The Tragedy of King Lear is a powerful and poignant drama penned by William Shakespeare. At its heart, the story follows King Lear as he spirals into madness after making the fateful decision to divide his kingdom among two of his three daughters, swayed by their flattering words. This ill-fated choice leads to devastating consequences for himself and those around him. Drawing from the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological Celtic king, this timeless tale has seen countless adaptations on stage and screen, with the role of Lear coveted by many of the finest actors throughout history. Written between 1603 and 1606, the play was revised and published in various forms, with the more theatrical version appearing in the 1623 First Folio. Over the years, revisions have been made to soften its dark themes for audiences, yet since the 19th century, Shakespeares original version has been celebrated as one of his greatest masterpieces. The tragedy delves deep into the complexities of human suffering and the bonds of family, with George Bernard Shaw famously stating, No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear.
