The Tylenol Murders: A Conversation with Unsealed's Christy Gutowski and Stacy St. Clair
01:00:36

In 1982, people in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs began dying after taking poisoned Tylenol. Today, the case remains unsolved. But it's far from cold.

Chicago Tribune investigative reporters Christy Gutowski and Stacy St. Clair recently came out with a podcast called Unsealed: The Tylenol Murders, along with a series of in-depth articles. The Murder Sheet sat down with Gutowski and St. Clair to talk about the case, and their intensive reporting process.

A Conversation with Gregg Olsen
00:48:47

Both of us first got interested in true crime not through podcasts but through books — and one of the best true crime writers working today is Gregg Olsen. He has produced many terrific titles. The first of his books that Kevin read was STARVATION HEIGHTS, an incredible true story of medical murder that happened back in 1911.

We recently got a chance to talk with Gregg about his career, how he researches his books and his newest title: AMERICAN MOTHER, which tells the true story of a troubled family who is at the heart of a cyanide murder case. You can find it at Barnes and Noble, Amazon or wherever you buy books.

Tanasi’s robust line of products is the result of those findings. This CBD+CBDa is 2X better than CBD alone not to mention better than over the counter ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin.

The Murder of Amanda Blackburn: The Sentencing of Larry Jo Taylor Jr.

NOTE: In the episode we mention that Drew Snyder represented the state at this hearing. We based this on an entry on mycase. We have been reliably informed that Mr. Snyder was in fact not present at the hearing. As soon as we can get confirmation of the identity of the prosecutor at the hearing, we will correct the episode.

A Conversation with Scott Turow
01:03:07

We have always been fans of Scott Turow. The lawyer and author not only writes enthralling legal thrillers like Presumed Innocent and The Last Trial but he has also done important work in the legal system — including helping getting a wrongful conviction in a rape-murder case overturned.

His newest novel, Suspect, came out last month. He joined us to talk about that novel (spoiler alert: it's a terrific read and we highly recommend it), his legal work, police "tightening" cases and the time the tables were turned and Turow found himself in the role of the accused man.

After it became increasingly clear that there was a catfish element to the Delphi murders, we decided to periodically feature interviews with professionals who specialize in that field– so that we can all be better educated about this troubling subject. This week we talk with Tony Godwin and Brandon Poor. Both men are Texas based police officers who specialize in Internet Crimes Against Children or ICAC.

They work tough cases involving pedophiles and- as you will hear- they speak with the knowledge and insight that only comes through direct experience.

They are also podcasters. They host CATFISH COPS, a program where they explore the topic of child exploitation with depth, insight and compassion. We highly recommend it. And we appreciate them taking time away from their busy schedules to talk with us.

The Delphi Murders: A Conversation with Brett and Alice from the Prosecutors
00:44:49

People have a lot of questions about what’s been happening in the Delphi case. What does it mean that Kegan Kline was temporarily transferred into the custody of the Indiana State Police? Is it possible Kegan Kline has made some sort of deal with prosecutors? Why would prosecutors even consider making a deal? Why did it take so long to arrest Kegan Kline after the raid on his home in 2017? And what about that probable cause affidavit to search Ron Logan’s property– does that mean Logan is guilty?

We decided to go to the experts to get some answers. Brett and Alice have a great deal of experience in criminal law and co host the Prosecutors, a popular podcast where they break down true crime cases in a fascinating and accessible way. We really appreciate the terrific legal analysis they apply to the cases they discuss– that is why we decided we really wanted to talk with them about the recent developments in Delphi.

The Delphi Murders: August 2022 Updates
00:30:58

Kegan Kline was temporarily and voluntarily transferred into the custody of Indiana State Police on Friday August 19, 2022. On August 23, we drove up to Peru, Indiana and witnessed state police searching the Wabash River. We understand that this search was related to the Klines, although we have no official confirmation. In this episode, we will also analyze our previous episode on the FBI's early mistake in the case.

This episode takes a break from our focus on restaurant homicides, and is part of our intermittent series of episodes on the Delphi case. If you have information on the Delphi murders, send your confidential tip to abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com or call 844-459-5786, 800-382-7537 or 765-564-2413.

You Never Can Forget: Ashley Flowers and the Emails
00:23:28

A few weeks back, we covered the saga of how serial plagiarist Ashley Flowers worked out a deal with Indiana State Police investigator Bill Dalton to get the exclusive right to access — and make money off of —the Burger Chef investigative files Dalton had been entrusted with.

To learn more about that sorry affair, please listened to "You Never Can Forget: The Fiasco" (https://tinyurl.com/5n82x5wn).

This week, we're back with more information on this mess, thanks to a records request that the ISP just (finally) completed. In this episode, we'll get into bizarre details about the Red Ball collaboration, like how Dalton and Flowers mocked other podcasters and planned trips to Idaho together. We'll also feature insights from Chris Davis, another podcaster who's covered the Burger Chef case.

