Description

Richmond Til We Die is an episode-by-episode conversation about the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso where we discuss the characters, their relationships with each other, and how they're able to make us laugh until we can hardly breathe one moment and then feel with the deepest parts of our hearts the next. When you're here, you're a Greyhound!

Episode Date
BONUS: I Believe in Rom-Communism (with Gwenda Bond)
2285

Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode we host New York Times best-selling author Gwenda Bond to discuss the theme of "rom-communism"  that has been so pervasive in the second season of Ted Lasso.

Luckily, Gwenda is an accomplished writer who has spent a good deal of time writing stories that fit within the rom-com genre - including her new book that is out this week, titled Not Your Average Hot Guy.

In our conversation with Gwenda,  we discuss the hallmarks of the rom-com genre, the ways in which the show adheres to and subverts rom-com conventions, and point out our favorite references in the "Rainbow" episode of Ted Lasso season 2.

We also take some time to talk about Gwenda's work on a Young Adult fiction series which features a young Lois Lane (of the Superman comics) as the protagonist and ask her how she came to love the genre so deeply.

BONUS: Annette Badland • Mae on Ted Lasso
3035

Y'all! We have been invited into the Crown & Anchor by the pub owner herself! This bonus episode is a conversation with cast member Annette Badland, who portrays Mae on Ted Lasso.

We had the opportunity to chat with Annette back in late August, after we connected with her on Twitter and our schedules finally lined up! We chatted about her involvement with Ted Lasso, her stint on Doctor Who, and her extensive work on stage and radio drama. We also discussed poetry, risky charity stunts, and what it means to find truth in a character when telling their story.

Be sure to stick around until the very end of this episode for a special surprise from Annette!

BONUS: The Real-Life Ted Lasso (with Coach Donnie Campbell)
1600

Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode, Christian and Brett  have a quick but insightful discussion with Jason Sudeikis' high school basketball coach - Donnie Campbell!

Sudeikis has shared that the character of Ted Lasso is partially based on his former coach, and we had a ton of fun talking with Coach Donnie about his upbringing in Lyons, Kansas (it's the next town over from us, y'all!), his time playing basketball and football at K-State, and those mentors who have influenced his coaching style and philosophy over the years.

If you're a Ted Lasso fan who's also had a great coach at any level, we think you'll really enjoy this episode. Plus, you may be surprised to find that Ted Lasso's accent sure sounds a whole lot like this rural Kansas boy's endearing drawl.

And Coach still lives near KC, so of course we asked him about barbecue. So maybe don't listen to this episode too close to lunch time. You've been warned.

BONUS: Tom Hendryk • O'Brien on Ted Lasso
2521

Pull up a stool, Greyhounds - we're back in the Crown & Anchor! This bonus episode is an interview with Ted Lasso cast member Tom Hendryk, who portrays AFC Richmond goalkeeper Tom O'Brien on the show.

We had the opportunity to chat with Tom back in late June, after we connected with him on Twitter shortly after his engagement to his fiancée! While we visited, he shared with us all about his work on Ted Lasso, his deep love for the Eurovision competition, and what a wild ride it has been to be a Leicester City supporter – particularly over the last decade.

We also touched on his experience as a member of a Polish dance troupe, his tenure in a production of an immersive stage version of The Polar Express, and his Covid-19 lockdown creation - a mini webseries titled The Industry.

Ted Lasso Season 1 Wrap-Up & What's Next
1810

Hello Greyhounds! Welcome to our Season 1 Wrap-Up Episode - coming to you live from our separate vacation spots! On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss some of their thoughts heading into the season two premiere of Ted Lasso.

We share something cool or interesting we learned after recording our conversations, chat just a bit about that second teaser trailer, offer some (silly) predictions for season two, acknowledge the obscene amount of Emmy nominations the show received, and provide some detailed information regarding our publication schedule as season two airs.

And we just know that you need another newsletter in your life (you actually probably most certainly don't), so please consider subscribing to Biscuits & Brisket: A Ted Lasso Newsletter to keep your inbox full of feel-good content that is Ted Lasso-approved.

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're launching a Patreon! Check it out at patreon.com/tedlassopod.

We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 10: The Hope That Kills You. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss the victoriously broken Roy Kent, Ted's emotional presence in the midst of adversity, and how we're feeling about the growth of some of our favorite characters at the end of season one.

We also talk a lot about the music in this episode: the effective use of "You'll Never Walk Alone", the surprise appearance of a Globetrotters anthem "Sweet Georgia Brown", and the melancholic ending of "Non je ne regrette rien" are all given their fair share of consideration. Have we mentioned how much we love the music team behind this show?

