The show is 5 star when Sara is out, 3 when she's in. It's not that she's a bad person, but she should not be on mic. She's unfocused, bumbling and adds nothing to the conversation. I long for a good Molly rant or Veronica or snubs. There's so many better female cohosts than Sara. As a long time fan through the CNET and Twit years, I would be a patron if she was not on the show, but I'm not paying for her. In fact I struggle to continue to listen at Al because of her.

I enjoy Merritt's balanced reporting. His sidekick, Sarah Lane, is inarticulate and not very insightful, however. I also wish they would offer an alternative to Patreon, a prominent enforcer of the liberal cancel culture.

Mailbag:

Sean the historian in Toronto sent in his thoughts on renting e-Bikes in Toronto. We'll put the full email in the show notes if you want, but here's the summary.

Sean used Zygg, which is $189 CAD/month on a month-to-month plan or $129/month on a 1-year plan as well as seasonal discounted rates. Last autumn he signed up for two months to try it out.

Sean says, "They delivered the bike directly to my home and all repairs and servicing was included in the price of the subscription. I... My commute is 25km. I tried it on a standard bike a couple of times, but it just wasn’t practical for me (too sweaty!). Switching to a pedal-assisted e-bike was the perfect solution for me. I was able to commute regularly to the office (2-3 days a week), arriving in about an hour and relatively sweat free."

And if you're worried about safety Sean added "these bikes are fast, but they aren’t faster than a standard road bike (many of which blew right by me on the way to work each day)."

Thanks Sean!

Live With It - The Remarkable 2
53:47

Starring Sarah Lane and Jenn Cutter

Sarah Lane gives her thoughts about the Remarkable 2, an e-ink tablet for writing and reading.

$299 (was $399 at time of purchase)

Marker Plus (pencil) - $129

*If you buy with Connect, you get a $150 discount on the hardware and 2 months free service, worth checking out.

Several subscription options

Marker Plus highlights:

  • An actual highlighter pen option!
  • Several different types of pens: ballpoint, calligraphy, pencil, mechanical pencil… all have slightly different feels on the tablet
  • Easy tap to navigate - you can use a finger tablet-style, but the Marker feels more efficient
  • Erase tool is just cool. The Remarkable is smart enough to know when you haven’t totally erased something and will clean up the rest.

Initial thoughts:

  • I don’t use a physical pen anymore, in fact I always struggle to find a pen in my house on the rare occasion I need one. But physically writing things down has always helped my memory retention, and the Remarkable 2 taps into that as an extremely polished writing tablet
  • I’m not much of a drawer/doodler/etc. There are plenty of really good use cases for Remarkable 2 that I won’t take advantage of.
  • Holy crap, signing documents is so easy!
  • The amount of document templates is impressive, I don’t know how you’d ever need something not in this library
  • Navigation takes a little getting used to, but it’s simple once you know what your options are
  • Syncing with my Google Drive is a game changer. (on supported files, of course)

E-Reader capability:

  • At first glance the Remarkable 2 isn’t a great e-reader. Despite the nice book size, it doesn’t have any sort of backlight… you really do have to be under a lamp as if it were an actual book. You’re not going to take this tablet camping.
  • It also doesn’t support DRM-ePUB. You can find non-DRM ebooks online, but not a Kindle type library
  • You can use Calibre (free ebook organizer software) + a plugin to strip DRM from an ePUB book, then it shows up on the Remarkable 2 just fine. I tried this with a couple library e-books. This process is not very intuitive, but it’s possible. However, it’s also illegal, so there’s that.

Nitpicks:

  • Last year I was gifted a Kindle Oasis, which has an adjustable backlit screen. It makes the Remarkable 2’s screen seem pretty dim. I wish there were a way to punch up brightness a bit.
  • The pencil does snap onto the magnetized sides of the Remarkable 2 but not always in the place I think it should be. For such a pricey add-on, I’m always worried it’ll go missing.
  • There are times I wish I had better internet integration. You can print anything online to PDF and sync from there, but that takes a few steps. I tried to use the Remarkable 2 for DTNS prep and it just didn’t make any sense.

OVERALL:

The Remarkable 2 is powerhouse for anyone annotating documents, sketching, freeform stuff. Although you can sync over WIFI and email documents easily from the tablet, it’s not really “online”

  • Love the form factor, I don’t think it would work at a smaller size
  • If you reach for your notepad regularly, you will love this tablet.
  • Pricing feels high, especially for the subscription options.

Cyberattack Hits Crypto.com - Threatwire
2:49

By Shannon Morse, ThreatWire

The world’s third largest cryptocurrency trading platform was hit with a cyberattack last week that compromised 483 customer accounts and led to $34 million crypto to be withdrawn. Crypto.com was targeted and US $33.8 million was stolen, though the CEO stated in multiple interviews that customer funds are not at risk.

The hack caused about $15 million in ethereum, $18.6 million bitcoin and $66,000 misc crypto to be stolen from the platform. The attack was detected on January 17th, at which time Crypto.com suspended withdrawals for about 14 hours. 2FA tokens were also revoked, so users had to re-sign in and set up new 2FA tokens for access.

While this crypto was stolen via unauthorized withdrawals, the platform fully reimbursed affected users. Transactions resumed on January 18. According to a Crypto.com post, their risk monitoring systems detected the attack, and saw transactions being approved without 2FA authentication, meaning the 2FA was being bypassed by attackers.

The company migrated to a completely new 2FA infrastructure in response. They also added that the company will be moving away from 2FA and moving to true multi factor authentication for end user security, and beefing up security with an Account Protection Program, which will offer better security for funds within the App and exchange. APP would also restore funds up to $250,000 in the event of unauthorized access.

A lot of technical information regarding this attack has not been shared with the public. For example - who was behind this attack? How were they able to bypass 2FA restrictions for withdrawals? What protocol was being used to implement 2FA and how does the new infrastructure fix these problems? Hopefully Crypto.com will share some of this information with their customers to ease some of the concerns shared via social media.
