Description

Creator of The Simplified Planner® and mama of three Emily Ley shares stories and tips that’ll empower you to simplify your home, work, and everything in between so you can make space for what matters, get rid of what doesn't, and build a life you love.

Episode Date
65: You’re Doing Great, Mama (a May Pep Talk with Sally Clarkson)
34:32
May is the Christmas of spring: it’s a beautiful time of year, filled with flowers and fun and new life, but if you’re a parent, you also know May is . . . *a lot.* All the recitals. All the field days. All the ball games and practices, all the projects before  school’s out. And while you try to navigate all the end-of-school-year fun/chaos, let Emily and her guest, author and podcaster Sally Clarkson, remind you: You’re doing great, Mama—you really are. Sally is someone Emily turns to time and again for parenting advice, as Sally’s raised four exceptional young humans. And today, Sally shares stories from her own days in the May trenches, and gives us a gentle pep rally to remind us that great mamas aren’t the ones who have the perfect snack bags for field day, or have the summer schedule already filled to the brim with edutainment. Great mamas are the ones who not only provide for their kids, but also remember that in order to care for someone else well, we have to care for *ourselves* well, too.

64: Getting Real About My Wellness Journey
23:08
A lot of things go into caring for yourself well: the mental, the emotional, the spiritual. And so much of our health stems from how we’re caring for our bodies. What are we using to fuel our energy? How much are we moving? It’s something Emily’s been thinking about a lot over the past few months. Emily shares the catalyst that caused her to dive deep into her health and wellness (spoiler alert: it’s definitely not something you’d expect) to see if she could tackle why she was losing hair, experiencing allergic and autoimmune reactions, and feeling the effects of inflammation all over her body. After working with her doctor and a health coach, she’s sharing four doable changes she’s made this year that’ve had a huge impact on her strength and energy levels, and helped her get back to feeling like her best self.

A couple PS’s on this episode:

[1] Let’s be real: none of us at Team Simplified are doctors. We’re sharing this info friend to friend, so you can decide if adjusting the dials on your wellness routine is something you’d like to try.

[2] Don’t forget: your body is unique. What works for someone else may work differently for you, and vice versa. And that’s okay!

63: Our Journeys Through Infertility (with Kristin Winchester)
40:47
Infertility is something so many families struggle with. It’s a journey filled with physical and emotional exertion on a daily basis, of doctors and medications and countless whispered prayers and tears. Some journeys end the way you wished for. Many of them don’t. No two journeys are the same, and that holds true for Emily and her BFF Kristin Winchester. Emily and Kristin share the long, winding road through infertility they each experienced, how it impacted their partners, and the complicated feelings they had throughout their journeys. They share how they navigated tough moments, like when their friends found out they were pregnant, and how they cared for themselves throughout that season.

If you’re traveling this road today, we want you to know a few things: if this episode—or any situation this season—feels too much for you, then you don’t have to partake in it. You are not traveling this road alone. There are so many ways to mother someone, whether you met in the delivery room or somewhere else along the way. And you are so very, very loved.

62: Gardening Hacks Anyone Can Use (with Team Simplified’s Whit)
46:01
Spring has officially sprung!  It’s hard not to throw yourself into your local plant nursery and empty your wallet to create the garden of your Instagram dreams. But how do you get the best bang for your gardening buck? And what are the easiest plants to care for without, you know, sending them to the compost pile? Lucky for us, Simplified’s creative director Whitney Hawkins happens to create beautiful things not only with her computer, but also with her gorgeous garden! Whit and Emily talk about the easiest plants and flowers to care for inside and outside your home, Whit’s go-to tools for any gardening projects, why she built a Free Flower Stand in front of her house, and why gardening has sprouted new relationships in her neighborhood and a new sense of confidence, wonder, and awe in herself.

61: Navigating Difficult Conversations with Your Partner
17:05
We love our people, but here’s the thing: conflict is inevitable. That’s because people see and experience the world differently. And that’s okay! In fact, it’s normal! But have you ever noticed the hard conversations you have with your partner can go from 0 to 60 on the emotional rollercoaster, more than any other relationship can? Why is that? And how can we navigate those conversations while respecting our partner’s feelings—and our own? Emily breaks down how to spot when you’re about to spiral into a heated moment, different patterns of conflict you may use to fight, and how to know when it’s time to agree to disagree, or even take a few minutes to cool off from a hot topic. It’s thorny, it’s hard, but finding your way through a hard conversation happens through a bit of love, respect, humility—and a whole lot of listening.

