Fasting Q&A: Fasting and Training, Tracking Weight, Fasting With an IUD, Bacon Fat, and More
41:49

Episode #78

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. How do you manage fasting when training? [01:48]

2. When you track your weight on the scales weekly, why does the weight shown seem to go from the same to a loss (or not) between days 6 and 7? How do you get a true reading? [10:16]

3. I’ve been eating low carb and fasting now for more than 5years. I’ve fallen off the low-carb wagon for months. Recently, I did a reset three-day fast and I wanted to continue but I felt horrible. My ketones were pretty high. Does this mean my blood is acidic? Would it have been dangerous to continue? Or am I just not yet fat-adapted again? [15:47]

4. I have an IUD and don’t have a period. How can I figure out when my cycle is? I like the concept of eating differently at different stages of my cycle? [23:56]

5. I haven’t heard you recommend bacon fat and lard as one of the fats to cook in. Is there a reason? [32:33]

6. How long does insulin stay raised after a meal? [34:24]

Episode #74

In today’s episode, Terri and Nadia discuss the Hot Topic of Self-Sabotage.

Their conversation covers some theories about why we ALL self-sabotage and then how we can come to understand our unique reasons and learn ways to address these underlying causes. Lastly, Nadia answers one of your questions:

Women like me are constantly told, “Women should not fast.” It was recently suggested to me to eat complex carbs and starchy vegetables a week before my cycle starts and my body will thank me for it. I'm curious why it's said that women need carbs but men do not. [35:58]

Fasting Q&A: Children and Snacking, Food Intolerances Since Fasting, Meals to Break a Fast, Hair Loss, and More.
35:32

Episode #72

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I obviously don't allow my children (11 and 13) to fast. They are hungry quite often though. Should I be guiding them to not eat snacks and to just eat larger meals so as to build a strong foundation of not snacking for their future metabolic health or should I listen to their hunger cues, considering that they are growing, and give them snacks on demand? Healthy snacks of course! What will set them up for future success health-wise? [02:17]

2. I have been into extended fasting for over a year now and have noticed I suddenly have all of these food intolerances that I didn’t have before, or haven't had since I was a little girl. As a child, I was lactose intolerant, but as I got older, I was able to tolerate most dairy. Since I've started extended fasting, I can’t tolerate any dairy at all without extreme flatulence and digestive consequences in the bathroom later. I’ve also noticed increased sensitivity to eggs, amongst other things. Has extended fasting caused these intolerances? [08:32]

3. What are the best foods to break a fast with? Is it best to break with a regular meal or something soft and easy to digest? I’ve heard eggs aren’t a good choice but it seems like eggs would be easy on an empty tummy? [12:22]

4. How many eating days should you have between fasting? I like the 60/40 rule but a lot of people are saying you have to eat half as long as you fasted. Is that from another source besides The Fasting Method because 60/40 is definitely not half and people are pretty adamant in the Facebook group that you have to eat half as long as you fasted. [18:27]

5. I’ve been doing OMAD for the last 4 months and my hair is falling out, a lot. Also, my periods are now very long and heavy, and my anxiety is through the roof. What happening and what can I do to fix it? [22:09]

6. What do you think about taking beef liver supplements to obtain electrolytes?

You recommend taking electrolytes as needed, but how would our ancestors have obtained salt and magnesium? [26:30]

3. Is there a fasting protocol I should do or avoid before blood tests? [06:43]

4. I’ve had a uterine ablation. I do not have a period but technically a cycle. How might this affect my fasting? Is it similar to menstruating women? [10:52]

Fasting Q&A: Fruit Teas, Treats After Meals, Fasting During Menopause, Self-Sabotage, and Post-Menopausal Bleeding
40:40

Episode #68

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Terri and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. If fruit tea is "herbal", such as mango-passionfruit herbal tea, will it break a fast? Will the sweet flavors alone spike insulin and break a fast? [02:38]

2. I am working on improving my food choices. To be fair, I make healthy choices when I go to the grocery store and when I make food. The problem is that I have a habit of having a “treat” or reward after a meal or whenever I am struggling or when I want to celebrate something. I think these are keeping me from making progress. [07:38]

3. During the holidays, I have gained 13lbs back. I have been trying to get back to IF and it’s been very difficult. I think I am now menopausal as I haven’t had a period or spotting for almost one year. I’m wondering if that’s playing a role here? [13:04]

