”A Cold Winter Night”
02:14:02
Happy Memorial Day. This is the day we pay homage to all those who didn’t come home.
Tisha and Damo show up on this special Memorial Day Weekend episode! Damo starts off by addressing the “Diversity” statements from the last episode and making sure that it was clear we he and Damon stands on the topic. Speaking of Damon, congrats on being selected for Master Chief, now we wait. Or do we pick orders? Or do we wait as we pick orders? Who knows? Congrats to everyone that heard their names or received the phone call. Memorial Day is observed and the reason we celebrate is discussed. Condolences to the family of Staff Sgt. Lonel Springs Sr., who recently died due to self imposed afflictions, calling out leadership errors, during his last Facebook live that went viral last week. Tisha remembers Tina Turner. Weekend plans are discussed. Damo talks about his last day in the office and his going-away event. Philadelphia just banned “Pooh Shiesty masks,” and of course Damo covers this. Somehow this conversation leads to a retelling of a military housing party story. Saint (Damo’s dog) finally gets his “15 minutes of fame” with Damo ranting about being a “dog parent.” The main story of today is Tisha’s career. As we head into her last week in the Navy, we wanted to give her the proper send off, highlighting career highs, lows, and favorite mentors throughout her 20 year tenure in the United States Navy. Thank you Tisha for your honorable service! Fair winds and following seas. These topics and more are covered in this episode. On this episode, we are joined by special guest, Michael “Mongo” Minotto, active duty Master-at-Arms Master Chief, and creator of ‘Team Before Self.’ The guys open the episode with some “morning routine” talk. Mongo makes a bold statement about “diversity” and they dig into the meaning of the statement. Damon and Damo define what diversity means to the them. Mongo reflects on his history in the Marine Corps and experiences during the Gulf War. Mongo talks about the importance of having honest mentors. “Am I getting an award for this?” The guys discuss recognition and the importance of not “devaluing” awards. How valuable is Sea Duty for a Master-At-Arms when it comes to career progression? Damo asks Mongo about his path to Master Chief. What made Mongo go from a Marine to a Navy Sailor. Do Better: Damo talks about what motivates him. Damon discuss the “blue bus” in Japan. The trio talks about being unafraid to lead and have hard conversations with your Sailors. Mongo talks about attention to detail and self accountability. How did ‘Team Before Self’ start? What is the purpose of it? ”Part of the Problem”
01:50:07
All smoke no gas! We are on b.s. all episode! To our sophisticated listeners, go ahead and skip this one. We are having some fun on this episode. Damo checks in with Damon and Tisha to see about their recent activities on the internet. The trio discusses a clip from a recent episode of the Joe Budden Podcast about the Navy being seen as the “soft” branch of the military. Next up, those estranged family members that ask to borrow money every time they see you. Being in the military does not make us millionaires. Shout out to all of our new followers on TikTok. PTSF had a mini moment in the comments. Damon owes Aviation Department an explanation. We hope it’s accepted. We do not want any smoke with Aviation! Damo highlights the “one guy who works in the ship’s office.” Much love to the ladies, these are all jokes. Damon went to a Lil Wayne concert but Lil Wayne didn’t. Damon tells exactly how he feels about this. Damo addresses an irresponsible article that was shared on the PTSF Facebook page. Are “No Shave Chits” unfair? Is it easier for a black Sailor to get a chit for PFB than a white Sailor? Have you ever been told by your Chief that you wouldn’t get in much trouble at NJP and you got the book thrown at you? Everyone shares their “DRB” stories. The Navy recently welcomed 'Sage', an operational stress control dog, aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford for deployment. The story of Master Chief Charlie gets highlighted. Damon has an issue with LCS manning. Is there any value in having a command motorcycle safety program in today’s time? What’s going on in schools these days? The team tackles another round of “questions from listeners.” Damo details a few things that came up in a recent leadership panel that he sat on. ”I Committed It To Memory”
02:13:31
Let’s start this one with a little bit of transparency. Who the hell messes up the SAPR acronym anyway? Damo clears the air on his fumble. CY257 Active Duty E8 and E9 quotas are out. Good luck and well wishes to all. Do you want to become a hitman? Well, that’s as easy as hitting up a website and putting your application in. Just call the prison and ask the Tennessee Air National Guardsman that tried to do it. For this week’s “Do Better” segment, Damon talks about his issues while requesting his upcoming travel event. How does an increase in Family Separation pay sound? The guys talk through the culture of “Spot Checks” and discuss the importance doing it right. Was CPO 365 more effective than Sailor 360? The guys discuss character traits that they have that they know may piss other people off. Should everyone be thanked for their service? The guys discuss what advice they would give a “younger version” of themselves if they were joining the Navy today. What does Damon and Damo consider a “successful” tour? Round 3 of answering questions from listeners. This time it’s about approaching the CPO mess post initiation season. What happened to our “Movie of the Week”? Damon and Damo discuss why they haven’t been reviewing movies/tv shows and discuss plans moving forward. These topics and more are covered in this episode. ”Goatfishing”
02:22:45