Blood Ties: The Slaying of Salvatore “Sally Daz” Zottola
00:40:47

Organized crime figures are known for ordering vicious assaults and heinous murders. So when an alleged "wise guy" ended up in trouble a few years ago, authorities suspected that underworld in-fighting was behind it all . But the case of Sylvester "Sally Daz" Zottola ended in a horrific way that almost no one saw coming.

True crime researcher Stephen Popkin returns to help the Murder Sheet discuss this tangled, twisty case. He also authored this script. Email him at dvdjsteve@gmail.com.

You Never Can Forget: Ashley Flowers and the Fiasco
01:48:14

Ashley Flowers, the host of CRIME JUNKIE, is on a PR tour to promote a novel that she worked on with another writer. As part of that, ELLE magazine just published a long article referring to her as “the Queen of True Crime.” To our surprise, the Murder Sheet was also mentioned in that article.

The article gets into the history of crime junkie and it’s parent company Audiochuck, Flowers’s upbringing, and Flowers’ close relationship with Sarah Turney — a true crime podcaster who we’ll note has often weighed in publicly on ethical issues but has seemingly not spoken about the controversy around Flowers. Interesting given that she also sits on the board of Flowers’ nonprofit.

It discusses a bit of the criticism we leveled at her for RED BALL. That podcast, you will recall, focused on the Burger Chef murders. As part of it, Bill Dalton of the Indiana State Police gave Flowers the exclusive right to monetize criminal investigative files that even the families of the victims are not permitted to see. We are quoted in the piece as calling the resulting programs badly written copaganda– we stand by that criticism but also note there were far worse ethical transgressions involved in the production of that program.

In the same article, Flowers dismisses the plagiarism complaints against her. She says she did not use the work of other podcasters or paraphrase their words. She claims that “I didn’t take anyone’s work and make it my own.”

We do not believe that to be true. But we thought it made sense to let you decide for yourself. So, as a bonus episode, we are re presenting an episode we originally released late last year which goes into considerable detail on the plagiarism charges Flowers tries to brush aside and the long lasting real world harm caused by the Bill Dalton/ RED BALL affair. It permanently affected the willingness of the Indiana State Police to use media to publicize cold cases– and cost at least one grieving family the opportunity to have the story of their loved one reach a natrional audience.

The Delphi Murders: On Internet Predators: A Conversation with Dr. David Finkelhor
00:29:45

Researching and thinking about the Delphi case requires us all to think about dark subjects most people are not be familiar with– topics such as internet predators and child sexual abuse materials. We feel that it would help us all understand better what happened in Delphi back in 2017 if we were able to get more context in those areas. So we have decided to begin a series of interviews with experts who have spent their careers studying these matters in order to get the benefit of their knowledge.

We are beginning this endeavor by talking with David Finkelhor.

Dr. Finkelhor has been researching issues involving child victimization, child maltreatment and family violence since 1977– which is even before there was an internet. He is the Director of Crimes against Children Research Center, Co-Director of the Family Research Laboratory, Professor of Sociology, and University Professor, at the University of New Hampshire.

At the end of the episode, we will have a few words about next Tuesday’s episode as well as a bit of news about the future of the Murder Sheet.

Justice Denied: The Murder of Emmett Till

We would like to thank our sponsor Dear Brightly. We recently used the Dear Brightly service to try Night Shift- a dermatologist formulated tretimoin serum — and this stuff is terrific.

Tretinoin is actually the only FDA approved treatment for photoaging. Longterm exposure to the sun damages the skin, it causes fine lines and wrinkles big pores and dark spots. Tretinoin reverses that. Kevin and I saw that for ourselves when we used Night Shift. I am loving how my skin looks right now-- smaller pores, less noticeable fine lines

The catch is you can't walk into a store and buy a tretinoin serum. You need a doctors prescription. Dear Brightly will arrange for arrange for you to have a telehealth appointment with a doctor who will decide what formulation of tretinoin is best for you. After that, your serum will be straight to your door.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in go to Dearbrightly dot com and if you enter the promo code MSHEET you will get 15 percent off your first order.

The Delphi Murders: Ronald Logan and the Klines
00:38:48

Today we are going to discuss both the case against Ronald Logan and the case against the Klines-- and we will also explain why we feel that the case against the Klines is more interesting.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have received reports that people in the Delphi area have begun to tear down posters about the case because they feel the revelation of the Ronald Logan search warrant means that the case has been solved. Others act as if the information about Logan somehow makes the case against the Klines much weaker.

In this episode we discuss why we feel that both of those views are wrong and offer a strong reminder that this case is not solved. We need to remember to keep our eyes open and continue to look for justice for Abby and Libby.

A Talk with Investigative Journalist Jerry Mitchell
00:52:25

Jerry Mitchell is the sort of journalist other reporters dream of becoming. Through his investigative work, he has helped crack several cold cases from the civil rights era- and that's not all. He also helped find and bring to justice a serial killer. He tells us all of the stories and more in this episode.

