Great, honest & relatable advise on financial issues that affect life in the long & short term. You don't need $2 million saved in retirement for the suggestion to still help you. I've listened since she appeared on CNET's @the404 podcast.

Trillions: How a Band of Renegades Invented the Index Fund Part Two
1126
Fifty years ago, the Manhattan Project of money management was quietly assembled in the financial industry's backwaters, unified by the heretical idea that even many of the world's finest investors couldn't beat the market in the long run. The motley crew of nerds, including economist wunderkind Gene Fama, humiliated industry executive Jack Bogle, bull-headed and computer-obsessive John McQuown, and avuncular former WWII submariner Nate Most, succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.  Passive investing now accounts for more than $20 trillion, equal to the entire gross domestic product of the US, and is today a force reshaping markets, finance and even capitalism itself in myriad subtle but pivotal ways. Yet even some fans of index funds and ETFs are growing perturbed that their swelling heft is destabilizing markets, wrecking the investment industry and leading to an unwelcome concentration of power in fewer and fewer hands. In Trillions, Financial Times journalist Robin Wigglesworth unveils the vivid secret history of an invention Wall Street wishes was never created, bringing to life the characters behind its birth, growth, and evolution into a world-conquering phenomenon.  Have a money question? The Practice of Groundedness Part Two
1144
Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the high of occasional wins can keep you going for a while, playing into the always-on, never enough hustle culture ultimately takes a serious toll. In The Practice of Groundedness, author Brad Stulberg shares a healthier, more sustainable model for success. At the heart of this model is groundedness, a practice that values presence over rote productivity, accepts that progress is nonlinear, and prioritizes long-term values and fulfillment over short-term gain.  To be grounded is to possess a firm and unwavering foundation, a resolute sense of self from which deep and enduring, not shallow and superficial, success can be found. Groundedness does not eliminate ambition and striving; rather, it situates these qualities and channels them in more meaningful ways. Have a money question? Machiavelli for Women Part Two
835
This weekend we welcome Stacey Vanek Smith, NPR host of The Indicator and correspondent for Planet Money, who joined us to discuss her recently released book, Machiavelli for Women: Defend Your Worth, Grow Your Ambition, and Win the Workplace. Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance.  But despite all of this, the payoff is, quite literally. not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining. So why, in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, is the glass ceiling still holding strong? And how can we shatter it for once and for all? Stacy Vanek Smith’s advice: ask Machiavelli “with this delicious look at what we have to gain by examining our relationship to power.” Have a money question? Remembering 9/11 Part Two
848
Twenty years after Sept. 11, we're giving you a break from the money talk, and instead re-airing an interview we did back in 2017 with retired Admiral William “Bill” McRaven. If Bill’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he presided over the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that resulted in the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Bill was the man who identified the body when it was flown back to Afghanistan and told President Obama that the U.S. finally had their guy. A few years later in 2014, the four-star admiral and 37-year Navy SEAL veteran delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em Horns!). Little did McRaven know that his address, which spoke to how students could overcome challenges and change themselves, would become a viral hit with more than 10 million views online. In January, 2015 Bill became the Chancellor of the entire University of Texas system (retired 2018) and was encouraged to expand his commencement speech into a book, Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World. Making College Pay Part Two
1379
The cost of college makes for frightening headlines. The outstanding balance of student loans is more than $1.5 trillion nationally, while tuition continues to rise. And on the heels of a pandemic that nearly dismantled the traditional college experience, we have to wonder: Is college really worth it? To help answer that question, we're joined this weekend by economist Beth Akers, whose recent book, Making College Pay: An Economist Explains How to Make a Smart Bet on Higher Education, shows how to improve your odds by making smart choices about where to enroll, what to study, and how to pay for it It’s true that college is expensive, but once we see higher education for what it is, an investment in future opportunities, job security, and earnings, a different picture emerges: The average college graduate earns an additional million dollars over their career (compared to those who stopped their education after high school), and on average, two- and four-year schools deliver a 15 percent return on investment, double that of the stock market. Yet these outcomes are not guaranteed. Rather, they hinge upon where and how you opt to invest your tuition dollars.  Simply put, the real problem with college isn’t the cost, it’s the risk that your investment might not pay off. The Premonition Part Two
