Regulation is an essential component of a healthy, thriving crypto ecosystem. And the legal implications of crypto, DeFi and NFTs sometimes seem as volatile and unpredictable as the price of Bitcoin. And speaking of Bitcoin, it will likely be the world reserve currency at some point, and will certainly be a national reserve to some countries.

So building your digital cash wealth on a solid legal foundation is critical to creating and cultivating sustainable generational wealth with crypto assets. This course helps you make it all make sense so that you can buy, create and leverage crypto assets in a compliant and confident way.

Tech Intersect #81: SPOTLIGHT-Ping The Prof #3-What Every NFT Creative & Collector Should Know about IP
1697

For this week's Tech Intersect spotlight episode, I selected a popular "Ping the Prof" episode about intellectual property rights in the non-fungible token space. What rights an artist creates when she mints, what rights she transfers to an NFT marketplace, how to participate in secondary market sales, what to do if someone creates an unauthorized NFT of your creativity, for example. If you have a question, submit it at hello@techintersectpodcast.com and I will pick some to answer on a future Ping the Prof episode.

Soon, I will be rolling out a regular Ping the Prof "Listen, Learn and Leverage" series on Patreon for deeper dives into your questions and concerns at the intersection of law, business and technology and the future of work, wealth and creativity.  Connect with me via social media or at AdvantageEvans.com to be the first to know when the series rolls out.

Tech Intersect #80: Robert Greenfield IV: The Emerging Impact of Crypto and Open Banking in a Decentralized World
2487

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I chat with Robert Greenfield IV. the President and CEO of Emerging Impact, a benefit corporation that supports major NGOs and government agencies leveraging emerging technology in humanitarian aid and welfare programming.

Robby’s blockchain experience dates back to 2011. Prior to developing Emerging Impact, Robert founded ConsenSys Social Impact, the social and public sector practice of the world's leading blockchain venture studio and served as the firm's Head of Social Impact. He also co-founded the Blockchain for Social Impact Coalition, has over 8 years of software engineering, product management and program development experience and has worked directly with the likes of U.S. State Department, the World Bank, and Oxfam International and many more.

We explore what it means to leverage blockchain’s distributed ledger technology and cryptocurrencies to modernize financial services in emerging markets, the needs of emerging markets and how the crypto industry might replicate the ills of the current system if it’s not intentional about empowering rather than exploiting, why crypto use is booming in countries like Nigeria despite regulatory bans and the mindset shift required to create generational wealth for marginalized communities not only as investors but also creators.

Tech Intersect #77: Cleve Mesidor-The Little Crypto Amendment to the Infrastructure Bill that Could
2779

Title: In this episode of Tech Intersect, I reconnect with Cleve Mesidor, She is the founder and fearless leader of the National Policy Network of Women of Color in Blockchain, Policy Advisor to the Blockchain Association, and author of a memoir, The CLEVOLUTION.

In episode 26, we had an authentic and empowering conversation about race, crypto, and financial inclusion. We explored the importance of education in black and brown communities by dramatically reducing barriers to entry and participation. And we also explored the importance of the lessons of freedom from Juneteenth as context for the broader conversation of economic empowerment.

In this time around, we decided to capture our real time reflections on the bipartisan compromise to a crypto tax provision in the Senate’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill after a vote on Monday, August 9th.  U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced the compromise involving Democrats, Republicans and the Treasury Department earlier in the day, saying it would exempt crypto transaction validators from a broadened definition of “broker.”  One Senator stood in the way and blocked unanimous consent over an unrelated topic. But the industry showed strength and community.  We live to fight another day on the House side soon.

Tech Intersect #75: Ping the Prof- Will PA Be the Next State to Create a Blockchain Regulatory Sandbox?
1141

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I share my testimony summary from PA State Rep. Napoleon Nelson's July 19th House Democratic Policy Committee hearing "Blockchain and Cryptocurrency and preparing Pennsylvania for a digital future." The Committee was short on time and I wasn’t able to deliver my full prepared remarks so I’d like to take the opportunity to do that in this episode. The full hearing replay and my written testimony are linked below.

I commend Rep. Nelson for convening this hearing to explore the potential benefits, challenges, and drawbacks of integrating blockchain technology and crypto assets into the public, private and charitable sectors of the Commonwealth and welcoming blockchain-based and crypto startups to the Commonwealth. It is essential for government officials to identify and to consider the myriad local, national, and international policy issues associated with achieving the optimal balance between cultivating a robust, competitive and transparent regulatory environment that also supports and encourages innovation in this fast-paced digital world. This is particularly important at this moment in history as we emerge from the economic ravages of the pandemic, especially for those citizens historically and systemically marginalized and disenfranchised in the current financial and technology sectors.

Tech Intersect #74: Vince McPhillip-Turn Your "Knomad" Knowledge into Wealth in a Digital World
2247

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I welcome Vince McPhillip, founder of Knomad and former co-founder and Head of Community at Pi Network. He founded Knomad in 2018 to help people find more flexible and meaningful work. He was inspired to launch Knomad as a “flash consultancy” to pair students with cryptocurrency projects after reading an article titled "Expert Crowdsourcing" while he was in business school. And although he says it was really hard challenging work, he focused on the promising signs of the magic that arises when people from different backgrounds come together to solve hard problems.

