The saga of Wee Willie McLean
1046
In 1934, Wee Willie McLean represented the United States at the 1934 World Cup. Then, just a few years later, he vanished. Pablo Maurer and Matt Pentz spent two years gathering as many details as they could about Willie’s life to find out what happened to him. They wrote a story about it and it’s absolutely epic, and altogether human.  The story is linked in the show’s description, so please do give it a read. But today, I want to share a clip from a talk Pablo and Matt did with the Society for American Soccer HIstory, where they discussed the origins of the story, and one of the big breakthroughs in their reporting.  The Wee Willie story: https://theathletic.com/3363062/2022/06/14/wee-willie-mclean/ The full talk with SASH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5wwxC8WJZM&feature=youtu.be Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool’s big week
765
Liverpool are FA Cup champions, but that was just the beginning of an incredibly pressure-packed couple of weeks. That continues today with a Premier League visit to Southampton – a win, combined with Man City’s draw with West Ham over the weekend, would put Liverpool just one point behind Man City going into the final games this weekend. And then, of course, there’s the Champions League final the week after. There are injury worries, they’ve hired an additional medical staff to deal with it….it’s a lot to digest. Today, The Athletic’s Liverpool reporters Simon Hughes and James Pearce join Steve Hothersall to talk through what to make of those injuries, lineup choices for today’s game, and Steven Gerrard’s role in potentially delivering a Premier League title…all of this is in a clip from The Red Agenda podcast. 1728
Today’s episode comes to us via The Lead, The Athletic’s daily podcast covering one story in the sports world at large each day:  Roman Abramovich endeared himself to Chelsea fans almost immediately when he purchased the club back in 2003. But now, in the wake of Russia's war against Ukraine, questions and concerns about Abramovich, his past, and his ties to Vladimir Putin have resurfaced, and the Russian billionaire announced last week that he will be selling the team. The Athletic's Matt Slater joins us to explain what we know (and don't know) about Abramovich's ties to the Kremlin, what the sale of Chelsea means for the future of the club, and if all of this will lead to a day reckoning for the Premier League and the question of who should be allowed to buy a team. Another twist in the Washington Spirit sale saga
843
Over the past several months, the Washington Spirit have won the NWSL championship, and also been at the center of a very public tug-of-war over ownership of the club.  On one side: Steve Baldwin and Bill Lynch, two co-owners who together had or controlled a majority of votes among the club’s ownership group. On the other side is Michele Kang, another co-owner, who offered well over market value for the club, but has also been publicly critical of Baldwin during his time as controlling owner of the team.  Though Kang’s offer was for $35 million dollars, The team was thought to be on the verge of a sale to another group for $25 million dollars.
