In a world where the Sun has vanished, Earth flickers dimly under the glow of ancient vulcanism. The remnants of humanity have found refuge in the colossal Last Redoubt, an eight-mile-high metal pyramid, besieged by mysterious forces lurking in the shadows. A protective Circle of Energy, known as the air clog, shields them, powered by the enigmatic Earth Current beneath their feet. For eons, colossal beings called the Watchers have awaited their moment, biding their time in the darkness. Beyond the Circle, other remnants of life‚some alien, some perhaps once human‚linger, and leaving the sanctuary means facing almost certain death, or the obliteration of the soul. As the tale unfolds, the narrator connects telepathically with a denizen of the forgotten Lesser Redoubt, triggering a desperate expedition to save them from their dwindling Earth Current, only to be met with disaster. Undeterred, the narrator ventures alone into the abyss, driven by the hope of finding the girl he has reached out to, who he believes is the reincarnation of his lost love. H. P. Lovecraft hailed this work as one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written, while Clark Ashton Smith praised it as an unparalleled feat of sheer creativity.
