146. Misconceptions About Homesteading | Ash Turner of Turner Farm

With the growing popularity of homesteading on Instagram, it’s easy to look at this lifestyle through a romanticized filter.  No one would say that the homesteading life is 100% glamorous, but it’s hard to fully grasp the weight of the difficult moments until you are in them.  Ash of Turner Farm wrote a beautiful article for Homestead Mamas on this very topic, so I’m excited to bring her on the podcast to dive deeper into this conversation.  Ash shares about the ups and downs of starting and growing her homestead from scratch— everything from losing newborn livestock to milking her cow in a field under a beautiful sunset.  Whether you are dreaming of starting a homestead or you are already in the trenches, may this episode inform and encourage you about the challenges and blessings of this lifestyle.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How most of us aren’t prepared to experience the hard parts of homesteading until we get there
  • Some of the challenges that come with livestock births and deaths on the homestead
  • The surprising moments of beauty that make homesteading worth it
  • How you can start a homestead with modest resources
  • Stories of different animals’ fencing needs
  • Does homesteading truly save you money on food?
  • Why you might want to wean a calf from its mother
  • The best ways to learn about homesteading if you don’t have a background in it
  • Why now is the perfect time to start homesteading
  • Ash’s favorite sourdough recipes and what she is currently experimenting with in her kitchen

121. Answering Your Questions About Owning a Dairy Cow | Angel Turner of Rosehill Farm
00:46:37

I have been so excited to bring this episode to you all because I get so many questions about our dairy cow!  Angel Turner was the perfect person to join me in this conversation. She has gained a great deal of experience with dairy cows in just a short time.  It has been less than a year since Angel brought home her first family milk cow, and since then, she has taken on the task of halter breaking over 15 milk cows and matching them with families.  We could have talked forever about all things dairy cow, but we managed to address the most frequently asked questions in the time we had together.  If you are considering whether a family milk cow might be right for you, this episode will give you a peek into both of our journeys of getting started with owning dairy cows.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What it’s like owning your first dairy cow
  • The one thing you should always do before buying a cow
  • Preventing and treating mastitis
  • How much land you need to own a dairy cow
  • Breeding considerations
  • Calf sharing and weaning
  • Making the most of the acreage you have
  • Feeding your dairy cow: grass, hay, grain
  • Learning as you go in homesteading
  • The economics of owning a dairy cow
  • What it looks like to travel when you own a dairy cow

GUEST BIOGRAPHY

Angel and her husband Gabe started homesteading on a very small scale. A few chickens, a small garden, a lamb or goat here and there. But as they grew their family in their 10 years of marriage, they began to see the importance and benefits of the homesteading lifestyle for so many reasons. Angel and Gabe are passionate about taking their family back to a more simple way of living that connects them with the land and animals. They are now pursuing farming full-time and very much in the beginning stages of that journey! They also want others to see their potential no matter where they are, so they have begun teaching homesteading skills on their blog.

115. Where to Start with Natural Living, Cooking from Scratch, Holistic Health | Elizabeth Parsons of Purely Parsons
00:46:54

EPISODE SUMMARY

It can be overwhelming to figure out where to start in your natural living journey.  I get asked all the time, “Where should I start?”  On today’s episode, I am talking to Elizabeth Parsons of Purely Parsons about this exact question.  We have both been living a natural lifestyle for over a decade, and if there is anything we have learned, it’s that this is truly a process.  It’s unrealistic to overhaul our entire way of life overnight, but there are so many small changes we can make gradually over time that will add up to a new lifestyle.  I’m so grateful Elizabeth joined me for this conversation.  As a homeschooling, homesteading mama of five and pediatric nurse, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this topic.  Whether you are just getting started or have been living this way for many years, I hope some of the information shared in this episode serves as the catalyst for you to take the next step in your natural living journey.

In this episode, we cover:

- Starting small by making easy swaps in your home

- What resources we used to start learning and researching

- The importance of whole foods in natural living

- How we handle criticism from others about this lifestyle

- Success stories of healing our bodies naturally, apart from allopathic medicine

- What foods you can start making today in your home

- The most important items in Elizabeth’s wellness toolbox

114. Decluttering and Moving Towards Minimalism | Dawn Madsen of The Minimal Mom
00:39:11

Click here to watch this episode on YouTube.