This episode starts with Damon getting a much deserved Disciplinary Review Board (DRB). The trio plays a little catch up to see how each other’s weeks were. Damo details the day that he spent with MCPON James Honea. Listen to Damo’s “bacon” story. Are we counting this against him or not? Tisha details her bittersweet Big Bear vacation. The trio discusses what they would do if the weren’t in the Navy. Do Better: Damo defines the term “goatfishing.” Damon explains to all the frugal Divos and Dept Heads, that it is not your money. Nasty Chief’s mugs are discussed again. Do you prefer a clean or dirty cup? Damon and Tisha shares sea stories of mugs being cleaned without express permission from their owners. Tisha talks about a personal issue going on at her command. Damo complains about “Big Navy” requiring essays for every little thing that you want to pursue. Why are CMDCMs so damn wise? The team gives Command Master Chiefs their flowers. With Tisha and Damo both going through major transitions in their careers, Damon asks them what their biggest concerns are. The purpose of having a board for “Sailor of the Year” is dissected. Are qualifications easier to attain when people are needed to stand the respective watches? Damon confesses his guilt regarding qualifying people before they were ready. The crew reflects on some things they regret from their last sea tours. Are too many Sailors being held accountable for things that they were never trained to do? With the recent shooting of Ralph Yarl, by 84-year old Andrew Lester, the team discusses guns, violence, and the state of the country when it comes to these topics. Congrats to Stephen Drum on the release of his book, “Life On The X” in audio format. These topics and more are covered in this episode. [BONUS EPISODE] ”Piggybacking The Piggyback”
01:23:09
*Recorded on April 13th* Damon is back on ships and excited about his new experiences. Damo had a very close call with a bunch of poppy seeds. It could’ve gotten very bad for him. The guys discuss the prospects of TikTok being banned and weigh the pros and cons of the social media platform. Are civilians taking a potential war with China as seriously as they should? Actor Jonathan Majors has recently been in hot water due to an incident of domestic violence. This led to the Army removing a commercial in which he was the star. Nine soldiers were killed in an aerial collision, they guys send condolences to their families and honor them. Damon promised to give a shout out to everyone that let him know they made board. Unfortunately, Damon will not be shouting anyone out this episode. Recently a Fort Sill Commanding General was suspended as a result of violating hunting regulations. Tisha shows up and talks about how her cousin just checked into her command. Should board results be celebrated or is acknowledgment enough? Tisha questions the state of US currency. Damon and Damo are lost on this topic of course. Do Better: Damon address overly entitled Sailors who expect handouts and don’t want to “put the work in.” Damo talks about people who do anything for “clout.” A recent annual report was released covering sexual assault and sexual violence at military academies. The guys discuss. In analyzing the differences between “Battlestations” of the past and what we are doing now, the team discusses their battlestations experiences. These topics and more are covered in this special bonus episode. For PHAs - Press ”2”
02:13:35
Damo opens this episode addressing his recent issues with trying to get his Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) completed. Damon’s #DoBetter shines a light on the lack of the “teamwork” aspect that he’s witnessed during his recent ship visits. The guys discuss the importance of choosing the right mentor as opposed to finding someone that agrees with everything that you say. What are the pros and cons to choosing a mentor that’s in the same division as you? The guys play catch up, discussing Damon’s schedule as an assessor and Damo’s “Retirement Ceremony Uniform Mix Up.” Do you know how many ribbons you should have on your ribbon rack? If so, how do you know? Damo asks Damon a few “Integrity Questions.” Question No. 1: Have you ever ducked out of colors? Question No.2: Do you have any qualifications that you know you didn’t earn? The conversation leads Damo to reflect on the time he earned his Letter of Instruction (LOI). Congratulations to all our Reservist that made Senior Chief and Master Chief! Have you ever heard of a Spiritual/Non-Religious Chaplin? The guys haven’t either; they discuss. A former Navy Officer who was executed for the murder a junior Sailor will have his remains removed from Arlington National Cemetery. Our “Heroes” for this week is a Navy Search and Rescue team who that saved a snowmobiler in Washington. How do you prioritize? Damo discusses his theory about conversations. ”Through The Fire” (Feat. Buddy Shorey)
01:38:24
About This Episode:
Tisha and Damo are joined by Buddy Shorey. Buddy is a military veteran, husband, father, and “dog dad.” Buddy also has an amazing story. He details his personal growth story of overcoming an addiction to prescription pills which ultimately resulted in him being separated from military service — to where he is today. He reflects on past mistakes, near death experiences, and finding the strength to self report. He talks about his best/worst experiences in the Navy, what keeps him grounded, and what he’s “addicted” to today. All of this and so more more a this episode that you do not want to miss. About This Episode:
Damon opens this with a question about if women have to be “perfect” to be able to compete in the work force. Damon shares a sea story about a woman Sailor feeling like her remarks were dismissed by a senior leader as a male who said the same thing had his points considered. This leads to a conversation about communication and how people receive language. Tisha gives her opinion about what she would do if she was in a situation in which she felt like she was being “looked over.” She talks a little more about “muting her feminine” nature.” Is there any value in “face time”? The crew gives their opinions on face time and how to effectively be seen without feeling like you’re kissing ass. Damon and Damo agree that they have to work on their tempers. ”The Hard Way” (Feat. Dean Howell)
02:32:41