673
Friend of the pod Michael Lewis is back with us this weekend to talk about his recently released book, The Premonition: A Pandemic Story. The characters you will meet are as fascinating as they are unexpected.  A thirteen-year-old girl’s science project on transmission of an airborne pathogen develops into a very grown-up model of disease control. A local public-health officer uses her worm’s-eye view to see what the CDC misses, and reveals great truths about American society. A secret team of dissenting doctors, nicknamed the Wolverines, has everything necessary to fight the pandemic: brilliant backgrounds, world-class labs, prior experience with the pandemic scares of bird flu and swine flu, everything, that is, except official permission to implement their work. Michael Lewis is not shy about calling these people heroes for their refusal to follow directives that they know to be based on misinformation and bad science.  Even the internet, as crucial as it is to their exchange of ideas, poses a risk to them. They never know for sure who else might be listening in. Have a money question? Email us, ask jill [at] jill on money dot com. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less Part Two
852
We pile on “to-dos” but don’t consider “stop-doings”. We create incentives for good behavior, but don’t get rid of obstacles to it. We collect new-and-improved ideas, but don’t prune the outdated ones. Every day, across challenges big and small, we neglect a basic way to make things better: We don’t subtract. Leidy Klotz, our guest this weekend and author of the recently released book, Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, has plenty of research that shows why.  Whether we’re building Lego models or cities, grilled-cheese sandwiches or strategic plans, our minds tend to add before taking away. Even when we do think of it, subtraction can be harder to pull off because an array of biological, cultural, and economic forces push us toward more.  But we have a choice, our blind spot need not go on taking its toll on our cities, our institutions, and our minds. By diagnosing our neglect of subtraction, we can treat it. Have a money question? Email us, ask jill [at] jill on money dot com. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. State of the Economy Part Two
855
Believe it or not, we're basically halfway through 2021, which means it's time for a little "State of the Economy" with our favorite numbers cruncher and overall badass, Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.  The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) unanimously voted to keep short-term interest rates unchanged and the pace of asset purchases at $120 billion per month. The statement following the June meeting was much more upbeat about the progress of vaccinations and the economy. The bottom line is that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell tried to reassure the public and financial markets that the Fed will not allow inflation to get out of control. The Fed’s own forecast, or “dot plot” as it is called, showed a substantial move up in the timing of rate hikes. The problem for financial markets is that inflation and rate hikes are always unwelcome. Have a money question? Email us, ask jill [at] jill on money dot com. From Janitor to Top Executive Part Two
615
This weekend we're joined by Richard Montañez, whose upcoming book, Flamin' Hot: The Incredible True Story of One Man's Rise from Janitor to Top Executive, tells the story of a man who made a science out of walking through closed doors. Having taken a job mopping floors at Frito-Lay's California factory to support his family, Montañez took his future into his own hands and created the world’s hottest snack food: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. This bold move not only disrupted the food industry with some much-needed spice, but also shook up a corporate culture in which everyone stayed in their lane. Through creative thinking, community building, and a few powerful mindset shifts, he outsmarted the naysayers who tried to get in his way, proving that you can break out of your career rut and that your present circumstances don't have to dictate your future. How to Change with Katy Milkman Part Two
809
Award-winning Wharton Professor Katy Milkman has devoted her career to the study of behavior change, and this weekend she joins us to discuss her recently released book, How to Change: The Science of Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be. Change comes most readily when you understand what's standing between you and success and tailor your solution to that roadblock. If you want to work out more but find exercise difficult and boring, downloading a goal-setting app probably won't help. But what if, instead, you transformed your workouts so they became a source of pleasure instead of a chore? Turning an uphill battle into a downhill one is the key to success. Drawing on Milkman's original research and the work of her world-renowned scientific collaborators, How to Change shares strategic methods for identifying and overcoming common barriers to change, such as impulsivity, procrastination, and forgetfulness. Whether you're a manager, coach, or teacher aiming to help others change for the better or are struggling to kick-start change yourself, How to Change offers an invaluable, science-based blueprint for achieving your goals, once and for all. The Whiteness of Wealth Part Two
773
