Midlife Mountain: Fun Midlife Sh*t Quickie Minisode

EP 60: Does midlife sometimes feel like a giant fckn’ mountain with varying terrain, no water, no sweatband? Then that same mountain, the next day is easy peasy, you could hike in 15 minutes without sweating? This is “Midlife Mountain”. You never know what to expect from day to day. 45:11

EP 57: Are you feeling the midlife muffin top? Do you want to manage it, but don't want to get sucked into diet fads? Do you know about the “shimmy & squat” technique for “tucking in your muffin top”? Are you feeling overwhelmed by crazy workouts? It’s time to find your “good enough” in midlife!

It’s all about finding balance peeps! What is your “good enough” in midlife? What does your “good enough” look like & feel like?

This minisode is part of the Fun Midlife Sh*t Quickie Minisode Series. 01:42:29

We discuss understanding vaginal pain and learning that it does not have to become our new normal. Jill teaches us not to settle for less when it comes to comfort and pleasure in midlife sexual and vaginal health. Jill also explains the importance of knowing our bodies, doing our research on vaginal products and finding a specialist if your needs are not met by your regular gynecologist. Evolving Your Inner Midlife Hamster: Fun Midlife Sh*t Quickie Minisode
43:18

EP 53: The midlife hamster wheel keeps spinning! Why can’t I get off? We hate it, but stay on it anyway. WHY WHY WHY? Do you feel like you are just constantly spinning in a circle, doing the same sh*t over and over? Do you keep making promises to yourself to start new habits, drink more water, exercise more, eat more nutritious food, maybe more sex? Lol. The familiar Groundhog Day/hamster lifestyle is so much easier because it’s on routine, requires no thought, risks or new pushes of effort. But, it also tastes like stale bread and moldy cheese.

This week, I use my golden sh*t shovel to dig deep into how to spark change in midlife by working on your inner midlife hamster, in my new minisode, “Evolving Your Inner Midlife Hamster”. I discuss how to jump off of the midlife hamster wheel, stop repeating and start evolving to start midlife remixing! This is not overnight. It is a process of asking yourself specific questions to get in the right mindset and little behavioral tweaks to create habits. In this minisode, I give advice from a couple experts who I follow and my own personal experiences. I explain small steps we can make each day to help us get to where we want to be. If you are looking to make a change in your midlife, then maybe this minisode can be your first step off the hamster wheel. I have some real life examples of simple sh*t you can do. If I can do it, believe me, you can.

This minisode is part of the Fun Midlife Sh*t Quickie Minisode Series. This new minisode series is highlighting resonating & edgy midlife sh*t from my IG, solos, and short pop in guests on stuff we are all thinking about, but maybe too embarrassed to ask…and, of course, more random stream of consciousness rants with loads of sarcasm, relatable humor mixed with expert info. Why would you skip?

31 | Nipple Covers, Teen Sex Talks, & Mom Culture
57:54

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an open and honest conversation called, Nipple Covers, Teen Sex Talks, & Mom Culture. My guest, Whitney Cicero, is a professional mom, actor, writer, award-winning vlogger, and founder of Whink Creative (rated one of the Top Five Agencies to Watch). Her hysterical blog, The New Stepford, has been featured on The Today Show and HuffPost and has gained more than 50 million views.

Her blog isn’t like any other mommy blog where the articles always seem to read, “My kid did this annoying thing today blah blah blah but it was all worth it.” She’s here to break that mold and tell it how it is. “Kids can be dicks. Husbands can be jackholes. Oftentimes I leave the house looking like a homeless dog.”

Whitney’s here to bring relatability with a kick of humor...because who does have the time to be the “perfect” mom anyway? We are going to dig deep into the details of Whitney’s journey, in her “midlife remix”, in her second half of life. Get up close and personal!

