How to Use The Right Equation When You're Quoting Your Jobs | The Pricing for Profits Series Part 2 - Ep #146
00:16:01

To turn a profit, it’s a rule of thumb that businesses need to charge more than they spend on producing their products or providing their services. In other words, "markup" and "margin" are related, but not synonymous. 🙅

Errors can occur when profit margins and markups are mixed up. Your bottom line may suffer as a result of either pricing your services too low or too high.

Understanding the difference between these two terms is critical for determining how to best price your services. 🤔

Contractors often struggle to use math correctly, which is one of their biggest problems. Most of them don't even know what the break-even margin is or what it means.

So in this episode of the No BS for Contractors podcast, we'll go over break-even margin and how we can use break-even to make sure that we're quoting jobs profitably. We’ll go into what formula you need to use and what constraints we need to look out for. 👀

If you're a contractor, listen in and try some of these strategies.

You'll be able to make a difference in your business. 👊

Knowing Your Break-Even to Make Sure You're Pricing Profitably | The Pricing for Profits Series Part 1 - Ep #145
00:22:10

Let's get this straight. 🧐

Break Even Margin is the point at which you can put on a job and not lose money.

Basically, you're breaking even here instead of gaining any money.

The problem with this is that there are a couple of dangers that come with it:🤢

1. You don't have proven math, or a proven formula to ensure that your pricing or your jobs consider all the things that you need to consider when you're looking at your business size and what expenses are involved.

2. When you don't price your jobs evenly, you're not sure if you're losing money or making money on each job.

In today’s No BS for Contractors podcast, we will discuss what you should really take into account when deciding how much to put on jobs, based on how much overhead your business incurs.

Don't worry because we will go into greater detail about that as well as discuss other related topics.

No matter where you're at, you better listen in! 👂

Why Radical Self-Care Is the Ultimate Key to Unlocking Your Business Potential - Ep #144
00:40:18

Often, contractors and business owners neglect to take care of themselves, especially when wearing multiple hats at once. It's common to hear the phrase "self-care" used in the context of overindulging.

The concept of self-care, goes deeper than merely avoiding bad days by following a diet and taking some time off the tools.🛠️

Self-care entails more than simply nourishing your mind and body.

☝️Take note that:

1. It has the potential to have a long-term impact on your life

2. It is concentrating on your physical health while prioritizing your mental health by making the most of what you already have

3. It allows you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself and others, which can be challenging.

But what’s more to that? 🤔

In this episode of the No BS podcast, our guest, James Cant, discusses "Radical Self-Care", saying that your first priority should always be to take care of yourself. He emphasizes its significance to tradespeople.

There are no limits when it comes to addressing other issues.

Make sure you don't miss this episode. You'll be glad you didn't.💪

Chapters:

3:04 The importance of self-care in business

4:48 Why you need to pay yourself more than your employees

10:21 The most important things we have to take when prioritizing ourselves

13:21 How to get more and better sleep

16:23 If you can't get access to the sun, get an infrared light

23:10 How often do you see when you've doubled your business, you're less happy?

25:52 What is the effect on you when you value yourself more?

28:34 Who do you want to be: looking into other's perspectives

33:17 James shares the fear of losing his daughter

35:34 Think that you're the center of the universe

Business owners who do any of these want to overhaul their management approach as well:

You don't want to LOSE good people because they leave for greener pastures.

You want them to STAY with you because they love working for you and your company.

The Super Simple "Sticky" Process to Keep Your Team Accountable - Ep #140
00:52:31

Hey Contractors!

We all know that…

“Business is a journey, not a straight line.”

Like anything else in life, success doesn’t happen overnight.

In this episode of the No BS podcast, CEO of TEAM Builders LTD Austin Maginnis, will share his expedition in using the sticky system to make sure to get things done in his contracting business, and to have his team have a visualization of what accountability is.

Listen to this for lots of valuable nuggets without missing a beat!