Our guest this weekend, Dorothy A. Brown, became a tax lawyer to get away from race. As a young black girl growing up in the South Bronx, she’d seen how racism limited the lives of her family and neighbors.  Her law school classes offered a refreshing contrast: Tax law was about numbers, and the only color that mattered was green. But when Brown sat down to prepare tax returns for her parents, she found something strange: James and Dottie Brown, a plumber and a nurse, seemed to be paying an unusually high percentage of their income in taxes. When Brown became a law professor, she set out to understand why. In her recently released book, The Whiteness of Wealth, Brown draws on decades of cross-disciplinary research to show that tax law isn’t as color-blind as she’d once believed.  She takes us into her adopted city of Atlanta, introducing us to families across the economic spectrum whose stories demonstrate how American tax law rewards the preferences and practices of white people while pushing black people further behind. From attending college to getting married to buying a home, black Americans find themselves at a financial disadvantage compared to their white peers. The results are an ever-increasing wealth gap and more black families shut out of the American dream. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. Dream First, Details Later Part Two
974
This weekend we're joined by Ellen Bennet, author of Dream First, Details Later: How to Quit Overthinking & Make It Happen! As a 24-year-old line cook, Ellen Marie Bennett couldn't stand the kitchen staff’s poorly designed, cheaply made aprons. So when her head chef announced he was ordering a new batch, she blurted out, “Chef, I have an apron company” even though she had no company, no business plan, just a glimmer of a design idea and a business license.  Through hustle and a willingness to leap into the unknown, time and time again, she built that first order into a multi-million-dollar company called Hedley & Bennett, making aprons and kitchen gear worn by many of the world’s best chefs and home cooks everywhere. Dream First, Details Later shares Ellen's journey and her forged-in-the-fire personal playbook for starting before you stop yourself. If you've ever imagined doing something and immediately thought, "that's impossible," or "I wouldn't even know where to start," or "I'm not qualified to do that," in these pages, you'll learn how to shove aside your inner worrier and launch into action.  This honest and bold illustrated book will be like having Ellen, your personal hype woman, there with you, all the while yelling, "Don't stop! You got this!" Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. "Jill on Money" theme music is by Joel Goodman, www.joelgoodman.com. BONUS: Small Business Bootcamp
1374
I am often asked about the best retirement plan options for entrepreneurs and sole proprietors. There's a lot of choices out there, and it's not always so easy to determine which plan makes the most sense, that's why on this episode we're glad to welcome back Michael Goodman for a little small business bootcamp! As the president of Wealthstream Advisors in New York City, Michael knows firsthand what it's like to run a small business. We'll touch on a variety of topics, including which retirement plan is the best choice for your situation. Among the options discussed: Individual Retirement Account (IRA): You can choose a traditional IRA, where you pay taxes in the future or a Roth, where you pay taxes today. Simplified Employee Pension (SEP-IRA): This is a good option for those who have up to 25 employees and want to offer a retirement benefit that is easy to operate. Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE IRA Plan): SIMPLE plans were aimed at slightly larger small business owners (usually up to 100 employees), who wanted to provide employees a way to save for retirement. Solo 401(k) plan: Alternatively referred to as an “individual 401(k)” or “uni-401(k),” this plan is geared to small business owners who have no employees (other than a spouse) and have the capacity to sock away a lot of dough. Spring Housing Market Part Two
769
I think it's officially time for a deep dive on the spring housing market. Joining us this weekend is Maria Fregosi, the Chief Investment Officer at Homepoint Financial. Where is the housing market going next? Despite the fact that we are coming to the end of the pandemic with accelerated vaccinations, many companies have announced that employees working from home may continue to do so permanently.  That may allow some to seek out more affordable areas like Austin, Charlotte, Miami, and Nashville.  Some smaller cities have launched cash initiatives, home buying allowances, tax credits and money toward local goods and services to induce pandemic movers to relocate there.  If you are in the market to buy, you will need to run the basic numbers, including mortgage principal and interest, homeowners' insurance, and taxes. Add a line item for upkeep and maintenance, depending on the age of the house and its condition, factor in 1-3 percent of the purchase price annually.  And for the transaction itself, don’t forget about closing costs, which averaged more than $6,000 last year. It’s easy to gloss over things like mortgage loan application and appraisal fees, the title search and insurance, as well as legal and recording fees, because they seem to be built into the legal process, but you should ask for discounts along the way to see if you can push them down. Finally, even if the numbers appear to work, consider whether buying could preclude you from addressing other important financial issues in your life, like paying down student loans or saving for retirement. Just because a lender will fork over the dough, doesn't mean you should take it. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. The Unspoken Rules Part Two