Some highlights:

  • The mission behind The New Stepford
  • From blogs to vlogs—how Whitney became a viral video creator
  • Creating time for passion projects & pursuing cool, new sh*t in your midlife
  • Popping zits aka porn for women
  • Why nipple covers are a must-have
  • Sex conversations with your teens

28 | The 12 Reasons Why I Started My Midlife Remix: Rant-Style
40:31

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an open and honest conversation called, The 12 Reasons Why I Started My Midlife Remix:Rant-Style. This week, I’m hosting a solocast for the podcast’s one-year anniversary, rant style. I talk about my personal sh*t  (12 reasons why) and how I got the “midlife itchies” at 45 to do something just for me. This is not a midlife crisis. I am calling it my midlife remix. This remix brought me to my passion project of The Flexible Neurotic Podcast...normalizing and inspiring self reinvention in midlife. Midlife is a time when we have permission to become self obsessed...Me time. In this solocast, there is some TMI. I’m sure my husband and two teenagers will love it. LOL.  Let me tell you, it’s been quite a journey...very meaningful and hard all at the same time. No one can help you self reinvent & you can’t buy it from amazon. We have to do the work. I tell “all”. Join in the rant!

We are going to dig deep into the details of my journey, in my “midlife remix”... in my second half of life. Get up close and personal!

Some highlights:

-Wanting my own thing...my own passion project

-Scratching my midlife itchies

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an honest conversation about redefining and helping us to reimagine female aging through the lens of the Hollywood eye. I am chatting with former Fox newscasters, Lisa Breckenridge & Dorothy Lucey. I am discussing how these two guests self recreated after Hollywood was done with them for being past a certain age.

We dig deep into the details of Lisa’s & Dorothy’s journeys, in their second half of life. Get up close and personal! After you finish this episode, we have a cool “minisode” with Lisa and Dorothy. We do a run-through of their beauty, self recreation, and fitness secrets, Mildife’s Ten Things (mini episode).

Some highlights:

- Lisa & Dorothy’s experience being let go from their dream TV careers, for their age

- Both were able to do midlife pivots from the careers they loved

- Criticisms in Hollywood / “aging” in the industry

- Insights into their roles as journalists and how they compartmentalized the harsh realities of “bad news” in the world

- Morning routines

- Their love of meditation and breathing practices

- Some beauty, self-reinvention, and exercise tips

Looking forward to connecting with you! Here are some ways to connect with me!

49:25

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an open and honest conversation with teenage and puberty expert Vanessa Kroll Bennett. We discuss parenting strategies to help our teens re-enter the real world from the pandemic, in the midst of bodily and psychological roller coasters. And, we chat about facing those awkward conversations with our teens regarding sex, puberty, periods, porn, and masturbation. Vanessa is a mom of 4, author of the Uncertain Parenting Newsletter, and Founder and owner of Dynamo Girl. She discusses how she is able to have open conversations about puberty with her kids and starting her business from the ground up. We also talk about how her workshops have not only helped teens and their parents become more comfortable in their bodies, but also have given Vanessa a new career path in her second half of life.

We are going to dig deep into the details of Vanessa Kroll Bennett’s journey into her second half of life. We talk about the best approach to talking to your teen about sex and the changes they are starting to see. Vanessa talks about how to “re-do” parenting mistakes and teaches us some mindfulness tips to use before reacting to our teens’ comments or behaviors. This conversation is insightful, practical, and hands down so funny… She and I share personal stories and examples from our own puberty years.

Some highlights:

  • Living in a household where it was normal to openly talk about puberty & sex vs. having a house where it is more awkward
  • Workshops for teens, tweens, and parents/teaching kids about consent, anatomy, friendships, and hard feelings
  • Vanessa talks to her 11-year-old son about porn
  • The important takeaway Vanessa learned when she and her 17-year-old son visited a college...parenting “do-overs”

  • Sometimes naming something alone just makes you feel better
  • Don’t be embarrassed to talk about what’s going on with your menopausal symptoms
  • There is a benefit to some women taking SSRI’s to balance mood when they are experiencing tremendous mood symptoms
  • There is scientific data that can explain why our libido goes down

14 | Part 3 of 3 - Sex, Mood & Menopause in the Second Half of Life
54:06

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an honest and open conversation about the rollercoaster of perimenopause and menopause...finally learn the true definitions and differences between perimenopause and menopause and what we can do about it, in the second half of life with Dr. Shieva Ghofrany.  Dr. Shieva Ghofrany has been working as an OBGYN for over 21 years and herself has had multiple miscarriages, a weight loss surgery, both types of deliveries AND ovarian cancer… She is now the cofounder of Tribe Called V, a virtual platform that intends to disrupt women’s health teaching, by FINALLY breaking down ALL of the basics that affect women from their first periods through pregnancy and past menopause.