60: Embracing New Tools for a New Season (with Shauna Niequist)
38:07
What do you do when the story you’re living suddenly doesn’t fit anymore? What happens when your story gets rewritten in real time—and you have no backspace button you can push? We’ve all been there in one way or another. So has author Shauna Niequist. Like many of us, Shauna has been in a season of unraveling and reweaving. A few years ago she, her husband Aaron, and their two boys left their hometown of Chicago and moved into an 800-square-foot apartment in Manhattan, where they knew exactly eight (!) people. Shauna and Emily talk about how to embrace the changes you asked for and the ones you didn’t, why we’ll never stop learning things (and why that’s a great thing!). Above all, Shauna reminds us that life as we know it is going to change. It’s not easy. It’s definitely messy. But sometimes, those changes can be beautiful too.

59: Revolutionize Your Schedule with Time Blocking
16:50
Do you start your day with a plan, or just kind of wing it? If you’re looking to give your schedule a tactical makeover, may we introduce . . . time blocking! This week, Emily’s telling you all about this productivity secret weapon and how it can give a little structure to even the craziest days. Sometimes getting more done (and a little peace of mind along the way!) is as simple as looking at your To-Do list and figuring out when you can make it happen—and if you can’t, maybe it’s time to give yourself a bit of grace and a little bit of margin. And don’t forget: the measure of success isn’t what you do. It’s being the kind and courageous friend, partner, sister, daughter, and teammate you already are.

58: Peace Is a Practice (with Morgan Harper Nichols)
40:01
With everything going on in our homes and our world, peace can seem out of grasp even on the best days. But as artist and poet Morgan Harper Nichols says, “You don’t have to arrive at your picture-perfect life before you can know peace.” Whenever Morgan speaks, we listen—you can see why, right? This week, Emily and Morgan talk about how to quiet your heart and find contentment, no matter where you are (even if it’s somewhere you don’t want to be). Morgan shares how receiving an autism diagnosis at 31 years old helped her understand and engage with the world—and herself!—in a deeper way. Above all, Morgan reminds us that peace isn’t the absence of discomfort; it doesn’t happen passively or something you get perfectly right. Peace is something you do, a practice you come back to over and over again.

57: Putting Boundaries in Place (with Nedra Tawwab)
38:15
Is it mean to live with boundaries? Do they keep you walled off from other people? Nope! Our guest today Nedra Tawwab says, “Boundaries are expectations and needs that help you feel safe and comfortable in your relationships.” Sounds like they’re pretty essential, huh? Nedra’s a therapist who shares (with her 1.4 million Instagram followers @nedratawwab) how to clearly communicate your needs and expectations so you can create healthy, loving relationships. Today Nedra and Emily talk about ways to communicate your needs more clearly to your partner, how to raise kids with healthy boundaries, and how to honor yourself through it all.

56: When You Mess Up, Show Yourself Compassion
16:22
Sometimes the person who’s hardest to treat with compassion is . . . you. When you’ve done something you wish you could take back, or didn’t intervene when you should’ve, carrying guilt can feel like a punishment you’re supposed to shoulder. But Emily reminds us if we want to show compassion to others, we *have* to show it to ourselves first. This week, Emily’s sharing a few ways you can start to be more gentle and kind with yourself. Because kindness isn’t weakness—it one of the strongest things we can do.

55: Live Your New Story with the Enneagram (with Ian Morgan Cron)
36:38
What kind of story are you telling yourself *about* yourself?  Does it fit who you are right now, or do you think it’s time to find a new one? We’re asking ourselves some big questions on the podcast today, and Enneagram coach and podcaster Ian Morgan Cron is here to guide us! Ian is an expert in the Enneagram personality assessment (he’s a 4, by the way), and today he and Emily (a Type 2!) share how learning more about themselves through the Enneagram has helped them see why they make the decisions they do. Ian shows us how to find out if we’re living a story that’s serving who we are right now, and if it’s not, how to let go of a past that doesn’t define us and embrace a rich new story that reflects who we were made to be.