Fast forward to the present moment, now more people than ever are looking for greater autonomy, meaning, and financial reward in their work. Vince believes that every single person has inherent wisdom to share, irrespective of background or geographical borders. So Vince is building a global knowledge marketplace where people can trade expertise. By doing so, Knomad hopes to create alternative economies where Knomads can turn their knowledge into wealth.

Tech Intersect #72: Carmelle Cadet and EMTECH-Bridging the Financial Inclusion Divide between CeFI and DeFI
2141

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I welcome founder and CEO of EMTECH, Carmelle Cadet. She describes the company as a Modern Central Bank Technology Company.

Carmelle is an experienced Finance and Business Leader in the Enterprise IT sector, with specializations in the Financial Services and Blockchain Technologies. She is also a passionate advocate for financial inclusion, economic development, and a former Finance and Business Executive at IBM. She’s one of the most dynamic and influential black women in blockchain so I’m really excited to share our conversation about the critical role vanguards like Carmelle play in increasing financial inclusion and equity, by, for example, lowering the cost of cross border payments.

There are many paths to mass adoption of DeFi and Carmelle is well on her way to help the current financial system embrace and leverage blockchain protocols in a way that includes and empowers us all.

Tech Intersect #71: Will Damon's NFT Hopes Be Dashed by NYSD, Roc-a-Fella and Jay-Z?
3654

In this special episode of Tech Intersect, I share a replay of my weekly ListenToBlackWomen.com show with co-host Shontavia Johnson, Esq., an IP lawyer, academic and my business partner at LIT Braintrust, LLC.

We cover the NFT beef between Dame Dash and Roc-a-fella Records (RAF). On June 18th, RAF filed a complaint in federal district court in New York against Dash  to prevent him from auctioning an NFT of the copyright in Jay-Z’s iconic album, Reasonable Doubt via a little-known minting and farming platform, SuperFarm.

This case involves NFTs and copyrights but it’s mostly a corporate law case. On July 1, Inner City Press live tweeted the Show Cause hearing where Dash's lawyer asked that the preliminary injunction be limited to the album, not a hologram of his corp. interest. RAF's counsel requested a permanent injunction.  What a mess! How do you think this case will end? Tweet me your thoughts @IPProfTevans.

SPOTLIGHT: Tech Intersect #70: Andre Oshea-G.R.O.W.ing your NFT Art Business on the Blockchain
3233

While I am taking a much-needed pause to recuperate from the academic year that was also a pandemic (and grade these papers and exams!), I want to share one of the most popular and timely episodes this year; my conversation with the inimitable Andre Oshea. He is self-described as a 3D animator building the future. That is all true. But he is so much more. He's a visionary, an advocate, an activist and someone who always lifts as he climbs. Translation? He's a real one. And one of my favorite artists and humans in the creative NFT space and beyond.

Tech Intersect #69: Dave Rodman, Esq.-The Past, Present and Future of Cannabis & Crypto Law
2478

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I welcome attorney Dave Rodman to the show. Dave founded the Rodman Law Group in 2014 in response to what he saw as a lack of sophisticated corporate/business law firms serving the cannabis industry because most dealt only on the criminal side and defense work. From that moment he found his own lane, in fact her created it. And he has been tirelessly advocating for his clients, pushing for more equitable and transparent industry regulations, and facilitating complex multinational transactions ever since.
Dave's unique background in finance, securities, intellectual property, and corporate law has given him an incredibly diverse set of tools to deploy on behalf of his clients, tools that allow him to craft solutions to each client’s specific legal, business, and regulatory needs. And he definitely does not believe in a “one size fits all” approach to the law. He is one of the only lawyers in the world with active clients in both the cannabis and cryptocurrency/blockchain markets. And at the end of this episode, we touch on decentralized autonomous organizations, NFTs and securities. This legal eagle episode packs a punch and you’ll surely learn something new. I know I did!

Tech Intersect #62: Ping the Prof #4-The NFT Minting Fine Print: Read Those Marketplace Terms and Conditions
931

In this episode, I provide an overview of general Terms and Conditions of NFT minting and marketing platforms that you should expect, specifically related to intellectual property and royalties. Bottom line: Read the fine print! One of the benefits and features of minting is creating a record of creation and ownership that cannot be changed—immutable—so if you get it wrong in the beginning … well, it’s not like you can call customer service to roll it back. Contrary to some critics, this space is not a bubble. In fact, NFT coding standards like ERC-721 have been around since 2017 (and the idea of smart contracts dates back to 1997)! But the hype cycle and FOMO is real. Take your time, get informed. Take off your creative cap and put on your business hat during this episode to get clear, get focused and get in the game.

Tech Intersect #61: Ping The Prof #3-What Every NFT Creative & Collector Should Know about IP
1505

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I do a third topic-specific episode because my inbox and DMs are overflowing and speaker requests are at an all-time high. And I’ve received so many questions about intellectual property and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and I’ve heard so much misinformation on social media, especially on Clubhouse, that I had to take a moment to share some IP basics to help creatives and collectors make sense of it all. And to help you steer clear of the noise. For example, a telltale sign that you’re about to get bad legal advice? It usually begins with “I’m not a (an IP) lawyer but …”. In this ep, I explain the different types of IP, take a closer look at copyright and fair use, and what rights creatives transfer and what buyers acquire in an NFT sale? Bottom line: let the NFT creator or investor be wise and BEWARE! Follow, like, comment and share. And let’s connect @IPProfEvans & #EvansontheBlock.