You've landed a job. Now what? To help answer that question, we're joined this weekend by Gorick Ng, author of The Unspoken Rules: Secrets to Starting Your Career Off Right. No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules, the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Bernie Madoff and The Wizard of Lies Part Two
1225
With the death of Bernie Madoff earlier this week, Mark and I decided to re-run an interview we did a few years back with Diana Henriques. Madoff is perhaps the most notorious name in the history of Wall Street.  By now we all know the story. Madoff conducted a Ponzi scheme that is considered to be the largest in U.S. history. Over the course of decades, Madoff stole billions of dollars from his clients and finally, amid the financial crisis of 2008, the crime came to a screeching halt. How on earth was he able to pull it off for so long, when there were plenty of warning signs and whistleblowers who tried to alert regulators that something was amiss? One of the journalists covering the scandal was Henriques, then a staff reporter at The New York Times, who specialized in investigative reporting on white-collar crime, market regulation and corporate governance. Diana used her countless hours of work as the lead reporter on the story as a catalyst to write the bestselling book, The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust. Diana had incredible access, including the first interview with an imprisoned Madoff. Robert De Niro was so drawn to the character of Bernie Madoff as Henriques depicted him, that he bought the film rights to “The Wizard of Lies" and it was turned into a film for HBO. If you’ve yet to see “The Wizard of Lies,” go watch it. DVR it, stream it, whatever the method, just watch it. It’s incredibly well done and stars Robert De Niro as Bernie Madoff and Michelle Pfeiffer as Ruth Madoff.  Have a money question? A World Without Email Part Two
891
This weekend I'm so excited to welcome back Cal Newport to the show, who joins us to talk about his latest book, A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload. Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are defined by a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digital conversations, a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody can disconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantive work. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but a thorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind" workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducing profitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth. Equally worrisome, it makes us miserable. Humans are simply not wired for constant digital communication. We have become so used to an inbox-driven workday that it's hard to imagine alternatives. But they do exist. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. "Jill on Money" theme music is by Joel Goodman, www.joelgoodman.com. The Data Detective with Tim Harford Part Two
1123
Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us.  Our guest this weekend, Tim Harford, says that's a mistake.  In his latest book, The Data Detective, Harford says we shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics, we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us.”  If we can toss aside our fears and learn to approach them clearly, understanding how our own preconceptions lead us astray, statistics can point to ways we can live better and work smarter. Tax Season and the Recovery Rebate Credit
1252
As tax season continues, this weekend we're bringing you one more episode sponsored by H&R Block. Stimulus payments have been a critical lifeline for many Americans during the coronavirus crisis. But what if you didn’t receive the full amount due to life changes such as a new baby or lower income? Thankfully there’s a way to solve this, in the form of a recovery rebate credit. The recovery rebate and your stimulus payments are actually one in the same. It’s just that the recovery rebate credit is paid as part of filing your return. Joining us this weekend to help make sense of it all is Kathy Pickering, the chief tax officer at H&R Block. As you're getting ready to file your taxes, remember that H&R Block has all your tax needs covered. Their experts have an average of 10 years’ experience. It seems every few years or so we're due for a bit of bitcoin bootcamp! So this weekend we're joined once again by Dan Roberts, senior writer at Yahoo Finance and a total crypto geek who has been covering the wild ride from the beginning.   Bitcoin (BTC) started 2020 at $7,200. It ended the year at nearly $30,000, up 296%. The surge continued full-steam into 2021. It took bitcoin 10 years in existence to reach $20,000 on most exchanges, on Dec. 15.  Then it took just 17 days to reach $30,000.Bitcoin broke through $30,000 for the first time on Jan. 2, then climbed to $32,000 just hours later. On Jan. 5, it broke $35,000, and on Jan. 7, it hit $40,000. Now it's regularly hitting $50,000. Crazy, right? Side Hustle School with Chris Guillebeau
1225