54: My Most Empowering Moment (with Team Simplified’s Brittany and Whit)
38:30
Is it a coincidence that our first podcast birthday (!) falls super close to another favorite day of ours, International Women’s Day? We don’t think so! And we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate both than inviting two of Team Simplified’s leaders on the show: our COO Brittany Werth and Creative Director Whitney Hawkins! Emily, Brittany, and Whit share about the women who inspired them and showed them how to work hard, dream big, and lead families and businesses with creativity and compassion. They talk about some of their proudest moments at Simplified, what they’re excited about for the future, and how they’re helping their littles—girls and boys—recognize the grit and grace that women of all ages and walks of life bring to the world.

53: Eight Things I Learned in my 38th Year
18:16
When you’re about to hit a big milestone, do you ever get reflective? It’s hard not to, right? Emily’s turning 39 this week, and she’s recapping eight lessons she learned in her 38th year. From discovering she might be a cat lady after all (!) to helping her kids spread their wings in new ways, Emily’s showing us that every year has lessons big and small in store for us, if we take the time to look for them.

52: Going Beyond a "Just Getting By" Life (with Mallory Ervin)
33:22

Sometimes you look up from your busy life and realize . . . this is not the story you thought would be yours. And without even realizing it, your spirit slid from “Everything is awesome!” to “I’m just getting by.” That’s what former Miss Kentucky and three-time Amazing Race contestant Mallory Ervin realized one day—and she decided she was going to do something about it. Mallory and Emily talk about Mallory’s brand-new book called “Living Fully,” where Mallory candidly shares about the addiction that gradually took over her life until she decided she wasn’t going to live that story anymore. Mallory reminds us that living a full life doesn’t mean the absence of “bad” things, or letting other people decide what makes you happy. It means despite whatever is happening, you’re choosing to pursue more of what matters to you. It means spending more time with the people and work and ideas that makes you come alive. (PS: If you need a pep talk today, then *this* is the episode for you!)

49: Calm Your Anxiety with Better Boundaries
16:14
Living with anxiety is . . . well, it’s overwhelming. Yet so many of us do, for so many reasons. Some find relief from anxiety when they talk with a therapist, or when they take medication (something that’s helped Emily, for sure). Sometimes, anxiety is a tool your body’s using to tell you something — that maybe someone has stepped over one of your boundaries, and that’s not okay with you. It could be a boundary of your time, your money, your values, your body. Boundaries affect how we live every day, but many of us haven’t really thought about them. Today, Emily’s going to start a conversation we’ll continue in a few weeks as we take a deep-dive into what boundaries are, why they’re so important — and how we can make sure we’re honoring them. Because when we honor our boundaries, we honor ourselves. And as we honor ourselves, we may start to feel some of that anxiety loosen its grip.   Thanks to our episode sponsors!

Here’s something that’s hard to admit for so many of us: it can feel like a struggle to care for our bodies in a compassionate way, to listen to what our bodies need and want. So many of us feel ashamed that our bodies don’t look a certain way, or we’re not able to do things that others can. It’s a message that’s been fed to us over and over since we were little girls. But what would our mental space look like if we could break free from those messages and begin to heal? What would it look like to love our body, just as she is right now? Today, Emily’s talking to Jess Connolly, a guide who’s spent some intentional time around breaking free from body shame. They talk about how to pass healthy, validating messages to our daughters, even as we struggle ourselves, and tangible things we can do to begin loving our body just as she is. Because sister, every single part of you is *good.*

47: Simplify Your Budget
22:02

This time of year, so many of us resolve to get better with our finances. And the cornerstone of getting good at your money might not be flashy, but it sure is effective: it’s knowing how much money you have coming in and how much is going out. That’s basically a fancy way of saying “making a budget.” And you know what? Even if you’re not a “numbers” person, you can make a budget —  and it doesn’t have to be complicated (side note: Emily didn’t think she was a numbers person either, and surprise, now she runs a business!). Today, Emily’s dropping four super-helpful tips on how to kick off your financial journey this year on the right foot. From dividing your spending into categories, to getting help from a financial advisor, no matter where you’re starting from you’ll become more confident as you make you simplify your budget and start to understand how to make your money work for you.