This crazy busy Connecticut OBGYN, through her huge IG platforms @biglovefiercejuju and @tribecalledv, has warmed the minds and hearts of so many women...teaching us what we need to know, but maybe didn’t know we should ask or were too embarrassed to ask... regarding all things vagina. It is Shieva’s DEEP belief that if she can “INCREASE women’s knowledge then she can DECREASE their anxiety” about their female health and bodies. Shieva is giving us the tools we need to become less anxious, less embarrassed, and more informed about perimenopause and menopausal symptoms and solutions in the second half of life.

We are going to dig deep into the details of Shieva’s journey into her second half of life. She discusses overcoming multiple miscarriages, surviving ovarian cancer, and her personal weight struggle. We chat many birth control options, hormone regulation, declining sex drive and normalizing perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms.

Some highlights:

  • Perimenopausal symptoms can start 10 years before you start going through menopause
  • Shieva discusses that it’s normal to feel anxious when experiencing perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms

  • Why she thinks it’s so important for women to be educated about vaginal health

  • Sometimes naming something alone just makes you feel better
  • Don’t be embarrassed to talk about what’s going on with your menopausal symptoms
  • There is a benefit to some women taking SSRI’s to balance mood when they are experiencing tremendous mood symptoms
  • There is scientific data that can explain why our libido goes down
  • Coconut oil is the best lubricant (not with condoms)

11 | Intensifying Sexual & Personal Energies In The Second Half Of Life with Dr. Laura Berman
01:24:03

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an honest and open conversation about Intensifying Sexual & Personal Energies in The Second Half of life with Dr. Laura Berman. Dr. Berman is a world-leading expert and therapist in sex, love, & relationships. She is an award-winning host of the nationally syndicated show, Uncovered Radio and the New York Times bestselling author of nine books. She hosted and starred in several TV shows including OWN’s In the Bedroom with Laura Berman, The Laura Berman Show, and Sexual Healing on Showtime. And, she has a new podcast launching called, The Language of Love. Dr. Berman is sharing the tools we need to intensify and re energize our personal connections and love lives in the second half of life.

We are going to dig deep into the details of Dr. Berman’s second half of life journey that started with a quest to heal herself emotionally and physically after receiving her own breast cancer diagnosis, the same year her mother passed away from breast cancer. After trying many different avenues, Dr. Berman turned to the field of quantum physics for answers.

In this episode, we discuss how Dr. Berman was able to find her second life path, post breast cancer and how she found the sweet spot between living in a conscious state of intention and high vibrational energy vs. low and dark energy. Laura has two intertwining life paths, one of professional career accomplishments and one of finding her own personal path to healing her internal trauma from her own life events. The second half of her life has led her into a fascinating path of discovering how to love and be loved through quantum physics energy work, which is exactly what she highlights for us in this episode.

Dr. Berman talks to us about the importance of tuning into our home frequencies, the feeling that we feel when we are truly at home with ourselves, so we put a more positive and loving energy out into the world when we connect with others. By personally creating the energy that we want to see in the world, that same energy will be shown back to us.  Dr. Berman even walks us through a guided meditation to help us tune into our home frequencies and reimagine how we can feel great within ourselves and the world (PLEASE SEE MEDITATION LINK BELOW) Tuning into our home frequencies also allows us to create happier and more loving relationships with all of the people around us.

After listening to this episode, you will be ready to recreate your relationship with a new outlook on how to connect with your partner and create a more intense and emotionally connected relationship.

Some highlights:

  • We can create our own reality through energy
  • How Laura’s second half of life is different through her quantum physics energy work, post death of her mother and her own breast cancer diagnosis
  • Traditional fix it methods weren’t working for her

10 | Being My Own WHY In The Second Half Of Life... First Solo Episode
35:05

In this very special and first episode of it’s kind for my podcast, I am doing a solo cast. I have been putting this episode off for so long...yes, self limiting beliefs...who am I to do this? Who will listen? Can I do it? It was scary to think about talking to myself without a guest. LOL. I did it.  Today, I am sharing some of my golden nuggets that we all can use today, to start being our own why and take that first step in the self recreation journey, in the second half of life.

