Description

The Lusiads (Os Lusíadas) is a remarkable epic poem penned in the 16th century by the esteemed Luis Vaz de Camões. This captivating work narrates the epic saga of the Portuguese discoveries during the 15th and 16th centuries, with a special focus on Vasco da Gamas historic voyage to India. Drawing inspiration from the classic epic tradition, Camões masterpiece is not only recognized as the first significant literary work in Modern Portuguese but also celebrated as a national epic on par with Vergils Aeneid. In the 19th century, Sir Richard Francis Burton translated the Lusiads, deeming it the most pleasing literary labour of his life. (Summary by Leni)