No time like the present to start thinking about that side hustle you've always dreamed about. If a global pandemic doesn't get you motivated, I'm not sure what will. And if you are raking in some extra cash on the side, there will be tax consequences! That's why we're happy to bring you another episode that's sponsored by H&R Block. As you're getting ready to file your taxes, remember that H&R Block has all your tax needs covered. Their experts have an average of 10 years’ experience. They’ve seen it all and can help get all the credits and deductions you deserve. Okay, now back to your side hustle. Do you have to be an “entrepreneur,” replete with a big, fat business plan in hand, to make a little extra cash on the side? What if I told you that in 27 days you can come up with an idea, implement it, and potentially start making some extra income on the side? That is what you call a side hustle, which also happens to be the title of a book from Chris Guillebeau, who's nice enough to join us this weekend. While the thought of quitting your day job to pursue a business of your own may be intoxicating and even escapist, it may also be a bit unrealistic. Most of us can’t just up and quit a job that delivers a regular paycheck and benefits, to boot. But what if you could quickly and easily create an additional stream of income without giving up the security of a full-time job? Enter Chris and the side hustle. Have a money question? GameStop: The Internet vs. Wall Street Part Two
914
When the worlds of finance and tech collide, my man, Jeff Bakalar, is my go to source! (And I'm his go to source, which is why he had me on his CNET show earlier in the week to help explain the concept of short selling. You can check it out here.) You've heard Jeff on the pod before, but in case you've forgotten, Jeff is the editor-at-large at CNET, and a total tech geek who's with us this weekend to help explain what in the world happened this week with GameStop and Reddit. GameStop, the brick-and-mortar video game seller that many presumed was destined to the dustbin of retailers, started to attract enormous interest from individual investors on Reddit, a message board where community members create content, submit links, and comment on specific topics (subreddits). The GameStop believers touted the upside as early as mid-2019, after Michael Burry (the guy featured in “The Big Short,” who bet against the housing market in the mid-2000’s) had amassed a big position in the company. The chatter continued into 2020, when GameStop was trading at about $4/share. GameStop saw the culmination of the mother of all short squeezes on January 27th, when the stock soared by more than 130 percent to nearly $350/share, almost ten times the value from the prior week and putting its year-to-date return at 900 percent. And remember folks, those who are investing in volatile stocks like GameStop should be prepared for a wild ride, and should only risk what they can afford to lose.  Have a money question? The China Hustle Part Two
1131
Next up on the list of films to stream this holiday weekend is The China Hustle. The documentary begins amid the depths of the 2008 financial crisis, when we meet protagonist Dan David and a band of Wall Street outsiders. These detective-like investors operate on the fringes of the financial world, scouring global markets for money making opportunities. With the U.S. economy and markets in a tailspin, they turn to China, where there is what seems like a modern day gold rush. Chinese stock market indexes are doubling every year and the potential seems endless. There’s one problem, though: U.S. investors can’t participate because they are barred from investing directly in Chinese markets. But this is America, and people always find a way. A few Wall Street operators create a novel solution by bringing hundreds of promising Chinese companies directly to U.S. stock markets. All of the sudden, US investors can get in on the Chinese miracle, without leaving the comforting confines of the NYSE and the NASDAQ. It all seems to be going well, until detectives discover that most of the companies they’re investing in are frauds, producing phony balance sheets, claiming sham inventory levels and celebrating non-existent profits. The investors flip their strategy on its head and begin to master the art of short selling, essentially, betting that a company will fail. Have a money question? Email me here. Chasing the FIRE Movement
1085
If you're looking for something to stream over the next week or so, we're going back into the archives this weekend. First up is the FIRE movement. Today we're re-airing an interview with Travis Shakespeare, director of a documentary called Playing with FIRE, which follows 35 year old Scott Rieckens, his wife Taylor, and their toddler Jovie as the family decides to embark on a year-long odyssey to understand the rules of the FIRE movement and test their willingness to reject the standard narrative of adult life. When Scott hears a prominent leader and “early retiree” in the FIRE movement subculture interviewed on a podcast, he enlists his wife to abandon everything they’ve been taught about the role of money in adulthood and instead focus on pursuing financial independence.  But doing so requires an about face since their current path has them spending every dime they make living the “Instagram” life in an expensive San Diego suburb, driving luxury cars, and eating at fancy restaurants.  It’s an interesting tale full of ups and downs. If the FIRE movement is something you’re interested in, this film is a must watch. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. Post Corona with Scott Galloway Part Two
1010
