375 - Bedroom Guitarists, the new Wampler pedal, Brian fights Robbie Williams
3721
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Have you ever foraged for mushrooms? No, not the ones that make you see faeries, the ones that offer sustenance...Blake has and tells us about it. Richard has listened to a podcast where Jo Wood, the former wife of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, interviews some of her fellow celebrity UFO fans, and he tells us the story that stuck in his mind about Robbie Williams before Brian tells us about his schoolyard fighting days. Whats the largest concert you ever went to? The guys talk about some ridiculous numbers Richard found out about whilst looking into some of the world's biggest concerts. This leads Brian to worry about the practicalities and then discuss bass guitar heroes including the bass player Darren Wall who stopped a shooter and is our Hero of the Week. Someone stole some instruments from one of Blake's friend’s bands (Kaonashi) and he is mad...and rightly so! In terms of thievery, almost nothing is worse than stealing someones tools and stopping them from working. Some people use the term "Bedroom Guitarist" as an insult to the level of skill a guitarist has, but the guys do not agree. However you make your music, as long as you enjoy it, it is all good. What if you work with guitars for a living - is it still fun? Find out what the guys think in this episode. Richard has one of Brian's new prototypes and it has surprised him despite his familiarity with the architecture... Crowds of millions, Inverting Op-amps, Joe Perry, Studio toys, 1972 Plexi amps, Tremelo pedals, Smokey amps, Investing in guitars ... It's all in this week's Chasing Tone! 367 - Summer NAMM, Aluminium necks, Digital v Analog, Rick Beato, and Jeff Bezos' rocket
2914
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Brian trolls Richard expertly before telling us about his experiences at Summer NAMM and it’s not like any Summer NAMM he’s been to before so he gives us a run down of the show before literally almost performing a different kind of run down as he tries to take out the competition. He’s also been checking out some new music…well new for Brian anyhow….and Richard attempts to educate Brian on early German Power metal. Brian then speculates about Winter NAMM and the attendance levels that may or may not manifest themselves. IK Multimedia, the creators of Amplitube, have come out with some cool looking pedals, and the guys chat about the concept and the large footprint IK have chosen. This brings up the subject of digital versus analog pedals and then the guys talks about how digital sounds different to different people and how age affects hearing. Taste and hearing loss have varying effects on our chase for tone as mentioned by one of our listeners, so the guys chat about it. Rick Beato has had some copyright issues with an episode about “The Cars” and Brian discusses it before smoothly transitioning into the newly stoked up debate about streaming which has gone as far as the British parliament. Will the men in glitter be round? Blake admits he likes Wham and Richard discusses the generosity of George Michael. Brian wants to move to Nashville, Woo-girls and pedal cars, Dodgy rocket designs, Aluminium necked guitars, it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! 365 - Sleeping is a logistical nightmare for Brian
3765
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Blake and Brian compare notes about the amazing setup JHS have and we learn a little of the professional media environment Josh has put together with his team. From broadcast tips to jamming with the guys, Brian breaks down his experience and how much he enjoyed it, and there was no mention of a giant ham but some mention of Dave lee Roth’s alternative career as a Paramedic. Does a popular piece of free audio software have spyware embedded? The guys chat around this controversial issue. This leads into a conversation about Ai generated music and the specific concept of bringing artists back from the dead using new technology. Originality is something that is often discussed in the pedal world, even though we know they are all basically tube screamer clones, and Brian has some views on this but most importantly has discovered a truly unique and original guitar pedal. We then discover a shocking dark secret about Richard's Epiphone Epoxy Guitars, Bone Saws, Van Halen, Custom 335s, Joe Bs Salty Vee, New Fenders, Crossroads (the movie), it’s all in this week's Chasing Tone! 364 - Brian knows his onions
4079
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Brian suffers from permanent timezone confusion and so the guys talk about universal time before they drift off onto AI powered tractors, lawn mowing meditation, and why Richard’s dad is not the lead guitar player in Saxon. Brian reveals he off to Kansas to see JHS, and will be going live with Josh this week, lets see what comes out of that meeting of minds… Blake tells us all about his new Orange cab and was surprised by the head he found he liked the best with it. He got some interesting information direct from Orange and shares his findings with everyone. A meme has been circulated relating to 3 stereotypical podcast hosts. Apparently all podcasts have the same three hosts and the guys wonder which apply to them. Sadly Brian doesn’t watch movies so has no idea what this means. But he has confessed to liking some Pink Floyd. Or has he? The guys then discover that if you draw a Venn diagram to figure out where the common musical thread between them is it ends up with a surprising result. Brian has a rant about people who unnecessarily fiddle with trim pots inside their pedals. It is not something he approves of (to put it mildly). Richard invents the Scissor-Lift pedalboard (tm) and performs a fascinating radio mime to describe this. Is there a shortage of guitar strings? Blake has insider knowledge and Brian taps him up for his unique requirements, and the guys discuss coated strings. Metallica covers, Blake and Brians impersonation of the St Anger snare sound, Canadian Les Paul purchasing, Peaches, Headless guitars, Epiphones, the dark art of truss rod tweaking, its all in this week's Chasing Tone! 363 - Rockin’ all over the world