In this episode, I talked about the turning point that made me realize that I wanted to create a podcast, and how my family helped tremendously along the way. In fact, it was my 14 (13 at the time) daughter, who was the one who started all of this. For my birthday, as a gift,  she asked many of my friends to write “three things they love about my mom”...upon opening this golden box,  I discovered many messages that made me realize I had a little something unique to me that I could put out into the world. There was a theme. I am an inquisitive information gatherer, known as The Flexible Neurotic. While I went back and forth over whether or not it should be a book or a podcast, it was my truly incredible friend, mentor and first guest, Angella Nazarian, who kick started my podcast journey...also, my incredible life coaches, Cari Rose and Ryan Haddon. By reaching out to family, friends and mentors, I was able to gather the information, support and expertise that I needed to start my self recreation journey. It takes a village. #womensupportingwomen.

“The Flexible Neurotic came to be when I realized my special skill is really being super neurotic, but balancing it out with just the right amount of flexibility, when I need to make a final decision...this is the definition of The Flexible Neurotic and the premise of the podcast.“

In this episode, I go on to talk about how this podcast turned into something I could have never imagined. It grew at a crazy fast rate, all thanks to my friends and even people I have met online who have resonated with this self recreation process. I also chat about the steps forward and detours in the journey. I share some of the people that I have met and connected with along the way and how they have continued to shape my self recreation process. I even cover a quick recap of some of the episodes that have really resonated with my listeners and me.

On a more personal level, you will hear how my husband and I met in high school and how it went down from there, to a 27 year relationship.

You will hear about me, why the podcast, how the podcast, how I learned to become my own why and take that first step... and what we can all do to take the next steps in our self recreation journeys, in the second half of life.

Join in the self recreation journey and listen!

He was able to pick up thousands of different techniques to create the Diamond methods that he uses today.

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an honest and open conversation about learning how to thrive, not just survive in our second half of life with Elissa Goodman. Elissa Goodman is a holistic nutritionist and lifestyle cleanse expert to an A-list roster of celebrities. After being diagnosed with cancer at 32 and then losing her husband to his own fight with cancer, Elissa dove deep into finding solutions for helping to cure cancer and many other health problems. 07 | Finding Your Center & Identity In The Second Half Of Life with Ryan Haddon
01:13:23

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an honest and open conversation about finding our center and bringing meaning and purpose into our second half of life with Ryan Haddon. Ryan Haddon is a certified life and spiritual coach, hypnotherapist, and certified meditation teacher with over 16 years of experience with clients around the world. She is giving us the tools we need to become more centered and even find our identity in the second half of life.

We are going to dig deep into the details of Ryan’s journey of finding her soul’s purpose, and how her transition from Hollywood, CA to a farm in Pennsylvania, her spiritual and mental tools & her meditation practice changed her center entirely.

In this episode, we talk about finding our anchors, noticing our triggers and even how there have been some silver linings that came out of our 9 months in quarantine. Ryan explains that we are often leaning out of center, or looking for the next new thing and never are truly content with where we are or what we have... She even teaches us the tools to help find our centers… which is often a very challenging task for parents whose kids were once their center.

Ryan teaches us about hypnosis and how hypnosis unlocks the unconscious state  when our brain is most impressionable and receptive to change. Hypnosis is similar to meditation, but instead of doing it alone, it is a guided meditation by a hypnotist or trained expert. Ryan gave me a hypnosis recording, during March Covid,  where I learned my “Sarah Milken Special” meditation to do twice a week... to guide me through the second half of life.  We talked about the fear of judgment, my self limiting beliefs and all other vulnerabilities that came with beginning my own self recreation journey, at age 45.  Ryan was able to create the perfect hypnosis recording for me.

After listening to this episode, you will be able to start thinking about finding your center and jump head first into the new year with tools you need to start recreating today, judgment free.

