Superb writing presented by a rich, gravelly voice. Sound effects are used well, and don't overpower narration. I can see and smell the setting as clearly as if I'd lived there myself. Truly the scariest podcast I've found.

Very nice production. Writing, acting, music is all on point. I get confused about what's happening sometimes but I like that they don't "talk down" to the listener and let you piece some of it together yourself.

Storytelling at its best.

Phenomenal story telling that will get under your skin. Appalachian horror is definitely a niche in some ways, but these stories are spine tingling regardless of where you are from.

Description

In the mountains of central Appalachia, blood runs as deep as these hollers and just as dark. Since before our kind knew these hills, hearts of unknowable hunger and madness have slumbered beneath them. These are the darkest mountains in the world. How dare we think we can break the skin of a god and dig out its heart without bringing forth blood and darkness? Old Gods of Appalachia is a horror-anthology podcast set in the shadows of an Alternate Appalachia, a place where digging too deep into the mines was just the first mistake.

Meet Our Cousins: Afflicted
2:24

Afflicted is a horror thriller audio drama best described as Lovecraft Country meets True Blood, told in an anthology format like American Horror Story.

All seasons will feature characters who use the hoodoo belief system, and a demonic book bound in human flesh that wreaks havoc wherever it goes. Season 1 focuses on a small, East Texas town that suffers impossible natural disasters, and only the town's shunned hoodoo queen can save the town and its citizens, but will the fearful, overly religious citizens ensure their own demise?

Afflicted's creators plan to premiere on Halloween 2022, but only if they can pay everyone a fair wage.

An Interlude: The Scenic Route
29:01

CW: Frank and intimate out of character discussion about the pandemic, death and suicide. In character mentions of child labor, child and parental death and disfigurement.

There is a darkness that can only truly fall in the deep woods. An enveloping shadow of some great beast that is at the same time soothing and terrifying and can only exist in the absence of electric light and full moons. The hours that pass beneath this hallowed veil are usually best spent sleeping so that you do not witness the world that only thrives while the living aren’t in it, unless they are spent by the watchful vigil-keepers who keep that world at bay. Join us for a late night encounter in the deep woods around the Virginia state line.

This is a special alternate episode offered in memorial to Rhonda Kay Dooley and Grey.

Episode 17: The Boy Who Could Not Die
36:33

The ties that bind us to this world are usually fragile things, gossamer strands spun on the looms of great, great grandmamas that we will never meet until our thread is snipped clean. Cowboy held no such ties. These were no mere threads binding this precious boy together, but heavy chains forged from the stygian soil of death itself and tempered in the cold river of eternity.

Episode 15: A Funeral in Pine
29:16

The county had taken a narrow little valley and dug themselves a reservoir to provide drinking water for the whole town and then some. As pretty as the lake and the surrounding woods were, it was still something wedged into nature by the hands of men — water stolen from rivers and collected here like a dragon’s hoard, grounds that had lain untouched for centuries carved up and reshaped to serve human desires, seals broken and reset — all to meet the needs of the encroaching horde of townsfolk and hillfolk alike. Acts such as these have consequences, family.

Episode 14: On Death Island
26:25

Give a group of boys from anywhere a backyard, a stretch of woods, hell, a vacant lot even — and you can watch it rise to a place of hallowed glory. A patch of trees in between houses becomes an ancient battlefield where two sides of some long-remembered, or forgotten, conflict plays out again and again after school hours. An empty, fallow field becomes an arena or tournament ground where rasslin, foot racin and some form of ball-related sport are contested and pushed to the highest form of the game. Friendships and rivalries will rise, fall and be remembered in legend forever and ever. You give a group of boys not yet concerned with matters of what's in their britches just yet a place of their own, and it will outshine Rome in the eyes of its citizens.

Episode 12: The Other Queen
24:39

These yarns were spun to teach you to stay safe and mind common sense, and most importantly, your mama. The stories that get lost though — the ones hardly nobody ever lived to tell — were often just blunt and simple warnings. There is darkness here: fear it. Trust those who can see through it and you might live to see the dawn. Or then again... maybe not.

O Appalachia: mother and maw that births and devours us, roots sunk deep and winding as gnarled hands clasped in prayer, hold us fast and give us foundation. O knotted cage and vine wrought chains O feast of hills and green, that which feeds our hearts but often starves our blood: Hear us now.
