Ingrid Mattson: A Trailblazer in Islamic Scholarship and Interfaith Dialogue Dr. Ingrid Mattson is a prominent scholar, author, and community leader, recognized for her significant contributions to Islamic scholarship and interfaith dialogue. Born in Canada, she embraced Islam in 1987 and has since dedicated her career to fostering a deeper understanding of Islam and promoting mutual respect among different faith communities. Dr. Mattson holds a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago, where her research focused on Islamic law and society. She has a profound interest in the role of women in Islam, interfaith relations, and the spiritual and ethical teachings of the Quran. Her academic work is highly respected and widely published, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of Islamic theology and practice. In 2001, Dr. Mattson made history as the first woman to serve as Vice President and then President of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), one of the largest Muslim organizations in North America. Her leadership at ISNA was marked by her efforts to enhance the organization’s engagement with interfaith initiatives and social justice issues, reflecting her commitment to building bridges between different communities. Dr. Mattson is also the founder and Director of the Islamic Chaplaincy Program at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, the first accredited Muslim chaplaincy program in the United States. Through this program, she has trained numerous Muslim chaplains who now serve in various institutions, including universities, hospitals, and the military. Her work in chaplaincy underscores her dedication to providing pastoral care and spiritual support to the Muslim community.
