#79 - Discovering Vulnerability with Atoosa Rubenstein
53:41

This week, Maria speaks with Atoosa Rubenstein.

Atoosa Rubenstein is the author of Atoosa Unedited, an at-times confronting, at-times healing weekly letter on Substack where she models authenticity, self-love and acceptance for her readers. The former Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Magazine and Founder/Editor-in-Chief of CosmoGIRL! In 1998, Rubenstein created a prototype for CosmoGIRL! within 48 hours and was offered the job on the spot making her, at 26,  the youngest Editor in Chief in the over 100 year history of Hearst Magazines. After a successful run at CosmoGIRL!, Hearst acquired Seventeen and tapped Rubenstein to turn the venerable title around. After just one year at the title, Rubenstein reversed a five year decline in Seventeen's newsstand sales and delivered a total newsstand growth of 23% within two years. She also conceived and was an Executive Producer on MTV's Miss Seventeen a series that debuted in the fall of 2005. The following year, Rubenstein left the industry altogether to undergo a grueling 13-year personal excavation and discovery mission that led to three of her own daughters and now, a twice-a-week love letter Atoosa Unedited, written for her beloved readers, now adults in their own right. Columbia University has honored her as one of the top 250 alumni through the ages. She has also been recognized by the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York as a Woman of Distinction. Rubenstein has been featured in Crain's New York Business’ "40 Under 40" and Folio's "30 Under 30." She lives in Manhattan with her three daughters.

How do we make sure we don’t get caught up with someone who is a narcissist? What should we look out for? How can you know if your partner IS one?

Dr. Ramani Durvasula (better known as Dr. Ramani) is a licensed clinical psychologist in Los Angeles, CA and Professor of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles. She takes on our modern scourges of entitlement and incivility in the book “Don’t You Know Who I Am”: How to Stay Sane in the Era of Narcissism, Entitlement and Incivility She is the author of the modern relationship survival manual Should I Stay or Should I Go: Surviving a Relationship With a Narcissist. The focus of Dr. Ramani’s clinical, academic and consultative work is the etiology and impact of narcissism and related high-conflict, entitled, antagonistic personality styles on human relationships, mental health, and societal expectations.

Dr. Ramani is an honest, authentic, and brutally honest voice on the struggles raised by narcissism in the US and globally.

While Maria is on a few weeks break, we’re revisiting some of her favorite episodes from season 1! Season 2 starts in September!

One of our goals on Ask a Matchmaker is to have real, authentic conversations about all things related to love and relationships. Cut through the BS and talk about things that really matter.

This week, Maria is talking about one of the most unique dating apps on the internet right now, Snack, with its founder Kim Kaplan!

After a two year hiatus after Plenty of Fish, where she spent her time advising and angel investing, she scrolled on TikTok and saw that many users were creating essentially dating video profiles. #51 - That Episode about Soulmates with Psychic Medium Michelle Clare
37:33

This week, we’re talking about love on a different level. Maria talks so much about her belief in manifestation. Is it possible to call in your soulmate? Do we really HAVE soulmates in our lives?

We’re going deep into the soul with physic medium, Michelle Clare.

In a span of 11 years, Michelle had had 3 near death experiences. The second one was a monumental life changing event in which Michelle suffered a traumatic brain injury. Shortly after this life altering event, she started receiving information for other people from their loved ones who had transitioned. All 3 NDEs were a reminder of an unconditional love and connection that surpasses our earthly life.

During readings, Michelle is divinely guided by the client's Spirit Team to lovingly empower, direct, provide comfort and hope for each individual. She is known for giving factual information: personality traits, characteristics, and validations of signs that loved ones are sending. She helps each person she reads to raise their vibration, clear their energy and understand that they are not living life alone.

#45 - That Episode about FOMO and FOBO in Dating with Patrick McGinnis
50:37

It’s easy to sit on our phone, scroll through social media and feel the fear of missing out, or FOMO. Everything looks amazing! Why aren’t I doing that? Why don’t I have that in my life?

When it comes to dating, it’s easy to not make a decision or commitment when there are so many options available. It’s the fear of better options, or FOBO.

But how do we live in the moment? How do we make the decision? How do we appreciate what we already have?

This week Maria discusses this and more with the man that created the term FOMO, Patrick McGinnis!

Patrick J. McGinnis is a venture capitalist and the author of Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in a World of Overwhelming Choice and The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job. Patrick coined the term FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), as well as the related term FOBO (Fear of a Better Option) in a 2004 article in the student newspaper of Harvard Business School. Since that time, FOMO has since been added to the dictionary and FOBO has become an increasingly popular framework to describe choice paralysis.

Patrick is also the host of the hit podcast, FOMO Sapiens (www.fomosapiens.com), where entrepreneurial thinkers unpack how they make decisions. He has been featured in The New York Times, Politico, The Financial Times, and The Guardian.

#36 - That Episode About the Texas Freeze with Lifestyle Blogger Danielle Price
48:09

The cold weather in Texas has been all over the news the last two weeks.

This week, Maria talks to someone on the ground and is dealing with it first hand... lifestyle blogger, Danielle Price.

After graduating from film school at the University of Southern California in 2014, Danielle worked at a content creation focused ad agency & house of lifestyle magazines in Los Angeles.