3631
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Brian bemoans the software industry as he has technical issues and it fires him into rant mode. Wampler made a pedal once that people thought was too weird for us, Brian tries to relate this to cars, and the conversation drifts into hillbilly territory… Richard discovers that Brian, and Blake, have never heard of stadium dad rock giants, Status Quo, and is audibly shook by this telecaster based injustice. We discuss the infamous telecaster mods of Francis Rossi and then Brian reveals that the team have been working hard on some new products before he fantasises about breadboarding in Starbucks. Blake gives us an update on his Rickenbacker to vintage Orange cab trade, Richard admits he not really into vintage amps so the guys pour well deserved scorn on his silly views. They then have a little bit of a look at Orange as a brand and Brian lowers the tone and reveals why he is the worst medical doctor to have. How do you approach learning? Do online methods and apps work better for you than say traditional sheet music or tab ? The guys have different views on how they take in info and which learning style works for them. Brian then declares victory on the music taste front when Richard confesses to downloading Skid Row and Dokken. ASMR for electronics nerds, mean comments, Dad metal, Bigsby and Grunge pedals, did we mention Patreon? It’s all in this weeks episode of Chasing Tone! 362 - Seven Year Anniversary Bonanza!
4042
Brian and Blake are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast, and this week they are joined by Travis Feaster. Blake's conundrum - Should he swap his 6 String Rickenbacker 360 for a vintage Orange cab? The guys discuss how Rickenbacker manufacture their guitars and Travis shares some insider info on their production process. Travis describes his haggling nature and the guys talk about gear trading in general. Travis taps into Brian's hip and happening nature with a question about impulse responses and the guys have an in-depth discussion about IRs and Amp simulations…and then concludes what we all know, that the SLO 30 is the greatest amp on the planet. Brian also has a conundrum with mixing again and has been to Youtube university to learn a bit more so the guys have a chat about mixing while Blake becomes increasingly nervous about his vintage cab falling into the hands of someone who wont love it as much as him. What are the two biggest factors in an amplifier's sound ? You may be surprised to hear it isn’t the tubes… Blake gets angry with realtors, Travis plays “older” country gigs, Magnetic arm foolishness, it’s all in this weeks episode of Chasing Tone! 4370
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast. This week Richard learns about the wood shortage and rising prices of wood as a result whilst Brian once again avoids talking about capacitors and resistors, and Blake explains his totally legitimate theory of how to make playlists make him money whilst he sleeps....ok maybe it is slightly dodgy... 360 - Wampler is on Fire
4025
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast. The guys discuss the horrendous news that happened prior to recording - the factory where our pedals are built was damaged by a severe fire. It has caused some temporary delays, and a lot of "fun" issues, but we were absolutely bowled over by the support shown by some industry legends including Robert Keeley, Jamie from Earthquaker, and a number of other super cool folk. Meanwhile, Brian dreams of hotdogs...and attempts to explain the content of S'mores to Richard. Blake is opening up an Only Fans account, his bodybuilding finally pays off, and the fellers also debate the newly release UAP / UFO footage. We also take a look at the marketing genius of Joe Bonamassa and his new range of gardening accessories. What is the difference between a regular pedal and pedal for Bass guitars ? Brian explains some of those differences before becoming wildly enraged by the sticker on his new Squier Bass. The guys also chat about the latest spat between Roger Waters and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and draw an analogy with pro wrestling. Pedalboard shoes, Brian sings Spongebob, then he learns to swear in English, Blake ponders Goat Yoga, Richard wants to make foot shaped shoes and regrets his chilli choices, a horrible butt shaped guitar... 3758
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast. Blake has been accused of fabricating the truth a little, so the guys explore why this was not the case, and put the world to rights. Richard observes that the full moon may have created undue amounts of internet stupidity and then promptly puts his (size 13) foot right in it. 358 - We are playing basses now?
