again to a world I left a long time ago.” Their conversations reignited a spark in Viv and in 2009 she began performing again, this time as a solo artist. Viv recounts her punk rock journey in her incredible memoir "Clothes, Music, Boys" as well as her battle with cancer, her struggles trying to become a mother and her search for identity outside the roles of “wife” and “mother”. The punk spirit lives on in Viv. In 2016 she “defaced” a male-focused punk exhibit at the British Library, taking a pen and adding in all the incredible female musicians who were at the forefront of punk. She also has a song called Confessions of a MILF! You can find Viv Albertine on twitter @viv_albertine & Instagram @vivalbertine and we highly recommend picking up her memoirs. EP 37: Jo Wood
4479
This week's episode: Jo Wood (It's Only Rock and Roll- 30 Years Married to a Rolling Stone) is now up on our website and iTunes!! When Jo Wood Official met Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood at a party in 1977 she thought he was ridiculous and snubbed him. For Ronnie however it “was love at first sight, the absolute”. He set out to find her, redeemed himself after their hilarious first encounter (You gotta listen to find out why!) and in no time at all the pair were absolutely smitten. It wasn’t long after that Ronnie and Jo began their life together in sunny LA. The Stones were about to tour their latest album “Some Girls” and Jo, pregnant with their first child tagged along, the first of many tours to come. “I positioned myself half hidden behind an amp and the adrenalin rush was better than the hit of any drug”. The pair would have 2 children, as well as each having a son from their previous spouses. On their 7 year anniversary Ronnie would pop the question and he and Jo were married in 1985. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Jo took on the role of Ronnie’s tour PA, making her the only The Rolling Stones wife officially on the payroll. In the early 90’s Jo would be diagnosed with a perforated appendix. Her battle through this painful period led her to what has become her life’s passion, organic & sustainable living. Jo changed her entire lifestyle, began growing her own organic food and creating wonderful beauty products for herself and friends until one day turning it into a business. While Jo and Ronnie were passionately in love, Ronnie’s substance abuse and alcoholism would end up ruling their relationship. In 2008 sixty-one year old Ronnie met nineteen year old Katia Ivanova and began an affair. This was a devastating time for Jo, but she turned her pain into progress and began learning how to be on her own. “Now when I look back, the divorce is the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me the woman I am today. Im closer to my kids and I know I’m a better person. I’ve grown up, I’ve become independent, I can look after myself now.” As for her and Ronnie, the pair remain close and spend plenty of time together with their kids and 10 grandchildren! In 2013 Jo published her fabulous memoirs, “It’s Only Rock n Roll: Thirty Years Married to a Rolling Stone”. The book is filled with fun, often crazy and always fascinating stories from her wild life as well as magnificent descriptions of tour life, something she obviously loved dearly. EP 35: Sandra Dee
4257
This week Chanty and Lynx step back in time to give you the story behind dream lovers Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee. Joined by modern day crooner and friend Alex Bird, Lynx and Alex tell Chanty not only Sandra’s life story but Bobby’s as well. Both Sandra and Bobby’s childhood experiences with illness and abuse would forever shape both of their careers and their relationship with one another. Meeting on set in Italy in 1960 it was (almost) love at first sight for Bobby and Sandra. By the end of the shoot the pair were engaged and would marry within 3 months of meeting. Within the year, Sandra would be pregnant with their son Dodd. While they truly loved each other, they both were struggling with issues stemming back from childhood. Having given a life expectancy he’d already passed, Bobby was determined to become a legend before it was too late, pouring all of his energy into his career in both music and film. Sandra was more self destructive, having experienced sexual abuse since the age of 5 and being raised by an overbearing mother with strange ideas involving mealtimes; Sandra would rebel by limiting her food intake and self medicating with alcohol. While their personal issues would lead to their eventual divorce, they would remain very close until Bobby’s death at the age of 37 in 1973. Bobby’s death would hit Sandra hard and she would never again be with another man. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that Sandra would publicly discuss the traumas of her childhood and face her alcoholism and anorexia. In 1993 their son, along with Sandra’s help wrote ‘Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin & Sandra Dee’. Sandra received an outpouring of love and would spend her remaining years close with her son and 2 grandchildren. Nowadays it’s rare to find a performer like Darin who can do it all which is one of the reasons our friend Alex Bird is so special. Like Darin, he’s a man of many talents. EP 34: Interview with Denise Donlon
4132
Denise began her career in music as a MUCH Music VJ in 1985 and by 1992 was named director of Music Programming before becoming VP and General manager in 1997. In the year 2000 Denise became the first female President of Sony Music Canada and remained there for 4 years. From 2008-2011 Denise was the Executive Director of CBC English Radio. She has devoted herself to numerous charitable initiatives, working with organizations such as War Child Canada, Music Counts and the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership. She is a Feminist, a Humanist and a bad ass Social Activist. Denise also knows first hand that David Bowie always smelled like he had just gotten out of the shower. She has worked with and befriended many Canadian music LEGENDS such as Murray McLauchlan (who also happens to be her husband!), Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. We had the privilege of sitting down with Denise Freakin' Donlon at our Muses Headquarters where we got to pick that beautiful brain of hers. We ask such questions as: Is there a fine line between a Foolish and a Fearless Question? Why is it important to mix music and World Issues? and Which musicians today embody the Music + Meaning = Magic formula? Chanty comes out of yet another closet, the girls are so enthralled by Denise that they forget to take a picture... and the girls bliss out about how they were taken to Jazz/Peace Heaven. Other amazing Canadian bands discussed this episode are The Jerry Cans / Pai Gaalaqautikkut, A Tribe Called Red, Tanya Tagaq and Les Hay Babies. Ep 24: Cyrinda Foxe
3486
This week Chanty and Lynx discuss the stunningly beautiful Cyrinda Foxe. Raised in a strict, often abusive household, Cyrinda found solace in rock n roll music and magazines. It was there she discovered women like Marianne Faithfull, Pattie Boyd, and Anita PAllenberg- divine women she describes as “absolutely superior”. In 1971, Cyrinda left home for New York City. It wasn’t long before she became a regular at Max’s Kansas City, making friends with Leee Black Childers and Candy Darling who transformed her look, giving her the “Marilyn Makeover” that caught the eye of Andy Warhol. Andy cast her in “Pork" where she met and befriended Cherry Vanilla, a woman she describes as “A pure work of art” (Chanty and Lynx full heartedly agree with this sentiment!!) It was through Cherry and Leee that Cyrinda met and fell for her first rockstar, David Bowie. Their affair was hot, hot, hot, and we have Cyrinda to thank for the fantastic song “Jean Genie” (though the lyrics are about Iggy Pop and not her!). Her first marriage was to New York Dolls frontman David Johansen, but it’s her tempestuous second marriage to Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler (and the tell-all book she wrote about it!) that really caused a stir. Lynx and Chanty discuss all this, and Cyrinda’s deep aversion to the word “groupie”... Listen to this week's episode for the full story! Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe on iTunes!!