Danielle quit her job and put her whole life into a storage unit in January 2020 (great timing!) to take the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in the South of France where she planned to learn to cook from the chef/owner of a bed & breakfast in Provence in exchange for overhauling the social media of the business. However, the pandemic struck and she unexpectedly ended up back in her childhood bedroom in the middle of the West Texas desert instead.

While spending 2020 soaking up precious time with her parents, Danielle dove into writing and creating social media videos for She’s Fun, her lifestyle blog for all things feminine & fun. She continues to help small businesses with unique content creation and branding.

#13 - That Episode About Growing Up in the Children of God Cult with Flor and Tamar Edwards
54:00

How we grow up can dictate how we act in our relationships as adults, whether we consciously know it or not. We might learn about these habits the hard way.

How would growing up in a religious movement that some describe as an apocalyptic cult affect you as an adult? Could you imagine that?

Today, Matchmaker Maria speaks with author Flor Edwards and her twin sister Tamar Edwards. By age twelve, Flor and Tamar had lived in 24 different locations across three continents. Always on the move to escape the Antichrist and in preparation for the Apocalypse in 1993, their nomadic childhood prompted Flor to pen her memoir Apocalypse Child: A Life in End Times. Flor movingly describes her early life growing up with her family and 11 siblings as a member of The Children of God, a controversial religious movement that many describe as an apocalyptic cult. Tamar works in health and wellness and is currently in the process of receiving her certification as a sex and intimacy coach.

#12 - That Episode about Zoë Gulliksen’s Dating Disaster
01:11:02

We all have dating stories that are easy to look back at and see how we should have gotten out of it early on. Some are silly to look at and some seem so dangerous. But it isn’t easy to see what’s going on when we’re in the middle of it.

This week, Maria is sharing one story, hoping you might learn from it and maybe share this with someone that might be in the middle of their own toxic relationship.

Sharing her story this week is writer Zoë Gulliksen. She’s worked at a wealth of different places including Gotham News, The New York Public Library, MoviePass, and Midtown Comics.

While working as a movie journalist she interviewed talent such as Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Colin Firth, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, and many more.

She’s written a blog post about her toxic relationship that has been seen by many people. So much so that anyone who has tried to date this guy since they find the blog post, saving themselves from potential disaster!

#11 - That Episode Where They Bust Hollywood Romances with Gus Constantellis
01:18:47

We all have one of two things: a romance we’ve seen on TV or a movie that we LOVE and a romance we’ve seen on TV or a movie that we can’t stand. Maybe because we don’t like the people OR we think “There’s no way that would actually happen!”

So much of our society’s ideas on what a relationship could be or how it forms comes from movies. It’s screwed up how we look at romance.

This week, we’re doing something different. We’re diving into pop culture and finding out what’s good, what’s bad and what’s wrong with love and relationships in movies, TV and music.

And we have our resident pop culture geek with us to help, comedian Gus Constantellis!

Gus Constantellis is a first generation Greek-American LGBTQ+ stand up comedian/writer. He regularly performs at Caroline's on Broadway, Stand Up NY, and all over the tristate area. He brings his unique perspective of growing up in NYC with immigrant parents to his standup, writing, and vibrant personality. If you’re Greek, you probably know him from the “Greek Mom” bits that we all are obsessed with.

#9 - What Is That Episode With Jeopardy! Champion Buzzy Cohen?
51:08

What do Jeopardy! and dating have in common?

No, Alex Trebek isn’t single, he’s happily married, sorry to disappoint you.

But you can learn so much about how to approach dating and relationships by how top competing contestants on the show prepare to play the game.

And this week’s guest is just the person to help… Jeopardy! Champion and Author of the new book, “Get Ready: A Champion’s Guide to Preparing for the Moments That Matter,” Buzzy Cohen!

Buzzy Cohen took America by storm during his ten-game run on Jeopardy! in 2016. His distinctive sharp look, broad knowledge base, and irreverent sense of humor captured people's attention like no other contestant had before. This led to coverage on the likes of Buzzfeed and Vanity Fair, as well as appearances on Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight. Winning the 2017 Tournament of Champions only bolstered his position as a fan favorite - his gutsy bets and playful attitude with Alex Trebek and other contestants made his competition an all-time favorite for many viewers including yours truly. Cohen returned as one of the six captains for the Season 35 "All-Star Games" where his charm and personality took center stage among such luminaries as Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. He is often cited, by no-less than the NY Times, as a possible replacement host for Alex Trebek.

In hs new book “Get Ready- A Champion’s Guide to Preparing for the Moments That Matter”, Buzzy draws on his own experience as well as interviews with other top performers (from musicians and federal prosecutors to glassblowers and competitive coffee brewers) to teach listeners how the unique preparation method he developed can help them train for high-pressure performance situations in their own lives: interviews, exams, speeches, and even dating!

Things discussed in this episode include…

  • Why women should feel confident to reach out to a man first. (it worked for Buzzy’s wife!)
  • The difference between planning vs. preparing and how to use it for your first dates.
  • How to get better at first dates and how to have fun with it along the way.
  • How to prepare for moments that matter in life so you can fully be in the moment when it happens.
  • The importance of intellectual compatibility in dating.
  • The order of what you learn what you’re compatible with in a dating partner.
  • Buzzy’s top three tips on dating and how you can use his Jeopardy! Preparation skills to make you a better dater.

Get Buzzy’s book, “Get Ready: A Champion’s Guide to Preparing for the Moments That Matter,” on Audible.
