Juju: Siouxsie and The Banshees
00:37:42

Early Prophets of Dark Deviant Magic & Voodoo
(Siouxsie sings about sick serial killers and surveillance cameras.)

Lol introduces:
Nightshift as John McGeoch’s Finest hour.
Its Shimmering Tension - a Simmering Sizzling Juggernaut.
If Budgie was forced to choose, Nightshift would be his finest hour too!

Lol says,
“Budgie reintroduced the ride cymbal back into the lexicon of drumming, without that ride cymbal it would be nothing! A sinister sexy cauldron swirling around.”
Budgie blushes and shares his admiration for Animal and Louis Bellson!

Budgie tells of,
The Banshees visiting The Cure recording Pornography at RAK London.
The Cure kept a well-stocked bar for visiting minstrels and wastrels!
You’ll always find Drummers in the Kitchen at Parties.

Lol and Budgie say,
Juju and Pornography go together like a Cloak and Dagger.
Both recorded live in a big studio with no separation.
Juju songs played live before recording, just like a new band.

John McGeoch said,
It’s more Hitchcock than Hammer Horror.
More Blood dripping on a Daisy, than Fangs biting flesh.

Into The Light
John McGeoch used a gizmo with cog wheels to bow his guitar.
Budgie develops Octopus limbs.

Lol says,
Bands after the Banshees didn’t have that tension. The drop and the twist is all.
The push and pull gives the songs their strength. Juju is the sound of a band with a Coherent Narrative - they knew what they wanted. This version of The Banshees IS The Banshees. They Look and Sound like a real band with Authentic Chemistry.

Budgie says,
Every day arriving to record at Surrey Sound Studios, felt like a sunny morning!

Lol sums it Up,
To appreciate the lyrics, we don’t need to know all the details.
Like a movie, the Best albums reflect the times and the Cultural Situation.
Juju was ahead of its time.

1977: The Man Who Fell to Earth - David Bowie - Low
00:21:35

And how it was that….
Lol didn’t revere HIM until Low.
How HE was L’Homme Existential with the Hennaed hair .
Budgie remembers HIM making the duffel coat cool.
HIS music and lyrics.
HIS harmonica on Low returns on Blackstar.

‘What In The World’…
Briny Eggs Wrapped in Offal downed with Halves of Beer down the pub!
(To be said very fast after drinking a yard of ale)

‘Sound’…
the Glam drummer from the Spiders and Woody Woodmansey’s U-Boat
Panic in Detroit and Rebel Rebel, Sowing the Seeds of Punk.
Glam rock it wasn’t just the Visuals

‘and Vision’…
Budgie is reading Paul Morley’s Bible - The Age of Bowie.
1977 Bowie appears on Marc Bolan’s TV show. Bolan is still in Glam rags - HE has moved on
HE had reinvented himself - a pivotal point - Lol could understand HIM now
Bowie was accepted by the Punks and the New Romantics - HE synthesises Society and Culture

‘Always Crashing in The Same Car’…
Budgies deems Nick Lowe’s spoof of Low - Unfunny!
Tony Visconti on The Secret Setting of the Eventide Harmonizer
and the LOW snare drum sound, “it fucks with the fabric of time!”
Bowie’s drum sticks handed over from Dennis Davis to Sterling Campbell
LOW arrives as Lol and Budgie begin. Influenced by its tangents. WE never tire of listening to LOW.
LOW gave us permission – LOW stated there are no rules!

1977: No Elvis, Beatles, or The Rolling Stones
00:21:52

Lol's orange punk jacket and pants from the thrift store and pointy boots. The album that went with this outfit was the Clash’s first album. The picture on the back of the album is the Notting Hill Gate carnival.

Lol is in it mentally and spiritually.  “We’re a garage band, we come from Garageland.”

The Stranglers on the college juke box for Budgie. For Lol, it was white punks on dope on the college juke box.

Janie Jones was the track for Budgie on The Clash album. The lyrics were it for Budgie. The message was the thing for Budgie and Lol.

Lol's No Change jacket was his Clash clothes. Ian Curtis had a No Future jacket.

Lol danced with Jean Jaques and lived!

The Clash at Top Rank Bingo and the Leisure Center, a faceless new-brutalist building.

The tabloids bought the police to the gigs; Joe tried to calm the crowds and get off the PA!  Undercurrent of violence. Budgie met Paul Simonon steel brush hair and chiseled features. Attitude was key!