His terrific memoir-- RACE AGAINST TIME-- is available at Amazon and wherever else you may buy books. We highly recommend it!

A Conversation with Michael Arntfield About 'How to Solve a Cold Case'
00:57:06

We've talked to you about quite a few cold cases on the Murder Sheet. Now, it's time to get into how these sensitive, often-negleceted cases should be handed.

For today's episode, we interviewed criminologist and author Dr. Michael Artnfield about these unsolved cases, which he delves into in his latest book How to Solve a Cold Case: And Everything Else You Wanted To Know About Catching Killers. Before founding the Western University Cold Case Society and becoming a professor at Western University in Canada, Arntfield served as a police officer and detective in London, Ontario. Now he also works with the Murder Accountability Project to track possible serial killers.

Hunting the I-70 Killer: Part Two
00:36:54

The I-70 killer, whose identity remains unknown, murdered at least six people in 1992. But there could be more victims out there.

In this episode we speak with Michael Crooke, an Indianapolis detective who worked on one of the cases definitively linked to the serial killer. We'll get into topics like the possible link between this series and the murders committed by Harry Edward Greenwell, the I-65 Killer, and the possibility that cases like the 1991 murder of Hardee's employee Peggy Cox could be connected.

Hunting the I-70 Killer: Part One
00:30:36

During a period of about a month back in 1992, a murderer went on a crime spree. He took the lives of six different people in five incidents in three different states, Many of his targets were located close to I 70, the highway that stretches east- west from Utah all the way to Maryland. Because of this, he soon earned the name "the I 70 Killer." His real identity remains unknown — though police investigators still work tirelessly to unmask him.

In this episode we speak with Michael Crooke, the detective who caught the first of the i 70's confirmed murders — the slaying of Robin Fuldauer in Indianapolis, Indiana. He walks us through all of the incidents in the month long spree and offers insights into what might have motivated the killer in his terrible crimes.

The Delphi Murders: On Internet Predators
00:53:06

Recent developments in the Delphi murders indicate that an online predator may have played a role in the double homicide of 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams. Predators have been known to use the internet to catfish, groom, and prey upon underage victims.

In this episode, the Murder Sheet will interview Cathy Frye about one such case that happened in Arkansas in 2002. A 47-year-old man named David Fuller posed as a young man online. He used that persona to grow close to a 13-year-old girl named Kacie Woody. Then, the unthinkable happened.

But a clash between two veterans who served in the American Revolution will end in a deadly confrontation. And the tragedy wouldn't stop there.

A Night Out at Vitello’s: Robert Blake and the Murder of Bonnie Lee Bakley
00:29:12

On the evening of May 4, 2001, actor Robert Blake took his new bride Bonnie Lee Bakley out to dine at Vitello's, a restaurant in Los Angeles' Studio City. On the surface, it looked like the pair shared a romantic evening. But by the end of the night, Bakley would be dead.

The scandalous, chilling details that would come out about the marriage between the star-chaser and the washed-up celebrity would prove to be tabloid fodder. But no one could guess the outcome of two trials that sought to hold Blake accountable for Bakley's murder — that proved to be a twist ending worthy of a Hollywood thriller.

The Delphi Murders: Father and Son
00:29:18

Just a few months ago, Kegan Anthony Kline’s name was publicly linked to the Delphi murders. But to learn more about this 27-year-old man and his connection to the unsolved killings of Liberty German and Abigail Williams, it’s important to know about Kline’s family and upbringing. This week, the Murder Sheet ventures up to Peru, Indiana to uncover some of the crimes perpetrated by Tony Kline, Kegan’s father.

The Delphi Murders: An Interview with Carroll County Sheriff Candidate Mike Thomas
00:48:16

There's ’s a new Sheriff in town– or at least there will be soon. Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby– who has been running the investigation into the murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams cannot run for the office again because of term limit restrictions.

At the moment, no one has filed for the Democratic nomination and three men have filed for the Republican nomination– Mike Thomas, Tony Liggett and Lee Hoard.

It is inevitable that the way the Delphi murder investigation has been handled or mishandled will become an issue in this race. And– of course– the man who wins the election will end up having a tremendous impact on the future of the case. Anyone who cares about getting justice for Libby and Abby really needs to follow this campaign.

Considering that, we decided to reach out to candidate Mike Thomas. He gave us his thoughts on what’s been done in the investigation– and what he would do differently if he became the man in charge.

The Donut Shop Killers: A Family Gone Wrong
00:56:22

We've told you all about the Donut Shop Killers. How Sherman McCrary and his son-in-law Carl Taylor traveled the countries with their families in tow, robbing, raping, and killing as they went.

In this episode, we're switching things up. Instead of focusing on the what, we'll talk about the why. We'll be diving into the psychological factors that could spur a family to go on a murderous rampage.

Please check out Wondery’s "Families Who Kill: The Donut Shop Murders" wherever you listen to podcasts. And if you enjoy the show, leave a five-star review (and feel free to shout out the Murder Sheet).

