How To Create Amazing Experiences, with Paul Zak, PhD
48:51

In this episode, we virtually sat down with our friend and one of the most insightful scientists, thinkers, writers in the field of human behavior, Dr. Paul J. Zak, PhD, who is a professor of economics, psychology, and management at Claremont Graduate University. He is ranked in the top 0.3 percent of most-cited scientists with over 170 published papers. He helped start several interdisciplinary fields, including neuroeconomics, neuromanagement, and neuromarketing, and is a regular TED speaker, four-time tech entrepreneur, and corporate consultant.

His work has been ground breaking in the academic, public, and now in business and healthcare settings. In his new book, Immersion: The Science of the Extraordinary and the Source of Happiness, Paul discusses how the world is rapidly transforming into an experience economy as people increasingly crave extraordinary experiences and that his research shows that there’s a scientific formula to consistently create extraordinary experiences. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

Dispelling Brain Health Misunderstandings: A Response to Joe Rogan and Max Lugavere
02:50:01

This episode is dedicated to clarification of a podcast between Joe Rogan and Max Lugavere, two popular influencers that have a large audience. They discussed Alzheimer’s disease and brain health in general and some of the information that was shared was not accurate, which can be really harmful.

This is by no means an attack on Rogan or Lugavere. After listening to the conversation, we think Lugavere may not be quite familiar with the data regarding brain health, and it would be important to set the record straight and share the evidence with people and let them decide what’s best for them. Having seen thousands of patients with dementia, whether it’s Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal lobe dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and others, we feel it’s our responsibility to share evidence based data as opposed to feel-good, self confirming anecdotes.

01:18:27

The New Alzheimer's Drug: Hope or a Massive Failure?
37:55

Welcome to the Brain Health Revolution Podcast! In this episode, we took a deep dive into the history and steps of FDA approval of the latest Alzheimer's drug, Aducanumab. Developed by the biotechnology company, Biogen, it is the first approved drug that attempts to treat a possible cause of the neurodegenerative disease rather than just the symptoms. But the approval has sparked a contentious debate over whether the drug is effective. Many experts, including an independent panel of neurologists and biostatisticians, advised the FDA that clinical-trial data did not conclusively demonstrate that Aducanumab could slow cognitive decline. Yet patient advocacy groups tout this as a miracle drug and one that provides hope and opens the doors for future therapeutics for this devastating disease.

In this episode, we discuss:

- The history of drug development for Alzheimer's

- Amyloid and Tau protein targeting

- How this drug was presented in 2019, rejected, reapplication by Biogen, its reanalysis data and final approval by FDA on June 7, 2021

- Side effects of the drug

- Price and the economics around the drug

- Long term consequences to the field

The Definitive Guide to Preventing Cognitive Decline
39:48

Friends, as many of you know, Alzheimer's prevention is personal to us. In our very first meeting, we connected over the shared loss of our grandparents to dementia and since then we have dedicated our lives to combating neurodegenerative diseases. This put us on-the-ground in communities around the nation. We saw family after family suffering from the tragedies of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and cognitive decline. This is when our life's purpose took shape, and it was to share this simple, but powerful, piece of information: cognitive decline is preventable and you already have most of the tools you need to do so.

That's why we are so excited that today we finally get to share our new book, The 30-Day Alzheimer’s Solution with you. This book was written with every intention of helping people. We want to make the science around lifestyle medicine and brain-health accessible and digestible to as many people as possible. The result? A guide to transforming your life in 30 days. We actively fight against that notion and want you to know: health starts with everyday habits, not hardcore protocols. The response has been incredible so far. Thanks to our collective efforts, we've seen the book rank as high as #15 on Amazon! All of the profits go towards the non-profit, Healthy Minds Initiative, whose aim is the improvement of brain health in communities through education, research and mobilization of resources.

Plant-based Life As a Family: The Life, The Love and The Science
01:03:09

In this episode, we are excited to share our conversation with our kids, Alex and Sophia Sherzai, also known as The Science Kids, about living a plant based life, its challenges, its benefits, the science behind it, and how they think this is more than just healthy living - it’s something that could determine the fate of this beautiful planet. We bring our kids into this conversation because it felt right to have them speak for themselves and share their voice.  We don’t believe in keeping it in an article or a book and would like to make the lifestyle and the science behind it easily accessible for every family and community.