Slim Jim Phantom & Jennie Vee: Everyone Has To Agree On Eddie Cochran!
00:45:30

1981 The Stones turn up to see The Stray Cats in London!

Slim Jim meets Siouxsie and Budgie.

Lol sees The Cats strut their stuff at the Marquee.

They’re the greatest band in the world but, they have No name!

This is how they started

New Hair Cuts! Got all the Gear! Hello Blue Cats!

Any new haircut was cool.

Lot of cross-over in punk-era London.

Stray Cats - the most British, US new wave band on MTV.

They thought Terry Thomas and Ringo Starr would greet them at the airport in London.

Floors we have slept on! An 18-yr old Jennie Vee, made pilgrimage to London, took up bass and guitar and convinced John Peel she had a band.

The truth: There’s no band without a sick drummer!

Budgie did his 10,000 hours at Eric’s Club Liverpool. Budgie’s secret? he sings all his beats and sang himself to sleep to the Beatles. We All love Ringo getting inside the song and the pure joy of drumming. Drumming as a bloodsport!

Lol and Tony Kanal share a moment at The Greek with all Jim’s pals! Jennie Vee says, the greatest feeling is just to rock . Don’t do no crazy riff, just the joy of the moment is all.

The county clerk married Jennie and Jim on Zoom. We plan The big wedding party all star gig!

Lol was married in Vegas. Dick Smothers was next in the line. Budgie got married in Hong Kong.

Ronnie lane bumped into the Cats .Gave them the space in his house to be the band they became .. A hybrid of Punk & New Rockabilly. An emotional moment for Budgie . Still singing the songs. All roads lead to Eddie Cochran!

The Museum of Emotion and Connection
00:48:26

A thread that pulls you through the years

@rockhall-13 million people in 27 years!

Cleveland, Bowies' first us gig here, Jimi Hendrix, came back. Alan Freed coined the phrase rock and Roll.

I.M. Pei designed the museum building after he had seen The Who and Stones. Created a very energetic and emotional structure. The home of America's great art. Lol agrees that the design is suitable. The most relevant museum to people's lives The museum of the people. Lol sees his Let's Go To Bed outfit! In a case!

The HOF was very emotional and blew Lols mind only 351 Bands in the HOF. Budgie knows the magic language of RnR. The hardest part is, it's such a big story from Punk, Patti Smith and Television. Lol and Budgie pledge to raise money for the new Post Punk annex "maybe it will be named after them, "Lols and Budgie Collection of Curious Creatures "( ?!) Lols brother still listens to John Lee Hooker. Budgie and Lol learned Blues on Sunday lunchtime at the pubs of England. The constant back and forth of the form is The engine. Budgie has the tip of Ringo's drumstick. Played an old banjo, and it became Budgies Excalibur sword!

Greg ran the Philadelphia record exchange. It's still going. The center of the place for our tribe. Even on the internet, record stores are a valuable items. Their connection with live music is vital still. Rock and Roll will never die! Fans know a lot, and they are reservoirs of memory . Post-punk is still loved. Budgies confesses he liked Glen Miller's "in the mood." Budgies knows there's no crying in baseball (only in music). Music condenses time. Get on stage, and you are ageless. Budgie and Lol are still here and thriving. Lols confesses his zombie love. It's all humbling and flattering at the same time. Budgie finds out Howling Wolf's guitar is in the HOF. Budgie recounts the sad story of Joe Strummer's guitar and sings the drums of Tommy Gunn! The jukebox in his head.

Zola Jesus Pt. 1: The Collective Unconscious
00:44:41

Music is an all encompassing but insular process. A different air. Space and place is important . The Creatures played blind mans buff with a map of the world. The amazing three day New Years eve! Budgie bought Heinz baked beans and some drum sticks to Hawaii. A sense of occasion. To go outside of the normal experience. You have to grow by being put in a different environment and then responding. You need to unravel. Life is about risking things. Lol found Love in Los Angeles. Punk gave us a kick. People work more with references now rather than their own experience. Constant access to music from references that was made from an idiosyncratic place. No to curation, it's not life! Zola is in this for the music not the industry which does not reward innovation. More gradient less algorithm. Weightlifting to the Dead Kennedys.