The Donut Shop Killers: The Fallout
00:35:27

When we covered the Donut Shop murders last year, we didn't get into one particularly disturbing element of the case. When Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor embarked on their violent, cross-country rampage, they didn't just have their wives in tow. They brought along Ginger McCrary-Taylor's young sons as well. This week, we present the conclusion of our talk with Jerry Nations, one of those sons. Jerry shares the story of what it was like to reunite with Ginger as an adult — and will reveal the surprising truth of what she did for a living. .

Thanks again to Jerry Nations for being so open and generous with his time. Please check out Wondery’s "Families Who Kill: The Donut Shop Murders" wherever you listen to podcasts. And if you enjoy the show, leave a five-star review (and feel free to shout out the Murder Sheet).

The Delphi Murders: Vegas Dreams
00:21:24

Correction: In this episode, we said that Tony Kline deleted his Facebook. That was incorrect. It appears that Kline blocked Murder Sheet co-creator Kevin Greenlee when he reached out for comment, so it only appeared that his page was gone. We regret the error.

On Facebook, Kegan Anthony Kline posted that he was starting a new job in Las Vegas on the day that Abby Williams and Liberty German were murdered in Delphi, Indiana. But does Kline's Vegas alibi hold up? In this episode, the Murder Sheet speaks with business owners and casino employees to attempt to get to the truth.

The Burger Chef murders have touched so many lives. So we're going to wrap up this regular season of "You Never Can Forget" by introducing you to some voices who can speak to how this case impacted them, and provide our audience with valuable context about this case.

In this episode, we'll speak to a Speedway resident who saved another man's life during the town's series of horrific bombings, a Burger Chef expert and podcaster, the assistant manager who helped run the restaurant on Crawfordsville Road after the murders, and the young employee who discovered that his coworkers were missing.

You Never Can Forget: The Emails
00:20:48

You Never Can Forget: The Driver
01:00:51

On the night that four young people vanished from the Burger Chef in Speedway, Indiana, something odd happened just down the road. A Speedway officer pulled over a young man who we'll call Terry. During that stop, Terry threw a .38 caliber gun out the window of his car. To this date, questions about whether that strange incident was connected to the Burger Chef murders have abounded.

Well, we actually found Terry. And we talked to him.

In this episode of the Murder Sheet, Terry will speak about his memories of that night, and the impact this case has had on his life.

November 17, 1978 started out as an average Friday night for Kirk Thompson.

You Never Can Forget: The Witness
01:01:38

Should the sketches in the Burger Chef murders be thrown out altogether? In this episode of the Murder Sheet, we'll reveal information that we feel indicates that the sketches are completely unreliable.

Mary Rein is an important figure in the Burger Chef case. She's one of the teenaged witnesses who said she saw two white men — one bearded, one clean-shaven — behind the restaurant on the night of the disappearances. Rein is also an acquaintance of Allen Pruitt and his friend David Adams, who ended up at the Dunkin' Donuts next door that night. Over the years, she's struggled with a drug habit, and a recurring feeling of guilty.

In this episode of the Murder Sheet, Mary Rein will go on the record about the case. She will also reveal that she purposely flubbed the description of the clean-shaven man she said she saw behind the Burger Chef that night.

The Delphi Murders: Kayla's Story
00:29:15

A 27-year-old Indiana man named Kegan Anthony Kline has been brought up in connection with the 2017 murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams in Delphi, Indiana. He currently stands accused of using social media to catfish and coerce young girls.

This week, the Murder Sheet spoke with a woman named Kayla. She told us that Kline cat-fished her when she was just 12. Over the next few years, he would threaten and abuse her online. In one chilling anecdote, Kayla recalled meeting Kline at a public park. She said he became furious with her for bringing along a friend.

Due to the disturbing allegations contained in this episode, we submitted a tip to authorities using the Delphi hotline, with Kayla's permission.

The Delphi Murders: Kegan Anthony Kline
00:43:44

Who is Kegan Anthony Kline? On December 6, 2021, Indiana State Police brought up a profile known only as "anthony_shots" in connection with the Delphi case. The following day, WISH-TV connected the 27-year-old Indiana man with that profile.

Less than two weeks after the murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams, investigators raided a residence connected to Kline in Peru, Indiana. In August of 2020, he was hit with a number of felony charges for child molestation and child pornography.

But who exactly is this person? We decided to find out by talking with Dylan Howell, who counted Kline as a friend growing up. Howell spoke to us about his shock over the charges against Kline, possible red flags, and the chance that Kline's crimes are linked to what happened to Abby and Libby in Delphi.

You Never Can Forget: The Fiasco
01:45:38

There's a reason why we rarely speak about the modern day investigation into the Burger Chef. We have no confidence in the abilities of the officer who is currently tasked with looking into this high-profile quadruple homicide. And today, in the interest of transparency, we're going to tell you exactly why that is.