Tech Intersect #60: Gafacci-An Artist’s Epic Journey from Juju Music Roots to “Nii” & NFTs
2352

In this episode, I speak with Gafacci, a renowned Ghanaian artist and visionary, whose productions naturally include an adventurous afro twist with strong influences of electronic music. It's in his DNA. His interest in music was nurtured by his father, a former band member of ‘Juju’ music legend ‘Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey’. He has earned great recognition among several excellent artists who quickly involved Gafacci in production sessions in and outside Africa. He is also the brain behind the Jowaa project, where he produced several popular tracks including #1 downloaded bass track on Juno in 2017 and toured around the world.

He is now experimenting with non-fungible tokens as an NFT crypto artist releasing the first Ghanaian space exploration series starring "Nii" the red cockerel in collaboration with Ghana’s renowned satirical artist, Bright Ackwerh. In our conversation, Gafacci shares his journey through the world of cryptocurrencies to crypto art, his creation process and selection of platforms as well as some of the pitfalls. And he and his manager, Yussef, share how Gafacci uses music and technology to advance his philanthropic goals throughout the Diaspora.

Tech Intersect #59: Ping the Prof #2-Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Copyright and Empowering Crypto Creatives
1074

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I do another Ping the Prof session on the NFT craze from a POV not often covered: the legal issues crypto creatives need to be aware of and consider when engaging in this exciting opportunity to leverage blockchain, smart contracts and non-fungible tokens to create unique, rare and scarce digital assets, connect directly with your fan base, participate in primary and downstream secondary markets seamlessly and win in Web 3.0. This is particularly important for black and brown creatives, often exploited and marginalized by the entertainment, art and sports worlds. In this series of eps devoted to the topic of NFT creativity, I will have compelling conversations with crypto creatives, platform owners and community leaders.

And I'll also cover:

  • copyright and other forms of intellectual property
  • fair use of protected works, collage and "transformative use"
  • right of publicity
  • persistent proof of ownership
  • immutable chain of transfer
  • digital rights and content management
  • digital first sale to counter license culture
  • self-executing payments
  • access controls
  • self-executing enforcement
  • increased value over time created by digital scarcity

Let me know what you'd like to learn more about and who you'd like to hear more from. And invite me to a Clubhouse stage and let's talk live and direct! @IPProfEvans @AtTechIntersect

1899

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I introduce a new segment, Ping the Prof where I answer your questions, talk hot topics and current events and give you some action items to listen, learn and leverage your way into shining success in the future of money, work and entrepreneurship. This episode introduces "DCA meets BTD" (how dollar-cost averaging + a regular commitment to buying when price dips occur) can have a profound impact on those who HODL (aka hold) (buy and hold cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin). I also talk about Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's recent comments about a US digital dollar and Tether/Bitfinex's 18.5M settlement with NYAG Leticia James.

I also give a shoutout to Black Bitcoin Billionaires creators Isaiah "Bitcoin Zay" Jackson and Lamar Wilson and MLB player-turned-artist Micah Johnson's epic NFT crypto art auction for his "Aku" creations.

And I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. Perfect for Black History Month and anytime you want to learn (or be reminded) why economic empowerment and financial inclusion are essential and how they can be found in the future of money.

Tech Intersect #53: Tavonia Evans-Leveraging Defi and Data for Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion
1972

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I connect with Tavonia Evans of the GUAP Foundation and and creator of GUAPCoin.

Tavonia Evans is a data scientist, mother of 8, and entrepreneur. After starting her company Safe2Meet, a peer-to-peer identity verification platform, she sought investment in 2015. But over the course of her experience, she learned than less than 1 percent of venture funding goes to Black female founders.

This realization, along with her struggle to secure funding, inspired Tavonia to create a product that specifically serves the interests of the Black community. So she started GUAP Coin in 2017 to help the community maintain wealth and encourage participation in the Black economy.

But GUAP Coin isn’t just about financial prosperity. Tavonia understood early on how valuable data can be, and the role it can play in eliminating economic disparity. With blockchain and cryptocurrency, GUAP can dispel the myth of the “disappearing dollar” with a wealth of data that demonstrates the potential growth factor not just to coin holders, but to future enterprises and investors in Black businesses.

1714

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I welcome Arlan Hamilton BACK to Tech Intersect. Arlan is the Founder and Managing Partner of Backstage Capital, a venture capital firm dedicated to minimizing funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are people of color, women, and/or LGBT. Started from scratch in 2015, Backstage has now raised more than $12 million and invested in more than 150 startup companies led by underestimated founders. In 2018, they launched a four-city accelerator program in Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, and London. Arlan has been featured on the cover of Fast Company magazine as the first Black woman non-celebrity to do so, and is the author of “It’s About Damn Time” and host of the weekly podcast “Your First Million”. Arlan and her mother, Mrs. Earline Butler-Sims, announced their scholarship program which kicked-off with scholarships for Black students at Oxford University and HBCU Dillard University.