4244
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast. The guys muse about their bass guitars and bass guitars they are wanting to acquire and talk about the difference in playing techniques from the guitar. Mooer has released the GTRS intelligent guitar. Does a guitar need bluetooth and USB connectivity? The opinions are strong. If you could choose a ten year (not necessarily a decade per se) period of music, what would it be? The guys talk about the eras that inspire them. When did the guitar die? Some say that there seems to be a resurgence lately. The discussion takes a look at the idea. Meatless pizza, the Unge pedal, DOD pedals and the guys have all been made into Lego-like figure.. It’s all in this week’s Chasing Tone Podcast. 2481
Brian and Blake are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone podcast. Over the years there have been a lot of pedals introduced to the market, but have some classics like the OD 808 been forgotten? The guys muse the issue and remember some classics that may surprise you. We know pedals are all about tone, but does the artwork and graphics on a pedal matter? Does it make a difference on purchase decisions? Brian and Blake talk about it and Blake issues an interesting challenge to Brian for the next NAMM show. And Blake has noticed an increasing number of Helix and Fractal units becoming available on resell sites like Reverb and eBay. Are players drifting back to pedals? It is an interesting topic for discussion Brian has new circuits in the works and don’t go the gym at 7pm. It’s all in this week’s episode of the Chasing Tone podcast. Just when the dust had seemed to settle on the drama surrounding Gibson they have to go and delete all their videos from their YouTube channel. And then there are rumors that Mark Agnesi is gone? It is an authentic conversation. A meme is circulating comparing modern day musicians with the rock stars of 1987. The guys talk about the image and if there is any merit to it’s theme. Song writing. Some are able to collaborate with bandmates to create their songs, while others are more comfortable writing with a click track and their DAW. Brian and Blake talk about the advantages to both. 2098
Blakes back from Fear the Riff in NYC and Brian is land locked by a local community festival. Seems like a good time to do a podcast.

Brian recently went to a Garth Brooks show. That takes Blake down memory lane to his third grade talent show and makes Brian relive his first country audition. Blake talks about his mini pedal board. Blake joins Brian in this week’s podcast. Common question with no common answer. “Suggested settings” to get “that” tone. Is there a baseline? Is there a true “this is that sound setting” that works for every player? The guys talk about it.
Their is a gear show coming up in NYC. Who is going and what is it about? The workday is done, your significant other is off doing what they do and you find yourself alone with your guitar and your amp. How do you spend that “Golden Time”? Brian and Blake share their ideas.. And Brian is starting a new gear company. Much more straightforward approach with an interesting choice to run the brand. You will get to meet Oakland Hillsberry. Our Wampler teammate, brother in arms, grumpy friend from across the pond, Jason Wilding joins Brian for this weeks tone adventure.
So we here at Wampler put a lot of thought and strategy into releasing a new pedal. From social media to demos and the like, it should be a fine oiled machine. But when someone outside our control decides to release a pedal early? Brian and Jason share their frustration and how they are handling it. Jason took the new Paisley Drive Deluxe to a gig. He shares what he experienced, and his bandmates’ reactions. Brian explains how his battles with airlines to get his guitar stowed safely hardly ever goes well. 177 - Tone Tips - Suggested Pedal Settings: IGNORE them! A test with 6 amps & 3 pedals
1163
One of the most common questions we get through our website is this:
"How should I set my _____ pedal to get the sound from this song ______ ?”
