Olympic Preview Part 2; Justice for Bower and Juda
02:35:16

US Men's National Team: A Never-ending Controversy

  • Neither Paul Juda—who earned the US an Olympic +1 spot—nor Olympic alternate Allan Bower were given funded spots on the US national team or invited to the world selection camp. This is bonkers, and Kensley is about to lose it. (Head to the 2-hour mark of this mega-sode for a deep dive into the documentation and USAG's statements.)

Olympic Preview Part 2

  • This Olympic preview comes with a 2-per-country trigger warning. The content discussed here may be re-traumatizing for those who have experienced 2-per-country or are sensitive to 2-per-country issues. Please take care of yourselves and watch with care. If you need support, please contact the Jordyn Wieber Fan Club at 1-800-Not-Over-It.
    • Brace yourselves: We predict Simone Biles will win the women's all-around. But who are the next-best contenders for medals?
    • It's going to be Oksana Chusovitina's 8th Olympics. Why are people talking about anything else?
    • Why pommel horse is going to be the most exciting final

Tokyo Olympics Women's Gymnastics Team Preview
01:53:12

OLYMPIC PREVIEW PART 1: Teams

  • Today, we preview the 12 teams qualified to the women's competition at the Olympics: who's on them, expectations, storylines, and medal hopes.
    • United States: How much of a fall buffer does the US have over everyone else? What records is Simone going to break, and when? And what 2-per-country problems should we start worrying about?
    • Russia: How has this Russian generation closed the gap on the United States? Will Russia beat China for silver? Will a Russian win an all-around medal?
    • China: How China is changing the tired narrative, both in age and event strength. You want 2-per-country drama? Check out the Chinese team trying to make the beam final.
    • Japan: How will the team handle the host-country pressure? And how do we bring #JusticeforMai full circle?
    • Italy: It's Vanessa Ferrari's 4th Olympics. Will a year of injuries compromise Italy's chance of another bronze medal?
  • All your US questions post-trials in a rapid-fire Q&A. Well, medium-fire. OK, slow-fire. Plus what happened to Charlotte Drury and many other trampolinists. We discuss why the women's alternates changed since Olympic Trials.
    • France: It's Melanie time! Plus, can Boyer do it again? How will the team fare without Lorette Charpy?
    • Canada: Never count out Ellie Black. The proper response to Brooklyn Moors' floor. How will an event-final focused selection strategy affect the team score?
    • Netherlands: Eythora's voice-floor, Sanne's beam, and everything else about the most artistic team at the Olympics.
    • Belgium: Will Nina win bars gold? Plus an intense breakdown of her very divisive floor routine.
    • Germany: The sentimental underdogs of the Olympics bringing the age and unitard revolution. Also, why does Seitz not have more medals, and what are we doing about that?
    • Spain: How do we get Roxana Popa back a floor final?

Olympic Trials Party and Postmortem

OLYMPIC TRIALS

  • The Olympic team has been named
    • The 4th spot: Why "going by the scores" and "going by the all-around standings" are NOT the same thing
    • The misunderstanding about the actual problem with Martha's way of doing things
    • We make the arguments for both MyKayla Skinner and Grace McCallum for the Olympic team
    • Why Tom Forster's explanation didn't help, and why the athletes didn't actually "select themselves"
      • Olympic Trials -- "Even though the computer tells us MyKayla on the team would be a couple of tenths higher, we're so so fortunate that our athletes are so strong that I don't think it's going to come down to tenths of a point in Tokyo. We didn't feel like it was worth changing the integrity of the process simply for a couple of tenths." - Tom Forster
      • US Championships, Jessica asked, "Regarding the two team positions that will be selected, is it going to be closer to the 3-up-3 count highest score potential or just the top four all-around?"
        • “Erm, well no, it will be.. you know the job is to put forth the strongest team that we believe can hit 3-up-3 count. And so, by rule, the top two all-rounders will be automatically on the team. And then Pro Score has a whole query system that shows us every possible scenario of team formation to get the highest score. So, we'll look at that to try to determine how to complete the team."
    • The blatant self-sabotage that is the US women's use of the +1 spot
    • Justice for Shilese Jones and Riley McCusker! Why did the women not select a 5th alternate?
    • TIME Magazine enters the Hall of Shame
    • A RAGE-O-METER that we swear we didn't write ourselves
  • The Actual Competition for a Second
    • Sunisa Lee outscored Simone on day 2. We gush about her everything, with a reminder about gymnastics goldfish memories
    • Jordan Chiles is the most consistent gymnast in the United States
    • Sparing a thought for Leanne Wong's very important floor routine
    • Who do we think got Senoh-bars-ed off the Olympic team?
    • And update on Emily Lee, as well as Jade Carey's Olympic plans
  • The Men's Team
    • We...agree with it? Good work, men's team.