She was a 6 year old opera singer. Resplendent in Red in Seattle like a zoo animal. Performing is a chance to let your ID go wild and lose control! Diamanda Galás as example. Budgie and Lol found our tribe in our youth. As did Zola growing up in Wisconsin in the woods. Feeling like an introverted outcast. Making music is like putting out the feelers to find people in common. That’s what music community is about. Music holds communal catharsis. We are in a period of transition - pandemic, politics, change is coming. We’re still hopeful after all these years!

Fog, Fairgrounds and Infamy!
00:32:36

Strangers visiting were a different breed, an assault on our sensibilities. The people were real. It was candy, floss, toffee apples, and diesel. No internet, so no real connections/Lol had the library books and records, to develop a sense of discovery. Make a band and travel the world. Minor eccentrics would visit the workshop of humanity. A selection of institutional people that we interacted with. Mass murders at the fair? Extraordinary experiences then to the local pub. Lol had his ear pierced at sixteen, a rite of passage, bottles of cider in the park or on the couch. Budgie liked the waltzer. And the green caterpillar. Childhood images. Lol loved the ghost train too, banging doors.

Tales of the unknown. Peepshow Budgie recording the secret carousel, thrills of the unknown

Monsters under the bed and the hot water heater - Yikes! Country Road at night with fog is not scary. The old fighter pilot was buzzing about on a motorcycle. Run lads! Mists and tree lamps are melancholy, not frightening. Misty moors Dickens' Great Expectations and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Crucifix Lane, the London hospital, and Peter Sutcliffe and Dennis Nilsen OMG !!! Screaming and police whistles and tall black shadows with a cape. Isle of dogs and Melrose Avenue.

Horace Panter: Ska’d for Life
00:47:37

First album takes three years and the next a millionth of the time

Did a new Specials album no Ska! Probably a new record coming, and Specials unplugged works great. All looking well! Lockdown produced covers of protest songs Terry has to have no distractions and go to Paris.

First tour since lockdown was fantastic. Lol remembers his first Specials show in 1979 at Bilzen Festival absolutely spectacular! It was the best show they ever did. Life changing! Utterly mental.

Lol learns backgammon. No Tour games for the Specials. Budgie played subbuteo with The Cult. Banshees played Clue and Yahtzee. The Cure played football and cricket inside the stadium. Bad idea.

The Specials weren’t mates. Two types of groups: mates from School (The Cure) and the guy with a master plan and cherry picked guys (The Specials) Class of 1979 the music was the common thread for the specials. Banshees had a ferocious kind of loyalty. Terry was a punk rocker in the squad

Burning Spear and Marley were the road in for Horace. Budgie remembers The Slits. He knew how to rehearse as did Lol three years for the Cure rehearsal no Christmas for the Smiths - the Cure are banging away in the woodshed.

Middle of the 70’s in England was full of discontent. Music was our salvation. Music is transcendental.

In 1977 Bowies Low and The Clash. Nick Drake miserable and beautiful. The way you get the music wrong is the way you get your own sound. the Skatellites told The Specials 'you play too fast". Garvey’s ghost/Burning Spear and Bob Marley live. Led Zeppelin scared the s*&% out of him.

Horace says he has very little to complain about. The Specials was a great way to see the art galleries of the world. When you're hot, you're hot then you spilt up. Why don’t you take a break? Lol likes being liberated at sixty.

It's mostly about relationships. We find out that The Specials would do any festival The Cure were on because we had a proper guitar tuner. Still best of mates all these years later!

Will Sergeant: 1977 When We Were All Punks
00:47:09

We are chuffed to see the Bunnyman! Will just got off tour; it was 11 out of 10- weird!

People still like our band's music all these years later. Ancient history. It's just weird? Bugger all else to do so we plundered a lot of different music. Whats a wooly back? A sheep in wolf's clothing. Paul Rutherford in radical Pajamas. Band names had to be short to write on yer gasbag. Until Punk, music life was unobtainable, Punk said you don't need any of that. Will's book is a social history. It's Brilliant: Kirby = Crawley. Will explains the "Cure "photo in his book. Wills brother thought the Cure were the Bunnymen! We had identical suits, perhaps? MVCU, where Budgie was happy to spray the door. Boris makes a surprise appearance on the show! One night of madness in Crawley, like being in the trenches.

Will saw the Cure, Passions, and Associates in Liverpool Erics. All bands played Erics despite the beer swamp and low ceiling. It was a big deal when Budgie left Liverpool. Budgies gone, what are we going to do? Grist for the mill works.