Bill Dalton is the current lead investigator on the Burger Chef for the Indiana State Police. Ashley Flowers is a millionaire serial plagiarist who also makes true crime podcasts, most notably Crime Junkie. Together, they came up with Red Ball, a four-part podcast on the Burger Chef murders that ran in November of 2019. It was badly-written copaganda, but the backstory behind the series is even worse.

You see, Flowers handed over complete editorial control of her show to the state police. In exchange for this puffery, Dalton allowed Flowers to exclusively read and monetize investigative case files that not even the families of the victims have ever been permitted to see. And the Indiana State Police collectively shrugged their shoulders at the misconduct.

In this episode, we'll get into Flowers' reputation within the true crime community. We'll talk to true crime podcasters Robin Warder and Esther Ludlow, who Flowers plagiarized, as well as journalist Cathy Frye, who blew the whistle on the scandal. We'll tell you about all the unprofessional nonsense between Flowers and Dalton that Kevin witnessed firsthand. And we'll break down why exactly all of this should horrify anyone who cares about unsolved cold cases in Indiana.

Because, to put it bluntly, the ISP seem to have learned the wrong lesson from this mess.

You Never Can Forget: The Gang
00:37:28

There's a haunting story in the Burger Chef case, one that you've likely heard before.

A guy named David Cathcart rolled up to a bar in Greenwood, Indiana on November 18, 1978, the night after the employees vanished, before anyone knew the kids were dead. He shot off his mouth about the disappearances of the four Burger Chef employees, telling his fellow patrons that they'd be released unharmed. Later, after being interrogated by police, he revealed that he was part of a robbery gang that had been casing the Speedway Burger Chef.

In the years since, the robbery gang theory has become one of the most prominent theories in the entire case. And it's true that Timothy Piccione, Gregg Steinke, and John Defibaugh perpetrated a number of armed robberies around Indianapolis in the seventies. A few even targeted Burger Chef restaurants.

But the Murder Sheet has uncovered new court documents that raise questions about the story involving Cathcart. In this episode, we'll being laying out the robbery gang theory, but also pointing out where we feel it falls short.

You Never Can Forget: The Robberies
00:28:19

On November 17, 1978, four young workers vanished from a fast food restaurant in Speedway, Indiana. Two days later, their bodies were found in the woods of Johnson County. The Burger Chef murders remain unsolved to this day. We still don't know who killed employees Jayne Friedt, Ruth Shelton, Danny Davis, and Mark Flemmonds, or why.

In this episode of "You Never Can Forget," an investigative miniseries from the Murder Sheet, we'll be sharing the stories of two people who became victims of the robbery gang that former Indiana State Police investigator Stony Vann believes may be responsible for the Burger Chef murders.

In this episode of "You Never Can Forget," an investigative miniseries from the Murder Sheet, we'll be speaking about the case with a friend and fellow researcher. This episode will serve as a primer, where we'll go over all the major theories that we covered on "You Never Can Forget" last year.

On November 17, 1978, four young employees began the night shift at the Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana. By midnight, they had vanished, never to be seen alive again. Two days later, their bodies were found in a wooded area in Johnson County.

But who killed Jayne Friedt, Ruth Shelton, Danny Davis, and Mark Flemmonds? Last year, the Murder Sheet launched an investigative miniseries on the case: "You Never Can Forget." This year, we're dropping more episodes, and taking an even closer look at this heinous crime.

The Delphi Murders: Double Homicides: Part One
00:36:08

Note: This episode contains disturbing content, including descriptions from court documents on a child murder case. Jump from 24:00 to 28:15 to miss these upsetting descriptions.

In 2017, someone murdered Liberty German and Abigail Williams in broad daylight. The double homicide of these two young girls remains unsolved, leaving their families and wider community of Delphi Indiana without answers.

Speculation about the Delphi murders has run rampant on social media. But there’s little concrete information out there.

To better understand this case, the Murder Sheet has selected two solved killings that bear some surface similarities to the Delphi murders. Each case involved two underaged victims who were stalked and murdered in a public park.

In this episode, we will wrap up the story of Francis Henry Bloeth, the "Other Long Island Serial Killer." Bloeth was arrested for three murders and sentenced to die for his crimes. But his story has a rather unexpected ending.

The Murder Sheet was also able to interview John Jay College of Criminal Justice Professor Robert McCrie about this topic. We enjoyed our thought-provoking conversation with him on the subjects of mass incarceration and prison reform, and we hope you do too.

Fear came to Long Island in 1959. Fear in the form of a single man, one who was set upon terrorizing and killing restaurant employees.

By the end of the summer, three innocent workers were dead. But the notoriety of the crimes faded over the decades. You may have heard of the Long Island Serial Killer, but you've likely never heard of this one.

On February 1, 1991, Peggy Cox was busy taking drive-thru orders at the Hardee's in Franklin, Tennessee. It was her 49th birthday, but she was hard at work at the restaurant. The Bear and the Bird
00:31:09

In this episode of the Murder Sheet, we're going to switch things up a bit.

Instead of diving into a single restaurant homicide, we'll split our attention between two remarkable cases. One took place in Chicago in the nineteenth century. The other happened in Harlem in the forties.