[BONUS] Simplifying 2022 #3: Building Up Your Friendship Village
39:44

The last few years have shown us just how important it is to have rich connections with others—that’s especially true of having strong friendships. Before the pandemic, you might’ve noticed your friendships have changed in shape and number over the year. For a lot of us, these kinds of changes can leave us feeling a little lonely, and even unsure of how to make new friends as an adult. In the third part of our Simplifying 2022 series, Emily is joined by one of her dearest friends, Jane, on the show to talk all things friendship! They talk about how their own friendship began a couple years ago, some of the challenges they’ve found in making adult friendships, and how they’ve learned to create space to be vulnerable and let others in, because authenticity helps new and old friendships blossom and grow.

44: What If the Holidays Aren’t Always Happy?
17:03

We often think of the holiday season as the brightest time of year, filled with love and warmth. And for many, that’s true. But real life doesn’t press pause at the holidays. So many of us are wading through hard things: a relationship on its last legs, a bank account stretched too thin, a problem we a child we don’t know how to solve, an empty chair at the holiday table. This season, many of us find that we’re holding grief and joy in both hands. It can feel like a hard and confusing burden to figure out how to carry any time of year, but especially this one, when we’re handed a script on how we’re supposed to perform the holidays. But today, Emily’s here to talk you through how to gently lay down that script and acknowledge what you’re going through. She’ll walk you through a few different ways you can tenderly care for yourself and honor the season you’re in right now. We wish this episode was completely irrelevant and that you had no use for it. But here at the Simplified Sisterhood, we want you to know that we’re here to help carry you through this season, however long it may be. Because in the midst of the hard days, one thing remains: the love that comes from community.

43: Emily’s Top 5 Favorite Kids Books
17:22

Books are a gift that go way beyond getting a good story in the moment. They show us worlds beyond our own, that love and joy and hope exist in the most unlikely places, that people who are different from us are kind and good and experience the same feelings we all do. These are fantastic lessons to learn at any age, but especially for kids. Emily’s sharing her favorite books for kids, from tales she enjoyed on her own to ones that she’s sharing with her children now. From picture books to Harry Potter to the Jesus Storybook Bible, these books will help you little ones find joy on the page and off.

42: Where We’re Finding Holiday Magic (BFF Chat #4)
33:06

One of the most heart-warming parts of the holidays is watching all the ways people bring magic to others, and how different families celebrate the season. Emily and her BFF Kristin share where they’re finding holiday magic this year: everything from leaving treats for delivery drivers, watching littles revel in magical moments big and small, giving experiences instead of more stuff, and the traditions that bring us closer to loved ones (even when they go hilariously awry!). So grab yourself a peppermint hot chocolate and a Christmas cookie, and get ready to rediscover the wonder of the season.

41: Four Ways to (Actually) Rest During Busy Seasons
18:57

The holiday season is here, friends! It’s a season of joy and celebration—and also a schedule that’s a bit more full than usual. The end of the year is always a busy time, and it can be hard to carve a break in the middle of it all. To help you avoid burnout and truly enjoy what the season has to offer, Emily’s got four ideas to help you feel like rest is within your grasp. As she says, “I know it can feel impossible to care for yourself in the middle of a busy season. But just remember: you weren't made to be in a season of doing and striving and trying forever. That's why the world is divided into four seasons, including winter, when the earth rests until it's ready to bloom next spring.”

40: Holding Space for Hurting Friends (with Dean Crowe of Rally Foundation)
24:09

Even at the holidays, life doesn’t stop. Amid the joy and celebration and light, we can still feel the weight of a broken relationship, a financial hardship, a diagnosis you’d give anything to take on yourself instead. It’s terribly hard to watch a friend or loved one struggle with a painful experience, but even harder sometimes to know how to give the support they need. This week, Emily’s friend Dean Crowe shares how to hold space for someone who’s hurting. A few years ago, Dean’s friends lost their son William after her battled cancer for several years. When Dean asked what she could do—beyond prayers, beyond bringing food, though those are important too—William’s parents asked Dean to find a way to fun childhood cancer research. And that’s exactly what she did, with her organization Rally Foundation. Dean and Emily talk about ways to support friends in big ways, but especially in the small ones, like showing up to clean or watching kids without being asked, even just being a sound board. Most of all, Dean reminds us to go beyond being grateful for the people in our lives. We can say we love them with our words, but even more with our actions.