Damon and Damo are joined by active-duty Command Master Chief and host of ‘The Rising Son’ podcast, Dean Howell. The guys kick it off with a conversation about Dean’s upbringing. From a Harvard University “recruit” to a Navy Recruiting Office, Damo asks Dean what made him “Choose Navy.” This turned out to be an excellent choice as Dean made Master Chief in 15 years. He also spent the greater part of his military career in Japan, where he met his wife and raised his three daughters. Dean is an advocate for Service members maximizing on their talents while still serving our country. The guys discuss alcoholism in the Navy. With Dean being on the tail end of a “75 Hard” challenge, discipline and challenging yourself to fight temptations is a reoccurring theme. How the hell does someone make Master Chief in 15 Years? What the heck does it mean to be in the “right place at the right time”? Why does Damo hate that expression so much? The guys discuss where the Command Master Chief falls in the command’s organization structure. You may be surprised by this. Is the Senior Enlisted Advisor community a separate entity than the CPO Mess? How’s the state of the CPO Mess right now? What can we do to fix some of the negative thoughts about the CPO Mess? Damon wants to know how Dean approaches his Chief’s Mess on Day 1. Dean discusses one of the craziest things that he’s seen as a Command Master Chief. The life of a podcaster is explored. The guys talk the power of “thinking big” and taking risks. Dean dishes some detail on the book that he’s currently working on, ‘H.O.L.D. F.A.S.T.’ which he intends to release later this year. Is the Navy pay system “all jacked up”? How does a CMDCM feel about “CMDCM pay”? Do Command Master Chiefs make enough money? There is so much more in this episode. Make sure you listen until the very end! Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on TikTok, Facebook, Discord, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

Damo is on a pescatarian diet so he’s gonna need some motivation from all of us because he’s struggling already. Tisha had some things to take care of, but the guys have a special announcement to make. Was Damon really almost abducted in Fort Lauderdale, or was it some kind of “ride share” hustle going on? What’s going on in FL? Damon shares his vacation experience. The guys discuss “post leave energy.” What kind of “leave person” are you? Do you need time to adjust or are you giving it 100% on the day you return from an extended leave period. How do you accept criticism? Does the messenger matter sometimes? [BONUS EPISODE] ”There’s Always A Backstory”
47:33
Damon is on vacation so Tisha and Damo are holding it down in this bonus episode of "Permission To Speak Freely." Recently a screenshot of a conversation between a GM1 who appears to be his LCPO surfaced on the internet. GM1 is asking for a "sick day" because he didn't get any sleep due to having to take care of his sick daughter while his wife was taking care of the newborn. Chief wasn't having any of it and told GM1 that he needs to be at work tomorrow. Tisha and Damo read through the text thread and have a "deep dive" conversation about the whole scenario. Stay tuned until the end, there may or may not be an appearance from a very special guest! Stay tuned until the end, there may or may not be an appearance from a very special guest! ”The Harder You Fall”
02:36:40
The gang kicks off this episode with a quick “Wellness Check.” It’s been a while since the team connected so Damon, Damo, and Tisha all get caught up on each other’s Valentine’s Days. The NAVADMINs for CMDCM and CMDCS and CWO/LDO were released. Congrats to everyone that was selected. The Army’s “first full time rap artists just started basic training” but what do we think about it? Can you be a stripper and/or have an OnlyFans account if you’re in the Military? This leads to a story about a Command Master Chief that stepped down from his role after receiving some backlash for trying to be just a little too cool. More objects have been seen in the sky. Are we taking these reports seriously? The DoD released a warning against poppy seed intake due to traces of codeine in multiple servicemember’s urinalysis results. Is “physical fitness” in the Navy becoming less of a priority than ever before? NAVADMIN 042/23 is discussed. A larger conversation about leadership responsibility, personal responsibility, and overall health gets a deep dive. Another discuss about “EPs,” Damo plays “Devil’s Advocate” on a few takes. How far away are we from an African American and/or woman Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. The crew discusses maintaining personal relationships with your family while being in the Military. These topics and more are covered in this episode. Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

Some topics covered in this episode: - CMSAF Joanne S. Bass. - Shooting on Post at intruders. - Social Media Trolls. - The President picking his nose in a car is used as an analogy for some strange reason. - ...Leadership. ”Flowers” (Feat. Alana M. Abernethy)
01:34:45
Entrepreneur/Author/Writer Alana M. Abernethy joins the show again. This makes her our first official “Repeat Guest,” which is another first for Alana! She discusses her life now from where she was the last time we spoke. She talks about her reason for traveling and the joy of being able to travel with zero restrictions. She reflects on an incident with negative criticism due to the title of her recently release book, “Black Veteran Entrepreneur,” in which she co-wrote with Mike Steadman. She also talks about the “most important” message that she believes this book conveys. “Muting your femininity” gets a deep dive from Tisha and Alana. Alana reflects on being falsely accused of having a sexual relationship with a junior Enlisted Sailor (by that Sailor). Alana breaks down her Valentine’s Day plans for this year. What is Imposter Syndrome? How’s life with two mother figures? What does treating women unfairly look like? Damo asks Alana about a particular time in which she was accused of giving an African American women a position in her department “just because she was a black woman.” How should Tish have taken that “The People’s Champ” comment? She’s on her own with the “Mafia” talk, huh? A discussion on culture and the importance of establishing connections with people whom you might not naturally gravitate towards. How does it feel to be asked to be the spokesperson for all African Americans? These topics and more are covered in this episode. ”Intrepidity”