A Brunette Oscar the Grouch (Ted Lasso S1E9)
2980

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 9: All Apologies. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss Roy Kent's fear of irrelevance, Beard's uncanny ability to have hard conversations with his friends, and Rebecca's newfound freedom as she leans into grace after a heartbreaking attempt to shake the specter of her ex-husband Rupert.

We point out some of our favorite callback moments of the first season and join in Ted's love for Alfonso Ribeiro and marvel at the technical abilities required to pull off a convincing Carlton. Also, we talk about all those great 90s references and wonder if Ted lives his life in accordance with Buddhist thinking and principles.

BONUS: A Ted Lasso Barbecue Special (with Adrian Miller & Brendan Curran)
2487

Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode, Christian and Brett have not one, but two conversations about one of Ted Lasso's favorite things in the whole wide world: BARBECUE!

Our first conversation is with Adrian Miller, aka the Soul Food Scholar. Adrian is an author and speaker who drops barbecue knowledge like hot biscuits. We spoke with Adrian about the cultural and historical origins of barbecue in America and discussed the barbecue scene's latest efforts to pay homage to its rich and diverse past.

Our second conversation is with Brendan Curran, the owner of the clothing company Three KC. He created the Joearthur Gatestack t-shirt that Ted Lasso loves to wear when he gets all comfy in the evenings. We talked with Brendan about his company and what it's been like to see an uptick in business after his merch featured so prominently in the show, and after his products received glowing recommendations from famous Lasso superfans like Brené Brown and Jen Hatmaker. He and Christian also shared their favorite dishes at some of KC's most famous BBQ joints.

Consider this your warning that this episode may induce meat sweats and involuntary drooling.

The EQ Warriors (Ted Lasso S1E8)
2993

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 8: The Diamond Dogs. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss the insecurities of Keeley and Roy, the wisdom of the Diamond Dogs, the highs and lows of Rebecca, and the emancipation of Higgins.

We touch on just how vile and diabolical Rupert's actions are in this episode and fawn over Ted's victory and his monologue in the incredible "darts scene." Christian debunks a myth about barbecue sauce and Brett puts forth his theory about Jason Sudeikis and the "beat generation." Meanwhile, Marisa examines the fully-developed grunt language of Roy Kent.

BONUS: Jeremy Swift • Higgins on Ted Lasso
2320

Surprise! We're in the Crown & Anchor once again! This is an extra special bonus episode because it marks our first ever interview with a cast member on the show, and we're so excited to share our conversation with Jeremy Swift with y'all!

Jeremy graciously took time out of his busy schedule to chat with us about his work on Ted Lasso and his appearances in huge hits like Downton Abbey and Mary Poppins Returns. We also touched on his bass-playing chops, his musical projects, and his working relationship with his real-life wife, Mary Roscoe (who plays Mrs. Higgins). Oh, and he shared a hilarious story from his early days as an actor in the theatre that you won't want to miss.

We want to give y'all a heads-up in advance that the audio quality in this episode is somewhat below our usual standards due to some technical issues that we experienced during our recording session. But we promise that the conversation is still heartfelt and hilarious, and we hope you enjoy it. Oh, and if you're wondering about our Episode 8 conversation - don't worry - it'll be in your feed real soon. ;)

3048

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 7: Make Rebecca Great Again. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss Nate's newfound comfortability with leadership, the appearance of Anxious Ted, and the beautiful way that friendships between women are represented in this episode.

We share some quotes from author Glennon Doyle, tease out some of the complementary themes of The Iron Giant, and share which songs from the Frozen catalog we would be most likely to sing at our own karaoke night. We also take a bit of time to appreciate Hannah Waddingham's immense musical theatre talent and share a story of how "Let It Go" almost didn't make it into this episode.

2600

Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode Christian and Brett host the fantastic Dr. Mike Commito to discuss a presentation he recently gave to his colleagues at Cambrian College breaking down some of Ted Lasso's lessons on leadership.

Our conversation touches on hockey, supporter culture, and parenting. We  also chat about whether it would be more difficult to explain the offside rule or the icing rule, and how Ted would fare as the head coach of a Canadian hockey team in the NHL.

Football Is Life! (Ted Lasso S1E6)
2958

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 6: Two Aces. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss how Ted's perfection is further complicated, how Keeley is an encouragement superhero (with boundaries!), and how ~somehow~ we don't think Jamie Tartt is an insolent arsehole at the end of this episode.