The three survivors. There are plenty of casualties out there; Budgie, Lol, and Will discover that they have a Psychic commonality.

Fearlessness & Fear: Boys Don't Cry
00:40:18

The Cure’s first album, Three Imaginary Boys, released in 1979, was made into a compilation called Boys Don’t Cry for the American market in 1980.

Welcome to a slightly different format of Curious Creatures, in which Lol and Budgie discuss a specific topic in more detail.

In this first episode, Lol talks about Boys Don’t Cry and Cure manager Chris Parry’s penchant for not wearing socks, a naked drum sound, or playing the drums naked? Was it The Jam’s kit, or was it XTC’s?

Being Fearless and Full of Fear. Red light fever, two hands are faster than one!
The urgency of accuracy and the importance of serendipity in creativity.
And finally, for the secret of Fire in Cairo - Tune in on Tuesday!!

00:17:57

Lol and Budgie discuss[es] birthdays they have spent in the studio (Lol for 17 Seconds) or on the road having the bus party (Budgie). Everything closed in London at Christmas. We only got home just in time. Every day is Saturday in a band, even if it's Monday. Unless it's Boxing Day. We would be working every weekend. Hey, we signed up for it. We were the monks of music, leading a disciplined life, sort of! Budgie reveals a lovely Birthday gift he had made for Siouxsie and names the designer who made the beautiful blue shirt in his Wikipedia photo. But why was Lol wearing a pink dress?

Curious Cuisine
00:33:28

In which lol and Budgie discover why Lol won't eat leftovers.

They leave home and make Lobby Scouse and omelets. Alice Cooper and pressure cookers. Wasps and Bangers, baked potatoes, baked beans, and tea!

It's necessary to have your own caterers on tour. Meeting other bands at a service station means-punk rock food fight! The Italians and Dutch have gourmet truck stops. Lol enjoys the flower bowls of Holland, while Budgie likes the comfortable, considerate seating in Tokyo eateries. The Greek restaurant in London was smashing. Literally!

Kate Schellenbach Pt. 2: Los Angeles
00:34:09

Kate comes to LA. We learn the drummers are driving the ship. Holistically in control of everything! Like Lol, Kate got her DL in California. NYC is okay when you're young but it's hard. Kate started to work in TV. Never thought she would end up in LA. You have to be open and willing to take risks. LA is a small town masquerading as a big city where you can wear big boots and coats even when you don't need too. Beach Goths! Kate and Lol discuss the Thomas guide and getting around LA in 20 mins. Kate knows about the knowledge! She did the artists way (like us) fell in love with someone in LA  and ended up working with Ellen DeGeneres after an LA lunch! Even despite her NYC  parking anxiety. Now she produces talk shows. Budgie asks Kate to critique us. We are walking the fine line and flowing - phew! Thanks for holding our hands, you cheeky thing! Drums are our communication. Telling the story. Never plain vanilla, we had a different approach.

Kate Schellenbach Pt. 1: New York City
00:49:58

We realize we are all drummers! Budgie makes a voodoo dolly of Siouxsie. We find out Kate's teen fantasy comes true when she replaces Clem Burke in Blondie! Kate reveals at 15 she blagged her way into the Ritz to interview the Banshees. Budgie let Kate sit behind his kit! She lets him know he's her favorite drummer!! Cheeky! Budgie and Lol and female drummers we have known. Her alter ego "Kate Nails, from The Face" got to see Culture club at the Palladium for free! A lucky life. Because of clubs and cool kids and the Beastie Boys. Concorde stories. The tailor on the plane in London measured you for your suit that was presented to you on arrival in Hong Kong! Mach 2!

Strange Shows Pt. 2: Hello Darkness, My Old Friend
00:14:45

Lol and Budgie play the Utah rodeo - a dust bowl of outsiders. The "Lush Lounge" provided libations as did the aptly named "Eat Your Heart Out" mixing up buckets of cocktails on the road. Budgie passed the drinks across the kit in Colorado. Lol had 23 shows in Australia and life seemed just like the Blues Brothers.  Sorry about the show! The banshees play the Whisky a Go Go - why are people wearing bin liners (trash bags) in the heat? Our second home was the USA..." it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy" and I, I know am one.