Simone Biles Yurchenko Double Pike Has Landed and US Classic Review
01:46:49

US CLASSIC

  • Simone Biles officially debuted the Yurchenko double pike. We discuss how awesome it is, and Spencer has 84 things to say about the D score.
    • What Tom Forster, US High Performance Coordinator, said when Jessica asked if USAG would fight the low D score given to Simone's vault.
    • Simone gave credit to both of her coaching teams. She's been doing the Yurchenko double pike for over ten years (see our interview in 2013), first with Aimee Boorman and now competing it with Cecile and Laurent Landi.
  • Jordan Chiles went 57+ again. Is she an Olympic lock?
  • Can anyone stop the reliability of bars champion Kayla DiCello?
  • OUTSPOKEN GROWN ASS WOMEN ADULTS - Simone, Morgan Hurd and MyKayla Skinner do not hold back in interviews
    • "The way Marta did things, it was kinda brutal and it didn't need to be that way. With Tom and the rest of the team, it's a growing experience, but the changes have been really good. Tom is so supportive. It's so weird having a relationship with a national coach." - MyKayla Skinner
    • "I don't think I'd be able to do elite gymnastics now if Marta was here. In some ways it's been a lot nicer not having her around. With consistency, though, she was good at making us hit under pressure. Since Simone and I have that experience, we can help the younger generation." - MyKayla Skinner
    • On her activism as a world champion regularly demonstrating at Black Lives Matter protests and anti-asian hate rallies,  "I have to give credit to the brave survivors who paved the way and opened the floor for me to use my voice. These are much bigger than gymnastics. If gymnastics disappeared tomorrow, these issues would still be there. I'm a person first, and a gymnast second." - Morgan Hurd ,who also added when speaking about losing followers on social media because of her opinions, "I don't need people who don't think human rights are a given to be supporting me."
  • Chellsie Memmel competed! We're very excited, and even more excited to see her at nationals.
  • Riley McCusker's injury — what happened there?
  • Laure Hernandez eponymous bars skill news

NCAA Championships Recap and Jaime Santos Esq explains the NCAA case before the Supreme Court
02:04:34

BREAKING NEWS

  • We reached out to USAG about Jade Carey's Olympic spot, whether she's going to compete at Trials, and whether she'll be considered for the main team. Their answer was wild. And now we have some additional questions:
    • "Based on our understanding of the current FIG qualification rules, we believe Jade Carey’s performances on the floor exercise in the World Cup Series have mathematically qualified her, by name, to the Tokyo Olympic Games. Barring any rule changes, we anticipate that FIG will award her the spot. We are extremely proud of Jade’s performance on the world stage, which earned her this well-deserved opportunity. This path – to pursue the opportunity for an individual qualification – was open to certain qualified national team athletes. No other eligible athletes opted to pursue this qualification route. We anticipate that Jade will be competing at Trials. Unless she accepts the individual spot beforehand, Jade would be eligible to make the four-person team. At this time, FIG has not announced when they will officially award the spot or whether they will impose a deadline for acceptance. In any event, the choice to accept or reject the qualified spot is hers, and she has the full support of USA Gymnastics in any outcome."
  • Golden is coming. A six-episode docuseries about Laurie Hernandez (produced by Deanna Hong), Morgan Hurd, Suni Lee, Konnor McClain, and MyKayla Skinner in the run-up to Trials.

Soviet Gymnastics: Not the Specter of Evil (Commissioned)
01:53:23

Club Gym Nerd member Casey has commissioned an episode all about the greats of Soviet Gymnastics, and how they weren't exactly the "specter of evil" that NBC told us they were.