At the beginning of a new year, many of us are thinking about decluttering our homes.  That’s why I am so excited to bring you this conversation with Dawn of The Minimal Mom.  Dawn has shared over 500 videos on her YouTube channel on minimalism, decluttering, and organization, but you don’t have to want to be a minimalist to benefit from her message.  Listen in as Dawn and I both share how our journeys toward living with less stuff became our normal way of life.

In this episode, we cover:

- What to do with sentimental items

- A new way to view items in your home

- Decluttering as a frugal person

- What to do with items you aren’t quite ready to part with

- How to change your mindset while shopping

- Shaping your kids’ view of material possessions

- Dawn’s top three tips for getting started with decluttering

Dawn is married to Tom, and they have four kids ages seven through 12. They’ve called themselves minimalists for about seven years and couldn't imagine living any other way. Because it's had such a positive impact on their lives, they enjoy sharing tips and tricks to help you simplify your home quickly too.

112. Getting it all Done, Setting Priorities Rebelling Against Mediocre Motherhood with Abbie M is for Mama
00:34:54

I just loved this discussion with Abbie, from M is for Mama. She is a mom of 10, with four of those being two sets of identical twins! She graciously shares her evolution as a mom, what got her through the harder seasons and how she is able to take things in stride with the perspective that comes from seeing some of your kids grow beyond the baby phase. She has so much wisdom to share with all of us!

80. Chatting potty training, baby sleep, overwhelm and seasons of life with, mom-of-10 Abbie, from M is for Mama
00:47:50

I just loved this sweet discussion with Abbie, from M is for Mama.

73. Raw Milk Why We Drink it and FAQ
00:27:59

Our family loves drinking raw milk. We have been enjoying it for 9 years now! Join me as I answer some of your FAQ about it! How does it taste? Do I drink raw milk while pregnant? What are the health benefits of raw milk?

As always, I want to encourage you to do your own research! Just because I say it's healthy, and that we love it, doesn't mean you won't get sick. This is just our personal experience.

Find raw milk in your area: https://www.realmilk.com/real-milk-finder/

Also, ask around in your local Weston Price FB group!

65. Simplifying our wardrobes- Cutting back on clothes to prevent mount laundry
00:19:37

With each new season, I take inventory of everyone's cloths (mine and the kids). I make sure we all have a handful of go-to outfits, and a few nice-ish things for church, gatherings, etc. The goal is super minimal, so that everyone knows what to wear and clothes aren't all over the house. I am still wearing my summer "uniform" but I will update with my fall wardrobe when I get it all purchased. :)

55. Money Saving Tips from a "Naturally Frugal" girl
00:30:34
I got this message from a listener "I had an idea for your podcast, mainly cause it will help me. So it’s a selfish idea I guess 😂 you’ve mentioned before that you are naturally frugal, and the thing is I’m not. At all. But I need to learn to be and I’ve been working on it. But I could use advice from someone who’s naturally good at it. So maybe at some point you could do a podcast on the things you and your husband do, and did early in your marriage, to avoid spending unnecessary." This episode is my attempt at answering this question! Grab all of my FREE ebooks and printables in the Farmhouse on Boone resource library HERE! 21. Why on earth did we buy a 130 year old house?! And concerns to look for if you want to also!
00:22:49

We moved into our Victorian farmhouse just over a year ago. I also grew up in an old farmhouse, and the place we lived before this one was pushing 100. So I have a bit of experience with the whole old house thing. I get a lot of questions about asbestos, lead paint, old plumbing and electrical etc. In this episode I'm tackling the why behind buying an old house and why it may not be for everyone.

10. Tools and essential for a from scratch kitchen
00:25:13

To cook real food daily, you're going to need a few key items. In this episode I talk about my top ten kitchen essentials for a traditional foods kitchen.

Y'all know I am a lover of real food. Give me all the fresh herbs, grass-fed beef, fermented veggies and raw dairy. The quartz countertops in this old farmhouse kitchen never look complete without a bubbly bowl of sourdough, a day old mason jar of milk with the whey separating, and veggies fermenting in the corner.