You will hear us talk about why went plant-based and then transitioned from being a lacto-ovo vegetarian towards a whole-food, plant based diet, how the kids manage their social life being plant-based, what are some of the challenges we face as a family for being vegans, what are some of our kids' favorite snacks and meals, what supplements we use, some Dad jokes and other fun conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

The Science Kids produce amazing posts and content on their social media and YouTube channel.

On the Front Line of The Battle with COVID19 - with Dr. Shinkai Hakimi
56:42

The date is March 23, 2020. At the time of recording this episode, and in the last week, our world and the way we have known it has turned upside down. Today, we‘re talking about corona virus, or COVID-19 with with our dear fried and colleague,  Dr. Shinkai Hakimi who is a pulmonary critical care doctor in Monterey Bay, CA. She has special interest in public health, has worked extensively towards healthcare for refugees, and is one of the most knowledgeable physicians we know. She is on the front lines and knows first hand the trajectory of the disease here and in other countries and how it is evolving.

Currently, in the US,  we have about 42,700 identified cases with 541 deaths. Compare this number to last week when there were 4,400 cases and 75 deaths, and a week before that, it was 566 cases with 22 deaths.

This looks as ominous as what happened in china, when the numbers of infected cases  went from 549 in January to more than 80,000 cases by the beginning of March. In Italy the onslaught started with 155 cases at the end of February, with a few deaths to more than 59,000 cases today with up to 5,476 deaths and its rising at an exponential rate. This is not necessarily the case in all countries. In Singapore and in South Korea, the pattern was very different, and it’s attributed to early measures such as screening for people with fever or flu-like symptoms, banning large gatherings, directing people to work from home, and encouraging social distancing, and after 6 weeks, they were able to curb the spread of this virus.

There is evidence that our response - how quickly and extensively we institute public health measures could mean the difference between minimal additions to uncontrollable spread of this disease.

We are already late both at the community and national levels. The U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous classified warnings in January and February this year about the global danger posed by the coronavirus, yet we didn’t start taking this virus seriously until mid February. But even then, it was only talk and some mediocre local measures, but no major movement to mobilize tools and equipment for patients and health care workers, and no decisive preventive measures at the community level. But what is missed in all of this is what will possibly happen to our first line of defense - the health care community.

We hope you enjoy the conversation.

We would love 4 action items from all of you:

  1. Follow the public health recommendations from CDC and WHO, which strongly suggest social distancing, and universal hygiene measures like hand washing.
  2. Don’t go to the emergency room or urgent clinics for menial procedures or visits as they are already overwhelmed. And
  3. Please contact your local and national policy makers to get them to support what ever measure needed to get personal protection equipment for healthcare providers.
  4. Please share this information with your loved ones.

We hope you enjoy this conversation. If you liked it, please give us a review on Apple Podcast, and please share with friends so we can get the message of health, brain health and hope to a larger audience.

The Devastating Effect of Gender Bias in Healthcare - Challenges and Solutions
52:10

In episode # 12, we discuss one of the most important issues in the field of medicine - gender bias in healthcare - which has become an epidemic. Women’s diseases are often missed, misdiagnosed or remains a total mystery. There are tremendous knowledge gaps that are filled with hysteria narratives. Women are more likely to be labeled as “difficult”, “hysterical”, and “hypochondriacs” compared to men presenting with the same diseases. This has major negative consequences for both medical practice and the health of women. Join us as we reveal the profound effect of this bias across multiple diseases and their terrifying consequences, and shed light on ways we can help women get the appropriate attention and treatments for various diseases. We hope you enjoy this episode.

In the next episode, we take a deep dive on why women are affected by Alzheimer's disease disproportionally compared to men. We will expand on the relevant research that has been done to date on the subject, and discuss how the female brain is more susceptible due to various environmental and biological factors.