The COVID-19 outbreak has turned bedrooms into offices, pitted young against old, and widened the gaps between rich and poor, red and blue, the mask wearers and the mask haters.  Some businesses, like home exercise company Peloton, video conference software maker Zoom, and Amazon, woke up to find themselves crushed under an avalanche of consumer demand.  Others, like the restaurant, travel, hospitality, and live entertainment industries, scrambled to escape obliteration. But as New York Times bestselling author Scott Galloway argues, the pandemic has not been a change agent so much as an accelerant of trends already well underway. In his latest book, Post Corona, he outlines the contours of the crisis and the opportunities that lie ahead. Have a money question? Email me here. What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut. What if there was a better way to make quality decisions so you can think clearly, feel more confident, second-guess yourself less, and ultimately be more decisive and be more productive? What better time to binge watch a new show, or revisit a favorite, than Thanksgiving weekend? The Gift of Humanity Part Two
499
Since this episode is dropping on Thanksgiving we thought we’d do something a bit different. Instead of focusing on bettering ourselves financially, we wanted to introduce you to StoryCorps, a non-profit organization that strives to make the world better off by preserving and sharing stories, build connections and create a more just and compassionate world. In short, it serves as a good reminder of the things that matter most. And who better to help us stay in the giving thanks spirit than our guest Dave Isay, the founder and president of StoryCorps. His goal is simple: to use stories to remind us of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters. At the same time, StoryCorps is creating an invaluable archive for future generations as every interview is housed at the Library of Congress. So as you’re sitting around this Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends, I encourage you to use StoryCorps Connect (virtually) or the StoryCorps app (in person) and take part in The Great Thanksgiving Listen, a national movement that empowers people of all ages to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview. The Student Loan Burden Part Two
873
Last week in the NYT there was an article titled, For Millions Deep in Student Loan Debt, Bankruptcy Is No Easy Fix, which basically explains how darn difficult it is to discharge student loan debt, with only a few hundred people a year even trying. It's a very good read, so I suggest you check it out. It got us thinking that we should re-run an interview from last year with Caitlin Zaloom, professor and author of Indebted: How Families Make College Work at Any Cost. The book does a great job of takes readers into the homes of middle-class families throughout the nation to reveal the hidden consequences of student debt and the ways that financing college has transformed family life. The Student Loan Burden Part One

Last week in the NYT there was an article titled, For Millions Deep in Student Loan Debt, Bankruptcy Is No Easy Fix, which basically explains how darn difficult it is to discharge student loan debt, with only a few hundred people a year even trying. The State of Retirement
895
Yesterday it was Charles Schwab, today it's his daughter Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, who joined us to discuss a recent retirement survey conducted by Schwab. The online survey was conducted among 2,000 Americans aged 55 to 75 with at least $100,000 in investable assets.  Among the findings: More than 80% of those who have retired and those soon-to-retire believe their lifestyle in retirement will be everything that they envision Aspiring retirees expect to retire six years later (at age 66) than accomplished retirees did 19% of survey respondents say they or their spouse were financially impacted by COVID-19 52% of respondents say they’re more focused on developing a retirement plan due to COVID-19   It's a true family affair this weekend on Jill on Money! 1-on-1 with Charles Schwab
1501
We decided to re-run an interview we did a while back with Charles Schwab, yes, that Charles Schwab, the founder of The Charles Schwab Corporation. He joined us to talk about his personal memoir, Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest, in which he describes his passion to have Main Street participate in the growing economy as investors and owners, not only earners. Schwab opens up about the challenges he faced while starting his fledgling company in the 1970s and recounts the company’s game-changing sale to Bank of America, and how, in the end, the merger almost doomed his organization. A remarkable story of a company succeeding by challenging norms and conventions through decades of change, Invested also offers unique insights and lifelong principles for readers, the values that Schwab has lived and worked by that have made him one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time. The Election and Your Money Part Two
1054
In October 2016, I warned that in advance of the presidential election, “you should not make changes to your portfolio in an effort to outfox the tried and true investment strategy of identifying your personal goals and objectives; creating and sticking to a diversified asset allocation plan, using low cost index funds; and rebalancing two to four times a year.” Four years later, I am sticking to that guidance, so let’s just pinky-swear that you won’t try to adjust your investments or time whatever market movement you expect, and I promise not to lecture you about the folly of trying to time the market, OK? To help us break down how the upcoming election may impact your investments, we're joined by Nathan Sheets, Chief Economist and Head of Global Macroeconomic Research at PGIM Fixed Income.  Have a money question?