  • Top 10 Soviet Gymnasts of All Time. Make your pick. No redos. No takebacks.
  • Prof. O'Beirne's history of the cold war. When did the USSR compete? What made them so successful? Are wolf turns their fault? And why don't we spend more time talking about Maria Tyshko, Galina Urbanovich, and Maria Gorokhovskaya?
  • That time the Soviets lost, and the epic 1981 world championships cheating conspiracies
  • What might have been for Elena Mukhina
  • What would have happened if the Soviets had competed at the 1984 Olympics?
  • Bogi, Chuso, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the lasting legacy

MEET NEWS

The Friendship and Solidarity Competition in Tokyo went off without a hitch! At least...if you don't count the gymnastics. We discuss:

  • COVID protocols and fancy special spraying machines
  • Japan just hosting all the gymnastics now and forever. We might be fine with it
  • Angelina Melnikova is having a GREAT pandemic, and Nikita Nagornyy's is pretty good too
  • Sophia Butler and Yana Vorona delivering our skills (well, combinations) of the week
  • Kohei things and casual middle-school Yurchenko 2.5s
  • The difference between a Tsukahara (Tsuk) and a Kazamatsu (Kaz) vault.
  • Plus, the statuses of Shilese Jones and eMjae Frazier, comeback performances from Zhang Jin and Chiaki Hatakeda, whether we should be worried about Artur Dalaloyan, and which events are jinxed (all of them)
  • Jessica and Kensley's feelings corner and international friendships and world peace and whatnot

  • Who's pulling out of Euros now, contingency plans for holding an Olympics with fans, Gymnast Alliance news from Switzerland, and a (shockingly non-ironic) coaching award for Bellu and Bitang.

DEFYING GRAVITY

In part 2 of our recap of the series, Spencer reviews and fact checks Jessica's performance and is a little too gleeful about it. We discuss Tracee Talavera's inside story from the 2000 selection process, the "controversy" about Grace McCallum, which team was really the favorite in 2008, the strength of the abuse episode, and the latest stop on the Nellie Kim ego tour. Plus, a listener has feedback on the xenophobia of the US gymnastics coaching-abuse narrative (and Jessica remembers that time Chellsie Memmel went to Italy for that gymnastics art exhibition/political statement).

GYMTERNET NEWS

  • Jessica reminds everyone to vote and be prepared in case a candidate does not concede the election.
  • Big news in NCAA – Deanne Soza has retired, Elise Ray is leaving Washington, and Emma Malabuyo is deferring
  • Larisa Iordache hopes to return at Euros in December! Helen Hu's beam mount!
  • The Friendship and Solidarity meet is the greatest pressure in Watanabe's life

  • Sexually inappropriate comments about adults: Double nope.
  • Infantilizing adults and calling them little girls: Triple nope.
  • Weight Shaming: The Monica Phelps Chapter

Because national borders are stupid. This week: Japanese and Chinese Nationals!

ALL-JAPAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

From Mai's triumphant and dominant all-around performance (that might have been based on spite), to the return of Asuka Teramoto from her Achilles injury, to the surprise silver medal for Yuna Hiraiwa and the unacceptable Sae Miyakawa erasure, we break down everything that happened at Japan's return to competition. On the men's side, we discuss Kohei's self-reinvention as a high bar specialist, what that means for Hidetaka Miyachi, Kenzo smiling his way to vault credit, and Carlos Yulo's opportunity for comedy.

CHINESE NATIONALS

Another national title for Liu Tingting. Why we can't stop talking about Guan Chenchen (and rules about what dance you have to do any time you say the name Guan Chenchen). Wei Xiaoyuan and the magic hair bow. Qi Qi bringing floor back. All the side jumps. Horror at the stupid physical testing rules. New favorites. Old favorites. Medium favorites. Injured favorites. The fundamental repulsiveness of a white pommel horse. Sun Wei's surprise AA title. We've got it all.

Originally released in June 2017. Vanessa Atler is an American treasure and fans have loved her from the moment they first saw her elegant power. She's a multi-time national champion, multi-World Cup champion, Goodwill Games event champion. She would probably have made the 1996 Olympic team had she been age eligible. 430: Athlete A with Jennifer Sey
01:51:57

Club Gym Nerd members can watch the podcast being recorded (pre-edits with all the flubs and hiccups) and see video of the routines we discuss.