39: Gifts for Kids, Partners, Parents, and Friends
27:10

You’ve made your gift lists and checked them twice—but do you need more ideas for the people in your life? Emily’s here to help! She’s sharing gifts to give to people who span across all kinds of ages and relationships: your significant other, your kids (or nieces and nephews!), your parents, your friends and coworkers. You’ll learn how to pair a few Simplified items to make an impactful gift, discover cool locally-made gifts from small makers around the county, and even favorite gift finds from companies doing good in the world. It’s hard not to get caught up in the glitz and bows and wrapping paper, but don’t forget: the holidays aren’t about gifts. They’re about spending time with the people you love, and showing them in many ways, “I see you, and I care.”

38: Simplifying the Holidays (with Nana – AKA Emily’s mom!)
38:45

Happy Holidays, you guys! After months of waiting, the most festive (and busy) time of year is here again. As you ramp up all the fun stuff—the lights, the music, the decorations, the menu and party planning and gift wrapping galore—don’t forget: it’s not your job to do what you think you’re supposed to do to make the holidays merry for everyone. Just do what matters to you and your people, and forget the rest. That’s something Emily learned from her mom, Stephanie, who’s affectionately known as Nana! Nana stopped by the podcast to share some of her best tips for keeping your special days simple but meaningful: you don’t have to deck all the halls; gifts that give experiences can be more fun than toys; and kids will love slathering store-bought frosting on store-bought cookies as much as they will homemade ones. No matter how you choose to celebrate, Nana reminds us that the holidays are special not because of what you do, but who you share them with.

37: A Cozy Capsule Wardrobe for Cold Weather
16:09

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—for *clothes.* The knits. The chunky scarves. The adorable boots. When the weather turns cool, it’s so fun to get cozy with your wardrobe. But how many times a week do you peek in your closet and think “I have literally nothing to wear”? Actually, you do—you just have too many choices. So let Emily help! This week, Emily’s taking a Simplified approach to your cold-weather closet and giving it a capsule wardrobe makeover, sharing what kinds of pieces to keep on hand and how man you need of each. Paring down your choices to your absolute favorites will make choosing outfits a breeze, and get you off to your day of apple picking and football watching (or online shopping while football watching) a little more quickly.

36: Involving Kids in Political & Gov’t Discussions (with Sharon McMahon)
38:25

If you’re a parent, you probably think every single day about how to raise kids who are kind and hopeful, who know how to ask good questions and think critically, and who know how to disagree with someone else respectfully. Sooner than we realize, kids will be adults who make decisions about to run the world, using the tools and stories and lessons they learned first at home. That’s why, little by little, as nerve-wracking as it is, Emily and Bryan are introducing discussions about government and politics at the dinner table. For tips about how to do it gracefully, Emily’s consulting a very special guest: Sharon McMahon! You may know her better as @SharonSaysSo, America’s Government Teacher, who shares non-partisan government facts and political news on Instagram. Sharon and Emily talk about how Sharon talks about these topics with her teens and nine-year-old and how to teach kids what is and what isn’t a reliable source of information, how to ask questions and let kids come to their own conclusions, and why it’s important to  debate a politician’s actions in office without demeaning their personhood.

35: Making Debt-Free Decisions for Your Home & Business (with Bryan Ley)
38:07

Making decisions about money is enough to put anyone on a feelings rollercoaster—especially if you’re trying to make decisions with a partner at home or a colleague at work. But as uncomfortable as it is, how you handle your finances plays a role in building the life you want. This week, Emily’s kicking off a brand-new series called Simplified Finances, where she’ll help you grow more confident around money so you can find the freedom to use your time and resources in ways that matter to you. And here to help is a very special guest: her husband Bryan Ley! An entrepreneur himself, Bryan has a rich background in finance and banking, and today he and Emily hash through how their parents raised them to think about money, what their conversations around money were like when they were first married (spoiler alert: there were a few sparks) and how their financial decisions have evolved as a married couple and as business owners. They share some of their biggest money mistakes, some no-shame tips for getting out of debt quickly, and why talking about money, as hard as it is, is key to using it wisely and trusting each other.