4. I am getting close to my goal weight. What I don’t understand is why as I get close, I seem to self-sabotage. Why would I do this? It is so frustrating that I am the only thing getting in my way. What should I do? [21:19]

5. I am 51 and have been in menopause for 2 and a half years now. I recently started fasting and I got my period last month. Is this from fasting? Can fasting reverse menopause? [32:28]

In this episode, Megan and Terri discuss an important distinction for everyone to understand—the difference between therapeutic fasting and a general fasting lifestyle approach. They discuss how this can feel confusing or misleading to folks newer to the fasting community. And bring in clinical examples of how many people achieve their health goals. In this episode, Terri and Nadia discuss our relationship with food:

  • Emotional eating
  • Food as nutrition
  • Why different people have different relationships with food
  • Fasting and food avoidance
  • ‘Breaking up’ with problematic foods
  • Choosing foods that best support you and making that part of your identity

Fasting Q&A

Terri and Nadia also answer two listener questions:

1. How do I lose that last 10 pounds and then maintain it? Fasting is easy but losing those last 10 pounds is not! I don’t want to keep yoyoing.. [29:04]

2. I was diagnosed with early menopause aged 39 (now 43). I would like to understand what happens with women’s hormones when they are menopausal and what about that profile makes losing weight difficult. Will fasting help? [33:09]

Fasting Q&A: Post-Partum Fasting, Potatoes and Vinegar, Kids' Eating Frequency, and More.
37:51

Episode #61

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. My baby is now 6 months old, happy and healthy and I’m still struggling to get back into fasting. Is it possible there are still fluctuating hormones at play here with lack of consistent sleep or do I need to give myself a bit more grace and start from the very beginning? [01:51]

2. I heard you say that putting vinegar on potatoes sometimes cuts the carb load. What type of vinegar should I use and how much? [08:04]

3. How much I should be eating on days I am not fasting? [14:08]

4. When you’re new to fasting, what is the best way to start? [20:32]

5. What is the best eating frequency for kids? I have a toddler & 2 kiddos in elementary school. Our pediatrician & family/friends communicate that they should all be having 3 meals + 2 snacks each day. Is this healthy? When do you transition away from snacks? [21:51]

6. For weight loss, you previously mentioned that 16/8 isn't enough. I'd like to try 24 hours/OMAD for a month and if I'm still not losing weight then I'll move to 36 hours and so on. Please give me some insights about what I need to do or not do in order to successfully fast for longer than 16/8. [32:37]

Fasting Q&A: Pre and Probiotics, CGMs, Hormonal Tests, and Fat Fasting vs Extended Fasting
27:31

Episode #57

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. Can we take prebiotics and probiotics during extended fasting? [03:07]

2. I’m going to Europe for a few weeks - Italy and France - and want to buy a CGM machine which I know you can get at most pharmacies. Is there a specific brand or type of machine that you recommend? [05:39]

3. Are there any other tests that can be beneficial for women? I’ve been having a lot of problems with my hormones (specifically a low level of testosterone) and I’m tired of going to doctors who seem to do tests and tell me things are, “OK,” without cross referencing hormone levels or taking other tests into consideration. I’m at the point where I want to become my own “doctor” as far as monitoring my glucose and hormone levels. [15:57]

4. Should you fat fast or do extended fasting before holiday events? [23:15]

24:45

Episode #53

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. Last year I had a hysterectomy, but kept my ovaries. At the time, I was in peri-menopause. How will this impact fasting and should I do anything differently? [02:27]

2. Do vitamins or pain-relief tablets break a fast? [08:44]

3. If female hormones are so important for women and help us maintain weight during reproductive age, what do you think about the impact of birth control pills on metabolism? [13:41]

4. We often travel for an extended amount of time to 4000m. I am not sure if fasting 48-72 hrs would put too much stress on the body since high altitude is a big change for the body anyway? [20:58]

Fasting Q&A: Blood Ketones, Weight-Loss Protocol, Not Losing Weight, and Mood Issues
37:41

Episode #34

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I'd like to fast primarily for therapeutic reasons (mental health and autophagy especially) and aim to do three 42s. My issue is raging ketones! How high is too high when it comes to BK and at what point should I break a fast for this reason? [01:18]

2. What is the best protocol for weight loss? [11:58]

3. I am a TOFI and a pre-diabetic. What fasting can I do to reverse my T2D without losing weight? I noticed when I do extended fasting of 42 hours I lose too much weight. [21:18]

4. The one issue that I'm having the hardest time with is my mood during an extended fast (longer than 24 hours). I feel extremely irritable, agitated, quick tempered, & anxious, which is not how I normally am. I don't know if it's my cortisol levels, or what. Is this common? [31:08]

  • she is now active enough to keep up with her 2-year-old grandson

Fasting Q&A: Chia Seeds, ADF for Weight Loss, Gut Flora, and Stress Hormones
39:51

Episode #32

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I know you have mentioned chia seeds (in water) as a way to gently break your fast, but can I use chia seeds as a training wheel during a fast because they give a feeling of fullness? [07:25]

2. I do 18:6 daily and a 48 each week. It took much effort to get my gut health stabilised. I have completed a couple of 5-day fasts in the past, but now I am worried about what a 5-day fast does to the good guys in my gut. With no fibre coming in, how do they survive? I don’t want to compromise my good gut flora, but I’d like the benefits of autophagy and stem cell generation. [13:44]

3. I’ve been ADF’ing for 6 weeks. I typically fast 36hrs, only consuming plain water, salt, and 2-3 cups of black coffee. I am 46 and have had seven pregnancies. I have hardly lost any weight, only a couple pounds. What am I doing wrong? On my eating days, I eat 3 meals over 12hrs, lower carb but not keto, and add 2 Ts cream to my coffee those mornings. I mostly do not snack. I find it very hard to fast 42hrs. Would three 42-hr fasts be more effective than ADF with 36hr fasts? Does it take a while for results when peri-menopausal? [18:42]

4. As someone “recovering” from PTSD, I have been taught skills and tricks to reduce cortisol and adrenaline. From a recent podcast I learnt that fasting increases these and I am now concerned that it may create effects counter to what I am trying to achieve to reduce PTSD symptoms. Have you had patients with a similar concern? Is there perhaps a difference in duration, or other helpful hormones released at the same time, to differentiate it from the perpetually elevated stress hormones after PTSD? [28:21]

Fasting Q&A: Night Shifts, Coffee and Cream, Fat Fasting, and Markers of Insulin Resistance
33:11

Episode #30

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I am a nurse, and I work night shift (7pm-7am). I usually follow a 20/4 IF eating schedule on my days off, but I’m struggling to figure out how to fast on my night shift schedule when I work 2-3 nights in a row. Do you have any suggestions for fasting and a night shift schedule? [01:06]

2. Does coffee with heavy whipping cream break a fast? [08:38]

3. What and how do you eat when doing a "fat fast”? Do you still recommend following TRE? [15:51]

4. Most doctors will order fasting glucose and insulin, cortisol, and A1C to check for insulin resistance. Are there other markers (laboratory or clinical) to know if your IR is improving after, say, a year of fasting? [24:29]

Fasting Q&A: eTRE, Weight-Loss Plateaus, Fasting and Menstrual Cycles, Dawn Phenomenon
26:37

Episode #27

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I’ve heard Dr. Fung say to skip breakfast, but recently in one of Dr. Nadia’s groups, I heard her recommend early time-restricted eating. Could you clarify this for me? [00:47]

2. This coming February I will have been fasting for two years. I fast 18 hours a day and exercise almost daily. I have hit the world's biggest plateau the last 6 months and just cannot lose any more inches/fat/weight. I'm definitely becoming more toned, but I'm not really getting smaller. I'm wondering if I'm at my body's resting weight or if I need to shake things up with my eating? I eat very balanced meals with protein, carbs and veggies. I could probably stand to NOT eat a cookie here or there. Since listening to your podcast, I have been sprinkling in one 24-hour fast a week and this week I am aiming for two 24-hour fasts. [08:26]

3.  I've been fasting for a couple of months. I have read a lot about the fasting cycle with the menstrual cycle and I have heard you say it's easier to do longer fasts in the first week of the menstrual cycle. That's actually what I'm doing - three 36 or 42-hour fasts in my first week. The rest of my cycle I do 18-hour fasts and only 12-hour fasts in my 4th week. With that «protocol» I have lost 20 pounds in 3 months, but should I limit those longer fast to the first week of my cycle? [14:13]

4. How much does gluconeogenesis/the dawn phenomenon impact blood sugars early in the morning? A family member who is fasting and is type 2 diabetic has blood sugars of 150 or so at 6am but 95 later in the morning during a fast. I suspect the dawn phenomenon but I have no idea how much it could impact someone’s blood sugars. [20:20]

Fasting Q&A: Calorie Deficit, Vegan Keto, Acronyms, Cooking Oils
28:34

Episode #26

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. Does fasting for fat loss still require a caloric deficit? [01:08]

2. I've had success eating keto (traditional) with IF, and I've had success with a vegan diet (not keto) until I started relying too much on carbs like beans, rice, and potatoes. Do you think a vegan keto diet is a realistic way to eat while incorporating IF? [09:01]

3. I’ve heard a few acronyms that I don’t recognize: PCOS, CGM and IBS (although IBS is more common and not specific to fasting). For those used to fasting and the TFM Community discussions, these are common terms. However, I believe that those not versed would be left wondering about them and possibly looking them up. I know I had to look up PCOS when I first heard it. [13:56]

4. I’m confused about which cooking oils are inflammatory and why. Can you please address this? [20:48]

Fasting Q&A: Maintenance, Metformin, Optimizing Fasting Days, Weight Gain While Fasting
29:01

Episode #25

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I have been fasting on and off for years and had moments of great weight-loss success, but it seems like as soon as I stop I put the weight back on, regardless of how well I'm eating. Am I just fated to have to continue fasting forever to keep my weight down? [00:40]

2. My doctor wants me to start taking metformin, but I would like to incorporate fasting to bring down my A1C which is currently 7.1%. What are the benefits (if any) of using metformin for someone who is just starting on their fasting journey? Can you even take metformin on fasting days? [06:24]

3. Every fast is different. Why is that? I have been experiencing

euphoria and loads of energy while fasting, and fasting has been

wonderful. I have also been down, tired, and with no energy while

fasting. I'm thinking that the answer could have something to do with

water and electrolytes. What can I do to optimize the fast

and feel euphoric more often? [16:10]

4. Have you ever had someone gain weight while fasting? Are there common mistakes that people make if this is the case? [22:01]

Fasting Q&A: Coffee and Tea, Menstrual Cycle, TRE, and Resistance Training
36:20

Episode #23

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. You say not to nurse coffee that contains cream.  Is it OK to nurse a cup of black coffee or hot tea (without caffeine in it) during your  fast? [02:20]

2. During the week before menstruation should I not fast at all? I would love a guide that gives a general idea of what types of fasting are recommended related to where a woman is in her cycle, keeping hormones in mind? [10:47]

3. I decided to do time-restricted eating for life and it's working for me, but I don't understand why it's working for me? [20:03]

4. Is resistance training in a fasted state, specifically longer fasts of 72 hours, a waste of time when there’s no intake of protein before and after sessions to trigger muscle protein synthesis? [27:55]

Fasting Q&A: Post-Menopausal Bleeding, Loose Stools After Breaking Fasts, No Gallbladder and Keto, Hashimoto’s and Fasting
25:57

Episode #20

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I’ve been in menopause for over two and a half years and doing IF for the past year. I have done a couple of extended fasts. I belong to a women’s fasting group on Facebook and have read that a couple of women in menopause have started menstruating again and, weirdly enough, that just happened to me. Is this because of IF and have you seen this happen? Please tell me it does not mean I have a chance of getting pregnant! [01:22]

2. I get diarrhea about an hour after eating on OMAD. I have tried to eat a small amount and wait for a half hour, or longer, before eating again. I try to chew thoroughly and slowly, but nothing seems to help. [04:57]

3. Is keto and a higher fat intake (even though its healthy fats) without a gallbladder harder on my pancreas to process fats or should I maybe try a Mediterranean diet and fasting. I have a lot of weight to lose. [09:53]

4. Does fasting do more harm than good for people with Hashimoto's? [17:26]

Expert Guest: Dr. Jason Fung
44:44

Episode #19

In today's episode, Megan and Nadia FINALLY interview the co-founder of The Fasting Method Program, Dr. Jason Fung.

Dr. Fung talks about the benefits of health coaching and highlights the connection between diet and emotions. Hear Jason's take on how our habits have changed over the last few decades, influenced by external factors and how this "new environment sets us up to fail” and not that our "will-power" is now weaker. Learn from Dr. Fung how "obesity spreads like a virus" and how community is so much more important than even diet and fasting for success: "Trying to do it yourself is impossible" ..."it takes a village".

Jason, Megan and Nadia talk about the TFM community and the power of peer support vs. the "top-down" medical approach and why the Community members have been so successful in maintaining their healing and weight loss over the years.

Fasting Q&A: Insulin Levels, Erectile Dysfunction, Working Out Fasted, and Peri-Menopause
44:07

Episode #18

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. When you refer to lowering insulin level, is that the same as lowering blood sugar level? If it is not the same, how do we know our insulin level is lowering? [08:36]

2. Do you know if intermittent fasting plays a role in improving endothelial function? More specifically, helping with erectile dysfunction? [16:29]

3. I was just wondering what were your thoughts on working out during a fast? I have read other sources stating that working out after hour 16 (when fat burning is ramping up) would help to burn more fat? [22:32]

4. Would three 42-hour fasts be more effective than ADF with 36-hour fasts? Does it take a while for results if in peri-menopausal? [34:06]

Fasting Q&A: Coffee Creamers, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding, Mental Health, and Sweeteners
29:27
Episode #10

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. Is unsweetened almond/coconut creamer in coffee enough to break a fast or interfere with fat-burning mode during a 36 to 42 hour fast? Or does it depend on the amount used? [00:58]

2. Hi guys! I’m so happy about your new podcast I’m a big fan of your program! I was wondering if you have more information about fasting for nursing moms or even pregnancy. Is it safe? Would it effect milk production? [03:46]

3. What are the benefits seen with fasting and mental health? I feel mentally well when I’m fasting compared to eating frequently and poorly. What science can I tell myself regarding this topic? [07:19]

4. What do you think about chewing xylitol gum to improve fasting breath? Does xylitol trigger insulin? Please rank honey, maple syrup and xylitol for use during my 10-6 eating window days. [14:40]

Fasting Q&A: Flavored Coffee, Feeling Cold, Menstruation, and Switching Up Your Fasts
45:42

Episode #9

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. I find that drinking black regular/unflavoured coffee is hard (on my stomach as well as well as on my stamina!!!) but I find it easier to drink black flavored coffee so that I don't have to add milk to it which would be my preference. By flavored, I mean the beans are flavoured (the company says that even their flavored coffees have only 5 calories in a cup of coffee). I do not add flavored syrups. Is it OK to drink flavored coffee or does it break my fast? [01:36]

2. Fasting during menstrual cycle? [22:45]

3. Feeling so cold during a fast that it stops you continuing. [14:18]

4. Since I’m not losing weight on the 16:8 fasts after two months, I want to start 24 hours of fasting. What will happen in, let’s say a year, when I hopefully lose weight and get off some meds and go back to just 16:8. Will I regain the weight and will 24 hours of fasting be a lifetime thing?  [33:49]

Fasting Q&A: Ending an Extended Fast, OMAD, Keto and Low-Carb, and More
33:27

Episode #005

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. When should you end an extended fast? [00:30]

2. I am starting a 30:16 cycle and hope to move onto a 3x42. I have about 10 pounds more to lose. I feel very satisfied with one meal a day and 800 calories, but I am concerned that I might damage my metabolism if I go very long on OMAD (one meal a day). Is that something that is OK or should I make sure I get more calories 3 or 4 days a week? [09:08]

3. When doing one-meal-a-day, how much should you eat and/or how long should you eat? [17:50]

4. When it is said, “Intermittent fasting is not about diet,” why are we told to do keto or low-carbohydrate diets? [24:56]

Introducing The Fasting Method Podcast
29:13

In today's episode, we share our journey from illness to being able to help the people we work with lose weight and reverse the chronic and "incurable" type 2 diabetes.

Truth be told, we started this podcast because there is so much misinformation out there about intermittent fasting. Today our team at The Fasting Method has worked with over 16,000 adults worldwide helping them achieve sustainable weight loss and improve blood glucose levels through various fasting strategies and real, whole-food nutrition principles. We believe we have a responsibility to bust these fasting myths and set the record straight.

And we're not just practioners of fasting; it's saved our lives. We've struggled with obesity, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and fatty liver disease. We were able to take the lessons we learned throughout our own journeys and apply them, first to our clincial practice and then to our online community, and now we want to bring them to you in this podcast.
