Contractions: What You Can Expect, How to Know It’s Time for You to Head to Your Birth Place, & How to Keep Track
2528
I hope this week’s topic really resonates with you guys. I’ve said it before, I think the most exciting part of pregnancy (other than finding out you’re pregnant!) is figuring out that you’re in labor! 🥳 Most births are not like the movies. They don’t typically start with a massive gush of water followed by insanely intense contractions that have mom rushing to the hospital. 🚑 That’s not to say a birth can’t start with your waters breaking and even immediate contractions, but most often, you’re going to have some time to ease into labor. With that in mind, I’m going to walk you through what you can expect with those first contractions, what you can do to help manage them as they increase in intensity and consistency, and how you can easily keep track if you want to. 📝 Contraction Timer & Counter 9m Contraction Timer - Time Labor GET IN TOUCH! 🤩 |

Almost Didn't Make It - Kayla's Unmedicated Birth Story
2995
Kayla and her husband, Grant, share about what mattered most when preparing for their first birth and how they are getting ready to meet this baby! Kayla openly shares about her struggle with and ultimate decision to become a mother. Her and Grant discuss the open communication that was so crucial for them prior to and during pregnancy. Kayla also discusses her concern with the changes having a child would make to her body, especially considering she is in the fitness industry. This is a must-listen because I know many, many women struggle with these same things and I love how she was able to work through each of these challenges. Her birth story is incredible as well! She talks about how all of her prep left her unconvinced that she was even in labor come birthing time AND how she arrived at the hospital just in time to birth her baby, unmedicated, and exactly how she had planned for. I hope you absolutely enjoy listening to this week's birth story episode! **PLUS, Kayla is an incredible Pilates instructor and she discusses how she uses movement and core work as part of her everyday birth prep and she has included a free download for everyone - available here!

Covid-19 + Birth {Challenges & Benefits)
2725
If there is one thing I have learned as a life lesson that is also 100% applicable to all things birth, it's that every single challenge can be an incredible learning lesson and this holds true for what happened while women were pregnant and birthing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Challenges like pulling birth partners out of the birth rooms (unacceptable btw), moving healthy, low-risk moms to out of hospital births (the challenge is in the unexpected), mental health, women being pushed to their limits. They were all so daunting and so difficult. But... Tune into this episode because the other side of those challenges are so beautiful. Birth partners figured out what they need to know and how to support these moms - because what if they could get in but the doula wasn't allowed?, women realized how strong they were and that their bodies were made for birth when they moved their care out of hospital, women found their voices and started asking questions about policy and legalities - they stood up for themselves and their babies, and hopefully we all learned a little compassion no matter where you were at - pregnant or provider.

2407
If you haven't heard of "Occupational Therapy," join the club! I literally never heard of this until Kayln reached out to me and it's something I think every mom should be aware of. In case you have NO idea what OT's do - it's holistic care from professionals that are trained to help people get back to all of their normal things they do in life. It can be as "small" as getting in and out of bed, making sure you're showered for the day, getting back to exercises or rock climbing...literally whatever your normal and joyful day looks like - they help. Kayln Robertshaw is an occupational therapy doctorate student at Rocky Mountain College in Billings Montana. She grew up in Frederick County Maryland, where her passion to enter the healthcare field first started. After graduating from James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, with a concentration of Health Studies and a minor in special education. Kayln resides in Utah with her husband and son where she is finishing up her last year of graduate school with clinical rotations. Her current passions and interests are working with babies 0-3 years old through early intervention and working with adults who have acquired neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and strokes. After finding out she was pregnant in March of 2021, she started listening to the My Essential Birth podcast. Thanks to the strategies, education and inspiration she gained from this podcast, she was empowered to successfully have an unmedicated birth. Top 10 Red Flags From Your Provider