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW

Jennifer Sey became the US national champion in 1986, just seven months after breaking her femur at the 1985 world championships, an injury that led to a change in rules about bars spotting. In 2008, she published her groundbreaking memoir Chalked Up and has since been an advocate for survivors and those fighting against abuse in gymnastics. She produced the documentary Athlete A about the failures of USA Gymnastics to deal with the criminal ex-doctor, which premieres on Netflix this week. We talked with her about what she hopes the general public learns about gymnastics culture from the film, whether the Maggie Haney suspension represents progress or not, why watching Kerri Strug vault in 1996 didn't feel like a glorious moment to her, and balancing the horror of Athlete A with hope by focusing on the triumphs of Maggie Nichols, Rachael Denhollander, Jamie Dantzscher, and the Indy Star journalists.

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW

Alexis Brown was a UC Davis gymnast, is the co-program record holder on beam, and knelt during the national anthem in the 2017 and 2018 NCAA seasons. We caught up with Alexis to hear her thoughts on kneeling now—two years on—and how she feels about the current protests against police brutality of black Americans. She tells us whether she feels more hopeful or disheartened about the experience in retrospect, what she makes of the NCAA programs who haven't made statements, and what she would like to see from white members of the gymnastics community. 425: GymCastic Fixes Judging (Commission)
02:00:10

This week's episode has been commissioned by an anonymous Club Gym Nerd member and current gymnastics judge who said, "You complain about judging all the time." (WHAT, US??? NEVER!) "Tell us what you would do if you were in charge of women's officials for NCAA and JO meets." We shall gladly oblige! Surprise, surprise, we're not short of opinions. We tackle nasty problem areas like transparency, the Old Girls Network, "reputation," judging consistency, bias, and subjectivity, while answering questions about whether having been a gymnast makes you a better judge, appropriate processes for judge selection and evaluation, and how judges should get the $$$$$$$. We also make a list of the problems with college judging and what to do about them. So basically, we fix everything that's wrong with everything. You're welcome, gymnastics.

GYMTERNET NEWS

This week's episode was commissioned by Anonymous, who requested an episode about the US men's bronze-medal performance in the 2008 team final, saying: “I would like to dedicate the commission to all of the females, be it as coaches, judges or fans, who have fled the WAG dark side to appreciate all of the joys, amazement and wonders on the extraordinary MAG side of the sport. The story of the 2008 US Men's Team Bronze is a perfect example of why we love MAG so much.”

  • Most dramatic selection EVAH: We've got freak mat injuries, positive drug tests that USAG continues lying about on its website (FUN), injury petitions directly onto the Olympic team, mysterious demonstrations of readiness at camp, last minute-withdrawals, and a team of backups with absolutely no chance of winning a medal.

Spencer is alone this week for a comprehensive explainer of this comically complicated 2020 Olympic qualification process, answering all the questions you were too afraid to ask because you didn't quite understand them.

THE PROCESS

  • How teams qualify to the Olympics from worlds
  • How individuals qualify to the Olympics from worlds
  • WTF the "Jade Carey route" is
  • How the all-around world cups are different from the apparatus world cups and why they matter (AHHHHH)
  • Why continental championships are so important in 2020

YOUR QUESTIONS

  • Jade Carey?
  • Sub-question: Jade Carey, Jade Carey, Jade Carey?
  • How is the US going to qualify its fifth and sixth women to the Olympics?
  • What will these non-team individuals even do at the Olympics?
  • What should the US strategy be for that second individual spot?
  • How does 2-per-country work at the Olympics with all these individuals?
  • BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF THE US WANTS JADE CAREY ON THE TEAM OF 4?!?!?!
  • Could the US send MyKayla Skinner and/or Sunisa Lee to apparatus world cups?
  • Won't somebody PLEASE think about Becky Downie and Epke Zonerland??? (Yes.)
  • What are the best chances for the US men to get extra Olympic spots?
  • Which countries are going to end up with 6 athletes at the Olympics?

GYMTERNET NEWS

We begin this week with a visit back to the land of dumpster fires. Louise Radnofsky has a piece for the WSJ on how information about the Nassar investigation was withheld from Simone—and information that Simone was a likely victim was in turn withheld from the FBI. We delve into the predictably terrible things we learn about Steve Penny and why information like this is still trickling out three years later, with further reporting from Scott Reid at the OC Register on the behavior of the FBI and how many holes there still are in our understanding of the FBI's failures.