When Arlan was last here, we were talking about the release of It’s About Damn Time. Arlan is back to talk about Arlan’s Academy and I am thrilled to be one of the instructors in this dynamic team of subject matter experts.

Tech Intersect #49: A. Walton Smith-Using the Power of Online Communities to Amplify Black Woman-Owned Excellence
2486

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I have the great pleasure of connecting with A. Walton Smith, the Garden Architect at We Are Rosie, charged with the important task of developing and managing their community of 6k+ consultants (aka Rosies) across the globe.

Walton is also the Founder of Black Woman Owned. An online community created to give Black Woman Owned businesses visibility through social media as a means to increase their revenue.

I love Walton’s origin story for Black Woman Owned and also very excited about what’s in store for the platform in 2021 and beyond. We’ve never needed online communities and engagement more than we do right now. That’s why the work of Naj Austin, who I plan to have on the show soon, and Walton are so very important. Essential, really. To connect business owners with clients and customers with an eye on the prize of creating wealth that endures through the generations. It starts with being intentional about how we spend our time, talents and treasures. About re-circulating dollars, creating a solid foundation and offering lots of space and grace in the process.

And don’t forget that third word. PACE. Pace yourself! This is a marathon, not a sprint. Listen to Walton’s hype girl message whenever you need to remember who you are and WHOSE you are. It’s YOU, sis. It’s yooooou.

Tech Intersect 44: Akin Sawyerr-Are Blockchains & Defi Lending the New Esusu Wealth-Building Model? Lessons from Nigeria
2310

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I chat with Akin Sawyerr, Managing Director of Feleman Limited, a venture advisory firm focused on leveraging Blockchain technology to create value in underserved communities. Akin also serves in a Strategy & Operations leadership role with Barnbridge, a derivatives protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. Previously, Akin served as the Strategy and Africa Lead for Decred. Before that spent fifteen years in management consulting and Fortune 500 corps. He led strategic and organization transformation projects at Booz Allen Hamilton and Accenture and held leadership positions with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

And to add to this impressive list of credentials, Akin began his career at the International Monetary Fund in the Technology and General Services Group where he conducted economic research and data analysis in support of IMF country strategies across Africa, Asia and Europe.

We discussed the current state of the crypto ecosystem, the future money and work in the US and abroad on the continent of Africa and where we go from here. Specifically, we talk about Nigeria as a case study for how distrust in a political and financial system can lead to a shift where citizens opt-out to adopt other self-custody value transfer options. For example, esusus (informal lending groups) are a popular means to create and protect wealth based on familial relationships or affinity groups, create a community of trust and honor that is “off the books”  In the case of esusus, they are not digitized. They are IRL cultural norms. But if they were digitized … perhaps they’d look A LOT like blockchain communities.

We explore what it would look like to digitize cooperative economics for the unbanked, underbanked and those who want an alternative hedge against government-issued money (aka fiat).

Tech Intersect #41: Sherrell Dorsey-Storytelling and Trends in the Future-Forward Black Innovation Economy
2587

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I speak with Sherrell Dorsey, a data journalist, social entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of The Plug, a distinctive, Black tech news and insights platform covering Black innovators in tech, venture capital, future of work policy, and more. Sherrell has scaled her new media startup to thousands of subscribers, hundreds of paid members and she’s raised over $500,000 in equity-free capital. Amazing.

Sherrell shares her poignant personal journey, how she’s been doing in the midst of the devastating impacts of the pandemic, and her phenomenal professional ascension … from working for designers and content marketing firms at the intersection of commerce and social media to finding her true shine in tech journalism. She’s contributed to Fast Company, The Root, Next City, and many others.

And recently, she launched a season one of The Clark Street Project, A narrative episodic podcast that details the evolution of Black business news and entrepreneurship coverage and the journalists who’ve led the charge. One of the most empowering moments to listen out for is when Sherrell reminds us that the pandemic hasn’t changed the mission for Black innovators and entrepreneurs. And she offers some strategies for not only surviving but thriving as we prepare for the fourth industrial revolution and future of work in the tech world.

If you’re listening to this on the release date, November 3rd, 2020, then I hope you’ve already voted, are on your way, or are in line and listening to pass the time. Get. Out. And. Vote. Our collective future depends on our individual participation in democracy. Let’s make anyone who’s ever been disenfranchised proud.

Tech Intersect #40: Leigh Cuen-Crypto Journalism Meets "Thirst Trap" NFT Creativity
1911

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I chat with Leigh Cuen is a tech reporter covering blockchain technology for publications such as Coindesk, Newsweek Japan, International Business Times and Racked. Her work has also been published by Teen Vogue, Al Jazeera English, The Jerusalem Post, Mic, and Salon.

I invited Leigh on to talk about some of the latest topics and trends she is covering in the blockchain and crypto spaces and we spent a lot of time exploring the boom of thirst traps (aka sexy selfies) and feminist GIFs because they are selling like hotcakes on non-fungible token (NFT) markets, but-of course-not everyone is thrilled about this trend.

Leigh was challenged by the topic at first but through her reporting has come to appreciate the self-actualizing creative and final power born out of this unique way of levering NFTs. This is a must-listen episode to be sure!

