Someone They Knew: Last Call
2725
Ashley Biggs was a divorced single mom working hard as a Domino’s Pizza delivery person in order to provide for her family.  But someone used that very job against her when an unidentified woman placed a pizza order with specific instructions to a location where Ashley would be ambushed and murdered.  Almost immediately the police zeroed in on her ex-husband, Chad Cobb, who confessed to her killing, but that left the police with one looming, unanswered question – who was the woman who ordered that pizza?  This week’s Court TV podcast is an audio addition of Someone They Knew with Tamron Hall, an episode of Court TV’s original production that answers that very question.  Someone They Knew with Tamron Hall airs Sunday nights at 9pm eastern.  You can find out more about the show and upcoming episodes on CourtTV.com. The Jinx Murder Trial: Closing Arguments
2766
The marathon trial of California vs. Robert Durst is now in the hands of the jury, who as this podcast was recorded were deliberating the fate of the man accused of murdering his friend Susan Berman over 20 years ago.  The defense claims the prosecution bullied a sick old man with memory lapses all to make the jury hate the man in order to cover for lack of forensic evidence.  The prosecution says they don’t need that type of evidence because Durst’s own words are enough to convict him.  Court TV’s Ted Rowlands and Vinnie Politan will examine both strategies and make their prediction of what will happen when the jury finishes deliberations.  Get the latest updates on Court TV and CourtTV.com and tune in to see Vinnie Politan and the entire Court TV team review each day’s testimony on Closing Arguments weeknights from 8pm to 11pm.   To see more of our coverage of the Jinx Murder trial closing arguments, click here. The Killing of Ahmaud Arbery Murder Trial – Pre-trial Hearing
2322
We’re just weeks away from the trial of Travis and Gregory McMichael and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan – the three men accused of murdering Ahmaud Arbery.  The prosecution believes the men profiled Arbery and stalked him with trucks and guns until there was a confrontation that left only Arbery dead.  The defense argues that the men were justified under Georgia’s citizen arrest law and were in court last week arguing that they should be able to make the case that Arbery may have been in committing crimes, with little evidence to back that up.  Court TV’s Matt Johnson joins host Vinnie Politan to discuss the defense’s arguments and the prosecution fiery response.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV and CourtTV.com and tune in to see Vinnie Politan and the entire Court TV team review each day’s testimony on Closing Arguments weeknights from 8pm to 11pm.   To see more of our coverage of The Killing of Ahmaud Arbery Murder Trial, click here.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

FL v. Ronnie Oneal: Double Homicide Defendant Represents Himself
2582
The stakes couldn’t be higher for defendant Ronnie Oneal. He’s on trial for double homicide, accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend, his special needs daughter and attempting to kill his seven-year-old son.  Florida prosecutors think the crime merits the death penalty, which makes it all the more remarkable that Ronnie Oneal chose to act as his own lawyer and defend himself. Acting as his own lawyer means he also got to cross examine the state’s star witness, Oneal’s son. Court TV followed the trial and we’ll bring you excerpts of Oneal’s closing arguments as our host Vinnie Politan and famed Jodi Arias defense attorney Kirk Nurmi discuss why the old adage about the man who represents himself has a fool for a client tends to be true.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV and CourtTV.com and tune in to see Vinnie Politan and the entire Court TV team review each day’s testimony on Closing Arguments weeknights from 8pm to 11pm. Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd Updates
2536
Last week there were big hearings for two of the biggest stories of the year and host Vinnie Politan Court TV Anchor Michael Ayala are prepped to break down all of the major developments.  First in Brunswick, Georgia lawyers for the three men charged for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery made arguments to allow Arbery’s past encounters with law enforcement to be used as evidence for the defense.  They also brought into question Arbery’s mental health status.  Should the judge allow this type of evidence into court?  Then in Minneapolis the judge for the upcoming trial of the three remaining officers charged in the death of George Floyd made a shocking decision to delay the trial.  What prompted this change and how could it impact the case going forward?  Get the latest updates on CourtTV and CourtTV.com and tune in to see Vinnie Politan and the entire Court TV team review each day’s testimony on Closing Arguments weeknights from 8pm to 11pm.   For more on our ongoing coverage of The Death of George Floyd Murder trial, click here. Top 5 Stories of 2020