Some highlights:

  • How changing her mindset, considering her anchors, and other tools helped find her center
  • How raising kids the second time around has been different
  • Tools to find your center
  • How to find your triggers
  • How to find a meditation practice that works for you
  • Putting your relationship with you first
  • How the path to sobriety changed Ryan’s life
  • How to re-find your center when your kids were once your center

Golden Nuggets from the episode:

  • Find your center
  • Notice your triggers
  • Find a meditation practice
  • Give yourself permission to reinvent

05 | You Don't Have to Do It All, to Have It All with Eve Rodsky
01:25:53

Join me, Dr. Sarah Milken, in an open conversation about how you can have it all, but not physically do it all. How does a more fair and equal distribution of household and family duties sound? What household activities would you want to trade? Do you prefer dishwasher duties? Weekend laundry or weekend soccer duty? Our special podcast guest, Eve Rodsky and two of her biggest champions, Reese Witherspoon and Arianna Huffington say yes to all of this! It’s happening!

The invitation from our guest, Eve Rodsky, is for us all to ask ourselves what we would do if we had more time and space to reclaim & fewer household chores & obligations? With this Harvard Law graduate and organizational management expert and we are diving deep. This New York Times best selling author is Reese Witherspoon’s x Hello Sunshine’s book pick with her book, Fair Play - A Game Changing Solution For When You Have Too Much to do (and more life to live). Eve is creating a change movement in how we view women’s time...

She created the “Shit I Do” list by gathering hundreds of women’s daily to do lists from dishes to dog groomer appointments... to reading school emails. This was used to exemplify the time consuming work (invisible work) that women do to keep a family functioning. Spouses and partners are often unaware of the infinite tasks in a day. From this Sh*t I Do list, the Fair Play book and deck of cards was born.

Get your golden shit shovels ready as we uncover the golden nuggets and secret sauce to create fair and equal households with the expert herself, Eve Rodsky. We find the sweet spot in learning to create more equally distributed family and household workload schedules for all members... moms, women and even dads who can’t be responsible for everything.

In this episode, we learn how Eve’s personal experience shaped the way that she understands and views household dynamics. We chat about how her husband’s “you forgot the blueberries?” text ignited her movement, hence creating the framework for Fair Play. She talks about how growing up in a single mother household changed the way that she views the work that mothers do, and how it changed the way that she views the distribution of work in two-parent households.

Eve teaches us that our time is not infinite, and we should treat our time as diamonds - something so many of us have never done. Women’s time is equal to men’s time. Since women’s time is typically valued less than men’s time, and they are often left with a never ending to-do list, women often lose what Eve calls unicorn space -  the time where we can go and invest time and energy in our passions, uninterrupted.

This isn’t the time where you get a massage or watch your favorite tv show, but the time where you can actually pursue something you love. Women have lost the “right to be interesting”...they are occupied with the worries of their homes, children and spouses. Eve shines a spotlight and gives us the necessary reminder that we are important, interesting and valuable as well - an idea that we often lose in our households and children.

Eve gives us many tools to start communicating with our partners to recreate our households and strengthen our families, relationships and marriages. She walks us through how to re-evaluate all the tasks and chores that we do in the house, and how to communicate with our partner to restructure our time. She even teaches us how to take back our unicorn space, so we can rediscover our unique identities. She asks the important questions: Who am I now? Who was I? What makes me happy?

After listening to this episode, you will be able to better communicate with your partner, rediscover your unique identity and make time for more “unicorn space” - all while strengthening your relationships and family.

So men, and women, listen up if you want more sex and less nagging.

Some highlights:

  • You can have it all, but not do it all
  • Eve uses her Harvard law and organizational management degree lens to create a more equally distributed family and household workload for all members
  • How Eve’s childhood shaped her understanding of family dynamics
  • Eve explains her viral “Sh*t I do List” aka invisible work and emotional labor that women are faced with
  • How this “Sh*t I Do” turned into her best selling Fair Play book
  • What is unicorn space?
  • The sense of identity loss for women in their midlife
  • How unicorn time helps to recreate identity in your second half of life
  • Do you have permission to be unavailable?
  • How to get household management organized in 20 minutes a week

Golden Nuggets from the episode:

  • All time is created equal. Men’s time is equal to women’s time
  • Everyone’s time is diamonds, not sand
  • Find your unicorn space
  • Give yourself permission to be unavailable
  • Start where you are right now, be a game changer
  • Be intentional in what you do