Do you know how to tell if your provider is going to be a supportive part of your birth team? I see moms run into this issues a lot. You know how much I talk about the importance of a supportive provider BUT how do you know if you're provider is the right one?! One of the things I hope this episode does for you, is make some of your own assumptions about your provider's supportiveness, or lack thereof, clear and give you ideas about what questions you should ask to figure out if you're on the same page. I'm covering things like how you choose to birth (medicated or unmedicated - yes providers may have unsupportive opinions about this), cesarean birth rates, inductions, vaccines, birth plans, doulas and more. Trigger warning! Some of the topics we cover in this episode are sensitive to some mamas. Everything here is meant to inform, give you excellent examples, and be a starting point to having those tough conversations with your provider. First Baby, Birthing with Midwives: Taylor’s Birth Story
2672
Today’s guest is Taylor, a new mom and student of My Essential Birth, who recently gave birth to the first baby in her family. In spite of rough symptoms in the first trimester, Taylor had an extremely positive experience being pregnant. As the life grew inside of her, she experienced a wide array of emotions, symptoms, and cravings (most strongly that of watermelon). Though visits to a chiropractor alleviated some of the symptoms, after delivery they completely disappeared, showing that 99% of the solutions to pregnancy-related symptoms are to just have your baby. Taylor describes the initial doubts in her mind when she first learned she was expecting, but something that helped to quell the barrage of “what ifs” was the support of her husband. For the first 20 weeks of her pregnancy, Taylor saw a doctor and observed that despite a courteous bedside manner, they did not often spend the time to get to know her. Rather than taking the time to understand her expectations for her pregnancy and delivery, doctors tended to approach her and her baby with an assembly line rigidity. In contrast, seeing a midwife opened Taylor up to a higher level of attention in all aspects of her life, meeting her expectations with open ears. Taylor woke up to contractions and within a few hours rushed to the birth center where she safely gave birth. In spite of its title, a Natural Birth doesn’t just happen. It’s not easy, but being prepared and putting work in beforehand will allow you to go into birth with confidence. Just because it’s not easy, doesn’t mean it needs to be confusing. Taylor highlights the techniques that helped through the early stages of her labor, natural approaches that helped her feel relaxed and comfortable. In the days that followed, Taylor had to recover from a bad tear that prevented her from taking part in activities at home or for the baby. She illustrates the difficulty of the postpartum period and the reliance she had to place on those around her. Her lesson is that it’s okay not to be comfortable with your body in this period and to ask for help because it will pass and your body will heal. Taylor closes with advice to partners and moms. This is a hectic time for mom. Changes are going to come and the dynamic is going to shift. Now is the time for support and comfort, the time to be an anchor for your family. Moms are encouraged to take the birth course and be prepared for what is to come, both before, during, and after delivery. GET IN TOUCH! 🤩 |

Informed consent is so important to her and I know when you take a listen you will understand why and feel empowered to stand up for yourself. On this weeks podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting with one of the members of the My Essential Birth Course, and talking about her most recent birth experience. Erica is a mother of three, and due to previous births that were less than she had hoped for, she decided to explore a different option for her third pregnancy. She talks about her provider experience - what needed to change for this birth, course experience - what worked well, and her partner's experience - how he was not only able to step up and support her but also how he was so proud of her afterwards. We also talked about many other important aspects of pregnancy and birth. You're in for a treat with this beautiful birth story! GET IN TOUCH! 🤩 |

Prodromal Labor & What It Means for Your Birth
2441
This week’s episode is going to focus on all of the ins and outs of prodromal labor. 2020 changed a lot of things for birth, including causing a ton of prodromal labor for expecting mamas. In this episode, I walk you through exactly what prodromal labor is, what the risks are, if there are any benefits, how to prevent it, what to do for yourself (and baby) if you end up experiencing it, and what it means for the end-game - in other words, how it affects your birth plan and if it ultimately means you can’t have the birth you were hoping for. Since this is something affecting tons of pregnant moms right now, you're definitely going to want to give this episode a listen and then tuck it away to review for later. Induction: When Is It Necessary + How to Make It Successful
2498
Women are being forced into unnecessary inductions which makes me pose the question, do women’s bodies need to be forced into labor as much as they are being right now, and if there is a medically-necessary reason for this, how can we make it an excellent experience? In this episode I want to discuss what would constitute some medical reasons for inductions AND what you can do when an induction becomes necessary. This is something I get asked quite a bit. Once you do have a medical reason for induction, how does that change the birth plan? What do you need to know? I want you to have all of the best evidence-based information that will help you ask good questions, get all the information, and ultimately be able to make the decision that is best AND feels best for you. Why Partners Love Doulas for Birth Support

If your partner is thinking that there's really no point in having a doula because that's kind of taking over their job, or they don't think it's worth the financial investment, or they just literally have no idea what a doula does, they're not alone! This episode is going to walk you through our (my husband + me) journey to discovering what a doula was, why she might be beneficial, if she was actually worth the investment, and if we would hire one again. Making Your Birthplace Like Home & Why It Matters

Often when we head to our birthplace we are walking away from all of the things that bring us comfort. What if we told you that there was a way to create more of an at-home experience in whatever setting you're birthing in AND that it will even help your labor to progress more comfortably? Oxytocin and adrenaline have an interesting relationship and when oxytocin is flowing it's generally due in part to mom feeling safe and being able to relax. Hint: Oxytocin is the hormone that causes contractions and the same hormone that flows during intercourse. Naturally, if you can find a way to be more relaxed and feel safe, your body will react positively to those feelings. GET IN TOUCH! 🤩 |

We are going to dive a bit deeper into the good and bad of what's covered in a typical hospital class and why your chances of learning about how your body and birth work during labor are greater in an out of hospital class. We want all of you mamas to have the opportunity to achieve your best birth and that comes through knowing all of your options. You can't decide what you want unless you know what you can have.