34: Three Ways to Get Ahead on the Holidays
17:41

You may have just put mums and pumpkins on your front porch, but here’s a poorly-kept secret: it’s *never* too early to start planning for the holidays. Emily’s got three easy, doable things you can do to start prepping for special meals, gifts, and schedules so you can get some time (and sanity!) back when your calendar starts to fill up soon. Here’s the thing: joy isn’t found just in the spontaneous moments. It’s also found in moments we planned for, because we made space in our lives for them. And when you’ve got time to enjoy a cup of cocoa with your family instead of frantically wrapping presents in your bedroom, you’ll hive-five yourself for getting a holiday head start.

33: Overcoming Overwhelm (Simplified Soul Care #2)
18:59

In a world that prizes what we do far more than who we are, feeling overwhelmed can feel like the status quo and even validating—while feeling relaxed means you’re not working hard enough. But that kind of thinking is wreaking havoc on our bodies and our minds. When our bodies whisper, “I can’t do this anymore” and we actually listen, when we set boundaries around what we need instead of piling more on our plates, we begin to beat back the feelings of overwhelm we were never made to carry. If you’re finding yourself weary and burned out, this episode’s for you—Emily will take you by the hand, help you slow down and find tangible ways you can carve out some space to care for yourself. Because when you believe the world actually benefits when you care for yourself, that feeling of overwhelm will become far less all-consuming.

32: How to Clean Any Room (The Keeping of Home #2)
16:09

“Home” is more than just a place. It’s the soft place to land after a hard day, where you can care for yourself and refill your well. Like anything, it takes effort to maintain a home where you can relax—and that includes cleaning it. But who has the time to give *cleaning* a ton of energy when you’ve got so many other things on your plate? 31: Unraveling the Social Highlight Reel (with Natalie Franke)
32:41

We all know spending a few mindless minutes scrolling through social media can make you feel like you’re not enough—not beautiful enough, not thin enough, not successful enough, not a good enough mom or partner or friend. But what if we completely changed the way we used our socials? Instead of just consuming, what if we used them to *actually* connect with people? And instead of competing, what if we cheered each other on instead? Natalie Franke knows how life-giving that shift can be. Natalie is an entrepreneur and founded an organization called the Rising Tide Society, and their highest value is “community over competition.” (Hooray!) Natalie shares about her new book Built to Belong, along with some practical tips to take back your socials, use them to intentionally connect with other people, and bring some life back into your online—and offline—world.

30: Managing Kids’ Anxiety in Stressful Times (with Sissy Goff)
44:00

It can feel challenging—and even overwhelming—to navigate our anxiety. We watch the headlines, we see the hardships our loved ones face, we try to be as helpful as we can while caring for ourselves. It’s a lot, and it can feel overwhelming at times. But if we feel this way as adults who can process complicated emotions, imagine how stressful and scary these times can feel for kids. Children need our help to navigate their big feelings more than ever—which is why we’re delighted to have therapist Sissy Goff on the podcast this week! Sissy is the director of child and adolescent counseling at Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville. Emily and Sissy talk about how to recognize anxiety in your kids (even when it’s lurking beneath the surface), how to strike the balance between protecting kids while raising them to be resilient and knowledgeable, and why a “calm kit” will be one of the best new tools in your toolbox. Sissy reminds us that the end of the day, kids need to feel safe. And right now, cultivating a home that's a safe place for them to land, for them to take off their masks and ask questions over lemon chicken and mashed potatoes, to climb into a soft bed with a story or two—that’s really impactful.

24: New Mom Survival Guide (BFF Chat #3)
41:30

New motherhood is a beautiful journey . . . that comes with a few bumps and a lot of questions along the way. Is my baby eating enough? Too much? Why won’t she latch? What’s that rash? Do we need to take him to the ER? Will I ever sleep again? It can feel frustrating when you don’t know what’s normal, or what advice is helpful, or which tools aren’t. If you’re a new mom or love someone who is, Emily and Kristin are here for you! As twin moms with five kids between them, they share how they weathered the physical and emotional rollercoaster after giving birth, how to actually say yes to help, and the most helpful routines they kept with their newborns. The BFFs also swap best tools and best advice, like how to choose which mom you want to be in this season (mom with a clean house? mom who wears makeup? mom who works out? pick one, not all). Because sometimes, you’ve got to survive before you can thrive. And after a while, you will get the hang of this, mama — promise.