Tech Intersect #38: Manasi Vora-Sia, Skynet and the Power of Decentralized Cloud Storage
1978

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I chat with Manasi Vora. She is the VP of Strategy and Operations at Sia where she focuses on privacy-based cloud storage products. She is also the Founder of Women in Blockchain Boston with a mission to break down barriers to entry for underrepresented group and to increase gender diversity within the blockchain industry.

Prior to joining Sia, Manasi conducted research at the MIT Media Lab's Digital Currency Initiative and was the Director of MIT Bitcoin Expo. She held multiple roles on Wall Street before falling down the proverbial Crypto rabbit hole.

Manasi reminds us that there is indeed a lane for everyone in this new digital economy. And everyone includes women and people of color and those in historically underrepresented and underestimated groups. She shares the importance of women and POC in STEM fields and in blockchain/crypto, speficially, what Sia and Skynet are and how you can get started quickly and easily, and how excited she is (and we all should be) about the future of decentralized file storage in a web 3.0 world.

Tech Intersect #34: Brian Avello-The Future of Law, DAOs and DeFi
1836

In this episode, MakerDAO general counsel Brian Avello and I explore the secrets to success for future lawyers and current lawyers interested in pivoting to represent clients involved in blockchain, cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (or “defi”). This is also an important episode for anyone who wants to better understand the legal landscape in the crypto space.

And he also shares his take on some of the most pressing legal issues in defi and crypto today and in the future, including regulation by a number of regulatory bodies like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Commodity Futures Trade Commission (CFTC), Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Tech Intersect #33: Host Advantage 1-Tonya M. Evans Shares How (and why!) to Go From Cash to Crypto Safely, Legally and Confidently
3152

In this episode, I take a detour from regularly scheduled guest interviews to share with you an excerpt from my Advantage Evans Academy course, From Cash to Crypto. Since launching this three-week online small group coaching intensive, I have received lots of fantastic questions about the digital cash economy, Bitcoin, blockchain and what it all means. I've also heard the misinformation and disinformation about cryptocurrency. Spoiler alert: it ISN'T all about the dark web or criminals.

If you believe cryptocurrency is too complicated, too confusing and WAY too risky, this episode and my course are for you. Because just three years ago, I thought the same way. But I’ve worked hard to make it all make sense so you don’t have to.

I’ve done the heavy lifting through the jargon and fringy buzz words to demystify and clarify how to participate fully in a supportive, inclusive environment. I want to share what I’ve learned with YOU!

Tech Intersect #32: Jumoke Dada-Technologists Come in All HUEs
1872

In this episode, I welcome Jumoke Dada. Jumoke is a forward-thinking individual with a proven track record for solving problems and supporting women and girls in tech and in life. Her professional career spans 15+ years and includes working in corporate information technology as an application developer, business/systems analyst, and project manager even though wasn’t drawn to STEM until college.

In addition to being a trained technologist, she has a knack for strategic marketing and a deep and abiding interest in entrepreneurship best expressed through her company, Signature RED, which provides technology and strategy consulting services. She also runs Project ALOE, a beauty drive and send-off event for college-bound girls under the 501(c)3 arm of her company, Signature RED Cares 501(c)3. And she hosts one of the best tech conferences in the world for women of color. In sum,  She and her work are some kind of wonderful.

There are many gems and lessons in this episode about thriving in the tech space and in life. One of the most important words of wisdom is that you can be multi-faceted or a “late bloomer” in tech and still be right on time. Jumoke found a way to combine tech, marketing, event planning and philanthropy to create opportunities for herself and other women to connect, galvanize, and elevate together.

Tech Intersect #31: Kelly Knight-Reimagining the Future for Black Women & Girls in CSI and STEM
2568

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I speak with Professor Kelly Knight. Professor Knight is an assistant professor with the George Mason University Forensic Science Program and also a STEM Accelerator. As a STEM Accelerator, she guides and mentors undergraduate students in the Forensic Science Program and coordinates K-12 STEM outreach including the Females of Color and those Underrepresented in STEM summer programs for middle and high school girls. She has such an interesting background and really impressive expertise in the challenging, dynamic field of forensic science, which encompasses many fields and disciplines related to the application of science to the law.

We talk about what forensic science IS (and isn’t). She dispels myths about crime science investigations, especially given the popularity of CSI shows, the pain points and career opportunities for black women in STEM and in academia and the future of CSI and how technology is improving capabilities so that students of today, especially black and brown women and girls, can prepare for the careers of the future. NO more hidden figures!

This episode of the Tech Intersect Podcast marks a major milestone ... my 30th episode! {cue the marching band and confetti!} This show is part passion project and part edutainment opportunity to explore and celebrate the future of money, entrepreneurship and work in the fourth industrial revolution. Tech Intersect #29: Tony Zanders-Reimagining and Reskilling for the Library of the Future
1450

In this episode, I speak with library-of-the-future software veteran Tony Zanders who is also founder and CEO of SkillType, a company and product Tony created to help people to increase their industry-relevant skills and credentials and also to help libraries and information professionals with job skill analysis and development. The ultimate goal is to “future-proof” the information industry and remove the unnecessary dividing line between education, upskilling and work. Skilltype is reimaginging professional development and it’s not a moment too soon.