🗒️ Note from Austin:

Attached here is a doc that helps explain how we (TEAM Builders) operate our production calendar internally. The cool part is that it's tied to zero technology. It's actually built after the same philosophy that Toyota enhanced the automotive industry with their assembly line engineering that increased the quality of vehicles. Super cool.

We call it the "Sticky" Process.

It operates completely on post-it notes. This system is what has allowed me to get off the operational tools and into a CEO seat - no joke I can leave my company in peace for an entire week and not deal with phone call headaches. Which reminds me - I am going to be traveling to Iceland October 6-10. I am doing some deep work on a men's retreat that weekend with some other CEOs - cool story I will tell later.

Anyways, My thought is how cool would it be to tell PFC clients who struggle with some of the complexities of these bigger project management tools (not knocking poorly on Check-Up - what I saw today was impressive from Jay and I love how it works for him)... But what if they could run production simply on sticky notes? This is what I have been doing and building the last two years and this is what I want to share with you guys.

I feel teaching a GC pod is great and I am happy to do that if that is where I am best fit currently. But I feel my biggest value I can bring to this community is helping people specifically develop from simple production schedules to larger production schedules all on a whiteboard system that makes perfect sense for how this industry operates.

00:00 Intro

Taking Referrals to the Next Level - Ep #139
00:39:32

Our best quality sales leads are generated through REFERRALS. 🤝

Simply put, a referral is someone recommending your business to others.

A powerful sales engine that helps you close more deals can be a powerful tool in the right hands.

Reach out to current or potential customers to identify prospects who might also be interested in your business or product.

There's MORE to it than that, though.

You have to remember that your customers can RESONATE with the solutions you offer. 😉

What is the point of all of this if they don't?

Our guest today is Michael Griffiths of Partnership Club, who explains why inspiring those in the trades is essential.

Additionally, we will discuss how to make an emotional impact on the customer instead of just doing the job.

What else is in store for you today? 🤔

Better sit tight and stay focused on what's to come.

Chapters:

00:00 Intro

02:50 Getting referrals involves studying human behavior

04:41 The leverage path

09:49 Don’t just aim for a transactional relationship with your customers

24:50 Knowing what referral sources are

33:55 How to tell when a relationship is deepening with your customers

00:42:36

Should you always be involved in running your business - rather than you controlling it, does it control you? 🤚

The question is not only directed at business owners, but also at roofers since they often work 24/7. In spite of gains in profits, roofers are unable to enjoy them since they are always pressed for time. ⌛

There is no doubt that roofers contribute significantly to the trades industry.

However, they must be AWARE of the importance of having time off or having time for themselves away from the daily grind.

Check out this episode in which Adam Sands interviews Liam Morin. 👀

From Hating Contracting As A Kid, to Loving It Now - Ep #137
00:34:55

Are you treating your people well enough to keep them?

The modern workforce does not want to feel excluded, so make them feel INCLUDED.

You shouldn't make your contracting business all about yourself because IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU. ❌

Take note that you cannot run your business without the people in your company.

As they progress, it is important to encourage them while also regularly CHECKING in on them. ✔️📋

Don't be afraid to ask them if they're stressed at work.

Think about what you can do to make someone successful in their work if they have a lot on their plate.

To take care of them, you only need to be SUPPORTIVE. 😉

In today's podcast, we discuss how the above points are extremely essential to know when you’re a business owner, and how Bill Reiman of R.K. Reiman Construction, Inc. overcame social media pain points and not having exposure to such tools before.

Go on and grab your coffee and listen while we list off other topics we'll cover in this episode.

How To Write an Effective Job Ad That Attracts Great Talent - Ep #121
00:17:45

How do you write the ultimate job ad to attract A-players?

The best contractors that I know, treat hiring like marketing.