20: Taking the Leap to Follow Your Dreams (The Story of Simplified)
20:05

It’s scary to dream big – to imagine the hard work and sacrifice that come with chasing what’s in your heart. But what if achieving your goal helps you build a life you love and helps thousands of women along the way? You’d probably decide it was all worth it – that’s how Emily feels. As Simplified celebrates its 13th birthday, Emily shares how Simplified started as a dream to help women live and work well, grew into late nights watching YouTube videos on designing note cards and invitations for an Etsy shop, and eventually evolved into creating the Simplified Planner, writing bestselling books, and creating a beloved brand. Emily shows how to keep moving forward after big life changes (because balancing a new company and a new baby is hard) and how to bounce back after making a million mistakes (because that’ll definitely happen when you try something new).

19: Raising Kids Who Include Others
30:06

Sometimes life can get a little lonely: when we move to a new town, start a new job, go to a new school. But all it takes is one person reaching out to help us feel like we belong—and that sense of belonging has a huge impact at any age. This week, Emily’s talking about how to raise kids who include others, because being an includer is the best way to create a kinder world. And she’s invited a very special guest on the show: her ten-year-old son Brady! Emily and Brady talk about what it was like for Brady to be the new kid at school a few years ago, how he felt when others included him, and how he’s tries to keep an eye out for kids who might feel alone like he once did.

10: The 2021 Spring Cleaning Simplicity Challenge
15:15

It’s hard to beat the joy (and relief!) of spring, as we all emerge from our winter dens to discover days outdoors with warmth and sunshine and the people we love. But with the changing season inevitably comes . . . the (sometimes) dreaded spring cleaning. Listen, we know spring cleaning doesn’t spark joy in everyone, but it can. A decluttered home is a space for relaxation and rejuvenation, like a spa day for our brain, and it’s more in reach than you think. This week, Emily guides us through seven simple tasks that’ll take your home from winter hibernation den to a clean spring oasis for you and your loved ones. But here’s the best part: these tasks don’t have to happen only during spring. If your efforts to declutter extend to August? So what! Spring cleaning can become summer cleaning as we’re making strides to live a more simple, decluttered life that serves us well.

9: Simple Habits That Stick
17:04

Habit. Raise your hand if that word makes you shudder. Over and over, we hear that good habits lead to happier lives. But honestly? Thinking about developing good habits can feel boring at best, or at worst, like one more thing on your to-do list. But you can harness habits you already have into simple routines that can free up your mind and your schedule. This week, Emily shows three ways to incorporate routines that’ll give you a bit more space for what matters most to you. From finding ways to make doing the dishes enjoyable, to outsourcing your least favorite chores to your kids (this is a judgement-free zone, friends), Emily shows that routines and habits don’t have to be hard. With a little effort and a lot of grace, making simple choices ahead of time can offer you the freedom and breathing room you’ve been looking for.

7: Use What You Have (Growing Boldly #2)
17:46

When you hear the phrase “use what you have,” what do you think of? Maybe the physical things you have on hand—your laptop, your bookshelf, your favorite top. But using what you have also applies to the internal traits you already possess—your grit, your perseverance, your wisdom. We all have a toolkit filled with intangible helpers at our disposal, but we often forget about them. We forget how capable we are of leading, of guiding, of loving those around us. This week, Emily reminds us that we can conquer the obstacles in our way through our own grit and determination. Right now, we can choose to tap into a growth mindset that says, “This may be hard, but it’s worth it,” and, “I won’t stop until I reach my goal.” And when we do that, we grow boldly into the life we want to build, and in the process, we encourage those around us to tap into their own power.

6: Believe in Who You Are (Growing Boldly #1)
18:59

One of life’s biggest challenges is closing the gap between who we are and who we want to be. And how do we close that gap? By growing boldly and believing in ourselves. Sure, we all feel wobbly as we meet new obstacles and figure out what matters to us. But as we learn to trust in the wisdom we’ve earned from everything we’ve faced, steadiness comes—we just have to believe it’s real and it belongs to us. This week, Emily walks us through how she’s learned to get her beliefs inside to match her actions outside, and how that alignment helps her feel like someone she can believe in. Emily shows us that despite the voices telling us we aren’t enough, we each have the time, the resources, and the worthiness right now to build a life we love.