COTTBUS WORLD CUP

Now to the fun part! The 5th of 8 events in the apparatus Olympic qualification series is now complete, and we discuss

  • Does the FIG understand its own Olympic qualification rules?
  • Andrea Maldonado debuted a FRONT TRIPLE FULL and got it named after herself
  • Hidetaka Miyachi isn't real, and how the demon spirit of Epke's sinuses disrupted the HB final
  • Yu Linmin, Maria Paseka, and the state of the "Jade Carey spot"
  • Whose Olympic hopes are on life support, the return of Claudia Fragapane, sighRomania, and Spencer has some unacceptable, disgusting heresy to spout about Marta Pihan-Kulesza.
  • Japanese gymnasts you might not know but need to: Urara Ashikawa (who beat Li Qi) and Kazuki Minami
  • General weird observations about Hayden Skinner's floor run, Stephen Nedoroscik's devastating lack of goggles, justice for Emma Nedov, which MAG vaulter is "well hung," a unique Little Red Riding Hood performance, and that time Jessica thought Teja Belak did an Amanar which makes Spencer exhibit joy for the very first time.

This episode has been commissioned by Club Gym Nerd member Billy, who has used his commission to give a gift to you, the listeners, by commissioning a fan-idea episode—it's a special tribute to the most dedicated of gym nerds for our 400th episode! This is a super-extra gym nerdy topic submitted by Poor Lawyer who said, "spend one hour designing compulsory routines for 2024, if they returned." Eeeeeeee! (Spoiler alert: it's more than an hour.)  We discuss the background of compulsories and why we love them (a segment for the young youthful youngs who may have grown up in a time without compulsories), celebrate Spencer's favorite part of any game—an extensive review of the rules before you start—and go event by event to design the definitely real and absolutely going to happen compulsory routines at the 2024 Olympics. It mostly consists of Spencer presenting awesome, carefully constructed routines and Jessica callously and viciously tearing them to shreds. You guys, it's on. We even have some ideas for men's compulsories (on the good events).

399: CHUSO (Commissioned)
01:27:39

This episode has been commissioned by Club Gym Nerd member Britt, who asked for an episode all about the career of Oksana Chusovitina, saying, “I wanted to wait until she retired, but who knows when she will ever actually retire.” Correct. As we have established, she’s not allowed.

  • Part 1 – What Is It About Chuso?
    • Jessica takes us on a scenic tour of Chuso's life (and also the history of the internet?), from her start in Uzbekistan, to her time with the Unified Team, to her marriage and her son's illness, to the Germany years, and full circle back to Uzbekistan again. There will be some feelings.
    • Chuso's longevity by the numbers — 7 Olympics, 17 world championships, and 13 combined medals. Plus, Spencer searches through the archives to find the first instance of a commentator being surprised that Chuso is still competing.
  • Part 2 - The Big Fat Chuso Quiz
  • Part 3 - The Early Years
    • Chuso's successful junior career, her major international debut in 1990, and the fortuitous (for her) circumstances that leg to her breakout performance at the 1991 world championships and making the 1992 Olympic team.
  • Part 4 - Eponymous Skills
    • Chusovitina has 5 eponymous skills in the code of points across three events. We break down each one and discuss other skills Chuso could have had named after herself—as well as whose skills died so that Chuso could live
    • Jessica doesn't care for the code's treatment of full-out elements or twisting pike elements, both of which have personally victimized Oksana Chusovitina
  • Part Feelings - Pause for Love Story
    • Jessica tricks Spencer into talking about love things or whatever by turning it into a test
  • Part 5 - The Germany Years
    • Chuso enjoyed the best all-around finishes of her career while competing for Germany in the mid-late 2000s. We discuss reasons, both mental and technical. And also the Jean Shorts Exhibition.
  • Part 6 - Chuso By Event
    • Chuso's constancy on vault — except for the Prod years. Because everyone makes mistakes
    • No-grips bars, and how she made it work for herself in 2008
    • Chuso's best beam era came in her 30s, and what if she could do a routine of all punch fronts
    • Our favorite Chuso floor - the split-leg DLO to punch front from 2002.

Things You Only Know If You're a Gymnast
01:36:16

This week, we have a commission from Club Gym Nerd member Sara, who requested an episode all about the things you only know if you've actually done gymnastics. But that's not all! We have the pleasure of being joined by a special guest, Dutch elite gymnast and 2017 world floor finalist Bram Verhofstad, to help us in this vital mission.   From how annoying it is when people ask if you're going to the Olympics (NO! SHUT IT!), to pit boogers and urban legends (or not so urban legends) about finding rats in the pit, to the only proper way to break in grips, to gymnast's gross cool and impressive hands, to favorite beams, to vault-step rituals, to awkward spotting accidents, it turns out there's a lot that gymnasts know that no one else could ever understand. Plus, you're going to learn what "tricky boys" are, and you won't be disappointed.