Mason Silva: Thrasher's 2020 Skater of the Year
00:46:25

IT makes no sense, Budgie and Lol find out, if you don't like music because it's like not breathing! When you discover the passion and know what you want to do with your life is mostly a teen thing. Hard to find stuff is what makes you want to do it more the more obscure the better But don't try too hard to be different. You only need three chords and the truth is true even in skateboarding. You need a good crew whatever you do. Lol and Budgie discover there are a lot of similarities, for instance the stairwell is a creative place. The drums are definitely the drama in the songs with the lyric. Liberated cymbals! The goldmine that was Ray Man's store.

Origins Part 2: The Prodigal Sons of Post Punk
00:29:09

In which Budgie and Lol discover they were a little scared of normal. We knew what we didn’t want to sound like, but loved the Ramones/the Clash/Bowie/Buzzcocks and T-Rex. Music was the future there were no niceties for us. A cup of tea and potato for two was it! Punk put different people in the spotlight, something was happening. Then the fairytale evaporated and they had to find out who they were.  You have to be destroyed in the fire to come out anew.  Budgie and Lol ricocheted around the world. The prodigal sons of post punk come home.

Origins Part 1: Rogues and Ruffians
00:31:58

In which Budgie and Lol reveal it all started at the fairgrounds of England. Like a Stephen King novel? The teddy boys, rockers and… girls! Pink Floyd played our bowling alley! Post war England was grim and our true education was punk. Out of the depression we escaped through music. Even the Partridge family! Budgie learns stagecraft in his secret life. Lol stays up all night at Robert's. Desperation and osmosis drove us on. To where? Hear the answer in Part 2 next week!

Strange Shows Pt. 1: Gangplanks and Flashlights
00:19:38

In which Budgie goes to the Florida keys with the Banshees and Sioux only has a flashlight for her light show!  Sometimes the best shows are when nobody is there. Lol was scared in Denver on Halloween by Fred Munster! A misty lake in Finland never gets dark for Lol and the Cure.  Budgie feels the heat with Love and Rockets in Arizona . It's Hot, hot, hot with Lol in Texas. Those British boys abroad! From hysteria in Newcastle to perfect calm in Tokyo. Lol, and Budgie have seen it all. Gangplanks and Freud. Beatlemania and Secret security. Bring all your fans along on the Bullet train!

Tim Burgess: Psychedelic Guru of Manchester
00:50:13

Budgie and Lol hear about Tim's first memory of Little Jimmy Osmond at 6 years old and then Buzzcocks in 1978 at ten years old. He got let in the back door of clubs went on stage in the late 80's doing his thing and nobody has told him to get off yet. The sun came out in Manchester and everyone started dancing! Tim ended up In Los Angeles as part of his childhood fantasy. We discuss destruction-touring and making records. On  Head on the Door Lol nearly set the studio alight with model racing cars. Out of chaos Budgie makes Dear Prudence. Tim lived as the Rolling Stones making Exile on Main Street. Tim gets a editor and writes a great memoir and carried on writing. Tim gets Budgie to agree to let him use his tweets to help people affected by Covid. We tell Tim he's saved music. Good man. Later on they reveal that punk produced quite a few characters as it was such a time of social change. That's why we remember them. And if Budgie doesn't know them Lol does!

Religion
00:20:35

Roped into a cult at birth. Weddings ( and funerals) were an early source of income for Lol. The Latin mass was mysterious to us ! At the advent of the folk mass, our faith lapsed but the guilt remains, however. Confession is not necessarily good for the soul if you can be revealed! Lols is not a fan of organized religion. At 14 it all changed. Budgie was powered away for decades until at 38 he finally got a handle on his own feelings. Budgie surmised it's a very strange theatrical show they run at the church. But something in the past has helped the present. Kicking against the restrictions. Running away to join the circus. Anti-establishment by virtue of what we experienced as children. We are the stiff upper lip of the post-war British combined with the fire and brimstone of the straight jacket of religion made punk inevitable.

Terri Nunn (Berlin) joins Lol and Budgie this week on Curious Creatures. Lol and Budgie discover that the journey is half the battle. The three discuss whether or not musicians have social issues, and if music is the bridge (apparently it’s good for your heart). Lol, Budgie and Terri wonder if the magic of music lasts forever. Do kids listen to and draw their own inspiration from their parents’ music now? Terri talks about having the opportunity to go back and reassure her younger self that it’s all going to be ok. Later on Lol and Budgie get into drum machines and decide they are ok - AND they’re not afraid of them!