01:30:18
It’s time for us to ban together and take a stand! Are you with us? Well come on, we’re going to the highest levels of government to make the “day after the Super Bowl” an official “Day Off.” Damo reflects on his time as “acting” Command Master Chief as the his new CMDCM has officially checked into the command. An interaction with a Civilian Supervisor leads Damo to ask what everyone’s thoughts are on Senior Leadership receiving recognition and awards. Tisha experienced the “AirBNB guest from hell.” Kids can say some hurtful things at times. Damon and Tisha share their experiences. Things somehow get really gross for no reason. Let’s switch it up and talk about Valentine’s Day plans. Tisha provides clear guidance on how to know if you are a “Boat Boo.” Listen up. What was the whole deal with that Chinese spy balloon anyway? The trio discusses what they believe people tend to get wrong about each of them. Damo takes a deeper dive into the Hero of the Week, Sergeant Dwight H. Johnson who suffered from post traumatic stress after engaging in courageous acts in Vietnam. Damon highlights an unsung hero from the Civil Rights Movement. ”Information Overload”
01:48:05
Have you ever been in the head on the toilet - never mind, let’s not even get into that one. It’s only right to start this episode with a #DoBetter. Damo has smoke for Amazon giving away janky products. Damon want’s electric vehicles to be available for purchase. Medical is going for the “Do Better Record,” causing Tisha all kinds of problems while dealing with one of her children’s medical issue. The three discussed Air Force General Mike Minihan’s statements about potential war with China that went viral and made the Shade Room. A marine in Japan who refused the COVID-19 vaccine is in the brig facing new allegation. Did she do anything wrong? Is whatever she did considered “Brig-worthy”? Why are we so behind on technology? Is there a such thing as too much information? Don’t you hate when you “ask the Chief” and the Chief tells you to “Go figure it out.” The PTSF Crew gives their versions of “advice” to young Sailors. Damo introduces a game called “Pick One” These topics and more are covered in this episode. ”U Gotta Stand On That”
02:22:09
Damon, Damo, and Tisha are back with more shenanigans, top stories, and most importantly; ownership. The fellas reflect on why they chose not to release a recent interview with a guest. Damon’s issue with the price of eggs leads Tisha to ask who would stay in the military if they won the Mega Millions. MCPON Honea hosted an AMA on Reddit last week. Super cool idea, but how did it go? Damo asks Damon to take accountability for something he said in last week’s episode, Damo apologizes for something he said a few episodes ago that he learned was insensitive to women; Tisha gives her feedback. Navy Seal Lieutenant Michael E. Thornton is highlighted as the ‘Hero of the Week.’ Do Better: eNAVFIT and NMCI. What would you do if you were the only person a Sailor trusts? Damon has a resolution for all smokers and dippers. You have to hear this! How far will you go to honor your deceased spouse? Three active duty Marines are charged in January 6 riots. 12 weeks of leave across the board as NAVADMIN 008/23 announced the expansion of the military parental leave policy. Army Officer Caron Nazario gets less than $4k in a million dollar lawsuit against the police wrongly assaulted him. The trio discusses brutality, race, police, and the murder of Tyre Nichols. 27-Year Navy SEAL Master Chief (SOCM) Stephen Drum (retired) joins this episode and speaks with the guys about the difference between the “best” and the “greatest.” He reflects on his upbringing in the special warfare community from young Sailor, to a leader in his community. He breaks down the training process for Navy Seal candidates. Damo asks Stephen what he would do in a “Liam Neeson Movie” style scenario. If you’re in the Navy, we are sure that you heard of the “Warrior Toughness” program. This program was aimed to help Sailors with the ability to persevere and perform under danger and high stress scenarios. You’ve probably heard that this program was developed by a chaplain, psychologist, and a SEAL. Well Stephen is the SEAL that was a part of that Warrior Toughness development group. The trio discusses the importance of family and shows some love to military spouses. ”Cream of the Crop” (Feat. LNC Artisha Bing)
02:22:23
To connect with LNC Artisha Bing, please email her at:
Damon and Damo are joined by LNC Artisha Bing. Damo starts off with a question; can you run a successful command without sacrificing sleep, work, fitness, or family? The discuss the hazards in trying to “load” more work onto someone whose specific job isn’t the most burdensome. Question of the day: is this “cutting?” Can you affectively change an organization’s culture without cutting back on remote work? Damon discusses his upcoming big NFL game and lays out his preparation process. The trio takes a moment to highlight the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Artisha explains what she does in the Navy as a Legalman (LN). Does she pay more attention to celebrity trials as they play out in the media? She reflects on the craziest case that she can remember. What are some of the benefits of being a Legalman? How does someone become a LN? Artisha is a true boss, with multiple Turo vehicles and Airbnb properties. The guys ask her how she’s able to hold all of this down while operating as an active duty Sailor on her day-to-day. How did she get her start? Did we break the seal on relationship talk on the first episode of the year? For sure. Artisha talks about how much harder it is to date as someone who could be the potential “breadwinner” in her relationship. Netflix recently released #IAmVanessaGuillen; a documentary the covers the fight of the Guillen family getting a groundbreaking law passed. ”What Year Are We In?”