PLEASE TAKE OUR ADVERTISER SURVEY http://survey.libsyn.com/gymcastic

GYMTERNET NEWS

This week, we're discussing Russians and investigations (but not Russia investigations) as the USAG dumpster fire and Russian Cup dominate the headlines.

  • Maggie Haney, coach of Laurie Hernandez and Riley McCusker, is under investigation for allegations of verbal and emotional abuse and pressuring athletes to compete while injured.
  • Anna Li denied wrongdoing and came out as a survivor as well. We discuss that timing.
    • According to new reporting, USAG has been aware of allegations against Anna Li and Wu Jiani since at least 2017. At nationals, Li Li Leung said they first learned of allegations in July of this year.
  • Aliya Mustafina is out of worlds. Cancel it.
  • Jade Carey is training a triple double (and there was a broke-ass article about it that we discuss)
  • The qualification system for worlds in 2021-2023 is now official
  • The FIG has approved the raising of the uneven bars by 5cm next quad. Is this a big deal?
  • Junior worlds is officially a thing

  • Moving on from elite news: Juliette Bossu, Agnes Suto-Tuuha, and Alyona Shchennikova
  • Read of the week: When athletes kneel, the rotten U.S. Olympic regime has no moral standing to object. A great column by Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post.
  • Um...the Aurora Games

RUSSIAN CUP

  • Mustafina and Nabieva didn't compete but it was still a meet somehow
  • Vladislava Urazbova is the queen of queens and everyone is dying about her triple Y
  • Gerasimova is another junior heiress (and had a hilarious wolf turn too)
  • Melnikova is doing fine (no matter what Valentina says), Lilia Akhaimova is the star Russia needs, what is up with Maria Paseka, the Daria Spridonova renaissance, and worries that Simakova is going to get Seda-ed.

374: Where We've Been and Where We're Heading (Commissioned)
01:10:17

In the second episode commissioned by the Participation Sisters, we talk about...ourselves? They've commissioned an episode called The GymCastic Podcast: Where We've been and Where We're Heading, saying very nice things like: “GymCastic has given gym fans everything we always knew we always wanted but weren't getting from major news outlets: Weekly in-depth updates, impassioned and informed stances on both serious and trivial topics, interviews with past and former athletes and coaches, Rage-O-Meters, and more. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, GymCastic is ushering in a new paradigm for gymnastics reportage -- authentic, humorous, and hard-hitting. Many of us are curious about the evolution of the podcast. We'd love you to give us a "behind the scenes" look into how you got started, and where you hope to be in the future.” We answer questions like

  • How did you get started?
  • How did Jess meet Spencer?
  • How do/did you juggle your day job with your podcast?
  • What was your first interview like, and how has your interview style evolved based on lessons learned?
  • How did you fall in LOVE with gymnastics?
  • What has been the most challenging interview?
  • If you had an unlimited budget, what would GymCastic evolve into?
  • What does your "realistic" road map look like for the future?

If you like this episode you will also enjoy, Episode 100. This is the shamelessly vainglorious episode where we answer all of your questions about our irrelevant personal lives, and the origins of show, includes hosts Dr. Uncle Tim, Blythe, Evan and Jessica.

BUM-BUM-BUMMMMMMMM

To start things off this week, we are joined by a little someone you might have heard of named Morgan Hurd, who has a special announcement about an exciting new project (WATCH HERE) she's been working on. It is subscription-free so you do not need a television subscription. In addition to the online episodes, we will be creating and posting exclusive content such as diaries and personal photos on social media in between episodes. What about TV? In the United States, episodes will be available on the cable network “Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA” in 2020.

JUNIOR WORLDS

Athletes from around the world gathered in Hungary for the inaugural junior world championship.