Rather oddly, despite occurring around six decades apart, both of these killings involved drunken rages, seedy bars, and unusual animals.

Looking for Roseann Quinn
00:38:42

On New Year's Day in 1973, a woman met a man at a New York City bar called W.M. Tweeds. They hit it off and went back to her place. But the story doesn’t end there. The woman — a 28-year-old teacher named Roseanne Quinn — was never seen alive again. At least, not by anyone other than her killer.

In a way, Roseanne Quinn has died many deaths. First, at the hands of a vicious, violent man. And then again and again and again over the years, as journalists, writers, and filmmakers smeared her name and overlooked her humanity for the sake of scaring other women.

The Golden Pheasant Murders
00:42:00

Late on a May night in 1930, someone crept into the Golden Pheasant Inn.

The local restaurant was popular for its chicken dish, and for being a haven where Wisconsinites could blow off steam with slot machines, booze, and sex workers. But the intruder wasn't there for any of that. He was after owner John Van Veghel and waitress Lucille Birdsall, a couple sound asleep in their bed.

The subsequent murders shook the small town of Preble, Wisconsin, situated on the outskirts of Green Bay. Rumors began to fly. But over ninety years later, we still don't know who killed John and Lucille.

This week, the Murder Sheet interviews Sergeant Mike Knetzger of the Green Bay Police Department.

Check out Mike's book on the Golden Pheasant murders, and other local cases here (shorturl.at/akFK5). If you have information on this case, send tips to Mike.Knetzger@greenbaywi.gov.

The Crime of the Century
00:29:47

On June 25, 1906, three shots rang out at Mam'zelle Champagne, a musical revue playing in a restaurant space atop Madison Square Garden. Millionaire Harry Thaw had just killed famed architect Stanford White, in front of rows and rows of witnesses and a stageful of chorus girls. The murder became known as the crime of the century, and word of it spread throughout New York society and beyond.

Thaw would claim that he had killed White to avenge his wife Evelyn Nesbit. She said that White had raped her. But later it would come out that Thaw had a dark history of his own, one filled with sexually charged violence.

The Delphi Murders: A Conversation with the Captain from True Crime Garage
01:18:39

The Delphi murders have become a somewhat controversial topic in true crime circles, with adherents of different theories occasionally clashing online.

True Crime Garage's recent run of three episodes on the Delphi murders — titled "Under the Bridge" — added to the controversy. Hosts Nic and the Captain, along with an anonymous Reddit researcher, discussed a theory involving several witnesses in the case. Supporters found the theory interesting. Critics felt that the show pointed the finger at an easily-identifiable private citizen without much evidence.

The Murder Sheet sat down with the Captain to get his side of the story. This episode features our interview with the True Crime Garage host, as well as some statements from the anonymous Redditor behind the theory.

The Delphi Murders: The Sketches
00:31:43

What is going on with the sketches in the Delphi murders? In 2017, police released a sketch of an older man. Two years later, they came out with a different sketch, depicting a younger, baby-faced man.

This episode takes a break from our focus on restaurant homicides, and is part of our intermittent series of episodes on the Delphi case. We'll go over a timeline of the two sketches, and share our blunt opinions on how police have handled this information.

The Church’s Chicken Murder: Justice for Roderick Clemons
00:30:24

On January 13, 1991, Roderick Clemons clocked in for his shift at a Church's Chicken restaurant in Akron, Ohio. The 26-year-old assistant manager was working hard for a promotion, despite his reservations about the fast food joint's rough neighborhood. Unfortunately, Roderick never made it home that night. And nearly 30 years later, we still don't know who brutally murdered him.

This week, listen to Murder Sheet interview journalists Stephanie Warsmith and Paula Schleis about the case. They're the reason we heard about Roderick's case in the first place — they recently covered the murder in an in-depth article for the Akron Beacon-Journal.

Stephanie works as a reporter for the Akron Beacon-Journal. After Paula retired from the paper, she started the Ohio Mysteries podcast. These two reporters are currently in the midst of publishing Unresolved, a Beacon-Journal series on Akron-area cold cases.

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Discovery
00:30:38

After the Chicago Police Department arrested 19-year-old Maurice Harris for the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders, prosecutors went about trying to make a case against the teenager.

Attorney Ian Barney had initially signed on to represent Maurice Harris in his brutality suit against the cops. Now, the lawyer found himself working to defend his client from murder charges. Barney was convinced of Harris' innocence — which is not as common a phenomenon in the world of defense attorneys as you might hope. But proving that Harris wasn't a killer would be easier said than done.

In the Shadow of Nadia: The Corner Store
00:29:59

When the Chicago Police Department announced that they'd arrested Maurice Harris for the March 30, 2017 quadruple homicide at Nadia's Fish & Chicken Grill, they made sure to talk at length about the 19-year-old's juvenile record.