This means they put out the same amounts of TIME, MONEY, AND ENERGY they do in marketing their business to clients, to market themselves to potential hires. So let's break down what a "marketable" job ad or A+ job ad looks like:

1️⃣ Eye-catching headline: You're gonna lose someone's attention or get it, within the first few seconds, so the first line is probably THE most important part. A headline that says  "Looking for an exciting career change?" is a lot more likely to get someone's attention than "ABC contracting looking to hire." for example.

2️⃣ Why should THEY work for you?: That's the first question you need to be answering, and this is where most contractors slip. The market is your employees right now, so what sets you apart from your competition, is that they should choose you.

4️⃣ What's it like working for you?  Talk about the environment and the expectations you have of potential hires. The contractors that resonate with your vision, will approach you.

4️⃣Do they have growth opportunities?  No one wants to stay in the same place for 20 years, so do they have a chance to scale and develop in their career if they work for you?

5️⃣And lastly, all the technicalities, that they're gonna need to work for you, such as licenses and skills. Remember to keep these ads running around even after you’re hiring, a good hiring ad is GREAT for building your roaster and getting benchwarmers.

From Almost Shutting Down His Business To Making 10x Profits in 1 year - Ep.#119 Ft. Stephane Savoie
00:25:41

From a guy about to close his doors to 10Xing his profits!

How did Stephan do it? That's what this podcast EP is ALL about.

Despite having some kick-ass core values, this CEO was working himself DRY and taking no money home.

Stephan had no idea what it cost to run a business, him and his team were applying a 20% margin on every single job and hoping for the best.

Things like his:

✅ Profit breakeven margin.

✅ Overhead costs.

✅  Labor burden

✅ Operating costs.

✅ Hidden costs.

Where all going unnoticed, the domino effect was he had no idea how much he was spending, and also no idea how much money he was(n't) making.

In his own words "Most contractors DON'T know how to quote properly" and that's not sustainable.

Taking the time to get a grip of his numbers not only 10X'd his profits, it also gave him back:

✅  Time for his family.

✅ A better perspective as a CEO (working ON the business instead of in the business and dropping the heavy lifting.)

✅ Knowledge of the tools that have optimized his profitability and quality.

✅ The right focus on HOW to grow his team (aka what personnel he needed.

and many more things that have lifted ALL the weight off his shoulders these days.

The truth is, that if you wanna scale your company you have to invest on it.

Because he didn't know his numbers, like many other contractors, Stephane thought he couldn't afford it, that almost got him to bankruptcy.

But once he learned otherwise,  he was able to fill his pockets and put the remaining gains to work on the RIGHT areas of his business.

How To Overcome The Supply Chain Challenges - Ep. 117 Ft. Jay Carter
00:38:04

"The supply chain issue will drive my business to the ground!"

"Suppliers are 100% out to screw us tradies over!"

"There's no way to get ahead in the trades with this shortage anymore!"

You've probably heard some of these before, and I understand they come from a place of frustration.

But the idea that you can't leverage this situation as a HUGE opportunity for your business, is mostly misinformed BS.

While it's true that every contractor I know, is struggling right now, learning how to deal with supply chain challenges is tough as hell…

There's another very real side to this.

Those contractors who have taken the time to learn how to flip the situation in their favor, using the tools available to them, are making bank.

But unfortunately, contractors have no idea where to start when it comes to things like:

-What contracts (and legal clauses) to put in place when setting expectations for a job.

-How to best deal with pricing issues in a way that won't put off the customer OR leave you broke.

- How to leverage their relationship with their suppliers to SCALE (yes, seriously.)

And countless other things that have been a game-changer to the thousands of contractors we've personally been helping during these hard times.

So today, Jay and I, set out to put them all in one place so that YOU can start making the most out of them.

How A 20 Million Dollar Contracting Business Runs - Ep. 116 Ft. Leeroy Beeby & Fares Elsabbagh
00:33:50

How do you build a 7-fig contracting business?

By making the right decisions and focusing on leveraging all the information a CEO should know.