Some of the tasks of a traditional foods kitchen can sound daunting, but with the right routine and the right tools they just become second nature. Today I want to share those tools, that make these tasks flow smoothly, here in our home.

These essentials are work horses, that perform many different functions. They are durable and long lasting. I try desperately to avoid the unitasker in my kitchen. I like pieces that make my life easier, and are made with materials that will stand the test of time.

8. How I meal plan- from scratch food the easy way!
00:23:37

Learn my 5 tips for having healthy meals every night without meal planning. Making 3 meals a day does not have to be complicated. In fact, it is super simple! I've noticed that when people want to start cooking from scratch, they think they need elaborate meal plans with dry erase boards neatly filled in with three meals a day.

Baked blueberry pecan oatmeal for breakfast, Asian pesto curry for lunch and almond crusted parmesan tilapia for dinner...

(I just made those titles up, by the way, but they really do all sound fabulous.)

Just do a quick Pinterest search for "Paleo Recipes" and prepare to be overwhelmed.

I love a good crispy coconut chicken with squash and parmesan fritters as much as the next person, but maybe for a Saturday night special dinner, or a night when I have a little extra time to spend in the kitchen...

Which is pretty much never.

I am a mom of six small kids!

If you think you need to make Paleo safe coconut tortillas for every meal, that plan isn't something sustainable . No wonder people limit their healthy eating attempts to 30 days.

Eating real food can feel so overwhelming when we hold ourselves to these standards!

What ever happened to good old fashioned meat, vegetables and herbs?

Back when my grandma was a mother of young children, I imagine she cooked a whole chicken, baked potatoes and maybe served it all with a biscuit and canned jam.

No fancy recipes. Just real food.

00:29:51

The GAPS diet played an instrumental role in reversing Laura's son Sam's dairy intolerance and gut related symptoms associated with it. Listen in as she shares her story with the GAPS diet, and I share our experience as well. It truly is amazing what our bodies can do when given the right foods to heal.

This is the GAPS book we referenced: https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Syndrome-D-D-D-H-D-Schizophrenia/dp/0954852028/ref=sr_1_2?crid=10NWM7KWIW3RA&keywords=gaps+diet+natasha+campbellmcbride&qid=1579558618&sprefix=gaps+natas%2Caps%2C176&sr=8-2

5. Cast iron in the kitchen- I could never live without it!
00:22:45

Cast iron has been my skillet of choice for  many years now. There are only two things that get better with age in the kitchen. One is cast iron and the other is homemade sourdough starter!

WHY CAST IRON IS BETTER THAN NONSTICK

Reason #1, of course, is it doesn’t have all the bad stuff. Nonstick pans are coated with a carcinogenic chemical  called perfluorooctanoic acid. Not only does it leech into the food when cooked at high temperatures, but also produces toxic fumes in the air. Not to be overly dramatic, but you need to get that stuff out of your house ASAP.

Although the health concerns with nonstick was what drew me to using cast iron in the first place, the ease and beauty with which they cook kept me coming back for more. A perfectly fried egg, potatoes so crispy you can hear the crunch, a carmelized sear on a roast to seal in all those delicious juices…I mean, if you aren’t cooking with cast iron is it even cooking? Give me that 20 pound skillet that gets better with use every. single. time. If I go on vacation, and the condo has a flimsy nonstick and a plastic spatula, I cook like I have one hand. Totally handicap.

Cast iron’s where its at, my friends.

2. Ten years in the making- the renovation story of our last farmhouse
00:29:52

Sometimes in this world of Instagram, Youtube and HGTV it might seem like everyone else is pulling off massive renovation projects in just a few months' time. Endless budgets (or unrealistic more likely) and several contractors make it all happen. The renovation story of our last farmhouse might be a little more relatable. We bought it for a super cheap price, lived with the ugly (other than a little paint) for several years until we paid it off. After that we used a modest budget to slowly finish the project. Our cheap little fixer upper was eventually featured in Do it Yourself Magazine and Flea Market Style!

In this first episode of the Simple Farmhouse Life podcast, I'm talking about things you don't know about me and my family. As a full-time content creator, people make a lot of assumptions about us based on a very limited glimpse into our lives. It is time to set the record straight on a lot of these!