01:50:57
Did you miss episode notes? Well, here you go. Hope this satisfies you. Why are we still talking about masks going into 2023? Damon expresses his concerns about a new mask mandate in San Diego county. He reflects on his recent back surgery. Why does it feel like you have to go through a gauntlet to get an MRI in the Navy? If you want to know the reason that we didn’t have a video for our last episode, look no further, we address our lack of visuals right now. Damo discusses his first week acting as the Command Master Chief. Wait until you hear what he did on his first day in “the seat”! Is the Navy “proactive” or “reactive,” when it comes to security measures and practices? We don’t want to see any one lines on that New Year mid-entry so don’t mess that up! What’s the best duty section in the Navy? A Chick-Fil-A owner is in hot water for paying his employees in food. A Sailor was arrested for voyeurism at Home Depot. Another SEAL team commander has recently passed away. The guys run through a few of the recently released NAVADMINs: Senior Enlisted Advanced to Position, Uniform Regulations (Diamond Earrings), High Year Tenure, and Everyone is a Recruiter. Damo reads an email from a listener about boot camp showers. The guys have a small therapy session followed by a brief reflection of the Civil Rights movement. “Best of the Year” in movies, tv, and books are discussed. ”Everybody Can’t Go”
02:16:39
Damon and Damo both enjoyed their Thanksgiving weeks in two completely different ways. Damon had an intimate meal with his family, even though his son Mark is missing due to mission requirements. Damo had a chance to visit his Grandfather in Florida and interview him about his life. Good luck to all E6’s getting ready for the E7 exam. But damn, why is the test right after the holiday break? We can never appreciate our audience enough. Thank you all so much for the love and appreciation. The holiday season can be a rough time for service members and their families. The guys take a moment to acknowledge that and provide a few resources for anyone in need. NAVADMIN 261/22 was just released and it’s a game changer for senior enlisted Sailors hoping to make Master Chief. The guys take a deep dive on the instruction, discussing how the feel about it, amongst other things. In a very personal conversation Damo challenges himself to a weight loss journey and asks for your help. Damon expresses how he feels about potentially retiring without making Master Chief. ”A Whole Nother Rabbit Hole” (Feat. DGUTS)
03:55:14
Damon and Damo are joined by “DGUTS,” the host of popular military podcast, “Don’t Give Up The Ship.” They begin the episode discussing the “potluck etiquette.” Happy birthday Damon! Don’t forget to show him some love. Damo recalls his experience serving as a courtesy CACO for a Planeside Honors ceremony. The guys discuss a story about a Sailor who made Chief but rejected the anchors and decided to remain a First Class Petty Officer. A question from a listener regarding the Sailor of the Year program and meritorious advancement for Sailors of the Year. This brings up a slew of thoughts about boardsmanship, package writing, and program elements they believe can be improved. DGUTS shares his experience of when he attended a Chief advancement board. Should the ‘Sailor of the Year’ always be the No.1 EP. Speaking of “EPs,” the guys go in on the eval system (just a little). How much does the person “representing” you mean at a ranking board? Should that matter? Do Better: Gym Cleanliness (Damo), Piggybacking Gifts (Damon), Chief’s Mess that are still trying not to accept new Chiefs (DGUTS). How much does the Chief Initiation vary command to command? An army wife used a tracking device to catch a moving truck driver in a lie. Is she right or wrong? DGUTS discussed converting to visual platforms and his reasoning for not showing his face or using his name. The guys “nerd out” a little about content creation and social media. DGUTS discusses his experiences dealing with bad leadership. He also discusses negative stereotypes about cooks in the Navy, through the lens of his experiences on submarines. DGUTS recalls his experience with cancer, from being diagnosed, to treatment, to recovery, to his emotional reaction to dealing with all of this. He also talks about depression and suicidal thoughts. These and more topics are covered in this episode. Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

They quickly get into to all the woes of these “so-called” discounts. They highlight a few offers and critique them. What are “23 Things Veterans may carry for life:? The guys discuss. They also toe the line of being cancelled with their “coffee mug” opinions. “Everyday Heroes” are highlighted. A Marine Corps Drill Instructor may be charged in the death of a recruit. ”The Most Disrespected Rate in the Navy”
02:27:11
The shocking news that started the week was the story of the untimely death of Takeoff, who made up one third of the iconic rap group; Migos. Damo recounts his affinity for the Migos and how he came to become of fan of the trio. The guys discuss violence in the hip hop community and the necessity to protect yourself. They also discuss the recent spike in what seems to be a glorification of violence. Would you join the military at 42 years old? Would you join the military today if you weren’t a service member already. Do Better: Damo debates if Damon is being a little too hard of medical service providers. What’s the “most disrespected rate in the Navy?” Of course, Damo says it’s electricians. Our first “Do Better” update, what happened? How do you handle a Sailor whose biggest issue is that they don’t want to go out to sea? Ever been OC spayed? Imagine being trained on how to survive a “Molotov cocktail” attack. Damon breaks down the Navy’s latest NAVADMIN regarding the physical readiness program. Whew. The guys are finally finished with the Terminal List. Hear what they thought about the show and the last episode. Did Damo know the “big reveal” all along? These and more topics are covered in this episode. ”Bucket List Bonanza”
02:43:39
Damon and Damo open this episode with a discussion about Tom Brady’s recent comments regarding how the military compares to being in the NFL. Damo takes a moment to introduce the podcast to unfamiliar listeners and followers. Damon give his medical update. The role of the Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) is discussed, along with if there are some collateral duties that we should try our best to not “volunteer” people without their buy-in. Who is Mike Itkis and what the hell did he do? Just listen. It’s priceless. More talk about maurijuana. NASA confirms DART mission redirected an asteroid in orbit. Would the military ensure that all active service members are on the ark to depart Earth during an extinction level event? What is the expectation of someone who’s retirement has been denied? Do Better: Damon’s mad at the pharmacy again and Damo’s mad at himself. There are also those people that sign up to do things that they know they aren’t available for. Listeners, we may have to look out for Damon after this episode. SECDEF Austin announced that the Pentagon will pay for abortion travel expenses. Military sexual assault victims could be eligible for back benefits. Damon takes a phone call from a family member at a recruiting station. Shout out to Petty Officer Second Class Hernandez for letting the guys keep the audio! What does is mean to be “woke”? Seriously, we want to know. What’s Damon upset about now? Does anyone ever reach out to the people on the bottom of the NAVADMINs? That 2023 Cyberawareness Challenge is a little harder than you might expect. Be prepared. The One About Seasonal Leadership