Access to information and the ability to upskill and reskill virtually is critically important. The pandemic has definitely shined a light on this reality. Employers are now returning to training their workforce.  So Tony has positioned Skilltype to leverage that need in order to empower the information professionals industry on both sides of the education vs work divide. Skilltype is in Beta right now. So catch this amazing project on the way up! Drop a comment and let me know what you think about this episode and the future of work.

Tech Intersect #27: Mitchell Earl-The Secret to Professional Success? Don’t Do Stuff You HATE!
2049

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I speak with Mitchell Earl, COO of Praxis – a business bootcamp and job placement program for entrepreneurial young professionals who want more than college. He's the author of Don’t Do Stuff You Hate. Previsously, he’s served as Marketing Director at a career-launch startup.  Chief of Staff at an accounting tech startup. And waaay back in the day, he was an early employee at a media startup.

Mitchell’s belief that “it’s difficult to find real success unless you prioritize fulfillment,” is the absolute truth. Successfully earning a great income, building wealth, mastering a skill, earning a credential? Whose are all important, tobe sure. But ultimately the intrinsic achievements of making a difference, following your passions, and using your talents is where were true fulfillment and peace is found. There is something for everyone in this episode. Enjoy!

Tech Intersect #26: Cleve Mesidor-Reflections on Juneteenth, Crypto and the Future of Financial Freedom
1955

In this episode of Tech Intersect, I speak with Cleve Mesidor, founder of LOGOS, the first decentralized social platform exclusively for activists. Logos leverages blockchain technology to deliver a decentralized, secure, protected network - ensuring trolls and their fake profiles are barred and provocative works are not censored. This unique, peer to peer experience seeks to empower disruptors to reach contemporaries globally and make meaningful connections to support positive social evolution and equality.

Previously, Cleve served as an Obama Presidential Appointee, working as Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, where she was charged with promoting White House economic programs and national public-private partnerships to advance innovation and entrepreneurship.

In this episode, we have an authentic and empowering conversation about race, crypto, and financial inclusion. We explore the importance of education in black and brown communities by dramatically reducing barriers to entry and participation. And we also explore the importance of the lessons of freedom from Juneteenth as context for the broader conversation of economic empowerment. I know you’ll learn a lot. And I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it.

Tech Intersect #15: Drew Hinkes: Cryptocurrency Lawyers Talk Regulation and Innovation
2725

In this episode, I welcome Andrew Hinkes, an attorney with Miami-based law firm Carlton Fields working in the firm's National Blockchain and Digital Currency practice. He is also a co-founder and the General Counsel of Athena Blockchain, a professional services firm focused on tokenized investments.

We discuss what Bitcoin and blockchain are, about other cryptocurrencies including stablecoins and government issued digital fiat, and regulations and regulators in the United States and around the world, given that public, permissionless blockchains--the rails that support the issuance of many cryptographically-secured tokens of value--are borderless. We also talk about what a "crypto lawyer" is and does.

Previously nominated as one of Coindesk’s Most Influential People in Blockchain in 2017, Drew is frequently quoted and cited in articles related digital assets and blockchain technology, and regularly speaks at legal, industry, and academic conferences. Drew’s areas of expertise focus on legal and business issues related to public network cryptocurrency systems, decentralized system governance, and legal and ethical issues related to cryptocurrency systems. Time to LISTEN, LEARN and LEVERAGE. So let’s get started.

Tech Intersect #14: Stephanie Humphrey: Best Practices for Managing Your Digital Brand
2914
In this episode, I welcome Technology & Lifestyle Expert Stephanie 'Tech Life Steph' Humphrey to the show. She is a former engineer-turned-media personality, the technology contributor for ABC News, and you may have seen her regular segments on the nationally-syndicated daytime show 'Strahan, Sara and Keke' and founder of Til Death Do You Tweet, an educational series she delivers to students, parents, schools and businesses. Stephanie has a long and impressive history in technology and media, but she is most passionate about helping people, especially children, to become better digital citizens. We cover exactly what that means and how to utilize technology responsibly and safely.

This episode is particularly relevant now that so many of us have transitioned to "work-from-home" status due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. So many people are now forced to leverage the Internet to work, play and connect. Stephanie helps us do so responsibility and safely.

Tech Intersect #13: Kailei Carr-The Future of Inclusive C-Suite Leadership in Tech
2027

In this episode of Tech Intersect™, I have a rich and engaging conversation with Kailei Carr. She’s the CEO of The Asbury Group, LLC, and she advises executive and executive-bound women on their executive image, presence and brand. Her podcast, Beyond the Business Suit, provides insider “tips of the trade” for successful women in business and beyond. She is also the Director of the Emerge Academy, a one-year program specifically designed for women of color in technology.

The future of work includes the future of leadership in a Web 3.0 world. And the executive path to the C-Suite is—like every area of business—being disrupted by technology, both in terms of increased opportunities for diverse voices and representation at the C-Suite table. You must be in a constant state of evolution to ensure preparation will meet opportunity in the new economy. Kailei reminds us about the importance of developing leadership skills—especially the importance of using one’s existing expertise to participate in the new economy that is data, innovation and technology driven. And she also reminds us that self-care, especially for women and people of color, is not a luxury; self-care is essential. And that’s why her Beyond the Business Suit Retreat is so popular and well-received and restorative.