I’ve got experts Leeroy Beeby and Fares Elsabbagh, President and CEO of Canadian General Contractors Group, on the hot seat today.   And we’re gonna go all-in on the dangers of guesswork as a contractor and why it might be one of the key things keeping you poor.

Featuring how to best leverage your data for profits (and why it should be the only base for negotiations with clients) + what are the key areas that every contractor starting out should know.

Besides giving you these top formulas we’ll talk about what investments (of their time and otherwise) allowed Fares to build and run a business that pays him more than $20M per year.

Financials, systemized processes, building your brand and other SOPs are the one thing that can save you from going bankrupt.

This means that they need to be constantly updated and reviewed to make sure profit and a scalable company are still the results.

That, though, can be scary or even tedious for a lot of contractors, but we promise after you listen to this podcast.

You'll see the only thing stopping you is not starting to turn your business around TODAY.

We hope you enjoy this EP and we'll see you on the flip side.

How This Contractor Went From Breaking Even To $320,000 In Profits - Ep. Ep. 115 Ft. Todd Garloff
00:24:15

Todd Garloff describes the former state of his business as “In total chaos”.

He had no notion of his numbers, no idea where to start organizing, and zero systems in place, not to mention asking himself every end of the month: “Where did all my money go?”

9 months after coaching, he’s currently breaking even at $320 PROFITS and attributes his success to being surrounded by people who have different skills and have been able to uplift his business.

88% of contractors have reported difficulty finding and hiring potential hires for their business, often leading them to settle with just about anyone, and causing a decline in business quality, stress increases, etc.

So, now Todd and I are gonna go all in to address this challenge that most contractors face.

Todd gives us an all in as to what his business looked like prior to implementing these systems and how not having structures contributed to slowing down growth and even his finances.

The question is...how did he attract and retain that top talent and by extension get to keep all his profit?

Creating an environment with people who saw eye-to-eye with his company’s value through proven systems, modernizing his business’s marketing and systemizing his job processes as well as getting completely in control of his numbers

If you wanna go fast, go alone, if you wanna go far and get a taste of freedom, come with us!

We hope you enjoy it, and we’ll see you on the flip side!

Contractor! Here Is How You Deal With Negative Reviews | Ep. #108
00:14:13

Bad reviews happen to everyone, even the best of clients can have their wires crossed one day and leave you wondering how a 1-star review or an angry comment rant got to your yelp or google wall.

Bad reviews happen to everyone, even the best of clients can have their wires crossed one day and leave you wondering how a 1-star review or an angry comment rant got to your yelp or google wall.   If they’re not consistent, then it means this is not about quality or delivery but rather simple odds, to some extent, if your company makes an effort to deliver the best service you can, you probably know that as a CEO, but it doesn’t make this situation any less frustrating to deal with.

So we figured we’d lend you a crutch and remind you how you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT strive to act in this situation.

Take the right posture to protect your contracting business and make sure you have all the documentation in order to protect yourself! Don’t let bad reviews get you down and nip the situation in the bud ASAP, we promise it’s doable!

Call Bullshit On Your Mindset | Ep. #77 Ft. Austin Maginnis
00:58:22
“We had never been profitable, I had never been able to take a salary and we were still losing money.” Was what absolute Champion, ultimate hard worker Austin Maginnis had to say about his business pre-systemizing it! After asking the right questions establishing the right systems, Austin’s business was able to go from: Laying people off because of cost issues to a solid (and evergrowing!) team of 19 people. Working from a coffee shop to having their own office. (Complete with kitchen space for the staff!) And best of all, a 60% profit increase from last year to this year! You're probably starting to hone in on who it is. I'm gonna let the cat out of the bag. Hiring an administrator is one of the best ways to increase your profits, your efficiency, your available time, and frickin get your head out of the fucking chaos. So stay tuned and find out the real value an admin person brings to your business. -------- In This Episode: Should you hire an Administrator? The Nine-Box Matrix. Behind The Scenes - The Regret Of Being In Chaos As An Owner | PFC Podcast Bonus Episode | ft. Peter McGrath
00:17:45
I wasn't going to post this... But I think for the good of the contractor community and the PFC family, we need to get this out there. We love to tell ourselves that we live with no regret... ... That we'll always be this hard-skinned, indestructible master of our trade who can work endlessly (and doesn't need to sleep, hang out with friends / family, or enjoy life) Ever wonder what the impacts of that are? Watch the first 15 seconds of this podcast and then tell me how tough you really are. When it comes to losing time with your loved ones, your children, your wife/husband, or even your friends; spending all your time on a business that's not even structured properly is a recipe for a WASTED LIFE... Peter learned this the hard way. You will too if you think you're all that and a bag of chips (meanwhile you've been working 90 hours per week for the last year, 2 years, 3 years....) This one hits hard, folks.