01:37:53
Damon and Damo open this special 50th episode with a conversation about their “9/11 Stories.” The guys take a moment to celebrate their 50th Episode! Congrats on the milestone, fellas. The NFL has returned, and Damon is ecstatic about it. (Note: This episode was recorded before his team - the 49ers - lost to the Chicago Bears in game one of the season. Damo asks Damon about how he would handle a few important scenarios if they were to take place the same time as a football game. Congrats to all who heard their named called as the enter the six-week CPO Initiation period! The goats share some advice to the CPO Selectees. One of our heroes of the week, Petty Officer Charles Jackson French was just posthumously rewarded a Navy Achievement Medal this year. Does he deserve a “higher” achievement? Have the guys ever felt like they had to filter their words? What does it mean for someone to be selected but not interested in participating in the CPO Initiation? Damo recaps a Reddit thread about this topic. Do Better: “Seasonal Leadership.” These and more topics are discussed on this episode. 02:30:05
Damon and Damo are joined by CMDCS Aaron Paul. They off talking about the upcoming season (of course). Not just the football season, it’s about to be some new Chiefs in the mess! Congratulations to the FY-23 Selectees! They chop it up with Aaron about his entry into the Navy and the two times that he considered separating. Another installment of the “Do Better” segment about waivers, doing “too much” to go viral, and communication. Damo asks Aaron for a non-incriminating regret of his. This leads to a conversation about CFLs and the responsibility of owning your role. DRB is discussed and the guys give their opinions on their different approaches to the process. Damo briefly discusses Navy Seal recruit, Kyle Mullen who recently passed away following “Hell Week.” You know we had to discuss Serena Williams. Congratulations on a great career. The One About Throwing Hands At Waffle House
02:50:07
In this jam-packed episode, Damon and Damo recap their weeks and Damo owes a few people some apologies. A question from a listener leads to a very inspired conversation about being competitive within your rank (peer) group. Salute to Captain Kimberly Johnson Jones, the first African-American woman to assume the duties as Reactor Officer of a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. The brother of a marine killed during the evacuation of Afghanistan committed suicide at annual memorial of the passing of his brother. What’s one change that the Navy has made that you wish they didn’t? Damo has an interesting “Do Better” segment. Y’all already know we had to talk about this $115k giveaway. Let’s take a deeper dive into A2P. This leads to a conversation about college tuition assistance which leads to a conversation about De’reek Banks (a modern day “Robin Hood”?) The Marine Corps is doing away with “tape” for calculating BCA and modernizing the process using advanced technology. Damon and Damo discuss hospitality and greeting strangers. Damo brings up a thought about the criteria to be an Officer in the Navy and contemplates the value of a degree when it comes to ability to lead. These and more topics are discussed on this episode. The One About Sailors with No ******* Money (Feat. PSC Soledad Arcefuentes)
02:54:06
Damon and Damo are joined on this episode by PSC Soledad “Sol” Arcefuentes. Sol and Damo met at the Senior Enlisted Academy, and she came to kick it with the fellas and talk some Navy stuff. Damon opens the episode with a personal story about his son, who is now out of boot camp and stationed at his first command. Damon talks about assisting him during his travel as he is in a school for his rating. Damo recognizes his first ship, USS Vella Gulf (CG-72), as she was decommissioned on 4 August 2022. What is monkeypox? We don’t have the answers, but we have a whole lot of questions. Is it too early to be concerned about this? How would you want to go out, zombie apocalypse or Robot takeover? The word “soft” gets thrown around a lot in today’s time. The trio discuss the word. Should a Warrant Officer sit in on a CPO ranking board? The commissary is testing out a doorstep deliver service. Sounds cool. Condolences to the family of Seaman David L. Spearman who died at sea this earlier this month. Since Sol is a PSC, Damo felt it was only right to bring up pay issues. How is it that a service member can go four months without pay? Damon talks Senior Enlisted Advance To Position and the Senior Enlisted Optimization Plan. This turns into a conversation about impact statements. A Navy Lieutenant is serving 3 years in a Japanese prison due to a traffic accident that left two dead. He was diagnosed to have passed out due to a medical condition. Should he be serving time? The topic of ownership comes up. These and more topics are discussed on this episode. The One About Getting Orders to Norfolk
02:10:24
So what is this episode really about? Who knows? Damon is working on Evals. Damo is ranting about what he would rant about if he could go about ranting without Damon which causes Damon to rant about being an SEL and not knowing that a member of his command had a baby. Where them deployment pics at? We wanna see those. Just leave the body shot videos in your hidden folder. Damo compared DJ Khaled to the Marvel Universe. “Text Etiquette” makes a triumphant return to the pod. Another “Do Better” segment. This one featuring a retired Navy Chief who took advantage of a trusting Facebook group. How does a fighter jet fall off a ship due to unexpected heavy weather? But don’t worry we are still mission capable. Really, what is this episode about? There is so much more but we’ll let you digest it all for yourself on this episode of ‘PTSF.’ Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

The One About 12 October 2000 (Feat. ITCM Amaury Ponciano)
02:28:40
If you’re a veteran and are experiencing post traumatic stress disorder, please visit:
If you are having suicidal ideation and require immediate support please call: 1-800-273-8255
**Trigger Warning** This episode includes very specific detailed commentary about death, PTSD, and acts of terror onboard a US Naval vessel. This episode is the direct account from a Sailor who was stationed onboard the USS Cole during the terrorist attack in 2000. As vital as this history is for today, please be advised that some of this may be hard to listen to and digest.