2602
It’s time to look back on 2020 and the top legal stories of the year, which began off with one of the biggest trials of the century – NY v. Harvey Weinstein – only to see courtrooms soon shut down due to the Covid-19 crisis.  What will the long-term impact of the shutdown be on our legal system?  In 2020 we also learned of the grim fates of missing siblings Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow, whose bodies were discovered in the back yard of their mom Lori Vallow’s new husband Chad. But perhaps the biggest legal story of the year was inspired by two men– Georgia’s Ahmaud Arbery and Minnesota’s George Floyd – two men who tragically will killed, igniting an international call for social justice that many hope will change with world for the better for years to come.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.    To see our coverage of the NY v. Kenosha Shooting Suspect Kyle Rittenhouse – Probable Cause Hearing
2294
17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was back in court last week for a probable cause hearing and like every aspect of this story it was divisive.  Probable cause hearings are usually routine proceedings, but Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer took it as an opportunity to set up his defense strategy, which the prosecution and the judge would not allow.  Court TV Legal Correspondent Julia Jenae watched the hearing and will join us with a full report. The hearing was also an opportunity to see the potential angle the prosecution might take – accusing Rittenhouse of “hunting humans” that night in August.  It’s a bold strategy but one attorney and friend of the podcast Ecelynne Mercy agrees with and she’ll tell us why. Bill Cosby – The Appellate Hearing
2400
Bill Cosby, the superstar actor/comedian once dubbed as America’s Dad, has been in a Pennsylvania prison for over two years after his 2018 conviction for sexual assault.  His lawyer say he didn’t get a fair trial and this week went before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to argue their case.  Court TV’s Julie Grant followed that proceeding and will join host Vinnie Politan to walk us through what the arguments Cosby’s defense team made.  One of the core issues revolves around prior bad act witnesses, who shared with the jury their stories of alleged assault at the hands of Cosby.  Is it fair to bring up unprosecuted, unverified stories of past bad behavior to prosecute another crime?  Former federal prosecutor and criminal defense attorney Michael Sterling doesn’t think so and will explain why it’s so important that the court get this decision right – if not for Bill Cosby – than for some other defendant down the road.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.  To see more of our coverage of the Bill Cosby appellate hearing, click here. Ahmaud Arbery Killing – McMichael’s Bond Hearing
2508
Greg and Travis McMichael, the father and son duo accused of taking the law into their own hands and killing 25-year-old jogger Ahmaud Arbery, were back in court last week hoping to be released on bond.  We were there with gavel to gavel coverage for the hearing and Court TV’s Michael Ayala will join the podcast to share what was learned in the dramatic two days of testimony.  The McMichaels are both charged with felony murder – a crime that rarely gets bond, so what was the likelihood of them being successful?  Attorney Lawrence Zimmerman will join Vinnie to share his experience with attempting to get his clients out of jail on bond in the state of Georgia. And Vinnie will share his thoughts on how a series of false perceptions about Ahmaud Arbery is what got the McMichaels into this situation in the first place.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.  To see Court TV’s coverage of the McMichaels’ bond hearing, click here. 2326

There’s no denying this will be a difficult case for prosecutors to win, so should they offer Rittenhouse a plea deal?  Host Vinnie Politan thinks they should, but his guest, former prosecutor Neama Rahmani, say no way and will tell Vinnie why. Doomsday Couple -- Status Update
2136
Doomsday Couple Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell’s first wedding anniversary is fast approaching, but they won’t be spending it together.  Instead they’re in separate jail cells facing charges for their involvement in the deaths of Lori’s children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan.  Court TV’s Chanley Painter has been following this case from the start and will join us with an update – including the latest on a controversial tweet sent by Lori Vallow’s lawyer.  Will this couple go to court together?  Or will one take a plea deal and turn on the other? If prosecutors offer a plea, who gets it? Attorney and friend of the podcast Joshua Schiffer thinks he knows who will get that deal and will tells us why.  Plus host Vinnie Politan will explain why the real danger for the prosecution in this case is the empty chair – the one that would be occupied by Lori’s brother Alex Cox…if he were still alive.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.  To learn more about the twisted story of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell, watch Doomsday Couple: A Court TV Special. George Floyd Killing – 2019 Police Encounter
