#108 - The Garden Party
3352

A beautifully descriptive, slice-of-life story from Katherine Mansfield about childhood innocence and caring for your neighbors.

Innocence, or collinsia heterophylla, is also the name of one of my favorite flowers, and they just started blooming up here on the mountain. Purple and white, they are a little less than a foot tall and look like tiny pagodas. You can see some pictures I took on the blog at https://www.listentosleep.com/blog/innocence/

A sleepy fairy tale about a young orphaned prince and princess and the little bird who helps them finally find their home.

One of my favorite migratory birds, the black-headed grosbeaks, have returned to the mountain. Their song is as beautiful as their plumage, so I recorded it and put it in the podcast this week to share it with you. There's also a picture of the bird who's singing it on my blog at https://www.listentosleep.com/blog/black-headed-grosbeak/ if you want to see what he looks like.

#106 - The Muzhik Who Fed Two Officials
2057

A sleepy 19th century Russian satire written as a fairy tale in which two helpless government officials are saved by a hard-working muzhik.

Bodhi and I ran across a patch of canyon larkspur on a hike this week, and when I went to find out more about it, it led me down an amazing internet rabbit hole filled with information about the Yuki Native Americans, this land's original inhabitants. You can see pictures of the canyon larkspur flowers and find links to studies of Yuki uses for our native plants and vivid stories of their culture on my blog at https://www.listentosleep.com/blog/canyon-larkspur/.

#52 - Guest Artist - Andy The Doorbum - Prometheus And Pandora - Bonus Episode
1396

Over the past few months, I reached out to some artists whose work I love and respect to ask them if they would be interested in reading to you. This bonus episode is read by Andy Fenstermaker, who makes music and poetry as Andy The Doorbum. He is full of heart and not afraid to dive into the darkness to shine a light or simply sit and wait for the sun to return.

During the past few months of quarantine here in California, he put together a haunting and beautiful album of covers as a tribute to the music of some of his good friends. It's called Even When The Cat Comes and it's available for free at http://andythedoorbum.com. I love it, and I hope you do too. Andy reads Prometheus and Pandora. It's a classic tale with some very dark and real moments. Like some of the other stories I read here, it may not be suitable for small children, but if you like a bit of darkness as you nod off, you're going to love this. Andy also composed and played the music in this episode.

If you鈥檇 like to read it yourself, you can download the story for free at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/22693.

#20 - Lt. Col. Vindman's Statement To US House Committees 10-29-19 - Bonus Episode
953

As a public service, these bonus episodes will be posted as I have time to read them. Here is the opening statement made by Lt. Col. Vindman to the US House Committees during a closed-door session on 10/29/19.

For those who are reassured and lulled to sleep by these, I read them as bedtime stories. It's basically an "Impeach To Sleep" mini series with important testimony that is not available as an audio file from a public hearing. They will be in addition to the regular weekly stories, so if they're not your thing, just skip 'em. ;)