PFC Podcast Episode 31 | Your Estimator Doesn't Know What They're Doing Unless You Give Them THIS | feat. Dustin Collins
00:25:29
Success often comes down to one simple thing. In Dustin's case, it was having the right plan from the get-go. It enabled him to incentivize employees... So they worked harder, faster, and with greater quality of work... And finish everything before the deadline. Unless you start your jobs with an estimator... 9 times out of 10 you're going to end up like a chicken with it's head cut off. Don't let this happen to you. Make sure you use a "job site cheat sheet" to get on top of every project even before it starts. Dustin talks about how he applied this strategy in his own contracting business. PFC Podcast Episode 29 | How To Manage Being Busy In Your Contracting Company | ft. Dustin Collins
00:41:13
What are the “3 Rs” and why are they so important for contractors? Dustin tells us exactly what they are... And the problems that business owners could face unless you have them in place. Most contractors never talk about this… Things like job descriptions, job policy manuals, and organizational charts to name just a few. Because unless everyone clearly understands their role… You’ll never have the foundations for building a long-term sustainable business. This is the first part in a series of 3. PFC Podcast Episode 28 | How To Find Reliable Employees In Unreliable Times
00:31:18
Want to scale your contracting business? You'd better have a solid team to support you, let alone to support a high volume of work. In last week's podcast, we talked about why you MUST have a crew of "A Players" if you want to thrive (not just merely survive). And sure, that might seem obvious enough to you, or at least it should now after having listened to last week's episode... But what about FINDING these "A-Players"?... How do we build a system for attracting these people, and filter those that we attract from the tire kickers who just end up sinking your business and f'ing up your job sites. I see this problem everyday with not only our clients, but even with contractors in our free facebook group "Contractor Tips". And after helping 6,000+ contractors build a successful business... I've discovered the action items you need to start attracting your "A team" starting today. Turn up the volume and check it now! PFC Podcast Episode 23 | Why You Should NEVER Lower Your Prices
00:32:57
Why you should NEVER lower your prices. Yes, even when competition in your market is at an all time high. So many contractors are doing this, and think it's the only way to land work. It's time to put an end to it, so turn up your headphones (or speakers)! Less Work Equals More Profits. That's all there is to it. Don't believe me? If not, and if you're new to this podcast, you might want to brace yourself. I have... and it made me sit back and realize that there had to be a better way... A way to make more profits without grinding tooth and nail day in and day out... Today's podcast is all about showing you how you can actually make more while doing less.... Like, A LOT less... The solution is right under your nose, I'll also show you a step by step game plan. PFC Podcast Eposide 14 | Myths From The Trades | Jon Tenbrinke & Andy Lobsinger
00:57:04
Myths from the trades industry will always keep contractors from reaching true freedom. A great example is where Jon and Andy were 9 months ago... who thought they had to do everything themselves, and counted themselves lucky to have any clients at all (even the bad ones). 9 Months later, after coaching with Andrew, they've opened up a second business, making more net profit, all while working less hours than ever before. We also talked about how they gained an unfair advantage over the competition. Enjoy the Podcast!