On this episode, Damon and Damo are joined by ITCM Amaury Ponciano who was an E1 stationed on the USS Cole (DDG-67) on October 12, 2000. This was the day that the ship was attacked by terrorist suicide bombers, leaving 17 Sailors deceased, another 37 wounded, and tore a forty by sixty foot hole in the ship’s hull. ITCM reflects on his early days in America, the Navy, and on the ship before that fateful day. Masterchief gives a real time account of his experience on the day of the attack and how he initially responded. There is some discussion about divine intervention and purpose. The fellas discuss the power of understanding your purpose in the moment. Damon highlights the importance of damage control and engineering casualty control. ITCM discusses life after the USS Cole, adjusting to a new normal and living with PTSD. The trio chop it up about the CPO Season, mentors, boat boos, and not taking history for granted. These and more topics are discussed on this episode of ‘PTSF.’ Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

Oh, By The Way Ep. 8 - Are You A Baby Boomer? (Feat. EN1 Chad Underwood)
01:40:43
Damon and Damo are joined by former shipmate EN1 Chad Underwood. The trio opens the episode with a response to an email from a listener. They shift into a conversation about detailers and EN1's experience trying to "crossdeck" with another Sailor. EN1 provides his perceptions of what a good first class is and discusses a good relationship between LPO and LCPO. Do you have to "like" someone to be able to work with them? Damon reminisces on the time that an inspector physically threatened to fight a Sailor. Damon and EN1 bonded over 483 PMS alerts. The guys discuss good watch team relationships. EN1 Underwood discusses three areas in which he believes that the Navy can improve in. The One About ”One-Way Conversations”
02:26:00
Are we back? Maybe. We’ll see, we guess. Damo opens this episode with a recap of his experience at the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island. The guys catch up on their weeks, which include car accidents, bad AC, and women that exaggerate (because they do sometimes, lol). Damo asked Damon how he feels about the phrase, “This is going to be a one-way conversation.” A discussion on hardest decision made as a leader strangely transitions into a reflection on berthing wars. Do Command Master Chief’s get paid enough money? Should “high-year tenure” be a thing? In this week’s “Do Better” segment, Damo talks about gyms on military bases that close too early. Damon shares his thoughts on DEOCS surveys and the importance of taking them. The army just announced they will start accepting recruits without high school diplomas or GEDs. Wait, they already took that back. What is NAVADMIN 142/22 and what is it telling us about the state of our recruiting and manning. How’s eNAVFIT working for you? The One About The Audiograms
02:38:13
PLEASE BE ADVISED: This episode starts with a discussion of very sensitive topics that can be traumatic to your listening experience. Please fast forward as you see fit. Damon and Damo return from a three week hiatus and immediately start with a conversation about the massacre in Uvalde, Texas at Robb Elementary School which resulted in the loss of life for 19 children and two adults. They discuss mental health, bullying, and their opinions on gun laws in the United States. They reflect on the targeted killing of African Americans in Buffalo, New York. Rest In Peace to actor, Ray Liotta, who passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2022. What is going on in Fort Hood? The guys discuss Sgt. Jewel Scott’s accusations against her leadership and Fort Hood’s current reputation. The CNO recently made changes to his suggested reading lists, resulting in the removal of the “woke” books that were previously listed. What is “woke” anyway and why does it feel like a “dirty” word now? After all this talking, the guys finally catch up on what’s been going on in their personal lives. Damon’s son, Mark made a surprise visit to the family (that wasn’t much of a surprise), Damon reacts. The Navy’s number of deserters is currently higher than every other branch of the military and higher than it’s been in four years. This conversation develops into a debate about contractual obligations. Damo recaps the weight of an audiogram for an aging engineer in the fleet. Congratulations to all of the newly appointed SCPOs and MCPOs. Top Gun 2 is finally here! Damo takes a deep dive into the world of Tom Cruise and how he believes this new film will impact Hollywood and the Navy. Would you let your team fail to prove how important your role is? Damon speaks about the absence of senior leadership in the positions that matter. These and more topics are discussed on this episode of ‘PTSF.’ Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

The One About Joe Navy
01:48:03
Damon is back and in full effect! He didn’t actually go anywhere, however, he explains why he hasn’t been very “long in the tooth.” Damo adds another installation to his epic saga about human feces. We apologize in advance for the content and we are working as hard as we can to ensure this never happens again. A huge shoutout to Quizlet for helping service members worldwide with “studying” and achieving success in respective areas. There are so many things going on the month and the guys highlight a few of them. Coming off another inspiration “Hero of the Week,” the guys dissect the notion of making peace with death. Habitability has been a major ‘eyesore’ for the military in 2022; is this a new issue or are we finally speaking about it? Damo goes on his routine passionate rant about “caring.” Are you brave enough to be the outcast? Since it is Mental Health Awareness Month, the fellow take the time out to do a “Sanity Check’ on one another. Are we trading “Sailor Proof” for “DIY?” HARP, OHARP, and SEMINAR are outlined. Damon and Damo open this conversation reflecting on lessons learned from the MCPON’s visit to the USS George Washington. Congrats to all of the SELRES newly selected Master Chiefs and Senior Chiefs. Damo talks about his awkward week of mistakes and embarrassing moments. It’s never fun when you have to correct someone for calling you the wrong rate. Damon and Damo discuss experiences. Damo just discovered #militarytikok and fell in love at first sight! He compares it to “Military Facebook” with Damon. Is the Navy experiencing a “generational gap” that is more noteworthy than some of the gaps in the past. The guys discuss beards on shore duty and they feel like people should be able to have them. The One About Segue Fails (Feat. GSE1 McPherson)
