Intro [00:15]
Topic [01:30]
Wind down [23:48]
Outro [26:04]

---

Quote of the episode from Dan: "This is probably the biggest single negative impact they've done ever since they've rolled out Google Analytics 4."

Quote of the episode from Dara: "It feels like a bit of a backward step because one of the biggest benefits I think when GA4 was announced was the fact that it was so much less restricted."

---

Dan and Dara are back, and this week are discussing the recent update from Google Analytics where they are now enforcing their Data API quotas. Since 7th November 2022, Looker Studio reports that connect to Google Analytics 4 data are subject to GA4 Data API quotas. Reports that exceed these quotas will break, and Dan is more than annoyed...

A massive thanks to Rogier Kuiper who suggested this topic!

Intro [00:15]
Topic [01:21]
Wind down [23:10]
Outro [24:57]

---

Quote of the episode from Dan: "Google's going to do what Google's going to do and we'll be on the receiving end of it."

Quote of the episode from Dara: "just because you have been using UA360 doesn't mean you're going to need, I'm just going to call it GA4-360, you don't necessarily need it"

---

This week Dan and Dara discuss the recent announcement that the sunsetting of GA360 has been pushed back 9 months to the 1st July 2024. The news comes bundled with other new feature announcements such as custom channel groupings, automatic GA4 property creation and native bidding in DV360. What does this mean, why did they do it, and what now? These are some of the questions Dan and Dara discuss.

The blog post from Google with the announcements is http://bit.ly/3UL2ySz.

Intro [00:15]
Topic [03:29]
Wind down [42:00]
Outro [45:09]

---

Quote of the episode from Ellen: "I think people don't realise that disabilities is such a vast group, you can't just bring one person in to resolve all the disability issues. You need to bring people in from, you know, a wide range of different backgrounds in order to understand the complexities of disabilities, because it's not just a kind of a one size fits all approach."

Another quote of the episode from Ellen: "Google Analytics 4 seems to be that tiny little bit more accessible in terms of the functionality and where to press and it's a lot more clearer of where to press. However, you still can't use a screen reader, which I found quite astonishing."

Yet another quote of the episode from Ellen: "It's quite surprising for a company like Google, especially when you know they're very driven in terms of trying to attract people with invisible differences such as dyslexia and autism and ADHD. They seem to understand the untapped talent that these types of people have, yet then they're being excluded from being able to access Google Analytics, which I find a bit strange. It's like, how are you connecting those dots? It just doesn't make sense to me."

---

This week Dan and Dara are joined by Ellen Cole - an award-winning Marketing, PR and Social Media marketer with a focus on inclusivity and accessibility in digital. Ellen discusses their experience working with invisible differences, and how businesses large and small can make positive steps towards making their social media and marketing more inclusive for all.

Intro 00:15
Topic 05:33
Wind down 32:55
Outro 36:14

---

Quote of the episode from Stacey: "I was looking at the SEO for my site and one of the queries that came up was “I hate GA4” and it was hilarious"

Quote of the episode from Dan: "it probably took me longer than I'd care to admit to really understand GA4 well enough to realise that it's actually pretty good."

Quote of the episode from Dara: "the business is only just about starting to understand analytics in general and now they're being told there's this new version of all of that data."

---

This week Dan and Dara are joined by Stacey Harper, a fellow GA4 expert and trainer! They discuss war stories, hidden features and the huge importance of a migration strategy/plan for migrating to GA4. And remember, never ever push the 'UA events in GA4' button!

---

This week Dara is joined by fellow Measurelabber Katie to discuss her recent talk at MeasureFest (part of brightonSEO). Katie talks though the process of putting together her presentation and getting up and speaking in front of a croud for the very first time. Intro 00:00
Topic 00:48
Wind Down 27:41
Outro 29:54

---

Quote of the episode from Dan: "Google can try to guess what it is you mean, but it's a stupid machine and often gets that wrong."

Quote of the episode from Dara: "I get what you're saying about how maybe there's an argument for this one, but I'm greedy and now I want to look at device type by query string parameters and I can't, so I'm upset."

---

This week Dan and Dara react and discuss the recent announcement of the schema changes in the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Data API. Are Google going backwards by (re)introducting scope compatibility, or is this what was always missing and will now help the transition from Universal Analytics?

---

Quote of the episode from Dan: "Time and time again, we get people with Universal Analytics and they're using their data and just assume it's complete, without realising their cookie banner is not tracking a bunch of stuff when people don't accept the cookie to be set."

Quote of the episode from Dara: "People who are desperately trying to get upskilled on GA4 then have to explain GA4 to the wider business, who maybe still don't really fully understand Universal Analytics."

---

This week Dan and Dara reflect on the current state of play with Google Analytics 4 (GA4), with migrations being a hot topic at the moment for Measurelab. But they try to also look beyond purely the migrations, and discuss what they think might be coming around the corner for GA4 - especially when Universal Analytics (UA) is turned off in July 2023.

#45 Forecasting analytics with machine learning (with Richard Fergie)
32:39

This week Dan and Dara are joined by Richard Fergie (creator of Forecast Forge) to chat all about forecasting with machine learning models, and the flaws in Google Analytics 4's machine learning aproach to watch out for.

Her's Richard's rules for using any machine learing forecast model:

1) No machine learning is allowed until you've plotted the data!
2) Make the simplest Forecast that you can
3) Look at where is it that this simple forecast is wrong, and correct for it
4) Repeat te process until you get fed up, or you get diminishing returns

#38 How do you measure the return on analytics?
21:49

This week Dan and Dara discuss a listener submitted topic on how to measure the return on analytics. After arguing about the flawed premise of the quest, they explore different ways that analytics specialists and analysts can measure a tangible return for their hard work.

The key ways that were discussed to measure the impact (or return if you will...) of analytics is via:
- Optimising marketing campaign ROAS
- Improving website/app CVR via testing and CRO programs
- Product optimisation to reduce churn or improve engagement and thus LTV
- Time saving via automation and trusting the data
- Impartiality meaning that you can recommend the best course of action, even if it's not the most popular
- Damage control - minimising negative impact when it's inevitable (i.e. COVID-19)

#35 Is tracking too much a bad thing?
26:04

This week Dan and Dara chat about the troubles of tracking too much in Google Analytics, especially when you come to migrate everything from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4.

Not much to mention or link to in this episode - but thanks for reading the show notes (if you are)!

Dan's two questions he asks when it comes to seeing if you need to migrate some data from UA to GA4 are; Is this data needed? And if yes, is this needed in GA? Remember GA (GA4 more so than UA) is a marketing tool, so if it won't help you measure your marketing activity, then it probably doesn't need to be in GA. This is a general rule, there are exceptions of course.