And that's not all. Christian leads us on a journey through the importance Ted's framing of the Allen Iverson "Practice" Interview. We get into the origins of the "Richmond Til We Die" team chant. We marvel at Sam's subversive love for Harry Potter. And we share the items we would sacrifice in the curse fire if we ourselves had to appease 400 ghosts.

On this bonus episode Christian and Brett host the wonderful Catherynne Valente to discuss her recent essay, "This Better Not Awaken Anything In Me: How Ted Lasso Totally Did Awaken Lots of Things In Me Even Though Absolutely No One Asked It To Go So Hard."

Our conversation touches on Bob Fosse, Star Wars, Eurovision,  David Foster Wallace, Allen Iverson, and Kanye. We  also chat about how Ted Lasso exemplifies the highest ideals of Americanism, how he inspires us to become better versions of ourselves, and how we all just wish he was our dad.

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 5: Tan Lines. On this episode Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss the introduction of Vulnerable Ted, appreciate Roy's dedication to leadership, and admire Keeley's ability to remain unflappable in every situation.

Also, "Baby Shark" gets stuck in our heads, Mumford & Sons gets stuck in our hearts, and we wonder: what makes Ted Lasso impossible to be married to, what makes Jamie act like such a big jerk, and what makes Brendan Hunt remind us so much of Christopher Lloyd?

Also, what was up with those knockoff Watford kits?

BONUS: Kindness Makes a Comeback!
2082

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We've changed venues and we're coming to you from the Crown & Anchor this week to have a conversation about the Ted Lasso SAG Awards Sketch and that amazing Season 2 Teaser Trailer. On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa discuss our favorite moments and point out some small but meaningful moments of emotional intelligence in the sketch and the teaser trailer.

We also wonder where the conflict will come from in season two, go deep down the rabbit hole on the score for the trailer, and express our relief that Season 2 looks like it's not going to suck! But we still have questions. Like, how will sports psychologist Sharon fit in with the Richmond crew?   Why is Dani Rojas screaming? Who is John Wingsnight? And where is Jamie in all this? Is it July 23rd yet?

No Fight Club! (Ted Lasso S1E4)
2841

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 4: For the Children. On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa decry Rupert's abusive and narcissistic behavior, take Jamie to task for his lack of maturity, appreciate Nate's evolution from fly-on-the-wall to "well, actually" guy, and applaud Rebecca for re-learning how to receive advice and care and how to offer those things to others in return.

We also discuss the importance of accountability, remind ourselves of the first rule of Ted's fight club, and ask a few questions. Like, where has all the barbecue gone? Why do soccer players butt heads like rams when they fight? And how the h*ck does Ted Lasso not know who Robbie Williams is?! Seems like a serious hole in his pop culture knowledge if you ask us.

3012

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're on the Dogtrack this week to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 3: Trent Crimm: The Independent. On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa bemoan the fact that there is not a word for the female equivalent of "bromance," admire Ted Lasso's unwavering confidence, and consider the question: "what even IS A Wrinkle In Time?"

We also discuss ancient literary devices (that may or may not include swear words), the best Indian joints in Kansas, Trent Crimm's virtuosic writing skills, and Antonio Vivaldi! Trust us, y'all don't want to miss this episode - we're pretty sure it's gonna win an Oscar at the ESPYs. (Some have even said it's funnier than Step Brothers.)

Welcome back, Greyhounds! We're back on the Dogtrack to have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 2: Biscuits. On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa consider the disarming thoughtfulness of Ted Lasso, examine the differences between Ted and Beard's coaching philosophies, and point out what we think are some of Ted Lasso's "Lessons for White Dudes."

We take some time to discuss comfort food and how it has the power to help us climb the ladder of self-actualization. (seriously!) Then we share our own first concert / best concert experiences and lament the fact that there is a serious lack of 90s hip-hop on the show's soundtrack after this episode.

2847

We are proud to present the actual, official first episode of Richmond Til We Die (for realsies)! Like Ted himself, we feel a bit under-qualified but plan to get by with unshakeable determination, relentless positivity, a friend by our side, and a mustache that could win a blue ribbon at the Texas State Fair.

On this episode, Christian, Brett, and Marisa have a conversation about Season 1, Episode 1: The Pilot. We point out the most convincing (and least believable) soccer moments, discuss the Sex Pistols and Walt Whitman, and drool over Kansas City barbecue. We also take some time to consider the deepest hurts of some of the main characters in this series - including those of AFC Richmond's beloved, ever-optimistic gaffer.