We recorded this conversation before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the entire world. She decided, out of an abundance of caution, to reschedule the retreat. She confirmed that the TECH2020 discount for $200 off of registration will still apply when the new dates are confirmed here

Tech Intersect #12: Dawn Dickson-A Message to Founders: Know Your Purpose, Your People, and Your Power
2166
She is a "light worker", tech mogul, and founder/CEO of PopCom, an automated retail company that uses artificial intelligence, blockchain and other Web 3.0 technologies to help retailers collect and leverage valuable customer insights through smart vending technology. Her ventures include Flat Out of HeelsLifestyle Cafe, and PopCom, a software as a service company, after identifying a need to make vending machines more intelligent.

Dawn reminds us in this episode that only solutions scale.  And also that who you build with is often more important than the solution. Without the right people by your side, many a great solution will die on the vine. And finally, she reminds us to have a “me first” mentality and know your power. This “me first power” isn’t selfish but self FULL. Because empty cups don’t overflow. And empty vessels certainly can’t fill others.

This is a really info-rich and high energy conversation that focuses on three areas to empower founders: knowing your purpose, your people, and your POWER. So buckle up! It’s gonna be an amazing ride. Time to listen, learn, and leverage.

Tech Intersect #11: Anne T. Griffin-The Business Value of Diverse Voices in Web 3.0 Product Management
2599
In this episode, I welcome Anne T. Griffin, a human and product manager, in that order (as she says), who studied engineering at the University of Michigan. She is passionate about the human aspects of technology and building machine learning and AI products rooted in the realities of the human experience. She is also an Emerging Tech Correspondent for Tech2025, a platform and community for learning about, and discussing emerging technologies such as AI. Tech2025, incidentally, company founded by another Tech Intersect Guest, Charlie Oliver—so listen to ep 4 to hear my conversation with Charlie about the future of technology.

Anne’s current focus is on exploring what "fairness" means at a product level and how teams can integrate empathy and awareness of the impact of bias into the creative and development process. She has worked with major companies such as Microsoft, Mercedes-Benz, American Express, Comcast, and Colgate-Palmolive. So her background and expertise make her uniquely qualified for the work she does today.

Anne shares her origin story, thoughts on some of the most promising technologies in the Web 3.0 build, the most pressing challenges and concerns about bias in the build of Web 3.0. We talk also talk solutions and the imperative for inclusion to ensure there are diverse people with diverse perspectives and talents at the laptop as we usher in the fourth industrial revolution.

Tech Intersect #10: Chris Odinet-Alternative Data & Bias in AI-based Consumer Lending
2576
In this episode of Tech Intersect, I welcome Professor Christopher K. Odinet to discuss his recent work in crypto lending and consumer data that explores the potentially discriminatory impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning on fintech lending. We talk about consumer lending, inclusion and social impact as Web 3.0 technologies like AI and machine learning usher in tech companies that act more like banks engaging in more banking-like things than pure tech companies do, especially for small unsecured consumer loans. The reason? Household debt is higher today than it has ever been in history (mortgage, car, student loans).

The borrowed amounts tend to be lower even though household incomes are up. FinTech lenders are providing small dollar, short term loans to make middle American ends meet. And while some define “middle class” by income and others by lifestyle, perhaps another definition involves access to credit that often leads to a lifetime of debt. A stranglehold for most people trying to live the American dream. And huge, evergreen profits for tech companies getting into the lending business for unsecured, personal consumer loans. Questions persist, about how the law should deal with the problems these newcomers experience that might be similar to the issues that banks deal with and, because it isn’t all doom and gloom, how these tech companies might be different. Tune in and tweet me @AtTechIntersect so we can listen, learn and leverage together.

Chris Odinet is an associate professor of law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law and is an affiliate faculty member with the Tom E. Love Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in the University of Oklahoma Price College of Business.

Shehan Chandrasekera is one of only a handful of CPAs in the country who is a subject matter expert on cryptocurrency taxes. He is a published author, CPA Continuing Professional Education instructor and a frequent technical contributor to various social media platforms. He was one of the first CPAs to have a published academic article on cryptocurrency taxation. He joined the CoinTracker team as the Head of Tax Strategy to improve the CPA user experience and to accelerate industry outreach. In addition to his role with CoinTracker, Shehan also leads a Technology & Startup in Houston and serves as the Associate Director for the Houston Blockchain Alliance.

Cryptocurrency tax rules vary from country-to-country. For this episode, we focus on the United States, but crypto is global so if you have taxable events in other countries, you’ll need to become familiar with those laws as well. Tech Intersect #7: Alan Silberberg-Bots, Blockchain and the Politics of Cyber Attacks
2096
In this episode of the Tech Intersect™ Podcast, Tonya speaks with cybersecurity expert, and Digijaks founder and CEO, Alan W. Silberberg. Alan has a 25-year background in national politics and technology. He was even instrumental in analyzing the Democratic National Convention email hack that led to the Wikileaks release of 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments from the top of the US DNC. He speaks and advises on the dangers of social media being used for propaganda and has written dozens of articles about weaponized information, which he also writes about in his book, Bots Against US: The Ongoing Information War Against the United States. This topic is especially relevant in this 2020 election cycle. It’s also a topic I speak about in the Elect Tech 2020 session at South by Southwest 2020 in Austin.