  • Thoughts on the concept of this meet: Does it undermine the purpose of an age limit in women's competition? Is it just a front for an elaborate conspiracy and other agendas (YES)?
  • We didn't get to watch the team/AA competition because the FIG is terrible at this
  • Coronation of the Russian junior amazing brilliant amazingness: with a special attention to Listunova's floor and important facial expressions
  • China's surprise team silver medal, with love for Ou Yushan's floor routine and China's competitive floor scores. You heard that right.
  • The US won bronze in the team competition and Jessica has a RAGE-O-METER for those of you who might have a problem with this. Spencer has a QUIETER-O-METER about pretending competitions were amazing even when they were OK

371: European Games 2019
01:00:55

EUROPEAN GAMES In our first episode of the week (look out for a junior worlds/gymternet news episode later in the week where we tell you all to GET A GRIP about the US performance), we take on the events of the second-ever European Games, which is definitely not the European Championships, you guys. Don't even think that it is. Because it's not.

  • Complaining about the format: 18 people in the AA final? Six in event finals?? One per country??? Top women's AA qualifiers starting on bars???? This is not how it goes, European Games. Not how it goes.
  • Fangirling the queen: Angelina Melnikova edition. She had kind of an amazing meet and even hit beam all of the times.
  • Success for France, Ukraine being too Ukraine to function, and why the splatfest of an all-around final was definitely the fault of that damn personal-space-violating fox.
  • The case of the last-minute allergic reaction
  • Nina's rollercoaster from bars fall to all-time ANGER BEAM
  • Why 80-hour, mid-meet medal ceremonies are not OK
  • Oh also Putin was there (???????)

370: Free Mai
01:23:42

In our second episode of the week covering the gymternet news only. Earlier this week we took a deep dive into the events of the American Classic, the first "big" elite meet of the summer. Let us know if you like the new format.

STORIES OF THE WEEK

  • Japan has gone crazy — Mai Murakami is not on Japan's worlds team, despite being healthy and MAI. Spencer explains how this travesty has been allowed to occur because of Japan's unnecessarily intransigent, early, and all-around-focused selection process
    • Kohei and Kenzo are ALSO not on Japan's worlds team (pause for gasps), though it's kind of a different situation going on there
  • USAG is making rules again — Jessica takes us inside the world of the Leotard Cut Debacle and new USAG leo rules that had the gym-parent community up in arms this month
    • The new Safe Sport regulations are out, which are good in theory but we have some questions about grooming, practicality, and spelling
    • New selection procedures — changes to the women's Olympic team selection, the Simone Clause, the independent observer, and WHAT ON EARTH is going on with the athlete rep situation
    • The junior worlds team has been named, and the Pan Ams training squad is official
  • The US men went to Japan – Kensley has an update on the US men's journey to Japan and what the US can learn from Japan's approach to MAG

GYMTERNET NEWS

  • Depression news: Rebeca Andrade has suffered another ACL injury, Parkettes coach John Holman has been restricted, Bailie Key has retired, and more
  • Skill news: Yeo Seojeong has a new front handspring 2/1 vault that she landed successfully at Korea Cup, and Keisuke Asato is training a piked Ri Se Gwang
  • Squeal news: Jessica has things to say about wrestling, littles overcoming obstacles, and gymnastics babies

AMERICAN CLASSIC

In our first episode of the week (look out for a gymternet news episode where we fight for justice for Mai Murakami later in the week), we take a deep dive into the events of the American Classic, the first "big" elite meet of the summer.  You can rewatch (or just watch) the replay streams on USAG's Youtube

  • General "what even is this meet" thoughts about...what even is this meet...and whether USAG needs to try to make it an actual event, with a gentle reminder that it's verrrrry early
  • Fangirling the queens: Faith Torrez and Ciena Alipio — why Faith Torrez was so much better than everyone else here, and what Ciena Alipio has in common with Ukrainians
  • Opportunities for comedy: Thank you to Emily Lee, Mia Heather, Ciena Alipio, and little Hopes gymnast for fulfilling the true prophecy and point of gymnastics by delivering the moments of the meet
  • Sunisa Lee's Nabieva + Bhardwaj. YOU GUYS. I MEAN...
  • The new juniors we're now officially obsessed with. Spoiler: it's all of them.
  • Spencer's opportunity to stop all this insufferable, deflating positivity and fill his metaphorical chalk bucket with refreshing negativity about some unpleasant trends
  • What we noticed from the seniors, including an episode CSI: Code of Points

GYMCASTIC GLOBAL

  • Dutch Nationals gave us a fight between Casimir Schmidt and Bart Deurloo on the men's side for who has the best (most) tattoos, while Naomi Visser continues to be the talk of the town, and LIEKE WEVERS IS BACK
  • Nina Derwael upgraded her bars routine again at the FIT Challenge, adding a casual new Stalder Tkatchev piked. To her Nabieva. And Derwael-Fenton.
  • History for Taiwan at the Asian Championships

368: No-No-Nunnoisms (Commissioned)
01:54:38

This episode has been commissioned by Club Gym Nerd members The Participation Sisters, who requested an episode called No-No Nunnoisms: The Era of Larger-Than-Life Coaches (and why it needed to end). Disclaimer: We're going to laugh about some of this stuff, and we also know Bela is horrible.