2498
Due to a recent court filing, we have a clearer picture of how the four former Minneapolis police officers intend to defend themselves for the death of George Floyd – by putting the blame on George Floyd himself.  Court TV’s Michael Ayala will join us to help analyze body camera footage of encounter Floyd had with the police in 2019 – and the remarkable similarities it has with the body camera footage from his deadly encounter with the police earlier this year.  But does the new video help or hurt the defense? And host Vinnie Politan will make a case for taking the emotion out of this case as the best way to seek justice.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.  To see the 2019 police body camera footage of George Floyd’s arrest, click here. Johnny Depp Libel Suit
2112
Courtrooms may be empty across the country, but in England trials have resumed and they are in the middle of a big one – Johnny Depp vs. The Sun.  In 2018, the British tabloid published an article about Depp which described him as a “wife-beater,” referring to allegations from Depp’s ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, that Depp was frequently violent with her when he was impaired by drugs and alcohol.  Johnny Depp denies those claims so he is suing the paper for damages.  Court TV’s Grace Wong has been tracking the case and has all of the details.  The trial highlights the fundamental differences between libel laws in the United States and the UK, but which country gets it right?  Defense lawyer Darryl Cohen is here to make his case for our neighbors across the Atlantic.  And Vinnie will explain how win or lose, this won’t end well for Johnny Depp.  Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.  To see Court TV’s coverage of the closing arguments in Johnny Depp vs. The Sun, click here  Check out the latest podcast series from the Court TV library - Murder and the Menendez Brothers: A Court TV Mystery   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Murder & The Menendez Brothers: A Court TV Mystery - Episode 5: The Confession

Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of sexual abuse and brief offensive language. Listener discretion is advised.  Long before Lyle and Eric Menendez admitted to the world they had killed their parents, they admitted it to someone else – their psychologist Jerome Oziel, who had recorded the brother’s confessions during a therapy session. After a years-long legal battle that went all the way to the California Supreme Court, parts of the confessional tapes were deemed admissible and played for the jurors. The tapes opened the door for another drama to play out in the courtroom – that between Oziel and his former patient- turned-mistress Judalon Smyth, who returns to the Menendez saga as a witness for the defense. George Floyd Killing – Gag Order Imposed
2250
The death of George Floyd, and subsequent criminal charges brought against the Minneapolis police officers involved, caused reverberations around the world, making it one of the most talked about criminal proceedings in recent history. So much so that the judge overseeing the case recently handed down a gag order silencing all involved in the case. Court TV Legal Correspondent Chanley Painter will join Vinnie with the latest on the judge’s ruling. Was the gag order necessary, or even constitutional?  Vinnie’s special guest attorney Randall Kessler thinks so.  But is it too late to put the genie back in the bottle?  Can an impartial jury ever be seated for a case with this much exposure?  If not, does that benefit the prosecution or the defense? Could a man behind on $20,000 in child support really murder his girlfriend, the 3-year-old son they had together and her twin daughters? That’s exactly what prosecutors in Florida are trying to convince a six-person jury that Henry Segura did. But what if there was another explanation? What if the mother of three young children, Brandi Peters, had crossed the wrong people – a drug cartel intent on sending a message to others about what happens when you steal from the cartel? That’s exactly the case the defense will present - backed up by testimony from a convict claiming to be the man who ordered the hit. Prosecutors failed to get a conviction when Segura’s first trial ended in a hung jury. Will they prove their case this time? Vinnie and Seema will break down the entire case and debate the credibility of both theories. They will also preview the next big trial on Court TV – Florida vs. Mark Sievers – a man accused of orchestrating the murder of his own wife.