Every person, government and businesses is at risk of falling victim to a cyberattack. And, as Alan explains, security on the internet of things is completely non-existent. And then there’s the threat to our political system with coordinated political propaganda bots working to create instability in the US elections and the political system at large. Time to listen, learn and leverage™.

Tech Intersect #6: Anthony Ware-Helping Founders Balance Mental Health and Wealth
2064
In this episode, I chat with entrepreneur and mental health and wealth expert, Anthony Ware. Anthony’s business, Aware Catalysts, focuses on—among other things— a program called Founder Mental Wealth, which helps underestimated and underrepresented entrepreneurs to decrease burnout and improve business outcomes. His mission is to help create a world of new generational wealth: mind, body, spirit, time, and money.

Anthony shares a lot of wisdom in this episode in addition to his touching origin story and also his important evolution story from his original mindset that money = stuff = happiness to a more grounded focus on how a founder’s emotional well being drives culture and that drives long-term mental and financial wins or challenges.

Mental and emotional challenges, certainly experienced by all founders, are experienced even more acutely by those who are underrepresented and marginalized. I will drop a link in the full show notes to the report Anthony and I discussed and also provide other resources to support founders in the journey toward mental health and financial freedom.

We leave you with some lifework. Make a list, make a plan, and then execute that plan by making sure you always pay yourself FIRST. Not just with bank deposits but with mental WEALTH deposits.

Tech Intersect #3: Andreas Antonopoulos-Bitcoin for the other 6 Billion and Amplifying Inclusion in Blockchain
3097
In this episode, I speak with Andreas Antonopoulos, a best-selling author, speaker, educator, and one of the world’s foremost bitcoin and open blockchain experts. He is known for delivering electric talks that combine economics, psychology, technology, and game theory with current events, personal anecdote, and historical precedent effortlessly transliterating the complex issues of blockchain technology out of the abstract and into the real world.

We covered at a high level, what blockchain is and, as the first application of blockchain technology, what Bitcoin is and the history of digital cash that predates Bitcoin.

We also covered how crypto is regulated by the code itself and how crypto protocols are “rules without rulers”, why Bitcoin has endured for over ten years, the difference between public systems like Bitcoin and private systems like Facebook’s LibraCoin, tokenizing real world assets and the role that cryptocurrencies will have for “the other 6 billion” people in the world who do not currently benefit from the financial status quo.

Finally, Andreas and I discussed a recent tweet storm in response to his “intentionally provocative” tweet inviting suggestions for diverse podcasts to appear on in the blockchain space after being dismayed by the number of  "white, American man in finance" suggestions he’d already received to an earlier inquiry. He shared his insights on race, gender, the myth of meritocracy and what he describes as the “dominance of the mediocre” in the crypto ecosystem.

In the end, he accomplished his goal. To find podcasts like Tech Intersect to engage in conversation about the past, present, and hope for cryptocurrencies and open blockchains. This episode is sure to provoke lots of thought and conversation.

Tech Intersect #2: Mike McCann: Publicity Rights in Collegiate Sports and Crypto in the Pros
2550
In this episode, Sports Illustrated legal analyst and contributor, Professor Mike McCann, and I discuss how pro athletes like NBA star, Spencer Dinwiddie of the Brooklyn Nets, is leveraging his earning potential by issuing a cryptocurrency (PaINT) via the Ethereum Network’s blockchain to tokenize his earnings and engage fans and investors directly. We also talked about when and how scholarship-athletes might actually benefit financially from their name, image and likeness.

Given trailblazers like college basketball star, Ed O’Bannon, the mega millions that schools make off the backs of the athletes who compete under their names, and the rising public support for these athletes to receive some type of economic benefit, we conclude that it’s not a matter of if but when college scholarship athletes truly and meaningfully participate in the upside of the value they generate for schools and the NCAA. As a former scholarship athlete and former professional tennis player, this topic is near and dear to my heart.

Tech Intersect #1: Minda Harts: Curate Your Own Career to Secure the Seat in the New Economy
1460
In this episode, I interview Minda Harts, author of the best-selling book The Memo: What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table, renowned speaker, entrepreneur, leader, and all-around amazing human. Minda and I covered a lot of ground in this interview. I felt like we were sitting around a kitchen table brainstorming about the exciting future of work and leadership for women, especially women of color.

Before The Memo was a book, it began as her career development platform for women of color, of the same name. In this episode, she explains why she created the company and what in her own career development as a woman of color inspired her to do so. She offers strategies to prepare a professional foundation that helps you achieve true agency and professional freedom and we both reflect on what to leave behind personally and professionally as we prepare to enter new possibilities and opportunities in a Web 3.0 data-driven world.

Listen. Learn. Leverage!

My poem-turned-song, Find Your Own Shine, closed out this episode. I wrote and published it in my book, Seasons of Her, and it also appeared in the CD/Book, SHINEI performed it around the country, in venues big and small. Here are some links to the track and the full CD:
