Episode Date
Finding Purpose with Heather MacFadyen
00:35:06

We have all struggled at some point to understand God’s will and purpose for our lives. And in different seasons, we may also feel like we are missing out, forgotten or doing less important work than what He has for us. That simply isn’t true!

God’s will is at work all the time and He invites us to join Him. We miss out on His will when we don’t accept those invitations. He gives us assignments in life that fulfill His will in our life and in our world.

God is inviting you to fulfill His purpose for your life in the assignments He is placing around you. You are not too young, too old, too late, and you don’t need to do it perfectly. You are right where you are supposed to be.

If you are in the middle of God’s will, you are never missing out, forgotten, or doing work that is less than. Be faithful with the assignments He gives you because you never know where they will lead you.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss:

  • Discovering they were in a magazine together in 1992 and how being faithful to writing brought Heather to where she is today
  • Moments they felt like they missed out on opportunities as they shifted focus from raising careers to raising their children
  • The fear of missing out, feeling forgotten and less important
  • Understanding and finding God’s purpose in the various assignments He calls you to throughout your life
  • What motherhood taught Candace about God’s will and purpose for her life

Do you ever feel like you are trying to figure everything out and don’t even know where to start? We have something special just for you this season. We want to help you discover how your gifts, talents, and experiences can equip you to face whatever season of life you are in. Download our FREE guide that will help you discover right where you belong.

This is what it means to be the Body of Christ
00:29:57

Picture this: you are at a symphony and the musicians begin playing. But something sounds off, and you quickly realize that everyone is playing the same instrument and following the same note pattern. That wouldn’t be the most beautiful piece of music you listen to, right? Because what makes a symphony so beautiful is all the different instruments playing together using different melodies, harmonies, and notes that create a song.

The same can be said about the body of Christ. We are all part of the body of Christ; but if we all had the same gifts, talents, and skills we would be a robot instead of a body. Within the body of Christ we are all called to one mission: be like Jesus.

What does it mean to “be like Jesus?” Jesus said that we demonstrate Him to the world by loving people like He loves people. And the way He loved people was scandalous. It was counter cultural. He loved everyone as they were; including the people who were different from Him, enemies to the land He walked, and even the outcasts.

He calls us to be a bridge builder to everyone; including those who are different from us. The best part is that there is always something we can learn from someone who doesn’t see the same way we do. It shouldn’t stop us from loving them well.

This conversation wraps up Season 1 with Candace and Tara-Leigh Cobble, but there is a BONUS episode available for those who purchase a ticket to the live event on February 16 (whether in person or via livestream). You can still grab a ticket and get the bonus episode!

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Tara-Leigh’s favorite site in Israel (it’s not what you would expect!).
  • What it means to be like Jesus and how we can be more like Him by loving others well.
  • Moments in scripture where Jesus loved others in ways that were counter cultural.
  • Being a Christian and what keeps them coming back, despite experiencing wounds from others.

Scripture Memory of the Season:

1 John 5:1-6 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. And His commands are not a burden, because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. Who is the one who conquers the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? Jesus Christ--he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water and by blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

We are created to become like Jesus
00:30:20

We are created in the image of God. We are recreated through the Holy Spirit at work within us to become more like Jesus. Simply put, we are born again; we are transformed. Our desire to be more like Jesus can only come from God because we cannot change our heart, only He can.

God uses His Word, the Spirit, and those around us to reveal more of who He is to us, so that we can become more like Jesus. Are there people in your life God uses to show you who He is? Maybe it’s a friend who, while walking through a really hard season, exudes unexplainable joy. Or maybe it’s through a conversation with someone at the grocery, who displays kindness toward you.

Tara-Leigh and Candace hope that through this episode you continue to hunger after a relationship with God AND that He drops people in your life that reveal more of who He is to you. May He bring Debbie’s into your garage door to bring your cookies (you have to listen to understand!).

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Being born again is not a weird thing, it is a spiritual transformation that God does within us so we can be more like Jesus.
  • How the Word, the Spirit, and people in our life work to show us more of who God is.
  • People in their lives who showed them more of who God is, and how it has shaped their faith.

Prayer is a mystery
00:40:16

Have you prayed for something and God said no? We all have (if we are honest). We have all prayed for something or someone, and the outcome is not what we wanted or expected. The truth is, if when we come to God with our prayers and expect Him to work the outcome in the way we want, we treat God like He is a vending machine. Prayer isn’t transactional, it is relational. It isn’t about getting what we want, it’s about getting God.

Sometimes we get a no, that is true. But that does not mean that God is displeased with you. His no is often the kindest possible answer He can give to you. Throughout the Bible, we see God say no to heroes of the faith; David, Paul, and even Jesus. But look at how God not only blessed them, but used them. So if you get a no from God, you are in good company.

Join Candace and Tara-Leigh as they share vulnerable moments about their life through this conversation around prayer and hearing no from God.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • The difference between a transactional prayer and a relational prayer.
  • When Jesus got a no from the Father and how important that moment is to understand when it comes to your prayer life and relationship with Him.
  • How no is often God’s kindest possible answer, and often the answer we are grateful for in hindsight.
  • What the landscape of Candace’s prayers look like.
  • The moment that Candace recognized divorce was a no from God (through an honest conversation with her kids).

Scripture Memory of the Season:

1 John 5:1-5 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Prayer is about God communicating with us
00:26:13

Prayer is a conversation with God that He desires to have with us. He is never too busy for us, never bothered by our requests or prayers, and certainly is not bored when we talk to Him. When we pray, God is always there, always listening, and always receiving.

Prayer is a place where all 3 persons of The Trinity are at work. When we pray, we are talking to the Father, through Jesus (because of the connection He made possible for us), and the Holy Spirit is empowering us in and through prayer.

Two common questions people ask when it comes to prayer are:

  1. How do I pray?
  2. Why do I need to pray to God when He knows everything?

In today’s episode, Candace and Tara-Leigh dig into those two questions, and more. If you don’t know how to pray or feel like you aren’t good at praying, or you feel like you don’t understand why prayer matters – take a breath and rest easy. Let’s go on this journey together!

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Prayer as a conversation with the Trinity and how that perspective of prayer will challenge the way we pray.
  • How prayer can be taught or developed; it is a skill Jesus taught His disciples and can teach us too.
  • What “in Jesus name, Amen” actually means and the power it carries when we pray.
  • Moments in their lives where they have seen their prayers answered (in ways they desired and in ways they did not expect).
  • Tips for listening and meditating in silence with God; it may be difficult but it is  powerful.

The Spirit of God changes how we live
00:32:18

God’s never going to give you more than you can handle” – it is really easy to look at punchy one-liners like this one on social media and take them as the whole truth. But do you measure them against God’s word before you take them as the whole truth? The Spirit calls us to use The Word as a measuring stick for truth. He is our guide and gives us wisdom as we walk through life.

The Spirit is meant to bring clarity to us and teach us. All throughout scripture, the Spirit clarifies who Jesus is and points back to the truth (the Son and the Father) teaching us how to be more like Him.

Colossians 3 says to put on attributes like kindness, compassion, patience, gentleness, and more). It is not easy to do everyday, but it is a choice we make everyday day. And if we practice it enough it becomes a habit. By surrendering to the Spirit’s work in us, He will enable us to walk in those attributes, lean into His wisdom, and walk in His Spirit.

The Spirit produces the fruit in us but that takes time. The more time you spend with the Spirit, the more you are nourished and grow. When we get frustrated that we don’t feel we are growing it is easy to be discouraged and bow out. But God is still at work within you. Don’t lose hope. He is developing the fruit in you. Be patient with yourself; He is patient with you.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • The importance of measuring everything against the Word of God.
  • How we are unified as the body of Christ because of The Spirit.
  • Learning from others with different opinions is healthy for you and your faith.
  • Why kindness is so important to Candace and the story behind her book “Kind Is The New Classy”
  • The Fruit of the Spirit – and how it is ONE fruit with 9 attributes, not 9 different fruits.
  • The difference between a transactional and relational partnership with the Spirit.

Scripture Memory of the Season:

1 John 5:1-4 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. The Spirit of God is always with us
00:36:21

Who is the Holy Spirit? This is such a common question that is asked when it comes to fully understanding The Trinity. The Holy Spirit is the most mysterious (and sometimes confusing) within the triad. Before Jesus went back to Heaven, He said “I am sending the Spirit who is better than me.” Better than Jesus? That doesn’t sound right. But it is. The Holy Spirit is not a force or power used by God. He is a person who has responsibilities and characteristics that help guide us through life. And Jesus knew we needed Him.

Candace and Tara-Leigh sit down and dive into the mystery of The Holy Spirit in hopes of helping us understand who He is and how He works in us. They also share personal stories from their faith journey; and Candace talks about the time her husband baptized her in the ocean (grab your tissues! It’s a beautiful story).

As you listen to this conversation, we hope you are inspired to take your relationship with God deeper through The Holy Spirit. Did you know you can read your Bible in ONE year just by reading for 12 minutes a day? That makes studying God’s word more, seem possible.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Building good habits (especially with reading and studying your Bible).
  • The moment Candace began to understand and desire to read the Bible.
  • Who The Holy Spirit is and how He fits into The Trinity.
  • Baptism; what it is and why it is important to your walk with Jesus.

The Son of God shows what God is like
00:37:08

Candace is BACK with Tara-Leigh Cobble to continue their conversation on the connection between God and Jesus (pssst … He is still the same person) Think about this: if Jesus were not God, but was just a man, how would that change the way you live? You likely may stop seeing Jesus as Divine and see as a man who was a bit crazy at times; as a man who ran around claiming to be God, the fulfillment of the Old Testament. And you likely would not place as much weight into what He says or how He guides you.

Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss that the idea that God of the Universe, who created everything, came to us in human form to save us. God desires a relationship with us and he wants us to flourish in life. He sent His son so that we could flourish. Everything that Jesus teaches us is for our joy, our thriving, and our flourishing. And when we live life knowing HIs love for us and how much He cares for us, that will pour out onto those around us.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Why the birth of Jesus is just as important as the death of Jesus
  • The moments in the New Testament where Jesus revealed Himself and moments He did not, and why He chose to withhold who He was to certain groups.
  • A moment in Candace’s life where she had to push through her anger and lean into Christ-like humility.
  • What Dancing With The Stars taught Candace about how much God picks us up and guides us through hard seasons.

Scripture Memory of the Season:

1 John 5:1-3 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands.

The Son of God experienced life fully
00:30:07

Have you ever read through the Old Testament and thought, “Oh mylanta! I cannot wait for Jesus to show up. These stories are hard to read.”

What if we told you that Jesus was just as present in those stories as He was in the miracles of the New Testament? Many people (including Christians) believe that Jesus didn’t arrive on the scene until His recorded birth in the gospels. But that simply isn’t true. Jesus has always existed, He wasn’t created by God. He played an integral role in Creation and was present through every moment of history.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Which translations of the Bible are most accurate to the original text.
  • Understanding how Jesus is God which means Jesus always existed and was not created by God.
  • Their bucket list; what they have done and what they still wish to do in life.

Scripture Memory of the Season: 1 John 5:1-3 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands.

God is a Good Father
00:31:43

God is a GOOD Father who is never disappointed in you *gasp*

He is grieved by our sins, but never disappointed. Because to be disappointed He has to be let down by an unmet expectation, and He has no expectations of us. When we sin, God does not run from us, He runs to us and dwells with us. The whole point of the Bible is God’s love story to us and His goodness + kindness are reflected all throughout it. And He funnels who He is through The Trinity.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • The fear of God and how it consists of delight and awe – it draws us to Him, not from Him.
  • Why it is important to draw closer to God in seasons of trial AND abundance.
  • How God's kindness and attention to detail reflects just how GOOD of a Father He is.

Scripture Memory of the Season: 1 John 5:1-2 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands.

GOOD is God’s character
00:26:49

God is both Creator and Father – this speaks to how relational He is; we aren’t just His creations. We are His children. He was Father before He was Creator. Do you see Him as your Father? You can know about God the Father intellectually, but struggle to receive it depending on your perspective and experience with earthly fathers. God wants to Father you in the way that you should be (and desire to be) fathered.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • The distinction between God the Creator and God the Father.
  • God’s “no” to something in your life is actually God’s kindest, most protective answer for your life.
  • How the Trinity carries unified will and character, even in their individual personas.

Scripture Memory of the Season: 1 John 5:1-2 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children; when we love God and obey His commands.

God Is Love
00:41:30

We were created out of the overflow of God’s love – That is a powerful reality that we often don’t fully comprehend. In today’s conversation, Candace and Tara-Leigh dive deep into the love of God; to understand His love we must understand the Trinity. He is always who He has been and He always will be. We are just learning more and more about that every day.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • How the “God of love” and “love is God” are very different.
  • Becoming more like God is as simple as spending time with Him.
  • Rolling your gratitude up and pointing back to Jesus in your everyday life.

Scripture Memory of the Season: 1 John 5:1 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him.

The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast with Tara-Leigh Cobble
00:36:01

When you read scripture, are you searching for God or are you looking for yourself? Because the lens through which we read scripture is a game changer to our faith journey. God wants to be known and revealed, and that is what He does throughout scripture as we see The Trinity described. This may be complex to grasp, but Candace Cameron Bure and her guest host Tara-Leigh Cobble want to walk you through understanding it as you grow in your faith.

In this episode, you will hear Candace and Tara-Leigh discuss:

  • Where faith began for them, and how it has evolved over the years.
  • The importance of reading through the Bible looking for God, not for yourself.
  • The difference between joy and happiness, and how God is adjacent to joy all throughout scripture.
  • God as Triune; Father, Son, and Spirit

Scripture Memory for this episode:

1 John 5:1 (CSB) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him.