02:35:07
Former shipmate of both Damon and Damo, GSE1 Kenton McPherson joins the show as a “guest host” and the guys couldn’t be more excited! The episode opens with a little bit of myth busting with regard to unwritten rules by different rates in the Navy. The trio goes on to discuss recent reports about the Navy offering at least 25,000 dollars to anyone willing to join as long as they will ship out to basic training by June. As most conversations go on ‘PTSF,’ the conversation transition to a discussion about the need to improve training around the fleet. In a moment of improvisation, Damo and GSE1 discusses a bit of his story from declining to take the CPO exam to a bad evaluation experience. They discuss a recently publicized story about a wife made a Facebook post about her husband dealing with reprisal for having mental health issues. Does one bad apple really spoil the whole bunch? The guys discuss. GSE1 talks about what would’ve helped him to open up to his leadership when he was a junior Sailor. Scammers get a little more shine and if Damo’s around, their is going to be a debate about Will Smith’s choice of movies. The One About The Scammers
02:03:08
As we continue our celebration of Women’s History Month, the guys honor Army Sergeant Monica Lin Brown for her efforts during the War in Afghanistan which resulted in her receiving a Silver Star. Not much is left untouched in this episode full of shenanigans and jokes. Damon and Damo discuss Tyler Jenkins and the very familiar scenario that is infidelity that plagues a lot of Sailor’s lives. Not to be unbeaten by Netflix and Hulu, the military has a few scammer stories of our own. The Navy has resurrected its bachelor degree program to help recruit a more diverse Officer community. We would love for someone to come and tell us a little more about the program. Does the slow runner during the PFA actually want your help? What would you do if you walked into the house and heard “cheeks clapping.” These and more topics discussed on this episode of ‘PTSF.’ Remember to follow the ‘Permission to Speak Freely’ podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and subscribe on YouTube.

He talks about it all from what made him join the Navy and how he was able to retire in only 13 years to his inspiration behind the Pizza Restaurant in which he founded and owns; Plank Owner Pizza Bar. The two served at three commands together so they quickly breeze through shipboard shenanigans, wax poetic about getting fired from K-Mart, and how hard it was to go to high school when Bow Wow was running the game. There is so much more in this episode, but of course, they talk pizza! If you enjoyed this episode, please remember to review, like, subscribe, and comment, and share.

The One About Two Strikes (Feat. YN1 Ann Geiman)
02:24:22
Happy Woman’s History Month. We proudly honor all of our sisters-in-arms and our queens on the home-front always leading with flawless execution.
After a very short emergency vacation, the fellas are back! This time they are joined by YN1 Ann Geiman. Back in 2012, as an E3, YN1 created the Gay, Lesbian and Supportive Sailors association (GLASS). This year marks the association’s 10-Year Anniversary. Her acknowledgment of the need for this association took her from being a frustrated A-School student to the White House in less than two years. She gives Damon and Damo the details on the formation of GLASS and how to start a chapter of glass at your respective command. She also talks about some of her struggles being a gay woman trying to make a name for herself in a male dominated division. Damo gets a lesson on pronouns and YN1 talks about where GLASS is now and shares a few sea stories. Oh, By The Way Ep. 5 - Reddit, MCPON, and That Other Goat
01:35:39
On this episode Damon and Damo discuss the value of Reddit and how it's been helping Sailors get messages out in a less traditional way. They cover a few breaking news stories, to include the recent reports about the MCPON having some sort of investigate, but maybe not, or maybe it's open, but it could be closed, we don't know. All we know is that whatever happened, it wasn't as bad as "the other guy." All of this information coming out of a report in Navy Times. Should we practice any form a restraint when covering major topics with little to no information? The guys discuss. They also talk about a breaking story regarding living conditions on a major military installation. Damo has a question for anyone that can help. The second half of this episode is all about sports. You know Damon loved this. The duo discusses everything from Damo's issues with sports fans (please don't kill him for this), to Brian Flores, to the retirement of the other one that we call the GOAT; Tom Brady. These topics and more are covered on this episode.

We just want you to go into it blind and enjoy the episode (for the most part at least). Of course, we highlight the life and works of Secretary / General / Legend Colin L. Powell. After that it's a tour de force in journalism ranging from dog humping and pooping before the PRT to Damo celebrating his retirement eating edibles with Damon (this is wishful thinking, of course). Ok. That is it. That is all. Please listen to the episode and enjoy! Remember to drop a review. Also, if you take the time out and read these; you're in luck.
