I enjoy Merritt's balanced reporting. His sidekick, Sarah Lane, is inarticulate and not very insightful, however. I also wish they would offer an alternative to Patreon, a prominent enforcer of the liberal cancel culture.

We talk about the chip shortage a lot on DTNS and I think we do a pretty good job of explaining the basics of the issue. There was fluctuation in orders there was unexpected demand and the chip plants are now operating at capacity while they try to work through the backlog and bring on new plants to add capacity. The shortage was most acute in automobiles because of the unexpected demand there but has started to affect other sectors as well.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation ordered Tencent to end its exclusive music licensing rights within 30 days including requirements for copyright holders to give the company better treatment than rivals. Google announced it will now designate a subset of APIs across the company as Google Enterprise APIs, which will be subject to strict guidelines about any change to them that would impact consumer software built around them. Sean Hollister at the Verge recently profiled how the YouTube channel Upscale is recreating classic video game cutscenes at high resolution. The channel does this using Topaz Video Enhance AI.

France’s competition authority fined Google €500 million for not negotiating in good faith to pay news publishers for the right to show their headlines and snippets in search and news results. The Verge’s Chaim Gartenberg discovered that the iPhone’s built-in weather app on recent versions of iOS never shows the temperature as 69 degrees Fahrenheit instead showing 68 degrees or 70 degrees. And Twitter mistakenly approves bot accounts.

New owners of Audacity updated the audio editor’s privacy policy with language indicating it was collecting user data for analytics and legal enforcement. Nintendo announced a new version of the Switch game console with a 7-inch screen and 720p OLED display. And Norway passed a law requiring anyone being paid to post on social media to disclose if posts have been modified and how. The law is meant to reduce pressure put on people due to “idealized people in advertising”.

Apple Makes Google's Cloud Rain - DTNS 4062

Alphabet’s drone-delivery company, Wing, in cooperation with the FAA launched the OpenSky app in the US. The app will allow hobbyist and commercial operators alike see where they can legally fly drones and request approval to operate in areas that are otherwise restricted. The Information’s sources say that as of May 2021, Apple is on track to spend $300 million on cloud storage through Google. And it was 0-day flaw, not 2018 bug, that let hackers mass-wipe My Book Live devices.

Companies would be required to make terms and conditions more transparent when offering a free trial. US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has revamped the Data Protection Act she introduced last year. A group of over 500 researchers have signed on to the BigScience project, an effort led by the startup Huggingface to build an open-soruce large language model to better understand natural-language processing. Facebook’s vice president of global affairs and former UK deputy prime minister Nick Clegg wrote an op-ed for CNBC calling for US lawmakers to create a new digital regulator. Ford reveals more information on the F-150 Lightning Pro’s extended-range version, capable of about 300 miles on a single charge and with a 240 V, 80 A charger (called the Charge Station Pro) that can fill the battery to 100% in eight hours. Price? Just under $50,000.

What the Flock is Going On - DTNS 3979

Flock cameras are used for neighborhood surveillance and can detect people, animals, and bicycles, but are best at detecting cars, specifically their license plates. Motherboard obtained hundreds of emails from about 20 police departments in the US detailing the use of a program called TALON to look up information collected from Flock cameras. More than 500 police departments in more than 1,000 US cities have access. Flock claims it helps police solve 4 to 5 crimes per hour. Is this a dangerous trend or one we should welcome?

Independent publishers thrive in China on platforms like WeChat and Toutiao. Chinese TV shows and movies are often made based on successful web novels. In China self-publishers are referred to as “We Media” both a reference to WeChat and being fan-driven. In 2020, 360 million users read articles published on WeChat public accounts. Self-publishers have always had to make sure they don’t attract the attention of Chinese censors. A regulation published January 22nd by the Cyberspace Administration of China requires accounts that “provide online news service to the public shall obtain the Internet News Information Permit and other relevant media accreditation.”

Monday, Inrupt announced an enterprise product to let developers build apps that use Solid's Pods. Inrupt worked with the BBC, the UK's National Health Service and the Government of Flanders in Belgium to develop its enterprise platform. Is this a step forward in allowing customers to manage their data privacy?
