Episode Date
The Man In The Middle: Journalist Ray Connolly
10054

Ray Connolly is a British journalist and writer. Ray is a true insider, someone who was so deeply involved with the Beatles that he almost is a character in their story. Ray also spent significant time with the Lennons from 1968 until 1980.

Ray has the distinction of having been friendly with both Lennon and McCartney—at one point even delivering messages between them when they could not talk to each other.

In this episode, Diana and Ray discuss a number of topics including Lennon/Ono's relationship, The Breakup, Paul and Linda McCartney, The Lost Weekend, and the Lennon/McCartney partnership.

Ray is the author of many books including Being John Lennon: A Restless Life,  The Ray Connolly Beatles Archive, and Sorry, Boys, You Failed The Audition. Most recently he wrote a radio play call Devoted, about his experience with Covid.

The Breakup Series: The Divorce Meeting! (Ep. 11)
7807

Diana and Phoebe discuss the infamous September 20th "divorce" meeting where John Lennon declared he wanted a divorce from the Beatles.  We examine the various recollections of the meeting from both Lennon and McCartney's perspectives in an effort to understand what actually transpired between them, how they each viewed the meeting, and how they spun the story afterward. We debate whether John's declaration was reactionary, a true cry of emancipation, a strategic move that required a countermove, or even whether this truly was the end of the Beatles. After 10 episodes of backstory, we have arrived at the divorce meeting.

Bonus Episode: The '86 Q Interview Cleaned Up/Restored (A companion to Salewicz episode (#15))
3260

In 1986 Chris Salewicz interviewed Paul McCartney for Q magazine and recorded the conversation for reference. Since then Salewicz's personal recording has made its way to YouTube.  This interview is notable because it captures McCartney in a refreshingly open and candid mood, where he was very forthcoming about his thoughts on the Beatles, John Lennon,  Yoko Ono, George Harrison, and his treatment in the press.  Unfortunately, since the audio was never meant to see the light of day, the audio is substandard and distracting.

Chris and I often reference this interview in episode #15 ("McCartney as Artist: A Conversation with Chris Salewicz)  so I have cleaned it up and included it as a companion piece to that episode.

Instant Karma: A postcard to to a friend
10354

The two guys as friends, there was never a time when they wouldn’t have fought for the other guy, so, you know, they wrote songs about it, you know John would just write Instant Karma and Paul would write a song back at him. And that’s how they fought. Writing songs at each other.” — Alice Cooper

In the first installment of the Song Series, Diana and Dr. Duncan Driver analyze the meaning of the song Instant Karma. Could there be more to the song than a surface-level reading? Could it provide more insight into the breakup period?  Diana and Duncan make the case that it does.

The Breakup Series: 10 Days in September '69: Paul PART 2 (Ep 10)
9382

In this TWO PART episode, we focus on Paul's McCartney in September 1969.
In PART 2 we examine how McCartney has been portrayed in the Beatles story and pressure test this characterization.  We do this by considering what may have been going on with Paul at this time — as well as how he may have come across to the others in the band, while also attempting to accurately portray his value and power as an artist at this time.

The Breakup Series: 10 Days in September '69: Paul PART 1 (Ep 10)
8182

In this TWO PART episode, we will track McCartney over the ten days leading up to the September 20th meeting — as we did for Lennon.

In PART ONE we discuss Paul’s BBC interview and the impact on the situation when they lose Northern Songs. We unpack Paul’s interview —one of only a handful he gave that year—and examine what he was actually communicating. This is important because far too often thoughts, feelings, and motivations are projected onto Paul based on post-narrative spin rather than his own contemporaneous words.

In part 2 we talk about how Paul is framed in the story, and pressure test this characterization.  We also try to see the story from both Paul’s perspective and from those around him.