  • Is Bela Karolyi patient zero for this kind of gymnastics coaching?
  • Inside the belief that you needed an impassioned man to coach you to Olympic success (barf barf barf barf barf), and then the times when that was (sigh) actually true.
  • NBC's obsession with Bela Karolyi
    • That horrific 1996 fluff piece on Kerri Strug — His defeat? The only man who could make her dreams come true? That boat-rowing methodology? OH HELL NO.
    • "Bela's girls"
    • Obviously, Spencer can't resist talking about that creep-burger 1995 Moceanu fluff or crazy 1992 articles
  • Exaggerating the important of coaches by minimizing the athletes as "little girls," even when they're adults
  • Bela and Nunno and the 1992 Trials war of words
  • What have we (or should we have) learned from that era about the culture of the sport
  • Have we come out of the era of larger-than-life coaches?

Shawn and Nastia: From Feud to Friendship (Commissioned)
01:15:39

This week's episode has been commissioned by Brad, who commissioned this very special edition of GymCastic as a surprise gift for his girlfriend Tricia. We present...Shawn and Nastia: From Feud to Friendship

  • All the makings of a classic rivalry—the preordained champion with OLYMPIC DNA LEGACY OMG, versus the little upstart from Iowa corn-fed-doo-dee-doo who just bounced along bouncily
  • The context of the new open-ended code and the BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SPORT
  • Who ultimately won that battle?
  • The narrative of Nastia as "form" and Shawn as "power"—the aspects in which that holds up, and the aspects in which it definitely doesn't. Enough time has passed that we can get real about some of these skills.
  • "Nastia won the 2008 all-around because the Olympic judges loved her international look." We dive into that garbage barge and burn it from the inside.
  • The fan feud: Team Nastia or Team Shawn. You must pick a side.
  • The culture war imposed on Shawn and Nastia. The "all-American girl next door" versus "the foreigner" and how that influenced THE FEUD
  • And then Jessica officially pops off about the constant adjudication of whether prominent women are "best friends" or in a "catfight." (Psychology Today)

Regionals Preview (3:30)

NCAA Regional Championships begin this Thursday with the new play-in meets and end on Saturday, when the 8 teams advancing to nationals will be decided. Spencer gives the rundown of what to expect—while trying to fit in as many SYTYCD, Madonna, and Laura Linney references as possible. You know, gymnastics content.  Schedule here.

Interviews Galore!

Sarah (of the Shire) Brown (8:12) In her second season as head coach at Penn State, Sarah Brown joins us to talk about her time at GAGE, what it's really like there, and what happens if you're not turned out in the airport. Plus, the changes she tried to institute at Penn State after taking over at a program in turmoil, how transferring during her own college career informs her perspective on the athlete experience now, when we're going to see a four-element beam series in the Penn State lineup (spoiler: it's never), and whether Jessica is still allowed to call her Sarah of the Shire.  Lieve Olivera (49:31) Lieve Olivera was a Brevet judge from 1985 to 1996. She judged at world championships and world cups, has owned her own gym, was the media liaison at the 2000 Olympics, and has authored articles and given presentations on controversies in judging. So we obviously need to talk a lot about college gymnastics—the differences between college and international, how judges go about trying to reconcile their deductions with the need to rank routines, how best to improve college gymnastics judging, and the deductions she would have for an example routine. PLUS, behind the scenes stories about what happened in 2000 after the vault debacle and after Raducan was stripped of her medal. Nick Ruddock (1:19:36) Nick was a national coach for British Gymnastics who worked with everyone fro Ellie Downie to Amy Tinkler. He is now a consultant who has worked with 18 federations around the world, including Japan and the Netherlands (drink!). He emphasizes an athlete centered approach for longevity and high performance. Each year he shares his knowledge via GymCon which you've heard Jessica talk about one million times. Jessica asked him all of her burning technical, cultural and code questions.