But they still failed to disclose a few key details. Namely, that their prime suspect was still in the process of suing their department for brutality. Five years earlier, two Chicago police officers had grabbed Harris off the street. They asked him where they could buy drugs, then punched him in the face. Then, things got even worse.

Join the Murder Sheet's Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee in the second episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," a new miniseries investigating the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders. In the Shadow of Nadia: The Murders
00:22:07

On a spring day four years ago, a gunman burst into a restaurant in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood. He opened fire, killing two young men in the eatery, and a pair of brothers attempting to flee the scene.

Many questions remain about the murders that occurred on March 30, 2017 in Nadia's Fish & Chicken Grill. The sudden massacre happened in the midst of a spate of killings in the South Shore. Police quickly identified a local suspect: 19-year-old Maurice Harris. He had just lost his father to gun violence, and police hosted a press conference declaring that their suspect was likely out for vengeance.

But the case was far from over. As it turns out, the Chicago Police Department failed to disclose some key details about Harris, details that would have major implications for the case.

Join the Murder Sheet's Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee in the first episode of "In the Shadow of Nadia," a new miniseries investigating the Nadia's Fish & Chicken murders. High's Ice Cream Homicides: Covering the Case with Small Town Big Crime's Courteney Stuart
00:24:00

In 1967, two young women working at High's Ice Cream in Staunton, Virginia were shot to death at work. Decades later, one of their coworkers, Sharron Smith, confessed on her deathbed to the killings.

But that wasn't the end of the story. For some, it was just the beginning. William "Bill" Thomas, a man who had been acquitted of one of the murders, brought a lawsuit against Staunton itself, after living under a cloud of suspicion for years.

Courteney Stuart had previously edited stories about the High's confession for The Hook, a local Charlottesville paper. Then, she found herself reporting on the Thomas lawsuit. She spoke with us about what it was like on the ground, covering the aftermath of an explosive small-town case.

And check out Courteney's own true crime podcast — Small Town Big Crime — wherever you listen to podcasts. It delves into the shocking 1985 murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom, and the subsequent arrest of their daughter Elizabeth and her University of Virginia classmate Jens Soering.

Williams spoke with us about the multi-state investigation into the case, the tragic aftermath of the grocery shop shooting that put a halt to the killers' reign of terror, and the experience of being played by true crime icon Robert Stack on Police Story.

Special thanks to Don and his wife Kathi!

The Donut Shop Killers
00:25:18

On early autumn night in 1971, two creepy men visited Winchell's Donut Shop in Salt Lake City. Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor sipped on coffee, and directed profane remarks at other customers. Then, when the shop had cleared out, they kidnapped Sheri Martin, the young clerk on duty.

It was the beginning of a multi-state robbery and rape and murder spree for the men and their families. At times, McCrary and Taylor even brazenly committed their sexual crimes on women as their own wives sat by, quietly watching.

Law enforcement figured out relatively quickly that the binge of violence and sexual sadism was the work of one group of perpetrators.  But how many innocents would suffer and die before detectives identified the killers?

The San Ysidro McDonald's Massacre
00:27:05

On a warm afternoon in the summer of 1984, James Huberty, a disturbed man with a gun decided to go hunting humans. He ended up in a popular neighborhood McDonald's, where he shot to death 21 people-- including a truck driver nearing retirement, two young boys taking a break from a bike ride and and a teenage mother with her infant in her arms.

Panicked people inside the restaurant play dead and hide in closets, praying the police will mount a rescue before the gunman discovers them. But the SWAT team is stuck in traffic-- will more people die before help finally arrives?

Shootout at the Carbarn
00:25:42

Early on a summer morning in 1919, cops and robbers faced off in Sioux City, Iowa.

The showdown kicked off at the Carbarn, an unassuming eatery dedicated to the city's streetcar workers.

Leading the charge on the side of the law was Detective James Garfield Britton, a veteran officer who'd lost his job as police chief over rising crime rates. The bandits were captained by one Donald "Red" Burzette, a brigand among bootleggers who often resorted to violence to steal loot.

That morning, both sides exchanged around 17 gunshots in 10 seconds. But who was left standing in the Carbarn when the shooting stopped?

Special thanks to Haley Aguirre for her insight and research help.

The Boccaccio's Massacre: Part Two
00:22:31

Who killed four Bocaccio's employees in the wilds of Florida over four decades ago? Why has the case remained unsolved for so long? And what exactly can be done to change that?

This follow-up episode looks into some of the suspects who've been discussed in connection with the case over the years. From drug connections to unwitting recognitions, these are the theories that have swirled around the case for years.

We'll also look into some striking similarities between the Bocaccio's massacre, and the Burger Chef murders. In both instances, four employees were forced out of the business, driven several miles away, and killed in a remote, wooded area (with a .38 gun involved in both crimes). If you need a refresher on the Burger Chef case, we cover it in the first 10 episodes of the Murder Sheet.