A Transformative Leader Revolutionizing Healthcare - Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams
43:52

In this episode, we sat down with Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams, a dynamic leader and a luminary who is changing healthcare as we know it. He previously served three terms in the New York State Senate and 22 years in the New York City Police Department. In 2016, after a series of painful symptoms and visual problems, he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. He soon learned about the profound effect of food on his health and adopted a whole food, plant-based diet and successfully reversed his diabetes. Since then, he has been a vocal proponent of a plant-based diet and has encouraged all Brooklynites to eat healthier. He has launched multiple initiatives to provide resources to the community regarding healthy nutrition, and also hosts various events at the Brooklyn Borough Hall to educate citizens on different health topics. He has also prompted the City Council to pass a resolution called "Ban the Baloney," which aims for schools across the city to stop serving processed meats to school kids, based on a 2015 World Health Organization report that labeled these products as Group 1 carcinogens, increasing the risk of diabetes, multiple cancers, and respiratory illnesses. He has also been an avid supporter of "Meatless Mondays" in public schools. He’s dedicating much of his efforts to empowering the community with new models of health.

Our entire life has been focused on evidence-based research and translating it to the population, which we believe is the missing link - the translation of preventive medicine to populations in modern medicine. And that is what inspires us so much about Eric’s work, who is making Brooklyn a role model city for other cities in the US. Learn more about his initiative by visiting this link:

Mastering Diabetes and Reversing Insulin Resistance - with Dr. Cyrus Khambatta PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH
01:15:33

In this episode, we discuss insulin resistance and energy metabolism in the brain and the rest of the body with brilliant lifestyle experts, Dr. Cyrus Khambatta PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH. Cyrus and Robby are living with Type 1 diabetes, and have been on all kinds of diets and program you can think of to manage their diabetes, and after years of trial and error and studying the evidence, they created the Mastering Diabetes Method to show how you can eat large quantities of carbohydrate-rich whole foods like bananas, potatoes, and quinoa while decreasing blood glucose, oral medication, and insulin requirements. Through their amazing work, they have helped thousands of individuals reverse their insulin resistance, lose weight and master their health.

Over the last decade, cumulative data have established that the brain is an insulin-sensitive organ. Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity are among the most expensive and disabling disorders worldwide. For a long time, the correlation between cognitive impairment and metabolic diseases was undetected. We now have evidence from several lines of research, including our own, that the incidence of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease is higher in type-2 diabetes patients, pointing to common mechanisms driving these disorders. Please join us on this episode as we go into the details of this very important topic that is extremely useful, whether you’re dealing with diabetes or not. It’s the key to understanding how our body uses glucose as an energy source, and what are the best ways for us to provide this fuel without taxing other systems. Cyrus and Robby have written a book titled Mastering Diabetes, which includes all of this incredibly important information and guides readers how to reverse insulin resistance in all types of diabetes: type 1, type 1.5, type 2, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes. They’ve included more than 800 scientific references and drawing on more than 36 years of personal experience living with type 1 diabetes themselves.

A courageous conversation with Adam Sud on overcoming addiction and finding comfort in discomfort
01:27:34

Welcome to the second episode of the Brain Health and Beyond Podcast! Our guest for this episode is our dear friend, Adam Sud, who is an international speaker for awareness of mental health and addiction. In 2012, Adam’s life was completely out of control. He was struggling with multiple addictions, serious chronic diseases, and mental health disorders. His life nearly ended when he attempted suicide by drug overdose. He checked into rehab and with the help of his parents and by adopting a plant-based diet, he began a journey that led to a remarkable recovery. He is now a diabetes and food addiction coach for Mastering Diabetes (masteringdiabetes.org), which is a program that focuses on reversing insulin resistance using low fat, whole food, plant-based nutrition. He also works with Engine2 and Whole Foods Market’s Total Health Immersion Team. He is an amazing force behind the plant-based movement and has worked in recovery centers using plant-based nutrition as an adjunct tool for recovery and relapse prevention. He has also founded a non-profit that is dedicated to advancing research on diet and mental health/addiction. He firmly believes that the simplest of things, done consistently, can make the most profound change of your life and that self-love is the root of all recovery.