Unfortunately, that's something that we can't really answer. It depends on a myriad of different things including but not limited to what amp you're playing, how you have it set, what guitar you're playing, how loud you're playing, and that's not even taking into account the playing style... as there is indeed alot to be said for "tone is in the fingers". In this special Tone Tips edition of Chasing Tone, Brian takes three pedals, the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, the Nobels ODR-1 Overdrive, and the Proco Rat Distortion, sets them all the exact same, and plays through 6 totally different amps. However, with that said, we do of course offer a "starting point" for different sounds in our own manuals but it's just a point of reference. Sound is more complicated than knob settings. ;) Of course, even though it's a clickbaity title, there are indeed exceptions. Delays and reverbs for example are a little easier to predict how to set to get certain tones and sounds, but dirt pedals? That's a different animal. Also, Brian was incorrect about the Nobels, looks like they are about $100 now. You can find them on amazon though: http://amzn.to/2jpzO4S Find us at: http://www.WamplerPedals.com http://www.Facebook.com/WamplerPedals http://www.Twitter.com/WamplerPedals http://www.Instagram.com/WamplerPedals http://www.Facebook.com/ChasingTonePodcast http://www.Instagram.com/ChasingTonePodcast Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast) |

2215
Tuners are very necessary. Some use a pedal and some use a headstock tuner. But would you leave that on your guitar throughout a gig? Is it wrong to do so? Brian and Blake have strong opinions on the subject.
Brian got away from it all for a few days of outdoor fun with his son. This meant he was “off the grid” for several days. Needless to say, his inbox was a bit full. Was it worth it? Brian will answer that. (And your emails…eventually) Pedal rental services. Brian points out a very useful purpose for them and how you can benefit. And retargeting ads and the smart musician. How to effectively use this marketing technique to get your music to more people. Does George Lynch “Dad Rock”??? Are running pants the new sweat pants? Did Blake check out? 163 - Tone Tips - Busting the myth of magical op-amps and diodes...?

Joking aside, I dive through several popular op-amp IC chips and let you hear what each one sounds like in the context of Guitar Overdrive Pedal Circuitry. Well, not every one out there, but some popular ones... from $.20 IC chips to $10 versions of the popular Operational Amplifier Integrated Circuit chip. And just for kicks and giggles, I'll show you the difference between several types of diodes, and the difference when running it as a soft clipping overdrive to a hard clipping distortion. 149 - Reviewing the Mimiq Doubler Pedal from TC Electronics
451
Normally, Brian doesn't do reviews of other company's guitar pedals. Even more odd is for him to review another company's pedal. However, recently he broke that streak and had some fun with the Mimiq Doubler effect pedal from TC Electronics.
It's a very cool effect if you are running stereo. If you're in a praise and worship band and going direct in, you'd be crazy NOT to have this in your arsenal. It's also highly effective if you run two different amps as well. It's true potential shines when you run it in stereo, so if you use it in mono with just one amp the effect won't be the same. You see something shiny on the interwebs and have to have it. Sound familiar? Brian and Blake talk about it.

It is easy to look at a schematic and say "That's a tubescreamer" based on its components, but that may not always be accurate. The guys explain why. 125 - "Tone Tips" 30 Something pedal vs. Vox AC30/AC15
631
We're doing a new special segment, called "Tone Tips". These segments are a bit shorter in nature, and feature tips about getting better done, and demonstrating them.
For years I had always wanted the ability to be able to show up to a gig with my Blackface amp (which I preferred with overdrive pedals), but I wanted a Vox-y chimey type of clean tone when necessary. I worked on different variations of circuits over the years, trying to achieve this. Finally, I hit upon it. That circuit became the Ace 30, which then became the 30 Something. Why the name change? Long story. Anyway, the 30 Something pedal really excels at being what Lotus Pedals coined "an Underdrive". Yes, it can get a bit gainy, but using it as a clean platform is where it shines. It also works very well when you stack other overdrives into it, getting a sound very similar to what it would be like if you ran that pedal into those British style chimey amps. So in this special episode of The Chasing Tone Podcast we bring you a demonstration of a Vox AC-30, AC-15, and a deluxe reverb with and without the 30 Something.