Lastly, we'll delve into the importance of investigative agencies devoting resources to solving cold cases. To learn more about the unsolved murder of Scott Burnham's cousin Ann Harmeier, follow Who Killed Ann? on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

After the Borderline
00:24:56

After murdering 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Ian David Long turned his gun on himself and took his own life. With the killer dead and beyond the reach of earthly justice, one might imagine there would be no role for an investigative agency like the FBI to play in the case.

But there was.

This episode of the Murder Sheet focuses on a little known division of the FBI which concentrates on helping those left behind after a tragedy, victims who need more from the justice system than what can be delivered in a courtroom.

You Never Can Forget: The Brother
00:32:18

When investigators realized that two of the victims in the Burger Chef murder case had brothers with troubling connections to the Indiana underworld, they began to wonder if the ultimate answer to the crime might be found much closer to home than anyone previously suspected.

On this episode of the Murder Sheet, we take a close look at Kevin Flemmonds-- who pled guilty in a drug related homicide-- and Jimmy Friedt-- who was convicted of drug related charges. Is it possible that the shadowy activities of either of these men played a role in the deaths of their siblings?

You Never Can Forget: The Robbers
00:32:35

Could the murders of the four young Burger Chef employees have gone down over a few hundred bucks? It's hard for some to believe, but it's the theory that former Indiana State Police detective Stony Vann came to hold after nearly two decades of work on the Burger Chef case.

In this week's episode, the Murder Sheet sits down with robbery gang theory expert and retired ISP detective Todd McComas of the 10-41 podcast. Together, we'll delve into the prolific robbery crew that targeted Burger Chefs in the months before the murders.

Donald Forrester, a man with a long history of violence, confessed to the Burger Chef murders not once but twice — providing details that some investigators claimed had never before been publicly released. Yet neither he nor the other men he implicated ever faced criminal charges for the crime.

Was this a failure of the criminal justice system? Or did the mistake lie elsewhere, with the investigators who devoted so much time and resources to pursuing a lead that left them doing little more than running in circles?

You Never Can Forget: The Backbone
00:35:48

Allen Pruitt was more than a witness in the Burger Chef case.

He told police in 1981 that he almost became a victim himself, saying that he barely escaped the two killers the day after the murders. He said that he ran for his life through the woods after Tim Willoughby and Jeff Reed lured him out to a lonely country road called the Devil's Backbone.

But a deposition from a different police informant concerning yet another unsolved murder upended Pruitt's version of events.

All these years later, questions still remain. Was Pruitt's initial statement a lie? Did he witness a missing man and the King of the Snake Pit abduct the four victims from the restaurant? What exactly did his eyes take in as he staggered toward the Burger Chef on the night of November 17, 1978?

You Never Can Forget: The Creek
00:30:01

Could a missing man accused of killing his girlfriend be responsible for the Burger Chef murders? Or is he yet another victim?

This episode covers one of the most confounding theories in the Burger Chef case. In 1981, Indiana State Police detectives Jim Cramer and Donovan Lindsay received a call from a jailhouse counselor. A young man was claiming to have information on the Burger Chef murders — an eyewitness account, in fact.

Allen Pruitt went on to tell police he saw two men abduct the employees from the restaurant three years before. And he named names, telling detectives exactly who he saw force the four victims out of the Burger Chef.

But revelations from yet another informant ultimately throw everything about Pruitt's story into question.

Here's a link to Donna McIntyre's group Missing and Not Forgotten. In the years since her friend Mary Ann Higginbotham vanished, Donna has worked as a tireless advocate for victims.

Burger Chef Murders Trailer: The Murder Sheet Presents "You Never Can Forget"
00:03:50

On November 17, 1978, four young employees began the night shift at the Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana. By midnight, they had vanished, never to be seen alive again. Two days later, their bodies were found in a wooded area in Johnson County.

To this day, no one has been convicted of the Burger Chef murders, as they came to be known. But the young victims — Jayne, Ruth, Danny, and Mark — and the brutal way they died have not been forgotten. The unsolved case continues to haunt loved ones, investigators, and the communities of Speedway and the greater Indianapolis area.

Brand new podcast Murder Sheet will launch with an inaugural six-part miniseries delving into the Burger Chef murders. Titled "You Never Can Forget," the miniseries will debut on November 17.

Cohosts Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee will be taking a close look at the facts of the case, and a number of twisty, fraught theories that have arisen over the years. Kevin is a lawyer from Broad Ripple who began researching the case in 2016 after coming across the online community dedicated to discussing the murders. He now represents the sister of one of the victims. Áine is a journalist from New York who became obsessed with the case while writing a feature story on the murders for Insider

After the six-part series concludes, Murder Sheet will continue as a weekly podcast focusing on different crimes and topics in the world of criminal justice. The show's first season will cover the phenomenon of restaurant homicides and shine a spotlight on the violent underbelly of the fast food industry.

The podcast's title is a reference to the spreadsheet of around 1,000 homicides involving restaurants, bars, and other eateries that Kevin and Áine have compiled, starting with 17th century tavern shootouts and ending with the modern rage slayings that often occur in burger joints.