5: Simply Defining Your Space (The Keeping of Home #1)
15:28

We all have different definitions of the word “home.” Some think of a house filled with family and friends, with love and laughter. Others think of a physical place, like sitting on a sandy beach or hiking in the mountains. But Emily defines “home” this way: it’s the space where you feel like your best self. From time to time, Emily will share ideas about what it means “keep a home” and build a space that looks and feels like *you.* This week, Emily walks us through how to think about building a home that reflects what’s important to you—the physical things like where you want to live, or what small little joys can bring life to your space. Emily reminds us that no matter where you are in life, whether you’re in a familiar place or one that feels a little new and uncertain, you can build a home that’s brimming with warmth, one with plenty of love that wraps around your people.

4: How to Make Friends as a Grown-Up (BFF Chat with Kristin Winchester)
30:25

In our circle of people, friends are some of the most special—after all, they’re the family we choose! But as we get older, making friends (and keeping them) doesn’t feel as easy as it used to be. Kids, careers, life obligations, you name it: sometimes the simple work of keeping everything going doesn’t leave much room for friendships. We’re not casually bumping into people we know at our lockers or at the coffee pot these days. So how do we make friends as a grown-up? And how do we nurture the friendships that already mean so much to us? Emily calls up her real-life BFF Kristin Winchester (affectionately known as KNW!) to chat about how they met and how they’ve stayed close, even though they haven’t seen each other for more than a year. These twin moms share that it can feel uncomfortable to be vulnerable with someone about decades worth of “your stuff,” but the risk to be seen as we are is worth it. (PS: be on the lookout for Kristin to return for more BFF Chats as she and Emily explore the fun stuff that only real friends can!)

3: Creating Calm & Clearing Clutter #1 – Simplify Your Calendar
15:26

On The Simplified Podcast, we want to give you practical tools to help you build a life you love. One of the ways we’ll do that is by helping you create calm and clear clutter from different parts of your life. And today, we’re asking you this: have the words, Gosh, I’m so stressed, rolled around your mind this week? We’ve all been there. We’re constantly working, loving, cleaning, caring, organizing, grocery shopping, and dealing with the minutiae that make up every single day—often without scheduling a break for ourselves. Our calendars are filled to the brim, every square scribbled with activities and commitments. But what if you decided to take an eraser and scrub some of those commitments off your calendar? What if you said no to a few things so you could give an enthusiastic yes to something else, like margin and rest for yourself, or more time with your family? Emily walks us through four steps to simplifying our schedules so that we can unapologetically declare what matters to us and learn to be fully present in the lives we’ve worked so hard to build with the people we so fiercely love.

2: Simplifying “The Talk” with Your Kids – A Chat with Birds & Bees
35:20

As kids grow up, parents have a lot of responsibility to walk them through hard conversations. And no conversation is as awkward as “The Talk.” Oh yes, that Talk—the one where your mom pulled you aside with hushed tones and anatomically correct drawings about your changing body that made you want to squirm right out of your chair. But you know what? The Talk doesn’t have to be the cringe-worthy conversation of yesteryear (insert *sigh of relief* here!). Emily’s joined by Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson of Birds & Bees, who empower parents to have more purposeful conversations about sex. Mary Flo and Megan walk us through a few steps to simplify “The Talk” for kids at any age, and show us that children’s minds are like a sponge: we can fill them with information drip by drip, allowing their minds to expand gradually instead of giving them a firehose of information that’ll overwhelm them, or letting someone else be the one to fill the sponge. Two big takeaways from this conversation: every family’s message around sex is going to look different—and as a parent, you are the best person to be the loving truth-teller to your kids. You’ve got this!

1: Where to Start When Everything Feels Hard
20:03

Welcome to the very first episode of The Simplified Podcast! Throughout the show, Emily will take you by the hand and help you think about some of the pressure points in your life—like overwhelm at home and work and in your relationships—and give you tactical tools to bring more calm and confidence into your days. Emily kicks off her brand-new podcast by laying all the cards on the table and asking: can we dare to build a life we love, even when life throws unimaginable challenges our way? We all worry about our families, and our careers, and our futures in the face of uncertainty, but none of us wants to spend every single day battling the anxiety monster. So how do we move forward when we feel stuck? Where do we start when everything feels hard?  Emily walks us through three steps for putting one foot in front of the other so we can step out of the anxiety keeping us frozen and into this brave truth: we may not have control of what happens to us, but we do have a choice about how we respond.
